Challenge was to drabble Miss Bubb retaining control of the CS. I've set this during Rosalie.

Joanna Reay bounced on her seat. “You said the Juniors weren’t allowed to play hockey. What do we play, then?”
“Netball, mostly,” replied Tom. “Well, cricket and tennis this term,” she allowed.
“If the Bubb can bear to let us outside” muttered Gay, from the other side of the compartment.
“Gay!” hissed her steadier friend, Jacynth. “You can’t possibly talk about the Head like that – not in front of the kids, at any rate.” Gay had the grace to blush at this, but continued in an undertone,
“How on earth we’re supposed to play matches when we only get Games three times a week, and the exam people not even that, is beyond me.”
“Well, for heaven’s sake hold your tongue while we’re around any of the Middles,” answered Jacynth severely. “That Joanna kid has any amount of cheek: who knows what she might do if she heard you going on about Miss Bubb?”
“All right, Granny,” laughed Gay, “I’ll be good – but it is a sickener, to finish school under the Bubb.”
Joanna’s sharp ears swivelled towards the older girls. “Who’s the Bubb?” she asked, inquisitively. “Why is it a sickener?” Avoiding Jacynth’s reproachful eyes, Gay replied brusquely,
“Miss Bubb is our esteemed headmistress, and you’d do well to keep on the right side of her.”
“But why is it a sickener?” repeated the irrepressible Joanna.
“Never you mind,” was all the reply Gay vouchsafed her, and turned firmly back to her companion with a technical question about music. Joanna was not so easily quelled, and stared expectantly at Tom, obviously hoping she would be more forthcoming. That young lady had no intention of gossiping about Gay’s personal business, but seeing that Rosalie was also looking interested, she unbent enough to grunt:
“She’s new.”
“New?” asked Joanna, not noticeably subdued by Gay’s snubbing.
“Miss Bubb. There used to be some Head called Miss Annersley who everybody raves about,” explained Tom. “Then last year, she had a horrible smash-up in a bus accident, and we got Miss Bubb. She’s awfully keen on exams, and all that.” Rosalie’s eyes widened in dismay.
“Is she very strict?” she ventured.
“I s’pose,” returned Tom. “She’s not bad if you’re good at lessons. Makes you swot, though.” She had good reason to know this, as due to her father’s education Tom had a strong grounding in Classics, a fact which rejoiced the classicist’s heart. Miss Bubb taught the girl herself, along with those among the elder students who showed a special facility in the field, and always insisted on a high standard.
“What about the other teachers?” This, of course, was Joanna.
“We call ‘em mistresses, here,” growled Tom, tiring of her junior’s constant questioning.
“Well, what about them?” insisted Joanna, and Rosalie’s eager interest pushed Tom to continue.
“All right, mostly. Miss Slater’s the Deputy Head, and she only teaches Senior Maths, so you won’t have her.” Here, Jacynth intervened, wanting to head off any frank discussion of the mistresses before it began, particularly in light of their fellow travelling companions.
“That’ll do, you two. You’ll find out about the mistresses soon enough, Joanna – you’ve no call to be gossiping about them on a train. In any case, we’ll be arriving soon enough, so you can just give you tongue a rest until the train gets in.” Joanna made a face, but a certain something in the prefect’s voice subdued her enough to quieten down for the last quarter of an hour.

With thanks to Jennifer's brilliant site!

After being bustled down endless corridors, separated from her night-case, introduced to half a dozen other Middles, and made to splash her face and comb her ringlets, Rosalie found herself standing next to Tom in the Hall, staring at Miss Bubb for the first time. She was too flustered to notice anything but a broad woman with rather tightly drawn back grey hair and sharply cut features – an image that secretly affirmed all her worst fears about strict Heads.

“Welcome back, girls,” began Miss Bubb in her hard, metallic voice, “and welcome to all our new girls. I hope you have all come prepared to work hard this term – particularly those preparing for exams. To you elder girls, I have only this to say: you are a generation that have more opportunities than ever before. The universities are opening their doors to women in greater numbers than ever, and it is my sincere hope that many of you will take advantage of that fact. You are intelligent young women, and with self-discipline, focus, and plenty of hard work you can and will achieve great things. The Chalet School has a long tradition of academic trailblazers: Mrs. O’Hara, our second head girl, was the first pupil to attend university, studying Mathematics at the London School of Economics in ‘32; Mrs. de Bersac, who many of you know, studied Mathematics at the Sorbonne in Paris in ‘35; Miss Benson is even now writing a dissertation in Classics at Oxford. There are many others. I hope you will add to that list, and become women who future generations of Chalet School pupils can be proud of and inspired by.
To the younger girls, I say, you can never begin too soon to cultivate a love of scholarship, a strong work ethic, and a good grounding in all subjects. They will stand you in good stead when you become Seniors yourselves, and are preparing, as our elder girls are, for exams and university entrance. Slacking off now will mean making up later. Take pride in your work, strive for excellence in everything, and prepare to take your place in the world as educated women.”

At this point, Miss Bubb stepped back from the podium, and a tall, younger woman, who Rosalie later learned was Miss Slater, announced the hymn.

***

In the Prefects room, Beth Chester, Daisy Venables, and Gwensi Howells were chatting, waiting for the others to arrive.
“What did the Bubb have to say to you?” asked Gwensi curiously of her friend. Daisy blushed.
“Oh – just to give me a book,” she replied, holding it out.
“Pioneer work in opening the medical profession to women” read Beth. “Elizabeth Blackwell – who’s she?”
“She was the first woman to be placed on the Medical Register” said Daisy, enthusiastically. “She’s American: I don’t know how Miss Bubb knew about her, but anyway, she got me this book.” At this point the door swung open, and Gay, Jacynth, and three other girls walked in. Daisy hastily stuffed the book away – Gay and Dorcas at least had no great love for Miss Bubb, and she had no wish to provoke a discussion. When Gay opened her mouth, she was glad of her prompt action.
“I hate her!” she exclaimed passionately. “How dare she stop me!” Jacynth laid a hand on her friend’s arm, trying to calm her.
“What’s going on? What’s wrong, Gay?” asked Beth, the Head Girl, but Gay merely threw herself into her chair.
“Miss Bubb has said that Gay is not to play sports until her grades improve,” said Jacynth quietly.
“It’s my last term! I’m not going to university – why should I stew inside doing Classics? It’s all very well for those of you who are ‘academic trailblazers’, but to stop me from even playing cricket!” Gay’s indignation was very real. “She’s always had it in for me!”
The prefects were not sure what to say. It was certainly true that Miss Bubb was not fond of Gay Lambert. In her first term as headmistress, she and Gay had come head-to-head on several occasions; leading to Gay’s running away from school when Miss Bubb had forbidden her from going home to see her brother who was leaving for the war. In addition, Gay was decidedly not academically inclined, and her work was generally poor, which fact did not endear her to the Head. That lady brought out the worst in Gay: not encouraging her love for music, and dismissive of her keenness on games, she had very little time for the generally lively and helpful girl. This semester, too, Gay could reasonably have expected to become Games Prefect, a position Miss Bubb had not seen fit to grant her, leaving Gay sorer than ever.

Oh dear - I can already see how Miss Bubb could be a really inspiring head for those who are academically inclined. But for those who aren't, or whom she doesn't like... well, I can't see them getting on too well with the new regime. I should think the later books would be very, very different in this universe.

Fascinating - thanks, KatS.

Thanks Joey - thought I had caught all Americanisms

In the Upper Third form room, Rosalie Way was also feeling sceptical about her new timetable. Needlework, an area in which she shone, had been highly prized at the little vicarage school but seemed to be entirely absent from the curriculum here. She could well imagine Tom’s reaction to needlework, so she turned to Amy West, one of her dormitory-mates, and asked timidly “Don’t we do any sewing?”
“No,” replied her rosy-faced companion, “At least, not any more.” Bride Bettany, the Form Prefect, deigned to explain.
“When Miss Annersley was Head, we used to do sewing and dommy sci, and all that. It was awfully good fun – well, the dommy sci, anyway – we had Frau Mieders, and she let us talk, and we cooked for the whole school. We don’t now, though.”
“Why not?” asked Rosalie.
“Oh, we’re s’posed to go to university,” answered Bride vaguely. She was saved from having to explain further by the entrance of Miss Linton, the junior English mistress, and a favourite of the girls, but she pondered the question of Miss Bubb in her mind.
She could not help but know that certain members of her family were none too keen on the new Head, but after that dreadful bus accident, in which Auntie Hilda had died, and Auntie Nell, Miss Edwards, and Mlle had been so badly injured; Auntie Madge hadn’t wanted to have anything to do with the Chalet School for a while. On top of that had come Josette’s accident, and nobody had wanted to trouble her when the fiasco over Gay had erupted. Bride had once asked Auntie Joey whether Miss Wilson wasn’t coming back, but her aunt had just shaken her head sadly.
“Bride Bettany! What have I just been saying?” interrupted Miss Linton. Bride flushed: being caught dreaming was unusual for her.

***

Beth Chester, her Latin prep in hand, knocked calmly on the door of the Head’s study, and was invited to enter. Suppressing the curtsey her knees instinctively ducked into, she was faced with Tom Gay and a new girl she hadn’t yet met standing red-faced in front of the desk.
“Wait a moment, please, Beth” said Miss Bubb in clipped tones. “Well, Lucinda,” she continued, at which Tom scowled blackly, “if talking about ‘cricket and tennis’ is going to make you ten minutes late for your preparation, you had better spend your games periods for the rest of this week doing extra Greek translation.”
“But the Form Eleven is being chosen this week!” burst out Tom, outraged that her efforts to help a drippy new girl could jeopardize her chances at the team.
“That will do,” said Miss Bubb, sharply. “I see I was right in thinking that you need to learn to place your schoolwork ahead of your games. Rosalie, I hope you realise what a decidedly inauspicious beginning to your school career this is. You may take the same punishment as Lucinda.”
“Please,” Rosalie stammered, frightened by the Head’s tone, “I… I don’t know Greek.”
“If you spend less time chattering about cricket, and more with your schoolbooks, you soon will,” retorted Miss Bubb. “For this week, you can simply do the preparation you do receive thoroughly. You can leave now, both of you, and don’t let me hear of this happening again.” The two Middles beat a hasty retreat, Tom agonizing over her chances of making the Eleven when she had to miss the first two practices, and thus feeling bitterly resentful towards the new girl. Rosalie sensed this, and it only added to her distress at being in trouble so soon.
In the study, Miss Bubb had turned to the elder girl. “Well, Beth? Are you having trouble with your Livy?” Having explained the difficulties clearly and concisely, she turned to her Head Girl with an approving smile. Beth Chester, a bright, hard-working girl set to go to Oxford in the fall, was a favourite of hers.
“How are the prefects meetings going, Beth?” Unlike her predecessor, Miss Bubb liked to know exactly what the prefects were up to. Beth considered what to say: they had much less responsibility than previous generations, only rarely supervising the younger girls and not dealing with any disciplinary matters.
“They’re all right.” Realizing the inadequacy of this answer, she flushed and continued: “We don’t do that much.”
“Naturally not. You have your own work to do, and you are still schoolgirls yourselves.”
“Yes. I suppose so. We just – the prefects used to do more.” Miss Bubb looked annoyed, and Beth hastened to change the subject. “I talked to Miss Durrant about developing an extended reading list this morning.” The conversation turned to Beth’s preparations for Oxford.

My flabber is a bit ghasted (aaagh Hilda/Nell), but what an interesting alternative universe. I can quite see that Miss Bubb would be brilliant for the very academic students, and loved her encouragement to the girls to take full advantage of the widening opportunities, but she's certainly restricting the possibilities for the les academic.

It's interesting how Miss Bubb divides opinion in the school! Giving that book to Daisy was a lovely thought, and I like that she's obviously helping Beth to prepare for Oxford but I have to admit, had I been a new girl I'd have been terrified by that initial speech! I feel for Gay as well, although I suspect that would be a pretty common response from a headteacher (i.e. if your grades aren't good enough, you won't be allowed extra sport). Harsh but realistic and makes perfect sense in terms of her aims for the girls. Lovely to see Juliet, Simone and Stacie praised as well!

Released from the joys of drumming a few facts about the life of Robert Louis Stevenson to the Upper Third, Gillian Linton flopped into an armchair in the corner of the cozy staffroom, and was presented with a cup of coffee by the music mistress, Miss Cochrane. “Oh, thanks,” she said, surprised, for Grizel had never been known for her thoughtfulness. Settling down for a few minutes of well-deserved rest, she stretched out her legs, and let her eyes close. Her peace was soon disturbed, however, as Mary Burnett marched in, eyes flashing, and practically threw herself into the seat next to Gillian. As the history mistress was known for her even temper, her companions rightly divined that something was up!
“What have the little pests done this time?” asked Grizel, lazily.
“Nothing to do with them – for once. No, I’ve been having a conversation with our beloved headmistress.” The mistresses looked at each other uneasily, but Mary continued: “Apparently the form standard is too low. It’s not my fault that there are a handful of complete dunces in the Fourth this year, and they’re none of them in the mark-hunting stage.”
“No one blames you for a handful of silly girls, Mary,” put in Gillian, peaceably.
“She does! She seems to think they’d all be young geniuses if we just shoved their noses hard enough against the grindstone. Slave driving has never been the Chalet School philosophy.”
“I hardly think the Middles are working like slaves,” put in Grizel, with an unpleasant smile. “They’re lazy little beasts, half of them.”
“I got a perfectly good education without eliminating everything that can’t be thoroughly examined, and so did you, Grizel Cochrane!”
“For heaven’s sake, don’t start brawling like Juniors” interjected Pam Slater. “We all know that changes have been made since your days, Mary.”
“Since my days! Since the second that woman got her foot through the door, you mean.”
“Yes, all right,” responded Miss Slater, not quite succeeding in hiding her annoyance. “Since Miss Bubb arrived, we’ve actually shown an interest in the girls’ academic performance. This is a school, you know.”
“This is the Chalet School. Exam results have never been the be-all and end-all of everything.”
“I think it’s a question of balance,” broke in Gillian, conscious of Miss Slater’s position, but herself sympathizing with Mary. “Miss Bubb has certainly done wonders for the girls’ exam results – and she goes out of her way to encourage the brighter ones, no doubt about it. But as Mary said, there has always been something special about this particular school, and we’ve always placed a high importance, not only on the girls’ health and strength of character, but also on preparing them for whatever it is they are going to do in life, be that going to university and onto a high-flying career, or simply being a wise, honest, loving wife and mother.”
“Oh, and a few glasses of milk and games of cricket will do that, will it?” said Miss Slater sharply. “I can tell you, I have no objection to actually encouraging the girls to study hard in what is supposed to be an educational establishment, no matter what they end up doing. But you Old Girls have the Chalet School stuck up on a pedestal in your minds, and can’t bear to think that it might be just another school.”

Lovely to see all the opposing views of the staff. Can now see why Miss Slater was made Deputy Head and how hard it would be for the old staff working under someone who had taught at the school before they were the Head. But am really enjoying how a lot of the girls are encouraged here. It seems that many have gotten over their initial dislike of Miss Bubb in the face of such encouragement.

It does seem a shame the less academically inclined can't excel in what they're good at like music

Our headmistress was a bit like that: it suited me because I was hopeless at PE and art and I've got the worst singing voice in the world  , but it was a shame for people who were better at those subjects than academic subjects and it was a shame for teachers who taught those subjects because kids came to regard art lessons etc as a time to doss about and not work properly.

The comment about putting the school on a pedestal's fair enough, but not really what a headmistess should be saying!

This is so interesting, Kat - it's certainly not a harmonious staff-room, is it? Perhaps someone could plant the suggestion that some girls work better if encouraged rather than forced... But I think they might be doomed to failure. Not surprising that Miss Slater is deputy - she doesn't have the same "Old Girl" views, and would be keen to back Miss Bubb's reforms.

Interesting too that the prefects don't have much to do - reminds me of Miss Cromwell's attitude in Antonia Forest's Cricket Term.

I can see Pam Slater's point of view, but the fact is that the CS has always had a different ethos. It seems a shame that Miss Bubb seems to be trying to make the school into just another results-orientated-production-line. Actually, I'm sure there must a happy medium, but I'm not convinced Miss B can strike it. Anyway, the CS always encouraged academically minded girls - quite a few went on to universities.

Oh, ouch! Distinct lack of sweetness and light here - Miss B's somewhat divisive approach seems to be beginning to be reflected only too accurately in the staff room. The strange thing is that Art and Music (and PE, these days, though not so much then, I suppose) are academic subjects, too, though they obviously have a much wider appication that that.
It reminds me of my Junior School days when the Head of my school, a wise and scholarly woman who reminds me so much of Miss Annersely, insisted on providing us with a broad education while the school at the other end of the town concentrated all their efforts on English and Maths to get the kids through the 11 Plus. I've always been very grateful to our Head - but the sad fact is that I was one of the very few pupils to get to the Grammar School, whereas the other school got them in in droves.
Thank you, this is fascinating.
