She lay on the bed staring unseeingly into the ceiling. This shouldn't be happening to her. It might not have been wanted but still this was most certainly not

The midwife and doctor where there, now they were telling her she had to be ready to push

She wanted to be left alone, or even better to not be here, not be her and not be in this situation.

'There was no way that this poor child could survive' thought Madge.

It would have been a fourth sibling for the rest of the children.

They were now telling her to push

Madge was crying now, her body was telling her to push yet her head and heart telling her it was too soon.

Her body gave into it's urges, she pushed.

One more push and it will all be over, that's what they were saying now

A small whimper, more like a mewing was heard.

A boy they told her

Now Jem was back in the room with her, to spend precious moments alone with their boy.

"He'll be called Richard, Jem, that's what we agreed for a boy, is that alright?"

"Darling, of course that is what we agreed, but now we will spend some time with him"

They'd left them alone now

Madge holding her son, and Jem holding her, looking at their tiny, but perfect son.

Ten fingers...ten toes...her button nose, his mobile mouth, and brilliant blue eyes...that they could never forget.

They sat and watched, both through tears, as their son's breaths grew gradually shallower.

Soon the sound of poignant weeping traveled through the house, Marie would never forget the sound of her mistress' crying at that point.

The next day they buried him, swathed in a white shawl, placed in a tiny white coffin.

There was always a part of the Russell's hearts left in the corner of the church graveyard in Armiford. The headstone reading:

Richard John Russell
November 17th 1940
An unexpected but much loved angel,
Taken back to join the many tiny angels
that play in heaven's garden at His feet.

And so awful that they - like so many others - would have been expected to just forget all about it and be told they "could always have another". As though every single child isn't precious in their own right - and totally irreplaceable!
