#1: Cecil's friend - updated 5th July Author: Laura VLocation: Merseyside PostPosted: Thu Jun 29, 2006 6:11 pm

Please note that this is my first proper attempt at a drabble, and I'm not very good at creative writing or re-creating EBD's style! Embarassed
Here we go!

Cecil Maynard was sat on the gate that separated Freudesheim from the Chalet School. It was the end of the summer holidays and school would return the next week. She watched intensely at the construction work that had been going on not far from were she was seated. The new chalet was complete and the last of the men were collecting up their tools whilst standing back from the building, surveying their work with satisfaction.
"Perhaps I'll get to be in the new building!" Cecil thought excitedly to herself, "I wonder what it's like inside."
Glancing back over her shoulder to make sure her younger sister Phil wasn't about Cecil slid down from the gate and ran lightly over the grass to the chalet. Once she was next to the building she was able to creep around to the front entrance without being noticed...or so she thought.
"Fraulein! No, you can't go in there!"
Cecil nearly jumped out of her skin. She spun round only to find her face almost against the chest of a tall man.
"Sorry! I'm awfully sorry! I'll get out of your way!" she mumbled hurriedly, her face looking down at the ground.
"Fraulein, please do not apologise. It is I that has made the problem by scaring you so much," was the friendly reply.
Cecil looked up at the stranger's face. He was only young, no more than twenty with brown curly hair and blue eyes that sparkled. The young man stared at her for a few seconds before he spoke again with a smile on his face.
"Please, fraulein, my name is Jens and I am very sorry for scaring you in such a way."
Cecil blushed. She knew what he was thinking. At sixteen she had grown into what her father, Dr Maynard, called "the pick of the bunch for looks" and was well aware of the unwanted attention she got because of them. She paused for a second before replying politely,
"No, no it was me. I shouldn't have been creeping about like that. I've no right...."
"Please, fraulein, no. Would you like to see the chalet? I helped to build it you know. Perhaps I could give you a tour."
This was not what she was expecting but Cecil was a polite and well mannered girl and felt it would be rude not to accept the invitation, besides, Jens seemed a very nice young man.
"Okay, then," she replied gracefully, "After you."
"Why, no. It should always be young ladies first," Jens replied.
"but you are a guest here! I should be the one to show you around!" Cecil replied with a chuckle.
Jens began to chuckle to.
"you are so very polite, fraulein... fraulein, what is your name?"
"Cecil."
Jens paused before repsonding.
"That is a very pretty name for such a lovely young lady," he replied.
Once again Cecil felt herself blushing.
But the conversation was to be interrupted abruptly just then.
"Why hello, Cecil. How are you today?"
Cecil turned round to find herself face to face with her headmistress, Miss Annersley.

to be continued..

thanks for all your positive feedback, it's really appreciated!

"Auntie Hilda! How nice it is to see you," stuttered Cecil, with more than an ounce of a lie in her words. "I was just wondering if I could have a look in the new chalet. "
Miss Annersley smiled warmly down at her. "Of course. Let me show you around. We've moved you over here for this year, you're to be one of our dormitory prefects."
Cecil flushed. To be a dormitory prefect was good news, Mamma and Papa would be so proud! But Miss Annersley was not her ideal companion right at this moment.
"Oh, thank you so much, Aunt Hilda," was the reply coupled with a forced. She caught a glimpse of Jens out the corner of her eye. She would probably never see him again, there weren't many people on the Platz apart from the school and the San and he wasn't likely to be around there. She slowly turned round to face Jens. "It was very nice to meet you, Jens. I hope you enjoyed your work here."
"Why yes, Fraulein. I have very much enjoyed working here but now I must depart. Good day, Fraulein Annersley, good day Fraulein Cecil," Jens replied, the smile never having left his face. He walked away with long strides towards some workers at the far end of the chalet.
"Cecil, you'll be in the biggest dormitory in the chalet, Lavender." But Miss Annersley's voice was now a distant murmur in the background. Cecil followed her inside, all previous enthusiasm having evapourated.
"We've engaged three new mistresses and several more domestic and grounds staff to help with the running of the new chalet. You've met one of them just now, Cecil. Jens will be an assistant to Gaudenz. One of our new mistresses is an Old Girl, though I don't think...." went on Miss Annersley as she walked down the long corridor stretching the length of the building. But Cecil had stopped in her tracks. Jens was going to work at the school! A small smile spread across her face as she wandered into the room on her right. Through the window she could see the men collecting the last pieces of rubbish. Among them was Jens, who gave her a wave when her saw her. Cecil waved back...

Daphne Bettany eyed her cousin as she sat down for Mittagessen. There was something different about Cecil, she wasn't being her usual talkative self and she frequently kept looking towards the window on the far side of the Speissesaal.
"I say, Cecil, what's up with you? You've hardly spoken to me since we got back last week. Is there anything wrong?"
Cecil jumped at the sound of her name.
"Oh, sorry Daph. I've, well, just had a lot of things on my mind recently."
"There's nothing wrong at Freudesheim is there? Or is it one of the trips or Steve or Charles?"
"No, no. It's, well, sort of personal," was the distant reply.
"Well, you know where I am if you need me and need to talk," Daphne smiled kindly across the table. She wasn't satifisfied with her cousin's response but it would have to do for now.
It was a German day and they had been speaking the language to each other. Unfortunately for them they had been overheard by one of the mistresses.
"Cecil Maynard! I don't know who you've been speaking to over the holidays but your pronunciation is appauling! We learn standard German here, not the local patois. Please make sure that you don't talk like that in my lesson," exclaimed Miss Wilmot as she turned round in her seat to face the girls table.
Cecil blushed and returned to her meal....

Cecil sat down in the seat on the opposite side of the small table to Jens. It was late October and the Oberland autumn had forced them to take shelter in the small garden store shed on the edge of the school grounds.
Jens took out a small bag of tobacco and proceeded to roll a cigarette on the table. There was silence for a while before Cecil finally managed to speak up.
"Jens, why do you talk to me more than the other girls?" was the quietly spoken question.
Jens looked up and smiled at Cecil. "Why it is because you understand me, Cecil. Many people would not regard me in the same way as you as I do not have education or money that some have. But you understand me and I find that a very nice trait." He picked up the newly complete cigarette and lit it, filly the air with the fragrance of tobacco.
Cecil looked down. It was true that her parents had always taught her to respect people and that they shouldn't be judged because of the lack of opportunities that they faced. But Jens was just a groundman, with no expectations of becoming a doctor or a writer, and he was by no means academic. Yet he was happy with his life as it was.
"Will I see you tomorrow, Cecil?" Jens queried, still smiling.
"Oh, I'm sorry, but tomorrow I'm going to Freudesheim for the weekend. But I'll be back on Monday," Cecil replied lamentably.
"Then I hope I shall see you soon. You must return now for the others will wonder where you are."
Cecil glanced down at her watch. "Crumbs! I'll be late for prep! Thank you for inviting me, and hopefully I will see you next week."
She stood up and headed towards the door which Jens had already opened for her. She stopped in the doorway and turned to face him. "Goodbye, Jens."
"Goodbye, Cecil. Enjoy your weekend."
And with that Cecil made her way back to the school.

It was Friday evening and a group of four made their way across the school grounds to Freudesheim. They were led by Phil and Claire who were chattering and laughing away, just behind them was Daphne, and the quartet was completed by Cecil who was lagging behind somewhat. Daphne stopped im her tracks and waited for Cecil to catch up.
"I say, Cecil," she said quietly. "If you want to talk later I'm here for you."
Cecil lifted her head to face her cousin and gave a distant smile.
"Thanks, Daph. I'll....I'll come and find you."
Daphne slipped her arm through her cousins and they walked slowly towards Freudesheim.
Cecil remained a little quieter than normal that evening but it was hard to be like that when her mother was in entertaining mood, and she soon found herself fully engaged in a game of charades.
On getting ready for bed she remembered what Daphne had said and made her way to the room where her cousin was staying. She knocked lightly on the door and on hearing Daphne's call she went in.
They both sat down in the double wicker chair by the window.
"Do you want to talk now, Cecil? I know something's not right. You've been so distant lately, I've hardly seen you. what's wrong?"
Cecil turned to face her cousin with a worried look on her face.
"Oh, Daphne! I think....I think I have a boyfriend."
