“Oh Frank,” whispered Phoebe looking at the sleeping toddler in her husbands arms, “she beautiful.” Phoebe hardly dared to touch her; her heart felt so full.

“Please, I just want to hold her,” said Phoebe looking up at her husband from beside him.

Frank smile at his beloved wife, unable to deny her what she had wanted and longed for all these years and at times had hardly dare dream that her dearest wish may just somehow come true. It had such a long journey for both of them, the waiting and the hoping-hoping the orphanage would deem them suitable and then waiting to get the go ahead to be allowed to adopt their own child. Phoebe had hardly dared believe it would actually happen.

“She’s just perfect,” she said, the toddler nestled in Phoebe’s arms hardly stirring when her adopted Father had placed her in her Mothers arms.

“She’s so beautiful, aren’t you darling,” cooed Phoebe. “You have the loveliest curls and the sweetest chubbiest hands and just look at those fingers, aren’t they adorable,” and Phoebe hardly daring to breath gently touched her new daughters fingers.

Frank smiled at his wife, close to tears at seeing his beloved Phoebe finally holding their daughter in her arms. Neither could move from the sofa as they watched her sleep in her Phoebe’s arms.

Frank smiled at Lucy, as her hand clutched Frank finger. It had been such a long day. Both had left their hotel room early that morning for the orphanage, neither had felt like eating breakfast, they were so nervous.

“What do you think she will be like?” asked Phoebe hardly able to walk quietly.

“I’m sure she will be lovely just like both her Mothers,” said Frank smiling fondly at his wife.

“Will she know how much I love her?” asked Phoebe fearfully, “will she love me as much as I love her. Oh Frank I just want this so badly that I’m so scared, what if she doesn’t like us or- or me. Oh Frank.”

Phoebe could hardly move for nervousness or fear. Frank stopped walking and gently circled his wife into his arms. Frank could feel Phoebe shake in his arms, he knew how much she longed for a child of her own, had seen the look of longing she gave every baby she had ever held and the way she defended all children. Somehow Phoebe’s gentleness attracted all children and they seemed to flock to Phoebe, telling her their hopes and dreams and looking for comfort whenever they were at odds with their own parents.
The look on Phoebe’s face when Frank had suggested they adopt a child of their own was something Frank never forgot. Phoebe’s face had illuminated with such joy and longing that Frank knew although Phoebe never spoke of it, just how much she longed for a child a daughter of her own.

“Did you want a son?” she had asked him tremulously.

Frank had smiled at her with such love, “I think I would like a little girl someone who can wrap me around their finger-just like their Mother can,” he said.

“Oh Frank,” breathed Phoebe so close to tears.

And now here they were standing outside the orphanage hardly daring to go in. Frank took Phoebe’s shaking hand into his own and drew his wife close to him.

‘His face is so dear and comforting,’ thought Phoebe fondly.

They had walked into the orphanage and stood in a roomful of children and seeing all the children sitting and standing there, Phoebe was overwhelmed by her thoughts.

‘How on earth do I choose,’ she thought frantically looking around at the group of girls, until one little girl caught her eye.

She had brown tangled curls and glared as ferociously as a two year old could. Phoebe could see an ‘I won’t’ written so clearly in her stance and wanted to laugh. She wasn’t the prettiest child, ‘an old soul in a child’s body,’ thought Phoebe, but the stubborn determination in her eyes somehow attracted her and Phoebe slowly walked over to her and knelt down to the child’s level. The child stared back unblinking. Phoebe’s mouth twitched.

“How would you like me to be your new Mother?” she asked gently drawing the little girl onto her knee. The little girl stared at her, watchful, waiting.

“Frank, I would like to adopt this one,” she said eyes shinning. “What is her name?”

“Her name is Lucy, both her parent were killed in a train crash,” said the Matron pleased the difficult toddler was being adopted out.

“Lucy,” murmured Phoebe, and smiled through her tears of joy.

Oh, Fiona, that brought back all my own recollections of seeing our adopted daughter for the first time - when she was only 6 days old. It's a moment like no other.

Thank you.

Wonderful, Fiona. So they think she's a difficult child, when she's got a lot of spirit.
