Post subject:  The Peace of Forgiveness

Holding the envelope she paused and took a deep breath, once it was dropped in there was no going back. Was it a mistake? Would it make a difference? Probably not but she had to try. Don’t leave things unsaid. Better late than never. She let it go and heard the dull thud as it landed. She stood at the post box, red pillar and proud and it brought a smile to her face as postboxes always did. A childhood memories triggered, causing the corners of her mouth to twitch. A grainy image in her mind. What an awful colour, how they must have looked.

Two days the letter arrived at its destination and the recipient on hearing the letter box clatter collected her post. One letter. She swayed unsteadily. Her head spinning as she recgnised the writing. Surely not after all this time. Sitting on the stairs she brushed her chestnut hair now streaked with white away from her face. Muttering a quick prayer for courage her dark brows puckered as she paused momentarily and traced her name on the envelope. Setting her teeth she prised open the envelope retrieved the letter and began to read.

To Elizabeth,

I felt I had to write this. I don’t know if you will ever read this or if you will care. You may see who it is from and discard it without a second glance but you may be intrigued to read it and I hope with all my heart you do.

A lot of time has passed, water under the bridge they say but I still feel like I have to make recompense. There was no goodbye, just nothingness, not through choice but through circumstances. Beyond my control. Everything was. After one stupid stupid mistake. A moment of misguided youth. I just wanted you.

We were so close growing closer, like two trees with roots so close that they become one. You knew my thoughts, you understood me like no other. We were a duo going together like bread and butter and everyone knew that. She does the them but the other thinks of them they would say in relation to our pranks as Middles. And they had many examples to quote. What price the Duchess on the rooftop or the lipstick and weaves! I can’t look at a pillar box without smiling.

But then something happened and the branches of our tree started to grow apart. You seemed so mature, so together, focused and grown up and I wasn’t there yet. Jealous of something I couldn’t ever be. You were popular you had other friends other interests and it wasn’t fair You were mine you said were always going to be together and then things changed and I couldn’t understand why, couldn’t assimiliate them in my head. I’m sorry.

I’m sorry for not being good enough, not enough for you but more than that I’m sorry genuinely sorry that I let my twisted bitterness turn into something so destructive. All I wanted was your friendship. I have thought of you often. VE Day, our birthdays, Christmas’s but I have been too scared to contact you for fear of rejection in case you still saw me as that young women who nearly put so many lives in danger.

Forgive me. I am a different person now. Please let me have the peace of knowing you forgive me and you remember me fondly.

Always
Betty

Elizabeth put down the letter on the step her head spinning, she had too thought of Betty often. She had never hated her, she had felt sorry for her. Maybe if she’d known Betty just wanted to belong she might have found a way to prevent events turning out as they did but it was too late for that. She had long forgiven Betty. Maybe it was time to let Betty know that, or was it better to just leave the past in the shadowy recesses of her memory. She decided whilst banishing her memories which were screeching into the forefront of her mind. She couldn’t imagine the torment that had stayed with Betty so long. Betty asked for the peace of forgiveness she could at least give her that much.

Lovely, thank you. I like the way Betty is always reminded of one of their pranks when she sees a letter box.

It's lovely to see these characters post series. I really liked them as middles and thought Elizabeth made a good head girl.
I too would love to see Elizabeth's response.

Thank you Sugar.
