She yanked the brush through her bubbles crop scowling confusedly. Basil had told her she was being an idiot and that had hurt. She worshipped him and it was hardly her fault he understood it all and she didn’t. Maybe it was different for boys. He and Paul didn’t seem phased by it in the least and Michael was more interested in kicking his football against the fence in a way that drove Mother to distraction. It wasn’t right to ask Mother either, she wasn’t well enough to be worried. She would only tell Gay it wasn’t her concern really, which was true but it was so confusing. She would just act pleased at the ceremony today, that was the polite thing to do and Father would scold her if she was rude and she would do anything to avoid that. She was pleased really, but it didn’t make much sense to a 10 year old. Scallywag didn’t look too impressed either.

The young maid held out her dress and Gay stepping into it, caught her eye and Agnes smiled shyly. Gay knew it wasn’t her real name. She was native, Nan Tung’s sister and her Father couldn’t pronounce it. He used to call her girl, but Mother found it insulting. It was a pity Tommy didn’t like her, Gay thought forlornly. She was really rather pretty with big eyes like horizontal tear drops and dark and shiny hair like a black onyx catching the morning sunlight streaming through the window.

Why can’t Tommy like her? Gay was frustrated. She knew Paul liked the maid. He got this strange look on his face whenever he saw her, a silly smile and when Gay had asked him why he looked so peculiar, his cheeks has flushed rather alarmingly. It didn’t have to be one of the servants, she mused as Agnes fastened the hooks of her dress, her father would probably disapprove of that and there was a war on, the natives were all going to get sucked in as soldiers fighting against the Japanese, according to what she heard Basil telling Paul, even though the plantation was a long distance from the war itself. They hadn’t known she was sitting in the branches of the tree above them. No-one knew till her mother saw the tear in her dress.

As she pulled her lacy cap on her head securing it with Kirby grips, Gay wondered if the Chinese climate had changed something in Tommy’s head in the same way it had affected his skin tone or whether rescuing her and Mrs Pritchard from the rebels had made him love her. Tommy had grown up with Ruth, as a sister, as a pal and now he was marrying her and they would have a family together. That was confusing enough. Let alone the fact they were blood family already!

She would never understand the relationship between Tommy and Ruth she thought forlornly. Was it as confusing for everyone else?

I was always confused over those relationships in'Gay' and I don't find it any clearer now. But great drabble, Sugar.

Thanks Sugar, I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the Lamberts confusing!

I would say Gay and her family are more than confusing... but it's only re-reading it now that I find that, when I read it as a child I never noticed! Thanks Sugar
