#1: Gabby goes to school Author: KatarzynaLocation: Preston, Lancashire PostPosted: Fri Jan 14, 2005 7:37 pm

What can I say, the bunny (not rupert - he's working on other projects) bit the other night. This is the result, not sure were it's going yet!

The roar of the car’s engine as it turned onto the Platz could be heard from the open French windows looking out onto the rose garden. With a smile, Len jumped up from her seat and briefly checked her reflection in the mirror before hurrying to the front door. A smart silver sports car had just stopped outside the garden gate.

She dashed down the pathway and pulled open the heavy gate as the driver emerged from the vehicle.

“I can’t believe it!” She exclaimed, “You don’t appear to have changed a bit.”

“I must have, it’s been nearly 5 years since I last saw you,” was the pragmatic reply. “I certainly didn’t have this many grey hairs!”

“Is this is?” She asked pointing at the small suitcase that had been sitting on the front seat of the car.

“Yes, that’s it,” the suitcase’s owner replied with a smile. “I’m not staying long and the car isn’t really built for carrying luggage.”

“You and your cars! How many do you have at the moment?”

“Oh, just the three, but this is my favourite.” The car’s owner shrugged before continuing, “well I have to have some vices and it’s better than smoking or drinking!”

“True,” Len replied picking up the suitcase, “come on in, teas ready and you’re not my only visitor.”

Very interesting start - can't wait to see where this is going (though I do wonder if I might have an incling as to who the person with the car might be...) Ray *curious*

Len lead the way up the path to the front entrance of the house. The reception area, which the last time her visitor had been there was the hallway of the family home, gleamed with polished wood.

“I know you said in your e-mails that I wouldn’t recognise the place but I hadn’t actually believed you.”

“I think you are in for quite a few shocks then,” Len’s eyes twinkled as she spoke. “The conversion back into a guest house took everyone a few years to get used to, as did going from living in a huge house to living in what was the guest wing. This way,” she added opening the door marked ‘private’.

A younger woman, whose almost black hair was now shot through with silver, rose from her seat as they entered.

“You remember my sister?” Len asked

“Of course I remember Cecil, though, I don’t think I’ve seen her since Tessa’s christening, and that must be what, thirty years ago!”

“Thirty three,” Cecil replied. “Actually, I have seen you since, at the triplets 50th birthday, but we didn’t get a chance to talk.”

Len poured out tea whilst her visitors settled themselves into the comfortable chairs in front of the windows, overlooking the garden.

Is this a sort of continuation of Chalet Girls Grow Up? I think Len's daughter was called Tessa in that. It also featured the triplets being 50. Or am I barking up totally the wrong tree? It looks really good, anyway!

Is in the same universe as the Felicity drabble and the CS at court? Have no idea about who guest is!

#12:  Author: KatarzynaLocation: Preston, Lancashire PostPosted: Sat Jan 15, 2005 8:07 am

No it isn't a continuation of CGGU - never read it! Yes it is using the same universe as Court/Felicity! As for the visitor!

Len lead the way up the path to the front entrance of the house. The reception area, which the last time her visitor had been there was the hallway of the family home, gleamed with polished wood.

“Well,” Jack began, “as you know, what with one thing and another I never married or had children whereas my sister Anne, always the better Chalet girl, went in for nursing and having qualified found herself a doctor, got married, gave up work and started a family.”

“There’s more to being a Chalet girl than marrying doctor!” Cecil interrupted

“Anyway, it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.” Len said with a grin, “I should know! Go on Jack, Didn’t Anne have two boys?”

“She did, Tommy and Jack. Well, the boys are now both in their mid thirties with families of their own. Tommy has three girls, Gabby, whose fourteen, and the twins, Charlotte and Laura, they have just turned ten. Jack has a boy, Paul, and two girls, Marie’s also ten and Josie’s eight going on about 40!”

“Aren’t they at the school’s English branch?”

“They are. Josie started last year, the twins and Marie are in upper second.”

“What about Gabby?” Len asked with a frown. “Judging by her age she should be in one of the fourths shouldn’t she?”

“Gabby doesn’t go to the Chalet School.” Jack sighed, her eyes clouding.

“Why not?” Cecil asked simply.

“When she was four she was in an accident, she slipped on some ice and fell backwards landing on the edge of a concrete step. She was unconscious for about a week and when she came round, she couldn’t see anything. At first they thought that she would recover, that the swelling on the brain which had damaged the optic nerves would subside and her vision would come back, it never did.”

“She’s totally blind?” Len asked quietly

“Yes, she remembers though, from when she could see. In a way I think that makes things worse.” Jack sighed again.

“Go on.” Len urged quietly

“Until last year she went to a special school, the Rowans, it was designed for children with physical disabilities and they have a high staff to student ratio with most students having a teaching assistant for at least half of their classes. The trouble is that a school like that is expensive to maintain and so last year the Education Authority decided that the Rowans would close and that the children would be integrated into their local schools.”

“Typical,” Cecil snorted, her own history in state schools in England had given her a somewhat jaded view, “It doesn’t matter what is best for the children, at the end of the day it all comes down to the budget!”

“Doesn’t it always?” Len asked

“It shouldn’t have to.” Cecil’s reply was curt, “so what happened?”

“They thought about sending her to school with her sisters, but Gabby didn’t want to go, I think that she didn’t want to be known as the blind older sister.”

Wow this will be really interesting! I'm sure they will take her at the Swiss branch - after all, look at the title of the drabble! Razz I'm really looking forward to more of this!

I agree with Helen that the title of the drabble indicates that they will take her, but it will mean a lot of challenges for them. This could prove to be a very intersting idea. Like Jack's future.

#29:  Author: KatarzynaLocation: Preston, Lancashire PostPosted: Sat Jan 15, 2005 10:08 pm

Glad your all enjoying this, please bear in mind i have no idea where this is going!! - last post for tonight!!

“So she went to the local school?”

“Yes, it’s a big school, over 2000 pupils between the ages of eleven and eighteen. She was in a class of thirty and although there were a couple of teaching assistants, they were for everyone in the school that needed them. Gabby changed, in a matter of weeks she went from a lively outgoing clever girl who loved her school work and had a load of friends to being this quiet, withdrawn shell of a girl. Her confidence plummeted, she was barely eating and wouldn’t go out with her friends, then she started to refuse to go to school.

“Was she being bullied?” Cecil asked.

“That was my initial thought when Tommy told me what was happening, so I interfered,” Jack said with a grin. “I got myself invited to give a talk to some of the sixth formers at the school as part of their careers week. Whilst I was there I had a nosey round, talked to some of the staff. The school itself has an excellent reputation and a sound anti-bullying policy”

“But?”

“The school wasn’t set up to give disabled children the support they need. There are too many pupils and not enough staff, they staff are dedicated and believe in what they do but it just isn’t working.”

“So what happened?”

Just discovered this one, and wow! What a great premise! How weird! I've been seeing Jack as a little girl of seven for the last few days (and probably for the next few as well) and now here she is, old enough that Anne's got grandchildren!!!! Thanks for the story Katarzyna!

“Well, Tommy’s wife comes from quite big family and her mother and a couple of her sisters are quite involved with dogs.”

“Quite involved with dogs?” Len raised an eyebrow.

“They show them, breed them, have too many of them living in the house. They are great people, practical and down to earth, but if you get more than one of them together all they talk about is the dogs and believe me they can go on for ages!” Jack grinned at fond memories of family gatherings. “One of Gabby’s aunts does puppy walking for Guide Dogs and suggested that it might be worth applying for Gabby to have her own dog, to see if that would improve her confidence and bring her back out of herself.”

“Did it work?”

“Well, it’s a bit early to say for definite, the dog arrived about six months ago and Gabby has certainly started to regain some confidence, the trouble is, she won’t go back to school.”

“So this is where your appointment with the head tomorrow comes in?” Len queried with a grin.

“It is, I am here on Gabby’s behalf, to beg and plead that they let her come out to school here. She’s a bright girl and learns quickly, I’ve modified a laptop with a Braille keyboard so that she can take notes during lessons and write assignments.”

“Does Gabby know what your doing?” Len asked

“She does, I am here with her blessing. She’s always liked the stories Anne and I tell of our time out here and, secretly, I think she wishes she’d gone with her sisters to the English branch.”

“She still could.”

“No,” Jack shook her head. “She won’t and the younger girls have been promised that when they turn 14 they can come out to the Swiss branch. If Gabby came now when the others came out she would already be established here.”

“That makes sense. It’s never easy to have to live up to your sisters’ reputation, either older or younger.” Cecil smirked at her eldest sister as she spoke.

“So that’s it, in a nutshell. Oh, except for one thing.”

What happens about quarrentine regulations with the dog? Is that covred within Ec regulations and pet passports and so on, or would the dog (possibly with Gabby) have to stay in Switzerland/at Freudesheim during the holidays? THat wouldn't be the best thing for her development as part of the family, or her relationship with this dog - what's it's name, by the way?

If it's set around present day then the dog would have a Pet Passport and have been vaccinated - therefore there would be no problem with Rabies quarantine.

Yes, I'm guessing it's set in present times (laptops with Braille keyboards) and I thought I'd read something in the Woman's Weekly about Pet Passports (here is where I admit to having bought the WW for the last 15 years, mainly for the serials) and surely anyway Jack would've investigated quarantine requirements, and the doggy part of the family would've known anyway? Um. You know what I mean. Thanks again Kate!

#46:  Author: KatarzynaLocation: Preston, Lancashire PostPosted: Sun Jan 16, 2005 8:12 pm

Having just gone through the process of getting some of rent-a-mob their passports I can give anyone who wants the complete and very long winded version of pet passports - however for those that want a simple explanation!........

“Which is?”

“Gabby will only come to school if Polo can come too.”

“Polo?” Cecil and Len asked together.

“Her guide dog.”

“How can he? England has such strict quarantine laws. She wouldn’t be able to cope without him during school holidays.” Cecil queried

“She wouldn’t have to,” Jack advised. “About four years ago they introduced a pet passport system so that dogs could come in and out of England to some European countries. The dogs have to been vaccinated for Rabies and have to have some form of permanent identification”

“Permanent identification?”

“Yes, either a microchip implanted under the skin or a tattoo, which is normally in the ear. Polo had his vaccinations, and the blood test to confirm that he has the required immunity, so there is no reason why he can’t come out and coming back shouldn’t be a problem providing he is treated with flea drops and wormers before he gets to the port.”

“I am sure that won’t be the strangest task one of our escort mistresses has ever had to supervise.” Len said with a grin.

“So, what do you think?” Jack asked sitting back in her chair. “Cecil, you teach at the school, do you think the head will go for it?”

“Well,” Cecil said with a grin, “I don’t know, she might.”

“What do you think my best approach with her would be? I don’t know anything about her, not even her name, to be honest I was a bit shocked when Len told me that Miss Wilmot was retiring.”

“I think she’s settled into the job really well,” Len said calmly, “She’s an old girl after all so she knew the ropes, and she’d taught at the English branch.”

“You must know her well then Cecil, weren’t you at the English branch too?”

“Oh yes, I do know her well, very well in fact.” Cecil grinned broadly as she spoke.

“No!” Realisation suddenly dawned on Jack, “why didn’t you say something sooner?”

“I didn’t want to interrupt!”

“So, will you be able to take her?” Jack asked eagerly.

“Lets keep the appointment tomorrow and discuss it then, when I’ve had time to think it over.”

The station platform was crowded and noisy, everywhere Jack looked she could see the familiar colour of the uniform that she herself had worn over forty years ago, the style was different with many of the girls choosing to travel in trousers rather than the skirts and tunics she had worn. Eventually, over the heads of the girls she saw what she was looking for.

“Come on Gabby, this way,” she touched the arm of the girl standing silently next to her and started to walk.

As they walked along the platform the sea of girls parted and Gabby, despite the fact that she could not see, knew that she was being stared at. In her left hand was the comfortable grip which attached her to her guide, allowing her to walk confidently alongside her aunt without having to childishly hold her hand.

“Hello there,” the woman’s voice was warm and friendly, “I’m Miss Redmond, and you must be Gabrielle Heath.”

“Gabby,” the owner of the name replied quickly.

“Gabby it is then,” Miss Redmond said with a laugh. “Now, lets see, your fourteen aren’t you?”

“Yes, fifteen next March.”

“Very good, wait here one moment and I’ll find you a sheepdog.”

“A sheepdog?” Gabby asked Jack whilst they waited for the mistress to return.

“Yes, it’s what they call those old girls designated to look after new girls and show them the ropes.”

It was only seconds later that Gabby heard two sets of footsteps approach and then stop directly in front of her.

Thought some of you might like to reaquanit yourselves with some old friends!!

“Gabby, this is Melanie Edwards, commonly known as Mel. Mel, this is Gabby Heath. She’s the same age as you so would you, Pippa and Abi please take charge of her during the journey.”

“Yes Miss Redmond,” Mel’s voice was clear and crisp. “Do you want to say good bye to your folks and then come with me?”

“I, erm,” Gabby found herself suddenly tounge tied.

“Right then Gabby,” Jack said in her most down to earth tones, “You have all Polo’s paperwork, and your overnight bag?”

“Yes,” Gabby nodded in response.

“Good.” Jack lent down and hugged her niece, whispering into her ear. “I want you to enjoy yourself Gabby girl, work hard and play hard. If you need help you can always send an e-mail and I’ll do what I can.”

Jack stood back and gave Gabby a little push towards her escort.

“Come on,” Mel urged, “lets go meet the others.” She linked her left arm through Gabby’s right and set off. Polo, who had settled down on the platform whilst they waited suddenly sprang to his feet eager to carry out his job.

“Steady,” Gabby reminded him with a giggle.

“I say,” Mel stopped walking, “your dog thinks coming too?”

“He is.” Gabby’s voice had a hint of defiance in it.

“But we don’t have pets at school!”

“Oh, he’s not a pet,” Gabby explained, “he’s my eyes.”

I think that was a really nice matter-of-fact way for Gabby to broach the subject. Certainly she wasn't introduced as being blind which let her tell the girls in her own way. Looking forward to more.

That's truly a great way to introduce her "handicap" to her "little playmates" - hope the girls don't try to fuss over Polo too much - or give him his namesakes!

“Your….” Mel’s voice trailed off and Gabby could feel her staring into her face.

“Yes, I’m blind,” she said brusquely.

“I, um,” was all Mel could stutter.

“Don’t we have a train to catch,” Gabby said coldly, prompting Polo to lead her along the platform.

“Oh, yes, of course,” Mel said trying to gather herself together. She put her arm onto Gabby’s again, “I’m sorry, I didn’t realise.”

Gabby didn’t say anything but allowed herself to be led along the platform and onto the train.

“This way, the aisle’s not wide enough for two, are you okay to follow me?”

“Yes,” there was still coldness in Gabby’s voice. In silence they walked down the aisle, the chattering girls already seated turned silent as they passed. Eventually Mel stopped.

“Shift up you two,” she said brightly and Gabby heard the rustling as who ever it was Mel had been talking to moved along the seats. “Can you get in there okay?”

“Of course,” Gabby replied, proving her point by sitting down as she spoke. “I have been on a train before!”

“Polo will be all right there won’t he?” Mel asked ignoring Gabby’s last comment. Without waiting for a response she continued, “I suppose I’d better do some introductions.”

“Gabby, on your left is Abigail O’Hara, but she only answers to Abi, and diagonally across the table from you is Pippa Richardson. Pip, Abi, this is Gabby Heath. I’m sheepdogging her.”

“Poor Gabby,” the voice came from next to her so was obviously Abi’s, the tone held an unspoken giggle. “I wonder whose idea that was?”

“Hey,” Mel tried to sound indignant but failed completely.

“Ignore them,” the third voice came from across the table and belonged to the girl identified as Pippa.

“Anyway,” Mel interrupted, “I hadn’t finished my introductions.” She paused dramatically, “Pippa, Abi, I’d also like you to meet Polo. Polo, these are Pippa and Abi!”

“Mel!” Pippa’s voice held a warning tone in it.

“Sorry,” Mel said so contritely that Gabby giggled.

Poor Gabby, it must be hard for her. But she's going to have to learn not to be so defensive, because people will be surprised, it's a natural reaction and she may alienate people if she reacts like that. Unfair, but true... Thanks Kate!

I think Mel, particularly, is already past the fact that Gabby is blind (viz. her introduction of Polo). I think it was wise of the mistresses not to tell the girls and to leave them to find out in their own way/time, so they don't have any preconceived ideas of how to treat Gabby and end up on the patronising side.

“Your dog’s coming to school?” Pippa asked, raising her eyebrows as she spoke.

“Yes,” was the blunt reply.

The four girls fell silent unsure of how to continue. Eventually, in an effort to break the silence Abi asked politely,

“do you know what form you’re in?”

“Not yet, I did the entrance exams but I won’t find out till I get to school.” Gabby replied. “What forms are you all in?”

“Upper IVa, it’s the highest form in the middle school, our last year of freedom and irresponsibility!” Mel sighed.

“Really?” the voice came from behind Gabby’s shoulder, “I seem to remember that the freedom stays about the same, and I should think by your age Mel you had gained a little responsibility, it doesn’t get given to you over the summer when your going into Inter!”

“I….” faltered Mel, totally embarrassed.

“Hello, you must be Gabby,” the newcomer said. “I’m Joanna Maynard, one of the prefects.”

“Pleased to meet you,” Gabby said politely.

“Are you Head Girl?” Pippa asked.

“You’ll have to wait and find out with the rest of the school,” Joanna replied with a grin. “Well if you four are all right here I shall go and check on the rest of the carriage.”

“Were fine,” Abi replied and Gabby heard the prefect move away.

“I’m sure she’s got Head Girl,” Mel whispered once she felt the coast was clear. “She’s been at school since she was tiny, and she’s got the pedigree for it!”

“What do you mean by that?” Gabby’s curiosity was sparked by this comment.

“She’s a Maynard!” Mel said as though that explained everything.

I could probably do a huge long pedigree for the Maynard clan - just like the ones i have on the walls for rent a mob!! Don't think i could get KC approval for it though!

“That doesn’t make her automatically head girl,” Pippa snapped. “Touchy!” Mel replied, “just cos your family!” “Stop it you two!” Abi warned. “What are they talking about?” Gabby asked “It’s school history. Pippa and Joanna are cousin’s, sort of anyway, Pip’s granny and Jo’s dad are brother and sister. Their mother, Mrs Maynard, was the first pupil at the school and their aunt, Lady Russell, founded the school. So far there have been loads of head girls who have been part of the family.” Abi explained. “It’s a bit of a joke really,” Pippa interrupted. “At the moment there are about eight of us at the Swiss branch and more at the English branch.” “There aren’t many of us that don’t have some relation or other that went to the school,” Mel said with a sigh. “My grandma did, and my aunts,” Abi advised. “In fact my grandma was one of the first head girls.” “Well, my grandmother was a prefect, and my great aunt was head girl!” Gabby exclaimed. “Who?” All three of them asked simultaneously.“That doesn’t make her automatically head girl,” Pippa snapped.

“My grandmother was Anne Lambert, and my great aunt is,”

“Jack!” Pippa exclaimed.

“Yes,” Gabby replied shocked by the tone of excitement in Pippa’s voice. “How did you know?”

“My own grandma, she was at school with Anne and Jack, she’s a couple of years older than Anne. Her sister used to be Jack’s dormitory prefect when she first came to school. Your aunt’s a legend!”

“A legend?”

“Yes, she glued someone to her chair, got stuck up a tree and she tampered with the mistresses bathroom by putting bubble bath in the tub so when the mistress turned the tap on it frothed!” Pippa laughed as she talked.

“Aunt Jack?” Gabby was astounded, she had never heard anything about this side of her aunt’s character, she knew she’d been head girl and that she had loved her time at school but nothing about the wilder side of her character.

“You’ll have to look her up in the book when you get to school.” Pippa started, then faltered. “Oh, I mean, I…..” She trailed off weakly.

“It’s ok, I’m sure that one of you can read bits to me!” Gabby had taken a shine to Pippa due to the friendly tone of her voice and felt sorry for her embarrassment. “Look,” she continued, “I can’t see, fact, don’t tiptoe about it, I don’t feel sorry for myself and I don’t want you to either.”

“Can I ask something?” Abi asked shyly.

Only one post tonight folks - getting ready for the first Championship show of the season and were in the ring at 9.00 am tommorrow so a very early start. Enjoy! “You just have!” Mel interrupted with a grin.

“Go on,” Gabby urged ignoring Mel.

“Have you always been blind?”

“No, it used to be able to see, but a long time ago, I’ve been blind for over twice the length of time I was able to see for.” Gabby explained, “anyway, I have my eyes now,” she reached down to pet the dog asleep in the aisle, “I can manage just as well as the next person.”

“What sort of dog is he?” Abi asked, more than anything to change the subject. “I thought that most guide dogs were Labradors or German Shepherds.”

“Not all of them, the most famous guide dog in the country isn’t either of those!” Gabby replied.

“Most famous guide dog?” Mel asked, “I don’t think I know any at all, well, until I met Polo anyway!”

“The most famous guide dog is a curly coated retriever, she belongs to an MP and goes to the House of Commons.”

“Polo isn’t one of those either though is he?” Abi asked still staring at the dog.

“No, he’s not, he’s a standard poodle.”

“A standard poodle!”

“Yes,” Gabby’s tone was defensive.

“But, I always thought they were like, fluffy things, with silly haircuts.” Pippa replied.

“They can be fluffy with silly haircuts,” Gabby replied with a grin, “I couldn’t be doing with that so Polo has a pet clip. He was shaved right down last week, I just have to brush him each day and then he will get clipped again in the holidays.”

“Poodles aren’t working dogs are they though? How come you have him rather than a usual guide dog.”

“Poodles were working dogs, they retrieve from water just like Labradors. There very clever too. You don’t get a guide dog because it’s a breed you want, you go along to the centre and they match you with a dog, I got lucky, I got Polo.”

For the remainder of the journey to the coast the four girls chattered about school in general. As the train pulled into Dover the prefects came to oversee the gathering of belongings for the change onto the boat.

“Please, I need to exercise Polo before he gets on the boat.” abby explained to the prefect in charge of her section as they lined up to get off the train.

“That’s fine, Miss Phillips, our games mistress, is coming to take you to a grassed area. When we get off the train by the doors and she will fetch you, she’s got to see to the juniors first.”

“Thank you,” Gabby felt somewhat awed by the older girls efficiency.

“We’ll wait with her,” Abi volunteered.

“All right,” the prefect replied, “but no loitering when Miss Phillips comes for Gabby, I don’t want to get halfway across the channel to find I’ve left you three behind!”

Cos your all so nice and kind with your replies and good wishes for the show.............. (which obviously worked as Bertie got his second Challenge Certificate today - only one more to go and he becomes a Champion!)

The ferry crossing went a smoothly as could be expected for a breezy September day, some of the younger girls were overcome with sea sickness but we quickly attended to by the escort mistresses and duty prefects. Gabby and Polo, having been returned to the trio by Miss Phillips, seemed to enjoy the crossing spending much of the time on one of the decks so that Polo could have some fresh air.

After the ferry came further travel by train and after what was beginning to Gabby to seem like eternity they changed to coaches for the final leg of their journey.

“Tired?” Abi asked from the seat next to her.

“A little,” Gabby said not wishing to let on that in fact she was totally exhausted, not just with the journey but with the whole emotional stress of the journey.

“I’m shattered,” admitted Abi, “and on top of that I ache all over.”

“Not your leg?” Mel asked leaning over from the seat behind where she and Pippa had been sitting.

“Yes, but keep your voice down,” Abi said crossly, “I don’t want them fussing.”

“Abi,” Pippa’s voice held a warning tone in it. “You promised that you would tell them if you were in pain.”

“I know,” Abi’s voice was almost a hiss, “I will, just shut up before someone overhears.” The two girls behind sat back down, Gabby could still hear them muttering but couldn’t make out the words. Abi had sat back in her seat in silence.

“What’s wrong with your leg?” She asked timidly, hoping her question wouldn’t get her snapped at in response.

“I had an accident, about eighteen months ago,” Abi’s voice was strained, “I broke my leg, quite badly. Its more or less healed but occasionally it gets painful.”

“Can’t you take some painkillers?”

“No,” Abi gave a rueful laugh, “You have to give all your medicine to the staff and they dole it out. I don’t want them to know, the doctors said that if my leg was better I could go back to winter sporting this year.”

“Oh,” Gabby fell silent, pretty sure that she wouldn’t be able to join in any sort of sports the school had to offer.

The silence lasted until the coaches drew to a halt and, led by Polo, Gabby made her way off the coach, her legs unsteady after the long journey. She followed the others into the great reception hall of the school, she stopped suddenly when she felt a hand on her elbow.

“Come this way please Gabby, you three as well.” The voice belonged to Miss Redmond and Gabby meekly allowed herself to be steered out of the crowd. “Once Miss Maynard has given the usual address the rest of the girls will all go up to their dormitories and freshen up before supper. However, I think Polo might like a quick leg stretch before he has his supper too.”

“Oh, thank you Miss Redmond,” Gabby sighed, “what with everything else I’d quite forgotten about Polo’s dinner.”

“That’s quite all right.” She turned to the other three girls who had come with her, “we have arranged an area for Polo to use at the back of the sixth forms garden, close to the hedge, it’s been fenced off. Why don’t you all run along and when he’s finished go along to your own dormitory, your all in hyacinth.”

You mean EBD had it right in Kennelmaid Nan? And it still works that way? Wow. I thought it was something she made up. Oh! Congrats to Bertie! Yay Polo's got his own garden/toilet area (I think!)

Yes Kennel Maid Nan is a fairly accurately written book so far as the UK show scene is concerned for that period - will comment more when this one gets discussed.

The dogs needs having been seen too the four girls made their way back into the main building of the school.

As they walked through the corridors towards the staircase which would lead up to their dormitory Gabby appeared to be muttering under her breath. The other three exchanged startled glances before Pippa spoke.

“Gabby,” she said gently, “are you all right?”

“Yes,” Gabby stopped suddenly surprised by the question. “Why do you ask?”

“Your, well, erm,” there was a short pause whilst Pippa thought how best to say it, “muttering?”

“Oh,” Gabby laughed out loud, “I didn’t mean to startle you, I’m trying to memorise the route. The easiest way for me to do it is to say what I am doing.”

“How do you mean?”

“Well, I count steps, and turns. That way I can count back when I’m going the other way.”

“Good grief, you must have a fab memory!” Mel exclaimed.

“It’s not too bad,” Gabby said with a grin. “Anyway, I’m cheating. When Aunt Jack fixed up for me to come here she took some measurements of the school and got a plan. I’ve been trying to learn the layout for the last two months.”

The girls made their way up to their dormitory and Mel pushed open the door.

“Here we are!” she announced as she marched into the room, “which are our cubeys?”

“Hi there,” a new voice came from Gabby’s right as she walked through the door.

“Lizzy!” Abi exclaimed, “are you in here with us this year?”

“Not only is she in with us,” Pippa interrupted, “but judging where she’s just come from she’s our dormy pree!”

I've been wondering this as well Kate. Enjoying the drabble. Laughing

No I don't have any contacts in RNIB and although I had known several blind or partially sighted people that was many years ago. I have however used several of my own habits for when i am without my glasses as my own vision is almost nil without them

“It’s true,” Lizzy sounded embarrassed by this admission. “You three are in the cubeys down this side, Mel at the far end, then Abi then Pippa. We’ve got two third formers and then there are two new girls in the dorm this term, xxx who is opposite Mel and a Gabrielle Heath who has the cubey next to mine.”

“Gabby!” the owner of the name said quickly.

“Sorry” was Lizzy’s quick reply. “You four had better get a wriggle on if you want to freshen up before Abendessen.”

The door of the dormitory banged open and two giggling twelve year olds tumbled into the room almost knocking into Gabby and Polo.

“Hey!” Pippa admonished, “watch where your going Nell!”

“Sorry Pip,” the one identified as Nell replied, “I didn’t see you there.” She seemed to pause only to draw breath before she continued with a groan. “Don’t say your in here with us this year?”

“Yes, and?” Lizzy replied.

“This is going to be dreadful!” she said dramatically. “Not only do I have a sinking feeling that one of my cousins is going to be head girl but now I’ve got two in the dormitory with me!”

“Poor Nell” Abi replied with a laugh. “It’s worse than that though”

“How can it be!”

Lizzy was grinning broadly as she replied, “because I’m your dorm prefect!”

Nell gave a tragic sigh and stropped off to her cubicle muttering under her breath at the evilness of the authorities. Her contemporary, who had so far not said a word, slipped away after her.

“You three sort yourselves,” Lizzy instructed, “I’ll show Gabby round her cubey and then you can show her the bathroom.”

With that Lizzy took Gabby by the arm and led her over to her cubey.

“Okay,” Lizzy began awkwardly, “I’m really not sure how to do this, so how about if I explain where everything is and leave you to get used to things.”

“I’m sure that will be fine,” Gabby said with a grin not admitting to the poor flustered girl in front of her that she knew the lay out of the cubey already thanks to her aunt’s foresight in obtaining details.

For about three minutes she allowed Lizzy to “show” her where the meagre contents of the cubey were, the main feature being the bed, to the left of which was a bureau with three draws and a cupboard. Two chairs were at the side of the bed and then, unlike anyone elses cubey, a dog bed was set at the foot of the bed for Polo.

“Thank you.” Gabby said simply when Lizzy stopped talking, “I can take it from here.” She commanded Polo to wait in the bed and then inched her way over to the bureau. Placing her overnight bag on the bed she began swiftly to unpack, running her fingers over the front of the drawers before she decided which to use for each item. Lizzy stood watching with her mouth open as Gabby put away each item in the correct draw, as required by the authorities.

“You ready?” Mel enquired having seen to her own domains.

“Yes, lead on,” Gabby replied with a grin and the two, accompanied by Polo, made their way to the bathrooms leaving Lizzy standing open mouthed in the middle of the dormitory.

Supper was followed swiftly by bed and as Gabby snuggled down under the warm duvet she sighed with relief, she was finally here at the Chalet School following in the footsteps of her grandmother and her beloved aunt. In the final moments before sleep claimed her she felt a gentle pressure on the end of the bed as Polo crept to his usual sleeping place.

Cos like of course he was going to stay in the dog bed (just like mine do honest!)

Is anyone else confused with whose who out of the Maynard brigade? They really are taking over! Thanks for the updates!

Not a post but just a quick explanation.

Abi - Juliet's grandaughter (not a mayard though!)
Pippa - Con's grandaughter
Lizzy - Phillipa's daughter
Nell - Geoff's daughter
Joanna - Charle's daughter
Tessa - Len's daughter (oh she hasn't appeared yet!)

I think that's all that will get mentioned in person but maybe not as Rupert is having strange ideas!

Now what would matey be doing at school in 2004 (ie last term) at the age of nearly 100? I think you'll find there is a health centre now and housemistresses - anyway, Polo isn't going to get caught on the bed - he's a very clever dog!!

Cecil stood on the stage at the front of the hall and looked out over the sea of mainly eager young faces waiting to hear the start of term announcements. ‘Not a bad looking set of girls’ she thought to herself as her eyes ranged from the youngest members of the junior school, seated on the floor at the front of the hall, to the important body of young women commonly known as the prefects who occupied the final row of chairs.

“Good morning and welcome to the new school year,” she began her clear voice carrying to the back of the hall. “This term we have thirty six new girls and although the majority make up the two first forms, there are several new girls in higher forms. I expect that you will make all our new starters welcome and lend a hand to help them whilst they find their feet. In a short while, I will ask Miss Richards to read out the form lists and then you will all make your way to your form rooms. Most of your time today will be taken up with unpacking and getting your books and stationary ready for the start of lessons tomorrow.”

An audible groan arose at this statement from the ranks of the third formers and Cecil paused briefly. Having made those forms feel very conspicuous Cecil felt she could continue with her speech, knowing full well that the actual perpetrators of the groaning would be made to feel very sorry for themselves by their playmates.

“I just have a couple of general announcements to make, firstly, I am sure that you will all be pleased to know that winter sporting activities will resume this term.” General murmurs of excitement arose at this statement and Cecil waited patiently for silence to return. “Secondly, we have been invited to take part in a Carol Concert which will take place in Geneva towards the end of term, your form mistresses will explain more about this to you later on. Finally, I can advise that our head girl this year is Joanna Maynard, her deputy is Marie van der Graz and games will fall into the care of Heidi Dretscher.”

Cecil sat back down in her seat as her secretary made her way to the lectern and swiftly read through the form lists. As expected Pippa, Mel and Abi were in Upper IVa and Gabby was relieved to find she would be joining them. The other new girl, Rosemary Harper, was also in their form although it appeared she had not arrived yet.

As the school were dismissed, Mel linked her arm through Gabby’s. “Come on,” she whispered, “let’s go bag ourselves a decent desk!”

Well I'd still have liked to see her reaction to it. It's called wishfull thinking, and is not required to bear any relationship to reality (or what passes for reality round here). And a housemistress could be equally unimpressed at the sight of doggy footprints on the sheets, so that scene is still a possiblity...

Gabby followed Mel through the rabbit warren of corridors leading from the main hall to their classroom. Although talking was forbidden in the corridors Mel occasionally whispered details of particular rooms they were passing. Gabby was aware from the sound of footsteps that they were not alone in the corridors and could tell by the way the foot steps stopped when she went past that she was being watched.

It wasn’t a new feeling, but it made her uncomfortable. Whilst she had been told that she looked no different to the others, she knew that none of them had their hand gripped tightly onto the harness of a dog who acted as a guide.

The stares had been one of the reasons that Gabby had only ever once gone out with a white stick, she shuddered remembering that all too brief trip with her parents to the shopping centre. It wasn’t just that she could feel the staring from other shoppers she didn’t like, being blind she had come to rely more on her other senses and her hearing was very good. She had heard the muttering, she wasn’t sure what was worse the condescending pity of the adults or the crueller comments usually made by those of her own age.

Eventually they came to a halt and Gabby heard the door being pushed open, inside the room was filled with the excited chatter of her new classmates, most of whom were discussing their holidays.

“Morning all!” Mel said loudly as she walked forwards into the room, “everyone had good hols?”

Some what concerned that you have all jumped to the conclusion that the girls are bullies. They aren't, many people stare when they come accross disability for the first time and don't know how to react - it's not bullying, it's poor understanding and an inability to deal with something they don't understand.

A general chorus of girls replied, confirming that they had indeed had good holidays and asking Mel about her own.

“No time for that now, our form mistress will be here in a moment!” Mel warned, “Everyone, this is Gabby and Polo.”

Gabby was welcomed with a chorus of polite hellos and welcomes from around her.

“Thank you,” she said simply.

“Quick, our desks, where do you want to sit?” Mel asked.

“It has to be near a power point,” Gabby explained. “The laptop needs to run off the mains most of the time.”

“Here,” Pippa interrupted, “it looks like the laptop has already been set up on this side, look, there’s the socket under the window.”

“Come on, lets grab these ones around it,” Abi suggested, “there’s one next to it and two in front.”

Speedily Pippa guided Gabby to her desk where, once she was seated, she unclipped Polo from his harness.

“Well, he isn’t working at the moment,” she explained.

“Quite, mistresses coming!” a voice unknown to Gabby hissed across the classroom and almost immediately silence fell.

Gabby heard the door pushed open and footsteps cross the room. There was a generalised scraping sound as chairs were pushed backwards and the girls rose to their feet. Having realised what was happening Gabby quickly stood too but was unable to join in the chorus of girls greeting their mistress as till now she did not know who it was.

“Please be seated.” The mistress, now identified as Miss Williams, said quietly. “Welcome to Upper IVa, for most of you this will be your final year as a senior middle and, more importantly it is the first year of your GSCE course work. As you were advised this morning lessons will start tomorrow so today we need to make sure that you all understand your timetables and that you have your text and exercise books.” She paused to look round the room. “Yes Mel?” she said noting that young lady’s hand was raised.

“Please,” Mel said getting to her feet and speaking formally, “Can I introduce Gabrielle Heath?”

“Thank you Mel,” Miss Williams smothered the smile creasing the corners of her mouth at the formality with which the introduction had been made, particularly bearing in mind that Mel wasn’t renowned for being the most formal and well behaved of girls. “Welcome Gabrielle, I hope you will work hard and enjoy yourself at school.”

“Thank you,” Gabby rose to her feet as she spoke, Polo, who had been lying next to her desk, jumped up immediately in case he was needed. “I hope I shall enjoy myself too, but, please, can I just be called Gabby?”

“Yes of course,” Miss Williams replied promptly, “Gabby it is.”

Gabby settled herself back into her seat with a sigh thinking once again that family names had a lot to answer for.

There was a sharp knock on the door, which was almost immediately pushed open.

“Please Miss Williams,” the voice of Joanna Maynard was one which Gabby recognised, the tone however was somewhat more formal to the tone she had used when talking to them on the train. “I’ve bought your other new girl, this is Rosemary Harper.”

“Thank you Joanna,” Miss Williams replied, “come along in Rosemary.”

Gabby heard the door shut and one set of foot steps walk into the room.

“Welcome to Upper IVa,” she continued, “I hope you enjoy yourself whilst you’re at school Rosemary. Now, where is there a spare desk?”

“Please,” someone said from further forward in the room, “there’s one here.”

“Thank you Heather,” the mistress replied, identifying the voice for Gabby, “Rosemary, please take the desk between Heather and Marie.”

“Yes Miss.” Rosemary replied promptly though her tone was sulky.

“Now,” the mistress continued, “this morning they will be sending for you a dormitory at a time to unpack. In addition, Miss Maynard will be seeing all the new girls during the morning. Mel, I know your assisting Gabby, but who is doing duty for Rosemary?”

No one replied and after a while Pippa rose to her feet.

“I don’t think anyone was assigned Miss Williams, Rosemary didn’t arrive till this morning, but she’s in our dormitory.”

“Very well, in that case I would suggest that you look after Rosemary.” Miss Williams turned back to the other new girl. “Rosemary, Pippa Richardson will show you the ropes, any questions you have should be addressed to her. If she is unable to help then please come to me, the same goes for you Gabby, if Mel can’t help with something then I will do my best to assist.”

“Thank you Miss Williams,” Gabby replied properly. Rosemary didn’t reply.

“Now then,” Miss Williams began but was interrupted by yet a further knock on the door.

ps - I may need a beta for part of this im not to sure about later on - any volunteers?

Believe you me, it's just as annoying to have to explain over and over again that yes your full name *is* Katie, and yes you're sure that it *isn't* short for anything and is in fact what you were christened! It's amazing how many teachers didn't believe me!

Thank you for all offers to beta! And i know what you mean about names - I don't answer to my full name!!

“Enter,” she requested.

The door opened and a high childish voice said primly.

“Please Miss Williams, may Hyacinth, Lavender and Jonquil dormitories please go and unpack now.”

“Thank you Annelise,” Miss Williams smiled at the second former who had bought the message. “Would the girls from those dormitories please go as quickly and quietly as you can.”

Aside from Gabby, the trio and Rosemary there were six other girls in the form who rose to their feet. Gabby quickly clipped on Polo’s harness at which he immediately stood to attention ready to work.

The girls left for the dormitory with Pippa falling in step with her new charge.

“Why has,” Rosemary began loudly before Pippa interrupted with a whisper

“We aren’t allowed to talk in the corridors,” was all she said before returning to silence herself. Rosemary stalked along the corridor next to Pippa her head held high and an injured look on her face, but she did so in silence as requested.

The door to their dormitory was already open and inside they found Lizzy, Nell and her friend, Jayne, hard at work unpacking under the supervision of their house mistress, Miss Redmond, and the second prefect, Marie van der Graz.

“Come along,” Miss Redmond urged, “I’ve got two other dormitories to oversee as well as yours.”

The Abi, Pippa and Mel went straight to their cubicles, where at the end of each bed sat a large suitcase. Gabby went to walk to her own cubicle but was stopped in her tracks by Rosemary.

“Here, you can’t bring a dog in a bedroom, it’s not hygienic. He’ll have to wait outside.”

“What!” Gabby exclaimed, completely shocked.

“You heard,” Rosemary put her hands onto the dogs harness to prevent him walking forwards.

“Ladies,” a chilly voice Gabby couldn’t identify came from behind Rosemary’s shoulder. “Perhaps I might be of assistance, Gabby, take Polo to your cubicle and wait for me to come and help you unpack.”

Gabby hurried past to the safety of her own domains where she instructed Polo to stay in his bed. There was nothing else she could do as she didn’t know where her suitcase was so she perched on the end of the bed, leaning over the end to scratch Polo’s woolly coat between his ears.

“Now then, has no one told you that your not allowed to sit on the bed?” Miss Redmond’s voice stated calmly from the entrance to the cubicle.

Okay, giving Rosemary the benefit of the doubt, perhaps she's never come across guide dogs before, but even so she could have been more polite in saying anything. And if she DID know then she needs a good smack!

Yes, as much as I don't like 'dogs in the house' I certainly exclude guide dogs from that category! (I'd still think eww, but would never dream of letting it show - and if it did would have to apologise to Gabby and Polo, explaining I am trying to overcome my prejudice!)

Serious point - anyone who is asthmatic with attacks triggered by dogs would have 50 fits at being asked to share a bedroom with them (even if there are curtains between the beds) Even sharing a classroom could cause a lot of problems - the reason why there now aren't meant to be any furry pets (gerbils etc) in classrooms. Part of me thinks it's very sad that there can't be pets in classroms any more and part of me is really pleased Love the story Kate

Maybe Rosemary is afraid of dogs, but doesn't want people to know so is showing it in a rather aggressive way. Or maybe she's had to leave a beloved dog behind at home and feels it's unfair when Gabby has Polo. Liz *willing to give the benefit of the doubt for the moment*

Before anyone does have fifty fits bear in mind that a poodle is a none shedding dog and is one of the breeds (there are a few) which are considered to be less of an allergen risk. Will not now go into the fact that dog hair has nothing to do with triggering asthma but rather it is the dander. Guide dogs have done some serious breeding of poodle x labradors to try and reduce the asthma/allergen risk. Oh, and no one would have been put in the dorm if they had asthma!

“I, um, well,” she stuttered leaping off the bed

“Never mind,” Miss Redmond laughed, “just don’t do it again. Now, I am going to lift your suitcase onto the bed, the first thing to do is to empty the suitcase completely and lay out your belongings on the bed, either Marie or myself will then come and check the things off against the master list.”

“I can manage fine,” Gabby assured her and once Miss Redmond had lifted the case onto the bed and departed she made short work of unpacking it’s contents.

“Are you ready to have your things checked?” the voice that had previously spoken to Gabby and Rosemary at the door, though with none of it’s earlier iciness, said from behind her.

“Yes thank you,” Gabby replied before asking timidly, “please, who are you?”

“Sorry Gabby, I should have said earlier, I’m Marie van der Graz,” the prefect apologised, “now shall we get on?”

Marie read through the list of belongings that every student was meant to bring with them to school and when all was found to be in order Gabby was left to put her belongings away in their prescribed place. She worked swiftly and within twenty minutes she was adding the finishing touches to her bedside cabinet, a clock with a Braille face and a small packed of dog biscuits for Polo.

Gabby stood in the middle of her cubicle wondering what she should do next.

“All finished,” Mell asked from outside, visiting it had been explained last night was strictly forbidden except for emergencies.

“Yes, what do we do now?”

“Well we go back to the form room but Miss Redmond has just told me that Miss Maynard is waiting to see you.”

“Oh, I,” Gabby stuttered.

“It’s okay,” Mel said, “Miss Maynard sees all the new girls on the first day, well apart from the first formers, who are all new,” she finished with a giggle.

“Where do I go?” Gabby asked as she clipped on Polo’s harness.

“Don’t worry, I’ll take you to the door.”

The pair walked from the dormitory down the corridor, on each side Gabby could hear the other girls unpacking, talking together quietly and, in some cases, the scathing comments of one of the supervising mistresses or prefects.

Eventually they arrived and after prompting from Mel Gabby tapped timidly on the headmistress’s door.

“Herein,” Cecil Maynard’s voice rang out and Gabby pushed open the door with her left hand. Guided by Polo she made her way over to the desk, the office layout having been described to her by Mel only seconds before she left her outside the office.

“Take a seat Gabby, it’s just in front of you.” the voice was warm and friendly.

Once Gabby was seated, and Polo laying down at her feet her headmistress continued.

“First of all I want to say how pleased I am that you are joining us this term. I don’t expect everything to be plain sailing but if there is anything that we can do to help you during your time at school please don’t be afraid to ask. Now your settling in all right so far?”

“Yes thank you, everyone has been very nice and helpful,” Gabby replied not mentioning the comments made by the other new girl in her form. “Mel has been very good to me,” she continued.

“I’m glad to here it,” there was amusement in Cecil’s voice. “Now,” she continued, “we need to discuss your time table. As you are starting your GSCE courses this year there are some subjects that are compulsory, such as English and Maths.”

Gabby tried hard not to make a face at this announcement as she would most dearly love to give up maths, which she detested in all shapes and forms.

“Now, at this school we also insist on other core subjects at GSCE, obviously, as we speak the languages day and day about you will be doing French and German. In addition everyone does English Literature, geography and history. Then we come to your choices, we normally recommend that you take at least one form of science either chemistry, physics, biology or geology. However, I have spoken to Miss Ferdinand, our head of science, and she has advised that unfortunately our chemistry laboratory is not set up in such a way that it would be safe for you to do the practical work. She has suggested that you would be able to do any of the other three sciences should you wish.”

“Do I have to do a science?” Gabby asked plaintively, her previous experience with the subjects had not been good, the lack of support staff had meant that she basically spent the lessons doing nothing but sitting on her own to one side of the classroom.

“I think you should try one,” Cecil coaxed, “what about Geology?”

“Okay,” Gabby’s tone was not enthusiastic.

“Fine,” Cecil said moving swiftly on, “you then have a choice of two other subjects, either Religious studies, Physical Education, Music, Spanish, Italian or IT.”

“IT please,” Gabby replied promptly, her interest in the subject having been nurtured by her Aunt Jack since her earliest days. “Oh, and music.”

“Your sure?” Cecil asked and when Gabby nodded vigorously she continued, “very well, what instrument do you play?”

“Well, I used to play the clarinet, but mostly I just sing. I was in the choir at the Rowans.”

“I shall look forward to hearing you,” Cecil said simply. “Now we have your subjects we can ask Miss Richards to quickly draft up your timetable. Stay there a second.”

Two lovely scences - thanks. But, speaking as a science geek - the school seems to make taking lots of sciences difficult. I'd have taken all the sciences (maybe not geology) and give some of the arts courses a miss.

Loving this Kate - sorry wasn't criticising re the dogs in bedrooms - jsut wondered if it was something the staff hadn't thought of re the other girls. I grew up with a westie and wasn't too bad with him - my friends semi persian massivly long haired cat didn't trigger me at all, but the tiny short haired ginger kitten had them almost calling an ambulance for me Rolling Eyes Wish I could have done geology - sounds far more fun that chemistry

Gabby heard Cecil walk to the side of the room and a door, not the one she had come in by open. She could hear the quiet whisperings of the conversation between the head and her secretary and then the door closing and footsteps approaching the desk.

“Now then,” Cecil continued, “the school governors insist that all the girls get a certain amount of exercise and fresh air. Whilst the weather is fine we try and ensure that you go out for a walk each day, obviously you will take Polo and be with your class mates so that shouldn’t be too much of a problem should it?”

“No Miss Maynard,” Gabby replied promptly, glad that she wasn’t to be left out. “Please,” she continued, “what about games and suchlike?”

“Really, your English!” Cecil said with a laugh, causing Gabby to flush. “Your form began to play hockey last year, and also play netball, however, I don’t think that you will be able to participate in either of those games. Do you swim?”

“Yes,” Gabby replied eagerly.

“Good, we do have other girls who, for health reasons, can’t join in with the more energetic games, so during the winter they go swimming. In the summer you will do athletics with the rest of the girls but unfortunately not tennis.”

“What about winter sports?” Gabby asked tentively

“Well, I am pretty sure that we can arrange for you to go out sledding with the others.”

Gabby grinned widely at this pronouncement, what she really wanted was to be treated the same as all the other girls. She knew there would be some exceptions, where safety, either her own or the other girls, had to be taken into consideration but to be allowed to join in with the others pleased her immensely.

“Now, I need to talk to you about books and your laptop.” Cecil continued. “I understand that you can touch type?”

“Oh yes, at about 60 words per minute.”

“That’s good, you will be able to take notes during lessons using your laptop. I believe that your aunt has set up your machine so that you will be able to do your prep using the Braille keyboard but that this will print out using a laser printer.”

“Yes, there is a function on the printer so that I can switch from Braille print outs to standard print outs.”

“Good, so you will be able to check your work using the Braille printer first.”

“Yes, although I can also get the programme to read what I have typed in back to me before I print it.”

“Very well, though I would rather you didn’t use that programme during preparation as it might disturb the other girls.”

“Yes Miss Maynard,” Gabby replied properly.

“Now, your aunt also told me that your lap top has a built in translator which will not only automatically translate your work into another language but allow you to enter single words which it will then translate.”

“It does,” Gabby agreed.

“Now I know you can’t remove the programme from your computer but I want your word that you will not use the programme to translate your preparation from English into the required language of the day, all your work must be your own. Can you promise me that you will do that?”

“I promise,” Gabby said solemnly, to be honest she hadn’t even thought about doing this until Miss Maynard had mentioned it.

“Very well,” Cecil continued. “I will arrange for your text books, all of which are in Braille, to be sent to the classroom along with the rest of the forms books. Now, that just about sums everything up. Do you think you can find your own way back to your form room or do you want me to send for someone to take you?”

“Can I try and find my own way?” Gabby pleaded.

“I am sure that you can,” Cecil’s voice held the hint of a laugh, “the question is really whether or no you may. That was my own headmistresses own pet hate, the improper use of can and may.”

Gabby was confused and didn’t know how to respond. Cecil continued,

“Of course you may make your own way back, before you go however, I would just like to wish you the very best of luck at the Chalet School. I hope you have an enjoyable time with us. If you have any problems then my door is always open. Now run along, and ask Rosemary Harper to come to the office.”

Gabby slowly but successfully made her way back to the form room, Polo’s nails clicking on the wooden floors of the corridor was the only sound as she walked.

Before knocking on the door she believed was her form room Gabby took a deep breath and, for a moment her confidence slipped. What if this wasn’t her form room, what if she was about to try and go into another form room, worse yet, what if she wasn’t in the right place at all, in which case where was she and how would she get back.

Laying her hand briefly on Polo’s head, a comforting gesture, she gathered herself together.

“Well, if I am wrong, it probably won’t be the most embarrassing mistake I will make,” she said quietly before tapping on the door.

“Come in,” the familiar voice of her form mistress called out and Gabby stepped through the door with a sigh of relief. “All sorted?” Her form mistress asked.

“Yes, thank you,” Gabby replied, “Please, Miss Maynard would like to see Rosemary Heath now.”

“Of course, Pippa will you please take Rosemary to Miss Maynard’s office?”

“Yes Miss Williams,” Pippa said primly. “Come on Rosemary.”

Gabby heard the chairs scrape backwards against the floor followed by footsteps and the opening and closing of the door as the two girls left.

“Can you find your way back to your seat Gabby?” Her form mistresses asked.

“I think so,” Gabby replied, trying to sound confident and failing completely. She turned to the direction she thought her desk was in and, guided by Polo, began to walk down the narrow aisle between the desk. She was unsure how far she needed to go to reach her desk until, from her left hand side she heard Mel whisper. With a grin at her friend she safely located her chair and sat down.

The rest of the morning was spent collecting text books whilst others came and went to do their unpacking. Eventually the electric bell rang out harshly signalling the end of morning lessons.

“The bell for Mitagessen will be in half an hour,” Miss Williams advised. “Please go quietly to your cloakrooms and get ready then make your way to the dining room. After lunch as the weather is fine we to go out for a ramble, please make sure that after lunch you get into your walking boots and wrap up warm as there is a bite to the wind.”

The girls filed out, in silence and made their way to the cloakrooms, which Mel had explained to Gabby yesterday the girls called splasheries. Only once they were safely inside were they able to talk freely.

“I am so glad that we are going out this afternoon!” One of the girls exclaimed loudly almost as soon as the door was shut.

“Me too!” Was the general response which rose from around Gabby as she made her way to her locker which contained her hairbrush, handwashing kit and a small collapsible water dish for Polo.
“Gabby, are you coming with us?” someone she couldn’t identify asked.

“Of course she is Julie,” Mel replied for her, identifying the speaker.

“Mel’s right,” Gabby said with a smile. “Miss Maynard said this morning that I was to join in the usual walks with everyone else.”

“It isn’t a walk!” Another voice chimed, “it’s a ramble, there’s a difference.”

“Are you sure you can manage?” asked yet another girl, whose voice and accent sounded very similar to the voice identified as Julie.

Gabby nodded her head, confused as to who was who. Abi seemed to notice her discomfort and replied, essentially putting a stop to the questioning.

Miss Di - the curtsey got removed by Cecil when she became head, it's explained in CS in Court. Oh, and dog's don't get frostbite - how on earth would Malumtes, huskies, vallhunds etc work in the artic if they did!!

“I am sure that if either Gabby or I weren’t to go on this afternoon’s ramble Miss Williams would have said.”

“She’s right, both of you are allowed to go,” Pippa’s quiet voice interrupted from the doorway. “Anyway, were only going up past the san and around the back shelf, Maynie just told us.”

The girls soon returned to preparing themselves for mitagessen and Gabby, after filling up Polo’s water dish and setting it down at the end of the room, began to attend to her short cropped dark hair. She listened carefully to the voices around her as she brushed.

She could identify Pippa, Abi and Mel with ease but the other’s were somewhat confusing. She must have been frowning as suddenly she felt a hand on her elbow.

“I say,” Abi’s voice was gentle, “are you all right?”

“I can’t get everyone straight!” Gabby’s tone had a hint of despair in it.

“Oh! I hadn’t thought about that,” Abi replied honestly.

“You don’t have to, you can see who you’re talking to!” Was the snapped response.

“Sorry Gabby, I didn’t mean it like that.” Abi sounded upset and Gabby regretted instantly the tone she had used.

“Is everything okay?” Mel’s voice was low, as though she wasn’t trying to be overheard by everyone else.

“Yes,” Gabby snapped instantly as, at the same time Abi said quietly.

“Not really.”

“What’s the matter?” Mel asked in gentle tones so unlike her usual ones, “is it something I can help with?

When Gabby didn’t make any effort to respond Abi said quietly,

“Gabby’s having difficulty working out who’s who.”

“That’s normal for any new girl, I am sure Rosemary’s having the same trouble.” Mel glanced over to where Pippa was busy straightening her dress whilst her charge sat looking cross and at the same time miserable on the wooden bench that ran down one side of the splashery.

“What about some introductions?” Abi suggested and before Gabby could object Mel spoke loudly.

“Everyone, I think Gabby and Rosemary need to know who’s who! If they say their names will that make things clearer?” The last part of her sentence was addressed to Gabby who could only nod, as she was too embarrassed to say anything.

There was general agreement to Mel’s plan of action and one by one the girls stated their names, most of them curious about how well Gabby would be able to identify them in the future. Eventually they finished and Gabby, who was recovering from her embarrassment thanks to her form mates willingness to help her out said with a grin,

“Thank you, I shall try and remember which voice belongs to which name but I’m making no promises!”

At that juncture the bell sounded and Inga Haneskog, who had been appointed their form prefect and whose Scandinavian accent made her easily identifiable, suggested that they make their way to mitagessen.

As they lined up Gabby, who was stood in line behind Mel clearly heard Rosemary say to Pippa.

“That dog isn’t going to be allowed in the dining room is it?”

“I would think so,” Pippa replied blandly, her tone held a hint of contempt.

“That’s so unhygienic, I hope I’m not at the same table, I’ve already had to request that I change dormitories. I don’t know what they were thinking of letting someone like that come to boarding school in the first place.”

It was a good thing that at that point Inga signalled for silence and they made their way out into the corridor. Gabby was deeply shocked and as for Mel, it was only Abi’s restraining hand which had gripped her arm tightly, to the point of pinching it, that stopped her from telling this jumped up new girl exactly what she thought of her.

GREAT story, I love how you're working out all the technical problems she'd have as well as the more obvious ones. That's what us cube-workers who work with that stuff do.

Mitagessen at upper IVa’s table passed in almost frosty silence. Most of the old Chalet girls were horrified at Rosemary’s statement, though some were feeling uncomfortable at the realisation that perhaps they too had thought similar thoughts to those she voiced. Pippa was icily polite to her charge, at the moment too angry to risk speaking to her about what she had said.

Gabby herself had become quiet and withdrawn, during the meal she did not speak at all and barely touched her food. Unfortunately, neither Abi nor Mel were able to talk to her about, as both were to preoccupied in trying to keep Mel’s volatile temper under control.

The atmosphere remained strained as the girls changed for their walk, although some were now beginning to talk nobody mentioned Rosemary’s outburst. When Miss Williams arrived with two of the sub-prefects who were to join them she noticed at once that all was not right with her form.

“All right, everyone here?” She asked, the girls nodded in response so she continued, “very good, pair up and form a croc.”

The girls, most of whom were already in pairs, formed into the line as requested. Pippa, gritting her teeth said quietly to Rosemary.

“You had better come with me.”

She steered Rosemary away to the back of the line, away from Mel who was partnered with Gabby. This left Abi with a Marie Valdes, one of three French girls in the form who usually hung out together. Miss Williams sent the two prefects to the front of the line and they began their walk.

Gabby, who had still not said anything since leaving the splashery walked alongside Mel with Polo on her left hand side. The surface of the pathway was good and Gabby walked with confidence. Whilst they walked Mel kept up a running commentary, describing the buildings they were passing and what the path was like ahead of them.

After about twenty minutes of walking in this way, Miss Williams called them to a halt.

“Now girls, you are free to break ranks. Groups of no more than five please, and no one is to be left on their own. Please make sure you do not get too far ahead, or left too far behind. If there is any bad behaviour, which I don’t expect from a group of girls your age, you will not break ranks on walks in future.”

Several of the girls cast meaningful looks at each other on hearing this pronouncement, it was only twelve months ago that they had found themselves almost completely kept to the school’s premises, and those walks they did go one were formal and restrained. No one wanted to repeat the miserable time they had had.

“Shall we continue?” Miss Williams asked to which, this time, she received a vocal response. “Sort yourselves!” she said with a chuckle as the girls broke ranks and began to form small groups, usually of three or four. Pippa looked sadly at Gabby, Mel and Abi, who had left her French partner and gone to join them. She didn’t dare leave Rosemary on her own and yet she knew that with her in tow she would not be welcome to join her usual friends.

Miss Williams watched her class carefully, still trying to spot what was causing the tension between them. She noted at once that Pippa didn’t join up with Mel and Abi and that she lacked her usual cheerful expression. None of the other small groups approached the two girls. It seemed to her that the form had sent the new girl to Coventry and Pippa, as her sheepdog, was suffering the same fate as a result.

“Pippa, Rosemary, come and join me, we will walk at the back,” she called and once the two girls were stationed one at each side of her the form began to walk.

Gabby walked alongside Mel and Abi in silence whilst the two of them chattered generally about the school. Gabby didn’t join in the conversation as she was still brooding about what Rosemary had said.

“Of course having purple hair helps!” Mel’s statement snapped her out of her own thoughts.

poor Pippa being sent to Coventry with Rosemary..... what's a decent length of time for a new girl to settle down and therefore be abandoned by her sheepdog? a day?

“Sorry,” she spluttered, “you’ve got purple hair!” Gabby had imagined each of the girls from the sound of their voices and this did not stand with her vision of her mentor at all.

“No,” admitted Mel with a laugh, “I was just trying to get your attention, you seemed to be miles away.”

“Sorry, I was,” Gabby said briefly, not really wishing to discuss where her train of thoughts had led her.

“Anyway, what made you splutter like that, would there be anything wrong with purple hair?”

“Mel!” Abi gasped, “don’t even think about it! Maynie would have a fit if you dyed your hair purple.”

“Spoil sport,” Mel’s voice was light and Gabby could hear the laughter in it. “Go on,” she continued, “tell us.”

“Well, because I can’t see you I have to imagine what you look like.” Gabby explained. “I try to build up a picture from how you sound like.”

“So how do you see us?” Abi asked with a laugh.

“I haven’t really known you long enough to decide,” Gabby replied, “but purple hair definitely didn’t figure!”

“How long does it take?”

“It depends on how well I know someone, I have to use my other senses to draw pictures in my mind.”

“How?” Both girls asked at once.

“It’s hard to describe,” Gabby warned. “It’s like, because I can’t see my other senses try to make up for it.”

“So you have like super hearings and stuff?”

“Sort of, my hearing is very good, as is my sense of smell, but most important is my sense of touch.”

“Why touch?” Abi asked

“Mainly because, through touch, I can read. It’s also how I let Polo guide me, I can feel through the harness even the smallest change in direction.”

“Was it difficult to learn Braille?”

“At first, I suppose it’s like normal reading, at first it’s difficult and you make a lot of mistakes but with practice it gets easier.”

I love the matter of fact way in which Gabby explains to her friends how she uses her other senses - and the fact that they are interested enough to ask the kind of questions designed to make her feel comfortable about explaining. Kate, your treatment of Gabby's experiences will do much to help other people understand that she really can lead a normal life, even in a boarding school. Now if *only* something can happen to change Rosemary's attitude.....

Whilst the three girls walked along chattering Pippa and Rosemary walked in silence each side of their form mistress. Although she had tried to initiate conversations about general matters with the two girls she received little or no response. As a result she had taken to asking direct questions, which sadly were receiving short monosyllabic responses. Eventually she stopped trying to engage the girls and the three walked on in silence.

By the time Miss Williams gave the signal for the girls to fall back into line Gabby was chattering happily with Mel, whose temper had now subsided, and Abi. Pippa however had not enjoyed her walk, having been stuck with a new girl who she really didn’t like very much at that moment and her form mistress.

There was hardly time to change their shoes before the bell rang for Kaffee and Kutchen, after which the girls were kept busy until Abendessen with, some still attending to their unpacking but most preparing for their lessons, which would begin the following day.

Prayers followed Abendessen and then, as most were tired from the busy day they had had, the middles and juniors were all sent to bed.

As the girls made their way up to the dormitory Rosemary turned to Pippa,

“I must go and check with Miss Maynard which dormitory I am being moved to.”

“I think you’ll find,” Pippa said calmly, “that if you were being moved they would have told you by now.”

“Oh surely they won’t leave me in Hyacinth with that dog, my parents would scarcely approve of me sleeping in the same room as a dog.”

“Well you’d better go and check then hadn’t you!” Pippa snapped, her temper finally getting the better of her.

“Your right,” Rosemary replied and before Pippa could stop her she had marched off in the opposite direction.

Pippa quickly ran to catch up with her friends, just as they were entering the dormitory.

“I say,” Abi asked, “what have you done with Rosemary?”

“I haven’t done anything with her, she’s gone to see Maynie about changing dorms.”

“Why would she want to do that?” Nell’s voice was muffled as she was pulling her pyjama top over her head as she spoke.

“It’s because she has to sleep in a dormitory with a blind girl who doesn’t belong here and her dog.” Gabby’s voice was full of bitterness as she spoke.

“Hey!” Abi objected, “you do belong here, if you didn’t they wouldn’t have accepted you. As for Polo,” she walked over and threw her arms round the dogs neck. “He’s not only an exceptionally talented and useful dog but he’s a sweetie too!” Polo seized his opportunity and slurped Abi’s face with his long pink tonge. “Yuck!” she gasped and then started to giggle.

Have to admit I have some sympathy for Rosemary. I'm petrified of dogs and really think I'd struggle relaxing enough to go to sleep if one (even as nice as Polo) was in the room. Obviously, I've got a lot less sympathy about the way she's going about it. And even less (or should I make that zero) sympathy if she's merely prejudiced - although even then I'd tend to think that it was her parents / who ever taught her such views that are to blame. Just thought I'd wade in with a slightly diferent view point Very Happy

Don't you know that some people still don't think that disabled people aren't real human beings? We have a triplegic friend who goes barmy sometimes when he is out with his family, because 'well-meaning' people will ask his family questions about him. This is a guy who earns a really good salary managing all the UK computer traffic for Reuters!

Miss Hocken taught me oral english when i was firstat secondary school in 1961 or thereabouts. She was a lovely lady but at first we didn't realise how bad her sight was, so we thought her rather odd. She explained that if she was looking straight at someone, that wasn't the person she could see, she saw someone at an angle. After a couple of years she had to give up teaching but still visited us a lot. Once she had Emma we saw a lot more of her too. She was not a lady yopu would ever forget.

“Come on, we’d better get ready for bed,” Pippa reminded them, her voice had lost some of the bitterness it had previously held.

The six girls got ready for bed and then, in pairs, made their way to the bathroom to clean their teeth.

“Maynie said the seniors would come up at about 9.00 didn’t she?” Nell asked.

“Yes,” her mostly silent friend Jayne replied.

“That means we’ve got about 15 minutes before Lizzy lands on us. What shall we do?” Nell grinned around the room impishly. “Pillow fight?”

“Nell Maynard!” Pippa exclaimed, “don’t you dare!”

“Spoil sport!”

“I’m not,” Pippa grinned at her cousin, “it’s just it’s a bit early in the term to end up in a row.”

“Are we allowed to read?” Gabby asked.

“Yes, providing we sit up in bed, or we can sit on the chairs in our cubeys, but you have to have your dressing gown and slippers on if you do that.” Abi replied.

“I don’t want to read,” Nell announced, “lessons start tomorrow and then I’ll be reading all term.”

“So what do you want to do then?” Mel asked.

“Just talk I guess, there isn’t much else we can do without Ms Pippa Prim deciding it will get us in trouble.”

“Oi!” Pippa exclaimed rushing over to where her cousin was standing, Nell, seeing Pippa’s approach ducked into her cubicle and Pippa had to stop at the entrance. “Just you wait, I’ll get you for that!”

“Gabby, can I ask you something,” Jayne asked shyly.

“Of course,” Gabby replied turning to smile at the younger girl.

“What’s it like, you know, not being able to see?”

“Jayne, what sort of question is that to ask?” Mel said with a groan, feeling that perhaps Gabby would rather not answer.

“I, just…..” was all Jayne could say.

“It’s all right Mel,” Gabby said quietly, “I knew that people would be curious. I bet I’m the first blind person any of you have met!”

The girls all indicated their agreement, although most of them had seen blind people out and about in their home towns they had never actually known anybody who was unable to see.
“Well,” was all Gabby could say before the door to the dormitory banged open. Rosemary marched through, her eyes stormy, behind her came Lizzy, head held high and face flushed.

“If I were you I would get yourself ready for bed quickly, the bell will go in 10 minutes for lights out,” Lizzy said angrily as she turned to her own cubicle.

“I take it your staying in here?” Pippa asked blandly.

“Yes,” Rosemary snapped. “Apparently, I’ve got no choice.” She turned on her heel and walked quickly to the other end of the dormitory.

“What on earth is up with her?” Nell whispered to the others, her eyes wide.

“Nothing for you to worry about,” Mel said sternly, “why don’t we all get ourselves into bed?”

“Probably not a bad idea,” Abi agreed and the girls disappeared into their own domains.

They waited in silence until the bell went and then Lizzy switched off the main light.

“Good night everyone,” Nell called out, “Sleep tight, make sure the bed bugs don’t bite!”

“Nell!” Lizzy said sternly, “Shut up.” The only response was a muffled giggle.

Soon the dormitory became quite and still. Gabby, although tired by the busy day she had had found that sleep was not come easily, her thoughts and emotions played on her mind. As she lay there nature decided on the best course of action and she felt herself slipping into sleep, the last thing she remembered was hearing a quiet muffled sobbing.

I suspect it may be Rosemary. Is it possible it's just homesickness, and Gabby and Polo are something either that remind her of something back home or something so different to what she's encountered before that it scares her maybe. I don't know. *eagerly waits for more* JackieJ

If Rosemary is really scared of dogs I can understand her wanting to move to a different dormy. Both Nicola and Helen are scared of dogs - mainly cos they've had dogs run up to them and jump up and lick them. Not nice when they dog is nearly as big as you Sad

Why was Lizzy flushed and angry? Glad Rosemary was told she'd have to stay -I don't think it can be because she's scared of dogs - if that were the case, or homesickness, you'd expect Cecil to be more sympathetic.Thank you Kate. Laughing

I am more than aware that people can be very afraid of dogs - though I have normally found that this is because they don't know how to act about them, with children today this is normally because they don't know any dogs. There is no excuse for a dog being badly behaved, jumping up at people etc though 9 times out of 10 it's the owner that needs training not the dog. Ok, some more, just for you!!

The next day arrived and with it the routine that would follow during the week for the rest of the term. At 7 am the rising bell sounded loudly throughout the school and in each dormitory girls began to get up and dress, the sound of doors opening and closing, footsteps walking so quickly that at times it could be termed as running, up and down the corridors. At 7.45 a second bell sounded and the school again fell silent as girls and mistresses alike spent five minutes in private prayer and thought.

A further bell then sounded to indicate that the girls should make their way to the dinning room for Frustuck which began at 8.00 am prompt. Frustuck over and the school split according to denomination with girls going to either the main hall or the gymnasium. Morning prayers were usually over by 8.50, at which time another bell rang to advise that lessons would begin ten minutes later.

Morning school lasted from 9.00 am, when the registers were taken by the form mistresses. Lessons began in earnest at 9.15 and ran through to 12.30, this time was split into two lessons with a fifteen minute break for a drink. Mitagessen was served promptly at 12.45 and this was followed at 13.30 by an hour in which the girls were forbidden to do any work. This time was usual spent out of doors if the weather allowed or, if it didn’t in the common rooms allocated to each section of the school.

Lessons began again at 14.30 and until the formal part of the school day ended at 15.45. Kaffe and Kutchen, supervised by the prefects was then served in the main dining room. After this the junior school, which comprised of the I and II forms, spent the hour from 16.15 to 17.15, doing preparation under the supervision of one of the junior mistresses in the largest of the classroom, which on occasion doubled as a lecture hall for visiting speakers.

Preparation for the middles, which comprised of seven forms split over the III and IV years, was done in their form rooms, each class being supervised by a prefect. Members of the senior school, from Inter V to the upper VI were trusted to do their preparation unsupervised, either in their form rooms or the library. Preparation for the seniors and middles lasted from 16.15 to 17.45 after which all the girls were under strict instructions that school work must be put to one side.

Until 18.30 the girls were free to spend time as they pleased, in the summer months this often meant spending time outside in the school’s grounds. In the winter months it meant spending time in the common rooms, particularly once the snow came. Abendessen was usually from 18.30 until 19.15 after which came prayers until 19.30.

From 19.30 to bed time twice a week the girls attended the Hobbies Club, an institution which had been founded in the earliest days of the school. Each year the school held a Sale of Work to raise funds for children affected by poverty and it was the goods they made in the Hobbies Club which they sold or raffled.

On Thursday nights during term time the school’s two Guide companies, Rangers and Brownies met. The school had a long tradition of guiding and nearly everyone in the school was a member, many starting off in rainbows as members of St Nicholas, which was in affect the school’s kindergarten. After leaving guides to become Rangers many of the girls undertook their training to become Guiders themselves.

The other two weeknights were usually spent relaxing in the common room, playing board games, using the school’s computers or just watching television, though very few girls chose to do the latter. Extra choir practice also took place during the evening. In the summer the girls were able to play tennis or to sit out in the evening sunshine, for those energetic pupils the school’s swimming pool was also open during this time.

During the week bed time for the junior’s came at 20.30, the middles at 21.15 and the seniors at 22.00. This routine only occasionally varied, for example, if the weather had been particularly bad but then a clear spell came lessons would be put to one side and the girls would go out for fresh air and exercise.

Over the weekends the rising bell did not go until 8.00 am and whilst on Saturday morning some time was spent doing the tail ends of preparation or music practice at 12.00 noon this stopped completely and the girls were able to spend time as they wished, within reason.

Saturday evenings were given over to games and entertainment, usually each form, except the juniors, took turns to entertain the rest of the school. Each term the staff also took a turn or two to provide the entertainment.

On Sunday mornings the girls attended one of the two chapels, which had been originally built as part of the school’s coming of age celebrations. The original buildings were still there though there had been several additions to both making them unrecognisable to anyone who had only seen them when they were first erected. The rest of the day was spent out of doors if possible, with the girls often taking packed lunches and going on rambles. If the weather made it impossible to go out then the girls entertained themselves in the same way they did of an evening, or with extra Hobbies Club.

Gabby settled well into the routine of the school, she was naturally intelligent and the structured way that the timetable ran meant that it was easy for her to join her classmates in most of the activities.

She kept up fairly well with most of her lessons, though she struggled as usual over maths. Her favourite lessons were history, English and music, subjects in which she always did first during preparation. She could not honestly say that she had a least favourite subject, even geology, which was new to all the girls taking it, she found enjoyable.

Out of school the other girls soon learnt that Gabby was keen swimmer and, providing someone assisted her in and out the pool, and told her when she was approaching the end of the lane she was able to beat most of them when racing. She joined guides, and was extremely pleased that she was placed in the same patrol as Pippa, Mel and Abi, with whom she was becoming fast friends.

The fact that she joined in with as much as she could showed the rest of the girls that blindness was not a disability that made you unable to be a normal school girl. There were the odd occasions, particular with girls not in her form and with whom she had little contact, where a misjudged comment would offend Gabby resulting in her becoming withdrawn. This only happened occasionally and if one of her three friends was close by then the speaker was usually put straight.

In all, Gabby was thoroughly enjoying herself at the Chalet School. The only fly in the ointment was Rosemary who, after her initial outburst against Gabby remained surly and unreasonable. She attended lessons with the rest of them but during her free time chose to remain on her own, shunning the fun and games which took place in the evenings.

Whilst new girls were not sheep-dogged after the first week or so Pippa felt that she had failed this particular girl. Whilst she continued to look out for her she felt that her efforts were unappreciated and that the affect it was having on her other friendships was not worth it.

Rosemary had learnt that it wouldn’t do to make any more complaints about Polo, as Miss Maynard had been most crushing, advising that in fact Rosemary’s parents had agreed to her being in Hyacinth with him. She occasionally commented at meal times about the unhygienic aspect of a dog in he dining room but this fell on deaf ears so far as the other girls were concerned.

She did, occasionally, make derogatory comments about Gabby herself, although never within hearing of Mel, who having heard her on one occasion had frightened her considerably with a display of temper that took almost the whole form’s efforts to calm. Fortunately, most of the girls in her own form took little or no notice of Rosemary’s comments, having drawn their own conclusions about Gabby during the first week or so of term.

There was only one thing which continued to bother Gabby, the sound of someone crying themselves to sleep. Nearly every night she heard it but when she asked the others in the dormitory about it they denied having heard a thing. Gabby was sure that she wasn’t imagining it but could do nothing as the sound was muffled and she didn’t dare investigate at night in case she woke the whole dormitory up.

Three weeks into term and the girls of Upper IVa were all working hard with their GSCE course work. Whilst preparation had always been taken seriously there was a much more grown up air in the IVth forms classrooms compared to those lower down the school.

The girls worked in silence, save for the scribbling of pens and the gentle tapping of Gabby’s key board. Suddenly, a piercing scream rang out that could be heard quite clearly from the form rooms nearby.

Joanna Maynard, rose to her feet behind the mistresses desk where she had been supervising preparation for upper IVa.

“I am putting you on your honour to keep working in silence,” she said gravely to the girls, many of whom had been so deeply in their work that the noise had made them jump.

Joanna quickly made her way down the corridor to the entrance hall, in the classrooms on either side of the corridor there was silence, save for the opening and closing of doors as the supervising prefects like herself left their duties to assist. Seeing as the entire prefect body would probably not be required to deal with what ever the problem was Joanna said quickly.

“Marie, stay with me, the rest of you go back to your classes, even if the bell goes, keep the girls there for the time being.”

In the entrance hall itself, at the foot of the stairs, a young girl lay full length on the floor. She was not at first recognisable as tied round her head was one of the long winter scarves they wore. The two prefects raced over to the fallen figure.

See I am a nice drabble writer, i don't leave your dangling over cliffs for too long (unlike others i could mention - but won't cos I know better!) Anyway, sorry for the short post - Law Soc coming to work tomorrow so have had no time to write in the afternoons!

“Nell!” Joanna gasped as she dropped to her knees. Gently, trying not to move her young cousin at all, she slipped the scarf over the top of her head.

“Nell, can you hear me?” Marie asked in a strong voice, when there was no response she repeated her question giving the girl a very gentle shake.

“Go and get help,” Joanna instructed, “they were having a staff meeting whilst the girls were in prep.”

As Marie sprinted off towards the school’s admin wing Joanna felt for the fallen girls pulse, sighing with relief as she felt the strong steady beats under her fingers. Nell’s breathing was strong and so after Joanna had checked over the girls legs and arms she gently turned her over into the recovery position.

“Thank goodness for first aid training!” she sighed. The sound of footsteps alerted her to the fact that help was at hand as Miss Maynard, Miss Redmond and the school’s nurse came rushing into the entrance hall.

“Joanna, what happened?” the nurse asked.

“I don’t know, I was in Upper IVa supervising preparation, there was a scream and when we got here Nell was lying at the bottom of the stairs.” As she spoke Joanna suddenly began to feel very sick.

“Sit down!” Cecil said quickly steering her niece to one of the chairs at the side of the hallway. For Joanna the room had begun to spin and black dots swam in front of her eyes. She felt herself pushed down onto a chair and then her upper body bent forwards over her lap.

“Take deep breaths Jo,” Cecil advised.

Joanna did as instructed and the sensation began to pass. Eventually she slowly sat up right.

“Sorry about that,” she said weakly.

“Don’t worry, you had a shock, it happens to all of us once in a while,”

“Miss Maynard!” Nurse called from where she was kneeling on the floor next to Nell. “She’s starting to rouse.”

Joanna and Cecil hurried over just in time to hear Nell say weakly.

“What happened?”

“Nell, don’t move,” nurse instructed as Nell tried to push herself up into a sitting position. “I’ve sent Miss Redmond for the stretcher, we will move her to the medical centre and send for the doctor. I don’t think she’s done any serious damage but at the least she is going to be somewhat bruised and aching for the next few days.”

In a matter of minutes Miss Redmond had returned with two of the younger mistresses and the stretcher. Nell was gently lifted on and borne away to the medical centre.

“Are you all right to go back to your form?” Cecil asked.

“I’ll be fine,” Joanna said, although she was pale and her eyes clearly showed that she had had a shock.

“The bell will be ringing in a few minutes, after that the girls can go up to their dormitories as usual and change. I am going along to the medical centre, why don’t you join me there when the bell goes?”

“Thank you,” Joanna replied gratefully as she was worried about her young cousin.

After Joanna had gone Cecil stood for a moment in the now silent hallway. Suddenly, she heard a muffled sob from above her. Looking up Cecil could just see through the banister a flash of the blue material that the girls wore as their uniform.

See how nice I am to you all!! two posts in one nights! Yep the Law Soc inspection went ok and i got to write this afternoon. Am off work tomorrow (job interview!) so don't expect too much as I will probably be too stressed!

“Who ever is up there, come down here at once,” she commanded and when the girl didn’t move Cecil ran quickly up the stairs.

Huddled at the top of the stairs, quietly sobbing was Jayne, Nell’s best friend.

“Now then Jayne, stand up and stop crying at once.” Cecil said firmly, but when the girl showed no signs of moving she sank to the floor next too her. Slipping her arm round the sobbing girls shoulders she continued gently, “Jayne, did you see what happened?”

“I’ve killed her!” Jayne eventually managed to say through her sobs.

“She’s not dead Jayne, she was knocked out but she came round before they took her to the medical centre.”

“Really, she’s alive?” Jayne’s tear filled eyes rose to meet those of her headmistress who nodded in response. “I didn’t kill her?”

“No, you didn’t.” As much as Cecil would have liked to have known then and there what the two girls had been doing she was aware that Jayne was far to upset and worried about her friend to say anything coherent. “Why don’t we go along to the medical centre and you can see for yourself?” She suggested.

As Jayne allowed her headmistress to coax her to her feet the bell rang for the end of preparation. From the floor below they could hear the opening and closing of doors and the footsteps of the girls as they made their way to their dormitories to change.

“Let’s go this way,” Cecil suggested as she lead her still tearful charge down one of the quiet corridors where access was only permitted by staff.

By the time they reached the medical centre Jayne’s tears had subsided to an occasional sniff. Cecil pushed open the big double doors at the entrance and walked into the deserted reception area, where nurse’s desk and the medicine cabinet containing prescription medication belonging to the girls was kept. Along each side of the room were two identical doors, those on the right belonging to the two treatment rooms and those on the left was the home of the school’s hospital dormitories. The whole area in Cecil’s own school days had been known as the san and was reigned over by Matey, the school’s beloved tyrant.

Voices could be heard from one of the treatment rooms and Cecil tapped gently on the door.

“Come in,” nurse called out and Cecil, leading Jayne by the hand pushed open the door. “Oh,” nurse exclaimed on seeing them, “I thought you were the doctor!”

“How is she?” Cecil asked.

“Rousing up fully now, it appears she has concussion but other than that I can’t find any other injuries.”

“She’s very lucky,” Cecil said grimly. “Can we see her for a moment?”

“Well, she’s very groggy,” nurse warned, “is it truly necessary?”

“I’m afraid it is, not for me but,” she indicated the tear stained face of the young girl with her.

“Oh, I see,” nurse moved to one side as she spoke. In the bed lay Nell, her face pale, dark circles developing around her eyes and a pained look on her face.

“Aunt Cecil,” she said weakly, “I..”

“Hush Nell, we will talk when your feeling better,” Cecil advised gently but with an edge to her voice which caused Nell to flush. “I just bought Jayne to see you were all right.”

“I’m fine Jay,” Nell managed a weak grin.

“Truly?” Jayne asked , her voice still full of tears. Nell nodded briefly in response and then held her hand to her head, tears forming in her eyes.

“I think we will leave you to it,” Cecil advised. Nurse nodded and then looking at Jayne asked,

“How are you feeling Jayne?”

“I, well,” Jayne stuttered.

“I would expect that your head is aching a bit after crying not to mention the fact that you have had a bit of a shock.”

“Do you want to keep her here overnight?” Cecil asked.

“I think it might be for the best, I’ve no one infectious here at the moment.”

“Very well,” Cecil replied, “I’ll leave you too it.”

Seeing the cabinet with the girls' prescription medicine in, reminded me that on page 6, Abi said

I assume this doesn't apply to reliever inhalers for asthma? (I had a 'discussion' with a parent the other day who didn't want us giving her 2 & 1/2 year old daughter her reliever until she was blue in the face & couldn't breathe. I pointed out everyone should have instant access to thier relievers & it is preschool policy that if a child asks for her or his inhaler, she or he is helped to take it.)

Lise's pre-school has one in a cabinet and she keeps one in her bag, same goes for epi-pens. My old school always held duplicate inhalers etc for us but we HAD to keep one on us. Thanks for the updates, Kate! Any chance of solving the minor mystery soon?

Thanks for the good wishes folks - not sure how the interview went but was in there for over an hour!! Re the medical cabinet - the girls would have their own inhalers, which need to be taken immediately in the case of an attack, however, the steroid inhalers would probably be under the care of the health centre, as would all pain killers, ezcema cream etc.

Still feeling light headed and a little nauseous Joanna made her way back to Upper IVa’s class room where the girls had kept their word and were working hard, in silence. All looked up at Joanna’s entrance and she smiled weakly.

“Nothing to worry about,” she reassured them. Pippa looked at her cousin carefully and raised her hand. “Yes Pippa?” Joanna asked.

“Please, what happened?” Pippa asked.

“Just one of the middles taking a bit of a tumble,” Joanna tried to keep her voice level and her tone light, Gabby whose ear was trained to listen to tone as well as content noted the waver at once.

“Please,” she said raising her hand, “they are all right aren’t they?”

“Yes Gabby,” Joanna said firmly, “Nurse has taken her along to the hospital ward and a doctor is coming down to check her over.” She gripped the desk as she spoke, the vision of Nell lying prone and still at the bottom of the stairs had floated back across her vision causing another wave of nausea to rise in her throat. Firmly she continued, “the bell will be ringing any second why don’t you start to put your things away, that is of course if you have all finished.”

Quietly the girls began to put away their books, and in Gabby’s case close down her computer. When the bell rang the last few were finished and silently they marched from their form rooms to their dormitories to change out of uniform.

Silence lasted until they were just about through the door.

“Jo looked like she was going to throw up!” Mel declared, “I wonder what really happened?”

“She wouldn’t have lied about it, but it was obviously worse than she was making out.” Abi agreed.

“She sounded like she was shaking,” Gabby advised.

“Shaking?”

“Yes, her voice was all over the place, like she was having difficulty controlling herself.”

“I wonder who it was?” Pippa asked as she ducked behind her curtains.

“Whoever it was, I wouldn’t like to be in their shoes, have you considered what time it was?” Abi continued, “if it was one of the middles, they should have been in prep!”

“Well, in that case I hope their injuries are bad enough to keep them out of Maynie’s way till she’s calmed down, remember the lecture she gave last year when the twins skipped prep?”

“Don’t I just,” Pippa said with a wince, “and they both got put on report for it.”

“Put on report for what?” Asked Lizzy who had walked through the door just in time to catch the end of the conversation.

“Skipping prep, apparently one of the middles was out of prep and had a fall. Didn’t you hear the scream?”

“Not a thing, but then again I did my prep in the computer lab. Oh well, we had better get changed.” Lizzy said bluntly as she disappeared into her cubicle.

There was no further talk just the rustling of material as the girls busied themselves with changing.

“I say,” Abi’s voice cut across the silence, “Nell and Jayne are late coming up, they aren’t going to have time to change, I wonder what’s keeping them?”

I was telling Matt about Gabby last night. He was very impressed with the 'far ranging subjects' tackled through the C&D. He also asked me to let you all know that I am the only weird one in our relationship and he has no problems with sharing a bedroom with a dog, guide or otherwise. Thanks Kate. Have just caught up with pages and pages of this drabble. I am really loving it. Hope Nell is Ok. My guess is she was trying to see what things are like for Gabby and Jayne was her guide dog. My great Grandmother was blind and I remember as a child going to the post office with my mum to collect her library books. They were huge Braille ones and fascinated me, she sometimes let me run my fingers over them. She lived with my grandparents and her hearing was very acute no use using the 'It wasn't me' excuse when she was in the house. Hope you get good news about the job Kate.

“Oh no!” Pippa gasped and Gabby heard foot steps running to the door from the direction of not only Pippa’s cubicle but from Lizzy’s as well. As she pulled her sweater over her head she heard the door open and slam shut.

“What on earth?” Mel exclaimed as all four remaining girls appeared simultaneously from their cublicles.

“I can guess,” Abi said grimly, “Odds on that it was Nell who skipped prep.”

“No wonder Jo looked so upset!” Mel replied, “she lives with Nell and her family during the holidays whilst her dad’s working.”

“Even if it is Nell, won’t Lizzy and Pippa get into trouble for racing off like that?” Rosemary asked shyly from the corner of the room.

“Probably not much trouble, after all they are Nell’s cousin’s too,” Mel said with a shrug, “we had better get ourselves sorted though, no one will love us if were late for Abendessen.”

“Too true,” Abi replied with a rueful laugh, with which the others joined in, the whole dormitory had been late for Abendessen last week when they had all gone out into the gardens with Polo and decided to take the long way back thinking they had enough time to make it to the dining room before the bell went. Needless to state they hadn’t and the eight of them had to walk through the silent dining room to apologise to their headmistress before taking their seats.

“How about if Abi and I go to the bathrooms now and when we come back, you two can go whilst we finish up in here,” Mel suggested.

Before anyone could answer Mel had grabbed her wash bag and headed for the door swiftly followed by Abi. Gabby heard Rosemary turn on her heel and walk back to her own cubicle, leaving Gabby with nothing to do but to return to her own domains and check that all was in order.

As Gabby carried her dirty uniform to the hamper at the doorway she heard the bang of something hitting the floor followed by the sound of smashing glass. Turning on her heel she raced to the other end of the dormitory.

“Rosemary,” she called as she reached that young lady’s cubicle. “Are you all right?”

“I’m, um,” Rosemary replied distantly.

“Can I come in?” Gabby was concerned that Rosemary had not given a usual snapped response.

“No, there is glass all over the floor, you might hurt yourself.”

“Are you all right?” Gabby repeated.

“My hands bleeding, and I think I have a piece of glass in my leg.” Rosemary’s voice was beginning to shake.

“I’m coming in,” Gabby said with a hint of determination in her voice, “you will have to guide me past the glass.”

“Okay,” Rosemary replied. As Gabby walked through the curtain Polo went to go with her.

“No!” gasped Rosemary. “Stop, Polo can’t come in, he might cut his pads!”

Gabby put her hands down onto Polo’s collar and commanded him to stay, she reinforced the command using the time it took to mask her surprise that Rosemary of all people would think of Polo’s safety, or that she knew the correct term for the soft underside of the paws.

Walking forward carefully Rosemary guided Gabby to the bed where she was sitting.

“Whereabouts on your hand are you cut?” Gabby asked pulling a wad of tissue from her jeans pocket.

“Between my thumb and first finger, I sliced it trying to pick up one of the big pieces of glass.”

“Is there any glass in the cut? How much is it bleeding now?”

“There’s no glass, it’s still bleeding, I can’t tell how much because my hands a mess.”

“Can you bend your thumb and first finger?”

“Yes,” Rosemary winced as she moved her fingers, “that’s made it bleed more,” she added.

“Ok, take these tissues and put them over the cut, then close your fist around the tissues.” Gabby passed the tissues but before letting go asked again, “your sure there is no glass in the cut?”

“Positive,” Rosemary replied taking the tissues and doing as she was instructed.

“What about your leg?” Gabby asked.

“There are some small cuts on my shin, and a piece of glass in one, it flew up when the glass smashed and hit me.”

“Okay, is it bleeding?”

“It seems to have stopped, do you think I should pull the glass out.”

Reading this episode makes me wonder if Rosemary has a blind relative or friend who she has left behind when she came to the Chalet School, and if her initial hostility to Gabby and Polo stems from an attempt to mask her real feelings - or even from an unspoken, even unacknowledged, resentment that this other person isn't at the school with her. Certainly this present interchange, and her concern lest Polo cut his pads on the broken glass suggests that she actually has previous experience of dealing with a blind person - her directions to Gabby were exceptionally clear.

Maybe Rosemary has a sister who is blind, and her paren'ts wouldn't let her come to school, and then she got there and found Gabby there? *hazards a wild guess*

Thanks Kate. Nice to see the two getting on well together. Wonder if Rosemary has left a blind brother or sister and if this is also why she cries (if it is her) every night?

I was also wondering if she had a blind sibling (twin, prehaps?) who she has left behind with the beloved guide dog.

All these guesses! all will be revealed eventually (when I've decided what on earth is actually happening and when i've written it!) In the meantime.......

“No!” Gabby exclaimed immediately, “leave it in and let nurse take it out. Do you think you can walk to the medical centre?”

“Yes,” Rosemary said but her tone indicated she wasn’t sure.

“I’ll come with you if you want,” Gabby suggested, not entirely sure how this would go down.

“Thank you,” Rosemary said simply but Gabby could hear a touch of embarrassment in her voice, though no resentment.

“Shall we go?”

“What about this glass? I can’t just leave it on the floor, what if one of the others walks on it?”

“Ok, guide me back through and I’ll get the dust pan and brush.”

Rosemary carefully guided Gabby back through the cubicle avoiding the broken glass, her tone was very subdued and Gabby guessed that she was feeling uncomfortable at being helped by a blind person. ‘Well it’s me or no one’ Gabby thought to herself as she made her way to the small cupboard at the end of the dormitory which housed basic cleaning materials that the girls used on a daily basis. Returning with the dustpan Rosemary guided her again through the cubicle and then whilst she swept up the fragments of broken glass.

“Is that all of it?” She asked standing up with the pan in her hand.

“I can’t see anymore, what are you going to do with it? You can’t put it in the bin, whoever empties it might get cut.”

“Your right, lets just leave it on the dresser for now, we can tell nurse and she can arrange for someone to collect it I expect.”

The two girls, accompanied by Polo made there way through the corridors toward the medical centre, around them they could hear the last minute preparations of the girls changing for Abendessen. The bell for Abendessen sounded as they reach the door to the medical centre and Rosemary used her uninjured hand to knock.

Well seeing as Vikki asked so nicely!

“Come in,” Gabby recognised the school nurse’s voice. Rosemary opened the door and they walked through.

“Please,” Rosemary began, her voice again sounding shaky to Gabby’s ear. “I seem to have hurt myself.”

“So I see,” Nurse replied calmly. “Gabby you stay here whilst I see to Rosemary’s wounds.” With that Gabby heard Nurse whisk Rosemary across the room and a door shut behind them.

Gabby had never been in the school’s health centre before and didn’t dare move from where she was, despite the fact she had Polo with her. On the edge of her hearing she could just make out what sounded like a conversation going on in the direction Rosemary and Nurse had gone. The rest of the room felt empty. The bell for Abendessen had come and gone and Gabby was beginning to feel hungry, would she miss tea altogether? What about Polo’s tea, and his walk for that matter?

Eventually the door opened again and Gabby heard footsteps walking towards her.

“All fixed.” Nurse said brightly. “You did the right thing Gabby, leaving that glass in Rosie’s leg, well done.”

“Thank you,” Gabby muttered, stunned that Rosemary was allowing nurse to call her by a shortened name, when the rest of the form had suggested it they had been told point blank that her name remained in full.

“Now,” Nurse continued, “You’ve missed your supper, so why don’t I send for some to be brought up here. I’ve only two others in the hospital, neither are infectious, so the four of you can eat together in the patients room.”

She ushered the two girls away from the door through which they had entered the health centre and across the room. Polo guided her through what felt like another room and eventually came to a halt. She knew she was standing in a patch of evening sunshine as she could feel the warmth on her cheeks.

“Sit down here, I’ll go and fetch you something to eat.”

“What about Polo?” Gabby asked before Nurse could rush away.

“I’ll ask for his supper to be sent up to.” Gabby could hear the smile in Nurse’s voice. When she had gone Gabby said quietly to Rosemary who she could feel by her side.

“Can you direct me to a chair?”

“Yes,” Rosemary sounded startled and Gabby’s hackles rose.

“I would do it myself but I can’t see remember.”

“I, um…” Rosemary stuttered before adding in an extremely subdued and tearful sounding voice. “I know.” Gabby felt Rosemary’s hand on her elbow and she followed the gentle lead given across the room. “If you put your free hand out you will feel the back of the chair in front of you.”

“Thank you,” Gabby sat as she spoke, “I don’t like being in new places when I don’t like the lay out,” she explained.

“It’s ok,” again Rosemary’s voice sounded subdued.

The pair sat in silence until Gabby heard footsteps approaching, not one set but two, lighter than nurses.

Glad Gabby's helping Rosemary. On the topic of dogs in bedrooms. My father in law brought their dog Carly here yesterday. I don't mind her at all but I'm not really a dog person. Anyway, my husband decided to be naughty and have her up on the bed. I was very annoyed - there were dog hairs everywhere. This is one of the reasons I don't want a dog, nice as Carly (and Polo) are!

“Hello! What are you two doing here?” Gabby recognised the voice as Nell’s immediately, despite the fact that her words were very slightly slurred.

“We missed supper because I hurt my hand,” Rosemary explained holding up her bandaged hand.

“So your having supper with us?” Jayne’s usually quiet voice was more subdued than usual.

“Yes, anyway, what are you two doing here?” Gabby asked. She was surprised that the normally extremely talkative Nell didn’t reply at once. Sensing something was wrong Gabby continued, “when you didn’t show up after prep Liz and Pippa went haring off somewhere!”

Nell muttered something that even Gabby with her exceptional hearing couldn’t make out and the four girls fell silent. The silence wasn’t exactly uncomfortable but it was putting Gabby on edge, eventually she spoke again.

“Did you hear the scream during prep?” She asked. No one replied immediately but then, in a very small voice, which held almost nothing of her usual tones, Nell whispered.

“That was me!”

“You!” Rosemary exclaimed loudly.

“What happened?” Gabby asked.

“I fell,” Nell said shortly, had Gabby been able to see she would have noted that Nell had flushed deeply and hung her head.

“Are you hurt badly?” Rosemary asked noting the younger girl’s discomfort.

“Not really,” Nell’s tone was flat.

“She has concussion,” Jayne interrupted, “other than that nurse says she’s very lucky!”

“Lucky? Why how far did you fall?”

“Down some stairs,” Nell muttered.

At that point all conversation ceased as Nurse, along with one of the domestic staff, appeared carrying trays containing their supper. The bowls of thick vegetable soup accompanied by crusty wholemeal bread were welcome and the four ate quickly. Fresh fruit followed and once they had all helped themselves to the fruit of their choice Gabby sat back in her chair and asked.

“So what were you doing to fall down the stairs?”

So nice to see that Lesley's patience only extends as much as everyone elses! Anyway, enjoy!

“I, well….” Nell stuttered before grinding to a halt

“We wanted to know what it was like,” Jayne said quietly.

“What what was like?” Rosemary asked raising her eyebrow as she spoke.

“Being blind,” Nell muttered so quietly that the others could barely hear her.

“How? Why?” Gabby asked, shocked by this admission as Nell had asked more questions than any of the others about her disability.

Nell didn’t respond, in truth she was too embarrassed to tell Gabby what she had been doing. For the first time in her life, the younger girl had discovered someone she could admire and respect and to have to explain to that person what she had been doing was too much for her at that moment.

“I could hazard a guess,” Rosemary said suddenly. “Were you trying to find out by one of you pretending to be blind whilst the other directed you?”

“Yes,” Nell muttered miserably.

“What!” Gabby was incredulous at this admission, “Why on earth?” Again Nell didn’t respond, nor did Jayne and it was left to Rosemary to fill in the uncomfortable silence by trying to bring the discussion to a close.

“You are okay though, not hurt or anything, so no harm done.”

Gabby had lapsed into silence, considering carefully what Nell had been trying to do. This was something of a new experience for her, although she knew people were curious of her blindness she never once suspected that anyone would willingly try to be blind, particularly not just to see what it was like.

The sound of footsteps announced the arrival of nurse to remove their supper trays.

“Now then, Rosie and Gabby, you run along and join the rest of your form. Nell, Jayne, you two are staying here for tonight, Miss Maynard has asked to see you both directly after breakfast tomorrow morning.”

Rosemary and Gabby were hurried from the health centre back to their form leaving the two younger girls to reflect on their actions and the forthcoming interview with the head.

The corridors were deserted as the two girls made their way back to their common room, where the rest of their form would be relaxing. As they approached the door, Gabby could hear the chatter of the girls over the stereo that pumped out music in the background. Before they could enter the room Gabby grabbed at Rosemary’s arm.

“How did you know?” she whispered, “about what Nell had been doing?”

“I, well, just guessed.” Rosemary said quickly, though from speed of her reply and the tone of her voice Gabby didn’t believe that she was being completely honest. Before either girl could say anything further Rosemary pushed the door of the common room open and Gabby’s friends swooped down on her, asking questions about what had happened.

Rosemary watched as Gabby was swept away to one of the big sofas with the others, with a sigh she turned to the book case at the side of the door and appeared to be studying the titles with interest. In fact, she was trying to overcome the sudden feeling of complete loneliness and to fight back the tears that were forming in her eyes.

#371:  Author: KatarzynaLocation: Preston, Lancashire PostPosted: Wed Feb 16, 2005 9:01 pm

Just a short bit tonight! Really must try to write more tomorrow - work is such a nuisance, i would get on much faster if I didn't have to keep swapping screens back to real work and talking to clients!!

There were several people in the school who did not sleep well that night, in Hyacinth dormitory Gabby again heard the sound of muffled crying, she knew that the sound was coming from within the dormitory and with Jayne’s absence she was now pretty certain which cubicle it was coming from. Even when the crying ceased Gabby lay awake thinking to herself how she could help.

In the dormitory attached to the health centre neither Jayne nor Nell slept well. Jayne was troubled about the forthcoming interview with the head, knowing that she had committed a grave offence by skipping preparation. As for Nell, her thoughts were mainly with Gabby, she both liked and admired the older girl and was acutely aware that her own curiosity had perhaps embarrassed and hurt her feelings. For some reason, which she could not work out, this made her feel more anxious and upset than the thought of the impending interview with the head.

In the headgirl’s bedroom, which also doubled as a private study, Joanna was having difficulty in sleeping. Each time she closed her eyes she saw vividly her younger cousin lying unconscious at the bottom of the stairs. A long time later exhaustion finally overcame her and she fell asleep, though her dreams still contained the images that haunted her when awake.

Cecil had taken leave of the rest of the staff early that night and made her way to her own domains. She never liked having to scold any of the girls for their misdeeds and it was always worse when the girl in trouble was a member of her own family. In the solitude of her own quarters she prayed for guidance, for the best way to deal with her young niece, for the ability to act fairly and to be able to lead her charges by example of word and deed.

a bit more.......

The next morning dawned bright and clear, though the temperature had fallen below freezing over night and a thick frost carpeted the landscape. Gabby could feel the weak winter sunlight through the glass window of her cubicle as soon as she woke, despite the wooden blinds.

“Oh good, with any luck we will get out today,” she said to Polo who stood next to her bed with his muzzle resting on the duvet. Absently she scratched the white fur on the top of his head and stroked the soft leathers of his ears. She lay thinking until the rising bell sounded and around her she could hear the rest of the dormitory rousing.

She was still laying in bed when she heard Mel and Abi scamper off for their showers, slamming the door behind them. Five weeks into term she knew that mornings were something of a race against the clock and so she swung her legs out of bed, her feet finding the fleece lined slippers tucked away under the bed. Quickly she pulled back the duvet and began sorting out her wash bag, she and Rosemary were next in the showers and she had to be ready to run as soon as the first two came back.

When Mel and Abi returned, Gabby snatched up her towel, washbag and Polo’s harness. Meeting Rosemary at the door the pair made their way to the bathrooms, as Gabby left Polo outside the door of her cubicle she turned to Rosemary and whispered,

“Partner me if we get to go on a walk today?”

“Okay,” Rosemary’s voice betrayed her surprise at Gabby’s request, with a grin Gabby turned into the cubicle and shut the door behind her. Rosemary stood staring at the closed door for almost a minute before she came to her senses and dashed into her own cubicle.

The bell for private prayers sounded as Gabby was pulling her cardigan on and in the five minutes of silence that followed she thought long and hard about the plans she had made the night before. As the bell sounded for breakfast she sent up a silent request for help before pushing her feet into her house shoes and joining the back of the queue of girls waiting for her before marching down to the dining room.

“Sorry,” she said as she fell into place at the end of the line, trying to smooth down her thick dark hair which she hadn’t had time to brush properly. Lizzy opened the door and led the way to the dining room where the first meal of the day was already laid out for them. The rest of the dormitories filed in with the girls taking their places at their respective form tables. Once all were seated Miss Maynard, who stood at her place at the staff table said the brief grace with which they started their meals.

The girls made short work of the food and once nearly all were finished Miss Maynard rang the small bell which stood next to her plate. The girls turned to face her whilst the mornings notices were read out.

“Good morning girls,” she began. “Firstly I have good news, as the weather has finally brightened up and we can hope for at least a short period without rain, this morning’s lessons have been postponed. Instead you will go out for a couple of hours, your form mistresses will give the details of which forms are going together and the supervising mistresses and prefects during registration. After prayers you will go and change into your walking clothes and then reassemble in your form rooms for registration. Please don’t forget your waterproofs, gloves and hats.”

Cecil paused to survey the excited faces below her, whilst the weather was generally very good throughout most of the year in this part of Switzerland the autumn always proved to be the most difficult of terms weather wise as the summer gave way to winter via around four weeks of wet and miserable days.

“This afternoon lessons will be held as usual, however, immediately after Kaffe the middle and senior school choirs will assemble in the hall and a final selection will be made of the twenty four girls who will represent us at the carol concert at the end of term. Those seniors and middles not in the choirs will got to the gym where Miss Redmond has arranged for a series of races and other events.” Cecil smiled down at the two long tables where the school’s youngest members sat. “The juniors will go swimming this afternoon, I understand that your mistresses have arranged for you to use the some of the inflatable equipment.” Some of the juniors started clapping at this announcement, Cecil let them have their way for a moment and then held up her hand for silence.

“Finally, I would warn you that any bad behaviour will lead the staff to consider whether or not they will allow lessons to be cancelled in favour of time out of school on future occasions.” Several of the girls, whose behaviour was sometimes less than the standard expected received stern glares from their classmates at this prediction.

“In a moment I will say grace, after which you will all go to morning prayers. Will Jayne Taylor and Helena Maynard please attend my office immediately after prayers.” Both girls looked extremely embarrassed at having been singled out in this way, Jayne was fighting a loosing battle with her tears and Nell hung her head not wishing to look anyone in they eye, least of all her aunt or any of her cousins.

Grace was spoken and the girls hurried to put away their dirty crockery before heading for prayers, following which most of the school did as directed by their head. As the rest of their form headed towards their dormitories to change Nell and Jayne walked reluctantly towards their headmistresses study, most of their class mates cast sympathetic glances after them. Nell, who had a somewhat dramatic turn of phrase, later described the walk to the study as feeling like she was walking to the gallows.

well you did ask for a study scene ..................

The door to the small domain of the school’s secretary was open when the arrived and they could see Miss Richards sorting through the large pile of post which had just been delivered.

“Yes girls?” She asked as they stood in the doorway.

“Please,” Nell murmured, “Miss Maynard is expecting us.”

“Of course, take a seat,” the secretary pointed to the wooden chairs against the wall. She then returned to her desk and pressed the intercom button.

“Yes?” Miss Maynard’s voice sounded through the machine.

“The girls you sent for are here.”

“Tell them to come through.” The intercom buzzed off as she finished speaking.

“Go through girls,” Miss Richards said with a brief smile at the two unhappy girls before her. Nell knocked timidly on the door and her aunt called out for them to enter. They pushed the door open and walked through, forgetting to shut it behind them. Miss Richards however had seen this before an quickly took steps to close it.

Jayne and Nell virtually shuffled across the carpet until they were standing in front of the large mahogany desk which stood across the French windows, behind it sat Cecil, looking every inch the headmistress.

“Now then,” she began, “I would like an explanation as to your conduct last night when you should have been attending to your preparation.”

The two girls looked at their headmistress, then briefly at each other before hanging their heads and gazing directly at their own shoes. Neither said a word. Cecil waited patiently, studying the girls as they stood in front of her. Eventually Nell raised her eyes to meet her aunts.

“I, well, we, erm,” was all she could manage before hanging her head once more.

After a further minute or so of silence Jayne gave a little gulp and said quietly.

“We were trying to see what it was like to be blind.”

“Pardon?” Cecil asked completely taken aback by this statement.

“We, well, Gabby had told us but we wanted to see for ourselves.” Now she had started talking Jayne felt she should carry on, her friend’s attention still seemed fixated on her own feet. “We were taking it in turns to be blind-folded, the other one of us would act as guide dog. Whilst we were walking along the top corridor Nell got too close to the edge and fell.”

Jayne had turned white again as she said this remembering the horror of watching her best friend fall down the stairs.

“Your curiosity is perhaps understandable, however, I would like an explanation as to why you chose to carry out your experiment during a time you know full well to be designated to preparation.”

“Please,” Jayne continued, “we thought it would be best.”

“Best for who? For what?”

“We…..” Jayne trailed off not really able to find an explanation.

“Was this escapade your idea?” Cecil asked Jayne, being almost completely certain that the brains behind the experiment had been her so far silent niece. When Jayne didn’t respond Cecil turned to Nell.

Oh! I think I know, they wanted to make sure Gabby didn't see them and feel hurt.

Plus, with everyone else in prep they wouldn't have to avoid other girls or explain what they were doing. Thanks Kate Liz

I've finally caught up on this one. Thanks, Kate! Trying to see what it's like to be blind sounds perfectly reasonable to me. In fact, at one point we were encouraged to do so. I could get about six steps along the sidewalk before going off the edge. Confused *wouldn't recommend trying at the top of a stairwell*

Almost like one of those Trust Games they make you play on corporate bonding days. Hope Cecil understands why they did it!

“Well Helena? Do you wish to provide an explanation as to why you chose to absent yourself from preparation?”

“I, well, it just seemed like the best time to try,” Nell said weakly, she hated it when people used her full name, mainly because it was usually when she was in trouble.

“The best time to try?” Cecil asked raising her eyebrow.

“Yes,” Nell drew her eyes up to meet her aunts, “it was quiet, I didn’t want Ga..anyone to know.”

“Let me get this straight, you decided that instead of going to preparation with the rest of your form you went to try and find out what it was like to be blind by using a scarf as a blindfold. You deliberately chose to miss preparation because you didn’t want anyone to know what you were doing?”

“Erm, well, yes,” Nell stuttered.

“Tell me,” Cecil sat back in her chair, “how did you get out of preparation?” Jayne studied the floor with increased intensity and it was left to Nell to try and answer.

“We never went,” she whispered eventually.

“How did you accomplish that?” Cecil’s voice cracked like a whip and her young niece flushed deeply.

“I well, hinted, perhaps, that I maybe had a headache,” Nell’s voice shook as she made this admission.

“What about you Jayne?” Cecil said icily.

“I didn’t say anything, I just didn’t go to preparation.” Jayne’s voice was a whisper.

“So let me get this straight, you lied to your classmates, misleading them into believing you were sick so that when you didn’t turn up it would be assumed that you had gone to the health centre and Jayne had gone with you?”

Helena winced visibly at this bald statement of fact.

“Well?” Cecil’s demanded, “is that a true and accurate version of events?”

“Yes,” Nell said miserably, Jayne was unable to speak as Cecil’s final words had reduced her to tears, which she tried, not very successfully to hide.

Cecil sat watching the two girls for an uncomfortable couple of minutes, during which Nell wished that the floor would open up and swallow her. Eventually Cecil spoke again.

“I am deeply, deeply disappointed in the pair of you.” She sighed as she spoke, “I had assumed that at having been at the school for the last three years the pair of you would have developed at least some understanding of what level of conduct we expect of our girls. I fear that we may have made a grave mistake promoting you to the middle school, your actions have not been worthy of the youngest of juniors.”

Jayne was sobbing openly by the time, tears pouring down her face. Nell on the other hand was still fighting hard to prevent a similar outburst.

“Besides your flagrant disregard for rules, you have upset several people by your foolish behaviour,” Cecil continued. “I must discuss this matter with your form and house mistresses. In the meantime however, as neither of you can be trusted, I will arrange for you to be supervised at all times by either a mistress or prefect.”

The girls gasped at this last statement, even the youngest of juniors could expect a certain amount of freedom from the authorities, it was one of the foundation stones of the school, that the girls were trusted.

“Please wait in Miss Richards’ office until someone comes for you,” Cecil said coldly, “and wait in silence.”

The two girls shuffled out of the room not daring to look at their headmistress. When the door was firmly shut Cecil slumped backwards into her chair with a sigh, for several minutes she sat there in silence gathering her thoughts. Eventually she sat up-right and picked up the internal phone and dialled the three digit extension to the staffroom where she was sure that there would be at least a couple of mistresses that hadn’t gone out with the girls.

Immediate supervision for the two girls was arranged, with them being sent to opposite ends of the school, Nell under the supervision of the senior science mistress, Miss Ferdinand, to the laboratories and Jayne, under the supervision of Mlle Mercier in the languages department. The whole school was fairly silent as the girls were still out enjoying the fresh air and so Cecil slipped on her coat and left her office via the French windows, making her way to the sanctuary offered by her old family home and coffee with her mother and sister Len.
