There was a gentle knock on the door.

"Come in," Miss Annersley called, though her voice lacked some of its usual dignity.

"You asked to see me Miss Annersley?" came the worried voice.

"Yes, please do sit down," Miss Annersley gestured towards the comfy chair by her desk. Taking the girl's hand in her own she said:
"I'm afraid that we have received the sad news that we all anticipated."

The girl froze. "You mean...?" she said hesitantly.

Miss Annersley nodded slowly. "Yes, Mrs Linton is no longer with us. I know that you never expected it to be so soon and these are not desired circumstances, but as Gillian will no longer be at school I hope you will be willing to take up your position as Head Girl."

Hilary Burn gulped. "Yes, Miss Annersley," she said extending her hand. "I will gladly accept. But poor Gillian and Joyce!"

"All that we can do now is pray for them, Hilary," was the quiet response.

"Yes Miss Annersley, I will do...and thank you," Hilary replied, with which she quietly left the room quietly in order to take on her new role as Head Girl of the Chalet School.

What a shock for Hilary - even though she knew it had to come, it must have been very hard for her to get both pieces of news at once.

That was lovely, Laura. I always thought that Hilary was a good choice to take over from Gillian.

It's set sometime between Gillian, where Gillian Linton is head girl, and Exile where Hilary is head girl. I think I remember reading somewhere that Gillian leaves her head girlship early (one of the missing books!) so Hilary was the obvious replacement!
