Hope you have a lovely christmas JennyWren!

And just thought you might want to know this tory is actually true just changed slightly!

It was Christmas eve in the Maynard home, the decorations were up, presents wrapped and even Anna the faithful maid had finished cooking. All the Maynard’s had returned home for the Christmas festivities except Len, who along with her husband Reg and her two children Lily and Thomas, would be around tomorrow.

Everyone was relaxing in the saal the adults with mulled wine, the children with lemonade when Felicity asked:

Mother, you said you’d tell us the story about the soldiers and why we made all that extra presents for them this year.’

‘So I did’ Joey replied ‘Everyone settle down’

And she began:

‘Last month I was in West London attending a book conference if you remember. While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer. I turned around and witnessed a great act of patriotism.

Moving through the terminal was a group of soldiers in uniform, as they headed to the gate almost everyone came to their feet and cheered.

When I saw the 30-40 soldiers being applauded and cheered, it hit me. I’m not alone, i’m not the only red blooded Britain who still loves this country and supports our troops and their families. I stopped and joined in clapping for the young unsung heroes who put their lives on the line daily for us so we can go to school and work and enjoy our home without fear or reprisal.

When i thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our service men and women a young girl of about 6 or 7 years old ran up to one of the soldiers. He knelt down and said ‘Hi’ the little girl then asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her. The young soldier who looked about 22 said he would try and what did she want to give her daddy.

Suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of the soldier and gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek. The mother of the little girl, who said her daughter’s name was Courtney told the young soldier that her husband was a corporal and had been in Afghanistan for the last 5 months.

As the mum was explaining how much her daughter missed her father the young soldier began to cry. When the mum was finished explaining the situation all the soldiers huddled together for a brief second. Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military looking walkie talkie. They started playing with the device and talking backwards and forwards on it. After about 10-15 seconds of this the young soldier walked back over to Courtney bent down and said to her: ‘I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you’ He then hugged the little girl and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

He finished by saying: ‘your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon and although he won’t be home for Christmas he will be thinking about you’ The mum at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet he saluted Courtney and her mum.
I was standing no more than 6 feet away as this entire event unfolded. As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people resumed their applause. As I stood their applauding I looked around, there were very few dry eyes including my own.
That young soldier in one last act turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.

And so’ concluded Joey ‘It made me realise we often forget the unsung heroes and I felt we could show them how much we appreciate them as they won’t be with their families at this time’

‘I think that was perfect mama’ Felicity said wiping a tear from her eye

And everyone agreed!

That was a beautiful story - I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, too. Thank you, Santa for this timely reminder of those who may be marking this season far from family.

I was getting quite tearful this morning when local radio were playing messages from the troops in Afghanistan, who will be spending Christmas a long way from their homes and families. Thank you, Santa.

Thank you. The local TV stations had sent reports out to Afghanistan and film men opening their children's presents and then let children see the moment.
