Post subject:  Twelve Baubles for Christmas

I know it was briefly mentioned in COT, but Liz had intended to write something similar into The Last, but well as it's getting posted here, you can guess that's not particularly going to happen. therefore we leave this one as a single poem. Each of the three of us she gave particular baubles to, some of you will know who each of us is, but if not, well it's the sentiment that counts. The authors of this are in fact all four of us...a collabaration if you like!!!!

Enjoy

Liz, Claire, Paul and Al.

Twelve Baubles for Christmas

Tonight we placed twelve Baubles on the Christmas tree,
Each one contained a precious, frozen in time, memory,
For all those around me to remember the laughter and love
Of all those times shared, even once I am looking down from above.

The first bauble was solely for me, my love of music to be seen,
A glass ball in which hung a treble clef, in bright golden gleam,
When asked what song this small musical symbol may represent,
My reply to my loved ones was that of “Every song I sung, I meant’.

The second ball had a read and white rose, for the love of my life,
Those two roses showing our union, from our bouquets, my wife,
Words cannot be expressed how much I will love her for all time,
That I’ll be waiting at the gates for where at last she will climb.

The third bauble for the best nurse and friend that could possibly be,
A Clover and Thistle entwined showing my trust and faith in thee,
Always there for me and my wife, a nurse, comforter, friend
Telling me as it is, telling me to “Hush” right until the very end.

The fourth ball, contained a tower, specifically that of Blackpool,
A day out by the seaside, for all, but him and I pose by a lit jewel,
A day of laughter, sweets and of course the beach, on each face a smile,
The lasting thoughts, being of fooling around and that night in style!

The fifth, twofold, a difficult one for my wife, angels with halos entwine,
The second part within a box, is found an eternity ring that did so shine,
Tears have been shed, many times and there may well be many more,
However, soon, that sun will shine, and her heart will no longer be sore.

The Sixth, again there’s two here, A set of necklaces reading ‘Best Friends’,
For one who could never be considered anything but a God-send,
His second part, again in a box, not a necklace, but a Claddagh ring,
A sign of my friendship, my love, my thanks to him in a ring I bring.

Number seven, for his gent, our love of Disney to be shown to all,
Through a miniature statue of Cinderella’s castle, hung in this ball,
This ball also has a second part to this gift, as like for the rest,
His favourite Disney scene, in statue form, he thinks is the best.

Ball Eight, memories from us four and many trips abroad and away,
Most particularly of this recently past, trip to Lourdes and it’s stay,
The most precious memories, extra time to appreciate one another,
Time to spend with each other, act as normal; sisters and brothers.

Nine, Ten and Eleven, left empty to be filled by the those others around,
Their memories to hang alongside mine, in glass and gold to be crowned,
Three people who mean so much, from whom I will soon fly far away,
However, through these last memories, I will not be forgotten, I pray.

Finally Twelve, until I am gone it isn’t to be hung upon the Christmas tree,
A crystal, sparkling, angel carrying a golden child, my own personal memory,
I am going to those that I love and miss so much, I would like to be able to stay,
However, my Father calls me to His beautiful garden to join the Child to play.

What a beautiful collection of memories you have built with those baubles, Lizziearnett :) - special things for the others to treasure and remember you each time they look at them. I've no doubt that each of them will build other special memories into the three remaining to be filled. You are all amazing and very brave people, as well as being extremely generous in allowing the rest of us to share in these very special times. Thank you so much for giving us this gift.

Oh Liz! I am here in tears! Life is a journey, this reminded me of the start of the poem by Canon Henry Scott-Holland: it meant a lot to me when my husband died -

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still!

Life does not end - it just gos into the next room until those left behind join the one gone before!

May the beauty of these memories, enclosed in baubles, and their poem, last until you all meet again where there is just God's timeless presence.

Thank you all for sharing with us.

Not being by nature one who easily displays her deepest emotions, I have to confess that very little that is posted on this board moves me to outward tears. But this poem did.

May God bless and keep each one of you until you meet again.

Oh, Liz, I can't see through my tears. But I shall picture you there, playing and laughing and loving - and waiting faithfully for those you love to join you.

You are leaving your loved ones so many memories and a beautiful legacy. I think you're also leaving to some of us on here a beautiful legacy - and teaching us that death is really not something to be feared at all.

Thank you for posting this. It's simply beautiful. I too had tears in my eyes by the end (and am hastily trying to mop up as I'm currently in my university library!)
