First proper drabble-Letters being just a diversion. Hope you like it and can forgive any grammatical errors.

The handful of staff stopped waving as the three coaches of gentian clad girls turned the corner and disappeared.
‘Well, that’s it.’
‘Don’t look so woebegone, you’ll see most of them next term.’
‘But not here! I’m really going to miss the Platz’
Nancy opened her mouth to reply but was interrupted,
‘What time do the rest of you leave?’
Nancy grinned, ‘After Mittagessen but Kathie and I are only going as far as Interlaken so if you’ll invite us we’ll come over for tea if you like. Around 14?’
‘Okey doke. I’ll see you then,’ and Jo wandered off leaving the other two to follow the rest of the remaining staff while bickering mildly.
Jo ambled from the path and headed to the Memorial Garden. Two rows of trees, which had only just grown to meet overhead, sheltered a small area that resembled a sort of outdoor chapel. Joey leaned back on the bench dedicated to the memory of Luigia di Ferrara and gazed at the stone, behind which was a trellis covered with climbing plants. The sun shone through this, lighting the multi-coloured blooms like a natural stained glass window while their scent diffused the air. Joey’s shoulders dropped as she kicked off her sandals – this was the place that she would miss the most. Since its inauguration she had sat here every day the weather permitted; she would read the names inscribed on the stone and remember. These people had been friends and she spent time recalling their kindness, generosity and the funnier moments of their lives.
‘Excuse me Miss.’
Joey jumped and quickly scrabbled for her shoes. She’d been far away with Herr Laubach throwing all her art stuff at her after she’d purposely made him lose his rag, literally if you included the mopping up rag he’d chucked, and hadn’t heard the men approach.
‘Sorry miss. We’ve come to move the stone.’
‘Of course. Just give me a moment.’ She scuttled forward and placed a single rose in front of the memorial, ran her fingers over the symbol of edelweiss, briar rose and gentian and straightened up brushing her hair back from her face. She smiled at the waiting men and then strolled over to Freudesheim, ready to share morning coffee with her husband.

‘Where is she?’ Len Entwhistle stood by the window, tapping her foot, ‘We should be leaving in five minutes.’
Reg sighed, he might have known, ‘then she’s still got five minutes to get here.’
‘But I like to be prepared. I hate late starts.’
‘Look, Len, you’ve given yourself more than enough time to catch the five o’clock ferry so calm down.’ He was beginning to regret taking time off to come and say good-bye; he had some very interesting cases at the hospital. ‘Look, why don’t you come and say good-bye properly. We’ve discussed what is happening to the kids, you’ve organised my living arrangements, just relax and come and kiss me.’ Len suddenly grinned and sashayed over to her husband but just as his arms reached for her a car was heard stopping outside.
‘It’s her at last. Bye Reg. See you in about six weeks.’ And she was gone leaving the trailing scent of her favourite perfume.

Kathie and Nancy stepped through the French window as Joey entered carrying the tea-pot.
‘Good timing.’
Nancy looked at the dainty meal set out on the low table and said, ‘Wow! Anna’s done us proud.’
Joey giggled, ‘Actually I did most of it. All of it really, apart from the biscuits- Anna still won’t share that recipe.’ Nancy stopped still but recovered quickly to flap at Kathie as she murmured something about not wanting to be poisoned.
Joey ignored them and asked calmly about their plans for the future.
‘As you well know, I’m retiring. It’s a bit early but I couldn’t face becoming a rank and file teacher again after being a head. And Glendower House, although in essence the same school, has built up its own traditions and practices which would make it very tricky to adapt as a co-head. I’m a creature of habit and I’ll enjoy having lots of free time. No more troublesome middles,’ she added with a laugh.
‘I’m teaching though. We’ve bought a cottage about five miles from the school so I’ll be a day teacher. The Firs has a massive garden so Nance wants to try a bit of self sufficiency but I’m not that keen on mud!’
For a while they chatted on about Nancy’s ideas before moving on to the coming invasion of all the Maynard children the next day.
‘You’ve changed Joey. I wanted to say so before but never found the right time.’
‘I know. It started when the trips left. Len wasn’t around to boss me so much so I felt a bit free-er. I mean I missed them loads at first but then, in defiance, I got my hair cut. When the san closed, what, ten fifteen years ago, it broke Jack’s heart but it meant , while he was just the school’s doctor, he had more time, felt less guilty about being away so much, and came to the conclusion that I wasn’t the invalid he’d been trying to make me. Less restriction here meant I didn’t need to escape to school so much. My life became lots happier so I didn’t feel the need to butt into others lives. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack, he’s always been my best friend, and he was doing his best. It can’t be comfortable when your wife collapses every month – unless she’s pregnant,’ an embarrassed flush spread across her cheeks, ‘but I am made of sterner stuff than that. Now who wants one of Anna’s biscuits, it’s your last chance.’
‘Come on, surely she won’t stop making them in England!’
‘But she’s not coming to England.’

That's a highly interesting take on Joey. And on her relationship with Jack.

Interesting to see that she's done most of the work for this meeting herself, with only the biscuits being done by Anna... And even more interesting that Anna isn't returning to England with them all.

I like your ideas for Kathie and Nancy as well. Exciting times ahead! :-)

The car was the last one on to the ferry and, almost before Stephen had applied the handbrake, Flix muttered ‘Loo!’ and dashed off.
Cecily laughed, ‘I’d better go after her.’ She gathered up hers and Felicity’s handbags and climbed out of the car. As he locked up, Stephen called after her, ‘I’ll look around and see if the other three made it. See you on deck.’ She waved in response and started up the steps.
As he walked towards the salon he was mobbed by two red-heads, ‘Steve, look at what I’ve got.’ Phil waved her left hand under his nose.
‘Sapphires! Very nice. Congratulations Phil, and when do we meet this paragon of virtue?’
Phil giggled, ‘Not for a couple of months. He’s visiting his grandparents in New Zealand. Geoff’s met him though.’
Geoff nodded ‘He’s okay,’ then he winced as Phil dug a finger in his middle.
‘He’s not okay. He’s perfect!’
Steve decided to put an end to this before it got out of hand and escalated into one of the twins lengthy squabbles. ‘Where’s Felix?’
‘Oh, we spotted you driving aboard so we were coming to meet you when this blonde dashed past us and into the Ladies. So he’s probably hanging around there looking like some sort of pervert.’
‘Shut up Phil. He said he would wait for the girls and we should find you and go back on deck. We’ve chosen the spot and I think this may be the time to join them.’
Phil stuck her tongue out at her twin but they ignored her and the three of them went together to find the others.

Con hugged her children, ‘I’m going to miss you!’
‘Come on girl. You’ll be late for Mike if you don’t get a wriggle on.’
Con made a face at Prof and carried on ‘Have a wonderful time with Dadcu and Mamgu. Claire make sure Joy and Amy don’t play too many tricks. Peter will help you make sure your Grandparents don’t muddle them up. And Jack..’ Jack’s lower lip had started to wobble, ‘be good.’
‘Byeee.’ She and Prof left the house for a final cwtsh.
‘Love you Doctor Evans.’
Con laughed, ‘Don’t call me that. Only one sort of doctor in the Maynard Clan. I’ll call you tomorrow. Have a splendacious time in Wales.’ Con dashed to the car before she could start blubbing and drove off, not daring to look back. It felt like it would be years before she would see them again.

Jack Maynard was woken by the sound of his wife singing in the shower. He enjoyed mornings now, when he could just lie there, peacefully. Whilst he had been at work, most mornings he had been jettisoned into action by the sound of the phone calling him to some life or death situation but now he could just relax. As Joey entered he smiled ‘Do we have to get up?’
‘Jack! You’re incorrigible! Yes, we have to get up. Don’t forget we’ve got a bunch of healthy young adults descending on us at some point today and I’ve got to help Anna prepare.’
Jack groaned ‘What have I done to deserve this?’
‘Ask me back to bed mostly!’ Joey giggled at the shock on her husband’s face but all thoughts of laughter stopped as Jack winced as he sat up. ‘Jack! What’s wrong? Is it your shoulder again?’
Jack nodded. ‘I’ll make an appointment at the spa. It seems to be the thing that helps the most.’
Once Joey had helped him ease his shirt over the painful shoulder she clattered down the stairs and grabbed a broom to start sweeping the saal.
She had almost finished when Anna came in,
‘Don’t tell me. I don’t sweep properly.’
‘You sweep fine. No, I have a request.’
The two ladies sat, since the children had left their relationship had become far less formal. Anna explained that she didn’t want the others to know she was leaving.
‘Why on earth not?’
Because I want these last weeks to be the same. Your family has been my family and I rather we enjoy this last time. I will tell them myself .’
Joey accepted that it was a major change for Anna and acquiesced to her wishes. Every time she thought of her friend leaving Jo’s tummy felt like it was doing cartwheels but she knew it was the right time for them to part.
Jack appeared just then so Anna scuttled back to the kitchen to finish preparing breakfast.
‘Do we know when the invasion starts?’
‘Not exactly. They weren’t planning to travel together, though I believe Felix and Stephen were sort of hoping to meet on the ferry. Con is picking up Charles from the airport and Len is travelling alone. I was surprise when they all said they would all come and help pack.’
‘What about their children?’
‘I think it was a truth universally acknowledged that kids would get under our feet. I remember packing to come here even if you don’t and it’s not like we won’t see them in Gloucestershire.’
‘I remember packing too. Are you planning to fall into boxes again?’
‘You rotter!’
‘And not to mention we don’t know what state our new home will be in with your housekeeping skills?’
Joey was lost for words now and launched a cushion at Jack’s head before saying ‘Haven’t I been training all this year. Didn’t I keep you comfortable while Anna was away tending her business?’
Jack dodged the missile but in doing so gave way to an involuntary gasp.
‘Jack I’m sorry. I’ll go make your appointment.’

Sorry, just a short bit today

Jack walked to the spa feeling lucky. He might have a crook shoulder but the rest of him was in full working order. He loved this view now he didn’t have to rush along the road, worrying about various patients. The Spa had taken over the san buildings sixteen years ago.

At first he’d refused stubbornly to see that the san wasn’t what it was supposed to be. Others had. His colleagues had slowly left. Anyone unfortunate enough to have an accident were being sent to Interlaken’s more insurance approved hospitals and the Gornetz Platz was well away from the popular tourist places anyway. Tuberculosis was no longer the ghoul it had been with the new refined antibiotics and it was longer seen as good sense to have extended periods of convalescence. Most aimed to be back at work as soon as possible. The world moved too fast to sit and watch the sun go down.

It was old Mrs Thompson who had, unbeknowingly, opened his eyes. ‘You’re so good, you lovely young doctors looking after us old biddies.’ After that he had noticed that any regular patients were rich, old, hypochondriac widows. The glory days of the modern sanatorium were over. As a spa it flourished for its new owners. All those stressed out people finally found a place where they slowed down and recovered from indulging in a frantic world; somewhere they could watch the night fall.
He picked up his pace; after all he didn’t want to be late back. He would have a sauna, a gentle swim, his favourite massage and he would be fine for weeks. He had come to the conclusion that, very occasionally, doctors weren’t the best thing for your health.

Joey had just put the broom away and was chatting to Anna as she washed her hands in the kitchen sink, ‘Sandwiches for lunch, then soup, salad and fruit for dinner. We’ll have wine with din-A CAR!’ She ran out like an excited teen-ager.
True to form, Phil was the first one to jump out the car and dash up the steps to hug her mother before skipping in to find Anna, all thoughts of her engagement forgotten in her pleasure of being home. Joey went to help her sons with the luggage, all of them talking ten to the dozen about the journey.
‘Where’s Steve? I thought you were coming in convoy.’
‘That’s Flix’s fault,’ said Geoff, ‘She kept making them stop so she could throw up or pee.’
Felix jumped in to protect his twin ‘She isn’t that bad. She’s just at that point of pregnancy. It’ll stop soon.’ He looked up and saw Joey’s consternation, ‘She’s fine. Honestly. Steve is not far behind us and is driving more carefully than I do. Well, he has got two expectant mothers on board.’ Jo stopped biting her lip and smiled, ‘I should know what it’s like but I never suffered much when I had you lot. Come on lets rescue Anna and it’s about time Phil showed me this ring of hers.’ Her eyebrows drew together as Geoff responded with a grunt, it seemed there was something wrong but they were too old now for her to interfere, either it would resolve itself or it wouldn’t.
Jack was walking through the gate as the blue car drove up beside him and he saw the three cheery faces grin at him.
‘How are you all?’
‘Tired!’
‘Achy!’
‘Sick!’
‘Poor Felicity. Never mind, honey, now you’re eleven weeks the nausea should stop soon.’
Felicity moaned, ‘That’s all anyone says to me. I thought pregnancy was supposed to be a joyous thing.’
‘Perhaps if you stopped all that exercising and slowed down a bit it might help.’
Cecily added her thoughts, ‘And ate properly rather than occasionally nibbling at a small piece of fruit.’
Felicity’s father looked at her with the ‘doctor expression’, ‘Sounds like ketones to me. More rest, child. You’re not a dancer anymore. And proper meals.’
‘You’ve made me feel worse!’
‘Boost the body with some sugar, take the edge off it and then eat what you fancy as soon as you fancy it. We’ll soon have you on your feet.’
‘Thanks!’ no-one could miss the sarcasm in her tone but there was no time to comment as the others crowded out of the house to greet them. Jo took one look at Flix and hurried her into the saal, sending Felix for ginger biscuits and sweet lemonade. Flix looked at the biscuits and shuddered but Jo was ready ‘I’ve got some photos to show you while you nibble on one of these.’ Cecily joined them and they were soon distracted by Adrienne’s latest trip to the States where she had managed to take some time to see Auntie Rob.
‘Gosh, she’s not wearing her habit’ commented Cecily.
‘No. The second Vatican council meant that changed. Rob said it took a while to adjust to the shorter skirts but she’s found it a great blessing in her work. She looks very peaceful, doesn’t she?’ there was a note of regret in her voice; even now she still missed her little sister.
Felicity was surprised to find that she’d eaten the biscuit and after finishing her drink she reached for another. Cecily, noting this decided that distraction was the thing, ‘I thought you should know, Mamma my twins sent you a personal message. It goes “See you soon. Daddy’s got a new job. We’re going to live near you.”’
Jo, about to respond in amazement, heard the call from the hall ‘Come on ladies, lunch.” Felicity was surprised to find that she wasn’t feeling so bad and they all went to munch though a mountain of sandwiches.

Post subject:  Re: Turn the Full Circle- Updated 1/9/10

Sorry if this is a bit dull but they insisted I told what they were up to

Whilst Felicity was asleep, and the others unpacking, Len arrived with her companion. Jo and Jack went to greet them.
‘Margot! What are..a wonderful surprise!’ Glancing at Jack and seeing his eyebrows mirroring her own Joey rushed forward to give her daughter a hug. Alarmed at the quivering that shook Margot’s body and the hot splashes sinking through her light blouse Joey knew that something was vey amiss.
Margot, ever independent, broke away from her mother, grabbed her bag and walked into her childhood home, head down, to be hailed first by stunned silence then wild jubilation. She, however, ignored it all and took refuge in her old room. This was going to be harder than she’d imagined. She knelt by the window for a minutes prayer before removing her head covering.

Meanwhile her parents were looking quizzically at Len. ‘Don’t ask me,’ she grumbled, ‘She hasn’t given any explanation. She phoned a week ago, said she’d been given permission to come and would I give her a lift. She’s barely spoken all the way.’ Her parents reassured Len then helped to carry her bags despite her telling them they should be taking it easy, ‘I can manage this move for you,’ she assured them.
‘No Len.’ Her mother sounded abrupt, ‘We can all manage, it’s not your job to organise us. The plans are made. You must relax a bit and be guided by us. Remember, we are all over the age of consent and responsible for ourselves. ‘

The final visitors arrived during Kaffee und Kuchen, which the younger members had demanded, declaring that tea was too normal. They were only aware of the arrival because Con ran in and demanded the use of the phone, not waiting for an answer before dashing out. Fortunately Charles was not far behind and explained that Con had promised to phone Prof before he left for Wales and they were later than expected as Charles plane had been late.
‘Can’t we use the man’s proper name?’ complained Jack
‘Don’t be such a stick in the mud;’ Mike responded as he entered with the cases, ‘it's only to differentiate between him and little Peter.’
Mike hadn’t noticed Con creeping up behind him and jumped as she declared ‘Peter will kill you if you call him little. Don’t you know, eleven is big!’
‘I can control him with both hands behind my back.’
‘Sorry people. Hello.’ Con grinned broadly around the room, ‘Good to see you all got here safely. Margot- you look as pretty as ever or am I not supposed to say that? Mamma you look particularly fit and Flix you don’t.’
Seated around the dining table they started a news share where they took it in turn to contribute the highlights of their lives so that later they wouldn’t have to continually repeat themselves to individuals. Phil, as the youngest went first.
‘I’m engaged to Ian. He’s a child psychologist who works at my school but we’re not getting married for a few years yet,’ and she smiled at the glitters lighting up her ring, so busy doing this that she didn’t notice Geoff’s glowering expression.
Geoff changed from a frown to a smile as he realised everyone was waiting for him to take his turn, ‘Nothing to say really. Just working at the nursery developing new roses. And where’s Claire?’
‘She chose not to come here- she’s joining us at Die Blumen. Cecily, your turn.’
‘Twins have started school. John’s office are moving him to,’ she paused for dramatic effect,’ Gloucester AND,’ she shouted over the hubbub, ‘they think I’m having twins again.’ The uproar that followed this statement was bought to an end by Felicity banging her spoon on the table.
‘Excuse me. I thought the discussions were supposed to come later.’ As they settled she went on ‘William is touring with the company and should be back a couple of months before baby turns up. He’s going to be in Berne next week so I might take time to go see him. If I can stop throwing up.’
‘I’ve just been working as a locum deciding where I want to settle. There are a couple of partnerships I’m considering.’
Then it was Mike’s turn, confident of making a furore he made them wait while he sipped his wine, ‘I’m engaged.’
‘What as?’
‘A husband, what else?’ The resulting silence could have been cut with a blunt butter knife.
‘Boo!’
The family laughed and demanded more detail. ‘Her name is Jenny. She’s one of the nurses at HMS Haslar. I met her when I broke my wrist last year.’
‘My news is very tame after that,’ moaned Charles. ‘Claudia and I are now settled in Spain with her family. Carlotta is now one and my Spanish is improving.’
‘And I’m not exciting either, just continuing the content life with Beth and the two boys.’ Stephen finished speaking and turned to Margot, concern in his eyes.
She smiled at him in response, and then turned to the family, ‘All I’m saying is that I’ve got some decisions to make and Reverend Mother suggested it might help to spend time with my family.’
Con jumped in quickly before anyone started asking questions. ‘I’ve got my doctorate; we’re moving to Wales to be near Pro..Peter’s family,’ she grinned at her father, ‘The family are all very excited about it and I can return to writing the fantasy fiction I love.’
‘I’m like Stephen and Charles really. Just living at home. Phoebe is disappointed that the Platz branch has closed and she now has to go to Glendower House. Robert is leaving his prep school and Helen starts at The School in September.’
Jo used her turn to explain that the school building were going to be turned into a hotel that offered holiday courses of subjects like art and cookery. Gill Culver was heading it and Joey had been booked to return for a few weeks the next year to speak at a creative writing break.
Jack rounded it all off ‘I’m now fully retired and looking forward to a peaceful time with my wife and family.’
Stephen then proposed a toast, ‘Here’s to the Maynards and peace- not words that often go together!’

I think this may not be accurate- sorry if it upsets anyone.

Over breakfast Joey admitted she was holding the keys to the school and some bright spark (most of the family accused Phil but she denied it passionately) suggested they could go and look round. The men wanted to see the place where so many family legends had been formed and the triplets and Phil wanted to renew memories of many years of fun.

Felicity bowed out stating ‘I hated the place’ and her family nodded. Felicity’s heart had been linked with The Royal Ballet School since she had passed her audition. ‘Anyway,’ she added, ‘I’m supposed to be resting.’
‘I’ll stay with you. The School isn’t the same for me either. I preferred Glendower House.’ Cecily had spent the last four years of school life in Britain.
Jack said ‘Good-bye,’ and disappeared into his office while the others waited for their mother who soon appeared carrying a couple of empty baskets.
‘What are those for?’
‘You’ll see.’
As they approached the school doors, Margot, who was once again wearing her veil, asked Jo quietly ‘Have you the keys to all the buildings?’ Joey assessed her daughter, noticing the dark circles under the blue eyes and the grim turn to her mouth.
‘Yes. Here Margot, why don’t you look after them?’ Then raising her voice spoke to all of them, ‘I’ve got permission for us to visit but do not move anything, pack or unpack stuff. The final removal takes place next week and all this has been sorted already. There’s one exception. I was told that we could help ourselves to any produce in the gardens. I suggest then, that we take an hour for memories then meet out the back.’ At this Margot flung the doors open and extricating one key from the bunch shouted ‘I’ll leave these here in case of need’ and they flocked into the hall prepared for a good nose around.

On returning from a quick visit to the Memorial garden, now stripped of its furnishings, Joey noticed the Catholic Chapel door was open so thought she might go say a prayer for the puzzles in her children’s lives. As her eyes adapted to the dim interior she saw Margot kneeling at the altar dedicated to Our Lady so she started to make a quiet retreat but Margot looked up and beckoned her forward. Jo made her genuflection and knelt down. The pair remained in silent supplication for a few minutes and then Margot gently touched her mother’s shoulder, ‘May we talk? This feels like the right time and I can’t think of a better place in which to explain.’

Joey took her hand and the two sat in the front seats under the crucifix. Margot lifted her eyes to look at her Saviour, took a deep breath and gushed ‘I don’t know if I can continue in the Order?’
Joey sat still; their fingers were entwined together and Margot’s rosary had somehow become twisted round both their wrists.

Due to her trepidation Margot babbled, ‘I spoke first to Sister Bernadette. She’s so lovely and then Reverend Mother said before making a final decision she would risk her reputation and send me home for a while. Then, she said, I would understand what HE wanted. She said that as much as many would think me a disgrace it was worse to have me imprison myself. Too many idealistic young novices turned into tired, embittered, officious grouches. Those are the words she used.
‘I loved my work, Mamma, although it was hard. So much death and deprivation I could help relieve but, somehow I felt there should be more. I prayed through all the offices for guidance but in the end I felt I was punishing myself. I would remember my childish tantrums, my devil and how close I came to killing Betty and I wanted to punish myself. I couldn’t accept God’s forgiveness fully because I couldn’t forgive myself.
Also I was restless. Some days I wanted to stand in the middle of Chapel and scream. Scream to wake them up to a big world out there. Scream to wake me up to the misery I felt but wouldn’t acknowledge. Scream just for screaming’s sake. That’s where Sister Bernadette came in.’

Jo and Margot were so caught up in their moment that they failed to hear a scuffle at the door as Con murmured ‘No Len. It’s their business, not ours. Let’s go invade Matey’s room.’

Inside, Margot relaxed and smiled, her blue eyes softened at her memories. ‘Sister Bernadette is the most wonderful person I’ve ever met. She’s over eighty, tiny and frail looking but the love of God is so strong in her she exudes a peace that fills any space she enters. Anyway, she caught a severe cold which settled on her chest and I was called in to tend her. When she was recovered I went to make a final check and she spoke to me. She said that she could see I was restless, like a panther in a cage is how she put it. She said the feelings wouldn’t go and I should face them, I should discover the deep decision I had to make and I could be sure that whatever I chose to do God would continue to bless me.

‘So, to cut a long story short, here I am. She was right you know and so was Mother Superior. I think I’m coming out of the order.’ She blinked a tear from her eye, ‘Are you very upset with me?’

Joey raised her face and looked at the face of Christ. ‘My dear, your contentment is the most important thing to me. I feel the same for all of you. We all have to readjust our lives from moment to moment and you are no different. But of one thing you can be certain, we love you. Whatever you’ve decided we will be with you just never disappoint yourself. Decide where you’re heading and aim for it to the best of your abilities. At this time, I am more proud of you than ever.’ Mother and daughter hugged, and then left the chapel arm in arm. Margot looked at the scenery and knew peace. ‘If you don’t mind I’ll go home now and talk to Dad.’ They hugged again and Margot walked away with a lighter step than she’d had for a while.

Joey watched her and then took a few deep breaths to give her time to pray for Margot before joining the others to pick fruit before locking up and going home.

The next week was a busy one. Slowly they worked through the house sorting out rubbish, junk and things worth keeping. Most of the furniture was remaining at Freudesheim as Jack and Joey were moving to a far smaller place. Any furnishings, gifts and ornaments were put to one side for the family to sort through later and decide who was to keep what.
Margot unearthed, from some trunk in the attic, an old dress of hers that she just about still fitted into and was relieved to find that once she was changed the family all relaxed more in her company. One evening she had a heart to heart conversation with her triplets to explain her situation. Con had guessed this was coming and was happy for Margot to make her own decisions, especially as she had confessed some fifteen years before to now attending Church of England with her husband. Len was finding Margot’s new plans harder to digest, principally because Margot refused to discuss the matter further.

It seemed to Len as if everyone was ignoring her. The boys all tended to flock together and investigate the less accessible areas in the roof, where finding relics of their former lives lead to much storytelling, confessions and hilarity. Felicity wouldn’t take her advice to rest and went to Berne to stay with her husband, William, as the company was there. Cecily happily elected to assist Anna with the cleaning and cooking. The rest gathered around Jo as first they cleared her study then used it to sort and stack the stuff going to England. Len felt unwanted, she would suggest ideas but felt no-one was listening.

Jack was aware that these were the last weeks that the whole family would be together for any length of time. He was also conscious that in the past, due to work pressures and an over concern about his wife’s health, his children had been sidelined. Each day, anxious to try to heal any breaches, he chose a different member of the family to help him sort either his office or the garage.

He’d taken on Felicity first, before she went to Berne. She was able to reassure him that she felt so much better and had, for the most part, stopped being sick. She and William were very happy and her Dad mustn’t worry about her. William might spend hours dancing with Betty, Hannah and Jane but at night he came home to her.
The boys had all been uncomplicated, though Geoff had voiced his concerns over Phil’s engagement- how quick it had been and that Phil didn’t seem to be taking it seriously. His father had managed to reassure him saying ‘If it goes wrong we just have to be there for Phil. It’s her business and we can’t interfere.’

Margot’s news he had taken in his stride. As Joey had told her, it was more important that his children were content than they tried to keep their parents happy, and in this case he was happy to have Margot around again. For the most part his children were a cheerful crew. One morning as they were sitting round the breakfast table he noticed they were all happily sharing family jokes, even Con who was suffering homesickness for the first time ever. Then his attention was caught by Len. She wasn’t content. He could tell by the way she held her shoulders and from the manner in which she constantly tried to wait upon her mother. He could also see by Jo's pursed her lips that she was becoming annoyed. Jo had gained her independence after his years of molly-coddling and, it seemed, resented her daughter trying to put her back. He was going to have to do something and fast.

‘Len, will you help me this morning? You’re a nice organised sort and I need help sorting my filing cabinet.’

The two went to his office together. Jack sat at the desk and Len fetched the first set of the files. After a couple of hours, during which a lot of out of date papers were binned, the call came for coffee.
‘Go and get ours will you love? We’ve barely had a chance to chat yet. I want to know how my eldest grandchild is.’
When Len returned, Jack had moved the chairs next to each other and had a photo of Len’s family in front of him, ‘Phoebe looks just like you did at that age.'
‘Yes- but its only looks. She doesn’t act like me at all.’
Jack smiled, Phoebe may be an irresponsible, feather-brain but she was extremely charming.
‘You all look very cheerful in this picture.’
‘Yes.’
‘If you don’t mind me saying so- you don’t look too happy now.’
‘No.’ Len paused, what should she say. Then seeing the disquiet in her father’s expression dropped her guard ‘It’s the family, Dad. It doesn’t need me anymore. I want to help them- and you- but nobody lets me. I’m still the eldest but no-one tells me anything so I can’t help them.’
Jack slowly stirred his coffee, ‘Is that your identity then Len, as a rescuer?’
‘No..Yes..Maybe? I don’t know. I try to help but I all I get is ‘Don’t interfere’ or the younger ones just disappear. I’m only doing my duty.’

Jack sighed and put down his spoon, ‘Is it your duty though? What happens when they do have problems?’
‘Sort it out themselves. Or call Mamma. Or, recently, visit Con.’
‘From what I remember the boys often went to Con. The girls have started doing so for about twenty years- yes, since you were all about nineteen.’
‘Why Dad? What’ve I done wrong? Why don’t they like me?’
‘Well you can get that idea out of your head- they do like you. Sometimes they find you a little overbearing that’s all.’ Jack took a few minutes to finish his coffee and signalled to Len to do the same, then putting his cup down he leant forward and took his daughter’s hand.
‘You must remember the Ted Grantley furore and the advice our one and only Mary-Lou gave you?’
‘Yes. But I did back down. I let Con and Margot lead their own lives.’
‘Instead you took up Jack Lambert, her cronies and any number of other middles.’ Len opened her mouth to respond but Jack shushed her.
‘No. Listen. I felt..feel guilty about much of this. No, let me explain. It started a long time before you were born and I want you to understand my apologies.'

I do feel for Len , because even with the Ted furoe, she was still expected to help out such as Mike going down the cliff side. They all turned to her. And it's a little unfair of Joey after expecting Len to do that and expect because she's changed that Len can magically stop doing that. The last time Len tried, Joey faints for two hours leaving Len to cope with everything.

Thanks, am enjoying this

‘When I first met your mother, she was a cheeky, jolly, brat of a schoolgirl, who, in spite of her failings got on well with practically everyone. Due to a series of severe chest infections, which nowadays would have probably had her labelled asthmatic, she had an air of fragility that no amount of care enabled her to throw off. Even a simple cold could end up as a life or death situation. As she grew up we became engaged and, as you know had a wild flight from Austria to an uncertain future and I left her to serve my country still thinking of her as that frail girl.

‘What I failed to observe was that she had thrown off that fragile air. She had, in fact, grown into a strong woman who liked to do things that stretched her; possibly because she had been denied so much as a child. I neglected this need in her. In a way, after I returned I was trying to make up for leaving her and I continued to treat her as a grown up version of that delicate child I had fallen in love with. I suppose you could say I kept her ill- and she responded to that.

‘The second reason you were so over responsible was my temper. Remember Margot’s struggle? Well it was nothing to mine. When you were very little your mother shielded you but as you all got older you noticed. Silly things would set me off but most particularly if I thought Mamma was ill. Subconsciously you picked up on it.

‘So, there you were, a child with your mother’s caring nature, protecting the other children from my temper and sparring your mother any worries. Is it any wonder that now you still look for that position. I’m sorry. That task by the nature of time had to end. Your youngest sibling is twenty-three. None of them need that sort of care anymore and your mother s one of the fittest sixty year olds I’ve ever known. So the problem is that you are attempting to fill a habitual position that no longer exists.’

‘What do you think I should do about it?’

‘It’s easier for me to tell you than for you to do it. Firstly just stop. Relax. Pretend you’re on holiday and don’t have to do anything. Be a child again. Ask for help not to help- it is much easier to accept help from those who have needed us. Each and every one of you has different talents and we mustn’t let other people go to waste. Let Con give you advice about Phoebe; ask the boys about Robert’s experiences at school. Involve them in helping you and then they will come to you when they need your talents. Just remember to refer them to the best person even if they come to you. Finally, don’t forget poor old Reg, he’s worried about you too. Let him help a bit.’

Len had been looking at the floor through much of this, at this she sighed, smiled and looked at her father, ‘I do kind of take over don’t I?’ Jack nodded his reply and suddenly for no reason at all it all seemed very funny and they both burst out laughing. Len kissed her Dad’s head and, still giggling headed for the door to wash before lunch. As she reached for the handle there was an almighty crash which shook the windows and when the door was flung open came the sound of Geoff’s clarion call ‘Oh my god! That’s blown it!’

Jack, Joey and their daughters met in the hall. Margot took one look round, ‘Cripes!’ And she ran up the stairs followed closely by Len and Con. Someone rapped on the door and Jack took charge. ‘Cecil you get the door. Quick Phil fetch the first aid kit from my room. Jo, go and ask Anna to delay lunch.’
Each rushed to do as they were told- obviously the guys were in some sort of trouble. That morning the brothers had declared that they’d finish clearing the loft. Most of the trunks and suitcases were down but there were still about six boxes to move down to sort through, the rest of the stuff was junk and would stay up there for the new owners to inherit.
The triplets arrived at the bottom of the ladder and listened to the thumps, groans and swearing. They glanced at each other and then Con, who happened to be wearing jeans, scrambled up the rungs, ‘Hallo. Gosh it’s dark up here, where are the torches?’
‘Dropped ‘em.’
Con explained to the two below her and Margot ran to fetch a candle from her room, relaying the news to her parents as she passed.
Con took the candle, lit it and viewed what little she could see. Geoff was lying on the floor; Steve was bent over a chair; Mike was valiantly holding up a shelf on which were a number of what looked like paint tins. As soon as the candle gave some light Charles, who was splattered with something dark, also grabbed the shelf and the two men lowered it to the floor, avoiding Felix, who was kneeling, struggling to remove something from his head.
Margot came up at Con’s request to check Geoff who was groaning and Con sent Len to fetch some rags. Jack handed up a lit hurricane lamp he had brought from the garage and it made a considerable improvement in vision. Felix had a paint tin clamped upside down on his head.
Later they pieced together the tale. Having taken the boxes down, they decided to have a check round. Felix had noticed a shelf and climbed onto a chair to see what was on it. As the chair was old and creaky, Stephen stood behind to steady it. Mike and Charles were holding the torches waiting to receive anything Felix thought worth keeping. Felix had made a sudden exclamation as he knocked a lid off a pot and both the torches were swung round to see what was wrong. This meant that Geoff, returning from the hatch, suddenly found himself plunged into darkness and tripped over the old dog basket. He in turn pushed Stephen who promptly fell onto the back of the chair, winding himself in the process, and knocked Felix off whom, grasping at things to stop his fall, managed to knock the pot whose lid had come off so that it fell upside down onto his head, Charles getting splashed on the way. Fortunately Mike had had the sense to steady the shelf until rescue came. In the melee the torches had both been dropped and somehow broken.
Margot quickly examined Geoff and established that he was only bruised, though his elbows and knees might hurt for a couple of days. Steve was sat up to recover his breathe and Len attacked Charles, mopping up the worst of the black glossy paint. The problem was Felix. Con couldn’t budge the tin and the paint was slowly oozing down his face, effectively blinding him. In the end they had to guide him down the ladder to the drive where Jack, with Mike’s help, finally broke the seal and Felix was free- without any injury.
The three were met in the hall by Jo, who was waiting with some apprehension, however when she saw Jack’s relaxed attitude she knew there was no lasting harm. When she turned her attention to Felix she couldn’t help laughing which drew the others of the family who wanted to see what the joke was. Soon they were all laughing, even Felix. Felix, who was usually fastidious about his appearance, was black!
‘It’s just like when we came out here. Somebody has to turn black. Let’s hope we can get it off without stinking the house out.’
Turpentine did the job, well mostly- Felix did appear to be prematurely gray for a while. His and Charles clothes would never be the same though, thankfully, they had been wearing old stuff. The incident soon passed into memory as their final day on the Platz approached.

Post subject:  Re: Turn the Full Circle- Updated 3/10/10

Just one day left. The countdown was the only thing in Jo’s head when she woke up. All the packing was done. In one day the lorry would be here to take the home out of the house. Yesterday they had spent the day just mooching about, getting in each other’s way, bemoaning the fact they were leaving.
‘That has to change!’
‘What?’ Jack disturbed from his sleep realised his wife was talking to herself again. He closed his eyes for some serious dozing. Jo got up and was surprised to find her daughters already in the saal looking guilty.
‘Girls. We need to find something to do today.’
Len answered, ‘It’s OK Mamma. We’ve got it all planned.’
‘Yesterday was very goodbye-ish, so we’ve decided today should be hello-ish.’ Added Margot
‘Just a touch of goodbye in a final walk to the Auberge.’ Was Con’s comment.
‘Followed by ‘hello’ to a new life!’ Grinned Phil
‘Ready for a splendid holiday in Austria.’
‘With no regrets.’
Jo laughed, ‘I’ll leave it to you then. Don’t forget we say ‘Goodbye’ to Stephen, Charles, Mike and Geoff.’ The four had to return to work and families the next day but were staying after the others left in the early morning to see the lorry loaded first.

As soon as breakfast was over Geoff and Felix cleared the table, Stephen going with them to fetch Anna. ‘Right. Mamma, Dad, we’ve booked you a morning session at the spa and Anna has agreed to go with you as our treat. We’re preparing all the meals for the rest of the day so don’t worry. Just enjoy yourselves. Come on, I’m driving.’

Left behind the others soon voted Len as chief organiser. It wasn’t long before Margot, Mike and Phil were preparing a Swiss style lunch, whilst Con and Charles snaffled a corner of the large kitchen to prepare Sachertorte and Zwetschkenkuchen ready for an Austrian sort of Kaffee and Kuchen. Flixy and Cecily were making some alterations to some old dresses that had been found in the attic. Occasionally small groups disappeared to practise something and Stephen and Mike would make each other laugh with bad jokes and puns.
At 11.30, Con went to fetch their elders whilst the others laid the table and cleaned the kitchen before Anna could see the mess. Normally tidy while working, they had found that all of them in the space had turned it into a battle zone with a flour drift in the corner and greasy fingerprints on nearly everything.

The older generation were greeted with the news that they were having an early Mittagessen so they could take time over their walk to the Auberge. The meal was delicious, Margot’s rosti pronounced as brilliant and Felix’ salad dressing announced as interesting.

Once they’d changed, they all started walking together but soon natural splits occurred. Jack, Margot and Felix started discussing some of the latest medical advances and the rest were happy to leave them to it; as Phil put it ‘It might be clever stuff but all I care about is whether they can put me back together if I’m ill.’
After the medical contingent came the teachers, Charles and Phil giving Felicity their tips as she was to be a ballet mistress after her child had been born. Soon they were joined by Len because both her mother and Con had slipped into daydream mode. Len nudged Charles and indicated the two with her head ‘Who’ll publish first?’ Jo and Con were ambling along with their dark eyes glowing and vacant expressions. Behind those two followed Anna, escorted by Geoff and Mike; she might not understand everything that was being said but was delighted with her tall, handsome companions. Acting as whippers in at the back were Stephen and Cecily; Cecily’s husband, John, and Stephen worked in Westminster together and they had many social acquaintances, and enemies, in common.

Meanwhile the teachers chat had turned to the closure of the Gornetz Platz branch of the school.
‘It’s a shame. I was planning to work here in a couple of years. Why shut it down?’
Len gave the first answer, ‘Not enough pupils. My Phoebe told me there were only about sixty here last year and most of those were seniors or senior middles.’
At this point, Jo and Con caught up with them having been dragged from their reveries by Con tripping and catching at her mother.
Phil carried on questioning, ‘So why so few pupils. I mean, Glendower House is going great guns. They had to expand this year.’
‘Yes’ answered Jo, ‘But a lot of that was due to parents moving their girls from here once they heard we were closing this branch.’
Charles added his bit, ‘It must have been very expensive to send a daughter out here. Glendower House is a bit cheaper I believe. People with money prefer the panache of say Roedean or Cheltenham Ladies.’
Len turned to Con, ‘You always said you’d never send Claire or the twins here. ‘
‘True. I want them nearer to us. I want to be there when they get a part as angel number three or whatever in the nativity. I want to support the school at sales. I’d like to have them home at least once a term. We’re family. Claire isn’t even going to Glendower till she’s twelve and it’s only just over an hour from our new home.’
‘Also,’ Added Jo, ‘The San closing had a big impact. No more relatives or word of mouth from friends of relatives receiving treatment.’
‘Hm. What about the Millies?’
‘They never offered the courses that people who regularly go to finishing school wanted.’
‘And it was some way off the beaten track. I mean they want their ‘gals’ to enjoy loads of culture. Much easier for a school nearer a main city.’
‘So,’ Phil rounded things off in her usual manner, ‘It became too expensive, too far from home and lost its main feeder. Which meant bye-bye Gornetz Platz. I suppose there is more opportunity to travel as well and families want to experience it together.’

Soon the family were sat outside the Auberge enjoying drinks when Anna stood up, ‘I have something to say. It is that I do not go to England with your Mamma but will stay in Austria.’ A general squeaking rose round the table at this and Anna sat down pink in the face and nudged Joey.
‘Anna has been saving her money and, with some of her cousins, is buying Die Blumen from us. Their intention is to open it as a gasthaus.’
A moments silence then Geoff, the irrepressible, jumped to his feet and raised his coke in the air, ‘Here’s to Anna. The best cook in the world! May her gasthaus be as successful as she deserves.’
They all rose to their feet and Anna’s blush deepened. Charles added, ‘She’s not just a good cook, she’s family. Anna we love you; we’ll miss you and, I’m sure, we will visit your new enterprise whenever we need a holiday.’
Margot finished by saying, ‘Anna, you mean so much to all of us and we hope you’ll be very happy.’

Soon they started back home after shouting a cheery good-bye to the echo. Con, Charles and Geoff rushed a head to get their Austrian Kaffee und Kuchen ready. After this was eaten and cleared the girls ran upstairs to change while the guys moved the chairs in the saal to provide a performance area, with the piano at one side. Then Joey, Jack and Anna were led to the front seats, wondering what was going to happen. A great deal of giggling was heard outside the door and Felicity sat at the piano playing a selection of simple tunes until Len’s voice called ‘Ready’ and Stephen went to the front.
‘Welcome to the first and last performance of the Maynard junior review. Please be assured that all the performers tonight have given up being somewhere between forty and twenty and, as none of their children or colleagues are present, have opted to be somewhere round fourteen. Please remember that cameras cannot be used in the...’ he looked round ‘...theatre as this could cause severe embarrassment later on. Ladies and gentleman, for you delectation and delight, we’re starting with a fashion statement from our glamorous gals displaying the best fashions you can get in our times.’
As he finished, in walked the daughters of the house, with the exception of Felicity, wearing their school uniform dresses. Felicity had refused to join in, stating a)that it would make her sick again b) that it wasn’t her school and c) it was the most unflattering colour she could think of. Jack and Jo burst out laughing at the four figures in gentian and one in brown.
‘You know, the brown is much pleasanter than the blue,’ mused Jo, ‘I wonder why we changed?’
‘Better design too.’ Said Felicity.
‘It was one of the good things about changing school.’ Stated Cecily looking smug.
Stephen interrupted, ‘If we’re going to finish in time for an early night can you women stop wittering please. First on the program for your distraction, not one, not two but three lovely ladies will sing, with the voices of angels, a song from that most annoying of films The Sound of Music.’
Felicity played the introduction while the others scrambled for seats and the triplets sang So Long, Farewell, their voices blended perfectly and Felicity had taught them some simple moves to produce a very polished performance. Mike stepped forward as the applause died, ‘Can’t be bothered with that fancy stuff- here’s Flix to dance.’ Someone pushed the button on the cassette player and Felicity performed a simple piece of her own choreography. Jo had tears in her eyes as the dance ended and the others wondered why she was so willing to give up performing but Flix knew her own abilities and though she was good she was not brilliant. Her family though, thought she was perfect.
Next Phil and Geoff played a duet. Phil’s flute sounded fine but Geoff pounded away on the piano as if scared he couldn’t be heard, Joey wasn’t the only one who had to suppress a grin.
‘Just one more item and we’ll have some dancing. Cecily and Charles haven’t told anyone what they’re doing so I won’t give them a fancy introduction- not sure they’re worth it. Be prepared for the worst- at least they have promised it’ll be very short.’
Charles took his place at the piano and Cecily stood behind him and announced, ‘We’d like to start by apologising to Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.’ Then Charles started an introduction and the two sang
Don’t cry for us Gornetz Platz
The truth is we’ll not forget you
You saw our wild ways
Our mad existence
We’ll always love you
Though at a distance.
This was met with howls from the audience, not to mention a few tossed cushions. Then the chairs were pushed back and they danced some of the dances they had been taught as children.
It was not long before they had supper and started to head for bed as they had an early start - those going to the Tiernsee did anyway. The four men left behind would only go once the stuff had gone and the keys been handed to the agent. Then they would make their way back to families and work.

Slight change of scene. Thank you for the encouragement.

The young woman sat on the train, her rucksack on the seat beside her, determinedly ignoring the young men sitting opposite. To look at she appeared to be around seventeen, the petite frame inherited from her birth mother, her long black hair caught up in a pony tail belied her twenty three years. Even less would a casual onlooker believe that she’d just displayed her artwork in a small London gallery to great critical acclaim. One of the young men nudged his neighbour and needlessly pointed out her beauty and then reached forward to try and get her attention. She whipped her face round to give him a stare. ‘If you touch me I’ll break your bleeding arm!’ she growled. He shifted back in his seat, trying to look nonchalant and swiping at an imaginary fly.
At the station they all got out. Claire made sure her camera was safe round her neck, slung her rucksack over one shoulder, picked up her art kit and, still ignoring the boys, jumped out and looked around. A blonde woman was waving a her. ‘Hi Hunny, how you doing?’
‘OK. Here grab this will you?’
The young men watched but their faces fell as the two females climbed in a brand new, expensive car. The girl was definitely out of their league. In the car, Erica was wondering why Claire was so silent but filled in by babbling on about her four children and husband, Sir George. As they drew up outside Die Blumen, Claire broke her reverie, ‘When do the rest get here?’
‘Tonight. Most of them anyway. Ruey arrives tomorrow; Adrienne’s only popping up for a couple of days, hopefully before I go back. I think Roddy and Roger are calling in as well but that is after I’ve gone.’
‘You’re not here for the whole fortnight?’
‘No. I’m afraid being married to a landed baronet means a certain amount of social duties. I sit on various committees and am lady opener of the local fete.’
‘Oh, I’ll miss you. Are all the Maynards coming?’ She did her best to sound casual.
‘Mike has to return to HMS something-or-other, Stephen is due back at his office in a week and is spending the remaining time with Beth and the kids. Baby Carlotta is only a year old so Chas is back in Spain and Geoff couldn’t get any more time off.’
‘Thank God!’
‘Geoff you mean?’
‘Yes Erica, he’s a pain. He acts silly round me but he’s my brother for God’s sake.’ Then she muttered confusedly ‘At least, I think so.’
‘You don’t! That would be so wrong!’
‘NO! He’ll get over it. It’s something else, don’t worry, I’ll sort it.’
Erica knew from experience to leave it at that, Claire was a very independent young lady with a free spirit. If Claire wouldn’t talk about it, she wouldn’t.
They decided to share a bedroom, quickly unpacked and changed. Erica saying what a relief it was to think that for a week she’d be able to doss about in an old pair of jeans and a tee shirt.
‘But your clothes are beautiful!’
‘I know. However I do feel like Lady Erica Jane in them. I’d rather be plain Erica on holiday. You wouldn’t believe how tedious all those committee meetings can be. Either people are ingratiating themselves or trying to impress me. There are a couple of terrible social climbers who try to impress others by claiming a close relationship with me. Not to mention one, who is forever telling everyone that I’m nothing special and think it’s her duty to keep me in my place. I know what I am; the woman lucky enough to marry George.
‘Sounds ghastly. Not being married to George I mean the rest of it. Not that I want to be married to George. I mean..’
Erica laughed ‘I know what you mean.’
‘Actually I had a little of that sort of thing as soon as the reviews were published. People claiming they went to school with me and that. One guy insisted I was in the class below him! One person is really bugging me making a claim to my talent but’ Claire came to a halt ‘Let’s not go there and just enjoy a bit of peace from the public eye.’
‘And spend some time with family.’
‘Mmm’ Claire didn’t sound enthusiastic ‘Anyway now I’m off to take photos while the light’s good. What you doing?’
‘Reading. I picked up Sleeping Murder last week and this strikes me as just the right time to enjoy Christie’s last.’
‘Shall I tell you who did it?’
‘Don’t you dare! Go away brat, see you later.’

When the four cars arrived Erica and Claire ran out to greet them. Claire headed straight for Phil with ‘Hi Carrots’ to which she got the normal response of ‘Hello Titch’ but with the added comment of ‘Look at this’ and the ring was flashed around again.
‘I’m so happy for you, Phil. Ian seemed a great guy when we met.’
‘You only liked him because he bought one of your pictures!’
‘True. But then I like anyone who provides a bottle of good wine, or two. That was a brilliant evening.’
‘Was it? I can’t remember.’ And the two went into fits of giggles which only got worse when they saw Margot’s expression, ‘Don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.’
‘Ian did fill me in with what I forgot. Did the strange French man ever contact you?’
The laughter dropped from Claire’s face ‘Yes.. Hello Mamma’ and she went to receive a bear hug from her mother while Phil and Margot were left with bemused expressions.
Next morning Claire rose early, carefully dressed taking care not to rouse Erica and left a note. She nabbed a bread roll from the kitchen and left the house sketchbook in hand. She had loads to think about and a critical decision to make and felt it would be done better alone.

At breakfast the usual question arose ‘What shall we do today?’ Erica had already explained where Claire had gone.
‘It’s going to be a scorcher of a day,’ said Jo, turning from the window.
‘I don’t know about you but Anna wants some shopping in Innsbruck,’ said Jack, ‘so I’m going to take her.’
‘To be absolutely honest I’d like a day of sheer selfish relaxation,’ sighed Felicity
‘Me too!’ added Cecily
‘A day of chat then,’ suggested Jo
‘And swimming. Best place when it’s hot,’ added Felix. This last was met with universal approval.
‘Claire said something about taking photos and sketches of us too.’
‘Even better, a day of genteel posing.’
Con went to answer the phone, ‘It’s Ruey! She stayed overnight in Innsbruck and is getting the next train up. Will someone meet her as she’s fed up of her suitcase.’
‘I can go one better,’ and Jack went to take the phone from Con and tell Ruey thet he’d pick her up when shopping.

Post subject:  Re: Turn the Full Circle- Updated 17/10/10

Unusually for the Maynard family the next few days were peaceful. The weather continued to be hot and they all spent their days swimming, ambling round the lake or lazing. The only unsettling things were Claire’s emotions which went from grouchiness, solitude and wild hilarity. When she was around, and not lost in some silent reverie, Claire made sketches of all the family saying that she had a project and they’d find out about it in due course.

At the week-end Adrienne arrived for a couple of days, bringing a gown Erica had commissioned. That evening the weather broke and they all slept better than they had previously. The next day, the rain having cleared, was still bright but had a refreshing breeze which made them all feel a bit more energetic and a picnic seemed to be an ideal way to spend the day.

It was a good walk round the lake with plenty of chatter and ‘I remembers’. Jo and Jack held hands and watched their children together. The triplets had grown into fine women. Len had lost her harassed ‘got so much to do’ look and was happily laughing at something Con was telling her and Margot. Con was looking less fraught too, her Ph.D had been hard work combined with bringing up three children but now she had recovered her rosiness and the lightness was back in her step. Margot wasn’t the same creature, either, and had started to open up her ideas and talk about her future outside of the Order.
Jack turned to Joey, ‘Margot and Felix have been putting a proposition to me. Apparently there’s a practice going in a village not far from where we’ll be. They fancy taking it over and it would be a good use for some of that money we got from the San.’
‘Whatever you think, dear. It would be pleasant to have them close.’
They walked on in silence and Jack returned to contemplating his family. Erica and Cecily, as is so often the way with mothers, were telling Felicity everything she should know about having babies. Felicity didn’t look like she wanted to know, eventually putting her hands over her ears and shrieking ‘No more! I don’t want to know.’ At which the other two burst out laughing and changed the subject to the perfections of their own children and the necessity of being careful over name choices. The three looked fit and healthy, Cecil and Flix especially looking improved and Erica, well, she appeared to be little older than she was when he’d picked her up after the train crash. It was impossible that she should be thirty-five with four children of her own.
Adrienne, Phil and Ruey were discussing Phil’s engagement. Jack was interested to note that whenever she spoke of Ian, Phil’s voice softened in tone. It was only a slight change but it was enough for him to feel that Geoff needn’t worry, Phil was not quite so blasé as she pretended.
Felix was trying to have a conversation with Claire but it wasn’t going well. Claire’s exhibition had gone exceedingly well. Even the press had caught on and her pictures were valued by the establishment. When Jack and Jo had gone to see it opened, Claire had been herself. She hadn’t at that point lost her joie de vivre and was her usual, puppy-dog self. Jack wondered what had changed her. He didn’t think it was success or the mild celebrity status she’d gained for a couple of weeks. As far as he knew she hadn’t fallen out with any of the family. Even Cecil at her most moody hadn’t been this worrying.
He turned, again, to Joey, ‘Any idea what’s up with Claire? Not Geoff is it?’
‘No. Poor Geoff is just confused. He told me that it’s sunk in that she really is his sister, whether by birth or otherwise, and he’s sorry he ever could think otherwise. I heard Phil mentioning a Frenchman. Heloo Claire.’
‘Stop there you two I want a photo-Mamma don’t straighten your hair.’ She tutted, ‘Forget it, I’ll try again when you’re not looking.’

They arrived at the picnic spot and settled to eat. The breeze had faded and it was getting hot so they pushed into the shade to enjoy their sumptuous feast. They all fell on the food as if eating was going out of fashion and afterwards most were feeling sleepy but Phil, Claire and Felix were restless and suggested they walked back home and rowed over to pick up anyone who didn’t want to walk any further. Joey, who would never admit that her knees were aching, agreed that it sounded like a good idea; so the three set off whilst the rest unashamedly dozed.

‘Hi there you lot. It’s been two hours- shouldn’t you be stirring?’ The piles of clothing moved revealing the people within.
‘Gosh!’
‘C’mon Felix, give us a hand packing up.’
‘OK. Phil and Claire have stayed behind – decided it was getting too hot and they were going to have a dip before preparing tea with Anna.’
Swiftly the party gathered up its belongings. The boat would only safely carry six of them so while they were discussing just who would ride Ruey decided to go and look at some fungi growing at the foot of a tree.
‘Damn!’ She caught one of the straps of her sundress on a twig and couldn’t release herself. Jack heard and went to the rescue. On the way back it happened, Jack tripped over a tree root, grabbed at a branch and missed, landing with his leg caught under him. A split second later the family were gathered around him asking if he was alright. Len managed to keep her head , started dragging people back ‘Leave it to Felix and Margot’ and gradually they backed off, apart from the two doctors and Joey, who clutched at her husband’s hand.
‘My ankle!’ Jack was pale; his lips clenched together. His grip tightened on Jo’s hand as Felix straightened his leg Margot gently felt his ankle ‘I think it’s broken.’ She raised her voice ‘Can someone find something to use as a splint.’ Ruey was ahead of her and had already found a length of wood and a couple of the others gave up their belts to strap it. Felix, meantime, had been examining the rest of his father and was able to declare there were no further injuries apart from bruising.
Then came the problem of how to get Jack to the hospital everyone wished to support him but it was Len who, prompted by her mother, came up with the best solution.
‘We get Dad to the boat then Felix and Margot go with him. Erica and Con, as you are our best rowers, can get you across the quickest. Then one of you doctors can drive him to the hospital whilst the other attends to him. The rest of us can walk up to the road and someone can come and meet us and drive us home.’
Quickly the plan was put into action and carefully they carried Jack to the boat.
Later that evening Jack returned, struggling to manage his crutches, and the others fluttered around him. He went straight to his bed worn out by the pain, took a couple of aspirins and settled for the night.
The next morning Adrienne visited him to say good-bye but he seemed thoughtful and withdrawn so she made her visit short. Later, after Felix had helped him into a chair with his leg propped up, he sent for Erica who, sometime later, sent Joey to him.
‘Jo darling. This may come as a surprise – but I want to go home.’
‘No!’
‘I can’t amble round. You’ve already had to put of one expedition and if I’m not here you’ll be free.’
‘Jack Maynard! I can’t stand martyrs!’
‘Its not that Love. I want to go home to be with friends. All these young people are wearing me out. Our new place is diddy so I’ll have less problem getting about. I can make sure the place is ready for you. My shoulder isn’t going to respond well to using crutches.’
‘I should hope not. A shoulder on crutches!’ Joey reverted to humour to mask her dismay.
‘You know what I mean. I’ve spoken to Erica, she has a big fancy car I can relax in and is quite willing to transport me. This isn’t martyrdom Dear, it’s a longing for peace.’
Joey looked at him and smiled, ‘Yes I can see that my love. How about I pack you a small case and bring the rest when I come.’
‘Perfect. Now Woman, get me a cup of tea.’
‘Yes Sir!’ Joey wiped the tear from her face and went to compose herself before getting his tea.
Early next morning Erica left with Jack sitting in the back with his leg up. As she made her final round of good-byes she hugged Claire, ‘Darling do talk to someone – a trouble shared and all that – or write.’
‘I’ll think about it.’
To cheer themselves up the remaining family took the little train down to Spartz, where Joey reminisced and the others politely listened, though they could probably have told all the tales themselves – still it livened their mother up and they returned home determined to enjoy their last week.
At first Jo had worried that she should have gone with Jack but these feelings were eclipsed by the realisation that it would only be days until she would be parted from Anna. Roger and Roddy managed to brighten the house for a couple of days but it seemed that hardly had they arrived than they were leaving, taking Ruey with them.
The day after the Richardsons left, Claire put away her camera and dashed down to Innsbruck for a large prepared canvas. As soon as she was back she sat by the lake, blocking in a picture of Die Blumen with all the members of the family. She only came in as the light was fading.
‘Can we see please?’ asked Phil
‘Well, there’s not much there at the moment but you can look if you want. I can’t do anymore before we leave as it won’t dry. I just need to get the light right before going, the rest I’ll do from photos.’
Most of the family gave the canvas a cursory glance before agreeing that there wasn’t much to see however Joey bent over it for sometime identifying the blobs as different members of her family.
‘It’s going to be a wonderful family picture but where are you in it?’
‘I don’t do self portraits.’ Claire snapped.
‘But it should be of all of us- you’re family and mustn’t leave yourself out.’ Con joined the conversation.
‘Oh shut up! I’ll put this away before something happens to it.’ Brusquely Claire stood up, grabbed her stuff and rushed out before she could be stopped. She dropped her things on a hall table and sat in the corner stifling the sobs that shook her body. Anna coming in from a visit to her cousins almost fell over her.
‘Liebchen. Come with me, now.’ When Anna spoke in that tone it had more immediate effect than anything Matron could do. Anna led Claire into the kitchen and treated her as if she were twenty years younger. She wiped Claire’s face and then sat her on her lap. ‘Now little one, we are so worried about you. Tell Anna, she will make it better.’

Post subject:  Re: Turn the Full Circle- Updated 23/10/10

I'm a little concerned about this. Hope it makes sense and I hope I don't upset anyone

‘Anna I’m so confused,’ Again sobs threatened to stop her speaking.
‘Then you must tell. You’ve not thought it out for yourself so it is time to talk to another.’
Claire looked at her comforter and suddenly felt safe. Anna was part of the family but not a relative, perhaps she would understand. At last Claire was ready to tell her tale.
‘It started at the gallery. I never thought my work would cause such a furore. Critics praised it, photographers shot it and journalists gathered from far and wide. It was all a bit ridiculous really, I mean I’m barely out of art school.
‘I was determined I wouldn’t let it go to my head. After all, Mamma has her bit of fame and I’ve seen other young artists appear, be feted and disappear all in one season. Phil and Ian came down to view a couple of weeks after Mum and Dad and I was with them when the gallery manager told me that a young Frenchman had been asking for me and she’d promised to pass on his card. I just shoved it in my pocket thinking it was probably just another interview or possibly a commission and we went out for the evening. What we didn’t notice was the man following us and later in the evening as Ian and I were trying to keep Phil upright, he came up to me and said, “You are Marie-Claire. I will see you tomorrow at the cafe opposite the gallery- yes?” Well I was surprised at his use of my full name, I never use it and I couldn’t remember it having been used in any articles either, so my curiosity led me to meet him once my guests had gone.

‘I didn’t like him much; in fact I didn’t like him at all. I sat down opposite him and said “What do you want?”
“I am called Francois de la Roche and you are Marie-Claire de Mabillon.” I felt dizzy. Francois ordered coffee for us both completely neglecting to ask what I wanted- so I refused it and got myself a Coke. I don’t want some crazed guy determining my life. I repeated myself, “What do you want?”
“I just want to spend some time with my little cousin. I recall my Uncle Gaston a little and you have his smile. He was a wonderful man. I expect the Maynards did not tell you anything.” His lip curled as he said this.
“My parents told me everything.”
“Please don’t be so defensive little one. I am sorry I am not doing this so well. My mother told me to be gentle.”
“Why are you doing this now?”
“Because we finally find you because you come famous.” I didn’t know what to make of the situation. We met a couple more times and he was very courteous but there was something.. what’s the word..something sneaky behind it all. He invited me to France to meet my aunt, kept stressing that blood will tell. I haven’t said I’ll visit, most of me doesn’t want to. I spoke to his mother on the phone. It was weird and I don’t know.’ Claire faltered to silence.

‘So little one what is the real problem? Making a decision is easy- yes or no. Yes I’m interested or No I don’t like you.’
‘I feel like I’m keeping secrets but to speak will make me feel a traitor to Mamma. All of you have been my family all my life but suddenly I have started questioning it. Would you have taken me in if you hadn’t have had to? Why was I kept away from my other family? Have I even got a family? It’s all muddled up- I hate the de la Roches does that make me horrible too? What would life have been like if I’d gone with them? Do you know they’ve even suggested that I sign my work de Mabillon- I’m not doing that! His mother even asked about how expensive my works are! Anna, I’m lost, what is family?’
‘Claire listen to me. Take these questions to your Mamma though I will answer some as well as I can. Only you can decide who your family is but I tell you this,’ Anna’s voice became louder and more forceful, ‘You are not horrible. This family is a good family and by example we are good too. I will try to explain what family is for me. There are two things that tell me who are my family – my head and my heart. My head tells me that my blood relatives are family; my heart chooses my 'real' family. I have lots of head family, some I love, some I don’t and a few I do not want to be associated with. My nephew Hans is one such with his wife in Briesau and his girlfriend in Spartz. I have to admit he is related to me – but he is not family.
‘Now you are not related to me in that way but my heart would break if any of you behaved in that way. I would cry, tell you off, admonish you because I love you and I choose you as family.
‘Little Claire, you must decide how you want to choose your family with your head or with your heart. Tell your Mamma these questions you have. She will understand, she and your father spoke about these things when you were very small as they thought this day might come.’ Anna finished the talk the by standing up to make cocoa for all, leaving two cups full on the kitchen table she took the rest to the Saal. On meeting Joey in the hall she sent her to the kitchen where Claire having broken her silence was finally able to unburden herself to her mother.

Thanks for the encouraging comments. Sorry but I went all EBDish and we don't see what Jo said to Cecily. This is the penultimate episode.

The final two days were riotous affairs with lots of packing and rejoicings about returning home. Claire was relaxed and friendly, she knew she still had to decide what to do but was sure of the Maynard’s support and unconditional love. Joey and Anna spent so much time together that Margot declared that they were probably spending the nights sitting by each others’ bedsides.
Suddenly, as so often happens at the end of holidays, it was the last morning. The cars were packed and ready to go. Anna, Jo and Cecily waved good-bye to the others and then Cecily went to wait in Jo’s car.
‘This is it then Anna.’
‘Yes Jo’
‘I’ll come and visit whenever I can. I’ll write too.’’
‘Please do.’
‘We’ve been through a lot together. I’m going to miss you so much. You’ve been my rock for so long.’
‘I shall miss you too. I wish it didn’t have to be so.’
Joey wiped her tears with the back of her hand and the two hugged.
‘Our memories will always unite us,’ said Anna.
‘Yes.’ One last hug and Jo rushed to the car.
‘On to the next adventure then.’ Her voice was trying to sound cheerful but she saw very little as Cecily started the long drive home.

Jack was delighted to see his wife again. She drew the car up in front of the Cotswold stone house and saw him waving at her through the window of the annex that was now theirs. The annex was smaller than anywhere they had lived before but it was perfect for the two of them. From the main house, Dick came to help with the luggage and to give an invitation to join him and Madge for tea.

Later in the main house, Dick and Madge showed her around before settling in the downstairs drawing room which was made welcoming by the large open fireplace. As Madge poured the tea, Dick said ‘We only use two of the four bedrooms and there’s a mini flat in the attic so we’ve plenty of room for the number of guests we want at our age.’ Joey's response was a smile.‘Yes, the youthful are tiring aren’t they?’

‘One thing strikes me,’ said Dick as they sat on the comfy sofas with crumpets dripping with butter, ‘We’re back where we started- the three of us together.’
‘You mustn’t forget Jack- but we do seem to have turned a full circle. It’s been an interesting circle though and sometimes more than a little exciting.’
The three settled back in their chairs, thinking over times past, good and bad.
‘It’s not been boring, has it?’

Thank-you very much for sticking with this. I originally meant this to end in December so apologise for early Christmas.

Afterword

On Christmas Eve Jack was unashamedly dozing behind his newspaper when someone rang the doorbell. ‘Can you get that, please. I’m kind of busy.’
Jack groaned as he clambered to his feet, he’d never had enough sympathy for Anna, but went to do as asked.
‘Hi Dad.’ Claire stepped in from the rain and hugged her father, ‘I thought I’d come on a surprise visit. Where’s Mamma?’
‘Kitchen’ he grunted and still half asleep led her away from the cold to the warmth of the drawing room. Claire laid a parcel on the table and went to find her mother. Jo was standing in front of the washing machine, a bemused expression on her face, holding one of Jack’s shirts.
‘Hello sweetie. Look at what I’ve done? Your father’s going to kill me.’ She held up the shirt and Claire burst out laughing ‘Honestly Mum, I can’t see Dad wearing pink. Unfortunately you’re stuck with it.’ Jo joined in the laugh.
‘I’ll not forget that red lining again, you can be sure of that.’
‘Give it to me, I need a new smock but now come through Mum. I know it’s not Christmas till tomorrow but I wanted to give you this when you were on your own.’
Claire presented her package to her parents and watched tensely as they opened it.
‘Claire! It’s wonderful!’
There was the painting of Die Blumen, framed and ready to hang.
Jo looked at it, recognising Claire’s achievement. She had depicted the whole family in various relaxed poses, forming natural groups around the front of the house. Her talent showed in the way just a couple of brushstrokes caught each person’s individuality. Then Jo embraced her daughter and surreptitiously wiped her eyes. In the middle of the characters, looking straight out of the canvas, wearing a big smile, Claire had painted herself.
At the bottom of the frame a simple etched label read
MY FAMILY by Claire Maynard

Thank-you all for your encouraging comments.
Sorry Fiona, no plans at the moment for continuing with Claire's story, that PB hasn't visited yet.

Welcome to the board Leonie, a special thanks for your message as I was having a very gray day and that brightened it considerably.
