My first drabble! Here goes.....!

Con Maynard let herself into her flat with a sigh of relief. She had been working away for the weekend as part of her job at the newspaper offices where she had worked since graduating almost three years ago now and was glad to get home. With a weary sigh she dropped her bags in the hall and checked the answer machine for messages.

Bleep...... “Con? It’s Felicity....... I’ll ....... I’ll try you again later...... Bye.”

Con sighed again. Her younger sister had been in trouble throughout the previous term, and she always seemed to appeal to Con to take her side against whoever she was in trouble with.
“Who’s she upset this time?” Con wondered as the second message clicked on.

Bleep....... “Con? It’s Len. Phone me as soon as you get this please! It’s important”

Con sat down in the chair next to the phone. Her triplet’s voice sounded panicky.

Bleep.... “Con? It’s Margot. Phone me!”

Now Con began to feel a bit scared herself. Her younger triplet sounded more alarmed than Len had. The only question now was who to phone first. Con’s dilemma was solved by the ringing of the phone. She kicked off her shoes as she picked up the receiver.
“Hello?”
“Oh Con! Thank goodness you’re home!”
It was Len. Con sat back in her chair and inwardly sighed as she asked. “What’s happened?”
“Felicity’s missing!” was the tense reply. “No one has seen her since fruhstuck yesterday. Papa organised search parties throughout the platz last night, and some of the staff have gone down to Interlaken today in case the little ass has got that far. Mamma suggested I rang you and Margot in case Felicity had tried to contact either of you.”
“There was a message from her just before your message but she only said she’ll call again later. I’ll let you know as soon as she does. Has Margot heard anything yet?”
“No, nothing. Oh – I’d better go, there’s someone at the door. I’ll phone you as soon as there’s news.”
She hung up on the last word and Con decided her next move would be to phone Margot herself.

Meanwhile, Margot was sitting in her flat in Edinburgh wondering what to do. She knew what she ought to do in such situations, but a part of her couldn’t resist the tear-stained face sitting opposite her.
Two hours ago, she had returned from a busy shift at the hospital, including a lunch-hour spent helping the local parish priest with visits to elderly parishioners, to find a familiar blond sixteen year old sitting on her doorstep.
“Flixy! What are you doing here? You should be in school! How on earth did you get all the way here?” she exclaimed.
The younger girls stood up and brushed away her tears with a grimy hand. “Oh Margot, please help me! I’ve run away!”
Margot unlocked her door and went in, pushing her sister in front of her. She sent Felicity through to the bathroom to wash her face and made a hasty phone call to Can. Unfortunately, as she heard the machine click on Margot remembered her sister was away. It was up to Margot herself to deal with the situation. She went to the kitchen and made two cups of tea. She carried them through to the pretty sitting room where Felicity sat waiting for her.
“Margot, please don’t send me back! Please! I’ll run away again!” She begged.
Something in that pitiful appeal reminded Margot of herself at that age. She took a deep breath and said “Why don’t you tell me all about it?”

Post subject:  Re: Trouble for Felicity

Thanks for all your positive comments so far! :) Now for Felicitiy's story...

Felicity was singing to herself as she got changed for the evening ahead. She glanced out over the gardens and the pine trees to the mountains beyond where the setting sun cast a rosy glow. She was Dormitory Prefect of Daffodil this year and so far had enjoyed the role, and especially the privileges that came along with it, including the window cubicle with the view she loved. Yes, she thought to herself, school is certainly better this term.

Once she was changed, Felicity made sure the rest of her dormitory were ready and followed them downstairs. As she arrived in the senior common room her great friends grabbed her.
“Felicity! What are the plans for this evening? The Pres are being so annoyingly knowing! Has Jack said anything to you?” Lucy Peters demanded
Felicity flushed, “No, why should she?”
Jean Morris smiled, “Well, we all know how friendly you two are! We just thought she may have confided in you.”
Felicity was saved from answering by the sounding of the gong and the girls made haste to line up and make their way into hall. Each Saturday different forms were responsible for the entertainment, which usually took the form of tableaux, paper games or dancing. This Saturday, it was the turn of the prefects, and those grand ladies had been very secretive as to their plans.

Meanwhile, the prefects were awaiting their guests with anticipation. They had chosen to have an indoor gymkhana, with various games, leading up to a final race.
“The gong has sounded so everyone’s coming. Do you all know what you’re doing?” demanded Jack Lambert, the Head girl. She was feeling very self-conscious as the idea behind their entertainment had been completely hers, and she was unsure how the rest of the school would taker to it.
“Of course, Jack, we’ve been through everything plenty of times” soothed her great pal, Wanda von Eschenau.

The school as a whole began filing into hall just then, so Jack went to stand on the dais. Once everyone was in, she explained how the evening was to be sorted. Each form would take part in three activities either in hall itself or around the school, and the winners of each would come back to hall for the grand finale.

Felicity, Lucy and Jean and the rest of their form found themselves being taken along to their form room to partake in their first activity by the Head Girl herself. This involved a series of photographs taken at random angles. Jack informed the horrified listeners they had five minutes to identify the subject of the photograph and its location.

When the time was up, Jack collected their papers and checked their answers. Then she smiled as she announced, “Well done Flixy, you got them all right!”
Felicity flushed with pleasure and Jack told them to move on to Lower V’s form room for their next challenge of threading as many needles as they could in an allotted time. As Felicity followed her friends, Jack called her back.
“I say, you did well with that! I never expected anyone to score top marks – might have know you’d do it though!” She said with her characteristic cheeky grin
“Thanks” Felicity felt her face turning red to the roots of her blonde hair at such praise from Jack. She had idolised Jack for many years before when she had been a shy junior, and Jack herself had been a middle, much to the amusement of Felicity’s eldest sister, Len as Jack had idolised Len when she had been at school.
Just then, they grew aware of the sound of footsteps on the corridor
“I-I’d better go.” Felicity stammered, and she suited the action to the words, leaving Jack to get organised for the next group, and thinking all the while about her younger friend. Their friendship had grown over the past few years, and the two now shared a close friendship, despite the differences in their ages, for Felicity had only just turned 16 while Jack was almost 19 and due to leave school at the end of that term. For the past few terms, Jack knew how she felt about Felicity. The question was would the younger girl feel the same, and if she did what then?

Post subject:  Re: Trouble for Felicity

Next bit....! :D

It was a few days later that Jack found her chance to talk to Felicity. It had been unbearably hot all week, and consequently the girls were kept outside as much as possible. The Prefects evening had been declared a unanimous success and now the Lower Sixth were hastily trying to work out how they could arrange their own evening entertainment to rival the previous one.
That afternoon, the Head had declared that all students should rest in the shade as much as possible for a few hours in the hottest part of the day and lessons would commence later than usual. Felicity, with lots on her mind, declined the offer of going to the rockery with Lucy and Jean, and instead sought out an old hidey-hole of hers, in the wide hedge between the school and Freudesheim. She knew that she could get completely under the hedge and no one would be able to see her, and therefore disrupt her thoughts.
The previous few years had been a rocky one for Felicity. She had missed her elder sisters far more than perhaps anyone had guessed. She resented being the eldest Maynard in school, along with the extra baby-sitting duties for the younger children during the holidays when Len, Con and Margot had stayed in England. Feeling out of sorts at home had affected her concentration in class, resulting in Felicity being kept down in Inter V while Lucy and Jean had both made Upper V at the start of the previous term. This had only compounded her misery and the term had been an unbearably hard one. She had eventually written to Con, in the hope her sister could help her “sort her head out”. She had chosen Con as being the most likely to help; Len as eldest had returned to the Platz and was now teaching at the school, and therefore was unapproachable so far as the young rebel was concerned. Margot was far away in Edinburgh working hard as a trainee doctor, and Felicity knew the youngest triplet didn’t get much time for letter-writing.
However, this term, things had improved. First Felicity had been promoted to Upper V, with her friends once again, and then she had found herself a Dormitory Prefect, another sign that the staff had faith she could be responsible. Mindful of Con’s advice to “keep her head down”, she had played up to this responsibility so far and to quote herself “things had quietened down” and the term so far had been a good one for Felicity. Her friendship with the Head girl had been smiled upon from all angles, and Felicity now couldn’t imagine school without Jack. “She’s always there when I need her..... She’s just so solidly comforting when I need help!”
Felicity was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t hear the quiet footsteps approaching.
“Penny for them?”
Felicity jumped violently. She looked up and saw Jack Lambert grinning down at her. “Mind if I join you?” Jack asked as she sat down.
Felicity wriggled over to make room but made no comment. Felicity blushed at the object of her thoughts arriving so suddenly, and Jack, now she was here, didn’t know how to begin. They sat in silence for a moment, both unsure of what to say. Finally Jack spoke.
“I’ve been meaning to talk with you for a while. You know I leave this summer -.” she began hesitantly.
“I’ll miss you so much!” Felicity burst out.
Jack turned with amazement to look at Felicity. What she saw in the steady blue eyes made her heart leap with a joy she had never before experienced. With a rush of emotion she drew the younger girl closer to her and hugged her tightly.
“Don’t worry! Everything will work out” She said with more courage than she was feeling.

That afternoon, Felicity took her seat in her form room with no comment to any of her friends. She sat throughout the lessons with her mind firmly elsewhere, and Miss Wilmot inwardly groaned as she thought Felicity had returned to her behaviour of the previous term. Felicity tried her hardest to concentrate, but her mind was whirling with a jumble of thoughts and feelings.
The final lesson before Kaffee und Kuchen was a scripture lesson with no less a person than Miss Annersley and Felicity knew she wouldn’t be able to give it her full concentration so as soon as the Head swept into the room Felicity approached her and said “Please may I go to Matron, Miss Annersley, I have a headache.”
The Headmistress looked keenly at her pupil and noted the shadows under her eyes and gave permission at once.
Felicity duly reported herself to Matron who advised bed for the afternoon and bustled off as she was very busy. She would check on Felicity later.
Felicity made her way to her dormitory where she undressed and lay down on her bed. There was a slight breeze coming through the open windows and the quiet solitude was a blessing. Lying in the quietness, Felicity began to piece her thoughts together. Everything she was feeling felt so right, but at the same time, so wrong. Jack had tried to reassure her earlier when they had talked for almost an hour, but Felicity felt as though her whole life had been turned upside down. All she knew for certain was that she loved Jack and Jack loved her. She was scared too. What would everyone say? Mamma, she was sure would react badly. Papa would retreat into his work. Her siblings may be supportive; after all, the triplets were making their own lives now, especially Con and Margot. Her friends wouldn’t understand – even Felicity herself didn’t understand her feelings so how could anyone else?
At this point, feeling alone and somehow different from everyone else she had known for years, Felicity gave way to tears.

As the school assembled for Kaffee und Kuchen in the Speisesaal, Jack Lambert was looking round anxiously. She too had had a lot on her mind since her talk with Felicity. She had fared better than the younger girl, as she had had a free period in the library, although she had completed little of the essay she was supposed to be working on. As she was the eldest, she felt responsible for supporting Felicity and helping her accept the new situation in which they found themselves. Jack had been certain of her feelings for a few months and had had time to accept it. Now she watched Upper V arrive, but didn’t see Felicity, so as soon as she could she left her post at one of the urns and approached Lucy and Jean.
“Where’s Felicity?”
“In bed, I guess. She had a headache this afternoon and the Abbess sent her to Matron.” Lucy informed her.
Jack thanked her and moved away, thinking hard. She had to see Felicity, to check she was ok. In strict defiance of rules, the Head Girl left the speisesaal and headed up the stairs towards Daffodil Dormitory. She silently opened the door, praying Matron was nowhere near, and crept in. Felicity sat up as she saw who it was.
“Jack! What are you doing here?” she demanded.
“Shh! Idiot! I shouldn’t be here! I just came to see you to see if you were ok? I was worried about you when you didn’t come to Kaffee.”
She sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled Felicity close to her.
“I couldn’t concentrate in lessons, so I told the Abbess I had a headache and came up here to think.” Felicity confessed.
“You – you haven’t changed your mind?” Jack asked shakily.
“Oh no! That’s the only thing I’m certain of! I love you Jack.” The younger girl pulled the other towards her for a kiss.

They were both so wrapped up in their own emotions they never heard footsteps along the corridor until it was too late.

This is really great - looking forward to more! I always wondered what would happen if one of them turned out gay. My bet was on Charles!

Hope Jack isn't in too much trouble.

When my mother discovered my sister was gay she made a lot of disgusted and righteous noises about my 'innocent' sister having been 'corrupted' by an older woman. There were threats about court action in there as well, until I pointed out my sister was over the age of consent. Then there was the threatening to throw herself over the local town bridge, and the 'don't you tell your father it will kill him' (He was a LOT more Christian and kind and sympathetic when he eventually did find out!) And there was the trying to get the local priest involved (and he was a nasty little pervert who'd tried it on with me when I was a teenager: of course I never dared to tell my mother 'cos it would inevitably have been my fault.)

What else? Too many small unpleasant ways of getting at my sister, refusing to speak to or recognise her partner, moaning about how much face she'd lose in a town where she was well known if my sister came out . . .

My sister lives in Australia now. Things are still difficult even tho' my brother and I support her wholeheartedly. She still feels she can't come home.

“- So now you know why I had to run away, Margot! Jack leaves school anyway in two weeks, and I don’t know what will happen then. Mamma and Papa may never speak to me again! When Matey reported us, Auntie Hilda said I must be honest with them but I couldn’t face that yet! She’s probably told them herself now. It’s so unfair! Why must I love Jack? Mamma expects us all to ‘settle down’ with a nice doctor or someone equally boring! I’m sure she will never understand.”
“But Flixy, how in the world did you get here?”
“I waited until the others went for their walk after fruhstuck, and I slipped away then. I was terrified I’d get caught until I got to Interlaken. I’d borrowed the money from Jack for my ticket – she didn’t know why I needed it! I headed for you because I thought you might understand since you used to do mad things when you were younger! I can’t talk to Len; she’s too close to Mamma. I tried to phone Con but there was no answer, and then I remembered she’d said in her last letter she was working away, so I came here. I only had enough money to get to London, so I had to just hope the guard didn’t come along on the train on the way here!”
Margot nodded gravely. When she had asked her sister to tell her the tale, it is fair to say this was the last thing she had expected. She stood up and went over to the window, thinking hard. She could understand the worry that everyone on the Platz must be going through, although she could see why Felicity had acted the way she had.
“First things first, Felicity. Yes, I’ll help you. However, we have to let them know you are safe.” She said decisively.
Felicity’s eyes were filled with fear as she nodded, but she knew Margot would support her, whatever happened. Margot took a deep breath and dialled a familiar number.
“Con? It’s me. Felicity is here.”

Post subject:  Re: Trouble for Felicity

She has many sterling qualities, Lesley, and is a very good teacher:she has helped more children with difficulties in learning to read and write than I've had hot dinners. There are many children over a long career who owe their literacy and numeracy to her.

Unfortunately compassion and tolerance are not among those sterling qualities when it comes to homosexuality. My father is a gentle, kind man, who grieves for my sister every day - not because she is gay. Although he, as a devout Catholic conversus (my mother is a cradle Catholic) technically does not approve of homosexuality, he would never distance, abandon, or not welcome one of his children. Every time we meet as a family without her, he talks about her and wishes she was with us. I know that one of his greatest fears is that he will die without having seen her in the last two or three years . . .

So this drabble really resonates for me. Jack is a cradle Catholic, like my mother; Joey a conversus, like my father. Felicity's situation is my sister's - she told me, told my mother, and ran, leaving me to pick up the pieces and deal with the threats of suicide and the ranting about evil, corrupting older women and the absolute folly of having sent us to an all girls school.

Now my daughters are 18 and 14 and go to an all girls school, my mother is urgent with me to encourage them to go out and find boyfriends - to prove they are not gay!

I've made my peace with the situation - but it was a hard won peace. My sister can't, which is one reason she lives half the world away.

Glad you’ve enjoyed this drabble... here’s the final post!

Two days later, Felicity found herself back in the study at the school, seated in the middle of Margot and Con, who had joined them en route to add her support once she heard her sister’s story. Opposite sat their parents; Jo was inclined to be tearful and kept glancing across at Felicity as if she expected her to disappear again. Jack’s expression was unreadable, although Felicity shivered slightly as she remembered his anger the night before. When they had arrived back at Freudesheim the previous evening, Joey and Jack had spent a long time talking with their fourth daughter about the situation they had found themselves in. Joey had been relieved that her fourth daughter was home safely, and she had persuaded Jack to calm down eventually. Joey had promised that although she didn’t understand her daughter’s feelings she would listen and support her. The final member of the group was Miss Annersley.
“Felicity, why did you feel you had to run away?” Miss Annersley asked softly, concern in her grey eyes.
Felicity looked up and gulped. Margot reached for her hand, and Con gave her a wink for support. “I- I’m sorry. I’ve left you all down, but please, is Jack all right?”
“She has, naturally, been very concerned over your whereabouts”
Felicity dropped her head in shame and her cheeks burned. “I’m sorry.”
“So you said before. I think, Felicity, this has been a severe lesson to you. In future, please don’t feel that you cannot talk to someone. Con and Margot have supported you fully, as I would have done should you have not gone off as you did.” Her Headmistress told her. “Of course, you have to be punished for going off as you did. For the rest of this term you will sleep in san and you will be supervised by a member of staff at all times. Naturally, until she leaves at the end of term, you should stay away from Jack unless absolutely necessary. After that we’ll say no more unless such behaviour should occur again in school. You may go to your form room.”
“Thank you Miss Annersley.”
Felicity’s eyes filled once more with tears. She had been convinced that they would have expelled both her and Jack at the very least. To be merely punished for running away was almost more than she could take. She bobbed her curtsey and left the room, her mind more settled than over the past few days. made her way to her form room, feeling unexpectedly calm and looking forward to the future.

THE END

This has been a great drabble; just a pity there isn't going to be more of it. It's been very interesting and plausible!

Thanks Sarah. Very thought-provoking and plausible. Would like to see more of how this works out in a sequel, if that is possible.

Artemis, I really feel for your family and especially your sister and your father. I pray that somehow there will be reconciliation between your parents and your sister before they die, although from what you say, that seems very unlikely at the moment.

Glad Hilda, Con, Margot and Joey were able to understand and be supportive and hopefully Jack will come round in time. Thanks Sarah - this has been really interesting!

I like that, not all solved but at least no major recriminations at the school - can understand Miss A's response re no contact with Jack (Lambert) but like that she emphasised it was only until jack left school. Sounds as though Felicity's parents may take a while longer.

Thanks Sarah.

((((Artemis)))) Horrible situation for you - do you see/keep in contact with your sister? Could your Father not go to see her on his own? Or would the atmosphere at home not allow it?

Thanks Sarah. Echoing everyone else in saying that I would like to see some sort of sequel, maybe a few years down the track and Felicity has also left school.

That was a wonderful drabble, and I love the positive but not overly so ending... room for a sequel? Please?

Sarah, that was a great drabble, and I too see that there would be room for a sequel. (And would love to see one) I hope my comments about my own situation did not in any way put you off, or make you think it should be shorter or anything. I promise if you do another one i won't comment if they did do that! :) It was very interesting to see the sort-of-but-not-quite positive ending. I wonder if Matey and Hilda have just tried to persuade Joey and Jack that it's a 'phase' Felicity is going through, and they hope she will grow out of it. As if by making it a girly crush they can hope it will go away.

A few years down the line would be very good.

I am so touched by the kind comments, thank you very much. My younger brother and I keep in close contact, as do my children, and I also have contact with my sister's partner, as do my children: to us, even at a distance, she is family because she is my sister's significant other. Unfortunately, my sister's inability to deal with my mother puts enormous strain on her relationship. My sister and her partner were invited to my brother's wedding three years ago, but they decided that it would cause too much trouble if my sister's partner came . . .

I also pray that my sister can see my father more often. They do skype, but it's not the same. Also my sister's work takes her into some dangerous bits of the globe, so there are issues there too. My mother would never allow my father to go on his own. I wish he would tho' . . .

I've come to realise that of all the sins there are, lack of charity, understanding, kindness, love, call it what you will, is the most damaging.

Oh dear, sorry to be so sombre!. Sarah - it was a great drabble: do please write some more!

Thank you Sarah - that was lovely. Would also like a sequel to this if possible, fully understand why Felicity couldn't go to Len if she was teacing at the CS at the time
