Irritating plot bunny presented me with this one as I was falling asleep last night... They came for him last night. I have seen them take others. They took people I didn't know, people I had seen in the street, and old, dear friends like Onkle Florian. Kurt spoke of how Friedel was taken in Salzburg. I cried for Onkle Florian, I cried for Friedel. I cried for Tante Gisel, and for Wanda, and Gisela and Maria, losing their families to this awful regieme. I knew they came for others who spoke out against the government, who spoke out for Austria. One hears such rumours, and prays that they are lies. I never thought they'd come for Herr Doktor Von Ahlen. I can't cry for myself. He spoke to me two days ago. He said that he had been indiscreet, he was suspected, he had to leave. We were beside the Inn and the water was rushing past. It's high after the rainfall we've had over the past few weeks, and it was noisy. It almost drowned him out. He told me he wanted to speak to Papa about me, to ask if we might be betrothed, and then I could have gone with him. He wanted to go that night. I asked for some time to think, for time to be sure. I had no idea that there was no time. But then Kurt came, and told us about Friedel, and I still didn't believe it was so urgent. I didn't give him his answer, didn't see him yesterday, didn't meet him as we arranged. They had taken Friedel, surely they wouldn't take another that I knew, not so soon. I had time. Time to think, time to realise that it would mean leaving my city, my country, my family, and going away into the unknown. I might never see them again. Could I give it all up for Herr Doktor Von Ahlen? And then they came for him last night. In my minds' eye I can hear the sound of their boots on the street and on the stairs, the knock at the door, the shouts - the German accent sounds harsh here, so different from the Tirolean people - I picture him struggling, being hurt, being taken away like the rest. He didn't deserve to be taken. He is a doctor, he is a good man, he helps people. I heard the news this morning. Gertlieb heard from her sister before breakfast, and as soon as she told me I knew. It was my fault, if I had only been faster, if I had only realised earlier. What was Austria, or Innsbruck, beside him? I would miss my family, but Kurt sent Bernhilda and the children out of the country before the Anschluss, and Gottfried went just after. I could have stopped it, I could have saved him if I had only given my answer before. They came for him last night. They came for my Bruno. Will I ever see him again? |

Oh poor Frieda, and poor Bruno! Makes you wonder how many people were lost because they hesitated, not wanting to believe that the worst can happen. |
