My entry for Bedtimes Drabbles at a recent Gather

She ran her fingers through her hair looked at the details for the writers’ conference again. A quiet restful weekend where she could network and hone her craft, if she was lucky there might even be time to finish knitting the last few rows of her lime green and cream socks, her favourite colours. She decided in her wisdom to diversify from the usual form of her writing and thought this weekend away might help her to tighten up her writing style. After all, if she wanted to be published by a leading girl's own revival publishers then she had to learn to write in a style that they approved of. And they were very strict, she had heard of others who were very talented who had been disregarded unfairly. And she herself wasn’t particularly talented. Yes, a weekend away with others who were like-minded would definitely help her writing style. According to the details on the society website, it was meant to be a good weekend with lots of literary activities including ongoing story writing and a session on writing book reviews. It was bound to be helpful. In fact there was even a writing competition with criteria that have been decided by the eminent committee were running the weekend. She'd written it down on the back of envelope this criteria and was using the envelope as the bookmark in her latest book and retrieved it quickly, losing her place in ‘ Six Cousins and Mistletoe Farm’ by Enid Blyton, her idol as she did so.

She looked at the criteria, with eyes that had always needed glasses and frowned. Criteria one, no larger than 12 font and one A4 page, that was easy enough, she’d just fix the margins so they were as narrow as they could possibly be without chopping off words at the end. Criteria two was the must not include list. St Mildred's themes whatever they were. Anything to raunchy she thought possibly, so that was her idea to emulate Mills and Boon out of the question. Also must not include any other conference delegates, that was easy enough she had no idea who was going. Joey was also on the vetoed list, that wasn't too hard to avoid as she couldn't stand her anyway. Must include a doctor. Well of course it must it’s a girls own book. Honestly did these people think she was an idiot. Right, now to write the blessed thing. It was anonymous too so that helped her nerves, especially as if it was ill received she could just deny it was hers and claim she’d never written one, blaming her lack of confidence or writing flair if necessary, whilst being able to take all the credit if it was a runaway success.

ENTRY

A new girl had started at the school. She was called Gladys but want to be known as Len, which didn't go down very well with Len Maynard. But in fact it made her very popular with staff and girls alike who thought Len needed to be taken down a step or two. The staff had first said she had to be called Gladys but then relented when someone pointed out the history with Robin, Polly, Ruey and countless others, not to mention She Who Cannot Be Named. After a few disastrous weeks where Gladys ran away up a mountain, cut off her pigtail and fell into a lake after burning her petticoat; she seemed to settle down after a good telling off from Miss Annersley (which I cannot be bothered to write) and tea at Freudesheim where when bathing the babies she was spell bound by her hostess. (I wonder if Freudesheim has anything to do with S|igmund? Sorry a slight aside.) However, this calm period was not to last as Gladys, I mean Len seemed to be infatuated by the doctors and developed a catalogue of injuries and near death experiences which needed the doctors close and intense attention. She worked her way through Dr’s Jem and Jack, Eigen and Phil, Hunter and Erkhardt as well as James Talbot and various specialists and locums without much success, afterall this wasn’t Mills and Boon, it was meant to be nearer Enid Blyton. She had a starring role in the pantomime (which I shall Google for later) and at the end of term she vanished into the ether as most new girls in the later books are known to do after having the dubious honour of a book named after her. The Naughtiest Girl At the Chalet School.
