This little piece was written last year as a birthday gift for someone on the board. Maybe it's time to share it. The last section was part of a drabble challenge and that gave me the idea for the rest.

The journey

Setting out…..

The mother cuddles her tiny baby daughter, smiling gently down into the sleepy blue-grey eyes. After years of living with a distant, austere husband who has more time for his Church than for her, and with sons who shrugged off her tenderness for them once babyhood was over, it brings tears to her eyes to have a daughter on whom she can lavish all the love she holds within.

We will have such happy times, my sweet Hilda. I will teach you to dance and to sing, to laugh and to love. Together we will find the beauty in small everyday things but also weave fairy magic around us as we read of imaginary worlds. I will unfold to you the loving immensity of God - and teach you, with His help, to face the world always with a smile and with something to give. I shall pray for a man who will cherish you as I do, and I shall weep for joy at your wedding, for you will be so beautiful.

She cradles the baby close to her heart, this child who has come to ease her long loneliness.

…..On the way…..

Nell looks with on her friend with deep affection as the latter stands to welcome the Old Girls, present students and invited guests gathered together on the occasion of the school’s Coming of Age. How self-possessed she is, always knowing exactly the right thing to say or do, always captivating her audience, always with the gentle smile that
touches one’s heart.

Surely fairies danced at your birth, my Hilda, and poured all their richest gifts on you. Surely your mother smiles down proudly on her beloved child. You have faced triumph and disaster with the same equanimity, your faith in God never faltering, the light of love always shining in your eyes.

How lonely my years would have been without you, dear heart. You are so much a part of me now that I could never imagine a life without you, though one day I may have to journey on alone. You have truly become my joy.

Hilda’s quiet, steady eyes meet hers and Nell knows, with utter confidence, how much she herself is loved and needed.

……Arrival

“Let me go, my love. I’ll be free, as a bird, as the wind. Free to be me again, without the pain.” Tear-filled, broken-hearted grey eyes cling to hers.

How to help her? She will be so bereft without me. But she is strong; she will survive the time left to her.

Her rich voice reassures this dearest of friends. “My darling, I will still be very close, adding colour to your day and sparkle to your dreams. Cherish the memories, Nell.”

She smiles gently as the light fades; all that remains is the beloved voice bidding her farewell. Then - the light is gone, the voice disappears and she soars free, unfettered!

Oh, Nell, if only you knew...... One day very soon this will be yours as well. We will soar together and never be apart again.

Other beloved voices bid her welcome into a soft and golden light. Arms that once she knew hold her close, cherishing her. She is home and all is well…….

A beautiful and very touching description of unconditional love - in turns protective, proud and understanding.

For some reason, the last section reminded me of the lines in I Vow to Thee, my country:

The love that never questions, the love that pays the price
The love that makes, undaunted, the final sacrifice

Thank you, Mary.

Hilda has 'eased the long loneliness' and made life warm and fulfilling for both her mother and Nell. The last section where she is released to find freedom and love which will never fade or falter is particularly moving. Thank you, Mary.

That was very beautiful and epitomised so much of the love with which Hilda was gifted in her life - and that culminates in her final freedom and arrival..
