Claire sat on her trunk, watching the beautiful sunset out of her dormy window. Tomorrow she was going back home, which was a ridiculous thought, after all, it was only next door.
She got her little diary she always carried around with her. It was more of a holiday journal than anything else. She wrote in it.
Dear Diary,
It's the holidays tomorrow again. I wonder if anyone will actually notice me for once. Last holiday I had to survive on scraps and food I cooked myself. Even Len doesn't see me at home or her place any more, thankfully. School is where I'm happiest. People notice me. Felicity is at ballet school so she doesn't tell me what to do all the time. Phil, who has taken to eating polos recently, is happily engrossed in school issues and her own friends. Cecily is always reading on Chemistry and that stuff. I prefer my needlework, and I'm going to work in Sybils shop. Auntie Phoebe regularily sends her needlework there, and Sybil wrote about me joining as soon as I'm old enough. I'd love to, and I will. Mamma and Papa may have made us exactly how Mamma wants, but I'm different. Even Ruey did what was wormed into her head by Mamma.

There is more... running around my brain.

When the post came the next morning, Claire looked through it so it wouldn't be put aside for anything else. She had a letter from Sybil.

Claire,
Don't let being forgotten get you down. Don't ask for attention either. Live your life as it should be filled.
The difference with you and the rest is that you weren't modelled by your mother, like the rest of them, although they do break free from her models and settle doing something else. Con is a famous author, but not on school stories and historical things like your mother intended. Margot never became a nun. Len is divorcing Reg, you said, so she's not going the way your mother intended. As soon as they're away from your mother her modelling breaks. When Phil had a holiday here she didn't have an illness at all, but back with your mother and there's all the problems. Even the adoptees were JMB-made, only you weren't modelled, partially because she didn't expect to adopt you and then never had plans made for you.
All the best from your cousin
Sybil.

"What are you doing?"
Claire turned to look into the face of her older "sister" Felicity.
"Mind your own business," Claire said.
"Oh, go back to your room and get up properly,"
"I've already got up. Unlike yourself,"
Felicity looked at herself in fluffy slippers and a white dressing-gown.
"Why should I listen to the forgotten one?"
"Because the forgotten one is being calm talking to the girl in front of her who prides herself on her appearance," Claire said.
Joey came and gathered the rest of the mail. "Felicity, go and get up. Don't dawdle,"
Felicity went up the stairs. Joey took the letters and departed, forgetting to say anything to Claire as usual.
Claire found it another holiday she was forgotten about, so delved into her needlework with happiness. She managed to make a load of stuff for the Sale next summer, plus some things for herself and things that were needed around the house.
Joey and Jack wondered what was giving them all of this stuff, and who was doing all the mending needed, not pinning it to anyone in the household.
And Claire, still forgotten, decided to de-forget herself.

Post subject:  Re: The forgotten one Updated 12/11/10

But she knew she couldn't de-forget in one day. There was the small part which wanted to stay forgotten.
Claire planned a couple of ways to de-forget. She started Plan A quickly.
But it was hard and she couldn't just do it, Mamma was always in the company of someone or other, so she put that plan aside for now.
Plan B was messing around a lot, but Joey blamed Geoff for some of the deeds she did, and it was pointless.
She put on Plan C, to no avail.
Plans D-L didn't work either, and she mused that Plan M wouldn't work either.
That night, she arranged some stuff, then wrote a note.
To everyone,
Bye. I'm leaving this place. I'm fed up of being forgotten by you all, or be constantly reminded by one of you of being forgotten. I'm not just a thing you shunt aside and leave alone. I'm sorry about what I'm doing. Bye,
Claire.

Felicity picked the note up the next day. She read it through, and decided to leave it where it was. After all, it wouldn't be found, and she didn't want to own up to being the one person who reminded Claire of being forgotten. Her twin, Felix, entered the room.
"Mamma wants you, Flixy." he said.
"Thanks, Flix," Felicity said, and went off.
Felix noticed the note and read it.
I'm not just a thing you shunt aside and leave alone.
Felix knew he was too interested in the others to bother about Claire, and felt a little guilty he had forgotten her.
I'm sorry about what I'm doing.
What did this mean? What was Claire doing? He had horrible visions of Claire doing...
No, he didn't want to think about that. He must show the note to someone. Not Mamma. Not Papa. But someone who was close to Claire, and didn't just forget her.
Claire did have lots and lots of pocket money, he reminded himself, and found the amount, according to Claires notebook, was enough for a plane journey, and a couple of days in a hotel. She must have been saving for years. And all the money was gone, so she won't be doing what he thought at first.
But it didn't mean someone would suss it out like himself. He decided to show the note to Mamma.

"Mamma!"
Joey looked at Felix's face and smiled.
"Hello, Felix. What's up?"
Just as Felix was about to tell Mamma all about it, the phone went.
"Sorry, Flix, I've got to get that,"
And Joey, having to deal with a lot of business involving Biddy and some random baby on her doorstep, didn't find time for Felix that day.

"Claire?"
"Call me Marie, I much prefer it,"
"But, what are you doing here? I thought you were supposed to be at Freudesheim,"
"I've run away. I don't like it there, it's not a Freudesheim at all,"
Len sighed. Ever since she had been forced to marry that horrid Reg Entwhistle, she had hated Freudesheim and all it stood for.
"What do you want?" asked Len.
"I want to go to live with Sybil and work in her shop," said Marie earnestly.
"So, what do you want from me?" asked Len.
"Could you help me get to England? I can't go by myself,"
"Mmmmmm," agreed Len. "Alright, I'll help you. I'm moving to England anyway, I hate it here. I'm going to move there and join Con and Margot. Con is hosting a bookstore next to Sybils shop, and Margot is working in the Gym next to that. I'll work in the bookstore and you can live with us. Mary-Lou is working around another shop there. She's not as unbearable as she was here,"

Felix tried to get Mamma over the next few days, but it was impossible. She was always making herself busy for an excuse to not bother about her children, although she did like making a fuss when they were away.
"Flixy!" called Felix, who didn't realise his twin wouldn't do what he asked. "Could you give this note to Mamma? I've been trying to for a couple of days but I can't. And she dotes on you, so you'd be able to easily slip it to her,"
Felicity took the note, and Felix left the room.
"Yeah, right," Felicity said. "That's Claires handwriting. I'm not giving that to Mamma,"
And she left it exactly where she had found it before.
Mamma didn't seem to be bothered about Claire at all, and Felix wondered if his twin had done what he'd asked. He decided to check round, just in case.
He checked Claires room first, and it was there. He decided to try and get it to Mamma again.
"Mamma," Felix said, finding her darning her husbands socks.
"Not now, I'm busy," Joey said.
"Josephine Mary Maynard!"
"Oh, Jack. What's the matter, darling?"
"You don't spend time with your family anymore. Felix tries to talk to you and you just banter off. Geoff and Phil spend all their time in their room, and you take no notice. You simply dote over Felicity, and she brags about it. And I haven't seen Claire around recently, not in her room, not at breakfast, not in the- phone!"
"Well, she wouldn't fit in the phone," said Felix, confused. But Jack had left to answer the phone.
"Try again later," said Joey.
"Josephine! Phone's for you, then I'd like a word,"

Joey had to go somewhere after her phone conversation, and wasn't available for a lot of the rest of the day.
"Honestly!" thought Jack. "Some day I'll..."
But Joey had her word with Jack, and solemnly tried to talk to Felix. Felix had hidden himself in a disused attic from his sister, who had been nasty when he had asked her about the note a second time.

Marie had enjoyed the flight to England, where Sybils shop was these days. (It had kept on moving)
Rosamund Lilley had been one of the Air hostesses, and had had a long chat about the Chalet School, what Ros had been doing ever since, what Len had been doing ever since, and so on.
Marie was deeply interested in the discussion.
"Why's Claire going with you?" Ros suddenly asked.
"Call me Marie," said Marie.
"She doesn't like it at home anymore, and has decided to leave,"
"Ah," said Ros, understandingly.

"Phone call for Sybil!" called Marie, through the house. "It's urgent,"
Sybil appeared. "What's it about?" she groaned, not fully awake because she hadn't had any coffee yet that morning.
"No idea, the person just asked for you and wouldn't tell me anything,"
"Kay, Marie, go off now, good kid,"
Marie went to make herself some breakfast.
Halfway though her cereal, she heard Sybil call "Len! Con! Margot!"
Marie ate through the rest of her cereal quickly, and went to find the adults.
"What do we say to the kid?" asked Con, thoughtfully. "She had a right to know,"
"What do I have a right to know about?" asked Marie.
She looked at the triplets and Sybil's faces. They all were sad, but not really badly.
"We'll tell you later. We can't say anything now, we have to tell the others. Papa is depending on us to tell Auntie Madge and Uncle Richard," said Margot.
"Oh, so Uncle Dick has decided to go by the full suddenly?" said Sybil. "Why?"
"Because of some modern slang or something," replied Con.

"Yes," said Sybil.
Marie heaved a sigh of relief. For a moment, she had thought Papa had been hurt or something.
"Marie, why don't you go on with your dress?" asked Len.
"Because I've finished it,"
"Mother has had an accident," said Len. "She fell down the stairs at home,"
Marie didn't know whether to be happy or miserable at this news.
"Papas sending the rest of the kids here. Mamma passed on and Papa needs some time alone,"
"Right," said Marie, shrugging.
"Uncle Jack isn't happy," said Sybil. "I think he wants to kill himself, only he wouldn't do such a thing,"
"Hopefully," murmured Margot.

"Hi, Claire," Felix said.
"How come you're already in England?" asked Phil.
"Call me Marie, I prefer it. As for England, don't any of you know?"
"I do, and I say you shouldn't have done it. It's so boring at home these days, and you didn't need to,"
"So the world revolves around Felicity, does it? I had to eat scraps and what I could steal from the kitchen. Hi, Papa,"
"Hi, Marie," Jack said shortly.
"Did anyone see my note?"
"I did," said Felix. "And I tried showing it to someone but no-one else really saw it,"
"Shall we get moving, then?" asked Sybil.
Chaos reigned over the Maynard/Russell house for a bit. Margot gave up her post at the gym to look after the kids, and Jack buried himself in work.

Jack was doing some work. Margot was talking to Geoff and Phil about something or other. Felicity was dancing in her room, and Felix was doing some carpentry work. Claire was absorbed into her sewing. Len, Con, and Sybil were working in their shops. All was calm.
Cecily, however, was a bit bored. She hated such things as needlework and carpentry. She was not allowed near the piano, as she had been overworking the past week. She didn't have any paper to make music, and she wanted to do something. What, she didn't know, was that everyone was busy when she started to relieve her boredom.
First, she started to race herself with a stopwatch. Once she had got bored with that (not to mention breathless) she started to poke around the kitchen, another of her favourite locations.
When she had looked around there and noted all the foodstuffs, she looked at what she could make out of them. Then she got bored with that, and started to wander around.
The phone rang while she was in earshot, and she answered it.

"Yes. Tell her that Josette is going to join you in a couple of days,"
"Yep, will do. But, hang on, weren't you going to stay there, with your husband?"
"I'm divorcing him!" said Josette, and Cecily swore she heard an evil cackle.
"Alright, I'll tell Sybs. So I'll see you in a couple of days,"
"Bye!"
"Bye,"
And Cecil went to tell Sybil, but was stopped.

By nothing.
Josette came, but there was a problem. She seemed to have turned into Joey. But she was stopped with a prayer and a small accident. She went on to be the founder of many charities and organisations.
The shops owned by Maynard's merged into one shop. Felix, Geoff and Phil all worked on little nicknack's and toys and so on, and they had a toys corner. Cecily made music and sold it, along with various instruments and music supplies in the music corner. Felicity became a world famous ballerina. Marie and Sybil had their clothes corner, and Con and Len hosted a book corner, including many books that were out of print. Jack had a medicine corner, and made many medicines designed for illnesses that had been incurable until now.
Happiness bloomed on them, and they were happy after all of the fuss that happened.
The End.
