"What do you think of the new girls?" Amy Howards asked.

"The White sisters?" queried Penny Black. "Jane and Kate? They're rather odd,"

"Odd? That's an understatement," said Hatty Phillips. "They don't speak to anyone except each other,"

"And Jane messes around all of the time, but still gets high marks for all of her work. It's really annoying!" Penny said.

"They're even in the same dormitory," said Louise Brown. "I'm sure that shouldn't have happened,"

"I don't like either of them, to be honest," Hatty said.

"Let's not have an opinion on them too soon," Amy said, firmly. "They're only two new girls. What's the worst that can happen?"

Post subject:  Problem in the dormitory

Anna Howells hated being a dormy prefect. Being responsible for getting up in the mornings was hard enough, without having a load of middles to be responsible for as well. Added to the fact that two of them were new girls and she was unwilling to do the job.

After showing the new girls the general ropes and so on, she resigned to keeping everyone to the rules without further bother about anything.

"Kate White! You know visiting is not allowed. Go back to your cubicle and don't let me catch you visiting again, please,"

"Sorry, Anna," replied Kate quietly.

"You didn't need to do that," hissed Jane.

"As dormitory prefect, it is my duty to make sure everyone is keeping to the rules," Anna said. "And enforcing the rules if a person is disobeying them,"

"She's my little sister, she should be allowed to visit me. You let other people visit each other,"

"There are times when it is appropriate to not be too firm. In those instances it was to help each other with uniform, and I am quite prepared to accept that. However, if it's for social chit chat, it can wait until break. Understand?"

"It wasn't social chat, though," said Jane, earnestly. "Kate was helping me with my cubey work,"

"You could have at least asked for permission, like the others," said Anna.

Maria Roberts was rather shocked when she was passing what she thought was an empty classroom.

"You know you're a useless little baby, right?"

Maria slipped into the classroom. She was hidden from view, from one of them, at any rate. The one she could see was paler than usual.

"You're gonna do it, and right to my standards. All of it that I give to you, mind,"

"Yes," whispered the girl.

"No-one likes a swotty little girl like you,"

The girl nodded glumly. The other girl exited the room using the other exit.

The other girl passed the small window in the door. Maria stared. They had to be...

...sisters, did they not? But sisters didn't act like that to each other, did they? Maria was curious, but that shouldn't be her priority at the moment. She could deal with that later.

"What happened to the White sisters all of a sudden?"

"They had an argument yesterday. Apparently, two days ago Maria Roberts found Jane picking on Kate. You know what Maria's like, she could turn anyone from nervousness to confidence in, like, 2 seconds,"

"No she can't! 3 hours, maybe..."

"Well, whatever. She managed to get Kate to stand up to her sister,"

"Anyone could do that! Kate's only looking for someone to talk to and support her, nothing else,"

"But the point is, neither of them is exactly happy about it. Jane goes around moodily and won't speak to anyone, and Kate isn't too happy either,"

"Do we need Mrs Maynard again?"

"No. 1) we should be able to deal with this ourselves, 2) Mrs Maynard hasn't much of a clue about this, and 3) she just keeps on butting in, even if the problem's totally manageable by us,"

Prep was a very boring time where the girls never did have more than 20 minutes work - and that was at a slow pace. The prefect in charge didn't ever have more than that, either.

After Prep, the girls got together in the common-room and shared tales of their other school-days, and the difference between then and now, at the Chalet School.

"At my old school," began Hatty, "If you took any extra music lessons, then you would have to do it when the teacher visited. This usually meant in lessons,"

"But didn't your work suffer?" asked the girls, as one.

"When my older sister did hers, she's doing other things now, but when she did extra music, it was during IT, and she was the top of her class. A friend of mine also missed half of IT, and she was further than me,"

"What did you miss?"

"Oh, Biology in my first year, French in my second, and Geography - which was my most hated subject - in my third. It was fun,"

Len Entwhistle and Con Maynard sat in Cons rather small living room. Neither was speaking. Con was dealing with her latest batch of fan-mail, while Len was gazing into space.

"Ooh, a letter from Margot," said Con, excitedly. "Wonder what news she's got,"

Len said nothing. Con opened her letter and read it.

Dear Con,

I'm taking a break from work for some time, because my boss is concerned that I am doing too much. After staying in a time-warp for ages at the Platz, it astonished all of us to find out that it was the next century! But because of that, I took an IT course and started working here - you know everything, of course.

Because I'll have to take a break for at least a month, if not longer, I thought I'd head homewards. Could you host me? If you can't I'll go Freudesheim, Mamma knows about it all.

Con zipped through all of the rest of the news and then turned to Len.

"Len, Margot's coming to stay for a while," Con said.

"But Margot's a medical missionary, working in Africa,"

"You know that's not true. Margot's working at some centre place in England,"

"Reg says that Margot is a medical missionary, and I hate to disagree with him,"

Con stared. What the [beep] was wrong with Len? Why was she acting this way?

"Hi Margot," said Con. "How are you doing?"

"Okay," said Margot. "How about you?"

"I'm doing okay," Con said. "But there's something up with Len. She's quieter than usual and seems to agree with Reg all of the time, even when she knows that the truth is different,"

Margot nodded, grimly.

"So what's your work like?" said Con.

"Quite fun, actually," Margot replied. "I help organise charity events and so on,"

"What does your centre do, anyway? You never said,"

"We protect human rights, and let people know their rights. We give talks in varied places - often in schools. I could give a talk in the Chalet School while I'm away,"

"I thought you were supposed to be resting from work," said Con, smiling.

"I know," said Margot. "From all of the manual work and the IT course," she mumbled.

"No, Margot," said Len. "If you're taking time off, you should be totally off, not doing more work, Reg said. You are not to give that speech,"

"Don't worry," said Margot. "I won't... give that speech. Anyway, phone,"

Margot sped off to the phone.

"Margot's waiting for permission from her bosses to give a speech," said Con. "It's not really up to you,"

Len looked uncomfortable, and mumbled something.

Margot reappeared a while later, with exitement in her face.

"They've not only given me permission to do a speech," said Margot, "But also do a workshop in the school, yearly. They're gonna send me someone. And there was a second call, Reg wants you home ASAP,"

"Bye," said Len, before gathering her stuff and vanishing.

"Why's she in a hurry?" said Con. "She's been acting so weirdly as of late,"

"I have an idea," said Margot, seriously. "But I have no evidence and I don't really want to think about it,"

"Yep," replied Jenny.

At Con's chalet, Con was talking to Len.

"Ooh, door," said Con.

Len said nothing.

"Hiya, Margot. Who's your friend?"

"I'm Jenny," said Jenny.

"Ah. Come in. My boyfriend is also here," said Con. "He's called Len and he's very quiet,"

Len Collingwood and Len Entwhistle were daggers drawn at first, before Len realised that Len was a doctor at the Sanatorium. She had only learned this fact one day...

"Len, I need to talk to you!"

Len Entwhistle stopped in her tracks, and hurriedly racked her brains to see if she had done anything wrong, to make Papa want to talk to her.

"It's about the operation next week," said Jack.

Len sifted through her brain. What operation? Was she to have one next week? But then she turned to see Len Collingwood.

Oh. He was a doctor.

... It was fustrating having two Lens around.

"And to round off our assembly," Miss Annersley's famed voice rung through the hall, "We have two people who would like to talk to you,"

As Margot and Jenny walked to the podium, some of the Seniors straightened up a little. Their example set all of the others up.

"Hello Chalet girls!" Margot said, merrily. "I'm Margot Maynard, and this is Jenny Hill. I must say the school has changed quite a bit since I came. Anyway, I now work for a charity which is working to raise awareness of Human Rights. Any questions so far?"

"What are Human Rights?" asked Maria Roberts asked.

"Human Rights," started Jenny. "Human Rights are a set of 30 rights which every human being has, simply by being humans,"

"Which right is the most important right?"

"That's a matter of opinion," Jenny answered. "For me, personally, I think that the last right is the most important: No-one can take away your Human Rights. I know Margot here loves number 11: We’re always innocent till proven guilty. Another friend of mine feels that each human right is as important as the next,"

"Could you give us a complete list of the Human Rights?"

"Yes, but not in the middle of assembly, there's not enough time," Margot said. "We can go into detail about that in the workshop we're planning over the next few weeks. On Monday evenings we'll be doing a workshop for Seniors, for Middles there'll be one on a Wednesday, and the Juniors will have one on Friday. We'll also have a Sunday afternoon workshop for everyone and anyone who wants to go,"

"Sorry, but I think I'll have to cut you there, ladies," Miss Annersley said, looking at the time through her glasses. "The bell's about to go,"

The two 'ladies' left.

It was Wednesday evening. The Middles, or most of them, were hurriedly gathering all of their belongings they thought they might need for the workshop.

“Do you think we’ll need paper?”

“I think I’ll take my pencil-case, just in case,”

“Oh, I so wish I was allowed to go!”

“You can go on Sunday; don’t be so self pitying!”

“Kate, stay back,” said Jane. “Keep me company,”

“You have company already,” said Kate. “There’s Anne, and Tina, and Nora. Anyway, I promised Deidre, Karen and Felicity that I’d go with them. They’d be really disappointed if I didn’t go with them, and anyway, it’s too late to change my mind now. I’ll tell you all about it,”

“Oh, never mind. Don’t bother. I don’t give a damn,”

“You used to be so nice,”

“What do you mean by that?”

“You used to be happy, and nice, and friendly. Now you’re nasty, and bossy, and grumpy. Why are you being like this? What’s your problem?”

"Please, Margot?"

"Okay..." she opened it and read it carefully. "We've got to get her away from there,"

"Eh? How did you work that out? It's the middle of the night,"

"If it wasn't for me we wouldn't have come here. If it wasn't for me you'd never have had the advantage to do it all,"

"This is rather silly though. We came here because of that Miss Trelawney cow convincing mum that we should come, not anyone else. I shouldn't have taken advantage of mums word in the first place,"

"I don't want to stay here. The girls are boring and the rules are horrible,"

"Then what are you going to do?"

"Run away,"

"Kate, that's absurd!"

"I'm doing it," Kate said, and started walking away.

"But Kate, you can't... This is so ridiculous. Kate. Kate! You can't!"

"Why the bloody hell shouldn't I!" Kate yelled.

"I hope I can carry on with my life properly. I didn't want to marry him in the first place, not really, and it was only ever really a trial period. Reg is okay, he's great, but I never really wanted to be with him. I didn't love him. It wasn't fun doing the divorce, and someone always had to stay in the chalet because one of us always had people at the door for help, or a quick chat, or some other reason. I'm going my way, he's going his. I'm going to go to teach at Carnbach, before I run into a nice man who isn't a doctor. I'll be able to write to Margot every so often, and go to her place in the holidays. Con can carry on writing to us, and writing her books.
Come to think of it, we're just sisters. Normal ones in mind, with age gaps and everything. It often seems like we're the real sisters to each other, and all of the others were like adoptees, or add-ons, not as important as our sisterhood.
Why have I been trying to avoid them recently? I couldn't tell anyone at all about the break-up. I tried to place everything like it would have been in Mammas mind. Me, happily married and glad to be darning the socks of a doctor, whowill always be superior to myself. Con, the fantasy writer, although I know the real sort of thing she writes - and Mamma would not approve of it (although Reg is a fan of hers). Margot, the missionary, although really she goes in for charity work and a good bit of Brandy,"

I've confused myself...

I don't know what's going to happen next, because I really hadn't thought of one of the plot lines that suddenly came. If anyone wants to continue the Len plotline they may do so. It really wasn't intended. At all. It just seeped in. That's why it's so confused. Sorry.

Jane didn't follow Kate straight away. She knew that while Kate needed to go away to a hidden corner and think, if she were followed she'd know and wouldn't really think things through.

Jane started to swear at the school. Even with free time, there was nowhere to hide if you wanted to think things through, but if you stayed in the common-room and thought, you'd be dragged into some activity you were unwilling to do. There was no escape from these girls. You never had any privacy. No wonder anyone tried to get away.

Jane put her coat and outdoor shoes on, before trying to track Kate. She went to the school dog, a St Bernard that was named Rufina, and then used Rufina to track Kate down.

It took Jane a good amount of time to start, mainly because she knew that it would be better to let Kate get a good distance ahead - let Kate think no-one was following her and be able to think out the situation for herself, and then once she had thought it through thoroughly enough to be persuaded to come back, Jane decided that that would be the time where she'd appear on the scene, and do the persuading.

I apologise for any inconvenience.

The journey took ages, or to Jane it did. She told herself that every step was a step nearer her goal. However, Rufina was tiring now, and flopped down. Jane gave up going further, and sat down on a nearby log, absently petting Rufina.

Jane felt useless. She needed to find her sister, yet it was impossible if Rufina wouldn't co-operate. She did have to stay with Rufina, now she had brought her in the first place.

"Hi, Jane,"

Jane jumped. Kate was standing right behind her.

"You really shouldn't have run off like that," said Jane.

"I'm sorry," Kate said, blushing.

Since they had to wait for Rufina, it was getting light when they could turn back and get back to the school. Their disappearance had already gone all over the school, and search parties arranged when they turned back. Somehow they had evaded the search parties and hoped to sneak back in without anyone knowing that they had disappeared in the first place. However, when they reached the front gate, Hilda Annersley stood before them.
