The Nazi soldiers shot in panic; fear of the Soviets corrupted their concentration.

Bullet holes pockmarked the solid wood. All furniture had long since been requisitioned and the school desks and tables and chairs chopped up for firewood.

Allied soldiers kicked the doors of the Chalet School down and scanned the area for the enemy. Gunfights on the stairs and in the dormitories took place. Little by little, inch by inch, the Chalet School was liberated.

It was not quiet for long. Soldiers were billeted there and the building and Tirol area was handed over to the forces of France.

Tensions between the Allies increased. There were several "accidental" incursions into the French, British and American zones, where Soviet soldiers were pursuing "criminals" or there was a dispute over the border.

On one occasion, a whole platoon of Soviet forces simply marched in to what was once Madge Bettany's office and claimed the Tirol as part of the Soviet zone of occupation.

"This land was awarded as compensation to the People of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" the pugnacious officer had proclaimed.

When the French Commandant had pointed out several errors with the Commissar's map, the Soviets still did not move; instead tanks were brought to bear on the once beautiful Chalet building, so loved of Madge and Joey.

The Commandant informed his military and political superiors and to their intense embarrassment, their colleagues in Britain and the United States heard of the incident.

"I bet they bloody capitulate and give the Tirol to the Commies!" snarled the British General.

The American General preferred to use more colourful language and directed his ire against the Communists. He was ambivalent to both Britain and France and certainly favoured neither.

It is against the threat of Soviet annexation that the first return to the Chalet School by a Chalet School girl took place after the war.

Simone arrived in Briesau to meet Andre. She had expected the worst. She had not expected to see the Chalet School still standing. Could she bear it? Was she strong enough? And yet, on a whim, she had a sudden opportunity to go and be the first back there; she would even beat her good friend Joey!

Simone's resolve wavered. What if it were too awful? Perhaps she should have taken Joey for support. Simone flushed. She couldn't live in Joey's shadow all her life. Simone had elected not to tell Joey where she was going. Partially for the fact that what they might see would be very upsetting, partially because she wanted to be on her own with Andre and partially to be independent of Joey.

She had seen the Tiernjoch and the Sonnalpe on her way to Briesau. She would be interested to see the dripping rock at Geisalm, the Tiernsee and the salt caves again. Would they be very different? She was not sure about visiting Spartz; given the memory of what happened there.

She knew the French forces were occupying Tirol so she got a shock when the first thing she saw when stepping off the train was a giant of a Soviet officer, the blue band of his cap denoting he was a member of Stalin's feared secret police!

Simone froze and regarded the man as if he were from another planet. The man ignored her and instead greeted some other soldiers on the platform. Simone was relieved to see French soldiers and road signs in French and not the frightening looking Cyrillic script of Russian.

There were food queues for rations, burnt buildings and bullet holes, making the village look as if it were crying or deeply sick. Simone was aware of people staring at her. Did anyone recognise her? Did she recognise anyone? It had been so long since she had walked the cobbled streets of Briesau, but her memory returned remarkably quickly. She felt sick as she saw some anti semitic Nazi graffiti. She sought out Andre.

She felt an eerie feeling in Briesau. She felt half welcome, but half scared.

Accomodation had been provided for the French officers and where necessary family members. Simone and Andre had been so relieved to see each other. They celebrated with a bottle or two of wine, a rare luxury in these hard times.

"Andre I wish to see the Chalet School."

Andre paled. His wife would be distraught if she saw the state her beloved school was in.

"It will be a shock, the war has not been kind to it. I must come with you."

It was Simone's turn to become pale at these words.

There was still a boat service in operation crossing the Tiernsee. Simone looked into the beautiful water and was shocked to see what looked like a tank, the German insignia stared defiantly from underwater at Simone.

As Simone and Andre disembarked, Andre held onto his wife's hand. She then got her bearings and stopped in shock.

Where Le Petit Chalet had been was wreckage, the wood had been taken for fuel. On the main buildings, wood had been stripped away, again for fuel and there was fire damage and bullet holes which pockmarked the walls. There was nothing, no indication that it had ever been a school.

Simone sat down, gasping. Maybe she should have taken Joey with her. Could she cope? Could she bear to go inside? What horrors awaited her there?

"Be Brave, my love!" Andre comforted her as best he could.

"Be brave, that is what Madame said at the beginning of all this! I will be brave! Onwards!"

Clutching Andre, she entered the building which had once been so full of shrieks of delight and a veritable Tower of Babel of languages. The floor was muddy and broken, Simone remembered wicked Middles such as Evvy and Corney being made to scrub the floor clean. The floor needed a good scrubbing now.

Where to now? Madame's office? The dormitories? The classrooms?

Suddenly Andre spotted a movement, someone was hiding in the shadows. His military training caused him to leap into action, but the fugitive had got away.

"Andre!"

"No matter, probably just someone looking for food or fuel."

The fugitive retreated to his hiding place in the rocks. He had recognised the woman with the long black hair. Terror took hold of him, but something else too: a desire for revenge.

Andre was sensitive to his wife's feelings. He saw a wistful look on her face and she appeared to be holding back tears.

"Ma cherie, I will not think any less of you if you weep. You are very brave returning to your beloved school to see it in this state."

Simone wept silently on Andre's shoulder. She could remember such happy times; mostly in hysterics over Evvy and Corney's latest exploits and of course that of Margia and her dear friends in the quartette. It was more than that too. The memories of her relative Therese Lepattre. Simone wept with relief that cousin Therese was not able to see the Chalet School in this condition. She took her husband on a tour.

"Madame's office, later that of cousin Therese and Miss Annersley."

Simone opened the door with some trepidation, almost as if Mlle Lepattre were inside dictating letters or marking papers and would be irritated by any interruption.

The room was bare; no desk, no chair, no bookcases. The study was cold and empty. The view of the outside was of a scorched and blackened field.

Simone did not linger. She noticed with a glow of happiness the thick wooden bench with a burn mark in the chemistry lab, caused by Evvy Lannis when she wasn't paying attention to her lesson. At least there was a small memento of happier days. Thankfully Evvy had not been hurt on that occasion. Simone made up her mind to write to that charming and naughty American whose vivacity had touched everyone in the Chalet School.

Each classroom held a special memory for Simone. To Andre it did not mean anything, but he let his sensitive wife take her time; it was important to her.

The beautiful floral wallpaper was peeling off the walls in the dormitories. SImone picked away at it sadly. Curtain rails were still hanging above where beds should have been. Everything had been taken. Simone glanced out of the window.

She looked again and screamed in horror!

"Andre! It is him! It is him!"

Simone shook uncontrollably as Andre took her in his arms.

"Who? Who is it? Simone, tell me!"

"I saw him in the garden looking up at the window, that evil wicked boy! That Nazi! That Hermann Eisner!"

Eisner was a creature of hate. Brainwashed by the NAZI party since his early boyhood he could not believe that the Third Reich had collapsed. Since the end of the war he had been forced to live in caves and steal for his food and drink. He had plenty of enemies in the Tyrol, but it was still home to him.

His sad and pathetic life was always somebody else's fault. The Nazis had offered him his rightful revenge and he had taken it. Cruelly.

He felt like that nasty little boy again when he recognised the French woman in that now deserted girls' school. He felt a frisson of terror in case he were caught. Also in case that brute Maynard were still around.

Hopefully Maynard was not around. If he could just have his rightful revenge on the French woman. Just one more chance...

Eisner did not know that Simone was made of sterner stuff. Indeed, she could surprise herself with her determination. Poor old Simone could get quite alarmed at how much of a disciplinarian she could be! She knew once she saw Hermann Eisner again that a battle was about to begin...

Post subject:  Re: Simone returns 28/04/08 updated

Since her first days at the Chalet School Simone had grown up a great deal. Many factors had transformed her from girl to woman. Her battle with her own possessive feelings towards Joey, her submissive nature, her sensitivity and temper; then there had been the death of Mlle Lepattre and the war, her marriage and flight to the UK. Simone had truly become a woman of substance and intelligence led by the Chalet School ethos.

Sadly she was still prone to moments of worry and distress. She was despite her Chalet School Girl essence, still only human. Memories of that dreadful time before the war had come flooding back and to see that evil Hermann Eisner was sickening. Her fear multiplied as she realised he was not a nasty little boy anymore, but a young man who could do some considerable damage.

She allowed herself to be half carried, half dragged by her husband to the room they shared.

"Ma petite! Madame would not wish to see you like this." Andre soothed her.

Simone was not to be soothed.

"That wicked boy! He's there in the Chalet School now! Madame's Chalet School!"

Simone was nearly in hysterics and it took all of Andre's patience and love to calm his wife down. With a certain bluntness in his voice he added,

"Then show him not just what the Chalet School can do, but a real Frenchwoman and a relative of Therese Lepattre too!"

There was a long pause.

Amid Simone's red rimmed eyes a fire burned. In a quiet and determined voice she replied,

"Help me my husband! We shall deal with him once and for all, for those that died!"

Meanwhile Eisner had fled to the salt mines. He hid treasures he had stolen from houses and his victims in these caves along with his Nazi uniform. He dressed in his uniform and saluted a cracked portrait of his late Fuhrer.

"This will be my final battle mein Fuhrer. To rid the land of those who opposed your masterplan from the very beginning!"

He loaded his gun and with evil thoughts about Simone in his mind, changed back into his rags and set about tracing the Chalet School Girl of France. He was horrified to find the business end of a rifle in his face.

Post subject:  Re: Simone returns update 11/11/08

Pyotr Iliich Sermenev had deserted the glorious soviet people's army and had made the crossing into French occupied Tirol. All his life he had been to hate the wicked imperialist West, but curiosity had got the better of him. As a boy he has listened to his late grandmother's tales of how she had travelled the West with her father who was a diplomatic attache in the service of the Tsar.

There was also the brutality of his comrades, especially Sergeant Struve a man with a very low opinion of any Soviet citizen who was not Russian. Pyotr was from Armenia and he had borne the brunt of the Sergeant's cruelty. Pyotr had had a glimpse of Western hospitality when he got lost from his patrol one night and walked straight into the British zone. He had been given a beer and a square meal and although he did not speak English, was looked after with warmth and courtesy for a few hours before being returned to his unit. Then the brutal reprisals and humiliations from the Sergeant had begun.

Pyotr was a sensitive lad and hated the army. He had nobody at home. Stalin had seen to that, so had the Great Patriotic War. So, he headed not to the British zone where he might be recognised and returned to the Soviet zone again, but to the French zone. He had been hiding in caves and forests and was on his way to pick up his supplies from a cave where he had hidden some food, when he saw a young man, almost a boy surrounded by Nazi memorabilia. Maybe Pyotr could do something for the Soviet people after all.

"Hands up! Higher! Where I can see them!" the Soviet was trembling with excitement, whilst the Nazi was calm and apparently unnerved. The sound of the streams and water in the caves added to Pyotr's tension.

"You really musn't shoot me comrade!" Hermann said coolly.

"You and I have a far greater enemy! We should never have been fighting against each other. We should have combined out forces to slaughter the imperialist and capitalist swine. I know of someone you can assassinate and prove yourself to your Soviet cause!

Pyotr loved his country and knew all about the overthrow of the wicked Tsar and his capitalist dogs. Hermann's words played on his heart strings and the evil Nazi knew this.

"How many people were slaughtered by the Tsar? Do you know?"

Hermann continued to wax lyrical on the evils of Royalty. He was working up to a plan.

"You can assassinate the Crown Princess of Belsornia. I can show you where she is. She is under French guard, she has long black hair and speaks in a French accent."

Hermann could almost imagine the bullets ending Simone's life, whilst the Soviet would be blamed and die a horrible death. Hermann's revenge would be complete and he would scarcely have pulled a trigger! What a gullible fool this Soviet boy was. Definitely one of the Untermenschen!

Simone had been on the verge of writing to Joey for help but matters were taken out of her hands. She saw Eisner and a young man skulking around the Chalet School. Eisner's presence inflaed the frustrated French woman.

She looked for the pistol Andre always kept to one side. Shaking and sweating with emotion, not thinking, she slipped out to face her enemy.

The Chalet School was now a terrifying burnt out shell of its former happier self.

"Eisner I know you are here and I know what you want to do with me!"

Simone was out of her mind.

"I know you can hear me Eisner! who was that with you? Another Nazi?"

Silence.

In what used to be the kitchens, Eisner grinned whilst Pyotr looked puzzled.

"How does she know you Comrade?" asked Pyotr

"Schtill dumpkopff!" snarled Eisner.

Simone wavered. Why had she taken the gun? Tears flowed. She needed help. She needed Andre. Madame would never approve of her coming to this. She would just have to accept she couldn't cope with this. She felt everyone would think the worse of her for this.

"Ach you Chalet School Girls, you think we shall not have our revenge on you?"

Pyotr did not like being part of this. Was this woman really the Crown Princess of Belsornia? Somehow he doubted it.

Eisner opened fire. Simone yelled.

Outside the Chalet School somebody heard shots and the French forces were notified. Andre had a horrible thought his wife may be involved, he was right!

Simone had never fired a gun before and the bullet ricocheted nearly catching Eisner in the knee.

The furious Nazi was now incandescent with rage.

"You think you can evade the justice of the Reich!"

Pyotr did not like this man and he wrestled Eisner to the floor.

Insanity seemed to give Eisner superhuman strength and Pyotr was knocked unconscious. Simone rushed in as Eisner was getting up. Shaking and with tears streaming down her face, she screamed,

"Don't move! Et maintenant pour ma cousine Therese, pour Joey, pour l'ecole et pour Madame!"

Eisner laughed.

"Would you really use it? A girl? A simpleton like you? Do you know what it is like to kill someone?"

Simone was bordering on the hysterical.

"I do not have blood on my hands! You do!"

"Then kill me! Go on shoot! Or haven't you the courage to pull the trigger?"

Simone shook, grasping the gun in both hands.

A shot rang out.

Eisner crumpled to the floor; no longer a living threat to the Chalet School. He looked somewhat disappointed.

It was not Simone who had shot him after all.

It was not the forces of the Armee Francaise.

There was no Andre to welcome her.

The room was filled with half a dozen soldiers of the People's Army of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

A sergeant quickly disarmed Simone and a Captain strode up to her.

Pyotr was hauled to his feet by his comrades and bundled out of the room.

The Captain eyed Simone with curiosity. He smiled. Simone relaxed. Maybe all the scare stories about Russians were not so bad after all.

He spoke fluent French in response to Simone's question.

"I can't thank you enough, but what are you doing here? I thought this was the French sector? "

"Forgive us Madame."

Simone felt strange being addressed as "Madame" in the building that used to house the original Chalet School.

"We were on the trail of one of our Comrades who has become somewhat disturbed. We are taking him home to Russia so he can receive proper medical care for his delusions."

"Then you need not detain me?"

Simone made a move to go. All she could think about was her own solid lump of comfort and she could feel one of her hysterical moments coming on. Help! She could feel something awkward was going to happen.

"One moment!"

The Captain's tone of voice changed slightly, the Soviet soldiers gripped their bayonets.

" It would be helpful if you were to volunteer your side of the story as to how you came to be involved in this. We did catch you with a gun, civilians are not permitted such weapons and you were found by Societ soldiers in the company of a deserter and a Nazi. How do we know where your sympathies lie? We like to establish facts, you understand?"

Even the cold Grizel would not have blamed Simone for what she was about to do.

Simone lost control.

She felt threatened.

She had hysterics.

"I am here with my husband, he is a French army officer! Major Andre de Bersac! That dead man there is a Nazi! He was trying to kill me! I came back to visit my old school and he found us! He tried to kill Joey and Jack by informing on them to the Gestapo! I am not a Nazi! Andre! Help!

I have never met that Soviet soldier in my life! Andre HELP! HELP! HELP!"

As Simone was lead screaming from the building and into a Soviet jeep, the French forces arrived.

"SIMONE!" screamed Andre.

"SIMONE!"

"SIMONE!"

He furiously ordered his vehicle in pursuit. Warning shots were fired over his head.

Andre opened fire.

They were coming to the border of the Soviet sector.

The jeep with the captive Simone got through. Russian orders were screamed at the border guards who aimed their weapons on the oncoming French vehicle.

Andre was livid.

Simone was terrified.

A rumble was heard and the ground shook. Andre found himself looking down the barrel of a Soviet tank.

A Russian officer advised him in no uncertain terms to leave. The click of safety catches pointed at him persuaded him (much to his fury) that discretion was the better part of valour and proper procedures might be the order of the day.

Incensed, and with tears streaming down his face, Andre ordered his men to return to base.

Simone shivered in the Captain's office. He watched her write her version of events. He had made some tea for her which seemed rather pleasant. She had been offered some food from which she shrank in horror. The skinless sausage looked threatning and the bread looked like solid rock.

The Captain passed the statement to his translators to be typed up as official evidence.

"A must regrettable incident at the border."

"Your men did shoot at Andre first. He is my husband. You have kidnapped me. Doubtless he is planning a rescue."

Was it through sheer terror that Simone was so defiant? She felt she had nothing to lose!

A bald headed slippery beetle of man with cracked teeth and circular wire spectacles slithered into the room. The captain leapt to attention and saluted.

"Greetings Comrade Political Officer!"

"Greetings Comrade Captain!"

The Political Officer spoke in French so Simone could understand.

"Greetings Madame. I am the Political Officer for this Soviet district.
I am here to question you on your collaboration with the Nazi Eisner and your recruitment of one of our brave soldiers to cause subversion in the People's Union of Socialist Republics! I want the truth from you."

Simone was handed a charge sheet (written in French, albeit badly) in which the Soviet soldier Pyotr had in turn accused her of being a Nazi in league with Eisner and trying to kidnap him and recruit him to their cause.

Andre's pursuit was also used as evidence that the Capitalist West were eager to rerieve their spy, Simone.

Simone fainted.

Pyotr had in fact said nothing of the kind against Simone. Within two minutes he had been court martialled for desertion and he had been shot.

In his office Commandant Vassily Sergeivich Bulgakov gazed from the window. He had just got rid of that vile political officer from his office. Such a blatant spy for the feared NKVD. Political Officer! Ha! Supposed to "look after the men's morale"? Sapped it more like! How could professional soldiers work to maximum effectiveness when there was a bureaucrat spy looking over their shoulders?

A Sergeant entered, saluted and placed a report on his desk.

Commandant Bulgakov waved him away. He drank his tea and eyed the report. He choked on his tea. What in Lenin's name had that blockhead Captain (who was in cahoots with the Political Officer) been up to? Kidnapped a French civilian woman and was now accusing her of being in league with the Nazis, subversion and espionage?

"This stops now!"

Putting on his hat, coat and gloves and grabbing his swagger stick (he felt like using it on someone) he went to the detention area.

"Release that woman this instant!"

"But Comrade Sir, the Political Officer..."

"Do you want to go to Siberia?"

"No thank you sir."

The Private hurriedly released Simone.

"I am pleased to see you know how to follow the appropriate command structures in the army Comrade Private. Fear not, the Political Officer will not punish you. He has too many enemies in high places and I have a few favours to call in!"

"Madame de Bersac, on behalf of the People's Army and my Country, I wish to offer my deepest apologies for the distress you have suffered at the hands of my subordinates. I have given orders for the French army to be contacted to collect you with all haste. Would you care to wait in my office with me?"

Frankly Simone did not want to sample any more Soviet hospitality.

"It is so much more comfortable than remaining here and you will be quite safe from the Political Officer. You will have my protection. I am the camp Commandant here."

Simone allowed herself to be led away.

The Commandant was outraged that anyone should be treated in such a way. This woman was terrified. Whatever happened to values of hospitality and kindness?

He tried to make conversation.

"Do you know Tirol well?"

Simone nodded.

A friend of my Father's worked for the British embassy and he lived in Tirol before the war.

A response. Simone looked inquisitive.

"You knew this man?"

"Yes! He was a regular guest at our home. Father was in the diplomatic service and had special responsibility for Anglo Soviet relations."

"Was his name not Captain Ted Humphries?"

"How did you know that Madame?"

"The building your soldiers took me from was my old school. The daughter of Captain Humphries still goes to that school even though it has moved to England. She is still alive, but alas the poor Captain died in a rock climbing accident. We all knew Captain Humphries worked for the British embassy in Russia for a time"

The Commandant listened spellbound as he heard a resume of the Chalet School and of the exile of the Chalet School from Tirol.

"Did you have any Russians at the Chalet School?"

"I remember a couple of girls, but they were juniors. I do not recall their names. Pretty little girls. One of them, her family fled Russia in the Civil War."

Commandant Bulgakov nodded. A dark time for Russia after the Revolution; famine and civil war.

"Joey knows some Russian. she asked Captain Ted to send her letters in Russian and she would translate them. She would then send him her attempts at Russian."

"I remember! I remember the Captain brought them to me one day when he visited my Father. I remember correcting them myself as clear as if it were yesterday. Please tell this lady Joey, she must continue with her Russian! Maybe one day we can meet and I would so like to see the daughter of Captain Ted."

Simone warmed to the Commandant.

They were interrupted by the Sergeant who came to inform his superior that the French forces had arrived.

The Commandant accompanied Simone to the arms of her beloved. Andre held on to his wife for dear life. He was deeply hurt and regarded the Commandant with the deepest suspicion as that officer made his profuse apologies for Simone's treatment.

The Commandant waved Simone and Andre off. He had offered them a proper meal and some vodka, but Simone was understandably keen to escape.

The Commandant had some important calls to make.

He was sure he was alone and reached round his neck, which he quickly stopped as his door was kicked open by the Political Officer.

"You will pay for this Bulgakov! Capitalist Swine! Going over my head! Releasing an NKVD prisoner! A Nazi spy! Your children will never see their father again! It's Siberia for you! Guards arrest him!"

"Arrest him!"

"ARREST HIM!"

Guards appeared, but not arrest the Commandant. They already held a handcuffed Captain and now the Political Officer was about to get the same treatment.

"You have exceeded your authority Political Officer. You will find it is you who will be enjoying the Siberian winters my friend!"

A look of sheer terror crossed the Political Officer's face. A contemptible mixture of whine and bray uttered forth from him as he gibbered for mercy and was led to the detention area to await transport to Moscow.

Alone at last, his thoughts on the French Lady, her school and Captain Humphries' daughter, the Commandant closed his eyes and said, "God Bless You"

Around his neck he clasped a mini icon from the Russian Orthodox Church; a secret he was to keep all his life.

What a relief! Poor Simone must have been terrified-I'm sure she knew the part Russia played in the liberation of countries over run by the Nazis- and how they treated some of the women. She must have feared for her life. Thank goodness that Commandant Vassily Sergeivich Bulgakov was one of the good guys and maintained his faith.

Thanks, Phil.

Late in the evening, Simone and Andre were in each other's arms; a bottle of red wine only an eighth full.

"I couldn't bear to have lost you. I would have followed you to Russia and back, even if I had to fight my way single handed."

Simone looked into Andre's eyes.

She knew Andre had heard of similar "arrests" of civilians by Soviet forces and the poor unfortunates were now firmly behind Soviet borders with no chance of escape.

She could see the relief in his eyes that she was back.

"I cannot stay here, I must depart to home, but I do not wish to leave you Andre!"

"Oh you will be much safer with Joey. Besides my tour of duty is nearly up. We shall not be separated for long."

"Oh those beastly Nazis and beastly Russians! Look what has happened to the beautiful Tirol. Poor Cousin Elise, she would be so distressed."

"At least there is no more Eisner."

Simone nodded.

"I am proud of you Ma Cherie. You will have much to tell Joey!"

Simone smiled,

"Do you think she will believe me?"

Joey eyed the coffee table doubtfully.

She knew it must happen some day. It was inevitable.

Coffee, with Simone, on their own.

"Oh you are such a mean, Joey Maynard!"

Joey scolded herself.

Simone could be entertaining and was nowhere near as possessive or jealous as she used to be. She had the same high standards as everyone else and she was loyal and dependable when support was required. In the old days they could both give vent to their feelings whenever Grizel had upset them; which was frequently.

Joey was astonished when Simone walked in accompanied by Frieda and Marie.

"Frieda! Marie! I hadn't expected!"

"Do not worry my Jo, I will lay two extra places. I have an adventure that must be told to all of you, so I asked Frieda and Marie along. I hope you don't mind?"

Simone helped herself to the kitchen.

"Adventure? What's all this about? Frieda? Do you know anything? Marie?"

"We are as much in the dark as you are Joey."

"Oh dear this is most unsettling. What can the matter be?"

Simone brought in the extra china and proceeded to pour four cups of coffee.

"I have as you know returned from visiting Andre with his unit. He is based in Tirol."

A dead silence fell. Joey just stared.

"Tirol?"

"What did you see?"

"How much damage?"

"The school, was it....?"

Simone drew a deep breath.

Simone breathed deeply.

"You do not know what a relief it is to be home, safe and well with you at last!"

"Come on, spill the beans my love!"

"I could be in Moscow or siberia by now."

"What?" chorused the three remaining ladies.

"It was a nightmare to see our beautiful school a blackened shell of its former self. Le Petit Chalet is no more, but Die Rosen has survived. Then that monster Eisner recognised me. He was going to kill me, but my life was saved by the Russians.

They took me back to their camp and a horrid political officer accused me of being a spy. They were going to take me to Moscow that very night! Andre had heard of civilians being arrested on trumped up charges and sent to Russia. They are trying to rebuild their population and punish the ordinary folk he says.

Then the camp commandant ordered my release. Joey, he knew Captain Ted."

"What an adventure Simone!"

"Dear Simone, how did you cope?"

"Are you sure you are allright?"

"You know you can talk to any of us Simone!"

The above from Frieda and Marie.

Simone stared intently at the open mouthed Joey.

"Well my Jo, do you have nothing to say?"

Without thinking, Joey blurted out, "You didn't just have a nightmare Simone?"

Simone looked fit to burst and Marie and Frieda nearly grabbed each other for support.

Simone grabbed her bag and proceeded to rummage through it. She handed some peculiar documents to Joey.

"I suppose I made these up for a joke?"

The commandant had given Andre all the paperwork of Simone's arrest so no trace of her existed on the base.

"I shall need my Russian dictionary." She said weakly.

Joey tottered away, Marie supporting her.

Frieda soothed the seething Simone.

"That's quite a shock you've given us! I'm sure Joey didn't mean to be rude. She just never expected this of you. I'm sure once she lets it sink in that she will support you."

Simone nodded.

"I can't take it in! I just.." began Joey.

Marie consoled her.

"I wasn't there to help or protect my friends! I wasn't there! Oh, and I should have seen Tirol if only to realise the damage."

Ashamed, Joey returned to Simone.

"But...but...but..but..but Simone, how could you have coped? I mean without me there? You must have been in pieces!" You should have had me with you! Why didn't you tell me?"

"I am not a fool Joey. I can look after myself and I did have my Andre there!"

Simone was still very highly strung.

"No of course you are not...I'm sorry, I just...you had an adventure and I ... we.... weren't there to support you!"

"You show very little faith Jo."

Simone eyed her friend coldy.

Joey felt vulnerable; she couldn't say anything right and she did desperately want to protect Simone. She did care for her. She also missed Tirol and Simone's description of the state of the school and the area were upsetting to say the least.

Simone tied her hair back more a a distraction from her emotions.

Joey looked like she was going to weep.

"Simone, it's just because I care! And the Tirol! The beautiful Tirol! Oh those beastly bullying Russians!"

Simone moved to comfort Joey. Frieda and Marie looked on concerned and with sympathy.

"I did not get to visit the Sonnalpe. That was behind the Russian line."

Joey looked horrified. How much more could she take in?

"But what of you, Simone? How are you feeling now?"

This from Frieda.

Simone drew a deep breath, reached for her coffee and drank.

"I am so happy to be with my dear friends again. I wondered how you could ever get me out of Russia."

"Andre would have made such a fuss to get the French authorities to act, and Jack wouldn't have been far behind with the British!"

Marie reassured Simone.

"No nightmares?" asked the concerned Frieda.

"A few for the first two nights, but Andre was there for me."

"You are very lucky to have him Simone." Marie smiled.

"I am. I did manage to take photographs of the area before all the drama started. I have them in my bag. I was also going to look for good Herr Braun and see if he was still alive, when everything went wrong!"

Simone rummaged in her capacious bag and produced her unusual holiday snaps.

Joey stopped herself in time from remarking upon a memory she had of Simone's photography skills at school.

Her eyes widened at the pictures of the devastation.

Buildings had been obliterated or burnt, some remained standing, disused army vehicles littered streets. Soldiers were everywhere.

"Alas! It will take time for Tirol to recover, but I felt you should know."
sighed Simone.

"And we don't yet know what happened to our friends there!" spoke a worried Joey, who was just beginning to recover from her shock.

"We must write Simone! Surely a postal service of sorts is up and running?"

queried Marie.

Simone nodded.

"Of course the French army postal service is the best. We must work now to contact our friends!"

Simone smiled.

"And surely even in these hard times, we can send some contribution to them if they accept, to help themselves?"

asked Frieda.

Simone agreed.

"Come along my Jo. We must do something to help.

It was strange how such an adventure had brought out the leader in Simone.

"This man must stay! He is a good worker! He is dedicated to the service of the people of the Tirol!"

Herr Braun shivered in terror. The French officer and the Russian officer seemed to be talking about him.

Many were being shipped to Russia for "re education" which most likely meant the gulag or construcing the Baltic - White Sea Canal link.

"He may go with you Major de Bersac."

Andre beckoned towards Herr Braun.

Herr Braun was nearly in tears of joy as he headed towards the tricolore which was fluttering on the aerial of Andre's jeep.

Major de Bersac handed him a letter.

"Dear Herr Braun,

We write to send you and all our friends in Tirol our love and our deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones.

None of us can know what horrors you have faced under that evil man.

We thank God this dreadful war is over. We now hope the Russians can leave you in peace and one day we can return to the Tirol to be beside you and all our friends once more.

We know of those who are at peace now and with God, notably poor Herr Marani to name but one.

We shall meet again. We hope you have not forgotten us.

All our love,

Joey, Simone, Frieda and Marie."

Andre watched as the grizzled Tirolean folded the letter slowly, closed his eyes and wept.

"A letter! A letter! A letter from the Tirol! A letter!"

The Quartette were having another coffee again when Daisy bounded into the room waving the letter above her golden hair like a tomahawk.

"Daisy girl, stop that ridiculous wardance at once! You will smash all the crockery in the house and break all the windows if you go galumphing around like an elephant!"

"Sorry Auntie Joey!"

Daisy giggled and ran to rejoin the triplets.

"It's Herr Braun!

I know his writing anywhere!"

"Dear Joey, Simone, Frieda and Marie

I cannot tell you how I wept with relief to know that you are alive and well and that you are still thinking of us in the beloved Tirol.

It has been heartbreaking to live with monsters for over six years destroying everything we held dear, chasing good people out of their homes, violence, bloodshed and cruelty.

Simone, I owe your husband an immense debt of gratitude for saving me from the Russians. I feared going from one dictatorship to another.

I know from your Andre how you visited and saw at first hand the damage done to what was your home for many delightful years.

I can only imagine the shock with which you felt and that which Joey, Frieda and Marie must have felt when you told them.

The Sonnalpe was hardly touched, it was used as a military hospital and escaped much damage. The grave of Dr Russell's sister is undamaged as is that of others.

I want you to know that knowing you still think of us, we are rebuilding our lives in Tirol and the day will come when you return to us.

We pray for you and give thanks for you,

All of you.

Simone thank you for returning!

Herr Braun"

All four women sat calmy and silently, reflecting on their Tirol friends, those who had died, those who were missing and those who had survived and how they became stronger as a result.
