She looked. Looked at the picture in front of her. She joined hands with two others. The bonds were so strong between these sisters, identical faces, similar minds. They stared at the picture. They wished their hearts out, but it could not happen. They loved their aunt dearly but it wasn't - wasn't – couldn't be the same. They had cousins who they thought of as lucky. They had a mother, the person these sisters could not have. If she had had a small chance to live, maybe she would have… It was the one thing they wanted more than anything in the world. But it was one thing out of reach, impossible to get. They did not know what the names their mother wanted them to have, as they looked at the picture of her as a teenager. Joey, Cecilia and Marie had the names their aunt had given them because their mother had died in childbirth. They usually were happy and carefree, but when bad things happened they were the total opposite. Joey was rather like Joey in the way of naughtiness, she often played little tricks on other people, but these were often laughed off unless they actually were serious matters. Joey was fairly good at most subjects, deeply loathed Maths and Art, and loved History. Cecilia was very dreamy and was excellent at English, and acceptable for pretty much anything else. Marie had had a lot of trouble with her temper but she was getting better at controlling it. She was really good at everything except cooking and needlework, and that was why the girls in the Trips class disliked them: They were just too clever. The triplets liked their cousins they lived with; they liked their Auntie Madge, and the long but infrequent visits from their father. They liked their lessons generally, and they liked the Chalet School, with its honorary boards lining the hall. The trouble was the students in the Chalet School. The richer ones were snobbish and disliked anyone who got higher marks than they did. And some of them were bullies as well, and they had power over the non-snobs. But since the triplets hated snobbery and were resistant of any kind of bullying so they did not join in with the snob crowd. And it was there where the troubles lay in the triplets eyes. |

Emerence Hope was a shock to the whole school. A fire bug from Australia, she had more reason to be snobbish than most of the people in the school, but was far from it. She was a cheeky brat, and became friends with Joey and Marie quite quickly, but not much so with Cecilia, who didn't mind. Emerence was a good student at the start of term, but it had to give way eventually. One morning she was fed up with the snobbishness around her, and so she swore at one of the leader snobs. All the snobbish girls were shocked. the more timid girls who had joined because they were scared or bullied into it started hanging out with Emerence, which drew into a big group, bigger than the snobbish ones, at any rate. The people not involved with the snobbishness at all didn't like the language Emerence had used, but they told Emerence about it, then forgot about it, and joined forces with her to eradicate the real snobs. Cecilia did none of the above, and only knew about it when she suddenly noticed that Emerence was popular, but the bigger snobs weren't. the school was pleasurable again, until Miss Wilson gave a big announcement in Assembly one day. "The school is going to move again as soon as possible. We are hoping to find a place in the Alps somewhere. We might not be able to move back to Austria yet, because of the situation with Russia, but as soon as it is able we might return to our original setting, Mr Flower still owns the place and will hand it to us whenever he likes. There won't be any limitations to placing in our next home, however, there will still be a branch here for those of you whose parents don't wish you to go or cannot afford such a thing," The girls took to discussing this topic with vim and vigour over the coming weeks. |

Cecilia didn't talk about it. The place her mother had loved most dearly when she was a girl. It had suddenly struck her now to find out about the history of the school. She had an old notebook that she'd never used. Perfect. On the first page she wrote "The Chalet School," and on the next page the year the school had started. Then she stopped. She didn't know much about it. She made some list headings: Prefects, Pupils joined, pupils left, Mistresses joined, and Mistresses left. She hunted around, and asked people of the time about these things. When she finished with these she wrote a short description of what had happened, and turned the page. She did this all, and finally had a basic history of the school in her notebook. Cecilia took great care of the notebook. Her sisters weren't at all bothered about it. She started to dream about the days of Tirol, happy happy times they were. |

The next thing was Marie throwing a bookend at someone, who had suggested that she had pushed Joey into the water, where she was rescued by the unpopular new girl. Joey, who generally played tricks which occasionally ended up nasty, was not popular with many people, and was jealous that her triplet, who had a nasty temper, was more popular than she, or her other triplet, who was usually higher than the sky, was listened to when she made a good point. |
