Sorry it been so long. Work appears to be settling down and I’m getting used to doing something that is very different to what I’ve ever done before. I wish I had someone who could type as fast as I think or speak. Mentally I’m up to Jane and deciding how Madge handle’s Jack and who her mentor is now Len (aka Guita) is too old to do it and who Margot (aka Marya) throws a bookend at, mainly cos I want to see how Madge would handle the situation. And who do I have as Head Girl; Mary Lou or Elizabeth Russell- Hilda’s daughter who just so happens to be very like Hilda? Decisions, decisions; hope that’s enough tidbits to whet the appetite (or to torment you all with).

Madge was glad to get back to the school, as much as she loved her holiday, the Chalet school was home. Nell had had a quiet Christmas and New Year, with all those who had been left behind and Madge heard from various girls, the fun they had had with ‘Bill.’ Madge had gurgled when she heard all Nell had been up to, while everyone else was away and how it had been a group of middles who had to rescue her from a closet she accidently locked herself into, while they had been playing Hide and Seek.

“I don’t think I’ll ever live that down,” said Nell ruefully, when the two Heads and the Senior Mistress were together in the study.
“I will say Lonka Maico was pre-naturally solemn, when she let me out and was very gravely polite about it all- to my face that is. I think she forgot I could still hear her when she left the room and burst out laughing with Marie le Coudelec,” said Nell, “its one for the annals, anyway.”
“At least you’re able to laugh about it,” observed Therese smilingly.
“Oh it became the joke of the holidays,” returned Nell lightly. “It wasn’t until the end we all laughed about it together. They were so grave and serious about it with me, but would start giggling the moment I left, and I couldn’t help laughing at them.
Lonka informed me she wrote to Lorenz and told her they had managed to lock me in the closet during the holidays, so goodness knows what she thinks. Anyway, how were your holidays?”

“Good,” said Therese smiling. “Little Tessa decided I was far more fun than her parents in the morning and would come and wake me at six, every morning. ‘Wake up Gan-mere, it’s time to play.’ She would get in beside me until it was time to have breakfast. She is so sweet.”
“And the apple of your eye,” said Madge softly.
“Oh yes,” agreed Therese, “and Simone is so lovely to allow me that. With the Lecoutiers and Renee in Canada, Simone says I am the only family they have. So how was it with Great Uncle Tom?”
“Good,” replied Madge, “he wants Dick to help him run the estate and says he’ll be leaving the Quadrant to him.”
“How do you feel about that?” asked Nell.
“I’m happy for Dick,” said Madge softly. “It’s going to be hard enough to find work with only one leg, and there’s no way he’d be able to work in the Forestry out in India again.”
“No,” agreed Nell. “So when do they all move there?”
“At Easter,” said Madge.
“Did you want me to take the girls at Easter, so you’re free to help?” offered Therese.
“But you and Nell were planning on going away with Jeanne, Dollie and Mary,” objected Madge. “The five of you have had this planned for ages.”
“I can change my plans if you need it off,” pointed out Therese.
Madge shook her head. “Dick and Mollie sent all their furniture and things to Ireland as it was easiest. There wasn’t anywhere here to store them. I don’t think they’ll try to get it sent over while the War is on. Knowing their luck it’ll be bombed or something. There isn’t much to move and I think it’ll be nice for them to be a family again. The kids haven’t had their father for so long now.”
“The offer is there,” said Therese firmly, “if you do change your mind.”
“Thanks Elise, it is generous of you, but I couldn’t,” said Madge, little dreaming a day would come where she would bitterly regret saying those words.

“Now,” said Madge changing the subject. “Is there any other school news, other than you getting locked into a closet, Nell that we should know about?”
“We do have a new girl starting; her name is Lavender Leigh,” and Nell looked at them expectantly.
“That name sounds familiar,” said Madge puzzled. “Where have I heard it from?”
Nell positively smirked at her.
“She isn’t,” objected Madge, as it started to dawn on her exactly where she had heard the name from, for she had bought Bride the latest Lavender Laughs book for Christmas.
“She is,” said Nell. “Auntie Sylvia is being called up and Dr Marilliar has suggested she come here as a pupil. She doesn’t sleep well, is irritable and he thinks she needs a regular routine.”
Madge groaned when she heard this. “What did we do to Dr Marilliar to deserve this?”
“She will be alright when she settles in,” said Therese tolerantly. “What is she like Nell?”
“Rather inclined to what everything her own way and doesn’t cope well when it doesn’t go her own way,” said Nell judiciously. “From what I can tell, her work is up to Lower Third standard with a scrape, so she’ll be with Mollie Carew and Anne Montague and all that crowd.”
“And Bride,” realised Madge. “We decided to promote her at the end of last term as her work was head and shoulders above everyone else.”
“Then Bride can take her under her wing for a bit as they’ll both be new to the form,” suggested Therese, “and I don’t think there is anyone who Bride doesn’t get along well with.”
“She won’t love you for that,” chuckled Madge. “All I’ve heard from Bride all Christmas is the iniquities of being promoted away from all her friends and she informed me she wouldn’t have worked hard if it meant she was going to be promoted like this!”
“She’ll get over it,” said Nell tolerantly.

We have had Therese longer than EBD gave her, but she is so important to Madge that I do not want her even to be injured.

It was wonderful seeing everyone again. Joyce embarrassedly showed off her engagement ring.
“He’s a curator normally,” she explained, “but is now an army chaplain. Oh Madge, I’m so happy.”
Madge was thrilled for Joyce. “I’m so happy for you,” she said giving the girl a hug, “though we will miss you. When are you getting married?”
“Probably not until after the War is over,” said Joyce with a sigh. “We did talk about it, but Frank wants to have a proper wedding as he calls it and he wants to actually be with me when we’re married rather than having to dash off back to Europe.”
“I only hope he’s nicer than the curate we had when I was younger,” said Maidie with a grin, as she admired the ring.
“Why, what was he liked?” asked Gillian wide eyed.
“I think he was concerned about my younger brothers and sisters,” said Maidie considering, “and looking back at it all, I can see why, but at the time, I thought he was interfering where he wasn’t wanted. He did save my brother’s life and that does change how you see someone and he was really good about all the tricks my brothers played on him. He usually went one better.”
“Do you see him much now?” asked Polly interestedly.
“Oh yes,” said Maidie trying to hide a smile. “He married one of our very good friends and Rosamund and Maddie both love his family.”

Madge was amused when Bride came to visit her on the first day of term grumbling about the new girl.
“I cannot believe you promoted me,” said Bride in disgust. “I can’t believe you put me in Lower Third, away from everyone else and then,” and her voice rose in indignation, “you lumbered me with a spoilt brat of a new girl.”
“Well I hope you’re looking after her properly,” said Madge.
“Of course I am Auntie Madge,” said Bride, injured. “It’s just she always wants the attention because she’s Lavender Leigh, and you can’t keep talking about that all the time.”
“Well trot off and do give Lavender a chance Bride, please,” said Madge, “and don’t forget I’m Madame now.”
“That’s another thing,” grumbled Bride, “don’t you think holidays are so much nicer than being at school. I much prefer you as Auntie Madge.”
Madge started laughing, which Bride unwillingly joined in. “So do I, with you three and Biddy and Marie.”
“Peggy’s keeping an eye on Marie,” continued Bride, “even though Peg’s Upper Third and Marie’s in the Fourth. It must be horrible having both parents’ dead. I’m glad Dad’s still around even if he only has one leg.”
“So am I,” said Madge in heartfelt tones.
Bride glanced at her, “I better go to Prep, Biddy’s in charge tonight and she’s another I prefer in the holidays.”
“It’s her job to keep you in line,” said her aunt. “I know but does she have to be worst with me than anyone else.”
“That’s the joys of being family,” returned Madge hiding a smile. “Now scat, before I get in trouble with Biddy for holding you up.”
And Bride scrammed smiling at the thought of Madame being in trouble with the Head Girl.

That term jogged along comfortably, though Lavender did struggle to settle in. Things were made worse when an altercation in hockey which caused Anne Montague to be injured was blown up out of proportion. Lavender refused to apologise, causing every girl in her form to refuse to speak to her unless they had to. Madge watched with some anxiety for this could border on bullying if it went on for too long. The Prefects also noticed and Betty sent a heartfelt plea to the MacDonald twins to be nice to her. They were all staying at the school this term so the Maynards could have some time together and Flora and Fiona were discovering just how nice boarding school could be.

“Why should we be nice to her?” demanded Flora. “She was very mean to Anne and didn’t apologise to her when she hurt her.”
“I know,” said Betty with a sigh, “but sometimes people do and say and are sorry later even if they don’t show it.
“And it’s really hard being the person in the wrong when no one will talk to you,” said Betty in heartfelt tones.
The twins looked at each other; neither of them had really liked Lavender much. She had been horrible to Bride about her desk and about the Peace League and now this; but Betty had been kind to them, when Hughie died.
“All right,” promised Fiona at last, “we’ll try, it may not make much difference,” she warned. “I know,” said Betty, “but kindness can win someone around much better than not talking to them. Believe me I know.”
The twins tried and did make the occasional comment, much to the open surprise of all the girls.
“How could you talk to her after all she did to poor Bride and Anne?” asked Vanna reproachfully.
The twins looked at each other, neither of them wanted to say the truth which was Betty had asked them to.
“Because, I’m sure she feels terrible about it even if she doesn’t show it,” said Flora.
“And, just because she is mean, doesn’t mean we have to be like her,” added her twin. That stopped the others.
“She’s right,” said Bride gloomily. “We’d better or someone will come down on us for bullying and I don’t want to be any more like her, if I can help it.”
After this, Lavender found one or two of them would make the occasional remark. It wasn’t until Biddy had a few words to say on the subject at mending, were the other girls persuaded to follow suit. And things seemed to settle down for a time being.

The next excitement was Joey’s return home from the hospital. Madge felt slightly anxious about Joey’s return.
‘You’re being silly,’ she scolded herself. ‘Joey did apologise and Madge you’re a different person now; you know what she’s like.’
Madge wasn’t only concerned about her relationship with Joey and how she would go. The children had made such strides. Both Marya and Guita had had their difficult moments, but Marya was losing her temper less and less and was learning she couldn’t get her own way all the time. She was actually quite sweet when she wasn’t demanding her own way all the time. Guita was also learning to relax and have fun and seemed to worry less about her triplet sisters. At first it seemed like it was going to go well; Joey appeared grateful for all that had been done and the children loved having their mother home again.
“It’s been too long,” said Joey hugging each of her children in turn and allowing herself to be dragged off by each of the children to see their rooms and all their things. Madge happy, turned her attention back to the school in some relief.

It was Rosa it first alerted Madge what was really going on below the surface.
“Madame, may I see you please,” asked Rosa formally one day when Madge was relaxing in the study with Therese and Nell.
“Of course,” said Madge jumping up straight away and drew Rosa into her sitting room, while Nell and Therese tactfully left.
“What is it Rosa?” She asked concerned.
Rosa twisted her hands in her lap and looked down at her feet.
“I-I-I,” she stammered.
In all the years Madge had known Rosa, she had never seen her like this. Rosa had been a shy fifteen year girl when she first started working at the school. She had never particularly stood out; it was Marie who ran the school, that stood out, above every other maid; Marie. Marie, who Madge had turned to when she tried to understand the local’s customs, and ways, preventing Madge from offending so many people. She had been so grateful to Marie; she had helped build the school to what it was in the Tyrol, quietly and unobtrusively behind the scenes.
It wasn’t until Madge had taken on the care of Giovanni that she started to know Rosa. Rosa, quiet and gentle, shone caring for him. She seemed to know instinctively how to care for and raise children and Madge wished she could have given that role to Rosa more than what she had been able to. It had been that in mind, Madge had offered her the chance to work in the Nursery School and to become a kindergarten mistress. In the meantime, Rosa had offered to stay with Joey for a week, to help ease the children into being back with their Mother.
“Rosa, what’s worrying you?” asked Madge gently.
“It’s Mrs Telnarki,” blurted out Rosa, looking at her feet. “I’m, I’m worried about Nicky.”
“In what way?” queried Madge.
And little by little, Rosa stumbled through her concerns, how Joey didn’t seem to spend much time with Nicky, how she was starting to spoil Marya again and Marya was starting to play up, while Guita was looking more and more anxious again. It was Nicky who Rosa was most anxious about. She was so small and defenceless.
“It’s almost like Mrs Telnarki doesn’t want anything to do with her, that she is angry with her, though she does try to hide it. I think she blames Nicky for not being able to have any more children or Nicky reminds her of that time and she doesn’t want to have to face it and pretends it didn’t happen and if it didn’t happen, then Nicky doesn’t exist.”
“Oh Rosa,” breathed Madge and rubbed her eyes with her fingertips. “Thank you for telling me.”
She paused, “Rosa, why were you so worried about telling me. You do know I trust you completely with the children. I couldn’t imagine anyone I trust more than you, unless it’s Therese Lepattre.”
Rosa gave a slightly crooked smile. “I know and I also know you and Mrs Telnarki have had your differences over the years,” she said simply, “and you’re only just starting to resolve that. I hated having to tell you something that could make it worse. And however much I may argue or be angry with my sisters Luise or Marie, I would also fight anyone if they said anything bad about them.”
Madge closed her eyes; she had long suspected Marie knew all there was to know about her and Jem. She hadn’t wanted to leave Madge when she was marrying Anderas, had felt she would be siding with Dr Russell almost, until Madge told her she would miss her, but she was thrilled for Marie.
But of course, Rosa had travelled to Belsornia with them, that awful first trip, when Joey and Countessa Telnarki had been so nasty. But it made so much sense now; both Rosa and Marie had been so protective, so kind to her over the years, in such gentle, unobtrusive ways- and so fiercely loyal.
“Rosa, thank you for telling me this,” Madge said at last, “However, difficult my relationship is with Joey, Nicky shouldn’t be neglected.”
“Guita and Juliette are trying hard to fill the gap. Guita especially, but they are only six years old,” said Rosa starting to relax for the first time.
“I’ll talk to her,” repeated Madge, smiling reassuringly at Rosa, “Thank you. You have been wonderful for Nicky.”
Rosa nodded relieved and left, while Madge stood up and walked to the window.
‘When would this all end,’ she wondered. ‘And how on earth am I going to be able to broach this with Joey without her knowing that Rosa has talked to me?’

Madge is going to need all the tact and sensitivity she possesses if she is to tackle Joey about this without re-damaging the relationship between them. At the same time, however, she knows the present situation with Joey's children can't be allowed to continue, now that she knows about it. Thank goodness Rosa plucked up the courage to bring it to her attention.

Thanks, Fiona.

Lots and lots   I learnt off the master (aka Lesley)

Fortunately, or unfortunately, the decision was taken from her hands; Polly Heriot knocked on her study door.
“Polly,” said Madge with a smile.
“I’m truly sorry Madame,” said Polly looking distinctly harassed, “but Marya Telnarki is being difficult again.”
“How?” asked Madge steadily enough.
“She is being rude and insisting on her own way again. According to her she doesn’t have to do what she is told, because Mamma doesn’t make her and she’s the Headmistress sister and Auntie Madge will listen to her and not me,” said Polly
“What?” exclaimed Madge, “send her to me and I’ll disabuse her of that notion, here and now.”
Polly exhaled. “That’s not all,” she said. “I’m sorry Madge, but Guita tried to get Marya to listen and obey and Marya stamped her foot and threw a toy block at Guita. She ducked and it hit Meg O’Hara instead. Meg is alright, she did roar, when it happened, but Matey Lloyd saw to her and Marya wilted under her gaze fairly quickly.
“I think she was scared about what she had done, for no one, not even Guita defended her. She is apart from the rest of the children and Matey is with her as Meg, once she was checked over, wanted her mother.”
“Marya will need to be punished,” said Madge firmly. “She needs to be told that regardless of what her parent’s allow at home, we don’t allow that kind of behaviour her at school. How do you want to go about it, Polly?”
The two discussed long and hard before finally settling on exactly what Marya had to do.
“Apologise to both Guita and Meg,” said Polly. “Although she didn’t mean to hurt Meg, she did mean to hurt Guita.”
“And she needs to be separated from the others,” added Madge. “She needs to learn, that if she isn’t considerate and kind to others, she will be separated from them.”
“How long for?” asked Polly, “Two days? Two days of boredom. Is it too long for a six year old?”
“We can see how it goes after the first day,” said Madge. “It really depends on Marya.”

At first everything went well. Marya burst into tears when she saw Madge and apologised straight away without any prompting.
“I’m disappointed in your behaviour Marya, but I am very glad, you are sorry. You do realise you need to make things right with Meg and Guita,” said Madge seriously.
Marya nodded unwillingly, for she was a proud little mortal, who hated saying she was sorry. “Will you come with me?” she asked in a small voice.
“Of course,” said Madge kindly, somehow feeling better with the request; Marya obviously trusted her and knew she could turn to her for help.
She stumbled through her apology to them both, finding apologising to Meg, who was sitting on her mother’s knee, so hard. She never wanted to have to go through that again!

“Now,” said Madge, when that was done, “we do need to discuss what to do now.”
“Maybe I could make Meg and Guita something to really show them I’m sorry,” said Marya in a small voice. “Auntie Mollie used to get me to do that, when I hadn’t been nice to someone and so did Auntie Frieda.”
“I think that is a wonderful idea,” said Madge, mentally thanking both Frieda and Mollie for their tact. “You won’t be allowed back in the Nursery School for the next two days, instead you will be on your own with either me or another mistress.”
Marya nodded miserably, she loved Nursery School and hated the idea of not being allowed to go, but she knew she had been very naughty.
“I wish I was nicer,” she said leaning onto Madge’s side. Madge sat down and pulled the little girl onto her lap.
“You are a nice little girl, most of the time,” said Madge gently.
“But I feel so rageous at times and all I want to do is scream, and shout and throw something. How come Guita and Juliette never do?” asked Marya sniffing.
“I don’t know,” said Madge slowly, “everyone is different. What if the next time you feel rageous, you hit a pillow instead. We could asked Miss Heriot to have a special hitting pillow, which you can hit instead or isn’t there a block set where you can hit a peg into a hole,” suggested Madge trying to remember what toys the school had.
“I remember your Uncle Dick had one of those and I used to love hitting it, especially when I felt rageous. It made such a lovely noise and I would hit it as hard as I could with the hammer and I didn’t feel rageous any more after that.”
“You used to feel rageous too?” asked Marya interestedly.
“Yes, I used to,” said Madge laughingly. “I still do sometimes, but I usually play hockey or tennis and then I don’t feel so rageous, after hitting a ball.”
“So if I do that, would I end up as nice as you?” asked Marya cuddling into Madge.
“Probably nicer, but you do have to work on it, and it will be hard at first,” said Madge, “but will you promise me one thing?”
“What?” asked Marya.
“Will you come and see me before doing anything else?” asked Madge seriously. “We can set that up with Miss Heriot, so that when you feel rageous and hitting a peg into a hole or hitting a pillow isn’t helping, you can say I need to see Auntie Madge and she’ll let you. Would you do that?”
And Marya nodded.

Miss Heriot was very amendable to the suggestion and even organised a corner in the room where Marya could go to do exactly that. She wasn’t the only one to use the corner and anyone who felt angry or upset would go there until they felt better. Joey when she found out what had happened had plenty to say about the subject.
“Marya is being very good about the whole thing,” said Madge simply. “She knows she hurt Meg O’Hara and she knows she could have hurt Guita. Don’t you care that Guita could have been hurt and that Meg was?”
“I-I-I,” stammered Joey, feeling wrong footed about the whole thing. “But two days,” she said, “it seems too harsh. And she’s only little.”
“It’s not too harsh,” said Madge. “I think you should be able to trust me to not be too harsh with any of the girls at the Chalet School. Marya needs to learn the consequences of her actions or she may truly hurt someone and I don’t think anyone deserves that, least of all Marya. Do you really want your daughter to turn into someone who is callous and uncaring?”
“She may not even make her adult years,” said Joey her eyes brimming with tears, for she carried the pain of that knowledge with her, unable to let it go even when it was clear, Marya was well and truly over her babyhood delicateness.
“Marya is a fighter,” said Madge smiling a little, “if you want to worry about any of your children, I think you should about Nicky. She’s lucky to be alive from all the doctor has said.”
“Then why won’t you let Rosa look after her any more?” questioned Joey, her voice slightly accusatory.
“Because you have had so much time away from her,” said Madge lightly, trying to keep a tight rein on her temper. “I thought you would prefer that.”
“I –it doesn’t matter,” said Joey brushing away tears which threatened to fall.
“Joey,” said Madge her voice soft, and she reached out to her sister. Joey shook her arm off and walked away.
Madge gazed after her worriedly; she wasn’t hurt by Joey’s action, but she was deeply concerned. Madge wondered what she was really thinking, but Joey no longer seemed to be able to talk to her any more. It was as though all that had been said and done between them got in the way of rebuilding their relationship. It was Wanda who knew instinctively what to say and stepped in.

Wanda’s very gentleness helped Joey to relax enough to talk about how she felt and she poured out all her pain: of losing the chance to have any more children; of losing those first few months with Nicolette, to the point Nicky did not feel like her own daughter; and just how much she missed Nicolai and how much she hated going through all this away from him. Wanda didn’t judge and instead sympathised until Joey herself reached the point where she could see how much she had to be thankful for.
“Madge and Mollie have been wonderful,” said Joey, “and I know I’m lucky to have five children; it seemed almost selfish to be upset that I can’t have any more, especially when some people can’t have any, but I couldn’t help crying about it.”
“It’s alright to cry about it,” said Wanda placing her hand over Joey’s. “I wept for little Hildy, when she died and I could have more and still had little Keferl and Maria Ileana. It is alright to grieve. You are facing a loss; if you don’t grieve, it will hurt you inside.”
Joey’s eyes brimmed with tears and she wept unashamedly on Wanda’s shoulder, until, tears spent, she was able to start to move forward.
“I feel better,” she said afterwards. “Oh Wanda, thank you.”
It took time, but Joey was gradually able to move through her grief. But the awkwardness between Madge and Joey remained.

The school had a spate of snowy weather and the girls struggled with being cooped up indoors. Spats broke out between Upper and Lower Third as the forms divided into groups, led by Joy Bird and Peggy Bettany. It did bring about some good things Madge reminded herself. Lavender was firmly drawn into a friendship with Bride, Anne Montague, Elfie Woodward and Primrose Day. When the weather finally broke Madge sent the girls off in their form groups for a long walk in the hope it would knock the fidgets out of everyone and the girls would settle down. It did, but not before Lavender was buried alive in the snow, after being leapt upon by Joy in the middle of a snowball fight. Joy had come to her senses and enabled the mistresses to rescue Lavender, but, and Madge shuddered at the thought of what might have been. It had been Therese Lepattre who had managed to help Joy and Lavender resolve their differences.

Lavender was enjoying her few days in the San. It had been scary falling into the snow like that. Matron Venables was lovely and had built a fire in the fireplace. She spent time chatting with Lavender during the day whenever she was free. Mademoiselle Lepattre also dropped by to visit regularly. She only taught a few classes but was always available for the girls to come and talk to.
“We call her Grandmere,” explained Bride to Lavender one day. “I love Mademoiselle, she tells all these stories of when she was at school in France and she’s so nice. You can tell her anything and know she won’t come over all Headmistressy. Madame is different- she has to come over all Headmistressy and she’s worse with her wards and me and Peg. It isn’t fair,” and Bride’s voice had raised in indignation when she had said this.
Lavender enjoyed hearing all about Mademoiselle as a little girl in a convent school.
“Did you find it hard when you went to school?” she asked.
“Sometimes it was. I remember when my best friend and I fought one day. We were usually inseparable and now we would not even look at each other. I was miserable for a week,” said Mademoiselle.
“Neither of us wanted to be the first to make it up to the other one. Maman decided she was going to do something about it as I had been moping around the house for a week. She invited Sabine and her family over for dinner and then told her and I that we were doing all the cooking. In our foolishness, we refused to talk to each other and dinner was a disaster. Our mothers scolded us, so badly and afterwards we started being friends together in commiseration. I don’t think we were ever so silly again.”
“What did you argue about?” asked Lavender interestedly.
“I told some of the others about what Sabine had done, that she was embarrassed about. She was so hurt when she found out that it was I who had told everyone. I was so sorry for what I had done and did not know how to tell her,” explained Mademoiselle softly.
“Did you ever apologise?” asked Lavender going very still, for Mademoiselle had started to make her think.
“It took me quite a few days and I had to apologise to her about being scolded for the dinner; it was my fault we weren’t talking and therefore a disaster,” said Mademoiselle looking sad. “I always wished I had apologised sooner for it took awhile for our friendship to go back to how it was. I could always see Sabine thinking can she trust me, will I hurt her again, until I did apologise.”
Did you ever become good friends again?” asked Lavender in a small voice.
“Oh yes,” said Mademoiselle. “I wanted to make it up to her, so I made sure I could honour her in some way to show her how much she meant to me, so on her birthday, I organised so many surprises for her during that day. It was so much fun; it was like a treasure hunt and Sabine had to follow the clues to find her surprise at the end. When she reached the end, I said this is for you Sabine, because you will always be my best friend. And I was always so very careful after that, to never say anything that would hurt Sabine again.”
“Could I?” asked Lavender still in that small voice, “for Anne. I was so mean to her, when I hurt her hand in hockey and she’s been so nice to me since and has never said anything. I wish I could do something,” ended Lavender hopelessly.
“I think we could find a solution together,” said Mademoiselle, her voice very kind. “Now you must go to sleep Lavender, for I see Matron Venables coming to shoo me away. Good night ma petite,” said Mademoiselle, giving her a kiss goodnight. And Lavender snuggled down under the blankets thinking hard about everything Mademoiselle said and wondering what she was going to do about Anne –and Joy.

Joy stuck her head into the San the next day.
“Would it be alright if I visited Lavender?” she asked Matron Venables timidly.
Matron Venable smiled at the tall girl before her. “Of course,” she said. “I’m sure Lavender would love to have a visitor. It’s pretty lonely for her being in the San.”
Joy walked reluctantly to Lavender’s room.
“Hi,” she said flatly.
Lavender looked up from the fire and knew whatever else she had been thinking; it was time to make a decision.
“Are you going to tell anyone?” Joy asked gruffly.
“Am I going to tell anyone, you pushed me into a snow drift?” asked Lavender directly.
Joy nodded hardly daring to speak. If only Lavender could be persuaded not to say anything, oh how she’d really try after this, but if she didn’t then, she knew she would be in serious trouble with Madame.
“No,” said Lavender thinking about everything Mademoiselle had said to her. “No, I’m not.”
“Why not?” asked Joy, who had been certain Lavender would have told on her. She would have if the situations were reversed.
“Because I’m not,” was all the answer she got.
“Are you going to hold it over me?” demanded Joy, “for let me tell you, if you are, then you can tell Madame right here and right now.”
“Are you mad?” said Lavender staring, “of course I’m not going to do that.”
“Then why?” asked Joy bursting into tears and she sat down on Lavender’s bed burying her head in her hands, crying. Lavender drew her legs up.
“Don’t cry Joy. I haven’t been particularly nice at times to people and Anne Montague was to me, that’s why; only it sounded rather mad, that’s why.”
“Do you mean it?” asked Joy lifting her hands off her face.
“Of course,” said Lavender nodding her head vigorously.
“I just thought I would do anything, if only no one found out; I would really try and maybe, just maybe I could do well here. I never seem to before,” explained Joy.
“Maybe we can help each other,” suggested Lavender.

“I think that’s a wonderful idea,” said a new voice at the door and the girls looked up to see Mademoiselle standing there.
‘Oh, how much had she heard,’ thought Joy desolately. ‘I should have known it was too good to be true.’
Mademoiselle guessed her thoughts. “Joy,” she said gently, placing a hand on the girls shoulder, “I don’t think we need to say anything more. You and Lavender have worked things out and if you truly want to try, I will help you both too.”
“How?” asked Lavender curiously.
“I think perhaps I should become a governess again,” said Mademoiselle, her eyes twinkling.
“What do you mean?” Asked Lavender perplexed. “Why would you want to do that?”
“I think perhaps I teach the both of you girls together for this week in the San. We may say to anyone who asks, that you are bored Lavender and that Joy is more upset about the accident than she has said and a week of quietness in the San is exactly what she needs.
Perhaps, by the end of this week, you will have you feet firmly fixed where you should be going. Do you agree?” Asked Mademoiselle smiling.
Both girls nodded, Joy somewhat reluctantly.
“It will be more fun than you think Joy,” reassured Mademoiselle, “and we will help Lavender put things right at the end of the week with those she needs to put things right with.”
“And me?” asked Joy in a small voice remembering all the girls she had fought with that week and thinking that maybe a week with Lavender in the San wouldn’t be so bad.
“And you if you wish,” agreed Mademoiselle. “I have one or two ideas for Lavender, which will work for you as well.”
“Now off you go and collect your things and I will tell Madame you will be spending a week in the San, don’t worry,” she added gently, when Joy paused at the door, “she trusts me and won’t ask any questions.”

Mademoiselle was proved right and Madge although curious said nothing except for offering to be a visiting mistress, when Mademoiselle was due to teach on Wednesday morning, which Mademoiselle accepted.
“That would be wonderful,” she said.
“Do you know, this reminds me of the Greenacres school?” said Madge laughingly, “do remember, when I had the Christopher’s, and Mary and Rosalie and Grizel for the week, when the school pipes had burst?”
“I do,” said Mademoiselle, “and I was a visiting mistress and the rector was a visiting master.”
“Goodness that takes me back. Now I really will have to think of something fun for the girls to do,” said Madge.
Mademoiselle returned to the San, to find two girls sitting on the bed discussing things.
“We’ve decided to call our school la petit lycee, the little school,” said Lavender entranced at the idea of playing school. “It’s in honour of you being French and in charge of it.”
“In that case,” said Mademoiselle cheerfully, “we should play a game in French. How about I spy? The two acquiesced and soon the room rang with laughter as they tried to think of the French for I spy.”

Post subject:  Re: Margaret Bettany: Headmistress Part 3 Updated 19/11

It was a fun week and Joy found she enjoyed herself more than she thought she would.
“I wish I could come,” grumbled Bride when she heard about it on the Wednesday night and Lavender was telling her she and Joy had acted out their history and it was so much fun pretending to be the characters from history, especially when Joy had to chop of the Queen’s head and Mademoiselle was the Queen.
“We never get to do anything fun like that.”

Even Madame entered into the fun and gave one of her delightful lectures of Shakespearian times, a lecture she normally reserved for the Seniors.
“I wish we could see a play like that,” said Lavender, when she had finished. “It would be so much fun, don’t you think?”
“I don’t know if I’d want rotten fruit thrown at me just because the audience weren’t enjoying the play,” said Joy decidedly. “Did they really speak like that Madame? How did language change so much over the years?”
“I think you had better ask Mademoiselle that question,” laughed Madame, “she is the language mistress,” and the two girls groaned at Madame’s joke.
“I don’t know,” admitted Madge, “I think that is a subject studied at University. However, I could hazard a guess. Most people try and find a language for their generation. For example, slang has changed since the start of the Chalet School. When the school started girls would say topping and absolutely it, now they say super or smashing and in another ten years it’ll be different again. Add in the different classes and regions, languages will take on different variations. And Shakespeare did write a few hundred years ago.”
“I wonder if he knew he would be considered one of the great writers in the future?” questioned Joy reflectively. “I mean he only wrote for the masses and yet, his writing is held up as something wonderful now. And yet back then, it wasn’t, not by everyone.”
“I don’t think so,” said Lavender. “Think about how many books that were popular when –when our parents were young, that aren’t popular any more. I wonder what makes a book great or make someone want to read it hundreds of years later.”
“I think that is a discussion for another day,” laughed Madge, “and I see it’s nearly lunchtime.”

“Stay for lunch,” begged Lavender and Joy, “please, and you could tell us about the school, when you first started it.”
“Alright,” agreed Madame with a twinkle in her eye. “I’ll tell you about when the Middles decided to speak Shakespearian in retaliation for not being allowed to speak slang.”
She told the story and when she was finished Lavender drew in a breath. “I would hate to read all that Shakespeare she said. He’s so hard to understand....”
“And so boring,” supplemented Joy.
“I don’t think he’s for everyone,” agreed Madame amused, “and I don’t know many people who read Shakespeare for fun except perhaps Mrs Russell, who used to teach English here. She could quote reams of it.”
“Can you?” asked Joy interestedly
Madame laughed, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day. Thou art more lovely and temperate. Rough winds to shake the darling buds of May. And summer’s lease has all to short a date.”
Madame went on, until she had recited the full poem. “It was one of the first poem’s I ever learnt, she said, back when I was about twelve or thirteen.”
“And you can remember it for this long,” stated Joy awestruck.
“It took me long enough to learn it,” said Madame reminiscently. Not saying the poem had been by way of punishment for whispering in class. “Now, I really do need to get going. Thank you both for a lovely lunch.”

“I like being part of La Petit Lycee,” said Joy after Madame left. “It’s been fun. I don’t think I’ll ever be really scared of Madame again; she’s nice.”
“Mmmhmm,” said Lavender who was thinking.
“What?” asked Joy looking at her friend.
“Do you remember when Madame was talking about running that small school at Greenacres, before she even started the Chalet School?” queried Lavender slowly.
“Yes why?” asked Joy staring.
“Do you remember the party they had at the end of it with the X-nigh-puss and they all had to do a labour and then got to have a feast at the end of it?” asked Lavender.
“What if we did something like that and invited everyone we need to say we’re sorry to,” continued Lavender. “I could ask Anne Montague and –and Judy Rose and Bride cos she’s been so decent to me.”
“And I could ask Peggy,” said Joy slowly. “I need to apologise to Anne and Bride too. And I could ask Hester, cos she has been a good friend in trying to keep me calm especially when I haven’t felt like it. If we give them a fun night, it might make them more inclined to be friends and we can say we’re sorry in our invitations and that we want to make it up to them with this party.”
Mademoiselle, when she returned to start afternoon school found them hard at work planning for the party.
“What’s all this?” she asked smiling at the pair and they told her.
“What do you think?” Asked Lavender breathlessly.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” said Mademoiselle warmly and entered into the fun of planning for it.

The party was fun and all the girls invited appreciated the gesture, though Anne and Bride gently punched Lavender’s shoulder and told her not to be such an idiot, that they had forgiven and forgotten everything. Judy Rose had been touched that Lavender had apologised for making a fuss over the accident with the Hockey and Anne and Bride, told Joy not to be an idiot, of course neither of them were upset over an argument that had happened ages ago. Mademoiselle was pleased everything had gone well and all the girls had fun.
“I think having La Petite Lycee reminded me of why I became a teacher in the first place,” she said later, when she, Margot Venables and Madge were relaxing in the study. “I think Joy and Lavender have put things right and will hopefully continue to do well.”
“Thanks to you,” said Madge with a smile for Therese.

The term continued along peacefully enough. Joy and Lavender’s friendship continued to grow and the pair encouraged each other to work hard. The school was joined mid-term by a small girl from Kashmir, who had turned out to be an old friend of Lavender. She seemed to bring out the best in Lavender and Lavender in turned comforted Lilamani when her mother died at the San. Jem and Hilda were made temporary guardians until Lilamani was able to travel back to her family in Kashmir.

The girls rejoiced when Grizel gave birth to a small son, whom she and Jack named Robert John for his father and uncle. It was a bittersweet time for old Mrs Maynard died a few days after her grandson was born. Grizel though sad, was glad old Mrs Maynard was able to meet and hold her grandson. Bob and Lydia were thrilled and touched, little Robbie had been named for Bob and the baby seemed to give Bob a new lease of life. The two little girls doted on their baby brother.

The school started to get excited about the upcoming Easter holidays. They weren’t the only ones. The mistresses were looking forward to the break as well.
“I can’t wait for the holidays,” said Mary Burnett tossing down the last of the exercise books down.
“Who’s staying here?” asked Honey Raphael handing around the tea and coffee to everyone. “Me, Hilary and Madge,” answered Bette. “Are you going away with Nell and the others?”
Honey shook her head. “My old governess is coming to visit this Easter and I would love to catch up with her. Nell did ask. I think Mary, Jeanne, Dollie and Therese are all going.”
“Tessa won’t be happy about that,” said Jeanne with a smile at Therese.
“Her Papa is coming home for a few days leave and I think Tessa will be more than happy to see him,” laughed Therese, “though I have invited Simone and Tessa to meet us of the last day or two, if she would like to.”
“And I’ve invited Gillian, Joyce and Polly to join us,” said Mary Burnett. “Gill and Joyce are helping Polly to sort out Mr Wilmont’s house with her. She didn’t feel up to it at Christmas.”
“It seems like we’ll have a few people coming,” said Jeanne cheerfully

Soon everyone parted ways for Easter. Simone offered to drive Therese and the luggage to the station, while all the others elected to walk.
“We won’t all fit,” said Nell decidedly, “and Therese is your cousin, so it’s only fair she gets to ride with you.”
“And I don’t have the legs to walk,” retorted Therese good naturedly
Simone drove Therese to the train station.
“I’ll see you in a few days,” said Simone kissing her cousin good-bye. “Have a wonderful holiday.”
“I want to go too,” said Tessa look woebegone at her Gan-mere. “Please, I come too Gan-mere?”
“In a few days,” promised her Gan-mere. “You and Mamma will come and see us then, with Auntie Joyce and Auntie Gillian.”
“I want it to be now,” said Tessa pounting.
“Say good bye Tessa,” said her Mother, “and give Gan-mere a kiss good-bye.”
Tessa hugged her Gan-mere and gave her a sloppy kiss.
“I love you Gan-mere.”
“I love you too, cherie,” said Therese, touching Tessa’s cheek, and the two waved and blew kisses until they could no longer see each other.

“Does anyone know why we’ve all been called back early?” asked Pam Slater dropping into her chair in the staff room.
“I couldn’t believe it when I got the wire from Madame asking for me to return so early. Thank goodness the wedding was over and I could get away.”
Hilary Burn looked at her gravely; she had spent the holidays at the school and knew all there was to know.
“Trust me, Madge has a good reason for doing this.”
Pam looked at Hilary curiously.
“What is it?” she asked. “You seem to know all about.”
Hilary shook her head, her throat tight, she didn’t want to break down; she had been doing that so much lately; they all had. Maidie Clitheroe wheeled her chair in with a sigh.
“Back hurting?” asked Honey gently.
Maidie nodded. “It’s aching a bit more than usual,” said Maidie. “I’m glad Madge called us back a little earlier, my family’s fussing was getting too much.”
“I’m sorry you back’s hurting,” said Honey, giving Maidie’s hand a squeeze. “My family still think I’m eight years old,” said Honey making a face. “I am disappointed though; Miss Christopher our old governess was coming to visit, so I’ll miss seeing her.”
“Perhaps, she’ll visit you here,” consoled Maidie.
“I hope so,” said Honey with a sigh. “Kits is a lot of fun.”

Madge came in, a completely different Madge to the Madge who had seen them off the previous term. Hilary bit her bottom lip. She knew what was about to be said. It just wasn’t fair. Bette di Bersetti gazed stoically in from of her.
“Madge what is it?” asked Pam Slater urgently, “you look terrible.”
Madge lifted her hand up and pushed her hair off her face, before sitting down; this was not going to be an easy meeting.
“I do have some bad news,” she said steadily. “Nell Wilson, Therese Lepattre and the others were involved in a nasty bus accident.”

It had been an awful week. Madge had been outside playing hockey with all the girls left behind. Marya had begged for Madge to teach her. She was having a difficult day.
“I just feel rageous all the time, Auntie Madge and you said hockey would help,” she said. Madge kept a straight face, though she was dying to laugh inside and agreed to teach her. She had been surprisingly adept for a six year old and could certainly hit the ball. Madge kept tapping it back to her. Fairly soon though Giovanni joined in and following him, girls drifted over in dribs and drabs. They couldn’t play a proper game, but everyone was having fun anyway.
“Phone for you Madge,” said a breathless voice and Madge looked up to see Hilary sprinting towards her.
“It’s Simone and she sounds upset.”
Madge nodded and started back to Pretty Maids, leaving Hilary in charge of the girls, wondering why Simone was calling.
“Simone what is it?” she asked when she picked up the phone.
“Its cousin Elise,” gasped Simone. “Oh Madge, please come, they’ve all been injured. We’re at St Arvan’s cottage hospital. The bus overturned, please Madge, please come.”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” said Madge gently realising at once something was terribly wrong for Simone was close to breaking point and couldn’t say much more.
“Thank you,” gulped Simone.
Madge, after a brief word to Bette di Bersetti who was in one of the Common Rooms with the girls who weren’t feeling energetic, left to see Giovanni, Biddy and Marie to explain she would need to go away for a day or two, before leaving for the train.

She was walking to the hospital after getting directions at the train station, when a car tooted its horn at her.
“Madge, Madge,” yelled a voice, “hop in, I’ll give you a lift.”
Madge turned and was startled to see Jem waving from his car.
“Joyce called and told me,” explained Jem. “I’m assuming someone did the same for you.” “Simone,” she managed. “Did Joyce tell you much?
“She said Gill was trying to call Mary’s family, to tell them and Polly was flitting between the others. She said they wouldn’t tell her much, but she thought Mademoiselle looked pretty bad and Dollie Edward’s leg was at a funny angle at the accident.
“She said Gill and Polly were alright and she had a nasty cut on her forehead, and though they’ve bandaged it, they haven’t had a chance to stitch it. She said she was okay, but Hilda said she didn’t sound like it, so I thought I’d come down.
“Mrs Linton asked Hilda and I to keep an eye on the girls. I know Gillian was made guardian of Joyce, but we do feel responsible for them.”
“And they did live with you for three or four years, it would give you a family feeling for them,” added Madge, thinking Jem sounded like he was apologising for being there.
“I’m glad you’re here,” said Madge simply. “It’ll be nice having someone here with me.”

Polly was sitting outside the front of the hospital. Jem stopped the car with a nod. “I’ll go park this and see you inside.”
“Madge,” said Polly with a gulp and ran towards her. Madge could tell at a glance something was terribly wrong and knew whatever happened, she needed to stay calm. Madge hugged the girl.
“What happened Polly?” asked Madge gently.
“The steering of the bus went and it hit a wall and turned,” explained Polly. “Simone, Tessa, Gill, Joyce and I were all sitting on the side the bus turned on, so all of us are alright, more all less.
“Joyce has a nasty cut on her forehead, but the doctors haven’t had a chance to stitch it up, so Gill bandaged it for her, to stop the bleeding. It looks worse than it is. They’ve taken Dollie off to surgery for her leg.
“Nell has been arguing with the doctor’s to try and find out what has happened to everyone. She finally got them to tell her, but they won’t tell us about Mademoiselle, even though Simone is family.
“Oh Madge,” and Polly turned haunted eyes onto Madge, “it was awful. Mademoiselle looked so awful. Tessa kept trying to get her to wake up and kept shaking her shoulder, asking her to wake up, until Simone picked her up, so the ambulance could see to her.” Madge hugged her again, thinking Polly looked terrible as she relived the experience.
“Dr Russell is here. He’ll be able to get the doctors to tell us what’s wrong,” said Madge reasurringly.

Madge was deeply thankful Joyce had called Jem. He managed to get through to the other doctors and find out exactly what everyone’s injuries were. He looked grave and told Madge the truth.
“They’re worried about Dollie and her leg. Compound fractures are nasty and they do need to operate. Everyone else has injuries that will heal, though it’ll take awhile.”
“And Therese,” asked Madge, past the lump in her throat.
Jem looked at Madge; he knew how much Therese meant to her.
“Madge, there’s no easy way to say this; Therese has slipped into a coma; her head injuries are too severe and there is nothing they can do for her, especially with her heart condition. They don’t think it’ll be long before she.... I am so sorry Madge,” said Jem.
Madge turned away looking exhausted and rubbed her face with her hands. “May we see her please?”
Jem nodded. “I think they’ve finished running all their tests; it shouldn’t be a problem, but I’ll see what I can do.”

Madge didn’t know what Jem said, but soon Simone and Madge were taken to a small room, where Therese was lying still in the bed, looking deathly pale. She looked like Therese, but she didn’t. Madge slipped her arm around Simone. Simone stood there with tears dripping down her face.
“Would you like to be alone Simone,” asked Madge gently and Simone shook her head wordlessly. Madge guided Simone to the two chairs by Therese’s bed.
They sat there for what felt like an eternity until Therese LePattre died. Simone stared at her trying to hold back tears.
“It’s alright to cry Simone,” murmured Madge and the two women held each other and wept. After all the tears were spent, Simone looked at Madge,
“I think I would like to see Tessa. Poor Tess, she been through so much today and I’ve neglected her.”
“I’m sure she’ll understand,” said Madge softly.

When they joined Gill and Polly, Simone lifted her daughter up and hugged her.
“I’m so sorry I left you alone Cherie,” she murmured.
“Joyce is off getting her head stitched,” explained Gillian in undertone to Madge.
Tessa snuggled into her mother. “Where’s Ganmere, Maman?” she asked, her bottom lip trembling.
“Ganmere, Ganmere is,” repeated Simone before turning imploring eyes onto Madge. “Ganmere has gone to Heaven,” said Madge gently.
“Why,” asked Tessa.
“Tessa,” said Madge softly. “Ganmere has died and when people die, they go to Heaven.”
“But I don’t want her to go, there. I want her to be here with me,” insisted Tessa, starting to cry.
“I know Cherie,” murmured Simone. “I wish she could be here too, but Ganmere was so badly hurt and the doctor’s couldn’t help her get better.”
“I wish they could get her better,” said Tessa and burst into tears.
Simone hugged her daughter murmuring endearments to her. Tessa’s tears were eventually soothed, while Simone looked exhausted.
“I think you need to have a rest in bed,” said a gentle voice and Madge turned to see an older nurse looking at them. “I do apologise for not being able to see to you sooner.”
Simone nodded. “That sounds wonderful. I do feel tired and I don’t think Tessa will settle unless I stay with her.”
“Would you like me to tell everyone Simone,” offered Madge gently, while Simone nodded. “Would you?” She asked thankfully. Madge nodded.

She went from bed to bed and told everyone what had happened, only to find out Jem had already told them it was unlikely Therese Lepattre would live past today. It made it easier in some ways for Madge struggled to say the words: Therese is dead. Yet it was harder in others, as the others looked to her for comfort when she desperately wanted comfort for herself.
Nell Wilson broke down, something that shocked Madge to her core. Nell never broke down like this.
“I wish I had never suggested this blasted trip,” said Nell hoarsely. “What possessed me? If I hadn’t, Therese would still be alive.”
“Or if I had accepted her offer to stay at the school over Easter,” said Madge wearily and Nell stared at her in surprise.
“I’m sure I’ll kick myself for that, for a long time to come. Nell it’s not your fault; nor mine and I know Therese would be the first to tell us both that.”
“I know, but it doesn’t make it any easier,” said Nell, and the two looked at each other in silent understanding.
“Let’s talk about something else instead. I’m not ready to talk about this yet,” said Nell.
“Alright,” agreed Madge and turned the discussion to the school realising it would be easier for them both to focus on practical things for awhile.
“I’m worried about Elizabeth Arnett and her exam this term for the Oxford prize,” said Nell. “She really needs someone who knows science to help her with the last of it.”
She sighed. “I’d hate for her chances at this prize to be ruined because of this.” She fell silent before suddenly speaking again.
“Ask Bette to do it. All the notes and information is there and Bette will make sure, Elizabeth will know it all and do well. Goodness knows who you will find to replace us all.”
“I haven’t even begun to think of that yet,” said Madge, “but I’m sure we’ll sort it all out. You get well again and I don’t want you worrying about the school. We’ll manage,” and Madge’s voice took on an authoritive note. “You’re to concentrate on getting well again.”
“I’ll try,” said Nell leaning back in her bead wearily.
“I promise, I’ll keep you updated and tell you how everything is going at the school,” said Madge. “We’ll manage. The Chalet School is tougher than it looks,” causing Nell to give a faint grin.
“I know it is,” was all Nell said.
“Now the nurse looks like she wants me to leave,” said Madge gently. “And Nell, I am so thankful you will be alright; I couldn’t have borne it if something happened to you as well.”
“Thanks Madge,” said Nell, with tears in her eyes and Madge gave her a hug, and Nell clung to her fiercely, before letting her go.

Madge stood outside the hospital and took a deep breath in. It had been a long day. All of a sudden she felt a deep longing for the Robin and Biddy and Giovanni. She just wanted to hold her ‘children’ close and reassure herself that yes they were all still alive and well. Frieda had arrived unexpectedly in the late afternoon.
“Polly rang me,” she said by way of explanation. “She said Simone needed me.”
Frieda had been wonderful with Simone and Tessa. She seemed to know instinctively what to say or do and let Simone talk or cry as she needed to.

The hospital had insisted on keeping all those in the accident overnight.
“They’re all in bed now and they need their rest,” said the nurse on the ward. “I know you want to be with them, but believe me they also need to sleep. It’s amazing how healing sleep can be.”
The three acquiesced and left after promising to return the next day. Jem insisted on Madge and Frieda having something to eat.
“You both need to,” he said insistently, “and I know you don’t feel like it Madge, but you need to eat something, even if it’s only a sandwich and a cup of tea.”
Madge nodded and accepted the food even though she felt like it would choke her. Once she finished she left to get some fresh air; Jem and Frieda followed.
“Do you two ladies mind if I smoke?” he asked, when they were outside. Both of them shook their heads.
“Madge,” Jem said quietly, “would you mind if I take Gillian, Joyce and Polly home with me. Hilda would look after them and I think they could do with a few days rest. I know you probably need them to sort out next term, but....”
“They could do with the rest first,” finished Madge quietly. “I think Simone and Tessa will need the same. It’s going to be difficult enough to try and organise a funeral, but to do so on top of the shock of the bus accident.”
“Why don’t I take Simone and Tessa to Gisela’s and Gottfried’s,” offered Frieda. “My parents are there with them. I’m sure Simone wants her own parents, but Mamma and Papa would be so comforting.”
“Oh Frieda that sounds wonderful,” said Madge.
“Why don’t you go too?” suggested Jem gently.
“I can’t,” said Madge with a sigh. “I need to tell the school and there’s Giovanni, Biddy and Marie to consider.”
Jem said no more, but made up his mind to ask his sister Margot to keep a close eye on Madge.

Telling everyone at the school on her return had been so hard. She had been Grandmere to so many of the girls. Madge phoned Ted and asked him to tell the Robin. Robin had travelled down to the school, arriving the next day.
“I just had to come,” she said simply.
Madge said nothing her throat tight and hugged the girl, not wanting to let her go.
“I’m glad you’re here,” said Madge trying to smile at the girl.
“I keep reminding myself that death is falling asleep and waking up in God’s presence,” said Robin simply. “Remember?”
Madge nodded; she remembered telling Robin that when Herr Arnofli, the madman who had died in the salt caves, back when Grizel had been Head Girl.
“It’s so good to see you Robin,” said Madge hugging her again. “How long can you stay?” “I’ll stay for the funeral,” said Robin, “but then I’ll need to go back to Oxford.”
Madge nodded. Biddy was thrilled to see her and ran to her. The pair clung to each other. “You came,” choked Biddy. “How did you know I wanted you?”
“Because I wanted you too,” replied Robin simply.

Madge sighed, as hard as the last few days had been; everyone had drawn closer together because of it, but Madge was dreading telling the rest of the school, when they came back.

Post subject:  Re: Margaret Bettany: Headmistress Part 3 Updated 25/11

It was a difficult staff meeting and everyone was understandably upset when they heard the news. After the first initial news, everyone grimly held it together and went through everything they would need to organise in readiness for the term. Madge felt better once they had discussed everything. Joyce organised the advertisements for the papers and offered to go through the agencies.
“Are you sure you’ll be alright to work?” asked Madge anxiously looking at the dressing on her head.
“Oh yes,” said Joyce easily. “It looks worse than it is and the headache is gone. I promise. And I’d rather be here than sitting around at home doing nothing. I’d be bored within a week.”
Madge acquiesced. “So long as you tell me if you aren’t,” insisted Madge.
“She will,” said Gillian, “because if she doesn’t I will.”

Simone, though was clearly upset, was keeping a firm grip of her emotions.
“I have to, for cousin Elise’s sake,” she said.
Gisela Mensch had returned with her along with her two oldest children Natalie and Gisel. “My Mother is caring for the children and I can be spared for a few days. Simone and I thought I could get in touch with most of the old girls and let them know what has happened,” was all she said.
“Oh Gisela, that would be wonderful,” said Madge.
Gisela’s smiled sympathetically at her old headmistress. “I remember how much you and Mademoiselle helped my family and I when Papa died. I will do all I can to help.” She hesitated, “Maria has offered to help out, if you need her to.”
“Would she?” asked Madge with hope flaring in her eyes. “I remember she was a very good student, would she like to teach? We need someone for History, Geography or science and languages and needlework.”
Gisela nodded. “She did like languages and could teach German, French or Latin.”
To Madge’s relief it was organised so easily and Maria Marani would be arriving the next day to teach German and Needlework.

Madge was able to find an older woman who could take over teaching Latin throughout the school. Miss Bubb was an MA and keen to resume teaching again. Madge didn’t quite take to her, but had put it down to being upset over Mademoiselle.
‘And it’s only for a term, until Jeanne can come back,’ she told herself firmly. ‘You’re only being silly. It’s not like you’re putting her in charge of the whole school.’ This left only History and Geography or Science to fill.

Bette di Bersetti offered to take over Senior Science and Geography on top of her usual subjects of Science and Geography for the Middles.
“But that’s a lot of work” objected Madge, “and Nell wanted you to take on coaching Elizabeth Arnett for her scholarship as well.”
“Dr Maynard could take that on,” suggested Bette easily. “He’s nearly completely recuperated from his accident just before Christmas, and I know he doesn’t want to return to the San at least until Bob and old Mrs Maynard,’ and Bette’s voice broke off for it was highly unlikely either of them would still be alive by summer.
She resumed, “Grizel was saying he’ll be working at the local hospital for a few months and then he’s likely to have to go back to the Navy, though they have been getting rumblings, the army might want him next. He might be willing to coach Elizabeth for us.”
“It’s still a lot of work,” objected Madge, “and what about Cecy? I know Carlos will be at school by then, but Cecy, will only be in Nursery School.”
“I know,” said Bette, the light fading from her eyes, “but you and Nell, have done so much for me, how could I do any less.”
Madge closed her eyes briefly. “What if you take over the Senior Geography and do all the science in the school and I’ll only agree to it on one condition she said. If it does get to be too much, you say something to me. I don’t want you making yourself ill in the process.”
And Bette agreed.

Interesting to see the differences - see Miss Bubb is there but only in a subordinate post - and it's very strange how many more people are around to help when Joey is no longer the centre of everything.

Very sad about Mademoiselle - but did think this would happen, being more than 20 years older than Hilda and with a bad heart it was unlikely she would survive.

Simone was eager to help the school as much as she can for Mademoiselle’s sake. She was stunned when Madge told her that Mademoiselle had fully owned on third of the school and had left her share of the school to Simone.
“She and I discussed this once before and she said she wanted to leave her share of the school to you, mainly because she said you loved teaching and hoped even though you were married, you would always have an interest in the school. I think she wanted to know her family would be involved in the school long after she was gone and asked if I minded. I thought it was a wonderful idea.”
Simone was touched beyond words.
“I will make Cousin Elise proud,” she said determinedly.
“You already did Simone,” said Madge gently. “I don’t think you realise how much you meant to Elise. And I’m truly happy you will be taking over as my partner from Elise.”
Simone nodded. She looked shy, “I don’t think I should take over Mademoiselle’s Study at least for this term anyway, it’s too soon.”
“Oh Simone,” said Madge, “are you sure and Simone nodded.”
“I know it will be a long time before some will accept me as your partner, but I think, most will see that as Mademoiselle’s study and –and....”
Madge nodded, she understood what Simone was trying to say. She said no more, but felt thankful for Simone’s tactful understanding.

The funeral service was held at the end of the week. Simone kept it simple, following Therese’s wishes. Madge was deeply thankful, it was being held before the term started again, so she could grieve instead of having to remain strong for everyone else. Everyone gathered at the school afterwards and reminisced about Mademoiselle.
“She loved the school,” said Simone wistfully to Madge afterwards. “She was so happy teaching here. And I know it may sound terrible and I would rather she didn’t die, but I am so glad she didn’t have to die slowly of her heart condition. It would have been so hard to watch her go slowly like that.”
Madge nodded, “I know what you mean,” she said softly. “Therese would have felt like she was a burden and she would have hated that, however much we would say she wasn’t.”
“I’m so glad Tessa got to meet her,” said Simone, “and she’ll have some memories of her too.”
All too soon the day ended and it was time to say good bye to everyone. And Madge turned her attention back to the school.

And yet I am so pleased that Simone was left Therese's share - EBD completely forgot that she had Mademoiselle as Madge's partner. One third share? So is the other third Dick's then? Did Joey get paid off when she married and left the Tyrol?

I *hope* Joey got paid off!

Thanks Fiona. Is it wrong of me to say that something so sad is brilliant?

ETA: Actually did Joey have a share to start with? Surely she couldn't have been a partner from the get go in the books as she was so young. I thought that must have been something which came later.

Author:  Alison H [ Mon Nov 29, 2010 10:44 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Margaret Bettany: Headmistress Part 3 Updated 29/11

It was set up using the proceeds from the sale of the Bettany family home, so theoretically all three of them would have had an equal share in it. In practice (sorry for being an accountant  ), what would happen in that sort of situation would be that Madge would get X% of the profit in lieu of a salary for her work as headmistress and the remaining profit would then be divided equally between her, Dick and Joey as a return on their capital investment.

What we're not told is whether or not Mlle put in any money. She's described as Madge's partner and we're told in one of the Tyrol books that the school provides a small but steady income for them both, so it sounds as if she also put in money and got a share of the profit rather than being Madge's salaried employee. In which case she definitely had a share in the school, which EBD conveniently forgot about  !

Honey Raphael stood in the art room staring miserably around it. This was going to be a horrible term. Mademoiselle Lepattre had always been the kindly woman in the background and Honey liked her, but she adored Nell Wilson. The pair had become good friends from the word go, despite the age difference and their difference in personality. Nell had become like a favourite aunt to Honey and she was missing her badly. Honey sighed and turned to leave the room; there was nothing left for her to do here, when she saw someone standing at the door.

“Kits, oh Kits when did you come?” she cried and leapt at her old governess.
“I got here a few minutes ago,” explained Miss Christopher. “Honey’s what’s wrong?” she asked noticing the red eyes and the woebegone face.
Honey poured out the whole story, how one of the Headmistresses had died over the holidays in a bus accident and how four others were injured and how awful it all was.
“Oh Honey,” said Miss Christopher sympathetically, “that is so awful. I am so sorry.”
“I wanted to go home so badly, when I heard the news,” admitted Honey. “This is the next best thing, having you here. Hasn’t mother got my letter yet?” she asked, with a quiver. Miss Christopher shook her head, “she hadn’t this morning when I left. Now why don’t you show me around your classroom,” she asked. “Did you know, out of all the girls I taught, I never expected you to become a teacher.”
Honey made a face. “Why does everyone say that?” she complained. “Heather thinks it’s the joke of the season and wants to know how on earth I can manage to keep the girls under control.”
“Oh I would think you would do that very well,” said Miss Christopher smilingly, “the girls probably love you too much not to behave.”
“I think they do rather,” admitted Honey disarmingly, “which I’m kind of relieved about. I can’t be sarcastic or tell the girls off too much; it’s not in me. Miss Wilson did offer to give me lessons in being sarcastic.” And her voice quivered again.
“I take it she was in the accident?” asked Miss Christopher gently while Honey nodded blinking back tears.

“Why don’t we go somewhere quiet and have some tea,” suggested Miss Christopher. Honey nodded and led Miss Christopher off to a little sitting room, she shared with three or four other mistresses in her wing of the house.
Miss Christopher wisely led the chatter to other things and filled Honey in on all that had happened at home in the few days since she left and what she herself had been up to since she had last seen Honey.
“I should introduce you to Madame,” said Honey with a sigh.
“Is she that terrifying?” asked Miss Christopher with a grin.
“No-o-o,” said Honey thoughtfully. “She’s a dear and awfully fun. I just hate the idea, of you having to leave so soon.”
“If you can hunt up a bed for me, I can be wrangled to stay the night if you like,” offered Miss Christopher, her heart going out to the girl, who in her mind’s eye will always be the eight year old girl she once taught.
“Let’s go see Madame and ask her,” said Honey jumping up with some of her old enthusiasm.

Honey knocked on the door of Miss Bettany’s study.
“Come in,” called out Miss Bettany.
“Honey what can I do for you?” asked Miss Bettany trying to smile.
“My old governess has come to visit me,” said Honey, “and I thought I should introduce you both. Miss Christopher, this is Miss Bettany.”
Honey, then received a shock.
“Madge Bettany, is that really you!” exclaimed Miss Christopher
“Ruth?!” Said Madge. “You taught Honey! Oh it’s so good to see you again.”
And the pair hugged warmly, before drawing away.
“I had no idea you were the Headmistress here. I thought you went out to Austria with Mademoiselle,” said Ruth, “that means,” and Ruth’s smile faded.
“Oh I am so sorry Madge. Honey told me what happened,” and she squeezed Madge’s arm in sympathy. “I never knew her well, but the little I did know of her, she was a lovely woman.”
“She was,” said Madge sadly.
“So how do you both know each other?” asked Honey bewildered.
“Madge Bettany was Head Girl at the High when I was a Junior,” explained Ruth, “and her sister Joey was one of the Juniors when I was in the Sixth.”
“Were you Head Girl too?” asked Honey interestedly
Ruth shook her head, “I was Second Prefect. How is Joey?” Asked Ruth. “And Grizel –didn’t she go with you?”
“Joey is married to a Belsornian. She escaped Belsornia and is here with her five children,” said Madge, “and Grizel married one of the doctor’s at the local San in Austria. When the Aunchless came, they escaped back her. Pretty Maid’s actually belongs to her husband’s family; they offered it to us.”
“So what are you up to these days?” asked Madge changing the subject.
“Nothing at the moment,” replied Ruth promptly. “I was teaching at a school in London, but it was bombed over Easter and the Head doesn’t particularly want to keep teaching, so everyone has scattered. I know I’ll find a job somewhere; teachers are in short supply.”
“Oh Miss Christopher you could teach here, couldn’t she Madge?” Cried Honey eagerly.
“What do you teach?” asked Madge practically, hope in her eyes.
“General subjects mainly. I tend to teach the middle school and focus on history and geography mainly,” explained Miss Christopher.
“That would be perfect for us,” said Madge in relief. “Bette di Bersetti normally teaches Geography and Science for the Middle and Junior forms, while Miss Wilson takes on the Seniors. She offered to take on all of the Science for the school and Senior Geography, so if you took over geography and history for the Middles and Juniors, that would be wonderful.”
“Would you like to teach here?” Offered Madge tentatively.
“I would love to work for you,” said Ruth simply. “I will need to collect my things. I left everything at Mothers’”
“Of course. Thank you so much Ruth, you don’t know what a godsend you are,” answered Madge feeling like some of the weight had been lift from her shoulders
“Now if only we can find someone for Senior history,” said Madge, “then everyone is covered.”

I don't the think the school is ever floated. It's a limited company so the staff can have shares in it but a plc is very differerent. Floats would have been much rarer then because there'd only have been the Main List at the Stock Exchange, unlike now where you have AIM and others. Even now, schools tend to be charities and not plcs (although staff couldn't have dividends from a charity).

As JB said, this is all woven together really well :D .

The school became a private limited company but was never a public limited company: it was too small a business to go public. Although I like the idea of it being floated on the Stock Exchange and share prices plummeting every time there was yet another accident/disaster  .

I was going to agree with you, Miss Di, until I remembered how indignant I get in my own workplace when jobs occasionally seem to have been "created" for specific people. . . Of course, were I one of these fortunate souls I wouldn't be complaining at all at all! :)

I suppose in a wartime situation, it's better for Madge to be able to offer the job to someone she knows, and who can provide personal references as to her suitability for the job.

If you don't know the characters you might want to read the La Rochelle series (EBD) and "Before the CS: Bettany's at Taverton High" (Helen Barber - GGBP) Helen uses some of the La Rochelle characters in that and it's, in my opinion, one of the best fill ins.

Fiona, I am absolutely loving this drabble, it's so EBD but so very slightly different, the difference one action (Madge not marrying had) She just seems such calming influence. I wonder how Miss Bubb will fair under Madge as a relatively minor character and also wondering what'll happen with Gay and Jacynth.

Keep writing... you have a least a few months drabble left til you get to "Coming of Age"

The plan is to post an update this weekend. I've started writing a bit more. I can't guarantee I'll be posting daily. I started a new job 3 months ago and it's been a lot harder than I thought it would be and a huge change from my last one. I almost quit at one point but decided not to after a long talk with my boss. I was going home most day nearly in tears which was so out of character and it's not like me to do that. She informed everyone goes through the same thing and it will get better. It's finally getting better now and I'm no longer working the long hours and have time to write and can actually think about the drabble and write without feeling like my brain had stopped working.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the choir and orchestra; you have no idea how much it has meant to me or how much it cheered me up when I was feeling so down about my job. I ended up in a little mushy puddle thinking how lovely everyone was for writing it! You all really made my days, so thank you so much everyone.

Post subject:  Re: Margaret Bettany: Headmistress Part 3 Updated 12/2

Thanks for all your support. Work is getting better which is great and I feel like I'm starting to know what I'm meant to be doing there.

Term started quietly enough; everyone was subdued from what had happened. Madge had arranged for the girls to be in their form rooms, when they were told the news about what had happened with Mademoiselle Lepattre and all the other mistresses. Madge was aware at how beloved Mademoiselle had been and thought it would be kinder to tell them in smaller groups rather than at an assembly. All the girls were upset, some more so than others and it was a difficult time for everyone; mistresses and pupils alike.

Madge had somewhat reluctantly accepted Joey’s offer to teach History. She didn’t have anyone else and Joey was the only person she knew who knew History well enough to teach it. She did insist on Ruth Christopher taking on Senior History in that case as she had more experience in teaching History than Joey did. Joey was surprisingly good at teaching the Middles and threw herself wholeheartedly into it. The term had started well enough; the girls were so well behaved and everyone seemed to be sensitive to the grief of others –it was as though Mademoiselle’s death had bought home how much everyone else meant to them. Madge was kept busy as girls turned to her in their grief and it seemed as though she could rarely turn without someone needing her. It wasn’t only Mademoiselle, the girls missed but also all those recovering from the accident.

Madge paused with writing her history of the school. It was hard going at times, but she loved writing it all the same.
“Oh Elise,” murmured Madge, “how I miss you still.”
‘How many years had it been? Too many,’ she thought. It didn’t seem right that Elise wasn’t going to be here for the celebrations next term. She, of all people, should be here thought Madge.
Joyce entered the room quietly, “Simone has sent over the last of the books,” she said quietly. “I had almost forgotten about these,” said Madge softly. “I remember when someone suggested the girls should write what Mademoiselle meant to them. I don’t think even I realised just how she had helped some of them.”
Joyce nodded. “She had a way of making you see the worst about yourself and inspired you to want to change.” Joyce gave a sudden grin.
“I know when I first saw her I never thought much of her; I thought she would be easy to get around. That was until she was so angry about how I behaved in those extra language lessons.”
Joyce gave a rueful smile, “she made me feel a complete worm about myself.”
Madge smiled. “You improved Joyce and I was never so thankful to have you as my secretary as I was that term. You have no idea how grateful I was the way you pitched in a helped out with whatever was needed.”
“You mean like playing cricket with Miss Bubb,” said Joyce wickedly and the pair started laughing.
“She didn’t like doing that much,” said Madge with a chuckle. “I don’t think Miss Bubb ever understood just how much we’ve always trusted the girls here.”
“For better or worse,” said Joyce smiling, “and it did help the fifths feel a little friendlier towards her as their Form Mistress. What on earth possessed you to put her in charge of the Fifths?”
“I thought she would be better with a Senior form,” explained Madge, “and Pam Slater was best suited for the Sixth as she was helping a lot of them with their applications for University. I thought Upper Fifth would cope with her as their Form Mistress; I had no idea she would treat them like they were juniors again.”

Miss Bubb didn’t understand the school’s policy to trust their pupils and the Senior girls were never supervised in their free time and the middles only had minimal supervision. Madge had always found it had worked well especially with the Seniors and as she said once to Therese, if the girls don’t start learning how to be trusted in the Fifth Form, what will they be like in the Sixth when we expect them to become Prefects. Miss Bubb not understanding the unwritten rule had insisted on supervising her form at all times, which meant she also supervised the Lower Fifth as well as the Fifths shared the same Common Room.

The Fifth Formers nearly revolted and were only kept in check by Daisy Venables who understood better than most just what the school was going through with the death of Mademoiselle and the injuries of five other mistresses. She never forgot, the day Madame had come home with the news, nor how upset and bruised Madame de Bersac, Miss Linton, Miss Heriot and Miss Linton were when they came home from the hospital.
“We can’t complain to Madame,” she said. “She has enough on her plate. I happen to know most of the Middles and Junior’s are lining up to see Madame every night of the week. Prim told me. She said most of the girls are really upset, not just about Mademoiselle but also about the other mistresses.
“Mums said Madame is carrying a heavier load this term with half the mistresses in hors de combat and we’ve only the Junior Mistresses left. She said we needed to help out a lot more this term especially cos the younger girls are upset by what’s happened.”
“But Daisy,” complained Gay, “what can we do then?”
“There’s no point in offering to help out the younger girls with coaching cricket or tennis,” said Mollie Carew gloomily, “she hates sport and sees it as a complete waste of time. She thinks we should all be studying especially as we have our school cert this term.”
“And she’s already complained to Mrs Clitheroe about me teaching Jacynth the cello,” said Gay, “but Mrs Clitheroe said Madame had given her permission and if Miss Bubb didn’t like she should see Madame about it.”
“What if you talked to Biddy about it,” suggested Beth Chester turning to Daisy. “You know her the best of all of us, and she may be able to help.”
Daisy nodded, “I’ll see what I can do was all,’ she said.

Daisy is very reasonable here and I like Madge's reasoning that Miss Bubb would be better with the older girls, that would make a lot of sense in terms of Miss Bubb as a teacher, just sadly not as a form mistress.

Daisy was as good as her word and spoke with Biddy who insisted Madge be told. Madge gave an inward sigh when she heard, what had been happening.
“I’m sorry Daisy,” she said sincerely. “I’ll talk to Miss Bubb about this.”
Daisy and Biddy both left satisfied, while Madge had an extremely difficult interview with Miss Bubb who refused to listen to reason and made it very clear she thought the Fifth Formers needed constant supervision.
“They don’t,” said Madge quietly, “and how will the ever learn to become responsible if we don’t give them opportunities to show us they can be trusted. I would far rather they learn it now in the safe confines of this school than have to learn it later when they have left, where they may not have the support of the adults they way they do here.”

Miss Bubb’s lips tightened. Unbeknownst to anyone, Miss Bubb hoped to make her position more permanent. Madge had appeared to be so young, more like an older sister in so many ways than Headmistress and with Therese no longer around, Miss Bubb hoped she would be able to take over from her.
‘I’m sure she was the main Headmistress,’ Miss Bubb had told herself. ‘Miss Bettany won’t know how to handle a school this size and then I can step in.’
She mentally shook herself and warned herself to go carefully.
“I see,” she said carefully, “I don’t know the girls as well as you do and none of the schools I have ever taught at ever allowed that kind of freedom.”
“Of course,” said Madge easily. “What if,” she started struck by a sudden thought, “we should play a game of cricket or something; something that will allow you to get to know the girls, and help them to see in a different light; especially after the misunderstanding of the past week?”
Miss Bubb was horrified, but couldn’t see a tactful way of refusing. “But I’ve never played cricket,” she said feebly.
“We won’t play a serious game,” reassured Madge, “and it’s not hard to pick it up.”
Miss Bubb gave it up as a bad job and reluctantly agreed.

Madge tactfully asked Biddy to challenge the Fifths to a friendly game, a challenge that also included the Headmistress and Form Mistresses of all the forms.
Miss Bubb was surprised at the friendly feeling it garnered between the girls and the mistresses, though she couldn’t get used to Madge not standing on her dignity more. She noticed that no matter how relaxed the girls were with the others, they maintained their respectful distance with her.
“Now,” said Madge laughingly when the Fifth had managed to beat the Sixths, “I am going to take the Sixths off to my study, while the rest of you riff raff can run away.
“Miss Bubb won’t you join us please.”
“But,” started Miss Bubb, who looked at her own form, feeling like she should be staying with them, before remembering what Madge had said about the Fifth Forms being allowed more free time.
“Alright,” she said reluctantly.
The fifth formers grinned with delight and relief that they forgot Madame had referred to them as riff raff.
"Thank goodness for Madame," said Gwensi fervently.
"And pity the poor Sixth who are now stuck with her," said Beth Chester with a grin.
"At least Madame is with them as well," said Daisy. "She'll manage Miss Bubb."
Biddy with a gentle nudge from Madge, came over, and started to talk with Miss Bubb.
Miss Bubb found the sixth were a polite and courteous group of girls and far more serious than she realised.

I didn't like Miss Bubb in EBD's world and I like her even less in this one.

I know Madge is recollecting her experiences of the school but, oh, I do wish that woman didn't have to make an appearance!! I hope that Madge's gentle words about trusting the girls sinks in and she leaves them alone in their free time.

I'm sure Miss Bubb has an excellent knowledge of her subject but how arrogant of her thinking Madge wasn't experienced enough to be the Headmistress and that she could step in to her shoes. It just shows how blinkered she is as she must have seen and heard comments from other staff members about how well the philosophy of the school works.

All I can say, Fiona, is that whilst your portrayal of Miss Bubb is wonderful I just hope you get rid of her before she does too much damage!! :)

Madge led the conversation to what their plans were when they left school.
“I’m torn between languages and history,” said Biddy mournfully. “I still don’t know which one I want study at University.”
“Why not history?” suggested Elizabeth, “you know you love that and you will need Latin for translations, isn’t that right Miss Bubb?”
“Yes you do,” said Miss Bubb. “You do have a gift for languages and your Latin is quite good,” which from Miss Bubb was high praise.
“Get your scholarship first,” said Madge gently, “and then worry about what you want to focus on. You do have a few more weeks before you need to decide. What about the rest of you? How is all your study going Elizabeth?”
Elizabeth groaned, “its going. Dr Maynard is kind to coach me, but I can’t wait for Miss Wilson to come back.”
“Coaching?” asked Miss Bubb
“Yes, Elizabeth is sitting for the Cooper Prize in the Sciences,” explained Madge. “Miss Slater heard about it and thought of Elizabeth. Miss Wilson discussed it with her and Elizabeth thought she would at least try.”
“I don’t know why,” groaned Elizabeth, “and the closer the exam is, the worse I feel about it. You see Miss Bubb; no female has ever won it. And I would like to be the first. I know it may sound silly.
“No it doesn’t,” said Miss Bubb inwardly impressed by the girls’ determination, “but how do you find time to do everything.”
“I am starting to find it hard at times,” admitted Elizabeth, “it hasn’t been so bad until this term, but it’s probably because the exam is coming closer.”
“Is anyone else going to University?” asked Miss Bubb interestedly.
“I am,” said Monica with a grin. “I’ve always wanted to become a Games Mistress and Dad has promised that as long as I worked hard I could go to Bedford.”
“And I’m hoping to go to the Royal College of Music,” added Myfanwy.
“I plan on training to be a nurse,” said Emmie Linders, “and so does Alixe and Sophie. The rest are planning on volunteering with WRENS or something.”
“Why nursing?” asked Miss Bubb involuntarily, “you could go to University and study languages.”
“I could,” answered Emmie slowly, “but I’m hoping when the War is over to return home and help my country. Nursing will come in very useful for that, I think.”
“What about a diplomat or something, and help stop Wars,” suggested Emily with a grin. “You would certainly do a better job than the idiots who couldn’t manage to stop this war.”
“I think you’ll find a lot of this War’s problems stem back to the Great War; at least that what Mr Humphries seems to think,” explained Madge quietly.
“Mr Humphries?” asked Miss Bubb surprised.
“Robin’s father works for the Foreign Office,” explained Madge. “He was in Russia for a number of years, and Robin was a pupil here until last summer. Mr Humphries is an old friend of my parents. I think history will tell us more and hindsight is a wonderful thing.”
“And there will be Wars as long as there are people who want to fight them,” added Miss Bubb drily, “but I do think it’s commendable you want to help rebuild your country.”

Madge looked at Miss Bubb thoughtfully as the conversation washed around her; she had been initially unsure whether Miss Bubb would fit in. She held the reins far more tightly than what Madge ever wanted, preferring to trust the girls, who for the most part had proven themselves to be trustworthy and she had a manner which could rub people up the wrong way, but she certainly showed herself keen for the girls to do well in their studies. Maybe, just maybe there is a way to help her fit in, thought Madge to herself, before mentally shaking off her thoughts and joined in the conversation.
“I think it’s time for bed,” said Madge at last. “Feeling fresher?” she asked Elizabeth as she was leaving.
“Yes,” admitted Elizabeth, “I was feeling a bit woolly headed earlier and couldn’t make my brain work properly.”
“It’s important to take breaks” warned Madge. “You can overwork, to the point you can think and can’t remember what you’re learning.”
“I know,” said Elizabeth with a sign. “Life just seems to be too busy at times to fit everything in,” and she left with Betty.

I'm seeing another side of Miss Bubb, one which I could warm towards as long as she allows herself to be led in the right direction by Madge. She's obviously beginning to take her more seriously rather than young and unsuitable as a headmistress.

She seems surprised at hearing the girls' plans for further education albeit supportive. She could be a great asset to the school if she goes about it the right way as she's obviously a highly educated woman with aspirations for the female sex, so unusual in the days of EBD.

It's good to see Bedford referred to as a university although as a specialist P.E. College it was a teacher training college until taken under the wings of one of the local universities in the '80's, I think. Being an ex Dartford student I don't know which one. Great rivalry between Dartford, the 1st specialist P.E. College, Bedford and Chelsea, with I.M.Marsh running closely behind.

Thanks, Fiona.

“So what do you think of our Prefects?” asked Madge after the girls had left.
“I never realised they were so ambitious,” admitted Miss Bubb, “especially Elizabeth Arnett; to want to be the winner of the Cooper Prize.” She broke off. “It’s a lot of work.”
“It is,” agreed Madge, “and it’s been harder for her this term without Miss Wilson’s help.”
“You don’t think she’s doing too much, with being involved in games and her Prefect duties?” Miss Bubb asked curiously.
“I would think she would need to cut back and focus on her studies more, at least for this exam term. I would think all the girls with important exams would need to do that.”

Madge looked at Miss Bubb thoughtfully. “I’ve always found good steady work, is much better than cramming or overworking at the last minute. All the girls have worked steadily for the last three years, to reach this point. And all the Sixth Form, who have exams, are studying at least three hours a day during the week and two hours on Saturday. I think that’s plenty myself. And they do need the break games can give them.”
“But some of that time, they’re supervising the younger girls and it means they lose some of that time when the younger girls play up or need help,” said Miss Bubb urgently. “How can they focus on their work then?”
“What do you suggest?” asked Madge with a curious smile.
“I’m not sure,” admitted Miss Bubb. “Perhaps the mistresses should supervise the Prep.”
“They already supervise the Juniors,” said Madge quietly, “and it would be a struggle to include the Middles as well.”
“What about the Lower Sixth?” started Miss Bubb.
“Most of them have their Higher School Certificate at the end of summer,” said Madge quietly, “and are in the same boat as the Upper Sixth.”
“And the Fifth, are too young, to supervise the Middles,” said Miss Bubb definitively.
“And yet these same girls will be our Prefects, in another year or two,” said Madge hiding a smile. “I can see potential in a number of the girls. Miss Bubb, would you consider raising this at a staff meeting.”
“Yes,” said Miss Bubb looking gratified.

“Does anyone know what this staff meeting is for?” asked Gillian as she threw herself into an armchair wearily.
“I didn’t think we had anything to discuss this early in the term. Joyce, you see Madge the most, has she said anything to you about it?”
Joyce shook her head, “only that Miss Bubb has something she’d like to discuss with all of us. Simone, I think knows. She did spend the better part of Kaffee und Kuchen with Madge. Simone?”
Simone shook her head, “I cannot say she said firmly. Madame would like Miss Bubb to discuss this, but I do think it’s something worth changing.”
Gillian nodded, “oh well we’ll find out soon enough,” and changed the subject to other things.
And nobody noticed the look of barely concealed jealousy that Joey threw Simone.

Madge swept into the room with Miss Bubb. “Is everyone here?” She inquired.
Joyce nodded, “all except for Bette. She’ll be here in a minute or two; she’s putting Cecy to bed first.”
Bette arrived full of apologies, which Madge brushed away. “Bette, you’ve got a heavier load than most. How is little Cecy?”
“Good,” said Bette, her face breaking into a smile, “but missing Maeve badly. How is Mollie finding living at the Quadrant?”
“Enjoying it, and she loves having Dick back,” said Madge. “I think Maeve is missing school, but Mollie didn’t want Maeve or Maurice boarding, while they’re only six.”

“Now,” said Madge briskly, changing the subject, “Miss Bubb raised an interesting point, the other day with me, regarding the Upper Sixth. I have discussed this with Simone, and she agrees, it’s worth raising, Miss Bubb?”
“I felt the girls needed to be able to devote more time to their studies,” said Miss Bubb. “It’s an important term for many of the Sixth, as they are sitting for their Higher Certificates or for scholarship exams.”
“What are you proposing?” asked Miss Slater curiously.
“I think they may need to give up certain pursuits, for their studies,” explained Miss Bubb. “It’s only for a term.”
“None of them have any music exams,” said Maidie Clitheroe who was well aware of how little Miss Bubb thought of her subject, “except for Myfanwy, who plans to go onto the Royal College of Music. They tend to sit all their major music exams in the Fifth Form for this reason.”

“It was actually in relation to Prep,” explained Madge quickly in an attempt to keep the peace.
“Miss Bubb thought it was unfair to ask the Sixth to supervise the Middles’ Prep while they need all their time for their own studies; and you know what Middles are like.”
“We do,” said Gillian with a heartfelt sigh. “I had this current group of Prefects to deal with when they Middles, and they weren’t easy.”
“How did you cope?” questioned Madge.
“I’d always worked hard,” said Gillian slowly, “and I do have a good memory which helps. I used to help Joyce with her work before coming to the Chalet School; so I was used to it.”
“What about you, Simone - and Juliet?” asked Madge. “You both had exams to study for, and you both went onto University. How did you cope with the pressure of it all?”

Juliet and Simone looked at each other.
“It was hard,” said Juliet slowly, “but then I did have the support of all the other Prefects, and they all understood how I felt, and tried to help me as much as they were able.”
“You also promoted more girls to Prefectship in my last term, so it did mean we didn’t have to supervise Prep as much,” said Simone trying to think back to her final year.
“And we were at St Clare’s, and you had given some of the Fifth Form some responsibilities, so that did relieve the pressure a little.
“It also meant the Lower Sixth could gain some experience before they were given full responsibility. I know I found that helped me, when I was first made a Prefect.”
“Why didn’t we continue doing that?” queried Bette.
“I think when the school had that term’s break, we didn’t restart a lot of things; I don’t know why,” said Madge. “I think we were larger and always had plenty of Prefects, so there wasn’t the need to promote people so quickly.”

“Perhaps we should start it again,” said Simone thoughtfully. “It would give Lower Sixth a chance to learn how to be Prefects, with the more experienced Prefects still around. And it will mean there are more Prefects to share the load of supervising Prep and doing break duty.”
“I found it helpful, when I took over from Gillian as Head Girl, because Gillian had helped me learn the role before having to take it on officially,” said Hilary with a grin at her friend.
“So did I,” added Bette smiling at Juliet
“It seems we’re all in agreement with you Simone,” said Madge warmly, “Now who do we promote?”
“I’m assuming they’ll be Subs?” Queried Pam Slater
“I think so,” said Simone, “don’t you Madge.”

Madge nodded, quietly satisfied, with the lead, Simone appeared to be taking. She had wondered, more than once, how Simone would cope with the new role thrust upon her by Therese’s death. So far, much of help had been quietly and unobtrusively behind the scenes; and Madge wanted to ensure everyone was aware Madge fully accepted and supported Simone as her partner. By doing that, she hoped everyone else would accept, and fully support her too.

The mistresses discussed who they thought should be promoted and decided on about eight girls. The eight girls in question are thrilled and excited about their unexpected promotion. And more than one Prefect breathed a sigh of relief after Madge explained exactly what the reason for the new prefects are for; for the older Prefects teach them about being prefects, and for the newer Prefects to help take on some of the load, with taking breaks and supervising prep, so the girls with exams don’t have that added pressure.

I really like the way all the staff played their part in that discussion, and particularly the way Madge elicited the views of those who were formerly prefects themselves. I also like this 'lower key' Miss Bubb, who sought to lighten the prefects' load to allow them more time for study without going about it in the heavy-handed way EBD described!

I'm impressed! And am glad so many are enjoying it. Work has been feral, so much so even my boss was a bit worried with how much overtime I'm doing at the moment. Do have some handwritten and hopefully will get it onto the computer this weekend. I'll be away so won't be updating until at least next week. May I also add I never thought this drabble would end up as long as it has. Just as a reminder, Madge and Joyce are reminiscing at the moment about the past.

“I think I better get back to writing again,” said Madge with a sigh.
“And I better get back to work,” said Joyce with a grin. “I’m looking forward to reading this history.”
“Even though you’ve been a part of most of it?” asked Madge interestedly.
“Yes,” agreed Joyce wholeheartedly. “I never realised how much of my life I’ve spent at this school. And I have the joy of knowing I get to read it all before anyone else does.”
And Joyce gave Madge a checky grin.
“Don’t worry Madge, I will correct all your mistakes, and make sure everyone knows how much you couldn’t have done anything without your wonderful secretary, Joyce Linton.” Madge choked. “I think I should get someone else to type it up,” she said with a smile.
Her smile faded.
“You were wonderful though. I don’t think I would have had any idea just how problematic Joey was becoming if it weren’t for you.”
“I’m only sorry I had to,” said Joyce becoming serious.

Madge had continued to be busy. She spent a lot of time with Miss Bubb, ensuring she did not closely supervise the Fifths, as she had been doing. She leapt at the suggestion of Pam Slater’s that she, and Miss Bubb, spend time, with each girl in the Upper Fifth, to discuss their subjects for the following school year with them, and what their future plans were. It was something Nell Wilson normally did with Pam, but Miss Bubb seemed well suited to take on the role while Nell was away.
‘It was an inspired idea of Pam’s,’ thought Madge, and it seemed to bring out the best in Miss Bubb.
‘Miss Bubb,’ thought Madge shaking her head, ‘if only she would let us call her Mabel. I hate this formality in private.’

Madge was involved in much of the discussions with Pam and Miss Bubb, and when she wasn’t, she seemed to be pulled in all directions by so many of the pupils. Little Marie le Coudelec came, and saw her nearly in tears, because it had been so long since she last heard from her parents in France. Madge spent a long time trying to comfort her, and promised she would asked Robin’s Father to see what he could find out. Marya made more than one appearance saying she felt rageous or she just wanted to see Auntie Madge, and when was she coming to visit for tea. Madge enjoyed the visits from Marya, and promised she would visit Marya for afternoon tea on Saturday, so long as her mother agreed. Marya danced off, eager to ask her mother if Auntie Madge could come to afternoon tea, and soon returned with permission.

Madge spent a long time with Joy Bird, who was missing Mademoiselle rather badly.
“She was the one, who really made me feel like I could be different,” sobbed Joy. “I don’t know what to do now.”
Madge who was aware Mademoiselle spent a lot of one on one time with Joy, helping her with her studies, or even simply giving her a safe haven to come, when she was feeling out of sorts, tried to fill that role. All in all it meant Madge was usually kept so busy it was late before she made it to the staff room to check on how the staffs was going, and she missed the undercurrents.
