Lying in bed with his beautiful young wife sprawled next to him Rix Bettany should have been happy and contented. But instead he had had a sleepless night. The sun was just starting to come up and there was a curious half-light in the room. Rix closed his eyes painfully, before rolling over. He couldn't face her any longer.

He hadn't believed it when she had accepted his proposal, but she had. He had vowed to make her life a perfect one. He would never give her cause to doubt him. He would give her all the love she had never had at home. And he had loved her, and held her and listened to her.

They had argued of course, some things just never change. But the aftermath of a fight was always so sweet. He had never known how tender he could be, he had never realised it was possible to love one person so much, and so unconditionally.

But he couldn't expect her to love him back now, not after today. But how could he tell her? It would be the end of everything. But then how could he not? How could he sit there knowing that he could never give her her happily ever after. He had to tell her. But he couldn't, he just couldn't.

She might want to stay though, said a small voice in his head. But she wouldn't. Even if she did love him that much, how could he let her? She deserved happiness. A happiness he couldn't give her.

Behind him he heard movement as Ted wriggled restlessly in her sleep. He just wanted to wrap his arms around her and never let her go.

“Rix” said a sleepy voice.

He rolled over, not quite able to meet her eyes.

“Yes darling?”

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing. Nothing at all. I just can't sleep thats all.”

Ted pushed her hair out of her face, and he knew she was studying him, trying to find out what he was keeping from her.

“Go back to sleep Ted” he said softly.

“Come here then” and she wrapped her arms around him, holding him close to her.

“I need to go” he said, pulling himself away, “I'm meant to be in work early this morning.”

“It's barely five” said Ted, her voice almost inaudible.

“I need to go” he repeated, not letting himself look at the woman whom he loved more than any other person on this Earth.

He heard Ted turn over and he knew that she would probably cry once he had left and couldn't see her. What was he doing?

* * *

“Look at this” she screeched, “Look at it” she threw the sheet of paper in his face.

“Why? Just tell me why? Just tell me f***ing why? Three years we have waited. Three years! And where the hell has that got us? One month Rix, one month was all it took them. Tell me Rix, just tell me, what the f*** is wrong with me?”

She looked into his anguished eyes and saw her pain reflected in his. She had crossed the invisible line they had drawn on talking about this. What if they never... what if they couldn't?

“Oh Rix” she said, the tears springing to her eyes. “I'm sorry. We both want this. I shouldn't be like this should I? Why can't I just be happy for them? They are our best friends.”

He crossed the room and wrapped her in his arms. Surrounded by him, she felt the tension leaving her.

Hiccuping slightly she said, “I'm awful amn't I? Look at what I have. I have you, and I'm still complaining. We don't need kids Rix, we have each other. I can never imagine being happier than this.”

She clung to him, and he held her tight.

The start of this is a bit depressing, but after the first few posts it isn't.

I'm glad you've written about them, Brie, as I really enjoyed your story when they got together!

I hope things work out for them, though.

I love Rix! There should be more stories about Rix!

Thanks Brie!

PS: Does one of your previous stories feature Rix and Ted getting together? I feel sure I have read something like it, but have been somewhat absent from the CBB of late and haven't been able to keep up with all the stories I'd like to...

Thanks for all the lovelyful comments! I'm so sorry this bit is so depressing, and I know you are all going to hate me. All I can say is... the bunnies made me do it!

Three years later:

Ted was clutching the telegram when he came in. Her face was ashen.

He had spoken to David just that morning, the baby was due any day now. They now had two children to the Bettany's zero.

“It's okay, Ted. We will have our chance.” he said gently. They were just starting to talk about adoption.

She shook her head slowly. Her eyes seemed unfocused as she handed the telegram over to Rix, her hands shaking.

He read the telegram, then he read it again. Sinking into a chair he read it a third time. It still said the same thing.

“NO” he yelled staring at the ceiling, ”NO. WHO THE F*** DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?” Picking up the little coffee table and hurled it against the wall.

As the wood splintered, and the glass smashed Ted seemed to come alive.

She walked across the room, engulfing her husband.

“It's not fair” he said shakily eventually, his face buried in her damp shoulder. He looked up at her, into her eyes. He stood up suddenly and scooped her into his arms. “Don't ever leave me” he whispered, holding her so tightly it almost hurt.

“Don't leave me either” she mumbled, her tears now flowing freely.

“I won't ever.” he promised.

Earlier that day, in Austria

“Oh curse this weather.” muttered David Russell, as he strapped his first born daughter into the back of their car.

“Careful David” warned Ruey, groaning slightly as she manoeuvred herself into the passenger seat. “Thea copies everything you say.”

“Calm down” replied David easily, eventually entering the car himself, although soaking wet.

“Calm down Mummy” repeated three year old Thea from the back of the car.

“Now drive slowly David” warned Ruey, massaging her swollen stomach, “It's practically a hurricane out there.

“I can see the weather Ruey” replied David placidly, though Ruey could see he was worried too.

“Don't you moan at me” was Ruey's reply, “I'm the one who is supposed to be moany, not you!”

“Are you implying that you have been in a thoroughly good temper in comparision to me?” asked David with a grin on his face.

“Of course” replied Ruey, “Are you denying it?”

“I wouldn't dream of it.” he said, still with that annoying grin on his face.

“DAVID WATCH OUT!” screeched Ruey, and David swerved just in time to miss a falling tree.

After that the journey continued in silence, Ruey with her arms across her stomach protectively, kept glancing back at her Daughter worriedly. But little Thea Evelyn had fallen asleep.

David had his nose practically up against the windscreen in an effort to see out. It was an October storm. Howling wind, sheets and sheets of heavy rain, and the road was only occasionally lit up by a distant bolt of lightening.

David had slowed down to a crawl, the muddy roads were getting increasingly slippy. Beside him Ruey was starting to moan softly, as she felt herself going into labour.

David ignored her, he had no choice. Gritting his teeth he tried to block out the sound of his wife's pain. He was becoming more and more aware that he was in this car with his wife, daughter, and his soon to be child. He needed to stop the car.

Ruey moaned slightly louder, but the noise was blocked out by the sound of the thunder starting. Thea woke up with a start.

David took his eyes of the road for one moment as his daughter started crying shrilly. But it was long enough.

The swerved into an extra slippery patch and the car, now out of David's control swung straight towards a tree. In a last attempt to save his family David managed to turn the car slightly so that it was his side of the car that swung full force into the oak.

“Thea” whispered Ruey.

“Thea” she shouted as loud as she could.

“Mummy” was the replying whimper.

“Oh thank God” whispered Ruey.

“Mummy i'm scared” said Thea quietly.

Me too, thought Ruey, “It's okay Thea baby” she said aloud, “Mummy will look after you.”

“What about Daddy?” asked Thea.

Ruey didn't reply. “It's all going to be alright darling.”

Faintly she felt a kicking in her abdomen. The baby was still alive.

She looked outside at the lashing rain, and inside around her the scarlet splatter everywhere.

She tried to move, it took her three attempts to remove her seatbelt, one of her arms was broken. She eventually fell out of the car. She knew the blood was all her own, not her husbands.

It was excrutiating, in slippy mud, with the wind and rain slashing her.

Inside she knew her daughter was watching, and could hear her screams.

She needed to stay conscious until she knew both her children were safe, but she could feel her hold on this world slipping.

“Rosli Aline” whispered Ruey. “Hello baby” she said, tearfully.

Somehow she managed to open the car again. Trembling she grabbed the guide knife inside, wiped it on the inside of her jacket, and cut the umbilical cord. She took of her jacket almost passing out from the pain. Reaching over somehow, she placed little Rosli in Thea's arms.

“Mummy” whispered Thea scared.

“Mummy loves you” said Ruey, “and... and so does Daddy. We will always love you and your sister.” She wrapped the jacket tightly around the two girls.

“Hold on to Rosli, Thea, and look after her okay?” her voice was getting weaker.

“Mummy's just going to sleep alright Thea.” said Ruey slumping against her cold husband. She had done everything she could.

“Mummy” cried Thea.

“MUMMY”

The baby started crying too.

“Daddy, Mummy?” said Thea again uncertainly.

There was no reply.

“We can't Rix”

Rix looked at her genuinely surprised.

“Why?”

“WHY?” Ted's voice became shrill, “Two babies? How can we possibly. Rix, we can't how can we?”

“How?” he asked, looking at her almost as if he didn't recognise her, “You have always wanted children. And now, when it's your best friends children you even have to think about it?”

“Don't look at me like that Rix” she said coldly, “Don't even pretend you aren't having doubts.”

“Of course I'm having doubts” he said, his piercing blue eyes staring straight into hers, “But think about them Ted. Think about them.”

“I can't stop Rix” she said, lowering her gaze.

He looked at her closely, at the black circles under her eyes, the paler than normal pallor of her skin, the way she had her arms were crossed against her chest protectively.

“I'm having nightmares. I just keep imagining the crash. I mean when that doctor told us how he thought it must have happened. It just keeps running through my head.”

“Doesn't that make you want to look after these two girls more though?” asked Rix as gently as he could.

She turned away, then so quietly that he could hardly hear, “What if I fail them Rix?”

He took her by the shoulders, and swung her around. She saw the same fear reflected in his face. She knew he had always felt inferior to his cousin.

“We will be failing them worse if we don't even try.” he said.

Slowly she nodded her head.

“Okay.”

“This wasn't what I imagined us having children would be like.”

“I know. But we are still getting them.”

To his surprise Ted started crying.

“Love?”

“Oh Rix, don't say that. I hate myself. A tiny part of me has been glad ever since we heard about the girls. Glad, Rix, Glad. What kind of person am I? What kind of hideous friend?”

Sorry, it's been so long, and sorry I wrote it. I put it off for ages though, I didn't want them to die.

During the next few weeks Ted realised the truth of the phrase 'Life goes on'.

Rix still woke her up early in the morning when he got out of bed to go to work. But now she was also being woken up by two small children.

Little Rosli slept in a cradle in the corner of their room, whilst Thea, suffering from nightmares, would curl up and sleep between them.

As the days went by Thea cried less, and stopped asking for her Mummy and Daddy all the time. The other day she had made them all laugh when she had gotten up and sung incy wincy spider to an unsuspecting creepy crawlie on their wall.

Rosli was a beautiful baby, she had huge lungs, but she was nonetheless charming, and it was not long before Ted was besotted with her. Each day Rosli would gurlgle and blink at Ted with the most vivid blue eyes. Every day Ted watched for them changing colour, but they seemed determined to remain such a bright shade of blue.

Tea- time was exhausting. Rosli was fed by bottle, but could be most un-charming when she was finished. More than once Rix had come home to find his wife covered in milk sick, with Rosli beaming from Ted's arms.

Today whilst Rosli was napping, Ted was making a provisional shopping list. Nappies being high on her list. Sitting at her side was Thea, who had pulled down Ted's hair, and was now re-plaiting it, also known as making big knots.

Ted loved the mischievous, but heart-broken, toddler. But sometimes it could be hard to look at her, she had freckles, and that same red- brown hair straggling across her shoulders. Sometimes when she looked at Thea she saw Ruey.

Just a short update for now.
