This is my first attempt at a drabble, I hope you like it!

He had asked to the summer dance held for all the doctors and nurses at the hospital. As she slow danced his arms twined round her waste, his blue eyes tender and soft, and his floppy brown hair covering half of his face she knew she was in love.
They’d agreed to take things slowly, romantic walks, picnics in the meadows. That was where it happened. They were picnicking in one of their favourite places; it was in a grassy meadow, in a cave made of tree branches. They’d eaten their food and were lying idly on their backs; her head on his chest their fingers interlaced.
Placing his free hand under her chin he tilted it till he was looking into her sparkly blue eyes and slowly kissed her, she felt her soul crumble. All she wanted was to be his forever. He kissed her softly cherishing everything about her. He moved his kisses along her jaw line and down her neck. Kissing her breasts, so soft beneath him, he carried on kissing every part of her until he reached her stomach when he rolled on top of her.
As they lay on their backs catching their breath 20 minutes later Margot realised for the first time in many years she felt happy, she felt as if she belonged and most of all: She loved him.

Margot lay on the bed, sweat pouring down her face. Her red gold hair plastered all over her face but happy.
“Congratulations” the nurse said, “have you decided what you’re going to call them?”
“Not yet!” Margot panted, “I’ll have to speak to the father first, hey where are you taking them?”
“They’ve got to go to the nursery to be checked out and cleaned up. If I’m honest with you Mrs Maynard, it’s very unusual to have that number of babies born at once and they will have to stay in intensive care for several weeks before they’re allowed home.”
“Oh, ok” Margot replied slightly shocked, “by the way, its Miss Maynard. I’m not married-yet”
The nurse’s face drained of colour, and for a moment Margot thought she was going to faint but she quickly regained control of herself and her lips set in a thin straight line. Without saying a word the nurse hurried off wheeling the babies with her.
Margot sighed, she was going to have to get used to that. Everyone was so prejudice what was wrong with being a single mother. Closing her eyes she wondered momentarily how her own mother would take it. Joey was so unpredictable she could either take it in her stride or throw a massive fit over it.
Either way she still had to face Len and that was even worse. Margot loved her oldest sister deeply but she couldn’t stand Len’s bossy nature, it was like having a second mother.
“She’s only half an hour older than Con and an hour older than me, but she still thinks she can boss everyone around!” Margot thought crossly. “This was going to be a perfect excuse for her, ever since Reg died last year she’d got ten times worse, fussing over anyone and everyone. I don’t know how her children: Josephine Helena (Josie) James John and Rosamund Mary (Rose) can stand being around her.”
Margot’s thoughts soon began to slip and presently she was fast asleep.

And how many babies did Margot have? Surely she hasn't beaten Mamma and had quads? :shock:

Here's the next bit...

Joey and Jack sat at the table in the speisesaal sipping their coffee and talking quietly as Joey was want to say it was very quiet now since all the family were either at school or out in the big wide world. Taking the key, Joey unlocked the mailbag Jack had brought in with him and set about dishing them out.
“Dr Maynard, Dr Maynard, Mrs J Maynard-from Frieda, Dr Maynard, Mrs J Maynard-fan mail, Mr J Maynard-fan mail, Dr Maynard, Dr Jack Maynard, Dr Maynard, and Mrs J Maynard-from Margot I think. I wonder why she’s writing I heard from her the other day.”
“Open it.” Jack suggested already immersed in his letters.
The next moment he was jolted from his seat by his wife’s scream.
“Joey! What’s the matter?”
“Stop screeching and tell me girl, I’ve got coffee everywhere now!”
“Jack.. Jack”
“WHAT?” Jack said rubbing at his shirt
“Stop rubbing, you’re meant to dab! You’re a Grandfather again!” and with that Joey sat back to watch his reaction.
“What!” Jack screeched “Who...what...when...how?”
“Margot, babies, last week and I think you know how!” Joey smirked
“I... but... how... I mean you said babies, does that mean twins or triplets? And she’s not married!”
“I know she’s not married so I’m guessing she’ll put them up for adoption or give them to us. Well prepare yourself my lad it was dectuplets!”
Jack sat down heavily on his chair, “Dectuplets, there’s only 2 other records of dectuplets in the whole world.”
“Well Margot will make it a third-if they all survive” she added as an afterthought.
“Does she say who the father is?” Jack asked his face still ashen
“No, I don’t think so” Joey replied scanning the letter still clutched in her left hand
“What are they called?” Jack asked
“Here read the letter yourself” Joey said passing him the letter “and I’ll get you a fresh cup of coffee”

I like the assumption Margot will give the babies up for adoption or give them to Joey and Jack.

Thank you all for your comments and to those who voted on the poll. The father will be announced in due course! :D

Having read the letter Jack sat back with a sigh. He couldn’t say he agreed with Margot’s way of doing things but as long as she was happy that was all that matters- or so he thought

“I see you’ve finished the letter!” Joey said appearing behind him with a fresh cup of coffee, “So when shall we go and collect them?”
Taking the cup Jack replied: “They’re not parcels Joey, maybe Margot wants to keep them.”

“I know they’re not.”Joey said in exaggerated tones “But really who is going to let a 22 year old single mother look after dectuplets. I mean really Jack she was the girl who has a ‘devil’ and still continues to stupid things. Do you remember her throwing the bookend at Betty Landon when she was16 just because Betty tried to save her from getting into trouble. If it were Len –though Len would never have been stupid enough to get in this position- maybe I’d have allowed it, but Margot absolutely not!”

Jack sighed exasperatedly “Joey darling, I know you only want what’s best for Margot but really she’s older than you were when the Triplets arrived and she is old enough to make her own decisions-you can’t force her to give them up.”

“I know I can’t but can’t she just see how they’re ruining her life, besides when I had the Triplets I was married and didn’t continuously do stupid things!”

“What is the difference between being a single mother and still having the father around to help and being left to look after the children when the father is at war?” Jack asked desperately “Besides much as I love every one of our children we cannot afford 10 more, so what are you going to do with them?”

“OK, let me think for a minute” Joey acknowledged.
10 minutes later she had thought it all out.

“I know what we can do. We could keep 4-they can be the quads I’ve always wanted- we can give 2 to Grizel, 1 to Hilary, 1 to Biddy, 2 to Marie and 2 to Frieda. That’s all 10. What do you think?” Joey paused for breath and looked at her Husband who was sitting next to her, his mouth wide open, staring at her as if she were insane.

Snapping his mouth shut he declared with a sense of authority: “Joey this is insane. You are going to force your friends to take the dectuplets-split them up and without even talking to Margot! No stop you are going to listen to me” as Joey opened her mouth and sulkily shut it again “You are going to ring Margot or you can go and see her and see what she wants to do. “

And with that Jack stood up and walked out of the room leaving Joey gaping after him.

Joey's maths hasn't improved since she was at school - this adds up to 12 not 10!!
