Post subject:  Len's choice

This was my bedtime drabble for the Gather.

Len Maynard was quieter than usual as she travelled back to the Gornetz Platz at the end of her first year at university. Her sisters finally gave up trying to bring her into their conversation and left her alone. Len had a good reason for her quietness; her year away from home had opened her eyes, not just to life away from home but to relationships with other people, especially young men. She had come to realise that a special feeling for a man didn’t necessarily mean marriage, but could also just be friendship, and that that was the way she felt about Reg Entwhistle. Now she had to find the opportunity to tell him that she wasn’t going to marry him after all. And what her family would say when they knew she dreaded to think.
She joined in the rejoicings as the family came together, and no one noticed anything the matter, at least for that day, and she went to bed satisfied about that
The following day happened to be free for Reg, and naturally he called round to see Len and suggested they went for a walk. Len agreed and picked up her shady hat, left a note on the hall table, and left the house. They walked in silence for a while, and then Reg asked about her last term at Oxford.
“As good as the other two,” she replied. “One thing it did do was confirm me in the way my thoughts have been going. Before we went to Oxford we had no idea how different our lives were up here. How cut off and parochial the community is, revolving round the school and the San. And I found it very hard to even talk to the boys on my course, as I’d no experience of that sort of thing apart from my brothers and cousins.”
“But you knew me,” said Reg trying not to think about where this could be leading.
“That doesn’t count,” said Len. “We’ve known you since we were children remember. It was being able to talk with everyone equally, and I found it extremely hard. Con and Margot feel the same way you know - that although academically we were well prepared for university, the opposite was true for the social side of the life. You know yourself that that is a very important part of the experience, and we were coming to that from way behind everybody else. We all encountered a degree of incredulity at how cut off we were from the ‘real world’. It’s taken me all year to feel comfortable around the boys, to be able to make friends with them, and feel equal too.”
“You haven’t found someone else, have you?” asked Reg anxiously.
“No Reg, I haven’t. But I have made close enough friendships to understand the difference between loving someone as a close friend, and wanting to spend the rest of my life with him. I’m so sorry Reg, but my feelings for you come into the first category, and I don’t think that makes a good basis for a marriage, do you?”
Reg went white, for this was his worst nightmare come true, but he knew that she was right, even through his pain.
“So you are asking to dissolve our engagement then?”
“Yes Reg. This has been so hard for me, but it had to be done as soon as possible. It wouldn’t be fair to you otherwise.”
“I agree with you then. But remember Len, that I’ll always be here for you should you need anything.”
Reg bent and kissed her gently on her cheek before turning and walking away, blinking back his tears.

Poor Reg, but what a nice way to end it. He was quietly accepting.
Thanks Pat.

Reg was a true SLOC, that he's able to let go, despite of or because he does truly love her and wants her to be happy.
