It was Jack Maynard's birthday weekend. He had all his children around him, his wife and he had the entire four days off from the San. His esteemed colleagues had practically had to push him out or throw might be a better word. Jack never took leave. But, Drs Sheppard, graves, Entwhistle and Courvoisier were most insistent.

"Go home Jack and enjoy your birthday!"

Thus it was that Jack Maynard turned up on the doorstep of his own home and was told to do exactly as his wife said and relax!

Mrs Gray at the San had to be content with the other doctors. Thankfully she was beginning to stop asking for "My Dr Maynard". Unfortunately she was taking a liking to Reg and he was deeply perturbed when she satrted calling him "My Dr Entwhistle" or "My young man".

On his birthday morning, at half past three in the morning, Jack was confronted in his bed by four year old Geoff and Phil. They had made Papa a card and brought Bruno in for company. Unfortunately, Jack didn't appreciate several kilos of St Bernard leaping on him, or his children singing happy birthday at half past three in the morning.

Before he could growl, "Go away!" the faithful Anna came in to lead the babies back to bed and Jack shooed Bruno away.

The peace was not to last. Cecily decided to present her birthday compliments to her father at four o'clock and refused to leave. She spent the remainder of the night sleeping quite happily next to Mamma and Papa. Although it was rather a tight squeeze and Joey ambled off to sleep in Cecily's bed.

Jack groaned when it was time to get up and he heard Felix and Felicity whispering loudly about Papa's birthday surprise. He could hear every word.

He left the sleeping Cecily where she was and went to wash. Now all he needed to hear were the triplets and the boys. Slightly worried now, he listened out for them. But the house was quiet. After washing and dressing, he crept from the room. What surprise were they planning?

Poor Jack. I bet the best birthday present he could have had would have been a lovely long lie and breakfast in bed!

"Yeeowch!" BANG! CRASH! WALLOP! THUD! THUMP!

"Ooh! Owww! Aaargh!"

A pause, then tears.

"Mamma! Mamma-aaa!"

"Oh Felix! Now you've spoilt Papa's surprise!"

No sympathy from Felicity. None whatsoever. Felix roared like the Bull of Basan. He had fallen from the bannisters where he was curled like a snake awaiting his father.

Jack groaned. Felix was apparently getting no sympathy from any of his siblings. They all seemed to be reprimanding him for some silly mistake. Still, he couldn't leave the silly boy in pain. Rushing from his bedroom he tore off to the landing to be confronted by a wailing Felix in Joey's arms and ten sheepish looking Maynards.

"Oh you naughty little Maynards and Maynardettes!" Jack began with mock severity. "This is a fine start to your Papa's birthday!"

Felix tried to whimper his apologies as he let his father examine him. He had broken his collar bone and was whisked off to the San to be treated. Joey took him as Jack was barred from work for the long weekend. Even his study at home had been locked and the keys hidden by Joey.

"So my imps! What was this surprise you were planning for me?"

Len led her father to the large Speisesaal where decorations were only half way up including banners, pictures of Jack from his boyhood to present day and an elegant cake situated next to a beautiful arrangement of presents. (Con had a hand in that arrangement). At that moment, Bruno made a dart for the cake and was only restrained in time by Steve and Chas. Jack barked at Bruno, who slunk to a corner.

"We were all going to sing you Happy Birthday, Papa!" said Con a little disconsolately. "It is so rare that you take a day off and that we are all together!"

Liz said it all. But is it me or is it rather easy to break one's collarbone in CS land?

Strikes me that it's rather easy to do so anywhere!

Phil, this looks like fun - thanks.

Various trests were organised for the great doctor's birthday including a meal at his favourite restaurant in Interlaken.

Down the windy streets the Maynard clan traversed. Being recognised as the great Dr Maynard of the Sanatorium, many folk stopped to doff their hats to him and chat. Poor Jack wondered if he would ever get to his birthday meal. That and the fact he was trying to keep his eyes on his children!

"Thank you Herr Schneider and I do hope, FELICITY! PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR MOTHER! Sorry Herr Schneider! I do hope Liserl will be in fine condition soon."

Herr Schneider doffed his hat as Jack set off to round up his infants. He found them. Geoffrey was dancing around a fountain with Steve and Mike chasing him one way to stop him and Charles the other way. Len had hold of a tempestuous Cecily and Joey was carrying little Phil. Suddenly Mike let out a yelp of horror!

Jack swung round to see what on Earth his son was doing.

"Aaargh! It's a shoe shop! Quick Con's about to go in there! Stop her! Stop her at all costs!"

Con looked furious! She had been dreaming about those beautiful shoes in the shop window! Those sweet little buckles and the cut of the shoe! Surely they were just the right height, and the colour! She was about to utter a furious retort about stupid babyish little boys when her father burst out laughing.

Con's cross face and Mike's look of horror caused the whole family to burst out laughing. Later, as they passed a model toy shop, there was a fantastic ship in the shop window. Margot got Con's revenge for her by covering Mike's eyes and purposefully leading him away! It was his favourite shop and she knew it! Mike boiled with wrath for a minute, listening to Margot snigger.

A surprise awaited the Maynards at the restaurant. Reg had brought Felix to the meal with his arm in a sling. Jack was delighted and the family sat down to a huge meal of delicious meats, vegetables and cakes, laden with plenty of coffee, lemonade and beer for Jack.

Now, this sounds like a perfect day. But as Joey said later on, "It's strange how funny things always happen to this family."

Felix had ordered a steak and Mike in an attempt to be helpful was cutting it up. With the wrong sort of knife. The offending steak went flying into Jack's face. The horrified look on his children's faces and Mike turning ashen white with terror only made Jack roar with laughter.

Then Stephen had to be excused and go to the toilet. He promptly banged his head on the low ceiling, which caused a minor stir. The Head waiter was aghast! That this mishap should happen to the great doctor's sn and in his restaurant!

Cecily objected to the hard boiled egg in her salad and looked like having a fit of pique, until a warning look from Jack told her to behave. Then Len spotted the spider. The Head Girl of the Chalet School, a tower of maturity, reason and common sense and the eldest of the Maynard children decided to squeal and jump up on her chair as a very large common spider clambered up her skirt.

Jack could see the restaurant rapidly emptying. To crown it all, Geoffrey had eaten his food too quickly and after escaping to the restaurant garden to run around was promptly sick over Charles.

Jack looked the picture of despair. Much as he loved his family, maybe he should have spent his birthday pretending to listen to Mrs Gray! It was usually very boring doing that, but sometimes, Jack would just switch off and pretend he was a submarine captain or a film star!

Phil started to feel a little weak in the legs and Felicity became upset at this. Jack checked his youngest daughter and reassured Felicity there was nothing to worry about.

"Why don't they worry about ME for a change? Instead of causing me so much worry!" Jack muttered in a moment of madness. He turned round to see the shocked expressions of his eldest six and their Mama.

Could the day get any worse?

I love this, thanks Phil. The Maynards (and Maynardette's, Laughing) seem very true to life and realistic in this!

The meal proceeded in anxious silence. Everyone was anxious not put a foot wrong so that Papa could enjoy a birthday meal with his wife and children.

It was a relief that there were no more mishaps. The bill was paid and the Maynards made their way back to Freuedesheim.

The door was wide open and Bruno was sniffing the flower beds in the front. All the Maynards (and Anna) stopped in horror. Surely they had not been burgled?

"Wait here!" commanded Jack. He took a large tree branch and advanced to his home. Instinctively Steve did the same, Len grabbed him.

"No Steve, he said wait"

"What the? Who? I say..."

Joey braced herself as she heard her husband, she could bear it no longer. Leaving the tinies with Anna, Joey, the triplets and her three eldest sons burst into their home, to find their cousins from New Zealand and Jack hugging his sister!

"Mollie!"

"Jack! Birthday surprise! I know where you keep the spare key and Bruno knows me by sight!"

All their New Zealand cousins were older than them and the elder Maynards felt a little shy, a rare event!

There was much rejoicing in the Maynard household as Jack and Mollie's families came together.

All the cousins were curious how like each other they were. The same eyes, definitely! The boys looked more like their fathers and Auntie Mollie's daughter was the image of Granny Maynard as a little girl. Mollie Mackenzie's brood were as good natured as Uncle Jack's kids and they entertained their younger cousins with pictures and stories of new Zealand.

Kenneth Mackenzie showed Mike Maynard a lifesize replica of a moa's egg. Mike's eyes nearly popped out of his head! The moa must have been huge! Then, there was the size of the giant eagle like creature which had preyed on the big moas! Stephen and Charles avidly listened to this natural history lesson ofNew Zealand's avian inhabitants.

Con heard all about the Maori legends and Len and Margot eagerly begged Auntie Mollie to visit the Chalet School next door.

Things could not get any better thought Jack, as he relaxed in the company of the most important people in the world to him. A cricket match was hastily arranged and a game of rounders. Joey was sure Miss Annersley wouldn't mind such use of school property during the holidays.

He didn't have to worry about work, and all his family were under one roof, his sister and her family were here too. Jack thanked God he was alive. How terrible if he had truly been drowned at sea during the war? What life would Joey and the triplets have had then?

Just then, his eldest nephew bowled him a fast seamer of a ball and Jack scored his century at the crease!

"Happy Birthday Jack!" he murmured to himself.
