“He loved me, you must know that?” She looked at her friend, tucking her greying hair behind her ear. It was a love that binds and a love that stings and she had watched them together her entire life and it had hurt beyond hurt. She had loved him, every smile he gave, every touch he gave, every word he made, no other relationship ever coming close, not even that of her husband. She couldn't help how she felt. “What do you mean he loved you? What did he say? What did he do?” She looked at her friend and tried to comprehend what she’d been told. “He called me 'Baby'” the older girl replied quietly. It had been enough. …. He reached out and touched her gently, on the cheek, wiping away the grit from the graze with a handkerchief, and looked into her eyes. “Stop worrying about me, I’m fine, I just tripped on a loose stone on the path,” she said, gasping in pain but mirroring his movement and touching his face gently. “I thought we’d lost you, we all did. It’s been a bad few months” “Oh Baby” he murmured gently. ... “But why? Why did he need you? Bit more. More later. Little and not often! He lent again the chalet wall and exhaled a plume of smoke. What on earth had he just done. A solid lump of comfort she had said, but he had done nothing and now Jo was telling people they were engaged of all things. All he’d said was that he’d look after her. He hadn’t expected to her to think that; talk about jumping to the wrong conclusions and there was going to be no dissuading her now especially as she was announcing it to all and sundry. He had seen Grizel’s reaction, pretty much in character now he thought back on it, it was a miracle she hadn’t lost her temper, said something, stormed out or worse. He had no clue about what he was going to do about it though. What a bloody mess, he thought kicking a loose stone with his foot. “I’ve been looking for you” a voice said gently in the darkness “Needed some air” Jack was succinct. “Are you really… “Yes, Griselda, it looks like I am” he replied “But what about us? What about me?” her voice cracked with emotion “I..” she broke off “It’s OK..no one need know as long as we stop now” Jack reached out and pulled her towards him “You know you won’t” she replied quietly, as she nestled into him and Jack knew it too. |
