Post subject:  A Different Challenge For The Chalet School

This is a drabble I'm determined to get past a couple of posts, but as I have a few sorted that should hopefully be managed... enjoy and if anyone would fancy possibly beta reading bits for me I'd much appreciate, espeically as what I've written so far takes so long to sort  :D !!!!

Dianne Aspin was travelling on her way to the Chalet school on the Gornetz Platz. Her friends had given up trying to get her involved into conversation. She wasn’t the only student on route to the Chalet School who was distinctly out of sorts. A few compartments down the train, was a younger girl feeling very possibly the same way as Dianne did. Cathy Chiles felt very despondent; in fact she didn’t really want to be back at school. She had argued with her parents over going back to school, it was too soon after everything that had happened over the summer. She was afraid that she would forget all about them.

* * * * *

A sober Nancy Wilmot was standing in front of the steps of The Chalet School, alongside her was Kathie Ferrars, this would be the third year of the amalgamation of the School and the finishing branch, St Mildred’s. Now there was The Main Chalet School and St. Mildred’s Sixth Form college, in an adjoined building to the school. Today was the beginning of a new school year, Nancy reflected, ‘How I wish that Hilda and Nell were here still.’ Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson, former headmistresses of the school had both passed away just over three years ago. Since then the school had run as smoothly as any school can, but this year there were most certainly issues needing addressed.

Kathy discreetly elbowed Nancy in the ribs ‘Nan, are you going to address the school? They’re all waiting for you to do so.’ She the smiled mischievously at her partner ‘Or do I have to tell then that you’re mind is away with the fairies?’

Nancy Wilmot sent a brief, but laughing glance over to Kathie Ferrars, ‘I guess that I should get on with it, here goes nothing.’

‘Girls, welcome back to the School, or College for you older ones, it’s lovely to see so many of you looking like you need your heads filled with more knowledge, so we will attempt to do so over the course of the year!’ Groans from various groups of the girls were to beard, Miss Wilmot, now in Headmistress mode, smiled and twinkled at them. ‘Yes I know, but for many of you this as I say every year will be an exam year so do try your best and then I can’t ask any more of you. However, I will talk to you all after Abendessen as I’m sure you must all be hungry and wanting to be fed and watered.’ Smiles broke out all across the steps of the watching girls. ‘One last word girls, Miss Ferrars and I would like to see Dianne Aspin and Cathy Chiles in the study as soon as they are freshened up. Thank you, now off you go.’

Nancy stood and watched as the college girls filed off to the left towards their wing and the main body of the school marched neatly in towards their splasheries to freshen up. She looked at Kathie, ‘Shall we proceed to the study?’ Kathie nodded her agreement, and linked arms with her, squeezing her arm as she did so. Nancy’s face however was still sober at the up-coming interview with the two girls.

‘Do you know what you are going to say to Dianne and Cathy?’ queried Kathie at Nancy, who shook her head. Silence reigned for a minute. ‘I don’t know Kathie, but I do know that whatever I say I have to do it sooner rather than later. It will only get harder the longer it’s left, also I need them to know that we are there for them as their Head and Deputy-head.’ Nancy paused before carrying on, ‘I know from Cathy’s parents that she didn’t want to leave home to come back here, her mother suspects that she’s worried she’ll forget her sister. However, it’s Dianne I’m more concerned about, I received a phone call yesterday saying she’s hardly spoken about her brother, in fact she’s hardly spoken at all. I can’t push either of them, but they just need to know we’re here.’ At this Kathie nodded and they both lapsed into silence, both sending up silent prayers in need of help.

Wow! I'm first to comment on a brand new drabble :D

This is looking fascinating Lizzie - looking forward to seeing how it turns out. The two girls here obviously have lots in common without knowing it...

Mary I dare.....mind you they'd have been far too old for their ages if I had them...and as it is there are more than a few EBD-isms to come  ...forgive me all please!

Thankyou for all the lovely comments thus far

I'll continue as you've all asked and commented so nicely!!!

Dianne was brooding, she hadn’t even arrived at school and was already being summoned to the study, but then so was Cathy. Perhaps she was wanted to help her.

Wendy, another girl in her form, called across the Inter-V splashery, ‘Dianne what on earth, it’s way to early in the term to be in trouble, know why you’re going to the Heads already?’

The response that Wendy got was woefully short ‘Not a clue, and anyway I don’t know why she wants two of us at the same time.’

No-one else dared ask anything more of Dianne, her face was closed, almost stony in relief. Something was obviously very much on her mind, and it meant that she was very much not her chatty, lively self.

Meanwhile in the Lower-IVs splashery Cathy was being faced with the same treatment, however, lost deep in her thoughts the rest of her form had given up trying to get a response from her. ‘It’s got to be about Alasdair, otherwise I haven’t a clue.’ She thought to herself, ‘I don’t know why Dianne’s going to be there, perhaps they don’t want us in together, just want to speak to us both. If it is though I have no idea how I can manage to talk about him, then have to go off to Abendessen. I’ll-I’ll fall apart faced with all those questions, I just know that.’

With these thoughts lingering in their heads they had both rushed off to the study, by fortunate chance they had met each other just as they were entering the study corridor. They both sent each other a small smile, but both were too preoccupied with their thoughts to do much more. It was only a few more metres to the study door; both girls seemed to be getting slower and slower in their approach.

Then they were there, standing in front of the door, and neither wanted to knock. The seconds ticked past. Dianne’s thoughts were a jumble, but she just knew that Charlotte would be mentioned and she didn’t know how she would cope. She did distantly recognise that Cathy must have similar thoughts going through her head as she too seemed to be worrying and only just keeping her emotions in control.

It felt like hours had passed with both of them standing at the study door, neither meeting each others eye, one of them had to knock. Although neither of them had spoken it was obvious as the elder of the pair Dianne would have to do the deed. Therefore, before either got any more nervous or worried she knocked on the study door to hear Miss Wilmot’s call of ‘Come in.’ the two girls looked at each other once more and entered the study.

This is very interesting. I guess no-one else knows about their losses, which must be hard on them, although I'm sure they don't want to talk about it at the moment either.

Hope Nancy can make things easier for them.
