I'm not entirely sure whether this is in the right place, but ...oh well! It's my first attempt so I'm not sure whether it's going to be very good. I do realise there is a book called this, but I didn't realise until I wrote the thing. I hope it isn't too terrible!

“Morning Nancy,” Kathie cheerfully greeted her friend.
“Morning! Come over here a second would you.”
“Why? Something wrong.” Only mildly concerned Kathie came.
“You could say that. We’ve only been lumbered with yet another new babe,” Nancy growled.
Kathie’s shoulders sank. It wasn’t fair between her and Nancy they must have sheep-dogged half the staff, and it was so very tedious.
“Great. But we’d better make her welcome or we’ll have the abbess on our backs again!”
They moved over to the other side of the room where a slight, scared young woman was standing alone. A pair of large, forget-me-not blue eyes stared forlornly out of the window as tears threatened the barrier hurriedly constructed. Whilst the two friends came close she turned her back quite definitely o them. Nancy and Kathie exchanged a look of the exasperation they had felt so often when greeting new members of staff.
“Good Morning. We’ve been asked to look after you for a bit, until you get used o things here. I’m Nancy and this is Kathie, Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars in front of the girls!” Nancy said all this quite nicely hoping the still nameless mistress would take it the right way.
“Oh, thank you. I’m Susan, Miss Thomas.”
“ Right come and have some Fruhstuck and allow the girls to have a good look at you.” At her puzzled expression Kathie found it necessary to intervene.
“She means breakfast. Don’t worry you’ll pick it up soon enough. At least you didn’t come in the trilingual days!”
Susan’s eyes were wide with horror.

Interesting that they don't like looking after the new ones. Miss Thomas' look of horror is the same one I'd have had I ever been expected to speak French and German!

Thanks Cathie.

Congratulations on your first drabble :D !

I don't know how new mistresses (other than old girls) managed! How would someone like Kathie herself, who'd presumably only ever lived in England and had a degree in either maths or geography, have known enough French and German to be able to take lessons and explain complicated concepts in them :? ?!

Naughty Kathie, for feeling like that! Surely she remember what it's like to be a newbie in school.....
I look forward to seeing more.

Ah, but Kathie could speak fluent French and German on top of her native English!

Thanks. This is bliss that so many new drabbles are starting. I can understand why Kathie and Nancy would be sick of sheepdogging especially if they do it all the time

Right, here we go again! But only a little due to horrible cold and cough.

At breakfast Susan sat silently between Nancy and Kathie. No matter how hard they tried they just could not involve her in their conversation. It was as though she was elsewhere , making it decidedly difficult for Nancy and Kathie to have any conversation whatsoever without looking rude.
All three were glad when breakfast was over and they could escape.

Susan was left alone when it came to prayers, as both Nancy and Kathie were Protestant. Hesitantly, she followed the other Catholics, biting her lip anxiously. Having reached the gym she stood hovering by the door, not wanting to cause a fuss.

Finally Mlle caught sight of her and pulled her over to sit by the rest. Reluctantly she went, unable to refuse. Prayers went by swiftly and before she knew it they were over.

"In the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit," crossed her lips and that was it.

Through now to the hall where Miss Annersley said all she needed to say, then called Susan to get up to be introduced. Her heart sank at the thought of it. As she stood up, her knees knocked, and her breathing became shallow.

What's the matter with her? Is she shy? If so she's going to find it very difficult to be a teacher.

Susan's going to have a very tough time of it if she's shy. I wonder if there's a reason for it?

How could she follow those eloquent, concise words Hilda had so effortlessly let fall out of her mouth? The girls had sat so quietly, full of admiration for headmistress. No-one had stirred whilst Miss Annerserly had spoken, and now she was expected to do the same!
She had never been particularly good at public speaking, being faced by the whole school and expected to speak in a coherent way was, at one time, near on impossible. Now she could do it. She could. As long as didn't think about anything that may have happened once, she could do it and she would do it.
"Thank you so much for allowing me to come here and teach. I'm very pleased to have the privilege of teaching at such a renowned school. Thank you." With that she breathed a sigh of relief and sat back down.
A hand gently touched hers, acknowledging what it had cost her to stand up there and say that. As Susan looked towards the person on the left, a ripple of applause ran through the school for her little speech. It started quietly with just a few girls and gradually built up to each and every girl clapping.
She smiled with new found confidence. No-one had laughed at her. They had all listened with respect. Speaking to the school as one wasn't as daunting as she had made it seem. As well as support from the pupils the staff were sympathetic and kind. The person on her left, as yet unknown, had been so kind when she sat down. All of a sudden it didn't seem quite as awful as it had the night before.
Of course she hadn't yet taken a lesson...

I've finally got round to writing, well typing, some more. The typing is going v-e-r-y-v-e-r-y-s-l-o-w-l-y! It looks so much shorter typed than hand written.

Susan entered the classroom to find the girls perched on their desks chattering excitedly. Knowing that unless she took charge immediately they would never respect her, she sent them all back to their seats without hesitation.
She hadn’t been lucky with the form for her first ever lesson. When her sheepdogs asked who she had, and she replied Upper Four B, they had exchanged glances, which spoke volumes. So before she had even entered the room she was feeling decidedly apprehensive; realising this form was not going to be all sweetness and light.
More fitting would be sourness and dark, but she didn’t know that yet.

I've managed to type another part in less than a day! Most be some sort of record for me.

“Oh, Susan, you look as though you’ve had an awful time of it!” Kathie offered up her sympathies.
“It’s nothing. Really.”
“Come on, something’s definitely the matter. I hope it isn’t any of our little horrors!” Nancy and Kathie were well aware of their duties as sheepdogs, and it would never do for her to be unhappy already.
“No…no…well…no. it’s nothing.” Determined to appear as though nothing was the matter she forced a smile on her face.
“Well, we can’t make you. But if anything is ever the matter you can tell us, and, of course, may tell us!” Kathie was worried about this new mistress, but didn’t want to push her.
Resolving to have a word with Nancy as soon as possible about her; she pulled Susan over to the rest of the staff. No point letting her brood. It wouldn’t make it any better.
Before long they were both immersed in the conversation, which flowed freely amongst the staff.
However, such lively chatter was enough to distract anyone, no matter what. Had they been a group of Middles they would have been soundly told off for making so much noise.
Susan may not have contributed much, but it was understandable. The talk was all of Old Girls, various families and what they had done over the long summer holidays, none of whom she knew. Kathie could well sympathise with this, herself not being one of the many Old Girls. She wasn’t a born and bred Chalet School Girl. Nor did she want to be!

I can imagine that all the talk about Old Girls - especially with Joey popping in all the time - must have seemed very cliquey and driven new mistresses with no previous CS connections mad  .

Abendessen was over, and Miss Annersley had invited the staff to have coffee in the salon.
As the staff mingled, falling into their normal groups, Miss Annersley noticed that her newest member of staff standing slightly apart. It had taken her awhile to notice, as Kathie was keeping a sharp eye on her most recent sheep. Nancy had become increasingly impatient with Susan’s nervousness and was inclined to leave her alone. Kathie, however only felt pity for her.
Miss Annersley made her way over to that group of friends. It was a fairly small group just: Kathie, Nancy, Sharlie, Ruth and, on the outskirts, Susan. They were a tight knit little coterie, who didn’t take new people into their arms all that easily. They weren’t deliberately unkind, just a little exclusive perhaps.
“Susan! I was just coming to see how today went.” There was a hint of laughter in Hilda’s beautiful, melodic voice lending it it’s warmth.
“Oh, very well. Thank you!” Surprise was the most noticeable thing about her response.
“Good. I’m perfectly awful at maths myself, so I can not see the attraction of teaching it. Someone has to, though, I suppose!”
“I…I…I like how logical it is. How one thing leads to another with a definite answer.”
Hilda shuddered and laughed, “ Urgh! Logic. How horrid. English is far better!”
She isn’t trying to convert you, Susan is she?” Kathie groaned, “She’s always trying to convince us of the wonders of English. Well, I still haven’t broken after all these years!”
“No, but English is so much pleasanter. Far more of the girls enjoy English compared to maths, or even science for that matter.”
“Too right Ruth. We are clearly the most superior department!”
“Maths is simply misunderstood…” began Nancy
“Misunderstood is the right word for it. No-one understands it, apart from a few, strange beings, like yourselves, who claim that it is logical!” Hilda was adamant that she was right.
As the debate became more and more heated, Susan took a step way. She wasn’t ready yet to join in with the merciless teasing. Just one or two people she could cope with but with virtually the whole of the staff, it was a bit too much.
The large bay window drew her towards it. A large, velvet covered seat filled the space between the room and window. Beyond the glass was the school gardens, which had been laid to frame the lovely lake in the distance.
The lake was as blue as sapphires and as still as a photograph. Not a single thing dared to break the perfect glassy surface. Sandy beaches went around most of the lake. It was beautiful. A real example of perfection.
Thinking of perfection brought back to her the memories of the behaviour U4b earlier that day. It certainly hadn’t been perfect.
