Post subject:  Maurice and Charlie

Mollie Bettany folded up the letter from her youngest son with a sigh, while she understood that this opportunity to go to France with Charlie Benson, whoever Charlie Benson was, one of his friends from school she presumed, was too good to be missed., she would miss him. Maurice’s letter was full of how Charlie’s father had got hold of tickets to the Five Nations International and Mollie knew how much Maurice loved rugby and since his 18th birthday was drawing closer she knew that he was growing up and needed to spread his wings a little.

She smiled across the table at her youngest daughter. ‘Looks like it’s just thee, me and your father this half term, sweetheart’.
Daphne gave a gappy smile in return, an afterthought to the long Bettany family she was used to spending most of her time as an only child. Peggy and Bride were both in their twenties and married with the next generation coming along nicely, though Mollie didn’t get to see her grandson as often as she would have liked ideally she knew young families needed time together, Rix, Peggy’s twin, was undergoing his medical training and was deep in clinicals, John was preparing for his final exams at university and Maeve was at school in Switzerland and too far to return for half term, though the Easter holidays weren’t too far off and all of them, including the two spouses and young Alan would be home for at least a long weekend then.

When Maurice received the letter from his mother assuring him that she had no objections to him spendign half term abroad he did feel some guilt, he hated lying to her yet he couldn’t see any other way of getting their plans to work.
‘Charlie!’ he yelled across the rugby pitch to a well huddled figure, dark hair just showing over the turned up collar of the big coat ‘It’s ok, we can go, both our parents have agreed now and I’ve got the cash needed, won’t be long and it’ll all be sorted’

I bet they're going for the wine, women and song. If Charlie's a boy, that is.

Three weeks later they disembarked at the Gard de L’Est station, Maurice dragging a suitcase behind him.
‘Where do you think we go now, Maury?’ Charlie asked, pulling a pair of woollen black gloves on, before squinting at the address on a letter. ‘Where is Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard?’ The snow was blowing heavily around them and neither could see to the other side of the road, never mind read any street signs.
‘Excusemoi, mousieur’ Maurice approached a man, wishing he had his twin with him, or at least paid more attention when she had tried to teach him French, ‘Ferme le bec’ was not going to help him in this situation. ‘Um, ou est la Boulevard de Jeanne d’Arc?’. The heavily set man looked back at him in wonderment before pouring forth with a torrent of French. ‘Sorry, pardon je ne comprende pas. Ou est les sewers?’ he uttered with a vague recollection of chasing an 11 year old Maeve round the quadrant saying that was why girls were so stinky if sisters were named after the sewerage works.

The man seemed to recognise the words and pointed them down the street, Maurice and Charlie set off, huddled close against the blizzard howling round them. Unfortunately instead of reaching their destination they ended up in front of the entrance to the Parisian drainage system.
‘Maury this is no good, let’s go back to the train station and ask at the information desk, maybe they speak English, or have a map or something.’
Maurice agreed and they headed back the way they had come. As they approached the big station Charlie bumped into a petite French woman who was hurrying in the same direction to get some shelter. Both landed in a heap on the floor, Maurice bent to help his friend up, asking anxiously if anyone had been hurt before turning to the darkhaired stranger.
‘Maurice? Maurice Bettany?’ she asked incredulously.

‘What are you doing in Paris? Your aunt didn’t say you were planning to come, I would have invited you for a meal if I had known. I haven’t seen you since that last holiday in Yorkshire, good thing Many Bushes could take such a large extension, though with only your parents and you second twins and us with our three both families probably could have fitted in the main part of the cottage. Isn’t it a terrible day if I hadn’t had to take my daughter to the station to meet with the escort picking up the girls after their half term I wouldn’t have ventured over the doorstep. Oh I am being rude, ignoring your friend. Pleased to me you, cherie’ she extended a hand to the huddled figure

Charlie was still sitting on the floor, although neither of those standing had noticed the puddle of pinky fluid spreading over the nearby snow.
‘Come on Charlie, let me give you a hand getting up’. Maurice bodily lifted his friend to a standing position. ‘Charlie this is an old family friend of my parents Simone De Bersac. Tante Simone this is my… my friend Charlotte Benson.
