All the bunny food has worked, but the wrong bunnies have come to my house now! I don't know if I can keep up with two drabbles at the same time, especially as I don't really have the time for one, but the bunnies wouldn't be gainsaid  .

"Is that new chap still coming to dinner tonight?" Len asked as she poured Reg's coffee.
"Yes, as far as I know," said Reg. "Don't worry, he seems nice enough. What are you going to cook?"
"I got a piece of beef yesterday," Len answered. "I thought I'd roast it and make Yorkshire puddings to go with it. We've got plenty of vegetables to go with it, and lots of apples, so I shall do apple crumble for dessert."
"Sounds great," said Reg, his mouth full of toast. "Can I get you anything on my way home?"
"Have you got a bottle of wine we can open?" she asked him.
"Yes, I think so."
"Then I won't need anything else," she told him. "You'd better hurry, Reg, or you'll be late."
Reg groaned, but stood up and gathered up the notes he had been looking over the previous evening. "Have a good day," he said, leaning over to kiss the top of her head.
"You too." Len watched with a smile as he slurped down his coffee and headed out of the pretty chalet that had been their home for the past five years. She finished her breakfast at a more leisurely pace, glad that for today at least, she did not have to go to work. It was wonderful being a teacher, but it was also very tiring and much as she enjoyed the work and loved the girls in her care, it was nice to think that every now and again there were weekends when she did not have to go to the school. There was so much housework to do, and it would be lovely to have the time to give the chalet a thorough cleaning.
Len spent the morning cleaning and tidying the chalet, and doing lots of washing. Even though there were only two of them, it was amazing how quickly the wash basket filled up and how rapidly the ironing pile grew. After a light lunch, Len began on the dinner. She enjoyed cooking, as she did not often have time for it, and she whistled cheerfully to herself as she prepared the food. Soon the chalet was filled with the delectable odours of roasting beef and stewing apples and Len was filled with contentment.
Once everything was cooking and the table set, Len went off to change her clothes and do her hair ready for the arrival of the visitor. She slipped out of her old trousers and shirt and had a quick bath before putting on a particularly pretty dress, one that Reg had bought for her and that she had not often worn. She swept her hair up elegantly, sprayed herself with a light floral perfume and clipped on gold earrings. By the time that Reg arrived, she looked every inch the perfect hostess and she was looking forward to a pleasant evening in Reg's company.

Reg arrived punctually, something rather unusual, as he was frequently delayed by things happening at the San. With him was a tall, fair man whose grey eyes somehow looked vaguely familiar.
"Come in," said Reg, ushering their guest into the living room. "This is my wife, Len. Len, this is our new orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Benedict Culver."
"Pleased to meet you." Dr. Culver extended his hand and Len shook it, guessing why there was something about him that she recognised.
"Culver?" she asked curiously.
"I think you might know my sister Gill," he said with a grin.
"Yes, I certainly do," agreed Len. "I've also met Hawk once or twice." She turned to Reg. "You didn't tell me that Gill's brother was coming to work at the San."
"You didn't ask," he pointed out reasonably. "What can I get you to drink, Dr. Culver?"
"We've got sherry or I could make tea or coffee," said Len.
"Sherry would be lovely, thanks," Dr. Culver replied.
Len poured three glasses of sherry and they sat down in the living room. Reg stretched his legs out in front of him and gave a happy sigh. He was glad to be able to spend the evening at home, for there were not many evenings a week that he and Len got to sit down together. Of course it would have been nicer if he could have had her to himself, but Dr. Culver seemed like a nice enough man and he would not stay too late for he had an early shift the next morning.
"What brings you to the Platz, Dr. Culver?" Len asked their guest.
"I have heard so much about it from Gill and I was fed up with the endless rain and cold of England," answered Dr. Culver. "When I heard that there was a position for an orthopedic surgeon at the San I jumped at the chance to apply. And here I am. How long have you been here?"
"I've lived here since I was ten," Len told him. "Reg has been here almost as long."
"It's one of the best places in the world," Reg added with a smile at his wife. "In the summer it's lovely here, and in the winter it's even lovelier."
"That's not what you say when you have to chip the ice off the car before you go to work in the morning," Len reminded him with a grin. "And that's definitely not what you said when you got snowed in at the San for three days last winter."
Reg laughed. He had not been amused to be stranded in the San during an unusually severe storm, and had told Len that next time there was any being snowed up to be done, he would do it in the comfort of his own home, for he would not object to being snowed up with her for weeks on end.
Len disappeared into the kitchen to check that the Yorkshire puddings were rising properly and as she put the meat ready for Reg to carve, the telephone rang. She let Reg deal with it, hoping that it was not her mother wanting a lengthy chat, and drained the vegetables.
"Len, that was the San." Reg appeared in the kitchen, already pulling his overcoat on again. "I have to go back."
"Oh, Reg," she said reprovingly.
"It's Mrs. Anderson," Reg told her. "She's very poorly."
Len didn't ask if one of the other doctors could see to Mrs. Anderson - if Reg was needed by one of his patients, he would always go to them. "What about Dr. Culver?" she asked in a whisper.
"Give him some dinner," said Reg. "It's a shame to let all your hard work go to waste. Maybe I shall get home in time to take him home. If not, he's been here a week, so he'll be able to find his own way if you direct him out onto the main road."
Although she would have liked to ask Reg to stay, Len knew that there was no point. He had given himself heart and soul to his job and she knew that he always would. She knew that she was important to him, but that at the moment Mrs. Anderson's need was the greatest and so it was to her that he would go. "Make sure you get something to eat at the San," was all Len said as he kissed her, and then he was disappearing out of the back door and she heard him start the car and drive off.

Me and my obsession with Culvers.... I rather like the idea of another ten minutes each hour - but only when I'm not at work!

Len went back to the sitting room, where Dr. Culver was sitting in an armchair, long legs stuck out in front of him and crossed at the ankles. The evening sunshine was streaming through the window onto his head, shining onto his fair curls and making them gleam like burnished gold. He was flicking through one of Reg's medical journals, but he looked up as Len approached.
"I'm sorry, but Reg has had to go back to work," she explained.
"Yes, he said he was needed at the San." Dr. Culver stood up. "I can go now, if it's not convenient for you," he told her.
"No, stay for dinner," Len insisted. "I've cooked enough for three, and it's a shame to waste it."
"Thank you," he said. "I'd like to stay. But you must let me come and give you a hand."
"You can carve the meat if you like," Len suggested, for she was not very good at cutting even slices.
Dr. Culver followed her into the kitchen and set to work carving the joint of beef while Len dished up the vegetables and rescued the Yorkshire puddings which she had forgotten about. She poured gravy over the meal and then carried the plates into the tiny dining room. While Dr. Culver sat down, she fetched the bottle of wine that had been left uncorked in the kitchen and went to pour a glass of wine for her guest.
"When I looked at all these chalets from the outside I thought they looked terribly quaint," Dr. Culver said, "But they're so comfortable inside. I know this sounds silly, but in here it's hard to believe we're just in a little wooden building."
Len chuckled. "I suppose you're right," she agreed, glancing around the room. "We've lived here for five years now, and it is really comfortable."
"I visited Gill and her family at the weekend, and their place is just as homely," Dr. Culver continued. "I'm in lodgings at the San at the moment, but I have to say that I'd really like to move out, into my own chalet. Then I'd feel that I really am in Switzerland."
"When the snow comes you'll feel that you are really in Switzerland," Len told him.
"When will that be?"
As they ate, Len told him about the onset of winter, and how lovely the Platz looked once the snow had fallen. Used to English slush, Dr. Culver told her that he couldn't wait for winter and was eager to learn to ski and do some tobogganing.
"If you've finished, Dr. Culver, I'll get the pudding," said Len, as he sat back in his seat and finished the last of his wine.
"Please, my name's Benedict," he told her. "You don't have to call me Dr. Culver."
"And I'm Len," she reminded him. "I hope you like apple crumble."
"It's one of my favourites," he assured her.
Len took out the plates and soon returned with a large dish of apple crumble. She had put some in the fridge for Reg to eat later, for it was his favourite dessert, but there was plenty left and Dr. Culver happily disposed of two helpings, both well doused in cream.
"I don't think Switzerland is going to be the most healthy country for my waistline," he remarked when he finally laid down his spoon.
"Oh, we walk a lot up here on the Platz," Len assured him. "And if you're planning on doing all this skiing, you'll keep in shape. It's just that the air up here makes one feel very hungry all the time."
"I hope you're right," he said.
"Would you like some coffee now, or do you prefer tea?"
"Coffee would be wonderful," he answered. "If it's not too much trouble."
"It's no trouble at all," Len assured him, gathering up the dishes and taking them into the kitchen, where she ran hot water for the washing up. She put the coffee percolator on and as it heated up, she started on the washing up. Dr. Culver came into the kitchen, carrying the wine glasses and sundry other things from the table. "Where shall I put these?" he asked.
"Oh, please go into the sitting room and I'll bring you your coffee," Len told him. "You don't have to do that."
"Yes, I do," he corrected her. "I've just enjoyed one of the best meals I've had since arriving in Switzerland, so the least I can do is help you clear up." He went back into the dining room and was soon back with the table cloth and mats. Brushing aside Len's protests, he took the tea towel from its hook and began to dry the plates that she had washed, stacking them neatly on the worktop.
Once the work was done, Len poured the coffee and they went into the sitting room. "Thank you for your help," she said, sinking down onto the settee.
"Thank you for dinner," he replied.
"I'm just sorry that Reg couldn't have been here as well," she told him. "Then he could have answered any questions you might have about the San."
"He does that at work," Dr. Culver assured her. "As does Armand, Gill's husband. Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming, it's great."
"Yes, the people up here are wonderful," Len agreed. "It's rather a tradition to be friendly."
"Rather different from where I was before," he told her. "London is not a friendly place!"
"I can imagine it being large and impersonal," she said, for she had little experience of the English capital.
"It's exactly that." Benedict put down his empty coffee cup and stood up. "Thank you so much for a lovely evening, Len. I'd better be off now, before it's too dark to find my way home."
"Do you know which way to go?" she asked, standing up as well.
"Along the road and turn left," he said, "and then I keep on that road until I've passed Gill's place. After that, I turn right."
"Yes, that's right," she assured him.
Dr. Culver pulled on his coat and followed Len to the front door. "Thank you for a lovely evening," he said.
"Good night," she replied.
"Good night." Benedict stepped over the doorstep and strode away up the path, turning to wave as he reached the street.
Aware of a nip in the air, Len closed the door and went back into the chalet, wondering how long she would have to wait until Reg came home. Sometimes he was gone for hours, but sometimes he would not return until the next morning. It all depended on how his patient was doing; until he had done everything he could do, he would remain at the San.

Reg did not get home until the next morning, when he came in just as Len was getting breakfast.
"You look exhausted," she observed unnecessarily. "How's Mrs. Anderson?"
"Hovering on the brink," he told her miserably. "I don't think we're going to be able to save her."
As Mrs. Anderson had been seriously ill for the duration of her stay in the San, Len was not surprised to hear this. Reg hated losing patients, though, and always took their deaths personally. Len hugged him. "You didn't think she'd live the month out when she arrived, though," she reminded him. "And now you've given her this time with her husband and their son. They wouldn't have had these weeks if it wasn't for you."
"I know," said Reg, holding Len tightly. "I just wish I could have given her longer. Her son is only fifteen. He's too young to lose his mother."
"Go up and have a bath and I'll make you some breakfast," said Len, kissing him tenderly. "Then you can have some sleep and you'll feel better."
Reg nodded. "Thanks darling," he said and he stomped slowly off upstairs.
Len prepared some breakfast for them both and by the time that Reg returned, she had the meal ready on the table. He looked a little better after his bath, but Len knew by the dark circles under his eyes that she would not see much of him that day. After working almost twenty of the last twenty four hours he would be fit for nothing but a day in bed. Len was used to this, although she knew she would never like it. She reminded herself that she knew how a doctor could never call his life his own, which she had always known from living with her father, and so she should have guessed how little of Reg she would see when they were married. It was still a shock, though. She had this vision of them going to the theatre, or out to dinner, walking in the mountains like any other young couple, but it so seldom happened. They didn't even get to go on holiday very often, and when they did, Reg usually called the San a couple of times just to check up on his patients. Of course it was great that he was so dedicated, and everyone on the Platz spoke so highly of him, but it just didn't always seem fair that he would always be thinking of his patients instead of her.
Len knew she was being selfish. Reg loved her as she loved him. He regretted having to spend so much time at the San on some level at least, for he apologised to her for leaving her alone and for making her cancel any plans that she might have made for them. But that didn't stop him from running as soon as anyone from the San called, a little voice whispered to her. It hadn't stopped him from disappearing for the whole of her last birthday, leaving her to cancel the dinner they had been going to eat in a lovely Interlaken restaurant and spend the evening on her own. True he had bought her a beautiful gold necklace and three books she had wanted, so she had been able to spend the evening reading, but it wasn't the same. Another doctor could have tended to Mr. Imhof - he had been released from the San just two days later as he had completely recovered from his pneumonia - but Reg had gone anyhow.
Len shut off these unwifely thoughts and poured Reg's coffee. "I'm going to lunch at Freudesheim," she reminded him. "I'll cook your dinner when I get back."
"Oh, I shall probably be back at the San by then," he told her. "I'm due back at two. Don't worry about me, I can grab a sandwich there. Have a nice lunch."
"You really should have more than a sandwich," Len told him. "You haven't had a decent meal for three days now. You can't exist on sandwiches."
"I'll have a decent meal tomorrow," he promised. "I'm planning to be home by four and we'll eat together, all right?"
"I'll be late getting back - I have my A level class on Monday, remember?"
"Then I'll start dinner ready for when you get home," he said, smiling across at her. "It feels like ages since I last saw you properly. We'll have a nice evening together."
"I'm looking forward to it already," Len told him, ignoring the little voice that was telling her how unlikely it was that Reg's plans would come to fruition.

Len set off for Freudesheim once Reg had gone to sleep. It was a lovely day, but there was a definite autumnal feel to the sunshine. Len did not live far from her childhood home, and generally went off to Freudesheim on a Sunday to meet up with her mother and go to church with her. She then returned to Freudesheim with Jo to have dinner, after which she and her mother would catch up on all the news of the family and the school. It was also a good chance to see whichever of her siblings happened to be around.
As she sat in the little chapel at her mother's side, Len did her best to concentrate on the service. She had attended the chapel ever since it had opened, and loved the services there. They were calming and yet uplifting and she never left without feeling better about anything that had been worrying her. She prayed that she might be more accepting of Reg's decisions about working, and not be so irritated by his constant absences. She had vowed to be a supportive wife, and yet she was always feeling discontented; she needed to remember how she had told herself that she would accept the life of a doctor's wife and she should start by giving up her expectations of keeping Reg to herself.
Len glanced around the chapel and smiled across at some of her pupils who were sitting in the next row. Further down the church she saw Gill Culver and her family. Gill was busy with her youngest daughter who seemed determined to shatter the quiet of the little chapel with her yells, and next to her, his golden head bent in prayer, was her brother Benedict. Len stood for the last hymn, her mind going firmly back to the service, so that she felt refreshed and ready to come to terms with Reg's obsession with work by the time she left the chapel.
Once the service finished, Jo stopped outside the chapel to greet her numerous acquaintances, and Len found plenty of people ready to talk to her. Several of her students dashed up to her, eagerly asking if she would be accompanying them on their ramble that afternoon. Len was flattered by the groans of disappointment when she said that she would not, but would see them in school the next morning.
As they rushed off to join the line of girls heading back to the school, Len turned back to Jo, only to find that she was talking animatedly to Gillian Culver and her brother.
"Genevieve's a real show-off," Gill was saying with a smile at the small girl in her arms. "She likes everyone to notice her."
"She's no worse than Mike or Felix were," Jo reassured her. "All tinies find it difficult to stay quiet in church."
Len chuckled, remembering some of Felix's outrageous comments during the especially quiet part of services.
"Have you met my brother?" asked Gill. "He's just come to work at the San."
"Yes, he had dinner at our house yesterday," Len answered, shaking Dr. Culver's hand.
"And a delightful dinner it was, too," he said with a smile.
"Len's an excellent cook," Jo agreed, with just a touch of pride in her voice. "I hope you'll do us the honour of dining with us soon, Dr. Culver? Gill, perhaps you and Armand could come, too. I'll arrange a date with Jack and let you know."
"We'd love to come," said Gill, reaching down to take the hand of the little girl at her side. "We'd better be off. Goodbye."
"Goodbye Len," said Benedict, taking the hands of Gill's twins. "Goodbye Mrs. Maynard."
Len watched as they headed off down the path. "He's so like Gill," Jo was saying. "Such a dashing looking young man."
"He's very nice," she agreed, remembering how easy it had been to talk to him over dinner. "And Reg gets on well with him, too."
"Dear Reg gets on well with everyone," said Jo fondly. "Come on, Len, let's get home. I really need a nice cup of coffee."

Len enjoyed one of Anna's sumptious meals and a long chat with Jo; Jack was, of course, busy at the San. Once they had eaten tea, which consisted of Anna's freshly made bread and some gorgeous cream buns, Len set off home. She noticed that the sky was darkening earlier and earlier and knew that soon winter would be upon them. Len could not feel sorry about this. Summer was lovely, with its endless sunny days and vibrant colours, the beautiful flowers all across the Platz and the feeling of cheerfulness a lovely bright morning could provide, but there was something special about the snowy days of winter. The Platz was even more beautiful wearing its cloak of snow, with a million diamonds sparkling in the pale winter sunlight, and then there was the pleasure of a roaring fire on a chilly evening. And, occasionally, Reg would be there, and they could sit in the firelight and behave like any other young and happily married couple. Occasionally, there would be whole hours when the San and its occupants could be forgotten and the silence outside the chalet led Len to believe that she and Reg were the only people in the world.
By the time she got home, Reg had already gone back to work, just a plate covered with crumbs and a half empty tea cup to show that he had been there. With a sigh, Len tidied up the kitchen and went upstairs to have a bath. She luxuriated in the warm water for a long time, having nothing to hurry out for, and then she pulled on her dressing gown and went to sit in the living room. They had a television, but she did not feel like watching it; instead she sat in the darkness, looking out of the window at the starry sky and wondering why she was always the one left alone.
Remembering that she had gone out only that day, leaving Reg to get himself an inadequate lunch, Len chided herself for her selfish thoughts. They both worked, and they both enjoyed their jobs. She frequently stayed later in school than she needed to, making sure all her marking was done and all her work prepared for the next day. She agreed to give up her half terms more often than she needed, to accompany the girls on their trips, for she thoroughly enjoyed the more relaxed atmosphere of the half term exeat. As she realised this, Len wondered if she only stayed worked longer and longer hours in school because it was better to be there, amongst people, than to be sitting alone at home. Would she be more eager to hurry home each evening if she knew that Reg would be there? Sighing, Len knew that she would. She would do her job to the best of her ability, but she would only do the hours she was expected to do. After that, she would come home to spend the evening or the weekend with her husband, which was what she really wanted to do. She did not want him to be working every hour of every day, she wanted to be with him. She wanted to know that she was as important to him as he was to her. Again Len chided herself for being unfair. She knew that Reg loved her and she did not doubt it really. She just did not like the feeling that he loved the San more.

During the next week, Len saw as much of Reg as usual - the few minutes they usually shared across the breakfast table when both were getting ready to go to work, and one evening when he had finished work and come home early and she had enjoyed an afternoon off and so was able to prepare a nice dinner for him. He had not managed to get home for the promised evening off on Monday, for Mrs. Anderson had died and he had spent some time consolling her family. Len knew that he found it helpful to spend time with the families of patients he lost, and did her best not to begrudge them this time, but she could not help but feel disappointed that he did not make it home. As he managed to get the evening off later in the week and they had a romantic candlelit dinner together, Len felt that it all worked out well. He had been attentive and charming and they had laughed and held hands between courses. Everything had been just as Len had always hoped and dreamed it would when they were married, and she felt that she could not be happier.
At the weekend Jo had managed to arrange for Jack to be at home, and so had made good her promise to invite Gill, Armand and Benedict to dinner. She included Len and Reg in the invitation and as she accepted, Len had privately decided that she did not fancy the chances of four of the San's doctors being allowed to have a nice evening off simultaneously. Something unexpected would come up and at least one of them would be called away. She could only hope that it wasn't Reg; she was probably being selfish and greedy again, but she really wanted to enjoy a pleasant meal at Freudesheim and then walk home with Reg afterwards, revelling in the delights of sharing a beautiful starlit evening with him.
As they dressed ready for the meal, Len glanced across at Reg, thinking how handsome he looked in his suit, his dark hair immaculate and his face looking less tired and drawn that it had of late. If only they could enjoy their evening, he might finally lose the slight tension in his shoulders and start to relax a bit. It always took a while for him to recover from the death of a patient, but a pleasant evening with jovial company would help him enormously.
For his part, Reg had been watching Len, too. He thought, as he always did, how lovely she looked with her stunning hair swept up on her shapely head, her beautiful complexion that owed nothing to the use of make-up and her slim figure elegantly clad in a well cut cream dress. Even after five years of marriage, he still had moments when he could scarcely believe that she had become his wife. After dreaming about her for so many years, after all the waiting and hoping he had done, it was sometimes unbelievable that his dreams had come true. She was everything he had dreamed she would be and more and he loved her dearly. He would do anything for her and wanted to spend the rest of his days loving and cherishing her.

Len's dreams of a starry night were quickly dashed. When they left their chalet it was raining, and the sky was overcast. Holding their umbrellas over them, they walked briskly to Freudesheim, unable even to hold hands as the umbrellas kept them apart. When they arrived, Gill and Armand were already there; Armand and Jack were deep in discussion about work while Jo was chatting easily with Gill and Kathy Ferrars, presumably invited to make up the numbers. Having put their coats in the hall cupboard, Len and Reg sat down on a chintzy sofa, accepting the glasses of fruit punch that Anna brought them, and allowing Jo to draw them into the conversation.
A few minutes later Dr. Culver arrived, his fair hair wet, but his grey eyes twinkling. He greeted Gill with a kiss and shook hands with everyone else. Despite the rain, his hand was warm and his grip firm when he grasped Len's hand. His arrival brought about the end of Jack and Armand's talk of work and by the time Anna called them to the dining room, they were enjoying a lively conversation about the relative merits of classical and popular music. Len had guiltily admitted to liking the Beatles, and Benedict had agreed that they were very talented and well worth listening to.
Anna had excelled herself with the dinner. She had made a traditional Austrian meal in honour of the new doctor's visit, and by the time that she served the appelstrudel they were all feeling very full. Conversation had been far ranging, and Benedict had proved to be an amusing dinner guest. He had made everyone laugh at his jokes and as they walked home Reg told Len how much he liked the new doctor.
"He's a great chap," he said enthusiastically. "He's very popular already. And he's proving to be an excellent surgeon, too."
"He was very entertaining this evening," Len agreed with a chuckle. "Mother will be inviting him to dinner all the time in the hope of pairing him up with one of the mistresses. He's perfect for someone - brother of a former Head Girl, handsome doctor, amusing, what more could any of us want?"
"What more indeed," said Reg with a laugh. "Why does it always rain when we have the chance to be alone together?"
Len bit back a comment about how little time they spent alone together. "It doesn't always rain," she told him.
"It did when we last went to Freudesheim together," he reminded her. "It absolutely poured and we drove there. And the time before that, when we were going to go for a walk up into the mountains."
"That was nearly three months ago." Len didn't mean to sound bitter, but the words were out before she could stop them.
"Was it?" Reg sounded genuinely surprised. "I would have said it was only just a month ago."
"No, it was three months. It was during the holidays."
Reg fell silent as he realised that she was right. It was hard to believe how the time flew, and he felt a moment of guilt for spending so little time with Len. And yet there was so much to be done at the San, so many patients needing his skills and his time. how could he turn his back on them? Len would always be there and he did his best to spend time with her when the pressures of work allowed. The patients were often so ill and needed him immediately. They frequently didn't have the luxury of next week or next month. If he did not see them straight away they might never recover, as Mrs. Anderson had not recovered. As he thought of her, Reg felt the familiar feeling of misery at his own failure sweep over him. He wondered what else he could have done, whether if he had done things differently he could have saved her.
"Have you got the key?" Len was asking, her voice breaking across his thoughts. He had hardly even realised that they were home, so engrossed in his thoughts had he been. He pulled it from his pocket and unlocked the door, eager now to get inside out of the rain. Len put her wet clothes in the kitchen and disappeared upstairs without a word, and he knew that he had upset her, although he was not really sure how.
Reg hung up his wet coat and trudged upstairs, wishing that the evening had ended differently. He had not been called into work, and he had hoped that they could have curled up in front of the fire for a while before heading up to bed. It seemed like ages since he had last held her in his arms; based on his miscalculation of time it probably was ages, he realised. But by the time he had washed and changed, Len was curled up beneath the plumeau, looking as if she was fast asleep. Reg got carefully into bed at her side, and lay in the darkness, wondering what he could do to put things right between them once more.

I got the name of the Austrian casserole thing off the internet; I hope it wasn't a joke and that there really is a dish with that name! Anyhow, it sounded delightful, so that's what Len will be cooking.
Reg headed off to work on Sunday without seeing Len; she was still asleep when he woke and he didn't like to disturb her. She worked very hard at school and then came home to do the housework and take care of him, so she deserved a lie in when she got the chance. He looked down at her for a moment, silently vowing to make sure he got an evening off in the week and to make reservations for Len's favourite restaurant on the Platz. They could have a romantic dinner and then, weather permitting, a pleasant stroll home. He slipped silently out of the bedroom and downstairs, pausing only to make a piece of toast before heading off to the San.
When Len awoke she was not surprised to find Reg gone. He was considerate, never waking her unnecessarily, and she was grateful for the opportunity of sleeping in. It was lovely to wake and stretch out in bed, knowing that you had nothing pressing to do and nowhere you needed to rush off to. But however relaxing Sunday might be, Len found that the rest of the week was very busy. She was late back from work on both Monday and Tuesday, and on each evening Reg had been at work. On Wednesday she had the afternoon off and Reg was due to be home at a reasonable hour, so she decided to cook a nice meal for them both. He had seemed a little out of sorts all week, she had noticed, and she wanted to wine and dine him and then try to find out what had upset him. She had even got a new recipe from Anna for schinkenfleckerln, an Austrian ham and noodle casserole, and so on her way home from school she stopped off at the supermarket to buy some ingredients.
She bought three big bags of groceries and was just wondering how on earth she was going to stagger home with it all when she heard her name being called.
"Len?" Dr. Culver was leaving the supermarket behind her, so Len stopped and waited for him to catch up with her. "Can I help you with your shopping?" he asked, for he only had one bag of his own.
"No, I can't possibly put you so far out of your way," Len protested, but Benedict ignored her and took two of the bags from her.
"You aren't putting me out," he assured her. "I've just finished work, and it's a lovely day. I'd enjoy the walk."
"Yes, the weather has been very changeable lately," said Len as he fell into step with her. "At least it's not raining."
"I have to admit that I even enjoy the rain here," said Benedict earnestly. "It poured the other day - ah, Saturday, when we went to Mrs. Maynard's - and as the clouds cleared in the afternoon and the mountains crept back into view it was lovely."
At his words, Len's eyes were drawn up to the lofty peaks that surrounded the Platz. "The mountains are always lovely," she agreed. "I missed them so much when I was at Oxford."
"Are they very difficult to climb?"
"Some of them are tougher than others," she replied. "I'm not really into mountineering, I'm afraid, so I don't know much about them. I think it's better to do the more difficult ones in better weather, though."
"Well, I won't worry about that until next summer," Benedict decided. "I think I'd like to have a go at some of them, if I can find someone willing to take me."
"There are lots of local people who would be willing to take you," Len told him. "Well, here we are. Thank you so much for carrying the shopping for me."
"It's my pleasure." Benedict waited until she had unlocked the chalet before handing her the bags. "Goodbye."
"Goodbye." Len closed the door and carried her purchases through to the kitchen, glad that he had helped her. The bags really were heavy and her fingers would have been numb by now if she had carried the bags herself.
By the time that Reg got home, the schinkenfleckerln was just about cooked, and the vegetables were nearly ready to serve. Reg went upstairs to change and then returned to help Len set the table.
"Smells good," he said, sniffing hungrily. "What is it?"
Len explained about the recipe Anna had given her and as she dished up the casserole Reg looked approvingly at it. "It does look good," she agreed.
They carried their plates into the dining room and found that the casserole was every bit as good as it looked. As they ate they talked easily, just as they had always done, and afterwards Reg made coffee while Len cleared up. They went into their cosy sitting room and Reg sat down on the settee, beckoning to Len to sit beside him. He had switched on the television to watch the news, and they sat in a companionable silence, sipping their coffee.
Len took their empty cups into the kitchen and by the time she had washed them, Reg was fast asleep and snoring gently.

The snows came early and Len took her usual delight in seeing the Platz looking so icily perfect. It was a pleasure to walk to school in the bracing air, and she enjoyed going skiing both on the easier slopes with the school and on the more difficult runs either on her own or with some of her friends. Christmas was approaching and she had been shopping in Interlaken, and the larder was now filling up as she made cakes and puddings and mince pies. Best of all, Reg was to have five days off over Christmas and he had also agreed to try to attend the New Year Ball with her. She still did not see as much of him as she would have liked, but with the holiday season approaching, she began to feel a little more hopeful. They would have a wonderful Christmas together and perhaps Reg would begin to see what he was missing out on by forever being at work.
Just before Christmas, once both the school proper and St. Mildred's had broken up for the holiday, Len and Reg had gone skiing with a group of friends. Several of the mistresses who made their home on the Platz accompanied them, along with a few of the doctors from the San. Benedict had been in their number, for he was learning to ski, and some of his friends had volunteered to give him some lessons. After a wonderful lunch in one of the cafes that had appeared on the Platz to cater for the winter holiday makers, they had headed off to the slopes again. Len, an expert skier after so many years spent in Switzerland, whizzed down one of the more difficult runs, relishing the feel of the wind on her face and the peace that surrounded her as she flew between the trees. She slowed as she came into the flatter, busier place where the beginners practiced, and waved at Kathie Ferrars and Nancy Wilmott, who were sitting on a bench in the sunshine.
The next minute, Len was knocked right off her feet and straight into a snowdrift, and before she could draw breath, whoever had run into her landed on top of her. Their skis tangled and Len cried out as the angle of the skis twisted her ankle painfully.
"I'm so sorry," gasped Benedict, obviously as winded as she by the fall. "Are you hurt?"
"If you stop trying to rip my boot off with my skis I'll be all right," she answered, gazing into the grey eyes inches from her own. "You?"
"Just my pride, which is extremely badly bruised," he replied with a smile, but he stopped trying to kick off his skis and tried to sit up. "I'm really sorry, Len. I'm not very good at changing direction yet."
"That's ok," she assured him. His eyes still held hers and she could not stop looking at him.
Fortunately Kathie and Nancy reached them and hauled up first Benedict and then Len. They dusted themselves down and assured their rescuers that they were unhurt. Len thanked them for their help and then shot away, eager to escape from the handsome doctor. There had been something in his eyes, just for a moment, that she had not expected to see there, and she had been alarmed by the way she could feel her heart thudding in her chest. She skied as fast as she could, eager to give herself a genuine reason for feeling breathless, and tried to direct all of her attention to the scenery around her.

How very cynical to think that Benedict planned to crash into Len; he's just not a very good skier yet!

On the eve of Christmas Eve a big party was held in the hall of the Chalet School. Those of the mistresses that lived on the Platz, either in the school or nearby, enjoyed entertaining their friends and the staff of the big San, with which the school was so closely linked. Len and Reg were both to go to the party, as Reg had just begun his Christmas holiday. Len could not remember having looked forward to an evening so much for a long time; it would be lovely to enjoy one of Karen's excellent meals in the company of Reg and other friends.
They got ready and wrapped up warmly before heading off to the school. It was a lovely clear night, with a multitude of stars twinkling down on them, and although it was not particularly romantic holding hands while wearing thick gloves, Len found a certain delight in walking along at Reg's side. She had not felt as happy for a long time, and she wondered if it was just tiredness that made her dissatisfied with her life. When they were both working hard, Len felt discontented, but once they were on holiday, able to take life a lot more slowly, she felt far more cheerful. Perhaps she had to accept that they could not have the perfect marriage as long as they both worked, and just enjoy the perfect times they did have when they came along.
When they reached the school hall, they found it festively decorated and already full of people. Some of the more musical members of the San and school staffs were playing festive music and others were laying the large trestle tables ready for the meal. Jack Maynard was dispensing drinks from a table in the corner of the room, ably assisted by Eugen Courvoisier and Frank Peters.
Karen and Anna, who had combined forces to prepare the meal, began to serve the food not long after Len and Reg had arrived. They had decided upon the traditional Austrian baked carp and had cooked it to perfection. It never ceased to amaze Len as to how the two ladies could provide such excellent food for such a large number of people - they also catered for their numerous assistants - and still manage to make it taste home cooked and not mass produced. Plenty of laughter and chatter accompanied the meal, and crackers were pulled and paper hats donned. Later, once everyone had cleared the table, Karen wheeled in the most enormous Christmas pudding that Len had ever seen, and she had seen some big puddings in her time. Miss Annersley set fire to it, leaping nimbly back so that she did not singe the lovely lime green paper crown she was wearing, and everyone applauded the magnificent blaze that followed.
Once it had burnt out, they served the pudding and Len tucked into her portion. Further down the table Kathie Ferrars let out a squeal and hastily removed from her mouth the tiny silver thimble that she had discovered. A moment later one of the doctors from the San discovered the silver coin in his dish. As Len put the last mouthful of her pudding into her mouth, she found herself biting down on something hard and once she had delicately extracted it, she discovered that it was not a coin, but a silver ring.
"So Kathie'll be lucky, Brian will be wealthy and Len..." Con's voice trailed off, as she realised that for Len at least the traditional prophecy would not come true.
Having wiped the ring off in her napkin, Len looked at it. It was the usual plain silver band used in Christmas puddings, but it looked a little bigger than normal and she discovered that it fit perfectly onto her finger.
"That's the first time I've ever had something from the pudding," said Len, half wishing that she had found the thimble. At least then she could have persuaded herself that she would have had good luck, which might have included spending more time with Reg over the next year.
Once the tables had been cleared, Mlle Lachenais presided over the urn and made her special nectar like coffee for everyone. Jo stood to sing a carol, despite protests that she had eaten so much and could not possibly sing, and then others were persuaded to give renditions of their favourite carols. They all enjoyed a good sing-a-long until some of the effects of the huge meal had worn off, and then the impromptu band struck up some dance music.
"Come on," Len said to Reg. "It's been a long time since I've tripped the light fantastic with you."
"Far too long," he agreed, amiably accompanying her to the emptier end of the hall and taking her in his arms. "Where does the time go?"
"I don't know," she said, although she did wonder if she ought to suggest that most of it went at the San. "It just flies past." She thought back over the years that she had been with Reg and could not believe that they had been together for so long. In many ways she felt no older than she had on leaving school and heading off to Oxford; it was difficult to think that she had left university more than six years ago.
But it was so nice to be dancing with Reg that Len banished all the negative thoughts firmly from her mind and concentrated on enjoying herself.

"Len, may I dance with you?"
Startled out of her thoughts by the tap on her shoulder, Len turned to smile at Jack. "Of course, Papa," she agreed. "You don't mind do you, Reg?"
"Not at all." Reg relinquished his hold on her and went to give Eugen and Frank a helping hand. Frank had been at work just that morning, so he was able to bring Reg up to date on some of his patients. Fortunately, they were doing well, and Reg did not feel that he ought to go into the San to see them.
After Jack, Len danced with Con and Jo and then the band changed music and Hilary Graves announced that they would do some country dancing. More of the younger doctors and mistresses stood up and soon they had made up sets and were enjoying the much livelier dancing. Thanks to her years at school, Len knew most of the dances and enjoyed herself enormously, and as the Chalet mistresses who did the calling were good at it, Reg was able to follow along quite easily. By the time that they came to the Circassian circle, he admitted that he was feeling quite breathless and Len unsympathetically told him he must be unfit. Unabashed, Reg continued dancing and as they changed partners Len watched happily as he whirled Miss Annersley round, followed by a pretty young nurse from the San. For her part, she danced with Miss Wilmot, and several doctors and finally ended up next to Dr. Culver.
"Hello," he said as he claimed her as his partner.
Len smiled, quite breathless herself by now. She had almost succeeded in blocking their previous encounter from her mind so it was rather disconcerting to be looking into his grey eyes once more.
"I've never done this sort of dancing before," he told her. "It's great fun, isn't it."
"Yes, it is," she agreed, trying not to notice how it felt to have her fingers held in his slim, warm hand. He swung her round and then they promenaded together and as the music changed into a waltz, he altered his grip on her and whirled her expertly around the floor. Len finally managed to look up at him, her cheeks pink from all the dancing, and her eyes bright. To her relief there was nothing perplexing in his expression at all, and she finally began to relax.
"We had some great jokes in the crackers at our end of the table," he told her, and he proceeded to tell her some of them. For cracker jokes they were surprisingly amusing, and Len found it difficult not to laugh aloud at them.
"That's better," he said as she bit her lip to stop herself from guffawing. "Now you look as if you are having fun."
Len managed to unlock her eyes from his and looked over his shoulder to where Reg was dancing with Con. "I am having fun," she told him, assuring herself that the odd feelings inside her were because of Reg being so near and not on account of anything, or anyone, else.
"You'll be pleased to hear that I went skiing yesterday and managed not to fall over at all," Benedict informed her, looking inordinately pleased with himself. "I must be improving."
"I'm glad to hear it." Len stopped dancing abruptly and stepped away from him. "I'm sorry," she said, "But I really must go and have something to drink. It's thirsty work, all this dancing." Without waiting for any reply, she turned and headed off towards the bar, where she asked for some lemonade. Relieved to have escaped from a situation in which she felt that she was way out of her depth, Len sipped her lemonade and concentrated on watching Reg and willing him to see that she was now free and to come over and join her.
"Are you feeling all right?" asked Benedict solicitously. "Perhaps you should come and sit down."
"I'm fine, thanks," she assured him, wondering why the sight of him made her feel so flustered. "I've done too much dancing, that's all."
Benedict took her arm and steered her over to an empty table. "Sit down," he suggested. "Shall I get you some water?"
"Yes, please," she agreed, more to get rid of him than because she wanted water. She watched as Benedict sought out water and then attracted Reg's attention as he headed back to Len. They reached the table simultaneously and as Benedict handed her the glass, Reg was looking at her with concern in his eyes.
"What's happened?" he asked anxiously.
"Nothing," she assured him. "It's just a bit hot in here and I've done so much dancing, that's all."
"Are you sure?" Reg sat down next to her, still looking worried about her.
"Quite sure," she replied. As she patted Reg's hand, Benedict smiled at her and then slipped away, leaving Len to assure Reg that there was nothing wrong with her. "Don't look like that," she said wrapping her fingers around his. "I'm fine. Come on, let's go and have a romantic walk in the moonlight and spend the rest of the evening curled up in front of the fire."
Recognising the glint in her eye, Reg grinned. "Now that sounds like a plan," he said, his face showing his wholehearted approval of the idea.

Christmas was lovely; Reg and Len spent the morning quietly together. They were up early to attend the service in the tiny Catholic chapel, and after breakfast they exchanged gifts. They shared the preparation of the Christmas dinner, which they ate quite early, and cleared up together afterwards.
In the afternoon they headed over to Freudesheim to join the Maynard clan. It was riotous there with so many of the family home for the holiday, and Len and Reg were actually quite glad to return to the peace and quiet of their own home that evening. On Boxing Day they entertained Jack and Jo, who also seemed quite glad to have a day of tranquility after a particularly hectic Christmas. Although Len poured scorn on Jo's suggestion that she was getting old, she could not help but think that her mother did look tired and guessed that it was tough looking after such a large party of houseguests over such a busy holiday. She made a point of pampering Jo while she was there, supplying her with tea and making sure that she did not keep getting up to attend to anything.
Reg returned to work the following day, and he would be working every day until New Year's Eve; then he was on the late shift, so he promised to attend the New Year Ball and go on duty direct from there. Once Reg returned to the San, Len continued to work on the dress that she was to wear to the ball. Jo had found one of her old dresses in the attic, made of a beautiful midnight blue satin, and had willingly given it to Len. It was a very old fashioned sort of dress, so Len had painstakingly picked it to pieces and had started to make herself something far more suitable for the ball.
As she worked, Len's thoughts started drifting and she found herself thinking about Benedict Culver. She had been so busy enjoying herself with Reg since dancing with Benedict just before Christmas, and so had not had the opportunity of thinking about how she had felt when she had danced with him. He was attractive, there was no doubt about that; he was handsome and he was good company. He was easy to talk to and amusing, and Len finally allowed herself to admit that she was drawn to him. He could not be compared to Reg, of course, but he was pulchritudinous none the less. Len sighed wistfully and then pushed thoughts of Dr. Culver from her mind. She was Reg's wife, and was happy to be, and that was that.

I discovered pulchritudinous while looking for similies  . It was such a lovely word that I couldn't resist using it!

The New Year Ball at the San was as much a tradition for the residents of the Gornetz Platz as the pre-Christmas party at the Chalet School was, and Len was not the only one looking forward to it. There was always a good turn out, and lots of money was raised for the San by the sale of tickets for the event and for raffle tickets sold at the ball. The folk living on the Platz were all eager to help the San in any way possible; after all, it was very much a part of their lives, with family members either working there or being treated there.
Len had managed to finish her dress and she was delighted with it. It was very simple, but she wore a pearl necklace and earrings with it, and Reg admiringly declared that she looked most elegant. They donned their warmest coats, for it was bitterly cold outside and more snow had fallen only that morning, and Len took a pair of shoes to change in to so that she could wear stout boots to walk in. It was a lovely clear evening, though, and they both enjoyed the walk to the San.
When they arrived the party was in full swing, with lots of people dancing and plenty more standing around in groups, talking and laughing. Len and Reg made their way across the room to join the Maynards. Jack and Jo were both dressed up to the nines, Jack in a dark suit that Len was sure he had worn to her wedding and Jo in an eye-catching lime green dress with a cream trim. Len agreed to Jack's suggestion that she should have a drink and Steve was dispatched to fetch a bottle of wine and some glasses. Len looked around the room, seeing many friends there, all enjoying themselves. As she watched Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson arrive, the people dancing moved and she saw Benedict Culver dancing with Gill. Len was surprised at the way her heart lurched at the sight of him, and she remembered all to well how it had felt to dance with him.
"Len!"
With a shock, Len realised that Reg had been speaking to her, but she had been gazing at Benedict and not notcied. "I'm sorry," she said, tearing her gaze away from Benedict. "What was that?"
"Here's your wine," said Reg, handing her a glass and sitting down next to her.
"Happy New Year," said Jo, holding up her glass and beaming round at her family.
They tapped their glasses against hers, echoing her toast, and Len sipped her wine, her eyes already being drawn back to the dance floor. She could no longer see Benedict, although Gill was now dancing with a slim, fair haired man, who Len knew was one of the surgeons at the San. She forced herself to turn around in her seat and face the table, reminding herself that she did not need to be looking at other men as she had Reg to look at. With such a wonderful and loving husband, how could she even consider gazing at another man?
Reg and Len did some dancing and had some of the food from the delicious buffet. While they were eating, Len saw that Benedict was dancing with Con, and she felt a pang of something suspiciously like jealousy as Con laughed up at her dance partner. Firmly telling herself that she was being wicked, Len dropped her gaze to her plate and concentrated on enjoying the lovely vol-au-vents she had chosen.
"These sausage rolls are delicious," Reg commented as he wiped the crumbs from his fingers. "I think I shall go and get some more." He stood up and heaaded off across to the large buffet tables.
A while later, wondering why Reg had not returned with his sausage rolls, Len glanced across and saw that he was deep in conversation with Eugen Crovoisier and the relaxed look he had worn that evening had gone, to be replaced with what Len mentally called his worried doctor look. Even though she could not hear them, he knew that they were discussing Reg's patients, and she had a shrewd suspicion that Reg would not be staying much longer at the ball.
It did not take long for Len's suspicions to be confirmed. Once he had thanked Dr. Crovoisier for the information, Reg hurried back to the table, sausage rolls evidently forgotten. "I'm really sorry, Len," he said, "but I have to go on duty now. Miss Jenkins is having a dreadful asthma attack and I'm needed."
"There are other doctors," Len pointed out in a low voice. She certainly did not need Jo reminding her that doctors had their own patients and these patients had needs that would be attended to before those of any wives or children of said doctors. "You are going in an hour anyhow."
"You know I have to go now," Reg reminded her a little impatiently. "She needs me."
"Fine." Len swallowed hard to repress all the bitter comments that were struggling to get out.
"See you in the morning," said Reg and he turned on his heel without waiting for Len's response.
She watched as he headed off through the middle of the dancers, obviously so eager to get back to his patient that he had not even got the time to walk around the edge of the dance floor. Aware that she was unnecessarily irritated by his dedication to his job, Len fixed on a smile and joined in the merry conversation of her family. She certainly did not want them to notice how annoyed she was and to take her to task over it; no doubt they would all support Reg in his single-minded dedication to his career and tell her how grateful she should be for being married to such a wonderful doctor. 'The trouble is that I want to be married to the wonderful husband that Reg is and not the wonderful doctor,' Len thought. 'And he is a wonderful husband when I don't have to share him with dozens of other people.'

I don't think Len is being unreasonable here - as she said there are other doctors and they were only going to be staying another hour anyway. What does Reg want? A wife or a job?

And even if this patient is one of his that's no excuse - doesn't he trust his fellow doctors? Eugen Courvoiser has to be his senior yet Reg feels that he has to be there.

Having pretended to be enjoying herself for almost an hour after Reg's departure, Len could stand it no longer. She decided that she would go home and go to bed, hoping that she would feel better about things in the morning when Reg came home. 'If Reg came home' a little voice in her head pointed out. She bade everyone farewell and resisted their entreaties for her to stay, and slipped out of the room. She pulled on her coat and boots and went out of the San, hoping that it was still a lovely evening. She certainly did not fancy walking home in a blizzard. She was not worried about safety; the Platz was a very quiet place and its citizens were, by and large, law abiding. They were free from the troubles of the cities around and although most people did not leave their doors unlocked, they always told everyone that they could.
Len left the San and walked along the drive, her boots scrunching on the snow. She breathed deeply and felt invigorated by the frosty air. As she turned the corner onto the road, Len was sure that she could hear footsteps behind her, so she quickened her pace, not eager for company. It was a lovely peaceful evening and she needed to be able to think in peace so that she could, hopefully, arrive home with a clear head.
As she walked briskly along the road, Len was aware that there was still the sound of someone behind her. The Platz was very safe, and she reassured herself that she was not in any danger. But there was definitely someone following her and Len knew that she had to see who it was. She stopped suddenly and spun round, gasping as she saw who it was.
"You frightened the life out of me!" she told him. "What on earth are you doing?"
"I'm sorry," said Benedict, looking completely unrepentant. "What on earth are you doing walking around on your own at this time of night?"
"Reg's gone on duty," she explained, "so I'm going home."
"On your own?"
"Of course. It's not like London here," she reminded him. "It's perfectly safe. What are you doing wandering around scaring unsuspecting people half to death?"
"I saw you leaving all by yourself and thought someone ought to make sure that you got home safely," Benedict explained. "Isn't it a lovely night? This is why I came out here - to enjoy this sort of weather."
"It is beautiful," Len agreed, walking on again.
Benedict fell into step with her. "It's so different from England, but I'm sure you know that."
"Yes, the greyness and the dampness of England is something else," Len said, recalling how miserable it was to see nothing but overcast skies and rain day after day. "You don't have to see me home, Benedict. I shall be quite safe. You should go back to the ball. It's the event of the year!"
"It's not if you aren't there," he said softly.
"Con's still there," Len told him. "You looked as though you had fun dancing with her."
"I did," he agreed, "But not as much as I would have had with you. Len, I can't stop thinking about you. I want to spend every minute of every day with you, getting to know you better. I know you aren't happy with Reg - it's all right, you don't have to say anything about that - and I can't bear to think of you being miserable."
"I am happy with Reg," she contradicted him firmly.
"You sound as if you are trying to convince yourself of that as much as me," he responded. "And Reg is always at work - even when he's not supposed to be on duty he's there. You must hardly see him. Len, I'm not asking for anything from you, I just have to tell you how I feel."
"Perhaps I don't want to know how you feel," she said curtly. "Go back to the party, Dr. Culver. I will see myself home." She crossed the street and resisted the temptation to look back when the sound of his footsteps stopped. She could hardly believe what he had told her, and she could not help but feel warmed inside by his words. He cared for her and she could so easily feel the same way about him. It would be lovely to spend time with him, taking long walks through the snow or lingering over dinner in a quiet restaurant, talking endlessly to him about anything and everything. But it was wrong. She was Reg's wife and she loved Reg. Whatever Benedict wanted from her she could not give him for that reason.
Len walked resolutely on, half hoping that Benedict would follow her and that she could have just a few minutes more with him. It took every ounce of self control that she possessed to stop herself from looking back, fearing that she would be, like Lot's wife, turned into a pillar of salt if she once looked behind her. As she turned into the street in which she lived, Len allowed her pace to slacken and made a visible effort to relax. She walked up the path and unlocked the front door, remembering the look that had crossed Benedict's handsome face when she had told him that she did not want him to tell her how he felt and almost wishing that she could go back and tell him that she was sorry. It did not feel right to tell someone that she was not interested in their feelings, for she had always been the one who had cared about everyone's feelings. And yet she could not let herself care about his feelings, just in case she discovered that she returned them.

I seem to have lost my bunnies again; if anyone sees them, please send them back!

Len lay in bed tossing and turning, unable to sleep a wink. She replayed the scene with Benedict over and over in her mind, wondering just what he would have said to her if she had not told him to stop. And the worst thing was, now she was safely away from him she was regretting everything so much. She knew that she wanted to hear exactly how he felt and she wanted to tell him that she felt the same. Reg had often sung his praises as a fine doctor, and yet he seemed to have time to have a life as well. He did all the things that she had imagined doing with Reg - spending time with family and friends and appreciating that there was life outside the San. How different her life would be if she was married to Benedict Culver, Len realised. It would be far more satisfying to have someone to share things with, someone who could be relied upon to be around when needed.
Len finally got up and went downstairs, wrapping her dressing gown closely around her for it was chilly. She wondered if she should phone Benedict to apologise for her rudeness and even got as far as lifting the receiver to dial his number before her common sense told her that Reg might wonder why Benedict's number came up on their phone bill at such an odd hour of the night. After that she concentrated on willing Benedict to call her, although she knew that he was unlikely to after the way she had dismissed him earlier. She had made it clear to him that she was not interested and as he was a decent man he would make sure that he kept out of her way as much as possible. With a sigh Len realised that she might not see much more of him and as she began to feel drowsy she gazed into the embers of the fire and began to think of increasingly madcap schemes for seeing Benedict again. As she finally dozed off, Len was in the middle of a wonderful adventure, where she got separated from everyone else when she went skiing and ended up trapped in a herdsman's hut with just the dashing Dr. Culver for company.
When she awoke it was late morning, the fire had gone out and Len felt cold and stiff. She was still sitting in the armchair and she knew that Reg had not come home. If he had returned he would have woken her and made her go upstairs to lie down properly, not left her in the chair all night. Feeling annoyed with him for not even having the decency to phone her and tell her that he would be late home, Len got up and went to have a shower to see if that would make her feel any better.
As she stood beneath the steaming water, she berated herself roundly for allowing herself to indulge in such awful fantasies the previous evening. Just thinking of them made her blush; as if she really wanted to run off with some other man when she had Reg, dear, faithful, loving Reg. She really must have been out of her mind to even have considered calling Benedict and talking to him. Len rubbed herself vigorously with the towel and dressed, before heading down to the kitchen. She had to prepare some lunch for Reg if - 'when' she corrected herself - he came home. It was New Year's Day and her first resolution would be that she would be nicer to her hardworking husband and would not think any more about other handsome doctors.

Well, one bunny has come crawling back; it knows little about medical things, so I hope this isn't too inaccurate. Do feel free to point out any glaring errors, as I'm happy to amend things to make them more realistic. Thank you! :D

After the excitement of New Year's Eve, life quickly returned to normal in the Entwhistle household. The girls were due to return to the Chalet School in the second week of January, and Len found plenty to do in her classroom before the term began. Reg was as busy as ever in the San, with new patients both from Switzerland and from England, too. They managed to have breakfast together a couple of times a week, and even enjoyed a nice meal in Interlaken the weekend before school was due to restart. Len had blocked her converstation with Benedict from her mind, although she did wonder what would happen when Reg decided that it was time to have a few friends around for a meal and then invited Dr. Culver. She was not sure what would happen if she saw him again, and so it was better to make sure she did not think of him at all.
Back in school, Len had most of her planning done and her room all ready for the return of the girls. She enjoyed the feeling of being on top of her work, and liked the new arrangement of desks that she had decided to try; the girls would be able to work in groups much more easily and this would, she hoped, improve their language skills. Eager now to set off home to get Reg some dinner, Len hurried along the corridor that led to the staff staircase. She was already mentally going through the contents of her cupboards and deciding that she would make a lasagne and she did not notice that the carpet at the top of the stairs was loose. As she stepped onto the top stair, Len caught her heel in the carpet and the next thing she knew she was tumbling down the stairs. To stop her headlong fall, she tried to grab at the bannisters, but succeeded in giving her arm a painful wrench. Finally, she fell awkwardly, catching her head on the edge of the bottom stair, and lost consciousness.
She came round just a moment or two later, as Nancy Wilmot and Matey gently moved her so that they could check to see if she had injured herself. She was aware of a sharp pain in her arm and when she saw the odd angle at which it lay, she almost fainted.
"What have I done?" she gasped.
"Broken your arm I would say," Nancy told her drily. "Kathie's calling the San now."
To her everlasting embarrassment, Len was promptly sick at Nancy's feet. Beyond even an apology, she closed her eyes and bit down hard on her bottom lip. She allowed Matey to help her to her feet and with Nancy on one side and Matey on the other, they got her downstairs and parked her on a chair in the entrance. How she managed to sit there without crying, Len never knew, but she would always remember the feeling of relief that accompanied the sight of Reg running into the school, medical bag in hand and an anxious expression on his face. Once he had got her into the ambulance, he made her comfortable and then they sped off to the San.
Lying back on the stretcher, the pain a little more bearable now, Len smiled weakly at her husband. "Can't they put the sirens on?" she suggested. "It would make this worth it then."
"You are hardly an emergency," he reminded her, relieved that she was able to joke with him now. "What on earth were you doing?" he asked, holding her hand in his.
"Thinking about making lasagne for dinner," she answered promptly. "I tripped down the stairs."
"And almost knocked yourself out, too," he said, smoothing her hair back and looking at the lump on her forehead.
"Oh, yes," she said, her cheeks scarlet. "I've just thrown up at Nancy's feet, too. She'll never let me hear the end of it."
Reg patted her hand consolingly. "Here we are now. Lie still, Len, and we'll get you into an examination room."
Len did her best to lie still as they carried her into the San, but every jolt of the stretcher made a pain shoot up her arm and by the time that she was lying on the bed in a little examination room, she was white faced and tense. Reg watched as one of the duty doctors examined Len's arm and arranged for an x-ray, and was not at all surprised when the doctor recommended that Len have surgery to pin the bones back together again. He reassured her that the operation was a simple one and that she would probably only need to be kept in the San overnight, and then he escorted her to surgery and kept her company while the doctor and nurses on duty got her ready for the operation. As the anaesthetic was administered, he promised to wait outside until she came round, and as her eyes closed he sank down onto a handy chair and assured himself that she would be fine, for it was a simple procedure that would not take very long.

Hmmm, can't see it being just an overnight stay if she needed pins, more likely if she did as I did once and smashed the elbow - they'd have to go in and remove bits of bone and file down others, but otherwise no problems. And being sick after being knocked out is very authentic.

I don't think denial of Benedict's existence is really the way forward with this. Len needs to think about how she is going to react when she next has to spend time with him or she might do somehing she will regret. I suppose she will have time to think while she recuperates  .

Len didn't intend to fall; it definitely was a Freudian slip though

Len came round feeling groggy and found Reg at her side just as he had promised. As she recovered from the anaesthetic he remained at her side, holding her good hand and talking quietly to her. He stayed with her until she felt much better and was transferred to one of the small rooms with a lovely view of the mountains, where she would spend the next day or two. He saw that she was comfortably settled and advised her to try to get some sleep, and then he apologetically left her, for he still had his rounds to complete.
Alone, Len looked down at the cast now encasing her left arm. She had been given pain killers and so it only hurt dully, and she wondered just how long she would need to keep the cast on. Presumably she had managed to do fairly severe damage to it, and she would be incapacitated for quite some time. Sighing, Len tried to lie so that her arm was comfortable, but in almost every position she tried, some part of her did not feel able to relax. Finally, though, she did manage to drift off to sleep, and so did not notice Reg peeping into the room several times during the early evening. Later, when he had finished his shift, he came to sit with her, but she was still asleep and he was loath to wake her. After all, sleep was the best healer and in the morning she would feel much better able to deal with being in the San if she had had a good night's sleep first. Eventually, yawning hugely, Reg abandoned his lonely chair at his wife's side and headed home, knowing that he would feel miserable in the chalet all by himself. He liked having Len there, even if she was already asleep when he got in, and it always felt less homely if she had gone away.
The next morning Len woke feeling refreshed and ready for a large breakfast. She was somewhat disappointed with the fare provided by the San, but was assured that she would get a much better meal at lunch time. Not long afterwards a doctor came to check on her and once he had declared himself satisfied with her progress, he assured her that she would probably be released the next day. Len was relieved to hear that, for she did not enjoy being confined to her room in this way, and although it would be awkward trying to manage to do things at home, it would be preferable to spending any longer in the San.
In the middle of the morning, as she was gazing thoughtfully out of the window, an orderly arrived, bearing a huge bouquet of flowers and seasonal greenery. Thanking the orderly, Len took the flowers and looked for a card, but there was none. With a smile at Reg's thoughtfulness, Len arranged the bouquet in a vase that the orderly had brought and then sat down and looked complacently at them. Reg was not so bad after all. He was an incredibly busy man, but he still had time to find flowers to cheer her up.
After lunch Reg himself appeared, beaming happily as he saw that Len was up and about, albeit with her arm encased in a sling. "You are looking much better," he told her. "I'm so sorry I didn't get here this morning - I overslept."
"You look much better for it," she told him. "Thanks for the flowers. They're beautiful."
"Flowers?" Reg looked towards the vase with a puzzled expression. "I haven't sent flowers. I wish I'd thought of it, but I was sleeping."
"Maybe it was mother," said Len. "Anyhow, they're lovely and they really cheered me up this morning."
"I've spoken to Dr. Long," said Reg, "and he says that I can take you home tomorrow afternoon. I'm on duty then, but as soon as I've finished, we'll go. Is that all right?"
"Yes, great," she agreed with enthusiasm. "I can't wait to get out of here."

The following evening, having waited around for what felt like hours, Len began to despair of ever going home. Reg had popped in once or twice to see her, but he had been very busy and there still seemed to be too much for him to attend to for him to have time to take her home. She was fed up with hanging around and was almost tempted to call her father and ask him to take her home. It had been deadly dull being stuck in the San, despite having visitors and her Mother's lovely new book to read; Len could not wait to return to the comfort of her own home and she was starting to feel annoyed with Reg, who knew how eager she was to get home.
Eventually, at almost ten o'clock, a knock at the door of her room heralded the arrival of Dr. Culver. "I'm really sorry," he said before she had the chance to say anything to him. "I didn't want to come, but Reg practically begged me to. He's just had a new patient - a little boy who is really ill - and he can't get away. He asked me to drive you home. I told him that I couldn't, but he wouldn't take no for an answer."
Len was filled with annoyance with the little boy for being sick and with Reg for asking Dr. Culver of all people to drive her home. "I'd rather go home than be stuck here any longer," she said crossly.
"Let me help you with your coat," he said, watching as she struggled to get it around her. "It's bitterly cold outside."
"Thank you," she said, remembering her manners.
"Is that all you have?" he asked, gesturing towards Len's handbag.
"I didn't exactly plan to come and stay here," she snapped at him. "Come on, let's get going."
As Len had already completed the paperwork for her release, all she did was to thank the nurse who had looked after her for everything she had done, and then they were off. Outside, as Benedict had said, it was extremely cold, and a fog had descended over the Platz. Fortunately his car was not far from the entrance to the great hospital, and soon Len was ensconced comfortably in the front seat, a blanket over her knees, and Benedict was climbing into the driver's seat.
He glanced at Len out of the corner of his eye, wishing that she did not look so furious. He had honestly done all he could to avoid giving her a lift home, but Reg had refused to listen to any excuses and so he found himself in this uncomfortable position. Since their last meeting, he had been filled with remorse for the way he had spoken to Len; a couple of drinks and a beautiful moonlit night had been enough to cloud his judgement and he regretted letting her know a little of how he felt about her. Now, not only did he have to deal with feelings he ought not to have for another man's wife, but he also had to cope with the knowledge that he had made such a huge faux pas that he was effectively banned from seeing the object of his affections forever more.
He pulled out of the San car park and turned off in the direction of Len's home. It was not very far to go, even choosing to take the longer way round by the main road rather than going along smaller and so potentially more snowy streets. He crawled along, hardly able to see in front of him, until suddenly a large shape loomed up out of the mist.
"Watch out!" Len yelled from beside him. "It's a cow!"
Benedict turned rather too quickly to avoid the shape, which was indeed a cow, standing in the middle of the road, a rather bemused expression on its face. The car skidded and then plummeted into the ditch beside the road, scrunching to a halt in the middle of an enormous snow drift.

Benedict cursed as he banged his head against the steering wheel, then he apologised profusely for using such language in front of Len.
"That's all right," she said with a nervous giggle. "Are you hurt?"
"No," he assured her, switching on the light inside the car. "You?"
"I don't think so," she replied. "I'm not going to offer to push you out of the ditch, though, Benedict."
"I wouldn't expect you to," he answered promptly. "Wait there and I'll see what's happened." He turned his attention to the car door, but however much he pushed against it, he could not open it at all. The window was covered with snow, as was the windscreen, so he looked across at Len's door. "Can you open it?" he inquired, keeping his voice steady so as not to alarm her.
Len awkwardly reached for the door handle, but could not open the door more than an inch or two. Leaning across her, Benedict shoved as hard as he was able in such a confined space, but they seemed to be well and truly trapped in the car. After an inelegant scramble into the back of the vehicle, Benedict soon ascertained that he could not open the back doors far enough to do more than get his arm out and let lots of bitterly cold air in, so he closed the door up and said, "I don't think we're going to be getting out just yet. The doors won't open more than a couple of inches and we seem to be quite well buried in the snow."
"Then we're going to be here for quite some time," Len predicted with a shiver. "It's never very busy on the Platz at night."
"I shall leave the lights on so that if anyone does pass by, they will notice us," Benedict said. "And luckily I have a couple more blankets here, so you can come and lie out here on the back seat and keep warm. There's no need for us both to keep a vigil all night long." Even as he spoke, Benedict was scrambling back into the driver's seat. "Can you manage to clamber into the back?" he asked, glancing at her heavily plastered arm.
"Not with any dignity," she told him. "I'll be all right here. You make yourself comfortable."
"Lie your seat back, then," he said. "That's right. Now, put this under your head and you'll be able to sleep a little."
"I can't sleep," she told him, lying back anyhow.
Benedict reclined his own seat and resisted the temptation to look across at her. He felt very worried about them spending the night in the car; he had left the engine running so that the heater could stay on, but he knew that he only had about a quarter of a tank of petrol and that would not be enough to keep the car running all night. Unless someone came along the road and saw them, they were in for a very chilly time.
"How's your arm?" he asked.
"It's aching," she replied, looking across at him and trying not to think how handsome he was in profile.
"It was a nasty break," he told her. "But it will be as good as new in about six weeks."
"Did you do the surgery?" she asked, belatedly recalling that he was the orthopedic surgeon.
"Yes," he replied, trying not to remember the shock he had got on discovering that she was to be his patient.
"Thank you," she said softly. "Benedict, I'm really sorry."
"You have nothing to be sorry about," he assured her, still managing not to look over at her. "I'm the one who should apologise. I was well out of line and I'm really sorry."
Recalling the long wait she had had in the San, and how Reg had, once again, decided to put his work ahead of her, Len sighed. "It's awful," she said, her voice now so low that he could scarcely hear her. "He never has time for me. He's always at work, or thinking about work."
"He was worried about you this evening," Benedict assured her. "He really wanted to take you home himself."
"No, he didn't," she said bitterly. "If he'd really wanted to, he would have left the new patients to someone else. He's not the only brilliant doctor there. I'm sick of playing second fiddle all the time, Benedict. All I want is to feel that I'm important to him. Is that too much to ask?"
"You are important to him." Benedict finally gave in to temptation and looked over at her. A tear was sliding down her cheek and he fumbled for his handkerchief. He pressed it into her hand, wishing that there was something he could say to make her feel better.
Len wiped her eyes, but it did not stop more tears from running down her face, and soon she was sobbing uncontrollably into his handkerchief.

Phew! I think he's a nice guy (well, he's bound to be, he's a Culver!) who had the misfortune to fall for the wrong girl.

"Please don't cry," Benedict said, reaching out and awkwardly patting Len's shoulder. "You should try to get some sleep. It's the best thing for you."
Len sniffed. "I'm starting to think that there are plenty of other things that would be better for me," she said enigmatically.
"We're probably in for a long, cold night," he told her calmly. "You have just come out of hospital after an operation. Any problems that you have can easily wait until tomorrow, because there's nothing you can do about them now."
"I'm sorry," she said, getting a grip on herself at last. She looked across at him, violet eyes meeting grey. "I'm not usually such a spineless jellyfish."
"I know," he told her, gazing into her eyes as if mesmerised by her.
Len drew a deep breath and imagined Reg hard at work in the San, completely unaware of her predicament and obviously caring more about his patients than he ever would about her. He probably did not even remember her at all, she realised. He could be at work for hours, all night perhaps, and even though she would find it difficult to manage everything at home now, he would not have considered spending time at home to help her. Nothing would change and she knew that she could not spend the rest of her life feeling bitter and miserable. But once she had voiced the thoughts that were now leaping around in her mind there could be no going back.
"The last time we met," she began, her voice soft, "you wanted to tell me something. I let you think I didn't want to hear it."
"Len," he said warningly. "I know I was in the wrong and I've already apologised for that."
"I don't want you to apologise," she told him, regarding him earnestly. "I wasn't ready to listen to you then. Now I am."
Benedict ruthlessly squashed every little grain of hope sprouting within him. "No," he told her firmly.
Len reached out her good hand and gently touched his cheek. "I can't go on like this any longer," she said seriously. "I want more from life than what Reg is prepared to give me."
Benedict took her hand away from his face. "You don't mean that," he said trying to sound natural. "Len..." But at that point the engine suddenly cut out, and they were plunged into complete silence.
"Have you changed your mind?" she asked, and she leaned over him, her face inches from his.
"No," he heard himself say, although he was not sure whether he was telling her that he had not changed his mind or whether he was trying to stop her from doing something they would both probably regret.
"I think we should sit together in the back," she told him, her tones suddenly pragmatic. "We will be warmer if we are closer together and then we can share the blankets, too."
Although he knew that she was correct, Benedict was not sure how he would stand up to her if she was so close to him.
Seeing the look on his face, Len gave him a wicked grin and asked, "Are you worried that I'll make a pass at you? Will you agree to sit with me if I promise to behave myself? We really ought to stay as warm as we can, you know."
"I know. All right. Can you manage to climb into the back?" Benedict held the blankets while Len scrambled into the back of the car, kicking him in the shoulder as she did so.
"Sorry," she told him, flopping down on the back seat.
Benedict follwed her into the back of the car and helped her to draw the blankets right up around them both. She pulled his arm around her shoulders and snuggled right up to him, and he made a last desperate effort to cling onto his resolution to keep a safe distance from her, metaphorically at least. Warm and comfortable, Len found herself feeling sleepy, so although she had wanted to see if Benedict felt the same about her as he had intimated on New Year's Eve, she found herself falling asleep with her head against his shoulder.

Although I feel sorry for Reg, he has got no one to blame here but himself. I think Len needs to talk to him about how she is feeling because it is probably best in the long term for everyone if she is open about how she feels.
I like Benedict and believe he is a gentleman and wants the best for Len.

Across the Platz, Reg finished work and went wearily out to his car. He took the short route home, driving slowly and carefully, little knowing that his wife was sitting under a snowdrift just a few hundred metres from where he was. He got home safely, parked the car and went into the chalet, eager now to clamber into bed and go to sleep. He decided to forego his usual cup of cocoa and instead went straight upstairs. Everything was in darkness, which surprised him, for Len usually left on the landing light to help him find his way to bed, but he managed to don his pyjamas and have a cursory wash without disturbing Len.
He got carefully into bed and reached out a hand, not wanting to wake her, just to savour the feeling of her at his side again, and was shocked into wakefulness to find the bed empty.
"Len?" he called, turning on the light just to check that the bed really was empty. He leaped out of bed and hurried downstairs, but did not find Len there, so he went more slowly back upstairs, wondering if she had decided to spend the night in the spare room. She might have been worried about disturbing him because of the ungainly cast on her arm; in fact, it would be just like her to be so considerate of his feelings. Unsettled and eager to see her, Reg could not go back to bed without checking, so he opened the door of the spare room and peered into the darkness. Flicking on the light and hoping it would not disturb her, Reg was met with the sight of an empty bed. Seriously worried now, he leaped down the stairs two at a time and seized the little book in which he and Len wrote all the telephone numbers of their friends. He dialled Benedict's number, but the phone rang and rang and no one answered.
Reg sat down and told himself that he had to think sensibly. Benedict and Len had left the San a couple of hours previously and Len definitely should be home by now, yet she was not. There was no answer from Benedict's place either. As he told himself that it was unlikely that anything had happened to them, Reg suddenly wondered if they had deliberately gone somewhere together. He knew that Len was a most attractive woman and Benedict was both handsome and pleasant. Perhaps she had decided that she preferred Benedict to himself and had gone off with him. Reg reminded himself that Len loved him and that they had been very happy throughout their marriage, but a small voice in his head persisted with its suggestions about Len and Benedict. And sitting alone, without any idea of where Len could be, it was all too easy to listen to that little voice.
Trying not to think of Len sitting across a candlelit dinner table from Benedict, Reg thought of his recently completed journey home. There had been thick fog and the roads were icy, but there had been no sign of any accident. Then again, he had been concentrating on getting safely home and not on looking around him for signs of accidents. Decisively Reg got up and pulled on his overcoat and went out to the car again. He could not sit at home and wonder about Len, he had to go and look for her.
He drove the longer way back to the San, passing the now dark car in the ditch without seeing it, and then drove back home again, being as vigilant as the dreadful weather allowed him to be. Having not seen any sign of Benedict's car, he drove over to Benedict's house, where he discovered that there was a light in the downstairs window. He knew he shouldn't but he could not stop himself from getting out of his car and crossing the snowcovered lawn until he stood outside the window. There was a gap in the curtains and he peered in, but could only see a small slice of the room. He could not see anyone there, but that was not to say the room was empty. Hating himself for his suspicions, but unable to banish them and go home, Reg moved on around the chalet, trying to look in each window he passed. Finally, still unable to prove conclusively whether Len was there or not, he realised how ridiculous he must look in his pyjamas and overcoat and he went back to his car. With a heavy heart he drove home, as confused about what had happened to Len as he had been before he had set out to find her.

As far as Reg can see, there's been no accident; what else could have happened to them on the short distance to the San? Thanks for all your comments; I'm now out of written parts, so do feel free to sway my ideas about what happens next!

Len awoke to discover that the lights in the car had gone out and that she felt decidedly chilly. Benedict was sound asleep beside her, his breathing deep and even, and just thinking about him made her heart give a rather odd lurch. She remembered feeling like that about Reg many years ago, and it felt odd to feel the same about someone other than him. 'Can it be so wrong to want to be with someone who will care about me enough to want to spend time with me?' she wondered, pulling the blankets more closely around them. 'Reg is so devoted to his work that he has no time for me. I love my job too, but not to the exclusion of everything else.'
Len was well rested following her short stay in the San, and she just could not make herself fall asleep again. In the end, fed up with staying still and quiet, she poked Benedict and woke him.
"Where am I?" he asked, evidently still half asleep.
"Stuck in a snowdrift," she reminded him and he could hear the smile in her voice.
"What's the time?"
"I don't know. It's still dark, though."
Benedict eased his arm out from behind her head and looked at the luminous face of his watch. "Just after six," he informed her. "It'll get light soon and then someone will come and rescue us."
"And not a minute too soon," she said fervently.
"Absolutely," he agreed. "I need a hearty breakfast and a warm bath wouldn't come amiss either."
"And then when will I see you again?" she asked.
"I'm not sure this is a good idea," he told her.
"Well, if you've changed your mind..." Len let her voice trail off.
After a long silence, he said, "I haven't." He replaced his arm around her shoulders and held her closely against him.
She slid her good arm around him and rested her head against his chest, deliberately blocking out all thoughts of Reg. Benedict cared for her and she cared for him and that was all that mattered. They sat in a comfortable silence for a long time and it gradually grew light outside the car. Suddenly they heard a horn blowing and then someone was tapping on the back window of the car. Turning round, they discovered that it was Phil Graves, evidently just on his way home after work.
Before long, Phil had found a rope in his landrover and attached it to the back of Benedict's car. He then managed to tow the car far enough out of the ditch for its occupants to get out and move around rather stiffly, thanking him profusely for his timely arrival. Next on the scene was Jack Maynard, who was heading to the San earlier than usual in the hope of getting five minutes peace in which to tackle some of his mountain of paperwork. Leaving Benedict and Phil to sort out Benedict's car, he insisted on driving Len back home.

"And so you should see Len goes straight to bed with some warm milk," Jack wound up, having told Reg the story while Len herself was upstairs having a much needed warm bath. Once Reg had agreed, Jack headed off to work and Reg went to prepare the warm milk. Len, emerging from the bath, looked suspiciously at the mug Reg presented her.
"Has my father been speaking to you?" she asked.
"Yes," said Reg. "But it's all right, this is only milk."
Len took the mug with a grimace, and obediently downed the milk.
Reg looked pleased. "Now you go to bed and I'll see about the lunch," he said, taking her arm and leading her towards the bedroom. "I don't have to go to work until this evening."
"Oh, don't stay here on my account," she replied, deciding that she would rather spend the day quietly by herself than with him when he was so obviously feeling guilty for abandoning her the previous evening. "There must be dozens of patients who need your undivided attention."
"I'm sorry about last night," Reg told her. "I know it was all my fault."
"It's all your fault," she told him and then she turned away and went into their bedroom, closing the door behind her with a bang that told him he definitely should not follow her.
Knowing that she was right, Reg went downstairs and began to poke around in the kitchen cupboards and the fridge, wondering what he could make for their lunch. He put on a load of washing and even dusted the living room as an apology for his neglect the previous evening, then he set about making cottage pie for their lunch.
Once he had the pie in the oven, he turned his attention back to the washing machine, which had just finished its cycle. He opened the door and started to take out the washing ready to hang it over the clothes airer and as he pulled it out he discovered that he had managed to put Len's new red shirt in with all the white clothes and that he was now the proud owner of three sets of delicately pink underclothes, and a blotchily pink coat to wear to work. Groaning, he looked through the rest of the washing, knowing that Len would have plenty to say if he had ruined any of her clothes, and then went to hang up the washing. He hoped that Len would know how to return his clothes to their normal colour, for it would be decidedly embarrassing to turn up for work wearing a pink coat.
When Len appeared a couple of hours later, she looked in horror at her clothes horse. "What on earth have you done?" she demanded.
"I was trying to help," he told her. "I'm really sorry."
"Well, it looks as if it's mainly your stuff you've ruined," Len told him unsympathetically.
"Can't you do something about it?" he asked, his expression hopeful.
"What, with this?" she replied, gesturing towards her cast. "No, I'm afraid I can't."
"Then what should I do?" he wondered, giving her a look that would once have melted her heart. Now, though, all she could think of was packing him off to work so that she could be on her own.
"You could try bleach," she suggested, heading into the kitchen to rescue the lunch, which had just started to turn rather too dark a brown. Knowing that he had done these things with good intentions, she bit back a comment about his cooking skills, and served the meal instead.
Reg did his best to chat amiably throughout the meal. He was feeling guilty for having such thoughts about Len and for not discovering Benedict's car when he had driven so nearby the previous night. He knew that Len was annoyed about something, though, for her replies had an edge to them that only appeared when she was angry. Finally, once they had finished eating, Reg made tea and sent Len into the living room to relax while he cleared up in the kitchen. Once everything was as neat and clean as Len liked it to be, he took his own tea, now almost cold, into the sitting room.
"Is something the matter?" he asked, sinking into the armchair opposite hers.

In Reg's defense, he went out in bad weather, looked as best he could and then checked out Benedict's house. He couldn't have alerted anyone to help him find Len if she had been with Benedict without making himself look like a jealous husband. And I imagined that Len would have taken a couple of painkillers when she left the San and maybe in the night. Anyhow, thanks for all your comments, which really get me thinking. Goodness only knows what Reg and Len are going to say to one another now!

That's a pity - I hoped you knew, and were going to tell us sooner rather than later. I hope they can manage to sort things out now they have a chance to talk. At least Reg has finally realised that something is wrong. I don't think Len will give up on her marriage without a fight, however attracted to Benedict she is. Benedict deserves a lot of the blame because he should never have spoken to Len the way he did in the first place. Actually Reg doesn't have much of a defence here - so he couldn't find her and thought she was at Benedict's place? He arrived home late in the evening, leaving well after Len and Benedict, Len was not at home and there was no sign of her. Knocking at benedict's house would not have made him look a jealous husband it would have made him look a concerned husband.

Instead, after faffing about outside he goes back to bed without knowing that Len is alright and without raising the alarm.

If I were Len I'd be furious - and no amount of him doing a little bit of housework would make me feel better. And then, to cap it all, his question to her 'Is something the matter?'

Well no, Reg, only that you obviously don't care enough about me to find out why I didn't arrive home - nothing major!

Len looked thoughtfully at Reg, remembering how she had loved him so much and how she had felt that her whole world centred on him. Had that changed she wondered. And if it had, could she imagine her whole world centering on Benedict Culver now? Suddenly, with distance between them, she was gripped by doubts. He was charming, and he seemed to have put some sort of spell on her. When she was with him she could think of no one but him and yet when she was away from him she could shake off his influence and look more objectively at everything. She had been married to Reg for five years and they had had some happy times. There had been times when she had been angry or upset with him because of his commitment to the San, but she had never actually confronted him over this. She had hoped that he would read her mind; she thought that he would see she was irritated and know the reason for her annoyance without being told.
"I was buried overnight in a car and you don't even seem to have been worried about me," she told him, her gaze meeting his.
"I sat up all night wondering what had happened to you," he answered defensively. "I went out looking for you, but there was no sign of you. The weather was dreadful and I could hardly see a hand in front of me. I even went to Benedict's house to see if you were there."
"And obviously you didn't find me there," she pointed out. "So where else did you think I could have been? Heading off to warmer climes for a holiday?"
"I didn't know where you could be," he told her. "I had planned to go out again and look for you, but I must have fallen asleep around dawn. Your father woke me with his vigorous hammering on the door."
"And why would you think I'd have gone to Benedict's house at that time of night?" Len wondered, a tad guiltily.
Reg knew that he was walking on dangerous ground, but he felt that there were things they had to talk about. He was not exactly sure what they might be, but he needed to find out and to discuss them with Len. She seemed to have drifted away from him somehow, and until this moment he had not noticed. Now he knew that getting her back was the most important thing in the world, and he would only be able to do that if he was honest with her. "I asked Benedict to take you home," he reminded her. "Where else would you have gone at that time of night in such dreadful weather?"
Len sat back in her chair and closed her eyes. Should she tell Reg about all of her resentments and ask Reg if they could have another go at making their marriage work, or should she just brush his suspicions aside and carry on as they had been doing. Or should she admit that Reg's suspicions had not been too far wide of the mark, and tell him that she was seriously considering leaving him for Benedict?

Reg watched Len, realising that he could not even begin to guess what she was thinking. Had they really grown so far apart he wondered sadly. He had thought that they were very close, but it was now blatantly obvious that they weren't. And yet he yearned for the return of that closeness, he ached to go back to the early days of their marriage when they had talked and laughed and shared everything. He had been happy then and thought that she had, too, yet now she most definitely was not happy and he was not sure he knew the right words to use to get her to share her feelings with him.
"I'm sorry I didn't try harder to find you," he said at last. "And I'm really sorry about the washing. I seem to have been every kind of fool."
Len opened her eyes. "I can't go on like this any longer," she told him. "I had such high hopes when we got married and it's nothing like that now."
"What's gone wrong?" he asked. "If it's something I've done I'd like to know. I want to put things right again if I can."
"There are two things wrong," she told him slowly. "But how am I to know that it will make things better if we talk about them? Maybe it will make things worse."
"Can things be worse than they appear to be now?" he asked gently.
Thinking of Benedict, Len gave a wry smile. Yes, they definitely could be worse for Reg, but would that be better for her? And she definitely needed things to be better for her, even if they got worse for Reg. It was high time she thought of her own happiness, and stopped worrying about what would make everyone else happy.
"I don't like playing second fiddle to the San," said Len, unable to dress up her grievance. And perhaps it was better to tell Reg exactly how she felt so that he would not be able to claim that he did not know what the problem was. "I can't go on like this, Reg. All you do is work, even when you aren't supposed to work. I feel as if you no longer want to be with me."
"That's not true," he said fervently. "The bit about me not wanting to be with you. I wish I could spend more time with you."
"Then why don't you?" she asked, knowing from the passion in his voice that he really meant what he was saying.
"When I first came to the Platz," he said slowly, "I was your father's protégé. I felt that I had so much to prove and all I wanted was to be like him. He worked such long hours and I felt that I had to do the same. And I worked like that for years, so when I married you it was very difficult to tell the rest of the staff not to call me in or ask me to take on extra patients. Everyone just assumed that I'd come in whenever they called and do all sorts of extra things because that was what I had always done."
"So you're telling me that I shall just have to put up with this work obsession of yours," Len said standing up. "Well, let me tell you that I can't put up with it any longer."
Reg leapt to his feet, but he was too late. Len had hurried back upstairs and he heard the bedroom door bang behind her again.

Well Len has told Reg how she feels about his workaholic tendencies. The ball is now in his court, he is going to have to make some changes and quickly if he wants to keep Len.

Thank You Fatima

So you're telling me that I shall just have to put up with this work obsession of yours," Len said standing up. "Well, let me tell you that I can't put up with it any longer."
Reg leapt to his feet, but he was too late. Len had hurried back upstairs and he heard the bedroom door bang behind her again.

Stop assuming things, Len, and let Reg finish. Maybe things will change or maybe they won't but you won't know if you run away just after the conversation's started. Or is it that you really don't want to give Reg a chance so you can go after a relationship with Benedict?

Len has relised, I thnk, that she has to sort herself out as much as they have to sort out their marriage.

I think its such an emotional topic for Len that I would be surprised if she is able to do the conversation all in one go. I think its realistic in something this big that there would be lots of smaller conversations where she finds she's too emotional or upset to go on with it and would rather continue feeling and being a little calmer

Glad they've got that out in the open, hopefully when Len has calmed down they will be able to talk about it and sort things out.

Thanks Fatima.

That actually makes a lot of sense on Reg's part, and I hope once Len has calmed down from her flounce that they can continue the talk and that Reg sees he'll just HAVE to put his foot down. I can't imagine anyone, least of all jack, being happy if he realised the sacrifices Reg is making.

*hopes Len doesn't do anything stupid*

This drabble drives me crazy! Half the time I want to smack Reg and the other half I could hug him! I supected that was the reason he worked such mad hours, but I agree that if he hasn't proved himself by now there's probably no point trying any longer. I bet Joey could tell Len a thing or two about where she and Jack went wrong, and how she'd do things differntly now! Give Reg a break Len (even if you don't think he desreves it!) and get the air really cleared, then you can make some reasonable decisions about the future.

Thanks for all your comments. Here's a little more, but my bunnies seem to have gone off on a Christmas holiday and not returned yet.

Later that afternoon there was a call from the San, but Reg, mindful of Len's words, told them that he was due in to work at eight and would deal with whatever he had to then. His wife needed looking after, and so he would stay at home with her for as long as he could. He heard the surprise in the voice of the Matron at the other end of the line, but she agreed that one of the other doctors would be able to see to the patient in question and rang off. Reg grinned to himself, glad that one of his first refusals to come early to work had gone so well. Now all he needed to do was refuse a few more times, and perhaps they would get the message. He would then be able to do just what the other doctors at the San did - go home when he had finished his shift and forget about work until his next shift began.
He pottered around in the living room, tidying up (although there was not much to do, for Len was a very good housekeeper) and throwing out some old newspapers that were cluttering up the coffee table. He then checked the washing and ironed those garments that were not too pink to wear, taking great care not to burn anything so that Len would see that he really did wish to help her out. After that he made some sandwiches and a pot of tea and then sliced some cake, before putting it all on a tray and carrying it upstairs for Len's tea. He found her sitting up in bed reading a book, but she scarcely looked up as he came in and he realised that he had a lot of work to do to get her to believe that he really did want to be with her.
Len accepted a cup of tea and a sandwich, and pretended to be absorbed in her book once more. She had been thinking hard, trying to decide which future seemed more appealing - one with Reg or one with Benedict. She knew that was the issue she had to resolve before she did anything else, but it was proving impossible to make up her mind. She had loved Reg for so long that it would be strange to turn and find someone else at her side, yet after being thrown into Benedict's company the previous night she could imagine that she would soon get used to finding him standing next to her.
After tea, Reg apologetically got ready to go to the San. "Is there anything else you'd like me to do before I go to work?" he asked, trying not to notice the look she gave him as he said the word 'work'.
"I shall be fine, thank you," she said with dignity. "Goodbye."
Without waiting to for his response, Len buried herself in her book again until she had heard him start up the car and drive off down the street. Once he had gone she got up and went downstairs, seeking a glass of water and her painkillers. After taking two, she decided to watch television for a while, for she was too wound up to go to bed. It would do her good to sit in front of some light entertainment and to see if she could take a break from the question currently spinning round in her mind - Reg or Benedict?

I think it will take time for Len to forgive Reg for not being there all the previous times. If she does decide to ditch Reg she really should spend some time alone before leaping into another relationship

I agree. At least Reg is aware there's a problem and trying to do something about it - even if it's a bit of a disaster initially! He has to start somewhere!

And you're not exactly perfect yourself, Len! Ask your Dad how he felt about working such awful hours - I bet he hated it!

Have just caught up with this again, yay :D Thank you for writing it Becky.

Frankly, I think Len needs time out from ALL men at the moment. It's not healthy for her to stay with Reg right now, but neither is it ideal to swing right in to Benedict's arms and a whole new life there. She needs space to think and breathe, and maybe after that she'll enjoy whatever decision she makes.

Agree completely with Roisin here - it's all very well thinking that life would be better with Benedict, but think how humiliated Reg would be, having to work with him... It does sound as though she needs some time alone to think and ponder, without distractions!

May we have some more please, Fatima?
