A bunny bit again whilst reading the thread about Grizel's parents on the 'Anything Else' board, so I dug out the first few paragraphs of this again:

Grizel Cochrane stood looking down towards the Tiern See – the most beautiful of the Austrian lakes, tears brimming in her eyes. She had a boyish hatred of tears, and she dashed them away hastily. Breathing a heavy sigh, she turned her head away from the vista and started to stride out towards the far end of the Sonnalpe. A strenuous walk would help her to think, and enable her to get her emotions under firm control once more.

She thought back to the mornings exchange with the Robin. She felt bitterly ashamed of how she had spoken to the younger girl, but the news she had imparted had shocked her to sharpness.

Joey – engaged!! It seemed the most preposterous of ideas! Grizel had known for some time Jack Maynard’s feelings on the subject, yet Grizel felt that Joey would never reciprocate, and Jack himself would move on. He was such a energetic and lively man that a one-sided relationship that would never come to fruition was unlikely to satisfy him forever. It would have been only a matter of time before….

She cut off her thoughts in that direction immediately. Jack belonged to Jo now. Her secret hopes and dreams had been dashed.

Poor Grizel; I must admit that I'd never thought about her having feelings for Jack until it was mentioned on that thread, but now it seems very logical. Thanks, Richenda.

Thanks Richenda! I was just re-reading exile last night and read that scene with Grizel and the Robin, this fits in perfectly...any more to come?? Did Jack suspect I wonder? Did Jo? :D

Oh good, I am interested in how this will play out. Poor Grizel. I suppose it wasn't the thing at that time to show your own interest in a man :( and even if it was, would she have had the courage?

poor poor grizel! :(
so squashed by this time, first by her stepmother and then the need to be a good schoolgirl - lets be honest, the CS was quite restrictive - that its almost as if she can't even admit to herself what she wants until she sees its been taken from her......

Thanks everyone. A teensy bit more - it's likely to be a slowburner this one!

Grizel’s attention was caught by a small figure running towards her. She gave a smile and caught up small Natalie Mensch in her arms. Her mother, Gisela soon followed, and bestowed on Grizel a broad smile. “Natalie saw you Grizel, and insisted on coming to greet you” she added in her soft voice, smiling down at her small daughter. “Now Blumchen, you go on ahead, while Tante Grizel and I follow”. Natalie danced off, leaving her Mother to walk at a more sedate pace with her friend.

“Isn’t it wonderful that Jo has finally seen Jack for what he’s worth?” The first Head Girl of the Chalet School asked. “She has rebelled against growing up for so long and yet I always thought she would make a wonderful wife and mother.” Grizel said nothing. She pressed her lips together tightly and dug her fingernails into her palms – she was terrified that if she opened her mouth to speak to the understanding Gisela everything would come tumbling out – her hopes, dreams, the meaning she had attached to the times she had spent with Jack on the Platz whilst Jo had still been at school.

It's a shame she is stopping herself - if she let it out then she might feel better - I'm sure Gisela would be a great listener!

Thanks, Richenda

Brilliant, thank you. Will we hear about all the times on the Sonnalpe that she was spending time with him? I know we get to hear about how he used to walk Rufus a lot while Jo was down in school - maybe she volunteered too?

I always felt a lot of her meaness and lashing out was a way of hiding her deeper feelings - be rotten to people and push them away, and they'll never guess how much you are hurting inside.

Great story...
Caroline.

Thanks Richenda, this is really great. I'm sure Gisela would be very sympathetic if only Grizel could tell her what was wrong.
