Post subject:  Where were the staff when Carola needed them?

Rosalie Dene burst into the Heads' Study with little or no ceremony, looking white and shaking. It was late evening, and the school was sound asleep. Some of the staff, including Hilda Annersley, Rosalie, Hilary Burn and Matey, had gone for a short walk in the fresh air some time before. Biddy O'Ryan had begged off, being very tired and preferring to have an early night. It was early Spring, and the rain that had been falling relentlessly all day had stopped, and a young moon was riding high in the sky, illuminating the grounds with a silvery light. Now Rosalie had returned, and was pouring out a most peculiar tale into the stupefied ears of Nell Wilson.

"We were down by the form gardens," she gasped. "The moon's pretty bright, and we could see everything clearly. We were just strolling along when Hilary heard footsteps coming towards us. Then we all heard them; they were striding with military precision - like a soldier, you know."

Nell nodded, getting a clear mental picture of the scene.

"When we saw the figure I don't think any of us quite believed what we were seeing. It was a man - at least I assume so. He was dressed in some sort of armour, including a helmet that seemed to cover one of his eyes. When he reached us, he stopped and looked at us for a moment. Then he spoke to us, and what he said didn't make any sense at all."

Rosalie stopped for a moment to catch her breath, and Nell felt like throttling her.

"He said 'Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.'"

"What?" said Nell. "What was that supposed to mean?"

"I don't know, but he grabbed Hilda and dragged her off. I don't know if he realised that she was the Head, or whether he went for her because she was nearest, but they've both disappeared. We tried to follow them, but they went round some bushes, there was a funny humming sound, and when we got there they'd gone."

Nell got up from her chair and moved towards the door. "Show me," she said as she went out.

Rosalie hurried after her, and arrived in the gardens even more breathless than before. Hilary and Matey were standing irresolute, looking about them. Even Matey seemed stunned by what had happened. Just as Nell and Rosalie came up to them, columns of shining light suddenly appeared, which coalesced into three men in strange uniforms. One was slight and nearly bald, one was tall, well-built with dark hair, and the third was... the strangest person Nell had ever seen. He had a mass of long hair hanging down his back, and a silver chain sash across his chest. But the strangest thing about his appearance was his forehead, which was heavily ridged.

The bald man - the leader the women assumed - stepped forward.

"Do not be alarmed," he said. "I am Jean-Luc Picard, and my companions are William Riker and Worf. I understand that some of you have met the Borg."

"Is that who took Hilda Annersley?" asked Matey.

"You have lost someone to them? Then I'm afraid you must accept that they have gone forever. The Borg don't generally give anybody up, especially once they have been assimilated." Nell's eagle eye noted a slight shudder as he said this, as if he spoke from personal experience. "We will do our best to restore your colleague to you, but their ship is virtually impossible to disable."

"Ship?" asked Hilary faintly.

"Spaceship," said Riker. "They are aliens, and have a nasty habit of taking over civilisations that they come across. So far we have managed to stop them from taking over Earth."

"So are you aliens to?" asked Nell, looking at Worf.

"Some of us. But I'm from France, and Will's from Alaska. Worf is a Klingon. If we are going to have any chance at all of rescuing your colleague one of you will have to come with us to identify her. Stand beside us, and we'll beam you up to our ship."

"I will," said Nell, stepping forward. But Matey put out her hand to stop her.

"I'm sorry Nell, but with Hilda gone we cannot do without you here. You are the only Head we have left."

"I'll go," said Hilary, though she was white faced and shaking. "I can be best spared from any of us here."

She stepped forward, and at a signal from Captain Picard took her place with the three men. Picard tapped the badge on his chest.

"Four to beam up," he said.

Nell Wilson and Matey watched as lights surrounded the group. When they had gone, so had the four people, including Hilary Graves.

Now Hilda against the Borg would be a mighty battle!

Hmmm, I might be feeling sorry for the Borg! :D
I must admit, it hadn't occurred to me that this might be the reason for the staff's absence that night.
Thanks Pat.

*g* Excellent, Pat.

But of course that's where all the staff were, they were being assimilated! Are you going to run with it or may we all chip in?

(I'd quite like to mix in a little VOY myself...)

Oh woo and yay, this is giving me so much geeky pleasure already :D

Picard is indeed French... though after a random interjection of "merde!" in Encounter at Farpoint, I don't think this is ever referred to again in TNG...

Now Picard should listen to this advice...

Hilary stared around her as she materialised on the Enterprise. She was standing on a platform with Picard Riker and Worf standing close to her. She followed them as they stepped down and headed for a door opposite. A short walk took them to what looked like some sort of lift, and before long she found herself seated in what she was told was 'the Captain's Ready Room'. It looked more like a very comfortable office to her, with a desk to one side and easy chairs arranged in a little group behind the door. Models of what she supposed were spacecraft decorated one wall. A machine dispensed a cup of coffee that was as good as any she'd ever had, and she was somewhat reassured when the Captain asked for Earl Grey tea, even though he did seem to be talking to the machine. Once they were all settled, Picard called the meeting to order. A picture appeared on the wall, much to Hilary's surprise, though thinking about it later she realsied that it had to be something like the televisions that had just started to appear in the great London shops. The picture showed what looked like a metal box spinning in space.

"That is the Borg ship," explained Picard. "The Borg are what is known as a collective, that is they are a group of beings that work together. However, in the case of the Borg, they also have a 'hive mind'. That is they think as one being rather than a group of individuals. In fact they do not see themselves as an individual, but as Borg. They will almost certainly have started assimilating your Head, but that is something that can be reversed. Dr Crusher, our Medical Officer, has had experience of doing just that. We can beam over to the ship, and walk around inside in reasonable safety until we interfere with their concerns. And rescuing your Head will certainly come into that category. We need you to come over with us to help with the rescue. Your Head will know you, even if assimilation has started, and your presence will reassure her."

"We will be taking weapons with us," put in Worf. His voice was deep and rich, and in some way comforting, possibly due to the air of confidence he exuded. "Not that we will use them unless we must, as the Borg can adapt their defences very quickly."

By this time Hilary was at the stage of just accepting whatever anyone said withut trying to understand what was going on. It was all so far outside her experience that all she could do was let it all wash over her, and to think about it later. Before she knew it they were all back down at the Transporter Room (where they'd arrived on the ship), and the weird lights had enveloped her again. This time, when she could see her surroundings, the place was far more strange. There were metal pipes everywhere, and she had to skip out of the way of something that looked exactly the same as the creature that had taken Hilda. Close up, and in the light of this new place, it looked ghastly. Half the face human and half machine it walked in an almost mechanical way, totally ignoring the group. Picard looked around and then pointed down a corridor.

"That way I think," he said.

They set off with Hilary in the middle, passing the occasional Borg as they went. After a few minutes that felt likje hours to poor Hilary, they came to something that could be described as a room. Round the edge were pods that held Borg, Borg that acted as if they had been switched off. They passed so many that Hilary became afraid that their retreat would be cut off if they woke up. Then ahead she caught some activity, and the paused to take in what was happening.

"Processing Room," murmured Picard. "This is where we should find her."

I'm sure Hilda with have something to say about Borg grammar...not to mention the bold splitting of infinitives which goes on on the enterprise.

Actually, I don't remember serious problems with Borg grammar -- but see no reason Hilda shouldn't assimilate the Borg.

Thank you, Pat.

Hilda is almost like a borg herself. Resistance against her is futile as many young sinners have found out.

Sorry for the long delay.

There was a larger pod, standing away from the wall, and cocooned inside it was Hilda Annersley. The transformation had already started, Hilary saw, for one eye was now the
same as all the rest of the Borg. The other eye registered their presence, and opened wide with hope. Two Borg were watching her, and turned at her reaction, looking stonily at the small party.Picard stepped forward.

"Leave!" he commanded, and to Hilary's surprise they turned and stumped away. Picard smiled grimly and bent over the controls. Then he whipped away the leads and pipes that connected the pod to Hilda, and Riker picked her up in his arms.

"Hurry!" said Picard. "This will bring them very quickly.

They turned and ran back the way they had come, Worf acting as rear-guard, seeming to have eyes in the back of his head. Suddenly three Borg stepped out in front of them, and Riker stopped, breathing a little heavily. Picard moved to the front.

"I am Locutus of Borg. You will step aside." he said. The Borg moved. but there was enough hesitation for Picard to realise that they had very little time. "Run," he said. "We can't beam out from here."

Hilary had thought that they had come a comparatively short distance into the cube, but the return journey seemed never ending. Then something whizzed past her, and Worf turned and fired his weapon. Picard was firing too, but Riker just kept going back towards their starting point.

"Change settings" she heard Worf gasp. "They've adapted."

Bolts of light seemed to be everywhere, and Hilary realised that these were coming from the weapons, and were therefore dangerous. Her heart was beating wildly, and her mouth was so dry that she could find nothing to swallow with. Then they were in the small space that they had started from, and Riker was tapping the little badge he wore on his uniform.

"Five to beam over," he said, as Worf and Picard joined them. Then the column of light enveloped her again, and the next thing she knew they were back on the Enterprise.

Oh good - pleased there is more of this Pat. Sounds as though they reached Hilda just in time if she recognised them.

Thanks
