My first attempt... and I apologise for skewing the timeline *just* a bit!

After Prayers, the Catholic girls filed back into Hall. Miss Annersley waited until everyone had rejoined her form and was seated. When there was silence, she addressed them.

“Now, girls, I would like to introduce you to your new Games mistress. This is Miss David. I’m sure you will all join me in welcoming her to the Chalet School.”

There was a polite round of applause, led by the Head Girl. All eyes were on the new mistress, who rose to acknowledge the welcome. She was slim and athletic, long dark hair pulled back in a severe plait. Dark eyes swept the assembled girls, and she nodded and smiled once before resuming her seat.

“That is all, girls,” said Miss Annersley, and at her gesture, a lively air was struck up on the piano, and there was nothing more to be done but for the girls to march out.

“A new Games mistress?” Mary-Lou was heard to demand. “Is Miss Burnett leaving? Why do we need two Games mistresses?”

“You should have asked Miss Annersley if you’re that curious,” Verity-Anne told her, at which Mary-Lou blushed.

“Perhaps we’ve become too much work for Miss Burnett,” she suggested then. “I wonder what she’ll be like?”

“Hush,” was the only answer she got, for talking was forbidden on the corridors. She had to hold in her questions for now.

They were given a surprise test in Geography, which occupied the whole of their attention. It included map-drawing, and Miss Ferrars was scathing in her remarks on some of their efforts as she circled the room. As a result, it was some time before even Mary-Lou had a chance to wonder about the new mistress again.

The Gang gathered around her at break.

“She looked jolly enough,” opined Doris.

“I can’t stand Games,” said Liesl Becker, a relatively new member of the Gang. She was American, of German parents, now deceased. Her older brother, left in charge of her, had recently joined the Navy and had arranged for Liesl to come to school. She had been instantly adopted by Mary-Lou and co. “I wish Miss Burnett was leaving and nobody replacing her,” she grumbled now.

“Rot. That’d never happen,” said Mary-Lou scornfully. “Well, I suppose we’ll have to wait till Games and then see.”

They didn’t have long to wait, being soon out on the tennis court. Miss David made the whole form run laps around the court, and while they stumbled and puffed, the mistress was not even slightly out of breath when they stopped and she led them in stretches.

She divided the girls into two groups and sent one to the other side of the net, where they were to line up. The first girl in the line, as she explained, was to hit the ball and then run to the back of the line so that the next person could catch the returned ball. If anyone failed to hit it, she was out and should stand at the side.

Liesl was first to serve, but she dropped the ball twice, so Miss David went to her to demonstrate.

“Let this one go,” she called to Mary-Lou, who was waiting on the other side. She showed Liesl twice, slowly, and then did it for real; the ball rocketed across the net, past a gaping Mary-Lou, fetching up unchallenged in the midst of the line of girls. They skittered to get out of its way. Someone retrieved the ball and threw it back across. Without even looking at it, Miss David caught it one-handed and gave it back to Liesl.

“Now you try,” she said calmly.

“I can’t!” Liesl gasped, dropping the ball again.

“Liesl, it is a ball, not a bomb,” Miss David told her sternly. “Do not be such a spineless crawfish.”

Liesl stared at the mistress, glanced at the next girl in line, and back at Miss David. “Um... you mean jellyfish?” she ventured.

“Oh yes. Jellyfish.” Miss David nodded in apparent satisfaction, and held the ball out to Liesl again. “Now.”

Thanks for the comments everyone - I was really scared about jumping into this whole drabble world, and you've made me feel a lot better! This bit takes place on the show, hope those who don't watch it can still follow.

A few days before...

“Grab your gear,” said Special Agent Gibbs, heading for the door, and the team was off to another crime scene.

Flash went the camera, taking in every angle and every minute detail of the room – the scattered contents of a drawer, the blood splattered across the floor, the dead man lying amidst the carnage, staring sightlessly at the ceiling. The camera recorded everything, including the profile of Tony DiNozzo.

“Probey, cut it out!” he protested, blinking.

“Sorry,” muttered Timmy McGee, sheepishly lowering the camera. He turned his attention to picking up evidence and putting it into bags.

Hours later, the dead man was on Dr Mallard’s table, the contents of the drawer were in Abby’s lab, and the man’s identity was clicking its way through the computer. The screen showed a blown-up photo ID. The photo was of a stern-looking, middle-aged man in naval dress uniform.

“The victim’s name is Stephan Becker,” reported Abby. “I checked the bloody prints on the stuff from the crime scene, and...” The display changed to a picture of a younger man, also in a naval uniform. “That’s Kurt Becker, and his prints were all over everything.”

“I take it the name is not a coincidence,” said Gibbs.

“Stephan was Kurt’s uncle,” said Abby. “A family quarrel that got kind of out of hand?”

Gibbs started to leave, but Abby stopped him.

“Wait, Gibbs, there’s more. I found these.” She held up a labelled bag in each hand and shook the first one. “A receipt from the post office. Our victim just sent a package to Switzerland.” She shook the second bag.

“A button?” said Gibbs.

“And not just any button. This button was manufactured specifically for the uniform of a prestigious boarding school in Switzerland.” Abby put down the bag with the receipt and worked on the computer. The photo disappeared, replaced by a website that showed a montage of pictures: a building, snow-capped mountains, a group of smiling girls in gentian-blue uniforms.

“You’re telling me a Swiss schoolgirl did this?” Gibbs wasn’t impressed.

“Of course not, Gibbs. But I did find out that Kurt has a sister at the Chalet School. He must have had it in his pocket or something, and whatever he was looking for, she has it now. And...” She put the bag with the button down too, lining it up perfectly and ignoring Gibbs’ growing impatience. “Kurt Becker left the country two days ago – shortly after time of death.”

She looked at him expectantly, and he didn’t disappoint. “Where did he go, Abby?”

“Switzerland,” she told him as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“Good work, Abs,” said Gibbs.

A smile spread over Abby’s face and she bounced on the balls of her feet as she watched him leave. When she turned back to her table, there was a bucket-sized cup of Caf-Pow on it. She smiled wider.

“It’s just not fair. If anyone has to go undercover in a girls’ boarding school, I don’t see why it can’t be me.” DiNozzo pouted like a child.

“Because, Tony, you do not speak French,” said Ziva David.

“I can...” Tony started.

“Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir does not count,” put in McGee, earning himself a scowl.

“Or German,” Ziva continued.

“German, Sherman...” Tony muttered.

“And besides, the headmistress would prefer a woman.”

“What would you even pretend to teach a school full of girls anyway?” McGee enquired.

Tony gave him a look and a grin, and was about to reply, when Gibbs appeared behind him and smacked him on the back of the head.

“Boss! I got something,” said Tony hurriedly. “Becker’s package was definitely to one Miss Liesl Becker at the Chalet School, and he registered it as a book.”

“Becker was killed for a book?” McGee’s eyebrows puckered.

“Yeah, reading can be dangerous,” said Tony.

“The school is very special,” said Ziva. “They cherish old-fashioned values. They do not allow cell phones and so on inside. In school time, they live as in simpler times.”

Tony made a face and quoted in a portentous voice, “Be cautious. You are holding the bad colour.” When everyone looked at him, he explained with a shrug, “The Village. 2004. OK, it was a terrible movie. But...”

Gibbs sighed. “DiNozzo, McGee, find out more about Becker. Ziva, we have a plane to catch.”

“Which one...” Tony started to ask, but as Gibbs ignored him, he answered himself. “Right. Both. On it, boss.”

Gibbs and Ziva were already gone. Tony tore himself away from the Chalet School website and sat down at his own computer, ‘accidentally’ bumping into McGee as he went.

Post subject:  Re: nCiS

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments! This is a great place to write :) Oh and I'm coming to all the people you've requested... soon!

Ziva had discovered that mistresses in the Chalet School did not, as a rule, have an enormous amount of free time for prowling the corridors and snooping. However, while her new colleagues were enjoying coffee and gossip in the staff room, she made the excuse that she needed to get to know the layout of the school a little more, and took a stroll.

Every schoolgirl she happened to pass seemed extremely polite; they smiled at her and one even asked if she could be of any help in finding where Miss David was going. Ziva refused, equally politely, and walked on. She arrived at a common room; she didn’t go inside, but stayed outside and pretended to check a notebook she held as she listened to the girls inside talking.

“What are you reading, Liesl?” Mary-Lou’s voice carried clearly to where Ziva was standing.

“It’s called Nancy Meets a Nazi,” Liesl replied.

“Ooh! It’s thrilling, isn’t it? Have you really never read it before now?”

“Never. My uncle sent it to me so I thought I might as well try it, and it is good, if a bit young for me. Don’t know why he sent it though – it’s not my birthday or anything, and I never hear from him usually.”

“Oh, can I borrow it when you’ve finished?” An unknown voice. “I’ve never read that either.”

“Sure,” replied Liesl genially.

“I didn’t even know you had an uncle,” said Mary-Lou.

“I might as well not have most of the time,” Liesl admitted. “The last time Kurt or I heard from him was a couple of years ago.”

“Well, did he write you a letter with it? Maybe he wants to get to know you. Maybe he feels bad about not being in touch before.”

“He did.” Ziva heard rustling; presumably the girl was opening the aforementioned letter. “He just says that he found this book and thought I’d enjoy it, though, nothing else. I suppose he came across it and didn’t have anything else to do with it.”

“It must mean he cares something about you,” said Mary-Lou consolingly. “If he didn’t, he’d have given it to a charity shop.”

“That’s true,” conceded Liesl.

Ziva was about to look inside and try to see the book, and what was so special about it that someone would kill for it, when she was distracted by Francie Wilford coming down the corridor making ghastly faces and gagging noises as if she’d been poisoned.

“What is the matter?” she asked in concern.

Francie went bright red. “Matey – I – I mean Matron gave me a tonic and it’s foul,” Francie went back to grimacing, completely forgetting that she was talking to a mistress. “She’s in such a bad mood since she came back from her holiday. Miss Ferrars only thought I looked peaky and she made me...”

“That is quite enough,” said Ziva, recalling her albeit temporary position, and relieved that Francie probably wasn’t about to drop dead in the corridor. “Go and have a drink if it tastes so bad.”

“Yes, Miss David,” said Francie meekly, but as soon as she was out of sight, she made even worse faces.

Then Miss Ferrars arrived, looking for Miss David to make sure she hadn’t lost her way; she tucked her hand through Ziva’s arm and drew her away, chattering about how she must be dying for a cup of coffee and about how much work the Middles were these days.

Just a short bit for the Ducky fans... Gibbs & Hilda comes next!

“Did you know,” said Dr Mallard, leaning over the cadaver on the table, “that in 1471 in Basle, a chicken was tried and found guilty of laying a brightly-coloured egg in defiance of natural law?”

Palmer was never quite sure if Ducky was talking to him or to the corpse, but he answered anyway. “What happened?”

“The chicken was found guilty and burned at the stake. It was apparently the devil in disguise.”

“Hmm. Poor chicken.”

“Of course, the Araucana chicken always lays brightly coloured eggs...” He extracted a bullet from the body and dropped it into Palmer’s waiting evidence cup. “But since they are commonly found in South America, I doubt the devil was in that particular guise. To Abby, please.”

Post subject:  Re: nCiS

Miss Annersley was sitting in her study, looking at some paperwork without really seeing it; she was waiting for a visitor. It would be her first meeting with the new “mistress’s” real boss, since everything had been arranged with her through the local police. Ziva had turned up alone, and as much as Hilda disliked having an undercover officer running Games, she had to admit that she managed her classes quite well. And at least it gave some of the Prefects a little extra time - not that Hilda had had much time to think about that. The idea of a rogue US naval officer somewhere on the premises was what primarily occupied her mind. She tried to reassure herself that there was no way the man could sneak into the school without anyone noticing.

The expected knock on the door came, and Hilda rose and said, “Come”, resigned to the interview. She was expecting a brash American, probably wearing a dozen guns, ready to ride roughshod over everyone else’s interests and opinions, and she was ready to assert herself, standing at her straightest and tallest.

Rosalie opened the door and ushered in the visitor. “Miss Annersley,” she said, “this is Special Agent Gibbs.”

Hilda’s mouth fell open, just for a second, but she quickly collected herself. The door closed again behind Rosalie, leaving her alone with Gibbs.

“Hello, Jethro,” she said quietly. “It’s been a long time.”

“It certainly has,” agreed Gibbs, gazing at her. She supposed she had changed somewhat since the last time he had seen her. So had he. For a moment she was lost in the past, and her cheeks went slightly pink until she stopped herself.

Slightly belated, Hilda remembered her manners and invited Gibbs to sit, then resumed her own seat. With a gentle tap on the door, Rosalie entered again bearing coffee, for which Hilda was grateful, as it distracted her from Gibbs for a moment.

He took a sip of the coffee before speaking, and Hilda didn’t miss the grimace of disgust he made.

“So how is your new teacher working out?” Gibbs enquired, setting the coffee back on the desk with barely a dent in the cream.

“Miss David is quite satisfactory,” said Hilda, “but I doubt you came here to ask that.”

He snorted. “Right. I checked the grounds. No sign of Becker. He’ll be here.”

“Do you know what it is he’s looking for?”

“Not yet.” Gibbs shook his head. “But I will. You talk to the girl?”

“Liesl? Not yet.” Hilda shook her head. “Miss David – I mean Officer David, of course – asked that I wait for you.”

“Good.”

Hilda sipped her coffee, and Gibbs scowled at the air. Then he looked at her as if he still couldn’t believe it.

“So you run a boarding school now,” he said.

“And you don’t drink coffee,” Hilda riposted.

“I don’t drink this coffee,” he corrected; it hadn’t come in a green-bedecked polystyrene cup, after all, and was not so strong and dark that it would fell lesser mortals. But he didn’t explain that to Hilda.

Later, when Rosalie looked into the study to see if the headmistress and her guest needed fresh coffee, she was surprised to see Miss Annersley relaxed and smiling, deep in conversation with the agent. She managed to rein in her reaction long enough to respond to Hilda’s request that she have Liesl Becker report to the study, but it was with popping eyes and a head full of questions that she went about this errand.

If she hadn’t, after all, the dormitory prefect would have had something to say. She pushed her chair in as quietly as possible and left the room. Miss O’Ryan wouldn’t be pleased if she was losing class time because of some misdemeanour, but she honestly couldn’t think of anything she might have done wrong.

Matron was waiting, grim-faced, when Liesl reached the dormitory.
“What have you to say for yourself about this mess?” she demanded.

Mess? Liesl stepped forward so that she could see her cubicle, and gasped.

“But Matron, I – I didn’t!” she whispered.

Every single drawer had been opened and emptied, their contents strewn over her bed. Even her dressing-gown was off its peg with its pockets turned inside-out. The cubicle was in chaos.

“I suppose you forgot your handkerchief, or something, and turned the place upside-down looking for it,” said Matron, completely ignoring Liesl’s denial. “Well, you’ll tidy it all up now, and I’ll see that Miss O’Ryan sets you extra prep so that you can make up the time you’ve lost. Be quick about it. I’ll be back to check.” With this dire warning, Matron departed, leaving Liesl angry and upset in equal measures.

She couldn’t begin to think who might dislike her enough to make this much of a mess to get her into trouble. If she ever found out, she was going to make them pay. While she attempted to set the cubicle in order, she entertained several images of retribution. Mary-Lou might help her find out who the culprit was... But as it was, it was going to take forever to clean this up, and then she had Miss O’Ryan’s reaction to deal with, and extra prep on top of it all... it was so unfair. She was almost in tears by the time she’d finished setting the drawers to rights. But she reminded herself firmly that she was not a Junior, and forced them back.

Matron reappeared as she was setting the photo of herself as a child with her brother and parents – the last one of them all together – back upright by her bed. She cast her critical eye over the bed and pulled open the drawers to inspect them, and finally nodded approval.

“Better. I hope you will remember, Liesl, that untidiness is frowned upon in this school. Now, Miss Annersley would like to see you in her study. Go quickly, please, don’t keep her waiting.” As a parting shot, she added, “And I see you’ve lost a button on your blazer. Really, Liesl. Come to me tomorrow about that.”

Liesl bit her lip on the retort that she badly wanted to make, but knew would do no good and only get her into more trouble. “Yes, Matron,” was all she said. How mean of Matey to report this to Miss Annersley! She hadn’t even done anything! Well – she had to admit to the button part. It had caught on something as she and Kurt rushed to catch her train; Kurt had put it in his pocket and they’d both forgotten about it. She supposed that meant a spell of mending under Matey’s beady eye.

With an inward sigh, she hastened to the study and knocked with a shaking hand. Miss Annersley didn’t sound angry when she called out to enter... and when Liesl did, she was surprised to find not only the Head, but a strange man standing behind the desk as well.

Poor Lisel, am hoping it wasn't Ziva checking out her cubicle but someone else. Do think Matey was being unfair as the mess was a bit OTT and it seems a very easy way to pay someone back and get them into trouble with Matey, since Matey doesn't listen or take into account extreme or unlikely untidiness

Earlier...

Abby was on the phone when Tony and McGee entered her lab, having been spectacularly unsuccessful in finding out anything relevant from the two Beckers’ friends and colleagues (just as well the Boss was away). At least, she was holding the phone to her ear, saying nothing, but looking crosser and crosser. She put it down with a thump when she noticed them.

“I can’t contact Gibbs,” she snapped, glaring at McGee as if it was his fault.

“Uh, Ziva said they didn’t allow technology at the school...” he attempted to explain. “They’ve probably got a signal blocker or something. That’s if you can get any signal there in the first place.” Abby’s eyes narrowed, and he faltered.

“What did you need to contact Gibbs for anyway?” Tony asked, stepping in, to McGee’s relief.

“This,” said Abby, brandishing an evidence jar in which rattled a compressed bullet.

The two men waited patiently for the rest of the explanation. It came at speed.

“This bullet didn’t come from the gun registered to Kurt Becker, which OK wouldn’t be that unusual because why wouldn’t he use a different gun to commit a crime, but I've identified it and it actually comes from a type of Swiss gun, and guns in Switzerland can only be sold to a national or someone with a residence permit, and before this week, Kurt Becker had never been to Switzerland.”

Abby wound down and looked at them expectantly.

“So...” Tony ventured.

“So, I don’t think Kurt killed his uncle.” She looked up at her computer screen, where the photo of Kurt Becker was again displayed.

“His prints were all over the crime scene, Abby,” said Tony.

“That only means he was there.”

“So why’d he run?” asked McGee.

“You have a sister, McGee,” she said. “What would you do if you found out she had something that someone else got killed for?”

“Well, I’d go round to her place and make sure she was OK. Oh,” McGee realised.

Tony was arriving at the same memory. “Probie, you almost got yourself fired for your sister that time. I guess Becker could be doing the same. Going AWOL, getting his prints all over a crime scene... hey, maybe the sister did do it.” His eyes unfocussed for a moment. “A schoolgirl killer. In a uniform. Hmm...”

Abby smacked him on the back of the head, just like Gibbs would. “Focus, Tony.”

“Right.” He cleared his throat and rubbed his head, while McGee smirked. “So Becker went to Switzerland to protect his sister, and Gibbs and Ziva are looking for the wrong guy.”

“Exactly,” said Abby. “Gibbs needs us."

McGee glanced nervously at Tony and back at Abby, who was smiling.

“Abby, you’re not thinking about... Send a telegram. We're not... We can't.”

Before long, they were getting ready to board an aeroplane.

Liesl had been expecting a row, and was stunned when Miss Annersley instead sat her down and explained gently that her uncle was dead. Even though she hadn’t known him all that well, and the letter and book she’d received had been the only contact in years, it was still a shock. She only dimly registered Miss Annersley introducing the stranger as Special Agent Gibbs of the NCIS, which she knew about from Kurt. He sat opposite her and leaned forward.

“Liesl, this is really important. Before he died, your uncle sent you something in the mail.”

Liesl looked at him. “Yes, he sent me a book. He said he thought I’d enjoy it.”

“What was the book?” Gibbs spoke quietly and calmly, but Liesl was confused.

“One of Josephine M Bettany’s – Nancy Meets a Nazi. It’s not rare or anything. The school has a few of them in the library.” Liesl looked to Miss Annersley, who nodded confirmation. “I’m sorry, but why is this important?”

“I think someone-“ He glanced at Miss Annersley, carefully not mentioning who, “-is looking for the book. Where is it now?”

“I lent it to Andrea. She said she hadn’t read it, and I finished it pretty quickly.”

Miss Annersley nodded, filing the name away for later. Gibbs saw, and didn’t ask for details.

“But it’s a kid’s book. I mean, why would anyone want it? They can get it anywhere. Oh!” Liesl burst out, remembering. “Is that why someone made a mess of my cubey? I thought they just wanted to get me into trouble.”

“Your cubicle?” Miss Annersley repeated.

“Oh, I thought Matey – Matron – told you. I was sure that was why you wanted to see me. Then when you told me about Uncle Stephan, I forgot. She sent for me out of History and made me clean it up and asked Miss O’Ryan for extra prep, but I didn’t do it.” This last was tinged with righteous indignation.

“He was looking for the book,” said Gibbs.

“He?” Liesl echoed.

“Don’t worry about it. That’s what I’m here for.”

Gibbs was about to say more, but a knock on the study door interrupted him. In answer to Hilda’s “Come”, Rosalie opened it and looked in, somewhat nervously.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, Miss Annersley, but there are some people here asking to see Agent Gibbs.” Rosalie looked slightly perturbed, but she didn’t elaborate.

With a sigh, Gibbs said, “Send them in. I think we’re done here.”

Miss Annersley turned to Liesl. “It’s almost time for Mittagessen. Do you feel as if you could join the others, my dear, or would you rather go to bed?”

“Oh, I’ll go back to them, please, Miss Annersley,” said Liesl. “I’m all right, really. At least, it is safe, isn’t it – I mean, the person won’t...”

“We’ll make sure of it,” Gibbs assured her.

“One more thing,” said Miss Annersley, “Please don’t mention this to the others. I’m sure you understand that we don’t want to cause panic. And I’ll have a word with Miss O’Ryan.”

“Thank you, Miss Annersley. I won’t say anything.” Liesl left, with a wobbly curtsy. On the way out, she passed a trio of strange figures, and she swore she heard a smothered gasp from Miss Annersley behind her. When she glanced back, it was to see Gibbs glaring at the new arrivals; two smartly-dressed men, and a girl in a truly bizarre outfit with pigtails and knee-high boots.

The following day, Francie Wilford was in trouble with Miss Ferrars for staring out the window with her mouth open. Instead of paying attention to the lesson, she was watching a strange girl walking in the grounds below. It certainly wasn’t a Chalet girl down there, dressed in black from head to toe and holding a black lace parasol over her head. Maybe someone was already practising for Hallowe’en, Francie thought, just before Ferry called her name and made her jump so violently that she was lucky to save her ink from going all over her atlas.

When Miss Ferrars looked out to see what was so fascinating, the figure was gone. Francie, under the force of her scowl, was a model student for the rest of the lesson.

Abby had been out in the grounds, but a cat had caught her attention, and she followed it.

“Who’s a pretty kitty,” she cooed, stroking the cat, who responded joyfully. “Do you live here? Maybe we can find you some food.”

The cat meowed and wound itself around Abby’s legs before leaping away towards the school building. Abby smiled and followed.
She found herself in the kitchen, the cat staring expectantly from her to an empty saucer.

“OK,” she told the cat, lowering her parasol. She left it standing in the corner and looked around for a refrigerator. “I’ll find some milk for you, and then...” She stopped, because sitting on the floor and leaning against the wall was a familiar young man, in a somewhat crumpled naval uniform.

“Oh,” said Abby. “Hello.”

Kurt Becker struggled to his feet. He looked as if he was going to run. “Are... are you a teacher?” he asked.

“No, I’m with NCIS,” said Abby. “Don’t worry. I know you didn’t kill your uncle.”

“You do?” The mention of NCIS had sparked alarm in his face, but now he relaxed somewhat. “Who did?”

“I don’t know.” She held up one finger. “Yet.” Looking around the kitchen, Abby sat down on the floor near the fridge, and patted the floor for him to join her. The cat jumped onto her lap. Abby stroked it. “What are you doing here, Kurt?”

“I had to make sure Liesl was OK,” Kurt began. “I know I’m going to be in trouble, but I had to. The maids let me hide out here. They’ve been great.”

With a deep breath, Abby said, “Why is Liesl in danger because of a book about Nazis?”

“It’s not the book,” said Kurt. “It’s what’s hidden inside it.”

Since you ask, ChubbyMonkey... :)

“So what’s hidden in the book, Kurt?” Abby pressed, since the young man lapsed into silence. “If you tell me, it might help us find the real killer.”

“Microdots,” said Kurt. “There are microdots somewhere inside the book. Liesl doesn’t know.”

“Microdots. What’s on them?” Abby was ready to jump up and tell Gibbs about this. Whatever this secret information turned out to be had to help them find the killer. But Kurt shook his head.

“Uncle Stephan never told me. All I know is it’s something Great-Aunt Gertrud stole from the Nazis years ago. All of us know that story. She came to this school, years ago – as a spy, but then she turned against them. Somehow she managed to get hold of the microdots, and she kept them.”

“Great choice of book to stick them in,” Abby commented.

“They eventually came to Uncle Stephan,” Kurt continued. “After my parents died, he told me about the book. He had it in his safe for years.” He looked at Abby. “I never really thought about it after that. I certainly never expected that someone would kill Uncle Stephan for the microdots. And when I found out he’d sent the book to Liesl... I’ve been watching her whenever she’s outside doing Games or whatever, but I can’t keep an eye on her all the time.”

“Well, she’s safe enough here,” said Abby. “We’re here to catch the killer. And Officer Ziva is-“

“Watching you,” came Ziva’s voice from the door unexpectedly, where she was leaning, listening to the conversation.

“God!” Abby complained. “Is it too much to ask that you’d make a little noise before you sneak up on me?”

“Sorry,” said Ziva unrepentantly.

“I have to tell Gibbs about this,” said Abby. She shooed the cat off her lap. Her chunky black boots clattered on the floor as she got to her feet, and Kurt had to avert his eyes from the shortness of her skirt. “Kurt, stay here. You’ll only get in more trouble if you don’t.”

He nodded, and Abby snatched up her parasol and hurried out. Ziva followed, casting a doubtful glance at Kurt.

Outside, DiNozzo was watching a group of girls getting ready for a practice match under the command of a prefect, unwisely diverting his attention from the boss. As soon as he realised Gibbs and McGee had walked past him, he hastened to catch up.

“So, boss, you and the head know each other?” he asked, pulling even with Gibbs, who didn’t reply. “Let me guess. One of the ex-wives? Another old partner?”

Still no reply, but a killer glare from Gibbs. Tony decided he’d better change the subject and fast. He tried to think of something pertinent.

“Gibbs! Gibbs!”

They both looked around to see Abby waving madly from under her parasol, running towards them, followed by Ziva. They waited for her to get closer.

“Guess what I just found out,” she burst out, bouncing up and down. Predictably, she got the glare as well, and calmed down. She related what Kurt had told her.

“Get the book,” Gibbs ordered. “Find out what’s in there. McGee, get that marine out of the kitchen and into our hotel. Stay with him. DiNozzo, with me.”

“You want me to interrogate him, boss?” asked McGee.

Gibbs looked at him as if he’d asked the most ridiculous question ever, and McGee subsided. Of course he knew it was a ridiculous question. The only problem was that he couldn’t work out if it was ridiculous because he should interrogate Becker, or because he shouldn’t.
Tony had made no response, being again distracted by the girls.

“I’m on it,” Ziva murmured, and headed back towards the school with McGee trailing behind. She could still hear Gibbs roar.

“Today, DiNozzo!”

“On your six, boss!”

Abby was left alone. “I’ll need to find something to read the microdots with for when we find the book. And that’ll be a lot of pages to look through for the microdots.” She sighed at Gibbs’ departing back. “No problem,” she told him, but he was gone.

Hilda Annersley had briefly considered making Abby put on a Chalet School uniform – she almost looked young enough to pass for a pupil – but she reconsidered almost immediately. The image of Abby with her spider-web tattoo showing above the collar of the uniform (and Hilda, for some reason, couldn’t dismiss the knee-high boots and jaunty pigtails from her mental picture) somehow didn’t quite fit. A visiting teacher wasn’t right either, for the same reasons. Perhaps a prospective pupil, in dire need of reform; or someone’s guardian, checking out the school for her ward.

They drew curious glances all the way from her study to the science lab. Abby merely smiled in a friendly manner at everyone they passed, and seemed completely oblivious to their reactions. Hilda was trying to keep up with Abby’s rapid explanation of the large amount of information that could be stored on a microdot – no larger than a full stop, or period as Abby called it – and then retrieved by looking at it under a microscope, hence the trip to the lab. Miss Wilson was certain to have something that Abby could use.

Hilda wondered if Abby would tell Nell Wilson why she wanted a microscope – or if Jethro considered all of them, even Hilda herself, to be under suspicion until he had discovered the true killer. She felt slightly indignant at that, but after all, someone had ransacked a pupil’s room, and perhaps her School was not as secure as she liked to think.

Miss Wilson had no class at the moment, thankfully – she was alone in the lab, taking advantage of the time to mark some work. When Hilda and Abby entered, she was in the process of scoring a deep red slash across half a page of writing, and her face when she looked up at the door was like thunder.

“If this girl spent a little more time paying attention in class, and a little less time daydreaming...” she began, before catching sight of Abby at Hilda’s shoulder.

Hilda cleared her throat. “This is Miss Wilson, the Science mistress. Nell, this is Abby Sciuto.” She decided not to even try. “Miss Sciuto would like to view the lab.”

Nell put down the pages and the red pen, and though her eyes lingered on the tattoo, she smiled and came forward to shake Abby’s hand. Her curious glance at Hilda promised that she’d ask questions later.

“Come in. Of course I can give you a tour. Is there anything in particular I can show you?”

“Microscopes,” said Abby. She started to explain what she needed, and went on to talk about the computers she had in her lab in America, most of which sounded like a different language to Hilda, but Nell seemed to understand it all and happily responded, sympathising at the lack of equipment here but promising to help as much as she could.

“I’ll leave you two to it, then,” Hilda murmured.

As she shut the door, ‘Bill’ was leaning into a cupboard, retrieving microscopes, and Abby was giggling at some scientific quip she’d made.

“Not exactly my lab, but it’ll do,” said Abby, surveying the room. All she needed now was for Ziva to come up with the book, and they were in business.

Liesl entered the Common Room, where the other members of her form were engaged in various pursuits. There was a quiet conversation going on by the window, and the girls giggled now and then and hushed each other. Nobody wanted a mistress or Prefect down on them at this stage in their school careers. Around a table, another small group was playing some kind of paper game. Mary-Lou seemed to be the instigator of this. She waved at Liesl, gesturing to invite her to join in, but Liesl declined with a smile. Instead, she went over to tall Andrea, who was scowling at a small jigsaw in front of her.

“Hey, how are you getting on with that book?” she asked, perching on the arm of the chair beside her.

Andrea looked up over the top of her glasses. “Oh, hi! I’ve read a couple of chapters already – it’s really good. I felt like doing something different this afternoon, but I’m not getting very far.” She waved at the jigsaw.

“You mind if I grab it for a few minutes?” asked Liesl. “I’d like to take down a couple of quotes from it. It’s a new idea I had.” She held up a notebook – the one she used to record lists of French and German vocabulary, but turned the other way so that it looked as if she was on the first page. “I’ve only got one or two so far, but if I do every book I read, it’ll get full soon enough.”

“What a jolly good idea! Hang on a sec – here it is.” Andrea produced the book.

“Thanks! I’ll give it back to you when I’ve finished. Oh, and try this...” Liesl leaned over and moved one of Andrea’s pieces away from where she’d jammed it, clicking it into a new position.

“No wonder I couldn’t get any further,” Andrea groaned.

Liesl chuckled and retreated to a quieter spot with her book. She opened it at random and started writing, directly under something Shakespearean that she’d scribbled in just to make it look good. Then she clapped a hand to her head.

“Oh no!” she exclaimed. “I forgot – I’ve to go and see Matey about the button I lost off my blazer.”

“Rotten luck!” Mary-Lou sympathised, looking up from the game. “You’d better scoot off, then – soonest started and all that.”

Liesl grimaced – not acting – and left the room, still holding the book and notebook. Outside, Miss David was waiting in the corridor, silent and unmoving as a ghost. She took the book that Liesl held out and secreted it inside her jacket. Nobody watching would have even seen the exchange. Liesl looked up into her dark eyes, and received a reassuring nod. They both walked on in opposite directions.

Matron received Liesl and her offending blazer with few words, merely providing her with a spare button, needle and thread. She said no more about the cubicle either, although Liesl had been expecting a few cutting remarks – perhaps Miss Annersley had interceded on her behalf. She understood now that it hadn’t been a schoolgirl’s prank, but something far more dangerous. Now that Miss David had the book and whatever secrets it contained, maybe she was safer, and all she’d have to worry about was how to explain to Andrea that she no longer had the book.

Glad you're enjoying it, a few more bits to come before it's done! Yes NCIS is very addictive... and yes I did consider putting Abby in a mini uniform... she could be a Real CS Girl!

“And then,” Abby’s voice was audible outside the lab, “Sister Rosita slipped on the alley and slid halfway down it with the ball. If she’d gone any further – well, it would’ve been a strike, for sure.”

Miss Wilson burst out laughing. “That’s terrible,” she managed. “I do hope she wasn’t injured.”

“Oh, no, she was fine.”

Ziva pushed open the door. Abby was perched on the teacher’s desk, and the Science mistress was rosy-faced, mopping her streaming eyes.

“Ziva!” said Abby happily. “I was just telling Nell all about the nuns I bowl with. Oh, and I told her what we’re looking for. I had to. She’s the only one around here with anything I can use.”

“I got the book,” said Ziva, taking it out, and saying nothing about Abby’s breach of secrecy.

Abby sighed. “This is going to be fun – looking for something the size of a point in a book. How many pages are there? No, don’t tell me. It’s too depressing.” She took the book and flicked through the pages.

“Like looking for a pin in a haystack,” Ziva agreed.

“Actually,” Abby began, but shook her head. “Close enough.”

“Abby, people have been reading the book. Could the microdots have fallen out?”

“They should be stuck pretty firmly, but good point. I’m sure Gertrud thought of that when she put them in here. Let’s start with the parts nobody ever reads – like the publication page, and the introduction.”

‘Bill’ gasped out loud at that. Abby ignored the sound and turned to the microscope.

Thanks, I find it addictive as well, even watching the old ones with Kate in them for the "nth" time, as well as synopsis of series only available in the States.

Thanks love the idea that no one reads the publication details and the introduction.

“What have you got?” Gibbs demanded, coming into the lab without knocking.

Miss Wilson had left to carry on with her duties, but leaving a notice on the door that the lab was out of use until further notice, so that Abby could work undisturbed. Ziva had gone off to supervise prep, and returned when it was over to find Abby still scouring the book. Now it was getting late, and the Juniors had gone to bed already.

Abby didn’t look up from the microscope. “I found one microdot. I copied it all down.” She waved a piece of paper at Gibbs, who plucked it from her fingers.

“German?” he asked, frowning at it.

Ziva translated. “Gold chalice, diamond ring, necklaces, gold coins, jewelled candle-holders...”

“A list?” Gibbs interrupted.

She nodded. “Below that, this name...” she pointed, “is the name of a place here in Switzerland.”

Abby let out a little yelp. “Oh! I’ve found another one.”

“What is it, Abs?” asked Gibbs.

“See for yourself.” She stepped away from the microscope. “If we weren’t in Switzerland, I would so deserve a Caf-Pow.”

Gibbs squinted into the eyepiece. He studied it for a while, and then said, “A map?”

“A treasure map,” said Abby, starting to bounce again. “I bet all the things on the list on the first microdot are hidden where that map says to go.”

“When we get home, you can put two Caf-Pows on my tab,” said Gibbs. “Copy that one, too.”

They began to piece it all together. “Nazi treasure,” Ziva said. “Gertrud Becker stole this so that she would have something to bargain with if she ever needed it.”

“Then when things calmed down,” Abby took up the tale, as she did her best to sketch the map by hand and not think how much easier it would be with her machines, “she kept it and passed it on. Maybe she didn’t know if it’d be needed again, or maybe she was just trying to provide for her family, who knows.”

“Except someone found out about it,” said Gibbs, dragging their attention from Gertrud’s adventures to the murder victim who’d started all of this.

The door opened again and Tony bounded in. “Boss!”

“You got something?”

“Oh, I got something all right. I found out something about the killer from a very helpful firearms dealer in the town.”

“He spoke English?” Ziva asked with a smirk.

“I don’t know why you assume I don’t speak German,” said Tony. “OK, yeah, he spoke English.”

“Get to the point, DiNozzo,” said Gibbs.

“Right, boss. Well, I told him all the stuff Abby found out about the bullet. He checked his records. He remembered the woman who bought the gun that killed Stephan Becker.” Tony waited expectantly.

“A woman,” Gibbs noted.

“And that’s not all. He remembers seeing her in town now and then with schoolgirls. Schoolgirls who wear...” he paused for dramatic effect, “...blue uniforms.”

“Then she is a mistress,” said Ziva. She thought about the other teachers in the school. Which of them would be capable of murder?

“Good work, DiNozzo,” said Gibbs.

Tony smirked. “I found out one more thing,” he said. “While I was out, since I had signal, I made a couple phone calls, and it seems Stephan Becker was seeing someone. Well, I say seeing. They were penpals, but they visited each other. So all we have to do is find out which of the staff took a little break recently, and...”

“I’ll talk to Hilda,” Gibbs started to say, but the look on Ziva’s face halted his words. She was remembering something important that someone had said.

I am sorry, but no revelations YET...

Flashback...

Letter from Stephan Becker to...?

My dear,
I’m so glad that our misunderstanding hasn’t spoiled things. We’ve shared so much, I’d hate to lose you as a friend, so it was good to hear that you’re still coming to visit as planned. I’m looking forward to showing you some of my favourite restaurants. I must say that it will be nice to have a few days’ leave, since I’ve been working so hard lately.

I’m enclosing a train timetable and some information about some of the things you might want to visit while you’re here – just let me know. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Yours,
Stephan

She crumpled the letter in her hand and dropped it into a bin in the ladies’ room in the airport. She couldn’t bear to read it again. It was almost as bad as hearing him say but I thought you realised... my dear, I think of you as a friend. A good friend, but that’s all. She’d spent time berating herself, and more time cursing him; it had taken a while to recover from the burning humiliation.

He was going to pay for that, and the treasures he held would be just compensation for what she’d endured and the time wasted on the man. He’d regret ever having told her about his aunt’s bequest.

Now, though, she schooled her expression so that Stephan would never know the effect he’d had on her – not until it was too late, and she was long gone with the precious book...

It was the middle of the night, and Liesl had been surprised to be shaken awake. It was too dark to see who was there at first, but it was a woman’s voice who whispered, “Come along, quickly.”

She stumbled along, bleary-eyed, wondering why she was being summoned at this late hour. Perhaps someone was ill and she could do something to help? Or was the dormitory being evacuated – was the murderer here? But nobody else seemed to be moving, and the woman was going quietly. Following her lead, Liesl did her best not to make any noise.

She soon found out that her guess was more accurate than she had believed – and nothing could have prepared her for the face she saw when she was pushed into a small room, and the shadowy figure, now visible, turned from the door holding a gun.

“So it was you,” Liesl said, looking defiantly up at the face of the killer. “You killed Uncle Stephan. Why?”

“You wouldn’t understand.” The gun didn’t waver.

“And you trashed my cubey, too.” Liesl glanced around, but could see no escape.

“Just tell me where the book is.” She was holding the key of the door in her other hand. “Tell me and let’s be done with all this.”

“It’s all been about that damn book!” Liesl cried. It didn’t seem a moment to obey language rules. “Well, you’re too late. I haven’t got it any more, so there!”

“Where is it?” Frustration tinged the words.

“Miss David has it, and you’ll never take it away from her! Just you try it and see!”

The gun came up a fraction, and Liesl flinched, waiting – would she do it? Would it hurt much? But instead of a gunshot, there was a crash and a thud and the door broke open.

“Drop your weapon!” It was Agent Gibbs. Liesl gasped.

“Put it down... Matron,” said Ziva, right behind him.

Dang! I was so sure it was going to be Andrea, as she's tall! I am really enjoying this, as I'm a big fan of nCIS. Gibbs is my favourite (I'll admit to a small crush-ette on him!). Abby's fun, but the kooky music they keep playing when she's in a scene really annoys me.

Good work!

Luckily for everyone, Matron had seen the sense in giving up when confronted with three armed NCIS agents. She had been hauled away by Tony, protesting that she’d never intended to kill Stephan and she wasn’t going to kill Liesl either, things had just happened...

Liesl threw herself into Ziva’s arms, and Ziva did her best to comfort the girl. In the end, she decided to take Liesl to her own bedroom for the rest of the night. Abby went to the kitchen and then followed them with warm milk. In the meantime, Gibbs went to explain the situation to Hilda.

Hilda was more than shocked. She decided to put off making decisions until the morning, but she needed to figure out what to tell the staff and school about why Matron was missing. Although she went back to bed, she barely slept. In the morning, she had Fruhstuck in her own study along with Gibbs and Abby. McGee arrived with Kurt Becker shortly after it had been served, and Hilda rang to request extra, guessing that they wouldn’t be the only people to turn up. Sure enough, DiNozzo was shown in, dishevelled, having spent the night sorting out paperwork with the local police, and Ziva with a very pale Liesl came last. Liesl hugged her brother but said little.

“How are you, my dear?” asked Hilda, pouring coffee for the girl.

“I’m fine,” Liesl responded unconvincingly. She was inclined to stay close to Ziva, pulling her chair nearer. She took the coffee and wrapped her hands around it.

Gradually, as the Head encouraged her to make a good meal, the colour started to come back into her cheeks.

“She’s not coming back, is she?” she asked as she finished.

“No,” said Gibbs. “She’s gone.”

“She wanted the book. Did you find out why?”

Abby answered. “We found a treasure map inside it. It was hidden on a microdot.” She started to explain that, but Gibbs shot her a look, and she stopped. Instead she told Liesl – and Hilda, who hadn’t heard all the details – about the treasure that Gertrud Becker had hoped to use as a bargaining chip, should she ever need it. “I guess it’s yours now,” she wound up.

Liesl looked over at Kurt, and shook her head. “That stuff didn’t belong to Great-Aunt Gertrud in the first place. I get why she took it, but we don’t need it any more, and it’s brought us nothing but trouble. Couldn’t it be given back to the people the Nazis took it from? I mean, if it’s still there – and if they’re still around, or their families.”

Hilda nodded approval. “That would be the best thing, if possible.”

After the meal, she rang the bell for the maid to come and clear up. Everyone sat in silence while this was done. Then, at last, it was time to leave.

Ziva took a moment to visit the Staff room in order to say goodbye to the mistresses she had got to know during the assignment. When she returned, she found everyone waiting by the front door, except one person.

“Where is Gibbs?” she asked.

“He’s... not coming,” said Tony.

“Apparently he hasn’t had a vacation since Mexico,” said McGee.

“I see,” said Ziva thoughtfully. “This would not have something to do
with the headmistress... would it?”

Abby gave her a knowing smile.

“I hear the headmistress offered you a permanent change of career,” said Tony. “Tempted, Ziva?”

Instead of answering, Ziva shot back, “Jealous, Tony?”

“Who, me?” Tony huffed.

Liesl hugged Kurt. “Are you in trouble for coming here?”

“Well, I did go AWOL,” said Kurt. “And I did run away from a crime scene... But Agent Gibbs is going to put in a good word for me. I’ll see you soon, sis.”

She nodded and released him, then stood by the door to watch them go.

As the team strolled down the driveway, she heard Tony say, “I’m in charge while Gibbs is on vacation.”

“Temporarily,” McGee muttered, still audible.

Liesl turned and walked back into school.

The end :)
