Don't worry Susan - I checked my 'nice' list twice to make sure you were on it!

2.
Dear Santa,

This year I have been realy realy realy realy nice. If I'm on your 'naughty' list there has been a mistake. Don't listen to Phil, any thing she says is wrong, shes' jealous cos she got caught nicking mince pies yesterday and I didn't. Because I didn't steal any I mean, not that I just didn't get caught.

Please bring me a remote-controll car, a remote-controll ship, a remote-controll hellicopter that realy flies. And a set of soldier's like Felix has, they are smashing and he wont let me play with them.

Your special friend,
Geoff Maynard

Dear Father Christmas,

Thank you very much for the presents you brought me last year. Thank you for remembering that I like mint more than I like chocolate. Mamma always forgets and buys me chocolate. I do like chocolate, but I like peppermints more. All I want this year is Peace on Earth and Goodwill for all Mankind. But also a pony. Papa says that he can't afford to buy me one because feeding it and housing it is too expensive, so could you also bring a stable and ten years worth of feed? I know that that's a lot to fit in your sleigh, so I guess you could bring the stables and feed this year, and then next year bring the pony.

Lots of love,
Marya Cecilia Maynard

Dear Santa,

You might have heard that I don't believe in you, but that's not true. Lucy said you were just your father, but I don't think that can be true because Dad would never climb down our chimney. I don't need anything much this year. Mama already said that Felix and I were getting our own wrist-watches for our next birthdays. But, if it's possible, could you please bring me a pair of point shoes? Even though I'm not in point class quite yet, Frau Sauer said I would be very soon and I'd like to be ready.

Yours Sincerely,
Felicity

Dear Father Christmas,

It may come as a surprise to you that I'm writing this letter, as it's been a few years since I've done so, but Claire was very worried that I might not receive any presents if I didn't.

"But you know that Santa only brings toys for young boy and girls," I reminded her.

"But he might be annoyed if you don't write," she said. "Mamma always makes me say 'Merry Christmas' to people even if they don't get me anything." Well, I didn't have an answer to that! So, dear Saint Nick, this is merely a letter wishing you Merry Christmas, and hoping your travels on Christmas night go well.

With Love,
Erica

Mike,

Good idea - I know we used to go in thirds with Steve, but I wasn't sure if you'd still want to share since he was no longer with us to organise it! I've actually had my eye on a book for Dad - a medical biography - so maybe we could get one for Mamma as well? I know that you think buying books is boring, at best, but you have to admit that nos parents will appreciate them a lot more than you do.

What on earth was your form up to last night that got all your privileges revoked? Luckily for you mine haven't been, and the Hodge has already cleared me to go into town on Saturday. Let me know if this sounds good to you - a note in my locker is fine, if you can escape from detention.

Dear Mary-Lou,

Thanks again for that smashing tea. I know you said it wasn't much, but it was so good compared to the usual grub we get fed. I expect you know well enough - I remember you coming to stay in your university hols and chowing down on Anna's cooking! Can't wait to be going home - only a month until Christmas, now, and hopefully all the gingerbread I can eat when I get there.

I know when you said if there was anything I needed, to look you up, you were talking about lectures and tutors things, but actually what I really need is to know what in the world I should buy for Jamie? I wouldn't bother with a baby usually (family or not they don't exactly appreciate gifts) but he is my nephew, and I sort of feel I should, since he's the first one. I expect you'd have some idea what to do for him, since women always do.

Thanks again for tea, and thanks (in advance!) for your help with my Christmas conundrum,
Stephen Maynard

We always left food for the reindeer as well.

When we were very little we spent Christmas at our chalet in the Laurentians (mountain range in Quebec with lots of skiing, where many Quebecers have chalets). It was an A-frame house (slopping roofs that almost come to the ground - looks like an "A"). We'd be able to see reindeer hoof prints and sled tracks in the snow on the roof.

Sorry, Susan, for today's rather late present! Unfortunately when I woke up this morning I found out that the elves had somehow confused Newcastle, Australia, with Newcastle, England, and Newcastle, Ireland, and Newcastle, Canada, and Newcastle - well, you get the picture! I had to spend all day sorting the presents back into their right places, or there'd be a lot of very confused and unhappy children come Christmas Day!

For those of you who are wondering - my reindeer always like a good carrot, or even a crisp lettuce leaf, which Prancer tell me is most refreshing. My own tastes run more in the sherry and Christmas mince pie direction, although I'm more than happy to drink a beer when one is left out! (Don't even get me started on milk and cookies, though.)

11.
Dear Emmy,

I'm afraid, my dear, I've been rather slack - as usual! - and you won't get this letter until the New Year. That's probably O.K., though, since your present is rather more of a English gift than an Australian one, so you won't want to use it until June or July anyway!

I'll admit I was surprised to have received your Christmas card so early. You're usually worse than I am at sending things on time, as I'm sure you'll agree! If this is Keith's influence then colour me very impressed. At any rate, I'm going to gently hint once again that it would be lovely to meet him before the big day - surely you could both tag along the next time your father makes a trip to Britain?

I know last time I wrote to you I was all complaints that I was going to be working over Christmas, again, but it turns out that I don't have to after all. Nicola - Dr Thomson - was going to take use her time off to see her brother, who's in the navy, but it turns out his ship won't be in over Christmas after all, so she generously swapped shifts with me, so I can have a few days off for Christmas! I was worried that there wouldn't be room for me at home anyway, since Mother and Father had already give my room away - you know what our place is like during the festive season! - but Len's somehow found room for me at hers, so that's O.K.

I'll write again soon and give you all my proper news - I only meant to write something brief to apologise for leaving your present so late (sorry again, by the way!) and my tea break is just about over. Love you and miss you lots, and I hope you and Keith and your families have a very Merry Christmas.

Dear Felicity,

Thank you very much for your note - I'm so glad everyone likes the Christmas play. I can't take all the credit for it, you know. Mamma must have done a fair but of editing in order to make it doable, as I'll admit that even though I had a fair few ideas, they didn't always read so well when I got them down on paper, and some of them were far too complicated to ever work! And of course, Mr Denny and Nina Rutherford both set some of the songs to music: I hope that you've thanked them, too!

Congratulations on getting the part of the Christmas Spirit! Between you and me, it was you I was thinking of when I wrote her, although of course I had no idea who Auntie Hilda would cast as whom. But with your balletic gracefulness you should be just exactly right. I wish I could come and see it! It does seem rather hard not to be able to see my first play performed, but this time of year is our busiest at work. Perhaps you could ask Papa to take a photograph of you and the kids in your costumes? I know he has a camera somewhere, even if he seldom uses it. Then I'll get to see you, sort of, at least!

Give my love to everyone, and tell them I'm looking forward to seeing you all for Christmas.

Your loving sister,
Con

Hello Mamma,

Baby and I just popped over to see you about tomorrow's arrangements, but Mike says that you and Steve and Charles had gone to do a bit of last-minute shopping - I bet the boys love that! - and I didn't trust Mike to remember everything, so I'm leaving you a note.

Reg and I thought that we'd be over for breakfast, if that's alright. I'd like to see everyone open their presents, and if I'm being honest, I also want the chance to dress up Baby in his new winter things! Of course, it will only happen if I can get Con and Margot up in time - they're both such slug-a-beds, these days! Anyway, just give me a 'phone call to let me know if that suits you.

Love,
Len

Susan, I hope you have a good Monday! After sorting out the Newcastle debacle I've managed to get the European presents finished and have started loading up my second sleigh with gifts for North America - only for the good boys and girls, though! Ho ho ho!

14.
Jack,
Bother bother bother - I bought Cecil chocolates again!!! Do you still have those mints Eugen gave you? Any chance you can shove them in her stocking when you do the rest? I hate to disappoint her.
xxx Joey
Oh, and I suppose you've read the children's letters by now - I thought Phil had eaten rather more pies than any one person could have! Do you think we ought to give neither of them any sweets? No, we probably should. It is Christmas, after all! Don't argue, dear (I know you'll have your arguing face on when you read this). We'll forgive and forget for now.
Love, JO
PS Hope your day hasn't been too trying! You can sleep in in the morning before Len and co. descend. I know she said she'd be here for breakfast, but if she gets Con, Len, Reg and baby out the door much before nine I'll eat my hat.
PPS Don't forget to leave Father Christmas!

15.
Dear Jack, Joey, Reg, Len, Con, Margot, Stephen, Charles, Erica, Mike, Felix, Felicity, Cecil, Phil, Geoff, Claire and Jamie,

You have all been very good this year, so I haven't had to put coal into anyone's stocking. I hope you all enjoy your gifts, and have a most wonderful day. Thank you very much for the gingerbread and the glass of sherry - a very nice snack, after having to bring all your presents down the chimney! I suspect it was Anna who made the gingerbread, so please tell her it was delicious (and there's a very special present for her under the tree).

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Father Christmas

That's it from the Maynard family's mailbag! Susan, I hope you've enjoyed this: and tomorrow there'll be something for you in your own (virtual) mailbag! :D
