The new girl sat in the corner of the compartment, letting the talk around her go over her head. This was a pity, for if she had listened, she would have realised that they were all new to the school, and that she wasn’t the only one with worries. However, all she was thinking about was the fact that she really didn’t want to go to the Chalet School at all. She had read the prospectus from cover to cover a number of times, trying to come up with reasons for not choosing that particular school, but none of them had persuaded her parents. Even the languages business had backfired, for that was one of the chief reasons for choosing the school as far as her parents were concerned. The fact that she found it hard to talk to people in her own language, let alone another one, held no water for them. So here she was, on her way to Switzerland, and feeling hard done by, scared and angry all at the same time. The other girls had already given up trying to draw her into the conversation, so she sat there making plans.
The train finally pulled into the station at Dover Docks, and the girls were all hustled out onto the platform and sent to line up at the barrier, ready to pass through Customs. She knew this was her last chance, for once through the barriers there would be no turning back. So taking advantage of all the other people milling about on the platform, she slipped away from the long line of schoolgirls and headed for the steps leading to the other platform, where the train for London was waiting. She intended to make for her Gran’s house, hoping that she would support her and look after her. Half way up the stairs, where there was a landing, a hand fell on her should and she was swung round to face the mistress that had welcomed her at Victoria Station and put her on the train.
“Just where do you think you are off to, young lady?” she asked. “Come back with me now, and behave yourself. There’s no time to go into the whys and wherefores now, so I’ll talk to you once we get to school.”
When they got to the barrier, she was pout into the charge of one of the big girls that she guessed was a Prefect, while the mistress went off to make sure everything was going smoothly elsewhere. It was clear that she wasn’t too popular here either, for the girl had a frown on her face, and called her a ‘sickening nuisance’. Once through the barrier, with all hope of reprieve gone, she gave up any thought of resistance and went where she was told, climbing the long bridge onto the ferry and settling down with others in her own age group. When they all got their lunches out she followed suit, though still without uttering a word to0 anyone. At Calais she was also well behaved, although she knew that a strict eye was being kept on her. But she had no idea now of doing anything other than go on to the school, for she had no knowledge of French, not money enough to get herself home again even if she had.
When they reached Paris they were taken for a meal to the station restaurant, and she enjoyed the strange food immensely. The excitement about being in a foreign country was starting to take hold, adding to the mix of emotions, but making them somehow easier to deal with. Once of the express to Basle, they were shown how to extend the seats, making a sloping back and pulling out the little extra piece at the front, so that the two seats in each compartment almost met. This meant that they could stretch out a little, and get some sort of sleep on the overnight journey into Switzerland.
It was early when they reached Basle, and they were stiff and tired, but a through wash helped to revive them, and a Continental breakfast of rolls and black cherry jam set them up for the rest of the day. Then they were marched out of the station and onto a fleet of coaches for the drive to the Gornetz Platz. The countryside grew more spectacular as they headed up into the mountains, and by the time they were running alongside Lake Thun she was wondering how much higher they would have to go. When they turned off up the road to the Platz she had to close her eyes, for the road twisted and turned, with a steep drop to the valley below on one side or the other. She was also beginning to feel very nervous, as she knew that an uncomfortable interview lay ahead of her, as well as all the new things that school itself presented.
They were welcomed at the door of the school by the Head, a tall dignified lady, who nevertheless had a lovely smile and a warm voice, and she was somewhat comforted by this. Then they were marched into the building, and shown the way to their Splashery where they tidied themselves ready for the evening meal. When the rest were taken to the common room she was taken on one side by the mistress and directed into a room with desks and chairs set out in rows. Once settled into a chair, the mistress spoke to her gently.
“My name is Miss Ferrars,” she said. “Suppose we start with you telling me your name, and we take it from there.”
“It’s Vikki,” the new girl said quietly.
“Short for Victoria I suppose. Well Victoria, I want to know just what you were up to at Dover, and where you thought you were going. I and want to know now.”

Well we are still in Christmastide. Perhaps they should be the Christmas Drabblers rather than Advent.

Christmas now lasts in the church's year until Candlemas, the 2 Feb.

Just so long as now we're in Lent we don't have to abstain from having new drabbles.... or the drabblers abstain from writing them Shocked
