Happy Advent Moiser30! Sorry about the dodgy rhymes...

O come, O come, Joey Bettany!
And welcome new girls properly
With cream cakes, lemon biscuits and advice
Until the Chalet School suffice.
Rejoice! Rejoice! The Spirit of the School
Shall grow in thee, new girls all!

O come, Our One and Only, free
Margot from Satan's tyranny
From deadly faults the triplets keep
And Ted warn off from previous sins deep.
Rejoice! Rejoice! The Spirit of the School
Shall grow in thee, new girls all.

O come, Thou Maynards, come and cheer
Ruey’s house by Thine advent here
Hang up some curtains, paint the floor
Brush hair, buy clothes, and a-adopt three more.
Rejoice! Rejoice! The Spirit of the School
Shall grow in thee, new girls all.

Madge Bettany, with Joey cuddled to her side, looked around the Mensches’ salon contentedly. It was wonderful to get right away from the Chalet, to have the kindly Frau Mensch fuss round her with extra shawls, send her up to a huge white bed, decide what the day’s program was going to be... She loved her school and was desperately proud of it, she loved every one of the girls in her care, and she was delighted by how healthy and cheerful her little sister was – but oh, she did get so tired during the term! The strain of being entirely responsible for a whole schoolful of girls in a foreign country for months at a time, the knowledge that she had to make a success of it for Joey’s sake, being so far away from her twin, the terrifying illnesses when she thought she would lose Joey, the occasional nights when she woke up wondering if this had all been a horrible mistake and she ought never to imagined that she, Madge Bettany, could move out to a lake in Austria and earn her living running a school… But all the anxiety of the last year was slipping away in the brilliance of the Christmas tree, the beautiful music Gottfried was making, and the blissful expression on the face of her baby sister.

She remembered herself, younger than Joey was now, scurrying into the kitchen to watch the preparation of Christmas delicacies. She saw her Ayah, carefully heating up the special mould in the pan of oil, and then turning out handful upon handful of achappam – the beautiful rose cookies that they always ate at Christmas time. Dick had always lingered longer around the big bowls of kul-kuls, popping as many of the round and crispy treats into his mouth as he could before anyone noticed. There had been huge parties, full of laughing women sparkling with jewels, dozens of servants swiftly and quietly smoothing everything along, and no thought of any other life.

Madge sighed for a moment, thinking of the vast gulf between the much petted little girl looking forward to a future in which her only duty was to enjoy herself to the full, and the young woman who had to support three dependents by her own efforts, and whose only home was a small plain room in a boarding school. But she remembered the Speisesaal, lined with lively young girls in brown uniform, all thrilled to be attending her school – her school. She thought of Joey skiing enthusiastically; of the little Robin looking up at her trustingly; of the growing numbers of girls and the friendships with their families; of the joy brought by the Nativity Play, of a certain Dr. Russell, of a large empty chalet on an Austrian lakeside that had become a home for her, her family, and all the girls that were so happy to go to school there, and she thought that this was truly the most joyful Christmas she had ever had.

Apologies to our Indian members if the food is wrong - I used this site (http://anglo-indianfood.blogspot.com/), but I don't know how accurate it is...

That's lovely - and how realistic for Madge to have such doubts - she was really so very young to have all that responsibility.

Thanks Santa

What a lovely look at Madge and how she must have felt at the beginning; so realistic too. Pleased that she's having thoughts for a certain Doctor!

Thankyou Santa.

The Naming of CS Girls

The naming of girls is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a girl must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there’s the name that her family gave her,
Such as Mary, Gisela, Richenda or Jane,
Such as Frances or Barbara, Anne, Joan or Eva –
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names, if for Jo to use it
In bestselling books, is one of your aims:
Such as Yseult, Ghislaine, Roswitha and Sigrid –
But all of them sensible, everyday names.
But I tell you, a girl needs a name that’s particular
A short friendly nickname, made up by her chums
Else how can she keep up her head perpendicular,
When one of the Gang she finally becomes?
The names of this kind often come fairly pat,
Such as Copper, or Ronnie, or Robin, or Val
Such as Rickie, Griselda, or Solly, or Katt
Names that prove the good nature of the named gal.
But above and beyond all these sources of names,
There’s a name that is sacred, that comes from on high;
The name that Jo Maynard to new girls declaims
In the study before they can chance to feel shy.
When you notice a girl who has left sins behind her,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
Dear Joey has realized how to improve her
By the power, by the power, by the power of a name:
A magnificent magical
Magimagnificent
Attitude changing, miraculous Name.

O Captain my Captain! our wondrous trip is done,
The school has weathered every move, dolls houses have been won,
The San is near, the Jungfrau clear, CS girls all exulting,
While Hilda here takes hold the reins, your sister now consulting;
But O ! heart! heart! heart!
O the feistiness of old,
When in Tirol my Captain taught,
A young headmistress bold.

O Captain! my Captain! Come back and see the dorms;
Come back—twas you who built the school, who taught the first few forms,
For you bouquets and serenades, for you the girls are singing,
For you they call, the Old Girls all, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear mother!
The first true heart of gold,
It is some dream that you’re just sweet,
That young headmistress bold.

My Captain does not visit, her lips are pale and still;
My mother does not now take charge, she has no guts nor will;
The school is settled safe and sound, its growing pains are done;
From wondrous trip the CS comes, with worldwide prestige won;
Exult O staff, and ring O bells!
But I, little consoled,
Leaf through the books my Captain leads,
A young headmistress bold.
