05, 2007 4:32 pm — Jo,
Grizel and Juliet woke early and dressed quietly so as not to wake any of the
sleepers. The Chalet School Guide Company was camping at the Baumersee, their
first real camp after a term of short weekend camps. Those had been shared with
the Saint’s company, but this was just themselves. The three girls had decided
to go fishing to give the camp a special breakfast treat, and they walked
quietly down to the lake shore and climbed into one of the boats that had been
provided for their use. Juliet rowed them out into the middle of the lake, and
they dropped their lines over the side. Presently first one and then another had
a catch, and before long one of the baskets they had taken with them was full.
As they fished, they ate the bread and drank the coffee that they had brought
out with them, thus freeing up another basket for their catch. From time to time
they moved the boat, finding a different place and more fish. “I think we
must have enough now,” said Jo after a time. “There’s no more room in any of the
baskets, and we don’t want to waste any.” “I don’t think there’s any chance
of that Jo,” laughed Juliet. “There’s plenty for everyone, and I’m sure that
Evvy and Corney at least will go for any second helpings that might be offered.”
“They won’t be the only ones,” laughed Grizel. “I might myself.” “Let’s
try one more spot,” said Juliet. “That flat dark place over there looks good.”
They sculled the little boat to the place she pointed out, and lowered the
lines again. There was silence for a few minutes, though sundry noises from the
shore suggested that some of the guides were moving. They all caught some fish,
and then Juliet cast her line for the final time. “I’ve got something big,”
she said excitedly. “Much heavier than any of the others we’ve caught.”
“Maybe it’s a pike. Aren’t there supposed to be pike in here?” replied
Grizel. “Give me a hand you two. It’s too heavy for me to manage,” said
Juliet, panting a bit. Carefully they moved round so that they could all
grip the long line, and then they pulled together. There was certainly something
very heavy on the end of the line. “I don’t think this is any fish,” panted
Jo as they pulled. Something swam into view deep in the water, and they
pulled harder and harder. As it neared the surface Juliet screamed and let go of
the line, the others echoing her. then they pulled as hard as they could for the
shore. Once there, both Jo and Juliet were violently sick, and Grizel looked as
though she wanted to follow suit. Miss Wilson hurried over to them. “Girls!
What ever is the matter?” she demanded. “We caught something,” gasped
Grizel, as the only one capable of saying anything. “It was heavy so we all
helped to pull. Oh! Miss Wilson, it was a body! It was wearing guide uniform,
and I knew the face!”

05, 2007 7:14 pm — Jack
Maynard knew he was going to marry Jo. He had known it from the first time he
met her when she was only 14. Of course he had hidden this well, he knew that if
Russell thought he fancied his schoolgirl sister-in-law then he would be out of
a job in very short order, but he had bided his time and seen off all his rivals
so far, in one way or another without Joey or the Russell's suspecting a thing.
This was make or break for him really. His brother would inherit the
family home and while he would have some legacy he didn't expect it to be enough
to live in the style he was determined to become accustomed to, nor to fund the
size of family he expected his future wife to bear him. Joey, as the bosses
sister-in-law was an ideal partner to ensure his status at the San and to
provide a large family. There were the twins he wanted in her family as well as
his, so at least one multiple birth could be expected, more if his experiments
went according to plan.
The fact that Joey had no intention of marrying
or having children was not something he was concerned with. He fully expected
her to grow out of that, and if not, well, there were things he could do to
ensure she would be more that thankful to accept his proposal and to see him as
her gallant rescuer to boot. It would help if she saw him as a hero not as
someone she had to marry, life would be so much easier with a compliant Joey.
Not that he had any intention of letting her get in his way.

05, 2007 9:27 pm — When the
call came through for him Jack Maynard cursed quietly before hiding his portable
ham radio in his desk. This could be bad, very bad. Thank goodness he had
someone on his side there, someone who could be relied upon to cover things up.
They understood one another, he and she. They’d recognised kindred spirits
almost immediately, recognised that they had to work outside of ‘normal society’
to get what they wanted in life. He’d given a few ideas and suggestions to his
collaborator who assured him she would be able to cover everything up. Luckily
she was very efficient and when he visited the camp along with Jem Russell the
following week it was to hear that the girls had hooked an artist’s mannequin.
He had wondered at the time just how much the three involved had been drugged
but knew his partner was very efficient. She’d even smoothed things over with
the local villagers – they were very happy with the money. Both he and she were
very satisfied – everything was going well.
Years later – more than
twenty years later – Jack thought back to those early days. They had been very
lucky then, lucky that she had been on the spot and had been able to cover
everything up. In the intervening years they had become far more efficient. Jack
had all he wanted, he had Joey and the San, a large family and even,
unexpectedly, the Maynard family home. And what of his fellow conspirator? He
had wondered once why she’d never actually pushed further and gone for the top
spot. He knew that had been her intention during the War, knew that she had
meant the accident to be fatal. But she had explained, having the number two
post meant far less work and far less responsibility - for only a little less
salary - a shortfall that was more than made up by the amount the two of them
they were skimming off the profits from the School and the San. They were both
content.
Just recently there had been a moment of panic when Joey had
announced a reunion and a mystery guest – but, between them, they had managed to
engage someone who could impersonate Mollie – after all no-one had seen her for
more than twenty years so any differences could be explained that way. Getting
rid of his older sister back in Austria was the best thing they could have done
– especially as everyone thought she’d returned to England before getting
married and emigrating. She had thought she was attending the Guide Camp – hence
the uniform. But she was the only one who had ever seen through both Jack and
Nell and she had to be disposed of, quickly. It had been bad luck that those
three girls had managed to hook her body before the pike had done their job –
but luckily Nell had been on the spot. Life was good.
