Jo Maynard sighed. Finding a replacement for Rosli, who had decided to get married and leave the Maynards in the lurch, was proving to be a lot more difficult than she had expected. No one wanted to work up in the Platz for the money that the Maynards could afford to pay. It was too cut off for most young people who wanted the bright lights of Interlaken on their time off.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do Jack,” she said. “We need the help. Anna can’t do both jobs, and my writing is suffering.”
“Pray for a miracle I should think,” replied Jack, who wasn’t really interested in his wife’s domestic arrangements, so long as the home ran efficiently and the kids were looked after properly.
“You could have something there. We’ve had nothing from the agency except a suggestion to pay more, which we just can’t afford.”
That night Jo got down on her knees and prayed hard for the miracle she needed. She arose feeling a lot better - almost confident that something would come of her prayers - and got into bed beside Jack.
It was three days later that something unexpected happened.
She was out in the garden playing with the twins when she caught something out of the corner of her eye. A speck in the sky moving fast towards her end of the Platz. It wasn’t a bird, it was the wrong shape and the movement was wrong. She stood and stared for a moment, then shrugged. It wasn’t anything to do with her, and the twins were demanding her attention.
Ten minutes later Anna came out into the garden, looking a little bemused.
“If you please, there is a lady to see you. She said that you were expecting her.”
“I’m not expecting anyone,” said Jo. “I’ll come and see who it is. Keep an eye on the twins will you Anna?”
When Jo entered the salon she found a very unusual person waiting for her. She was dressed like someone out of the last century, with a long dress and coat that reached to her ankles. She was wearing a black hat with flowers round the brim, and a rolled up black umbrella and a small suitcase stood by her chair.
“Good afternoon,” said Jo. “Anna said that I was expecting you, but I’m afraid she must have misunderstood.”
“Good afternoon Mrs Maynard. Anna was perfectly right, you are expecting me, or you should be. You asked for someone to help with your children did you not?”
“I did. But I’ve had no response to my advertisements.”
“I have come, so there is no need for any more worrying. My name is Mary Poppins.”

I realised that it was Mary Poppins. But she'll fly out again when the wind changes, won't she? Then what will happen?

Thanks, Advent Drabblers! Very Happy

Jack was curious. There was a definate mettalic smell about. Something wasn't right, and that whoosing sound wasn't produced by anything on the Platz that she had heard before. Whatever it was she was determined to find out, and to find out before anyone else came along and forbade it.

She had peered into the various garages, but the few staff cars were all in their correct places and none of them looked to have been moved that day. She moved from there for a sneaky peak into the boiler room. There was something odd there. She moved a little closer, pulling the door to behind her in case anyone passed by.

“What on earth...,” she stopped, puzzled and bent down for a closer look. In a dark corner of the room was a pile of what she had thought were sheets of metal, but when she bent for a closer look it was unlike any metal she had seen before. There was a sheen to it which caught the light, and it was panneled with some odd circular bumps in a regular pattern on each pannel. She looked at it for a few minutes, tried to take a scrapping of it and found she couldn't and stood up to see if there was anything else hidden in the boiler room. Behind a toolrack on the other side of the room she noticed a tall, dark, box and went to look. To her astonishment it was an old London Police box. This was confusing to say the least, but it did not seem important, whilst a police box was the last thing she would have expected to find in the boiler room she didn't see how it could be connected with the weird smell or the strange noise.

There was a whirring, gliding noise behind her. As she whirled round to see what it was, a cold harsh voice came from a shape moving towards her.
“Intruder, Intruder.”
“Extermina...”

A hand grabbed her and yanked her into the police box.
“What a stupid thing to do,” she heard.

Jack looked around.
“It's bigger inside than I would have thought.”

That same voice sighed, "You know, one day, someone's going to say something really original when they enter the TARDIS," it continued sarcastically, "and then the Universe will implode on itself."

Jack Lambert started across at the speaker; she saw a tall man, very aristocratic with a shock of pure white hair. He was wearing rather old fashioned dress, with all sorts of fancies and frills that Jack immediately shied away from. She stared.

The man clucked impatiently, "Well, aren't you going to say something?"

"What did you want me to say?" Jack asked.

The man didn't answer but instead mused to himself while leaning across a strange cylinder in the centre of the room, "Now come on, old girl, I said Switzerland, late 1950's, not England."

"Em, excuse me?"

"Yes, what is it?"

"This is Switzerland, there's an English girls school up here though."

"Ah, that explains it, makes a change, normally she manages to mess up something," he looked across, "and who are you, my dear?"

"I'm Jack," Jack replied, "short for Jacynth, before you ask."

"Oh I wasn't about to ask, Jack," the man replied, "tried that once on Alpha Centuri Seven - took the man three days to finish telling me his full name."

"Oh," Jack was not quite sure that she had heard him correctly, "excuse me sir? Did you say Alpha Centuri Seven?"

"Did I? Yes I suppose I must have - definitely not Alpha Centuri Six - that's just radioactive slime now, has been every since the Daleks took over...oh and that reminds me," he strode across to the door and yanked it open. Just outside glided the weird looking sheets of metal with the bumps in. Except this time they suddenly looked menacing as a stick on the top swivelled round to glare at the two of them.

The cold, harsh and, Jack realised, metallic voice spoke again, "Doctor? You must die!"

The man shook his head as he held out a strange metal rod which emitted a shrill whine. The object suddenly stopped moving and there was a thump as it crashed to the ground, the man looked across triumphantly toward Jack, "There, see? A perfect way to fight Daleks - if only I knew how to replicate it."

Jack suddenly looked interested, "But surely, Sir, if something has been made, then you should be able to figure out how to reproduce it?"

"You would think so, wouldn't you?" The man said with some chagrin, "but I'm not very mechanically minded," he paused and looked over at Jack, "are you?"

"Well, yes sir, I'm afraid I am."

"Hmmm," the man stopped, "might be able to help each other there," he said, "but first, I need to find a Mrs Josephine Maynard."

"Mrs Maynard? She lives very near here, I can take you."

"Splendid."

A short time later saw the two knocking at the front door of Freudesheim; as Joey Maynard opened the door the man spoke quickly, "I'm the Doctor, madam, I'm here about your new maidservant."

"Mary? Oh but she's wonder, the best we've every had. The children love her and Anna says she feels twenty years younger because Mary has taken over so many of her duties," Joey was frankly gushing here, her expression suddenly changed, "I say, you're not going to take her away, are you?"

"I just need to speak to her, ma'am," the man said firmly.

"And you're a doctor?"

"I am The Doctor."

"Doctor who?"

"Yes, that's correct."

Thoroughly puzzled Joey disappeared in search of Mary, Jack looked over at the Doctor, "Shouldn't it be Doctor Whom?"

"Good grief no, where do you get such notions?"

Before anything further could be said Joey returned with Mary Poppins, the Doctor smiled, "Romana, what are you doing here?"

'Mary' had gone rather pale, "Doctor? Is that you?"

"Well of course it is," the Doctor said impatiently, "who else could it...oh, the body," he looked down at himself, "what incarnation did you know?"

"Fourth."

"Hmmm, this is the third, not a bad body, not so flamboyant as that other fellow."

"But surely this is a paradox, isn't it? I mean you didn't know that you'd already met me when I first met you."

Jack and Joey looked at each other, each absolutely certain that the sentence couldn't possibly have made sense.

"The Time Lords needed to get in contact, they weren't happy about you being here - I was the closest incarnation."

"The Time Lords? But they're all dead now aren't they?

"Well, technically, in the far distant future, but even so they were worried about why you were here."

"I just fancied some field research," Romana explained, "I read this book about Mary Poppins and thought it would be a wonderful way to blend in with a prominent family - it's great fun."

"Yes," the Doctor sighed, "oh well, I suppose I can tell Gallifrey that I couldn't find you. Just don't interfere too much, will you?"

"Of course not, Doctor," 'Mary' said, her fingers firmly crossed behind her back - Joey saw this and bit her lip to stop herself calling out.

On the way back to his Tardis the Doctor looked across at Jack, "So, you like taking things apart and putting them together, do you?"

"Yes Doctor," Jack smiled, then her expression darkened slightly and she continued, "but it's not really the 'done thing' for a woman of my class."

"Ah, well in that case, Jack, I might have a proposition for you..."
