Joey Bettany was having a wonderful Christmas, her first since she and Madge had moved to Austria. They were staying with the Mensch family, and were now on their way to ski under the stars. Joey was so excited that she could hardly keep still, though she obeyed her sisters warning look, and managed to stop fidgeting until they reached their destination. Great lights had been fixed up around the area so that everyone could see properly, but outside the lit area all was dark and mysterious. Skiing was as much fun as Joey had thought, but far tiring. especially as she kept falling over. Finally she stopped for a breather, and Gottfried Mensch took her over to a stall where hot drinks were being sold. It was as she was standing sipping the hot coffee that she noticed something odd.
“Gottfried, what’s that little building over there?” she asked, pointing to a little hut that was almost hidden in the nearby trees.
“One of the little shrines I think liebling,” replied Gottfried. “Though I don’t think I’d noticed it before. Why did you want to know?”
“It’s just that someone I thought I’d recognised just went in there,” said Joey. “But if it’s a shrine then there’s no reason why she shouldn’t.”
Gottfried nodded and looked away, but Joey went on watching the little building. The door opened again and the figure came out, looking about her as if she didn’t want to be seen. Joey knew then that she’d been right, she did know this person. It was Frau Berlin, she was sure, but behaving in a most mysterious way. She slipped through the crowds in a way that defied her bulk, moving lightly over the snow. Then Joey noticed that a man was following her, and became even more intrigued. The man had light brown hair, and looked to Joey to be English rather than Austrian. Frau Berlin passed close to Joey, but didn’t seem to recognise her. The man stopped near her as he was approached by another woman, fair haired and stern looking.
“Have you found out what she’s doing Adam? And what on earth is the significance of that hut? She keeps going back to it.”
“Give us a chance Ros. Why don’t you go and look at the place while I keep an eye on the woman?”
Joey was sure that they hadn’t realised that she could hear and understand them, but she was getting more and more interested in what was happening. As Ros moved away in the direction of the shrine Joey followed her quietly. They reached the shrine, and Ros pushed at the door. It didn’t move, and she pulled a bunch of what looked to Joey like keys out of her pocket and bent to the lock. Something seemed to work, and the door swung open enough to let her slip through. Joey crept up to the door and tried to see in, but it had swung to just enough to stop her seeing anything at all. So she gave way to temptation and pushed it open. Stepping inside she gasped, for it was certainly not a shrine. In fact inside was far bigger than she’d expected, a place bigger than the whole of the chalet School, she thought in amazement. Some sort of machine occupied the middle, with a tower reaching up to the roof. Lights were flashing on the machine, and Ros was examining them intently. Then a violent shove from behind propelled her into the room, and she came to a halt quite close to the odd machine. When she turned around she saw Frau Berlin holding the man Adam in a most uncomfortable grip.
“Well!” she said, with no trace of the heavy German accent that Joey was expecting. “We seem to have a nest of nosey parkers, don’t we? You’ve seen more than is good for you, so now you suffer the consequences.”
“Who are you?” asked Joey, feeling a bit scared now.
Frau Berlin smiled the most unpleasant smile that Joey had ever seen. “I am the Master,” she said.

Hilda Annersley looked sternly at the blonde girl sat on the other side of the desk.
“It does not matter how many so called Vampires you slay, when in this school you are still expected to do all your preparation and to attend all your classes. You are also expected to remain in your dormitory each night and not to climb out of the window.”
The girl looked at her, slightly puzzled. She knew that people had odd reactions to vampires, and there were people who didn't believe she was a slayer, but this calm expectation that school was more important was a new one.
“Miss Annersley, are you feeling ok? Should I get my friend Willow to cast a calming spell? She's getting quite good now, there shouldn't be any nasty side effects, well apart from a tendancy to chat to atractive men, but who cares about that. The main thing is you must remember never to invite them in, not till you know anyway.”
“Know what,” Miss Annersley had lost the track of this conversation a little.
“Know that they aren't vampires of course. Do you have any weapons in school? In the library maybe?”
“Why would we have weapons in the library?”
“Best place to keep them, they resonate with the books. You do have a library don't you, I'm sure Giles will expect one.”
“Giles?”
“My watcher.”
“Well it strikes me you need watching. I'd rather like to meet this Giles.”
“Oh he will be around. I'm sure he would like to meet you as well, he will probably bring you a jar of coffee sometime soon.”

Coffee in jars, this was new to Miss Annersley, but then so much about Buffy Summers was new to Miss Annersley. Rather dazed she sent the girl away with rep to learn and sat back. In all her many years at the school she had never met a girl who ignored her quite as easily as Buffy did, nor one who could leave her speechless as often. Even the fabled Mary-Lou couldn't do it quite as often. She leaned back in her chair and shut her eyes, this term was making her head ache. Then with a shiver she opened them. The temperature had suddenly dropped.

No wonder, somehow there was someone else in the room with her. A dark figure in tall black robes.
“Who are you?”
“YOU DON'T RECOGNISE ME? PEOPLE USUALLY DO?”
“Well obviously you look like an anthromorphic representation of death, but...”
“THAT IS RIGHT”
“Well in that case shouldn't you be holding”
“THIS” the dark figure swung a scythe that seemed to cut the very air in two.
“Who have you come for?” Miss Annersley queried, rather weakly.
“WELL, IT ISN'T QUITE THAT SIMPLE” and the figure reached into his robes and started bringing out hourglasses until the desk was quite full of them.

The Head watched in silence as the figure continued to bring more and more hourglasses out to place on her desk. She noted that the hourglasses were all different sizes but did not comment until the figure had finished then, somewhat faintly she asked, "Any more?"

Death obediently checked through his robes and, after some searching brought out one more hourglass and placed it on the desk. There was silence for a time then he spoke, "AS YOU CAN SEE THESE HOURGLASSES ARE SOMEWHAT UNUSUAL."

"More unusual than the fact that I'm sitting opposite a seven foot tall representation of Death?"

"WELL, NOT QUITE AS UNUSUAL AS THAT, I GRANT YOU," Death said rather distractedly, "BUT, EVEN SO, THIS IS STRANGE, LOOK CLOSELY AT THE HOURGLASSES."

Miss Annersly obeyed, not sure exactly what she was searching for then suddenly gave a small exclamation, "There are a number of hourglasses with the same name!" she said.

"EXACTLY," a small firecracker lit up one of Death's sapphire blue eyes and, although clearly impossible, he appeared to smile.

"But how is that possible?" Miss Annersley asked, "I was under the impression that everyone had just the one life-timer."

"THEY DO, ORDINARILY," Death agreed, "HOWEVER ALMOST EVERYONE HERE HAS MORE THAN ONE TIMER - AS THOUGH NEARLY EVERYONE HERE HAD FACED ME ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION. I BELIEVE IT IS THE REASON WHY SO MANY DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS VISIT HERE."

"What do you mean, visit here?"

"I MEAN THAT AT ANY TIME, DAY OR NIGHT, THE CHALET SCHOOL CAN BE VISITED BY PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT REALITIES. IT'S THE REASON WHY YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A REAL-LIFE VAMPIRE HUNTER IN YOUR SCHOOL..."

"you mean Buffy is hunting real vampires?" Miss Annersley sounded surprised, "I thought she was just referring to Mr Denny - he's more Gothic than Byron."

"BUFFY, YES," Death replied, "AND ANY NUMBER OF OTHERS - FOR INSTANCE, ONE OF YOUR EARLIEST PUPILS HAS HER OWN SHELF OF TIMERS," he indicated one row and Hilda Annersley looked more closely,

"Joey? Well that explains things," she picked up one of the smaller timers, "the Master I know - one of Doctor Who's enemies I believe?" At the look of astonishment from Death she sought to explain,"I've only watched a couple of episodes, it's not as if I would actually like something so modern."

"I BELIEVE YOU, MISS ANNERSLEY," Death said solemnly, his tone saying exactly the opposite.

Hilda Annersley attempted to protest further but decided to try and bypass it, "Well who are these two then? Adam and Ros?"

"FROM A POPULAR SHOW ABOUT SPIES," Death replied, "THE DIMENSIONS ARE VERY THIN HERE. THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE, TO ALLOW MY MANIFESTATION."

"I'm tempted to say that you are nothing more than my imagination," Hilda Annersley said with a smile, "an undigested piece of cheese, if you will. But I seriously doubt even Charles Dickens would agree with me."

"NO, MISS ANNERSLEY, THIS IS NOT A CHRISTMAS CAROL," Death replied, "ALTHOUGH I DID HAVE A BIT PART IN THAT TOO." One of the sapphire lights in Death's eye sockets flickered off and then back on as Death winked at the Head.

"So this School attracts characters from different dimensions?"

"THAT IS CORRECT."

"And you are here because?"

Death sat back, "CURIOSITY," he admitted, "AS I SAID, THERE ARE NOT MANY DIMENSIONS WHERE I CAN APPEAR QUITE SO EASILY. AND I WAS VERY CURIOUS ABOUT YOU, MISS ANNERSLEY."

"Me? Why should you be curious about me?"

"BECAUSE YOU ARE THE ONE PERSON IN THIS DIMENSION FOR WHOM I DO NOT HAVE AN HOURGLASS," Death replied, "NOT EVEN ONE."

Rejoiced in Hilda taking it all in her stride (I do so like Death) and am very keen on her being immortal (well, obviously she is ...)

Well I knew half the crossovers. Loved seeing Death there, he's one of my favourites from the Discworld.

And Miss Annersley doesn't have an hourglass? Interesting.

Thanks, Advent Drabblers. I did not recognise any of the characters, but I definitely enjoyed reading each of the parts!
