Post subject:  Whose Brain? (9/8 - complete!)

Miss Annersley put the phone down, scribbled a few notes on the top sheet of the pile of papers she’d been referring to, and filed them away carefully. She glanced at the pretty Swiss clock on the wall and found that she still had fifteen minutes before her prospective pupil arrived in the company of her father. She rose and opened the door that connected with her secretary’s office.

“Are you in a good place to take a quick breather, Rosalie?”

Rosalie looked up and dropped the letter she was reading with a thankful sigh.

“I’m always in a good place to take a breather.”

“Well, once a week or so you are. Come on. We’ll take a stroll around the gardens. I’ve got a parent coming in fifteen minutes and I’ve been stewing over paperwork all morning.”

“You can’t tell me anything about paperwork.” Rosalie paused to inhale the fresh spring air. Then, as they set off around the side of the house towards the shrubbery, she turned back to the Head, her face suddenly serious. “We’ve had another letter from Mr. and Mrs. Kirk, I’m afraid. They’re taking Alice away at the end of term.”

Hilda let out a deep sigh.

“It’s very unfortunate, but after all they’ve said, I’m not entirely surprised. Is there anything we can do, do you think?”

“Send them our best wishes,” said Rosalie, shrugging. “No. I’ll show it to you later on. The gist is that she’s not the same child she was when she left home, and they don’t like it. They’re very nice about it, but they want her back.”

“Well, I’ll ring them up this afternoon and have a chat. I suppose we can’t satisfy every parent, however hard we try.”

“No.” Rosalie glanced at her sideways, her pretty face anxious. “It’s rather an odd reason to be unhappy with a school, though.”

Hilda, finding herself quite unable to disagree with this, said nothing. The school had always had a good reputation for discipline, and over the last three years they had become well-known for helping troublesome children to become sensible, responsible members of the school community. Even Hilda wasn’t really sure what had happened. It was as though the ethos of the school had begun to seep into the girls, changing them almost before her eyes.

“It’s strange that some parents don’t seem to like us helping their children,” she said, half to herself. “Never mind. Not every school can be right for every child, and if they think Alice will do better somewhere else, they’re probably right. I’d better go back in, Rosalie. Mr. Smith and his daughter are due any moment now.”

Even as she sat down at her desk, there was a knock at the door, and Miggi, the maid, announced Mr. Smith and his daughter. Hilda smiled at them.

“Good morning,” she said, rising and moving towards them. “My name is Hilda Annersley, Headmistress of the Chalet School. You must be Mr. Smith and Amy.”

“Yes, that’s us,” said the man, with a rather absent-minded smile, his eyes scanning the room swiftly. She couldn’t help noticing his slightly eccentric appearance: the only man she knew who sported a bow-tie was Tristan Denny, but even he did not wear it with quite such aplomb as Mr. Smith. Embarrassed, she realised that he had seen her looking at it, but he only smiled, his eyes lighting up. “Do you like my bow-tie? See – I told you, Amy. Bow-ties are cool.”

Not entirely sure what to say to this, Hilda pretended not to notice Amy rolling her eyes and changed the subject.

“Would you like coffee or tea? Tea? Miggi, would you bring tea for the three of us, please? Thank you.” As the door closed behind the maid, she turned back to the Smiths. “Please, won’t you sit down?”

Mr. Smith gave her a severe look.

“Not yet, Miss Annersley,” he said. “First, I’d like you to tell me where you keep your brain.”

Science fiction themed crossover? Sounds good. And the Doctor's last line reminds me of the bit in HP 2 where Mr Weasley tells his children never to trust something if you can't see where it keeps its brain.

Post subject:  Re: Whose Brain?

Thanks for all the comments. Sorry, there's no Kirk connection - it was just the first name that came into my head (well, apart from Shufflebottom, but I discarded that...)

“This is very – unusual,” said Mr. Smith, peering so closely at the gently pulsating organ that his nose almost touched it. He narrowed his eyes, sniffed a few times, then prodded it and licked the tip of his finger.

“You’re disgusting,” said Amy.

“I know. Don’t worry, I’m getting used to it.” He straightened up and looked at Miss Annersley. “How long have you had this?”

“About three years.” Hilda hoped that he wouldn’t spend too long looking at the brain. Mittagessen was in half an hour and she needed to speak to Miss Wilson about some of the arrangements for the Sale some time that afternoon. Still, she had been Headmistress long enough to know that parents could be fascinated by the strangest things.

“And where did it come from?” He looked at her, his brow creased “Where did you get it?”

“It was a gift,” said the Head. “Rather an unusual one, I know, but I have a colleague and close friend who is a scientist and she has spent many hours studying it.”

“Yes, I’m sure she has,” he murmured. He pulled a small metal device out of his pocket and pointed it at the organ. It emitted a peculiar sound and a blue light. Mr. Smith frowned slightly before switching the thing off.

“What is it, Doc – I mean, Dad?” said Amy. Hilda noticed her pleasant Scottish accent which, a second later, added itself to the list of peculiar things about her future pupil, since her father seemed not to have the slightest trace of one.

“I’m not sure yet,” he said slowly. “Well, except that it’s a live and fully functional human brain preserved in – well, air, apparently. Now,” he gave Hilda a look more penetrating than any she had ever seen before, even when practising in the mirror. “Why would someone give the Headmistress of an expensive girls’ boarding school – Swiss – a living brain?”

“It’s interesting?” suggested Hilda.

“Yes,” agreed Mr. Smith, tapping the metal device against his chin. “But only if you’re a bit odd – or me, of course. Didn’t you ever wonder how it was being kept alive?”

“I – well, I’m no scientist, but Jack Maynard, who gave it to us, said something about a life-support machine of sorts.”

“Well, yes. That thing it’s standing on is keeping it alive. But the Earth isn’t supposed to have this technology for another three hundred years. Who did you say gave it to you?”

“Doctor Maynard, the Head of the Sanatorium at the other end of the Platz. His wife was a pupil of the school. Really, Mr. Smith, this is all very interesting, but I’d like to show you at least some of the School before Mittagessen. We’ve just got time to see a few of the form rooms – perhaps we might continue this discussion later.”

Mr. Smith looked at her for a moment, then, with a decisive movement, pushed the metal device back into his pocket and strode towards the door.

“All right. Good idea. And – um – we’ll be eating lunch with the School, didn’t you say?”

“That’s right. It will give you an idea of how we provide for the girls, and of course a feeling for the atmosphere of the School.”

“Atmosphere of the School. Good. I’m looking forward to that,” he said, half to himself. Hilda, with an odd feeling that control of the situation was slipping from her grasp, trotted after him – something she had not done for quite some time.

Thanks for the comments. :D

It had been all right at first. The Prefects had, of course, been quietly warned that there would be a visitor at Mittagessen and were particularly vigilant about misbehaviour. Not that anything really bad ever happened these days – just the usual Middles’ mischief. She had sent Amy over to the Sixth Form table so that she could get to know the girls, and from what she could see they were hanging on Amy’s every word. And now that Amy was out of the way, she could talk to Mr. Smith about something that had been troubling her for a while now.

“Mr. Smith,” she said cautiously, for it was a delicate issue.

“Yes?” He had been peering round the Speisesaal, watching different groups of girls here and there, a slight frown on his face. Now he turned politely to the Head. “Actually, I was wondering – this fish is delicious, but do you have any custard?”

The carefully worded question floated off the end of Hilda’s tongue and into the realms of forgotten speeches.

“I – beg your pardon?”

“Custard. I was wondering whether you had any. To go with the fish, you know.”

Hilda began to wonder whether she had gone to sleep. Or mad. Still, the man was a visitor, and he might send his daughter to the Chalet School. She caught the maid’s eye and made the request in a low voice. Suzette’s eyes widened, but since her employer merely shrugged and rolled her eyes slightly she went off to the kitchen, where the demand caused great hilarity.

When he had poured the custard over the fish and begun happily eating it – apparently oblivious of the reactions of those sitting around him – Hilda returned, a little ragged, to the question she had wanted to ask. Unfortunately the delicate phrasing had now escaped her and it came out a little more bluntly than she had intended.

“I can’t help being surprised, Mr. Smith, that you have a daughter who is so – well, you look a little young to have a daughter of her age.”

Well, at least she’d said it, even if it wasn’t in the most elegant way possible. Mr. Smith didn’t look offended, though he did seem a bit surprised.

“Do I?” he said, looking across at Amy, who had the look on her face that meant she wasn’t sure whether someone was kidding her or not. “Well, that’s because technically she isn’t actually my daughter.” He saw Hilda’s expression and hastily added, “She’s sort of adopted.”

“Oh, I see,” said Hilda, relieved.

“Anyway, I’m much older than I look,” Mr. Smith went on. “About a hundred and fifty or thereabouts. No – wait. Humans don’t live that long, do they?” He paused for thought. “Forty. I’m forty.”

“I see.” She supposed he was harmless, though a decided eccentric. And it was really Amy who mattered. She seemed to be getting on with the others like a house on fire, and Hilda could trust her girls not to like anyone unsuitable.

She could have coped with all of that. It was, admittedly, confusing and embarrassing, but she had dealt with other parents whose behaviour was not all it could be and had got on very well, especially once they saw the astounding effect even a few weeks at the Chalet School had on their children. But Mr. Smith was quite impervious to hints and seemed to have no connection with social customs or behavioural norms. When dessert had been served he had taken one mouthful and spat it back into his bowl.

“Ooh, pastry! Can’t bear pastry,” he’d said, pushing it away. “It’s like piles of dandruff all stuck together.” And with that, he had risen from the table and wandered off down the Speisesaal, pausing every now and again to talk to a girl or a maid, leaving the Staff table torn between horror and hysteria.

Hilda put her elbows on the table – the first time she had done so in twenty-three years – and rested her forehead on the palms of her hands.

Thanks for all the comments. :)

“This is Leafy dormitory,” said Hilda, opening the door. Mr. Smith peered in, gave the room a glance, and withdrew.

“Very nice,” he said. “Now let’s go and see Matron, shall we?”

But Hilda had decided that the best course of action was to treat Mr. Smith as though he was a naughty Middle. He’d responded very well when she had told him firmly but kindly that she would show him a couple of dormitories and then introduce him to Matron, had followed her peaceably up the stairs and nodded amiably to one or two girls they met on the way. So she raised her eyebrows and turned a frosty look on him.

“Each girl has her own cubicle,” she began, and found that Mr. Smith had already begun backing down the corridor as though trying to hurry her up. “Really, Mr. Smith,” she said in tones that would have caused a forest fire to shrink back with a damp fizzle. “I cannot help feeling that your attitude is somewhat unhelpful. How do you propose to judge the school if you refuse to take any interest in its workings?”

“Well, I certainly don’t intend to judge it on its sleeping arrangements,” he said with a lopsided smile. “Now, are you coming? I’ll understand if you’ve got better things to do.”

“I see you have forgotten that you do not know this school.” Hilda’s tone seemed to lower the temperature by a few more degrees.

“Oh, I can find the room, don’t worry. Down there, turn right, second left and it’s just along the corridor, yes?”

“Well – yes. But that’s beside the point.” Hilda found that she was talking to air. Mr. Smith was already vanishing down the corridor. Abandoning her dignity, Hilda took to her heels and ran after him, ignoring Jack Lambert, who stared at her with open mouth as she shot past.

By the time she reached Matron’s office, Mr. Smith was already seated on the edge of Gwynneth Lloyd’s desk and Gwynneth – how on Earth had he done that? Gwynneth was smiling at him, even laughing.

“Oh, I can deal with them all right,” she said as Hilda pushed the door open. “And most of it’s only mischief anyway. We haven’t had anything really nasty for – goodness – nearly three years, now. The last time was an incident of bullying, the term after the Maynard triplets left.”

“Three years,” said Mr. Smith slowly.

“Mr. Smith,” said Hilda impressively, then stopped, realising it would be superfluous to introduce them at this late date. Before she could think of anything else sensible to say, the door was flung open, and the tall, flame-haired Amy entered.

“There you are,” she said, flinging herself down into Gwynneth’s chair. “Ok, you were so right. No-one could possibly be that boring without something being wrong with their brain.”

But Mr. Smith didn’t seem to be listening. The sort of man who appeared incapable of standing still, he had been poking around Gwynneth’s possessions in a desultory manner. Now, however, he brought out something red from a stack in a corner.

“Why have I never thought of wearing one of these before?” he said and clapped the fez onto his head, gazing at his reflection in a small mirror with an air of great satisfaction. He turned back to Amy. “Sorry, you were saying?”

“I was saying you were right. Those girls are too good to be true.”

“I know,” said Mr. Smith, looking suddenly serious. “I just need to work out who’s doing it, how and why.”

“Mr. Smith,” said Hilda again. “Will you please tell me what is going on?”

“Oh, come along, Miss Annersley. I think we can drop all that now, don’t you?”

“Drop what?” Hilda, having felt that she’d got a slight grip on events, promptly lost it again.

“Well, you didn’t really think I was planning to send Amy to school here, did you?”

“No way am I going back to school,” said Amy, her eyes widening. “Specially here. No offence, Miss Annersley. It’s just that it’s a wee bit spooky.”

“Who are you?” said Hilda. It seemed the only thing she could say.

“I’m the Doctor, and this is Amy.”

“Oh, you’re a doctor.” Hilda felt suddenly relieved. She knew how to deal with doctors, although most of them weren’t quite as eccentric as this one. “Doctor Smith?”

“No, just the Doctor. Now, I want you to tell me everything you know about what’s been going on here.”

“Nothing’s going on,” said Hilda. She hadn’t felt this bewildered since they had first moved to Switzerland and she had somehow ended up in the Junior common room instead of the Sixth Form splashery three times in twenty minutes.

“Yes, there is,” said Amy, eyeing Mr – no, the Doctor – sternly. “You are wearing a fez. Why are you wearing a fez?”

“Fezes are cool. Told you I’d get another” said the Doctor, beaming at her. “Now, Miss Annersley, come along. There’s no point pretending any more.”

“But I’m not!”

The Doctor stared at her.

“You must know something. You’re keeping a live human brain in your study. Are you seriously trying to tell me you keep it just because it’s a bit strange?”

Hilda stared back at him, for once completely lost for words. She had never thought about why she kept the brain. Why would she? It was just an interesting thing that an old friend had donated to the school.

“I don’t understand why you’re so interested in it,” she said at last.

“I think she’s telling the truth, Doctor,” said Amy. “Isn’t there anyone else who could be behind all this?”

“Well, maybe. You’re right, she does look a bit confused. Oh, I know! Dr. Jack Maynard, the brain’s donor. What sort of a man is he, Miss Annersley? You know, that’s a terribly long name. Can I call you Hilda? – good. Now, Jack Maynard.”

“He’s the head of the sanatorium.” For some reason her voice seemed to be a few tones higher than usual. She wondered whether she was losing her mind.

“What’s that – a loony bin?” said Amy.

“It’s a hospital,” said Hilda, who was at least fairly sure of this. “And Jack Maynard is the head. He’s a very respectable man. How could he behind anything?”

“It’s always the people with the power,” said the Doctor. “But why’s he doing it? Where does he live, Hilda? I think we need to talk to Dr. Jack Maynard.”

“He isn’t here. He’s at a conference in Geneva and he won’t be back until tomorrow.”

“Ah, right. Well, never mind. It gives us time to work out what he’s up to, and then we can confront him.” He said the last words with a slight relish, as though he was looking forward to the moment.

Ten minutes later, Hilda, Gwynneth, Amy and the Doctor were gathered round the brain, all staring at it as though they expected it to leap off its stand and start doing the tango. Hilda felt disappointment mingling with her confusion and irritation.

“What’s it supposed to do?”

“I don’t know.” The Doctor was frowning at the brain. “Is this Maynard ambitious? Must be, if he’s head of a sanatorium. But you can’t get power in a girls’ school. What’s he after?”

“I don’t see why he has to be after anything,” said Hilda in plaintive tones. “Can’t he just have donated the brain because it’s interesting?”

“Well, yes, except that it’s using technology that you don’t have for another three hundred years to keep it alive. He must have got it from someone, and that someone isn’t from Earth.”

“Not from Earth?” said Gwynneth sharply. “What do you mean, Doctor?”

Since the Doctor was pointing a blue light from his metal device at the brain again, Amy replied.

“He’s talking about aliens.”

Hilda and Gwynneth looked at her, almost forgetting about the Doctor, who was now scanning the metal contraption the brain was resting on.

“Aliens,” said Hilda, in a deadly quiet voice.

“Yeah, there are loads of them out there. Hundreds of different worlds – you would not believe it.”

“And this thing is definitely alien,” said the Doctor. “It’s processing information from the brain in some way. But why? Why? Why?”

Hilda pulled herself together, summoned up all her Headmistressly forces, and spoke.

“That is enough!” she said. Her voice was like a whiplash, and the Doctor and Amy both jumped and looked at her like guilty Middles. “Before you do or say anything else, Doctor – or you, Amy – I demand that you tell us exactly what is going on.”

They stared at their feet.

“Yes, Miss Annersley,” they muttered.

Thanks for all the comments. :D

Even Hilda was surprised at her own success and, indeed, wasn’t entirely sure what to do with it. She settled for glaring at the miscreants until tears welled up in Amy’s eyes and even the Doctor poked at the carpet with his toe, not daring to look up into her icy face.

“Well, you see –” he began, when there was a knock at the door.

“Oh, Miss Annersley” said Rosalie Dene, entering. “I’m so sorry to interrupt, but –”

She jumped backwards as the Doctor suddenly bounded forward.

“Oh, of course!” He pointed his metal device at the brain again.

“What on Earth is that?” said Rosalie.

“Sonic screwdriver,” said the Doctor, putting it back in his pocket.

“Doctor!” said Hilda, dangerously.

“Oh, no!” He gave her his lopsided grin again. “That’s not going to work any more, because, you see, I know what’s going on. This thing’s not just a life support machine. It’s creating a low level telepathic field and it’s making people behave – differently.”

“But no-one’s behaving differently,” said Hilda, thoroughly bewildered.

“Really?” said the Doctor. “What about Alice Kirk?”

“What do you know about Alice?”

“Oh, I know plenty about Alice. You see, Amy and I met Alice’s parents this morning and they are not happy. Do you know what’s happened to her?”

“Nothing has,” said Hilda.

“The letter from her parents said she’d changed,” said Rosalie, clutching her files as though she thought the Doctor might leap forward and grab them from her. “They said she didn’t seem like the same girl she used to be.”

“Exactly!” The Doctor looked at her. “Sorry, who are you?”

“Oh,” said Hilda distractedly. “This is Rosalie Dene, the school secretary. Rosalie, this is the – the Doctor.”

“Doctor who?” Rosalie smiled at him.

“Just the Doctor. And you, Rosalie Dene, are absolutely right. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk are very upset, which is odd, because their daughter used to be a real handful. She was rude, she was disobedient and they could hardly control her. And now they’d give anything to have her back the way she was.”

“Some parents prefer their children naughty,” said Hilda tartly. “Yes, Alice was a problem at first – one of the naughtiest girls we’ve ever had. But whole ethos of the Chalet School is that no girl is ever too big a problem. Three or four weeks of firm but kind discipline and a strict routine, and she was like a new child.”

“Three or four weeks for one of the worst behaved children you’ve ever had in your school to become hard working and well-behaved? That doesn’t sound normal to me, Hilda.”

“My dear Doctor, most children respond to the school’s atmosphere within a week or two.”

“Oh come on,” said Amy. “That’s totally ridiculous. Kids don’t just change like that.”

Hilda hesitated.

“Well, I suppose the girls do seem to fit in much more quickly than they used to. Over the last few years our methods seem to have become more and more effective.”

“The last few years? How many?” demanded the Doctor.

“I don’t know. Three years, perhaps.”

“And when did Jack Maynard give you his brain? Sorry, I mean this brain. Obviously it’s not his brain – at least, I suppose it’s not.”

“I think he’s still using his,” she faltered. “He donated it about – about three years ago.”

“O-kay,” said Amy. “So, what’s this telepathic thingy, then?”

“A low level telepathic field. It’s influencing the girls’ behaviour. Making them turn into well-behaved, responsible people. Changing them.”

“But that’s preposterous,” said Hilda. “It can’t be anything to do with the brain. They just come, and they learn to be real Chalet School girls.”

Glad people are enjoying this!

“All right.” The Doctor slumped casually into Hilda’s big, antique chair, and put his feet up on the desk. He smiled at her lazily. “So what’s a ‘real Chalet School girl’?”

Hilda winced as Amy hoisted herself onto the desk and sat on top of a pile of important papers. However, catching sight of Rosalie’s expression – a mixture of amusement and confusion – she pulled herself together and answered the Doctor’s question.

“A Chalet girl is always kind and considerate. She thinks of others before herself and is always ready to help out when needed. She has an excellent sense of responsibility and can therefore be relied on to supervise others who are younger or less responsible, whether she is asked to or not. She is usually intelligent, but if not then she works hard to make up for this. She has a strong sense of honour, which means that she will never lie, cheat, steal, prevaricate or attempt to deceive anyone in any way. This means that entire forms can be left alone for up to an hour and be absolutely trusted to remain quiet and do the work they have been set without talking or communicating via notes – though making signs is acceptable, so long as they don’t disturb other members of the class. She may on occasion cause trouble, but this is not because she is bad. She may be young and thoughtless, in which case a stern talking-to will usually suffice. Or she may have been brought up among adults all her life, in which case it is only to be expected that she will treat everyone of any age as an equal – this is of course perfectly acceptable and, indeed, is to be encouraged, even though it can seem embarrassing, peculiar or inappropriate at the time. Alternatively, she may be naturally mischievous. This is quite all right up to a certain point. By the time a girl becomes a Senior Middle we expect her to have thrown off childish things, though of course a true Chalet girl remains childlike all her life. Younger mischief-makers are easily dealt with – a session in my study, being demoted for a few weeks, having to eat at the punishment table or losing order marks are all calculated to instil a sense that such behaviour is frowned upon but is allowed so long as it does not overstep the bounds of nice naughtiness. She is expected to make the most of her appearance but not to be proud of it or draw attention to it or artificially enhance it in any way. She never talks about boys in that way, though she may have male friends if she wishes to. She believes deeply, but is generally embarrassed if for any reason she has to speak of her faith. All the same, she knows exactly how to persuade anyone who doesn’t agree with her to alter their views. There are of course many other traits of the true Chalet girl, but these are the essentials we try to instil into the girls.”

She paused to draw breath and take a sip of water from the glass of water that was on her desk. She set it down on the windowsill, a little worried that the Doctor’s foot might tip it over. There was a silence.

“Um – did you want me to carry on?” she asked uncertainly, looking at the Doctor, who was gazing out of the window as though deep in thought. When he still didn’t reply, Amy looked round, then leaned over and twanged one of his braces. The Doctor jumped and hastily set his feet flat on the floor.

“Sorry, yes. Um – no, that’s fine, thanks. Right, so –” He looked at her, an amiably bemused expression on his face. “No, seriously, you don’t actually expect any girl to be like that, do you?”

“I pride myself on the fact that our pupils go out into the world with strong values and moral courage,” said Hilda, happily calling to mind one of her favourite paragraphs from the prospectus. “They all learn to be real Chalet girls and we rarely have a failure.”

“No wonder they were all so boring, then,” said Amy, picking up a paperweight with an exotically coloured butterfly inside and studying it with horrified interest. “I mean, with all that in their heads they can’t have space for anything interesting.”

“Please don’t break that paperweight,” said Hilda, unable to stop herself. “It was a gift from Mary-Lou Trelawney – an ex-pupil and, if I may say so, possibly the finest example of a Chalet girl we have ever had.” She gave a little sigh, remembering Mary-Lou. The Doctor’s eyes narrowed.

“What’s she doing now?” he asked.

“Oh, she died some years ago,” said Hilda. “I’d really rather not talk about it. It was extremely tragic and the whole school was devastated. We’ve never had another girl like her.” She sighed again, the light of her noble aims dying out of her face. “I suppose you’re right, Doctor. I never expected that others would reach Mary-Lou’s standard, but over the last three years, most of them have. It’s extraordinary, but I was so pleased by the success of our methods that I never really thought how unlikely it was.”

The Doctor smiled.

“Well done. You’ve realised you’ve got a problem – and I can help you solve it.”

He would have continued, but at that moment the door opened and a young man with a large nose and a small chin entered.

“You could have told me where you were going,” he complained.

“Rory!” said Amy, jumping off the desk and sending Hilda’s papers sliding to the floor. She flung her arms round the young man and planted the sort of kiss on his mouth that Hilda felt she really shouldn’t be watching. The Doctor, however, looked on with a complacent smile until eventually, growing bored, he interrupted.

“All right, breathe, you two.”

“Who is this?” said Hilda as they emerged, looking as though they had been away for weeks.

“This is Rory,” said Amy. “He is my lovely fiancé. Rory, this is Hilda, who is the Headmistress of the Chalet School. She’s brainwashing people, apparently.”

“No I’m not!” protested Hilda, outraged. “I had no idea that was what it did.”

“Come and have a look,” said the Doctor, motioning Rory forward. Rory bent forward, peering at the brain with an expression of horror and revulsion.

“But that’s a brain!” he said.

“Ooh, top marks to you,” said Amy. “Good thing you spotted that.”

Hilda found the Doctor at her elbow.

“Tell him to do something,” he said in a low voice. “Like you did me and Amy – go on.”

She looked at him doubtfully, then drew herself up to her full height.

“Rory!” she commanded. “Stand up straight and look at me this minute!”

Rory leapt as though he had been stung and stood rigidly to attention. After a minute he sagged, blinked, and looked confused.

“How does that work?” said Hilda, now quite unnerved.

“Like I said,” said the Doctor. “Low-level psychic field, repressing people’s ability to think for themselves and gently encouraging them to act and think in a certain way, which in this case involves an inordinate amount of respect for you, Hilda, as well as all the other things.”

“I wish it would work on certain members of staff, then,” said Hilda with quite a human smile.

“Not really strong enough,” said the Doctor. “It’ll only work on people with an open mind, which most adults haven’t got.”

“And that’s why it works on you three, I suppose,” said Rosalie, who was leaning against the wall, resting her chin on her files and looking interested.

“Well, yes.” The Doctor smiled.

“You sort of have to be open-minded, travelling with the Doctor,” said Amy. “So how do we stop it?”

“Oh, that’s easy.” The Doctor pointed his sonic screwdriver at the life-support machine. There was a metallic click and a small fizzle. “Of course, that doesn’t solve the problem of whose idea this was or why they thought it was such a good one.”

“I have to say,” said Rory with a slight frown. “That I can’t help wondering why you think it’s a good idea to wear a fez.”

“I wear a fez now,” said the Doctor.

He was obviously about to say more, but at that point the sound of a deep, loud gong rang out. Hilda glanced at her wrist-watch.

“Good heavens! It’s Abendessen already. Doctor, Amy, Rory, perhaps you’d like to join us.”

As they approached the Speisesaal Amy had expressed some anxiety about whether it was a good idea to expose Rory to the lustful gaze of two hundred schoolgirls. Hilda, a little shocked at the idea, saw on Rory’s face a mixture of horror and embarrassed pleasure. Amy’s fears turned out to be unfounded, however, since the girls showed no special interest in him. The Doctor, however, provoked some polite and unobtrusive talk, owing, Hilda suspected, to his somewhat unconventional attire.

“Well, he’s not that good looking,” he said when Amy commented on the lack of interest in Rory’s charms.

“Yeah, but girls that age – they’ll go for any guy they see, usually.”

“Oy!” said Rory. “That’s me you’re talking about.”

“I’m joking, plonker.” Amy hit him on the arm.

“She’s right, though,” said the Doctor, poking at his food with his fork as though checking it was safe to eat.

“You mean it’s that brain again?” Hilda’s face fell. “We have always tried to keep our girls young and innocent in thought.”

“Yes, but even so. Surely you must have had some trouble – before you had the brain, obviously.”

Hilda thought back to the incident with Marie von Eschenau during the school’s earliest years. Fortunately that affair had ended happily, but it had led at the time to some very awkward questions, especially from those younger girls who had seen more than they ought to have done. And she’d never been sure what Joan Baker’s form-mates had ended up learning. Once again, she had to admit, the Doctor was probably right.

He found the fez lying around in the last episode of the series and wore it because it's cool, like a bow tie. :) There was also a timey, wimey, wibbly, wobbly element to it because he was going back and forth in time, and he was wearing it when Rory saw him in the past.

“I’m sure Jack never meant anything by it,” said Hilda plaintively. “I mean, he has become a bit reclusive and peculiar since Joey said she was bored with him and went off to become a pop singer.”

“A pop singer?” said Amy with interest.

“Yes – she sings with another of our old girls, Grizel Cochrane, and they call themselves the Golden Girls.”

Amy’s jaw dropped.

“The Golden Girls? But they’re, like, classic! Rory and I went to their reunion gig a few years ago, and it was amazing. That was our first date,” she added, looking nostalgic.

“Yeah, sorry about that,” said Rory. “Though, to be fair, I didn’t know about the sequined catsuits beforehand.”

There was a brief silence. Rosalie and Hilda carefully avoided each other’s eyes and tried to think of the gaily jacketed covers of Joey’s schoolgirl stories.

“So, going back to Jack,” said the Doctor, taking pity on them.

“Yes,” said Hilda. “Do you really think he’s orchestrating this whole thing?”

“Well, even you must admit he’s become quite odd since – since his life changed,” said Rosalie. “And he’s always moaning that Joey only left him because she hadn’t been taught how to be a proper wife and mother.”

“That’s true,” said Hilda, thoughtfully. “He seems to think the school wasn’t quite so efficient in those days. Of course, in some ways the girls did have a lot more freedom.”

“We didn’t place so much emphasis on them all becoming real Chalet School girls, either.”

“No. But then, that really only came about after Mary-Lou – it was a phrase we barely used before her. But she so epitomised all of our most prized values and characteristics that it seemed to describe her perfectly.” She sighed. “Her death was a terrible loss to the world.”

“But he’s often said quite positive things about the way we’re running the school now,” said Rosalie, frowning. Hilda frowned even more, then looked at the Doctor, a light dawning in her face.

“I remember – he once made a comment about how at least the young doctors at the San now would have a better chance for happiness than he did.”

The Doctor, Rory and Amy exchanged glances. Hilda looked at them, horror building slowly in her mind.

“You mean –? she faltered.

“What?” said Rosalie, looking from one to the other.

There was a tap at the French doors. Rosalie and Hilda jumped and turned, even as the Doctor strode across to the doors and flung them open.

“Ah, hello!” he said, grasping the tall, fair man by the hand and pulling him into the room. “You’re Jack Maynard, aren’t you? I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.”

Jack tried to disengage his hand, which the Doctor was still shaking, in a polite manner, but in the end had to settle for wrenching it away.

“Who are you?” he said, bewildered.

“I’m the Doctor.”

Jack eyed him as though unsure whether he was joking.

“I’m a doctor, too,” he said with a smile.

“Ah, yes, but you see, I’m the Doctor. Which means I’m allowed to ask you questions about weird brains that make people into what I believe is technically known as Real Chalet Girls.”

“Oh.” Jack turned rather red and shuffled his feet awkwardly. “Those.”

“It all began when Joey left,” said Jack, after refusing a cup of coffee and accepting instead a splash – since that was all she would allow him – of Hilda’s medicinal brandy. He peered gloomily into it. “She said she was bored stiff, although that seems most peculiar to me. I know I’m not around a lot, but she knew what it would be like before she married me. After all, she had all the children to keep her occupied, and the School. I mean, how much more could she want?”

Amy was staring at him as though he was a creature from another planet. Or rather, now that she had met quite a few of those and rather liked many of them, as though he was completely insane.

“What, are you, like, a caveman or something? Seriously, the kids and the School! I’ll tell you what, matey, no woman these days would stand for that kind of thing.”

“What are you talking about?” said Jack, looking at her with wary suspicion, then turning to Hilda for assistance.

“I don’t know for certain,” said Hilda, “but I suspect that Amy and her companions are from the future.”

“The what?” Jack frowned as Hilda deftly removed the brandy bottle from his hand, which had grasped it, apparently quite absent-mindedly. “Really, Hilda,” he complained. “I don’t see how you can expect me to bear up under that sort of shock without something to sustain me.”

“Try common-sense and intelligence,” said Hilda tartly.

“How did you guess we were from the future?” said Rory, eyeing Hilda with considerable awe.

“I suspect the mention of your first date at the Golden Girls reunion gig might have been a clue,” said the Doctor. “You know, I met them once – appeared as a guest artist in one of their shows, actually. It was quite an experi–”

“No, no!” Amy waved her hands at him in distress. “I don’t want to know any more. Please, I don’t want to think about you on stage with a pair of catsuits.”

“Well, they weren’t wearing catsuits that time,” said the Doctor. “And they were a lot younger. Anyway, that’s beside the point. Yes, you’re right, Hilda. At least, Amy and Rory are from the future.”

“And what about you?”

“Me? Oh, I just travel a lot. Come on, Jack, back to the point. Your wife left you and you – what? Decided to grow another one?”

“Good heavens, no!” Jack looked horrified at the bare idea. “You won’t catch me marrying again.”

Amy saw Rosalie’s face fall slightly and shook her head, unable to imagine why anyone could feel disappointment that so chauvinistic a person was off the market. Jack continued.

“You see, I’ve spent most of my adult life near the School, and I knew that if Joey had been trained in the way the girls are taught now, she would never have left me. Things were far too free and easy in the old days, though of course I didn’t realise it then. And I thought, well, my life might have ended in disaster but that doesn’t mean that all my younger friends and colleagues should go the same way. They’re good men, you know, and they deserve good wives, which is what you train your girls to be, isn’t it, Hilda?”

“Well, actually,” Hilda began, but Jack’s question had apparently been rhetorical and he steamrollered over her.

“A true Chalet School girl would be the ideal wife, but of course not every member of the School ends up exactly as she should be. So I started wondering whether there was a way to – to encourage them to be – well, more so. I did some research, and asked around a bit. And then one day I met a man in a bar, and he made it all possible for me.”

Thanks for all the comments. This was supposed to be the penultimate post, but then some other characters pushed their way in....

“He just happened to have a brain connected to a life-support system in his bedsit?” said the Doctor with what Hilda felt was excusable doubt.

“Well, yes,” said Jack. “It didn’t seem odd at the time, for some reason. Actually, it didn’t seem odd at all until now.”

“Yes, that’s because of the psychic field,” said the Doctor absently.

“Field?” said Jack. He looked longingly at the brandy bottle, which was now on Hilda’s other side. “Psychic?”

“Yes, the life-support system is also creating a low-level psychic field, which influences people’s behaviour.”

“It was supposed to make them into Real Chalet Girls,” said Jack. “All I wanted was to help people.”

“Oh, yes, that’s what they all say,” said the Doctor. “We just wanted to make people better. Only they always seem to think the way to do it is by stopping them thinking. I’m sure you’ll be glad to know that the psychic field has been deactivated. Within a few hours the girls will be back to normal.”

“What?” Jack jumped to his feet. “Oh, come on – some of them were just about to leave school. They were ready and perfect for my doctors to marry.”

“What a terrible shame,” said Amy, with biting sarcasm. “They’ll have to marry real people now, instead of brainwashed robots.”

Jack slumped back into his chair.

“All that work for nothing.”

“So what happened after that? This man gave you the brain, told you what to do. But why? What was he doing this for?”

“He was helping me. He just said to make sure that as many of the girls spent as much time in its presence as possible. I knew that if I donated it to the Science department you’d have to let the girls study it. And Hilda keeping it in here was even better; she’s always having girls in to talk to them.”

“Yes, but surely you didn’t think that he was doing it as a – a gift to doctors everywhere. Oh, you did, didn’t you? It seemed like the perfect solution, and you never looked any further. You see, this is why humans always seem to be in a mess. They never ask questions. No, they’re always asking questions, but they’re the wrong questions. Anyway, we need to find this man. Any ideas, anyone?”

“We could try a few bars,” said Jack hopefully.

“You know, I’m really getting a bit bored of him,” said Rory. “Can I throw him out?”

Hilda eyed him frostily.

“If, as I suspect, you mean ‘may I?’, I should imagine the answer is yes. Do you have any further use for Jack, Doctor?”

“No, he’d slow us down. I think we need to pay a visit to this sanatorium.”

They left the study, Rory skulking at the back of the group, somewhat abashed.

“What did I say?” he whispered to Amy as they crossed the garden, taking a short cut across the grounds.

“No idea,” said Amy. “But I wouldn’t say it again, if I were you. That is one scary woman. Hey, guys!”

This last was to a group of sixth formers to whom she had chatted the previous evening.

I don't think I could manage a hundred  but here's one more! Sorry, they just muscled their way in....

One or two of the girls said “hello, Amy,” but most of them gave her only the most cursory of glances, their gaze fixating instead on Rory or, in some cases, the Doctor.

“Hel-lo,” said Jack Lambert, sashaying up to Rory, a sultry smile on her lips. Arda Peik, thinking quickly, stamped on her friend’s foot and pushed in front of her.

“Hi!” she said and looked up at him through her eyelashes with a kittenish pout. “I’m Arda – what’s your name?”

“He’s called Rory and he’s engaged to me,” said Amy, gripping Rory’s arm as though afraid he might suddenly run away, a fear that was not unfounded.

“Yup,” he said, sidling nervously. “I’m engaged. To Amy. Getting married tomorrow morning, actually. Sort of. So, definitely not available.”

“Oh.” Arda’s face fell. However, being of a determined nature and driven by her very recently discovered hormones, she turned her attention instead to the Doctor, only to find that Wanda von Eschenau was before her. But Wanda had weak points that Jack did not possess. Wasting no time, Arda grabbed Wanda by her long ponytail and hauled her backwards, stepping neatly into her place. The Doctor blinked.

“Hi!” she said again, and this time held out her hand, deciding happily that this man was much better looking than the other one, anyway.

“Um – yes – hi,” said the Doctor. “Actually, we were just – um,” he ran down as the hand waved insistently under his nose. Not knowing what else to do, he grasped it by the tip of the fingers. Arda, scenting opportunity, immediately wrapped her hand around his and took two steps forward.

“I’ll come with you if you like,” she breathed.

“Well, um, maybe not –” The Doctor found himself almost wrenched off his feet as Arda’s hand was dragged from his and her piercing shrieks filled the air. Jack had recovered and, aided by Renata van Buren, had hauled her away from her quarry.

“Sorry about that,” said Jack, attaching herself to the Doctor’s arm and smiling seductively at him, her short hair standing up around her slightly grubby face. “Arda really has no idea how to behave with men.”

But before either she or the Doctor could say any more, Wanda was flailing at Jack with her fists.

“First come, first served!” she screamed. “I was before you!”

“I’m the oldest!” shouted Renata, trying to elbow her way between them. She received Wanda’s fist in her eye and, losing her head, began to claw at Wanda’s hair. Arda, in the meantime, tried to haul Jack off the Doctor’s arm and Gillie Garstin, who had until now refrained from such undignified behaviour, found that she could no longer retain her self-control and flung herself into the fray, crying,

“I’m the only one who really loves him! And I’ve actually met a man before, so I know. Let me have him!”

Amy, Rory, Hilda and Rosalie, finally recovering from their stupefied horror, managed to extract the Doctor from the fracas.

“Quick!” whispered Hilda, and they fled, leaving the five girls, unaware of their departure, fighting one another on the playing fields. Reaching the shelter of the hedge, they slowed down a little.

“Come on, come on,” called the Doctor, running down the road. “We’ve got to get away – I mean, we need to get to the sanatorium as quickly as we can.”

As they followed him, faint screeches of rage sounded in the distance. They ran a little faster.

“This is your fault!” said Rosalie when they finally stopped, nearly a mile away from the school. “The girls were normal before you arrived and now you’ve made them go – insane!”

“I told you it was only ‘cos of the brain they didn’t go for Rory!” said Amy, still holding onto him protectively. “They could have killed him.”

“Or me – they nearly did kill me,” said the Doctor. “They hardly looked at Rory.”

“Only because I told them he was engaged to me,” said Amy.

“Um, actually,” said Rory nervously, “I think it might have been partly because you looked as though you might kill them if they tried anything.”

“Shut up,” said Amy. “Come on, let’s get to the sanatorium and see what the hell’s going on here.”

“If no-one minds, I think I’d better get back to the school and see if I can sort out this mess,” said Rosalie. She flung a glare round the little group, and stalked off back down the road, her files still clutched to her chest.

“Hurry up,” said the Doctor. “Someone’s got a plan and I want to know what it is. Hilda, do you want to follow your secretary and go and sort your school out, or do you want to come with us and find out something that might change your life? Forever?”

Hilda stared at him in silence for a moment, before a wide smile spread slowly over her face.

“Well, get a move on,” she said, and strode off down the road.

Their activities at the San excited some comment. Amy postulated the theory – with which Rory and Hilda were both inclined to agree – that it was at least partly to do with the Doctor’s fez. The Doctor, however, brushed this aside.

“No, I think it’s more likely to be to do with the fact that we keep on asking all the doctors what kind of woman they’d want to marry.”

“Someone gorgeous, intelligent and feisty,” said the bronzed, muscular young man to whom they were talking at the moment. He smiled at Amy. “Why don’t we have a drink?”

“Hm, that’s an offer I might have to consider,” said Amy brightly. Rory scowled.

“And then definitely refuse,” he said.

“Well, maybe.”

“So, not someone like, oh, I don’t know, maybe like one of those girls at the Chalet School?” said the Doctor.

The doctor let loose a great bark of laughter.

“What would I want one of them for? You’d find more interesting women in a convent. Seriously, the best thing to do if a Chalet girl – or mistress – gets her claws in you is to run.”

“I did,” said the Doctor. “That’s interesting, because someone told me that he thought you people deserved girls like – well, like the Chalet girls.”

“Whoever it was must have been insane, then,” said the young doctor. “Sure you won’t come for a drink?” he added to Amy. “Oh, well, it was worth a try.” He went off down the corridor, leaving them looking at one another.

“Right,” said the Doctor, dusting his hands together. “That seems to answer that question. The only person who wants the staff in this hospital to marry Chalet girls is Jack Maynard and, presumably, the mysterious man in the bar. We need to find that man.”

“I think that would be me you’re looking for,” said a voice behind them.

Post subject:  Re: Whose Brain? (updated 1/8)

Thanks for all the comments. I am worryingly tempted to write some adventures for Hilda as Companion....

“Jem!” said Hilda, turning round as she heard the familiar voice. “What a surprise. Is Madge here too?”

“Madge!” Jem laughed rather manically. “Madge was never a real Chalet girl. She was never a Chalet girl at all, though she started this whole thing off. Oh, I could tell from the beginning how it would end. All that sweetness and goodwill. A family atmosphere? She was bound to come up with the real thing in the end.”

“And what do you want with schoolgirls?” said the Doctor, watching him closely.

“Oh, they’re not just schoolgirls,” said Jem. He slammed the door behind him and, apparently quite absent-mindedly, turned the key in the lock. He continued, waving a finger in the air as though to emphasise his words. “They are schoolgirls who will become women, and it is women who are becoming more powerful every day, and they must be stopped.”

There was a pause.

“You know, I’m starting to think I’m not really a fan of the sixties,” said Amy. “I thought that was when everyone went all radical. You know, flower power and the sexual revolution and all that.”

Jem stared at her, his eyes bulging slightly.

“Yes, but this is only the very beginning of the sixties,” said the Doctor. “And this is a very sheltered corner of the world.”

“And there are people like – him – wandering around and forcing women to submit to men’s rule. He’s practically Victorian!” Amy stopped, looking faintly embarrassed. “Sorry, I think that might have been my grandmother coming through.”

“Flower power?” said Hilda, looking dreamy. “I don’t know what that is, but it sounds exciting.”

“Unfortunately it doesn’t exist yet,” said the Doctor. “Ok, first of all, who are you?”

Jem seemed to grow six inches taller.

“I,” he announced, “am Doctor James Russell. I began this Sanatorium, which has become one of the greatest in the world. I am at the cutting edge of many of the latest medical advances and have helped to initiate more than one of them. My name is known and respected all over the Earth. I see what is happening in the world and I refuse to let it be! And now, I own the minds and the hearts of the entire Chalet School, so that from this one small place I may change the course of history.”

Amy and Rory exchanged glances.

“Is it just me, or was that really, really pompous?” murmured Rory.

“No, it was really pompous,” said the Doctor.

“And who are you?” asked Jem, contriving to indicate by his look that the Doctor was the most insignificant being he had ever encountered. The Doctor, his hair protruding untidily from beneath the fez and his bow-tie slightly askew, gave Jem a slow, boyish smile.

“I,” he said, “am the Doctor. I am from the planet of Gallifrey in the galaxy of Kasterbouros. I travel through time and space in a time machine that’s bigger on the inside. My name is known and feared throughout the universe. I’m a Time Lord and believe me, you won’t be changing the course of history today.”

Hilda was staring at Jem with narrowed eyes.

“And just for the record, Jem,” she said, in her most freezing tones. “You may have controlled the girls’ minds, but you did not own their hearts, and you never will.”

Jem laughed again, even more manically this time.

“And you think that a lunatic and a schoolmistress can stop me?” he said.

“Hey! Us too,” said Amy indignantly. Jem looked down his nose at her and Rory, but did not dignify her comment with a reply. “And don’t look at me like that, matey. Your little plan isn’t going to work. Shall I tell you how I know that? ‘Cos I’m from the future, and the feminists definitely won. Isn’t that right, Doctor?”

“Well, sort of.”

“What do you mean, sort of?” Amy’s face fell slightly.

“There are fixed points in time and space – things that have to stay the same or the whole of time and space could collapse. But I’m afraid the feminist movement isn’t one of them. Anything could happen.”

“But it doesn’t,” said Rory, looking bemused. “We live there.”

“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find it looking a bit different when you go back. Or wouldn’t have, if we hadn’t deactivated the machine.”

The Doctor turned slowly back to Jem as he said this, and was therefore in time to see his face change, becoming suffused with wrath.

“You’ve done what?” he said.

“Didn’t I mention that?” said the Doctor.

“But how could you? You can’t know how it works – it’s –” He came to a sudden halt.

“Alien technology from three hundred years in the future?” said the Doctor. “Pretty basic stuff, really. All it took was a sonic blast on setting a hundred and seventeen.”

Jem’s face grew redder and redder.

“You damned fool!” he shouted when his rage had grown to the point where he could no longer hold it back. “You stopped it – you broke my machine!” He turned and began to fumble with the lock of the door.

“I wouldn’t bother trying to fix it,” said the Doctor. Casually, he extracted the sonic screwdriver from his pocket and sealed the door with it. “I’m afraid it’s broken irreparably. Sorry, careless of me, I know.”

Jem launched himself at the Doctor, who sidestepped and watched as he tripped over a chair and fell on the floor.

“You ruined all my plans.”

“Yes, I know. You might as well tell me – where did you get the technology?”

Jem slumped into one of the wooden chairs and buried his head in his hands.

“Who cares? It’s not going to do me any good now, is it?”

“You must have got it from somewhere, and if there are more of them I need to know about it.”

“There aren’t. This was the only one they had.” He lifted his head and stared bitterly at the Doctor’s inoffensive face. “I’ve got contacts everywhere, all over the world. I was at school with a man – his name doesn’t matter, but he was interested in all sorts of strange things. Used to swear there was life out there somewhere. Maybe on Mars, maybe further away than that. When I contacted him he was working for an organisation called Torchwood.”

The Doctor shifted slightly, but Jem didn’t notice and went on.

“They were based in London, so I went there to see him, and he showed me this machine. It had taken them two years to work out what it was for, and he explained to me that it created a telepathic field. If you gave it something to take data from – he demonstrated it on me, with a cat – it would replicate that; send it out to human brains and influence them. I ate nothing but fish for two days,” he added gloomily.

“This Torchwood sounds a bit weird,” said Amy.

“It is,” said the Doctor. “But it’s not our problem. Not any more. In fact, there’s only one more question that really needs to be asked. Whose brain?”

I feel sure that most of you have guessed it right! Thanks for all your comments - this has been very fun to write. :D

Jem looked at Hilda, his face lit briefly by a smile.

“How long have you had that brain in your school, Hilda?”

“Three years.”

The smile widened until Jem looked slightly mad.

“And who,” he whispered, “can you think of who died three years ago?”

Hilda frowned.

“I should think a lot of people – oh!” She froze in the middle of her sentence, her mouth slightly ajar and her eyes wide. “Mary-Lou.”

“Mary-Lou?” said Rory, looking at the dawning light on the others’ faces. “Who’s that?”

“Isn’t she that girl you were talking about earlier?” said Amy. “The one who was some kind of Chalet School saint.”

“The first true Chalet Girl,” said Jem. “Who better to use as a template for my plan to make all girls into what they ought to be? Honest, well-meaning and responsible. Forceful, obnoxious and ultimately completely ineffective.”

Hilda’s face was white and tight, as though she was only calm by a great effort of will.

“How did you get it?” she said. “We heard that Mary-Lou died in an accident. She was trying to help a child who had become trapped underground.”

“Oh, yes. But it wasn’t an accident.”

“You killed her,” whispered Hilda. One salty tear made its way down her cheek.

“I could hardly take the brain out if she was still alive, could I?” Jem laughed, apparently feeling that he had made rather a good joke. “And I certainly wasn’t going to wait until she died of natural causes. Anyway, all that noble self-sacrifice as she died – added a nice spice of heroic ineffectuality to the mix.”

For one moment, Hilda stood there, white and stiff. Then, without her seeming to move at all, her fist connected with his face. Jem’s chair fell over backwards, depositing him on the floor.

“You bastard,” she said.

Jem stumbled to his feet, clutching his jaw.

“This is the kind of thing I was trying to stop.” A little bit of spit trickled out of the corner of his mouth. “Women. Going around thinking they can be in charge of things. Trying to tell men what to do.”

“You’d better get used to it,” said Amy, who was standing hand in hand with Rory, a look of revulsion on her face. “’Cos women aren’t going anywhere. In fact, men like you are shortly gonna become really, really unpopular.”

Jem snarled wordlessly, spraying flecks of spit. In a gesture of defeat that mingled oddly with defiance, he tore his tie from around his neck and flung it to the floor. Then he ran to the door and scrabbled at the handle. The Doctor unlocked it with his screwdriver and Jem almost fell through and vanished off down the corridor. It was Hilda who, as they walked slowly after him, asked a passing nurse whether she had seen Jem in his flight.

“Oh, yes,” she said, looking startled. “He almost ran into me – he shouted at me. Said ‘I won’t live in a world like this’, and then he ran off and out of the San.”

***

Two hours later Hilda stood with the Doctor, Rory and Amy beside a police box in the corner of the playing fields.

“This never used to be here,” she said. “I’d have noticed it.”

Amy and Rory grinned at one another.

“This,” said the Doctor, laying his hand on the door of the box, “is my space ship. She’s called the TARDIS – Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. Like to look inside?”

“Is there space?” Hilda hesitated as Rory held the door open for Amy and followed her in, the door closing again behind them.

“Go on.” The Doctor’s wide smile spread across his face. He opened the door and Hilda, rather nervously, stepped inside.

Her heart suspended its activities for a beat or two, then began again, but much faster than usual. She had stepped into the police box, and now she was standing in an enormous room, filled with graceful columns and sprawling wires, corridors leading off in all directions and an enormous – well, some sort of very technical looking desk thing – in the centre.

She went to look at the outside of the box. It was still the same size as it had been before she entered. She went back in. It was still enormous. She looked at Amy and Rory, and at the Doctor.

“It’s – bigger on the – the inside!” she squeaked. She looked round again and took a deep breath. “Nell would absolutely love this.”

“Oh,” said the Doctor, picking up the fez, which had been lying on the console, and placing it absent-mindedly on his head. “And did I mention it travels in time?”

Sequel? Pretty please? Wonderful drabble, and I'm pleased with myself for guessing the brain's source.

Obviously I didn't read the bit where we found out OOAO was dead. Oh well, I shall have to be a more observant reader when the sequel is produced.

I've just found this and read it right through. I loved it, even though I haven't watched Dr Who since I was about 10. Typical clever Abi-ness.

Brilliant! Thanks so much, Abi. I read that in one sitting and loved it. I could really see and hear the characters doing and saying all that.

This reminds me, I think I started reading a tenth Doctor crossover a while back and didn't finish. Can anyone else remember it and where I could find it?
