Kathie bobbed a curtsey to her visitor, before greeting her politely. The junior department in Switzerland was a new venture for the Chalet School. She was anxious that everything should go smoothly. She already had several boys and girls entered for the new term in September, but they were mostly children of former pupils or mistresses. Obviously word was spreading if they were getting visitors from further afield.

“Welcome to St. Nicholas’ House, your majesty. I’ll show you all over the building, so that you can see where your children will be, then we can adjourn to my office and have some coffee while discuss the details.”

“That sounds like an excellent idea.” The Queen smiled in agreement. “I realise that the boys will only be able to spend a few years here, but after that my husband has plans for them to go to Paris. He, himself, learnt a lot when he spent some time there. If Flora does well here, and is enjoying herself, we may let her stay at the school until she is seventeen or eighteen. But it will be better if all three of them can have their childhood away from the palace.” Kathie wasn’t quite sure what to say. They had had a princess at the Chalet School before, of course; but that had been well before Kathie’s time, and, although Princess Elisaveta’s daughter was now a pupil in the senior school, her mother no longer used the title.

The two ladies started their tour in the classrooms. The Queen exclaimed in pleasure at the sight of the bright furnishings. There were few pictures, the walls were mainly covered with cork boards, and Kathie explained that they intended to display the children’s drawings and paintings. The tables, chairs and drawers were all painted in primary colours making the whole room very cheerful in the summer sunshine. Kathie was glad that they had been sturdily made – she could see that they would get heavy usage when they started in September. They had only expected about half a dozen children, but it looked as though there would be at least a dozen.

“That looks very practical.” They had entered the craft area. There were easels for painting, tables for modelling and collages, and sinks for washing up everything afterwards. Since she had been responsible for the layout of the learning areas, Kathie was pleased at the Queen’s praise. They moved on to the quiet reading corner. There was a window seat and cushions on the carpeted floor; one wall had low bookshelves full of delightful picture books and gaily illustrated story books designed to appeal to younger readers. “My three will love this – they never seem to have enough books at home, even with three of them!” The Queen was still enthusiastic over everything she saw.

“Flora will love the baby animals! She always seems to have a new pet at home.” The Queen was enchanted with the girls dormitory. “And Alexander and Pom will be thrilled with the trains, boats and cars. They are always asking when they can have boats of their own, they know they will have to wait a few years for cars, of course!” Kathie had led her visitor upstairs. There were two rooms, one for the boys and one for the girls. Unlike the School proper, where the dormitories had a floral theme, she had chosen transport for the boys, and a farmyard for the girls. The curtains at the windows and the covers on the beds were all covered in bright prints. Jo had suggested a Nursery Rhyme theme for both rooms, but Kathie felt that it would be too young for most of her charges. She was pleased to have her choices approved in this manner.

After a tour of the garden, where the Queen had been as enthusiastic about all the playground equipment as she had about everything else, Kathie led her visitor back inside. They passed the big hall, which Kathie explained would be used for assemblies; it had also been designed as an indoor playroom for when the bad weather should come in the winter.

The Queen was delighted with everything about St. Nicholas’. While she and Kathie enjoyed their coffee they talked about the particular requirements of her children. Then they adjourned to the office where the necessary paperwork was completed. After that the Queen returned to Celesteville, where she and Babar explained to their three excited children what was planned for September.

Thanks Lottie - I realised as soon as I read "Flora" that the Queen in questions had to be Celeste. Probably only because James rather like Babar. What's the monkey's name? Arthur? Will he be joining the CS?
