The sixth were on edge. Backs straight as ramrods, eyes glued to the teacher and ears as attentive as radar. Uniform was immaculate, there was not a pencil missing and yet all the girls present felt distinctly as if they were juniors in Lower IIB or even Kindergarten.

There was a reason for this. Miss Annersley had woken up with the mother of all migraines and one look from the normally delightful and loving Head was now enough to turn anyone into a weeping niobe or a pillar of salt.

Nobody dared breathe.

Never before had a class been so dedicated to "Love's Labour's Lost" which it must be said, was not Hilda Annersley's favourite play; something which added to her foul mood.

Upstairs, Matron was doing a spot check. Two juniors and three middles had suffered her wrath so far. The seniors were good, now she came to the Head Girl's tiny chambers. What a sight met her eyes! Clothes strewn over the floor, papers in little piles from different subjects and the drawers! The drawers! The bed was not made and the mattress and plumeaux not dealt with. Matey picked up the velveteen frock, scrunched up amongst some games socks. Matey's temper was not improved by her seeing a reminder written by the Head Girl to the Head Girl, "Must remember to tidy room before Matey sees!" A big heart had been drawn to surround this message and several smiley faces with flowers added to the artwork. Several kisses were present too. Matey was livid.

Rosalie Dene was enjoying her only moment of relaxation so far as she drew in a deep breath and paused in her interminable typing. Her peace was to be rudely shattered. Matey stalked in looking like a streak of lightning.

"Where is Helena Maynard now Rosalie?"

"Her form room."

"Right!"

Matron turned on her heel, nearly drilling an oil well into the floor.

"But Matey! Don't go there! Hilda's teaching and she's got the most awful headache! She's in a terrible mood!"

Matey turned round and shot poor Rosalie a withering glare as if to say, "I don't care."

The door was thrust open and Hilda Annersley nearly jumped out of her seat.

"Matron! What on Earth?"

"Mary Helena Maynard!"

The name cracked like a whip from Matey's tongue.

Miss Annersley turned a steel cold glare on the Head Girl. She could guess why Matron was so cross; come to think of it, she was not too impressed either.

Stupefied, poor Len could only point at herself and mouth, "Me?" she knew what was coming!

"Are there any other Mary Helena Maynards in this school?"

Miss Annersley spoke in acid tones!

"The state of her room Miss Annersley!"

With a final glare at Len, Miss Annersley commanded the class to wait in silence and read Act III. She accompanied Matey to the Head Girl's room.

Hilda Annersley took one look at the room and said icily, "I see."

She then swept down to the class and despatched an unhappy Len who nearly had tears in her eyes to Matey. Con and Margot both shot appealing looks after their sister. Unfortunately Miss Annersley saw them.

"Mary Constance! Mary Margaret! Pay attention!"

That was all Len heard. Head bowed in shame, arms folded about her, she stomped upstairs to face Matey's wrath.

Over at Freuedesheim, somebody was tidying the nursery and going through one of her daughter's rooms with a decidedly angry growl, "Slovenly! Heedless! Untidy! Just wait till I get hold of you young lady!"

Len practically swooned as the classroom door shut behind her.

She had some idea now how Marie Antoinette felt on her way to the guillotine; except Len's "execution" was likely to consist of a lengthy scolding whilst she tidied her room under supervision.

Then there was Auntie Hilda to consider. Len had been overcome with fear at the thought of what the Headmistress might do to her.

Len could feel Matey's eyes burning holes in her as that redoutable dame followed the lazy Head Girl up the stairs. Normally Len's long, strong legs would take the steps two sometimes three at a gallop. This time, Len felt as if she were walking on eggshells.

They reached the pretty cubicle room with ensuite facilities. Len's face creased with horror. How could she have been so careless?

"I suppose this is what you call a good example to all the other girls is it?"

"No Matron"

"And????"

"I'm very sorry Matron."

"Right! Well get to it young lady!"

With a whimper and a groan, Len picked up her sweaty games socks first and prepared herself for the diatribe of acid reprimands. She got a shock at the sound of the next voice.

"Helena."

Len spun round and nearly tripped over her netball skirt.

Mama dearest did not look happy.

Len gulped and wondered what sins she was to answer for now. She just about remembered as soon as the words tumbled out of her mother's mouth.

"If I have told you once, I have told you a hundred times! Tidy up the nursery, put away your clothes and shoes you leave lying around the house and for the last time, TIDY YOUR ROOM!"

The last remark nearly brought a "pot calling the kettle black" response from poor Len who simply regressed fourteen years and burst into tears.

"So she doesn't keep her own room tidy does she?"

Oh the cruel question from Matey!

"Perhaps during the holidays I should come over and babysit you to make sure you do tidy your room?"

Sob.

"Would you like that Helena?" this time from mother.

"No thank you."

Len set about cleaning her room with a vim.

She picked up her velveteen frock and could not bear to look at her mother's horrified face.

"Are your brothers as bad as this?" enquired Matey.

"No Matron, in our house it's the children who defy convention. The boys are tidy almost in a regimental way and the girls are led by the Queen of untidyness here."

Len was absolutely distraught by now considering she then had to face the wrath of her Auntie Hilda. It was then that her mother's heart softened and so did that of Matey.

"There there dear. I think you have got the message now. I didn't realise you could get a room so messy! I know I was messy but all this darling!"

"Oh you were a challenge all right Jo! Don't worry Len, you've inherited it from your mother, but come on girl! It's just a downright mess! You would think a hurricane had hit your room!"

"It's one of her few faults Matey!"

"Well, to err is human, to continue in it is of the devil!"

"Oh we've had enough of Margot's 'devil' don't say Len has one too!"

Len laughed through her drying tears.

Matey allowed Joey to help tidy her eldest's room.

"I had to be pulled out of Auntie Hilda's lesson Mama."

Joey nodded sympathetically.

"I know. Auntie Rosalie advised against meeting with her. She has a migraine."

"She's furious! Of all the days to be pulled out!"

"Well, you know what the moral of the story is don't you young lady?"

Len nodded. She was learning a valuable lesson about being tidy. She had not reckoned on a small pair of ears incredulous at the news of the Head Girl's messiness!

Little Felicity Maynard almost expired with glee as she heard her "oh so perfect" older sister be doubly scolded.

Felicity had been one of the unlucky imps to be hauled out of her own lesson to face the wrath of Matey.

It had not been a good week for Felicity. Margot had complained about her dawdling and dreaming in games. This was true, as Felicity was at the time debating how relevant hockey was to ballet.

Then Con had been in a wild frenzy over a lost library book. Her long black hair had been flailing through the air in annoyance and had ended up lashing against Felicity's face.

Len had had the nerve to send her from the dining hall before all the staff and other girls just for attacking her only shrivelled prune in an ocean of custard. This was too much.

This was not what older sisters were for in Felicity's little mind.Quite the reverse. Older sisters were meant to cover for little sisters and not be so "pi" all the time.

Having a good laugh at Len behind her back eased Felicity's negative thoughts towards her sisters. That would normally have been the end of it but for a sulky voice,

"What are you grinning about?"

Felicity spilled the beans at once without thinking to whom she was addressing this information. As soon as the words rattled off her tongue, she realised this was not a good person to speak to.

Jos Marvel stood looking incredulous. her eyes were wide open and her jaw dropped. Len Maynard? Hauled out of the Abbess' lesson and scolded by her mother and Matey for untidyness?

"I ...I...meant...I"

"Too late now!" leered Jos, who made a move to grab the unhappy Felicity.

"Oh dear" squeaked Felicity as she hurried away to class. She desperately prayed she would be kept in during break so that Jos may not get her. How was she going to explain this to Len? Her guilty feelings were exacerbated as she thought of how nice Len could be. Felicity was truly sorry she had let the cat out of the bag over one of Len's faults.

There was a brief moment of hope when Felicity thought she could get Jack Lambert to approach Len on her behalf. This hope soon evaporated as Felicity remembered the unfortunate Jack was currently suspended in traction in the San following a particularly unpleasant gym injury.

There was no telling what bad girl Jos would do!

Jos Marvel was frequently palmed off to her American Uncle.

Egbert Ulysses Stapleton III was a man who had more money than sense and was an appalling influence on his niece. The product of a strict Presbyterian upbringing, he rebelled against all authority including that of his sister's over her child. He spoiled Jos rotten.

Jos had managed to escape on an exeat from school and Mr Stapleton was laughing out loud at Jos' character assassination of Helena Maynard.

"She is so pi, Uncle Eggie! She is the most ridiculous person ever, such a goody goody! I bet she doesn't even go to the loo! She doesn't need to!"

Uncle Egbert found Jos' foul comments amusing. Nobody except he and Jos did.

"Hmmm what you need is some sort of rebellion! I know one thing we did in the war of Independence, we tarred and feathered the Brits!"

Jos was very curious now.

"Sounds like she needs to be brought down a peg or two. I remember folks like him at College! Some of the jocks there were real mean..."

Jos was to find out that her plans could earn her a much deserved one way ticket out of the Chalet School.

But would she be tempted?

"Oooooorrrrrrrrruuuuuuggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!"

A growl of annoyance uttered forth from the Head Girl's pretty features.

Something had really got her goat.

She didn't remember putting her Spanish papers in with her English papers or her English papers in her Head Girl's notes which she brought to every Prefects' Meeting.

This had been happening fairly frequently of late at random times in the week. (Usually when Jos Marvel could gain access unnoticed.)

Then she started to have an outbreak of odd socks.

Then she started to lose things. Her hairbrush was the first to go. Con had innocently brought it to her asking why it was in her cubicle.

Len had snapped at Con that Con must have borrowed it whilst sleepwalking. Con quickly retorted that Len was so disorganised she couldn't find her way out of a paper bag. Margot had been sniggering at the two until they rounded on her.

It was going to be difficult to detect Jos. This time she had chosen to act alone to avoid the chances of an accomplice with a conscience; and she had made efforts in her work and behaviour to gain the trust of her teachers in order that she could run errands for them and perform her misdeeds at the best opportunity.

She had nearly been caught slipping Len's history essay into Margot's biology notes which were in Margot's cubicle. She had dived under the bed only to see the feet of Carmela walk past the cubicle, pause, pick something up and then depart.

Jos breathed a sigh of relief. It was quite an adventure all this creeping around.

She continued on her errand to Matey.

Back to the Prefects.

Len's unnatural growl worried all in attendance.

"I am not stupid! I never put schoolwork in my prefects' folder!"

She sat back in her chair and folded her arms with a vim.

"There must be some imp playing a trick on me."

Len's eyes sparkled a fierce blue.

"But who would have the impertinence..." began Con

"I intend to find out! But we have work to do! I shall think of something Con, trust me!"

Con and Margot looked at each other with foreboding.

The door was thrust open and Miss Annersley and Matey appeared in mighty wrath. Miss Annersley beckoned at an astonished Len.

All the prefects heard was "To err is human, to continue in it..." before the door closed shut.

A sea of feathers swathed the dormitories and the remnants of torn pillows and plumeaux were in Len's room.

"Some little imp has launched some sort of wicked trick upon you Len. Do you have any idea whom it may be?"

Miss Annersley wanted an answer.

Len was astonished. Some little beast was trying to rag her! Oh, if she knew who it was, she would ring their necks!

It was fortunate for Len that despite her untidyness, Matey and the Abbess were well aware that Len would not do anything so foolish as to organise a mass pillow and plumeaux fight and leave the resulting goose feathers scattered around the sleeping quarters.

Len felt rather like a goose right now. Even though this was a rag, why hadn't she seen it coming? Who could it possibly be?

This was going to have to be a major clean up job and all the girls would have to help, to say nothing f asking the San for emergency pillows and plumeaux.

All the girls, well maybe the Seniors and prefects, as the Middles could not be trusted and the juniors were too young.

"Has anybody been in trouble lately Len? No fines for slang or silly behaviour during prep? No dormitory infringements?"

"N..No Miss Annersley. The only one who has been in any trouble was when I... when my room... when...."

Len faltered.

"When Matron pulled you out of my lesson to tidy your room?"

Len nodded.

"I had pulled Jos Marvel out as well, her dressing gown had fallen from its peg." Interjected Matron.

"Did you deal with her Len?"

"No. I haven't had to speak to Jos for weeks. She's been a model student lately."

"Well we had better organise the clean up. The staff will supervise the Middles and Juniors and all girls are on their honour not to speak of this."

Len nodded; she was flabbergasted.

"And Len, I shall want to know who was responsible!"

Miss Annersley left to organise the girls as a shell shocked Len went back to the Prefects' meeting to tell them of the change of plan.

"Clean up goose and duck feathers? You have GOT to be joking Len!" Margot said with total disbelief.

"That's what we have to do Margaret and we need to find which imp was responsible!" snapped Len.

"So we can hang, draw and quarter her!" finished Con grimly.

With barely concealed irritation the Senior girls and prefects set about their fiddly and tedious task.

The seniors and the prefects were not amused. They had spent what seemed like an eternity picking up feathers.

Abendessen duly arrived for the sore backed seniors and prees.

None were amused to notice little ripples of laughter flowing through the juniors and middles. Several duck and chicken noises were made. These increased with frequency and volume until the whole middle and junior school were quacking and clucking in unison.

It was obvious to Len what had occurred; some little beast had found out what the seniors and prefects had been doing for the past couple of hours!

She rang the bell.

Still more laughter.

She beat the bell up and down.

Riotous laughter.

"SILENCE!"

Mary Helena Maynard roared.

"I see you know what has happened to us. I call upon the girl or girls responsible to own up, on their honour!"

The appeal to honour was ignored. Len was shocked.

Len looked as if she was sucking something particularly unpleasant, such as sour lemons.

"So no girl in this school has any honour?"

Silence.

Several juniors were in tears. Felicity was terrified. She had never seen Len look so cross. How could she approach her with her suspicions?

The Middles were completely mystified.

Inwardly Jos smirked. She was undetectable! Nobody would give her away, because she had told nobody! Yes! She was going to get away with it!

Jos affected a mystified air like her peers. It wouldn't do to be looking too innocent. The prees would spot that!

This was just one fun game of cat and mouse!

Poor Len was close to cracking up. She now had to deal with a dishonest girl! She stood firm on the dias and allowed no emotion to flicker. She sat down and pointedly ignored the Middle and Junior school.

"What am I to do? What AM I to do? Surely I can handle this by myself?"

Len muttered to herself and only her sisters heard.

"Couldn't you just play the waiting game and wait for the little madam to slip up?" enquired Con.

Margot recognised the signs of frustrated anger in her triplet.

"There's nothing to stop you asking for advice from Mama. It need not be the Abbess or Mary Lou. It could even be Dad."

Len looked at Margot and Con.

"Or we could play divide and rule!" suggested Con.

Margot agreed.

"Draw up a list of suspects and play them off against each other!"

"You saw the kids' reactions! Most of them had no idea what we were talking about. How could we draw up a list of suspects?"

"There's only one kid I wouldn't trust."

Con ruminated on her contribution as Len and Margot looked at her.

"Jos Marvel. She's never really fitted in here. Too pompous and full of herself. We've had trouble with her before!"

Len's eye was now on Jos. Margot and Con watched the girl from afar.

Jos was perturbed, but she musn't show it! She had to let them know she was in control!

"She's not pretending to look overtly innocent is she? That would be a dead give away."

Len spoke this with thought.

"She's cunning and manipulative, she would have learnt not to do that trick."

was Margot's verdict.

"I think we have our candidate."

As Con said this, her sisters nodded.

If Jos could hear these words, she would have cut her losses and confessed; but she was on a roll now!

Very shortly different dormitories and lockers across the school would have belongings switched around and rifled to untidyness.

Nothing would be taken of course, but the inconvenience to so many would be hilarious! Jos was highly amused.

She would soon get careless.

Her plans had to be put on hold when Len announced that because of the earlier rude laughter, All rambles for tomorrow were cancelled.

A howl of disappointment broke out and Len was relieved to note many of the Middles growling about whoever was responsible for setting up Len had better own up quick or the Middles would start their own vigilante methods.

Jos briefly looked scared, something Con noticed and duly passed on to the Head Girl.

Jos would have to ask her uncle for further advice on being a nuisance.

The weekend brought the triplets to Freuedesheim for Mittagessen.

Inside the Speisesaal, they sniffed the distinctive tobacco aroma of their father's pipe.

"He's home!"

Len said as she and her sisters grinned.

Jack wasn't far away.

"No, you can leave my slippers alone you daft dog!"

A gentle chiding for Bruno as Jack ambled back into the Speisesaal with a book of sea adventures and Bruno padding behind him.

"There you are! I wondered where you had got to!"

Jack gave his daughters a kiss and a hug each, but when Bruno tried to do the same, he was told to sit down and behave. Con took hold of his collar and Margot sat with her on the sofa tickling Bruno's long furry coat as he panted.

Len sat opposite her father in the great comfortable armchairs at in front of the fireplace.

Jack put his book down and asked to hear all the news.

"We have lots to tell you Dad!"

Jack was expecting a selection of leadership, literary and sports stories but was surprised to be drawn into this little rebellion!

"Oooh that is mean! Mean and gutless! I think with such a cunning little fox as you are dealing with, she will slip up eventually. It may well be on an unrelated infraction like fines for slang or wrong uniform; but you will find a way of catching her.

That thing with the plumeaux and pillows cost a lot of money, it took quite a few of our emergency spares, so it affected other people too, the sick and the vulnerable."

"So we just have to watch then?" asked Margot glumly.

"That's only part of it, remember not everyone is as eagle eyed as your sister."

Jack nodded to Con, who glowed with pride.

"Do you have a suspect?" Jack asked Len.

"Jos Marvel." was the reply.

"That little ass who Mary Lou pulled out of a snowdrift?"

"That's the one Dad!"

"Goodness! I have met her family! Her mother and father are skiing here with her uncle. The parents are absolute drips! Live for the moment, don't think about tomorrow. As for the Uncle, well, the mother had sprained her ankle and I was treating her. Anyway, the uncle was most offensive."

"How was he offensive?" asked Con.

"Oh kept threatning to sue me if his sister did not recover, kept going on about medical malpractice and how he knew best!"

"That's disgusting!" The triplets were outraged.

"It was more pathetic really. He was like a kid throwing his toys out of a pram. Laughable. Absolutely laughable."

"He sounds most unpleasant Dad."

"Oh he is, and from what I can gather young Jos is foisted onto him all the time because the parents are too busy partying. He's got a real problem with authority. Maybe that's where Jos gets it from? You never know."

Jack stood up.

"If I were you girls, I would watch to see if anything else goes wrong, do a little investigating and if its Jos, check to see if her uncle has anything to do with this wickedness. I suspect he is the worst sort of influence on her."

They heard the door open. It was Joey.

"Oh your mother's back. Come along, let's help her and remember it's Papa."

"Yes Da..Papa." they chorused.

The triplets had endured the "chickadees" "sugarpies" and "thim's me sentiments" of their beloved Mama. They were thankful she did not mention "Great Caesar's bathmat".

Now they were on their way back to school.

They found Jos swinging around her uncle and laughing at his vulgar jokes.

"Jocelyn Marvel!"

Jos ignored Len's call.

"Jos!"

"JOCELYN!"

She turned around, surprised.

With her uncle by her side, now was the chance to give the triplets some real sauce!

Jos tutted and rolled her eyes.

"What?" she shouted with aggression and impatience.

"Why aren't you with the rest of the middles getting ready for dancing?"

snapped Len.

Jos's uncle roared with laughter.

"Dancing? How quaint! You girls don't need no fancy British dancing! You want some good old rock n' roll! You should be out meetin' boys! You limeys sure take the biscuit!"

The triplets eyed him coldly.

"Come inside Jocelyn. At once!"

"No!"

"Yes!"

"No!"

At a signal from Len, Con and Margot grabbed Jos.

"Hey you can't do that to my niece! Take your hands off her! She can do whatever she wants! That's assault! I shall sue you! I shall sue the school! I shall buy the school and sack the staff! I shall own you!"

Len did something that quite shocked her.

She pulled back her arm and gave the obnoxious man such a slap in the face, it sent him sprawling in the dust.

She turned on her heel and with her sisters and their prisoner quckly marched to the school.

"You've really done it now!" gloated Jos.

"My uncle will so sue the school! You are well and truly for it now!"

Len's blood pressure rocketed. She had completely lost control. Oh this was terrible! Absolutely terrible!

Margot and Con manhandled Jos to her form mistress to receive the mother of all scoldings. Naughty Jos sniggered, practically drunk on the thought she had brought down the Head Girl. Jos was sent to Matron, were she kept sniggering until Matron gave her a short sharp shock.

Len was taking deep breaths and was rejoined by her sisters.

Outside, the spoilt uncle was literally jumping up and down with fury that he had been slapped by a girl and a limey at that! He grabbed his hat from the dust and retired to lick his wounds. He hoped Jos could get her own back with that skeleton key he gave her as a present.

Obnoxious and spoilt though the foolish man was, he was not going to complain as he knew he was in the wrong.

With Len fully calm now, the triplets went to Miss Annersley to explain what had happened.

Jos had sulked and glowered behind Matey's back as she did the hated mending to which she had been sentenced. She was not going to risk another short sharp shock by giving Matron her sauce.

She was given a plain meal and told to go staight to bed. She briefly thought of rebellion and Matey picked up on this by suggesting she could quite easily put Jos to bed as if she were a naughty baby.

Jos was furious! How dare she, of all the people, be treated like this!

Jos sulked as she lay in bed dreaming her revenge upon Len Maynard.

She had her skeleton key.

She grinned.

Matron had gone downstairs.

Jos wriggled out from under the tight bed sheets.

She set about her mischief.

That night a plane landed in Switzerland carrying two very rich men, both the fathers of old girls of the Chalet School.

Hilda Annersley was trying to hold down an eruption of mirth and glee at the sight of the two American millionaires in her office.

Not only were they the fathers of old Chaletians.

Certain mannerisms of their daughters were all too evident in the men.

It was quite like having an adult male version of Evvy and Corney bickering in her office.

Every time Mr Flower came out with a statement on which he was confident, Mr Lannis would interrupt with a doubtful, "Well..." just as Evvy used to!

Miss Annersley was convinced that if Mr Lannis were not seated, he would be rubbing one leg against the back of another as Evvy did in times of stress.

Both daughters were also the image of their fathers.

The Headmistress of the Chalet School had been delighted by their impromptu visit and for the past fifteen minutes, both men had been regaling her with details of what their respective daughters were up to. This had developed into a friendly game of "one up man ship" between the two as they sought to glorify their girls' achievements. If Evvy and Corney had been there to witness such an exhibition they would have cringed at their embarrassing Dads!

Large cheques had been written to fund chapels and so forth at the Chalet School, something which caused a glint in Hilda's eyes in addition to the comedy double act!

"Oooohh!" groaned Mr Flower.

"Say what's with you?" asked Mr Lannis.

"Are you ill Mr Flower?" this from Hilda.

"Lannis we have that scoundrel to deal with!"

Mr Lannis frowned.

Hilda noticed both men become firm and business like. Despite their genuine warmth she could see how both men were hard task masters and determined workers who had earned their fortunes.

"Sorry Miss Annersley, we're on the trail of an employee who stole a large amount of money from our joint business ventures. We heard he was in Switzerland at the Gornetz Platz. We have to get in touch with the gendarmerie and arrange for his arrest and extradition. It's an ugly business. However, we couldn't stop by without seeing you."

Mr Flower looked embarrassed.

"It's all the more embarrassing because he has a niece at this school and we are told she can sure be a brat!"

Mr Lannis finished.

Before she could think, Hilda asked, "Which child is this?"

There was an issue of child proection here. If the girl was in contact with a suspected thief, even a relative...

"Girl's name is Marvel, Jos Marvel! That's exactly what she ain't! She ain't no marvel in a good sense!"

"And to think our girls contributed so much to this school!"

Added Mr Flower.

Miss Annersley did not choose to mention boiled clocks or Indian war dances at Oberammergau's Passion Play. She knew what Mr Lannis and Mr Flower meant though.

She had had enough of Jocelyn Marvel.

Inwardly she prayed. Would the Chalet school be issuing its fourth expulsion?

Jos sniggered as her skeleton key unlocked the door to Len's Head Girl's cubey.

"What are you doing in my daughter's cubicle?"

Red handed!

"How did you even get in? The door is always locked, or at least it was five minutes ago when I tried!"

"Well?"

Jack Maynard's eyes bored like gimlets into Jos' brain. He spied the skeleton key.

"You shouldn't have that in school! It's just as well I happened to be here to treat a patient. Now I think you had better come with me to Miss Annersley's office!"

Struck dumb, Jos dropped her loot on the floor, handed the keys to Jack and was his prisoner. She stared ahead of her at all times. On the way she met three icy and disapproving triplets, who shot inquisitive looks at their father.

"Red Handed"

Jack said grimly.

In silence and in eerie unison the triplets followed father and prisoner to the hallowed chambers of Hilda Annersely MA (Oxon).

Only once did the frightened Jos glance back at them. She wished she hadn't. All three wore the same icy expression on their faces.

Cold - chestnut hair, cold - gloss black hair, cold - red gold hair.

"Spooky" didn't do it justice!

They were like ghosts.

They had arrived.

Messrs Lannis and Flower were leaving, but not in the same way their respective daughters used to leave the Head's study, (that is, on the verge of tears, post scolding). Although that would have been funny had that been the case.

"Mr Lannis! Mr Flower! A pleasure to see you two gentlemen! I am sorry I cannot stop, a bad business to deal with, if you will excuse me. Please feel free to drop into Freuedesheim!"

Mr Lannis and Mr Flower greeted Jack and the triplets warmly, but froze when they recognised Miss Marvel.

Jos looked like a startled rabbit. She had seen these men before through her uncle's workplace and she recognised the names; Lannis and Flower!

Things were not looking good for Miss Marvel!

"Dr Maynard, please mayn't I just apologise to Len and promise not to do it again?"

Jack ignored her. He knocked on the door and was bidden enter.

Miss Annersley was shocked to hear that Jos Marvel had a skeleton key where she had gained illegal access to the Head Girl's quarters.

Con and Margot were immediately despatched to Matron to organise a rigorous search of Jos's quarters in case she had taken other properties which were not her own.

Jos was made to apologise to an icy Len.

Whilst she was making her apologies, she desperately hoped that Matron wouldn't find....

Matron walked in brandishing.....

...the locked briefcase!

Con and Margot returned to say that no other girls' property was amongst Jos' belongings.

"Jos, what is in this briefcase?"

"I don't know. My uncle gave it to me yesterday. he asked me to hide it for a few days. I don't honestly know Miss Annersley. I didn't open it, it's my uncle's property!"

"And yet you are so callous with other people's property? Especially the Head Girl who has done you no harm, but for your automatic grievance with authority; something which will not help you in future years young lady!

I suggest we use that skeleton key to open the briefcase, I find this whole affair far too suspicious to leave it as it is! Dr Maynard?"

Jack took the skeleton key and after a succession of tries, the lid sprung open to reveal stacked dollar bills inside!

Jos cried in horror! It was expulsion for sure!

"Just as I thought. Far too suspicious to be left alone! Jos, did you know what was in this briefcase? Answer me truthfully, your future at the school depends on it!"

Miss Annersley could see from Jos' expression that she did not.

"I suspect I know to whom this money really belongs. Such a pity they were just leaving!"

Jack could guess that Miss Annersley was talking about Mr Lannis and Mr Flower.

"I did suggest they visit Joey at Freuedesheim, which they indicated they might."

"Con, Margot, run home and ask Mr Lannis and Mr Flower if they would return here at once please. Len, please go to Miss Dene and ask her to phone for the police. We shall also need to get in contact with Jos's parents and find her uncle. Matron, I suggest you take Jos into isolation."

Jos stumbled away, the whole affair was far too big for her to deal with.

The triplets sped off to do their duty.

"Is it me or are children today getting worse, Jack?"

Hilda sank into her chair.

"There's always been unpleasant characters. I think we are just more aware of them in a growing world. I remember as a boy in the Hampshire countryside thinking that London was in a different country and as far away as Australia, but it's less than two hours train ride and its always in the papers, so it feels right on your doorstep."

Hilda and Jack eyed the open briefcase with its dollarbills with distaste. The briefcase stared back at them almost in a cheeky way, perched on a little side table.

At length Messrs Lannis and Flower arrived.

"Well I'll be a...."

Hilda winced at the forthcoming Americanese slang from Mr Flower. What would it be? Splay footed glumph? Rubber necked four flusher?
Thankfully, Mr Flower stopped himself in time. Something his daughter rarely did.

"Lannis, do you have the bill numbers?"

Mr Lannis was already checking them.

He looked up with a grim expression.

"It's them. It's our money."

A police siren was heard. From the isolation room, Jos heard it too. Her rude defiance was rapidly melting away!

The Swiss commandant was brandishing an extradition arrest warrant from the United States Embassy and was fully informed of the theft from the Lannis and Flower joint business venture.

Miss Annersley calmly informed all concerned that the money had been retrieved from the belongings of a girl at the school the uncle of whom was the very man named on the arrest warrant and the same man Messrs Lannis and Flower were in pursuit of.

All that remained was the arrival of Jos' parents and her uncle.

Naboth and Catrunda Marvel winced at the thought of responsibility. They had planned to spend the day ice skating and skiing. Now they had a phone call to say their daughter was in serious trouble at school and she may be asked to leave.

Jos' Uncle and Catrunda's brother Egbert Stapleton laughed.

Egbert Stapleton laughed as he accompanied his sulky and surly sister and brother in law to the train.

He laughed as they were driven to the Chalet School.

He laughed as they were led to Miss Annersley's office.

He did not laugh when he recognised the briefcase, a Commandant and Messrs Lannis and Flower.

He felt the ice cold handcuffs on his wrists.

He saw the look of horror on his sister's face.

"Well? Have you anything to say?" barked Miss Annersley.

"This is a fit up! I...I...I am innocent! I'll get out of this! I'll sue you and you'll be sorry! Just you wait until you come up against Uncle Sam's justice. Hey Money talks... how about you keep the cash huh?"

"You are going to get a taste of Uncle Sam's justice allright buster! But you will be on the wrong end of it!"

This from Mr Lannis.

"That cash will go to the Chalet School now that we have recovered it you little varmint! If only to pay for the bedding your niece wrecked and for the blankets the Sanatorium loaned the school!"

From Mr Flower.

Egbert Stapleton quivered and shook.

"I... I'm sick! I need a doctor!"

"I'm free!" Jack Maynard replied sarcastically.

He did a quick check of Stapleton and pronounced him to be,

"A filthy bounder in rude health."

Stapleton was led away. He cowered as his two bosses loomed over him.

"You are up for extradition you rubber necked four flusher!"

"You splay footed glumph!"

A chorus of American admonitions (none of which were pleasant) accompanied the police, Stapleton and the two American millionaires from the office.

Miss Annersley winced. She had hoped she had heard the last of such slang!

Catrunda watched her brother go in bewilderment.

Naboth Marvel who had a miniscule amount of common sense (more than his feather headed wife) realised something was badly wrong.

"M..M..Miss Annersley, please tell us, what has happened and where is Jos?"

Miss Annersley gave him a steel glare.

Jos had watched from the window of the isolation room a very sorry scene.

Her uncle Egbert, being led away in handcuffs by the police and followed by his bosses to the chorus of avariety of American insults.

"That geck!"

"That gink!"

Messrs Lannis and Flower could certainly hold their own in a slang contest.

With no mother to guide her, Cornelia had picked up her father's colourful language with ease, as had Evvy, her Austrian mother was far too polite for slang!

The door opened and Matey beckoned to Jos.

"They're ready for you!"

"I'm not coming!" defiant to the last.

"You will never learn will you!"

Matey made a move to grab Jos. She would carry her if necessary.

"Allright! Allright! I'm coming!"

Jos wished the journey to the Head's office wasn't so short and quick. She dreaded her reception.

She was startled at her parents' appearance. They looked completely cowed. She had never seen them look so submissive before. her mother appeared to be on the verge of tears and her faher shot her an angry look.

Both parents had received a thorough run down, complete with doumented evidence of how difficut Jos had been and of her recent escapades.

Miss Annersley had not criticised them as parents, but their consciences told them that they had failed their daughter.

"This must be her absolutely final chance! It is not as if either of you are at the Sanatorium for your health and we are obliged to keep her
for your health. If she so much as turns up to a lesson a mintue late or has her uniform done incorrectly or has a fine for slang or speaking the wrong language on the wrong day, then she will go! Have I made myself clear Mr and Mrs Marvel?"

Naboth and Catrunda Marvel would never forget that scolding.

"Things are gonna change, young lady!"

Naboth said on seeing his daughter.

"How could you Jocelyn, how could you?"

sobbed her mother.

"You see the distress you are causing your parents? Are you happy now Jos? Are you satisfied?"

"No Miss Annersley. Please forgive me. I am very sorry! I don't deserve to be here. All I seem to do is hurt people!"

Miss Annersley relaxed a little. She knew contrition when it appeared. This was a foolish little girl who was out of her depth and who was used to defending herself through defiance.

The parents also were quite out of depth and Miss Annersley was prepared to temper justice with mercy.

She suggested regular, weekly contact with Jos' parents to check that they were informed of everything Jos got up to and that positive behaviour by Jos would be rewarded and celebrated.

Jos nearly cried with relief that she was not to be expelled.

Miss Annersley's heart glowed as she saw the joy in the child's face and that of the parents.

They had had a hard lesson learnt. All of them.

It was ridiculous, all of this started because Jos thought it fun to exaggerate one of the few faults of the Head Girl.

A quiet word with Len on the stress of tidyness was received with due care and attention. So Miss Annersley was NOT pleased when Len was pulled out of assembly in front of all the girls by an incandescent Matey to attend to a mattress that was not properly humped, slippers upon which Matey had tripped up, muddy games socks and games skirt thrown into a corner and masses of papers of different subjects all over the place.

Len seethed as she stormed past the prefects, the seniors the middles and the juniors, her face was as black as thunder as she knew the Abbess would kill her! She could sense the ripples of amusement, disbelief and reproach.

She was called to the Head's office where the first words she heard were, "To err is human, Helena, to continue in it..."

In addition to various sentences of mending, she was given a most unpleasant Head's detention.

Len was completing her lines for Miss Annersley when two reproachful sisters of hers poked their heads around the door of the prefects common room.

Len snarled.

"What do you want?"

"Can you come and help us tidy our cubeys Len?" cheeked Margot.

"You've been so tidy lately!" sniggered Con.

This was too much sisterly teasing and Len decided to assert her authority as the eldest.

"You two! Get your noses out of here! Out!"

"Then there's our mending to do!"

"OUT!" bellowed Len.

Con and Margot fled as a book or three was thrown at them. They hurried away like two giggling imps.
