One Month Later

The quiet that had accompanied the westering sun’s long slide behind the Tiernjoch was shattered as church bells rang out, raucous and unexpected, and easily heard, even from the other end of the Tiernsee. Jo Bettany looked up from her copy of Northanger Abbey, and pushed untidy hair behind her ear.

”Sounds like they found the bell tower,” she observed.

“I hope they deafen themselves,” put in Hilary Burn savagely, but Jo’s only response was a slight shrug, and Hilary returned to her watch, perched on a wooden stool by a window. Silence fell again except for the discordant jangling in the distance, and after a while even that ceased. The air was still, the smell of late summer wildflowers lingering, even though it was now September.

The door open suddenly, and the two girls stiffened, then relaxed when they saw who it was.

“Did you hear the bells?” Hilary asked.

Jack Maynard nodded. “Had a look through the ‘scope. The Tiernkirche’s full of ‘em. The whole town’s gone.”

Jo looked up with something like her old expression. “Jack…” she began, but Jack shook his head sombrely.

“There’s no-one left, old girl,” he said, and Jo looked away again. Hilary watched with interest as Jack’s mouth tightened.

“Gottfried brought back some water,” she offered. “Mlle said she might make coffee. There’s no shortage of that, at least!”

Jack swung round, alarmed. “She’s not lighting a fire?”

Hilary hesitated. “N-no, I don’t think so. I mean, not yet. Why?”

“They’re back,” said Jo drearily. She wasn’t looking at either of them; her attention was on a photograph pinned to the wall. She touched it with the tip of a finger. “They’ve come back to kill us all.”

Ooh, this is intriguing, Liss! I take it it's 'Exile' but they didn't get away?

Will there be more of this? I'm intrigued by it. Is it a cross-over that I haven't identified yet? (Does sit-up-and-beg)
