Well, here I go! Wish me luck. Mods, if I've put this in the wrong place, please move it. Thank you.

Dear Mama and Papa

Just a quck note to let you know I've arrived in Liverpool with no problem. It felt so strange after travelling to London with Len and Margot and then carrying on alone.

My landlady is very kind. She has provided me with all the information I need to get about, including bus timetables, coffee bars where students meet, theatres, museums and other places worth seeing, and a list of forthcoming events.

I have a lovely room on the first floor overlooking the street, so I'll be able to watch everything that's going on while I'm working, as my desk is at the window.

I'll finish for now, Mama, as I must unpack and tidy myself for tea. I may go out for a quick walk afterwards to see the general lie of the land before bedtime, but I'll leave the more detailed sightseeing for another day.

Please give my love to the family and write as soon as possible.

Your ever-loving Con.

p.s. Of course, I haven't forgotten about University. I'll let you have details in my next letter. I'm sorry this is so short for now but it's been a long tiring day and I'm still trying to get used to being without Len and Margot.

Con.

I'm guessing that she's gone to a different university? Thankyou - can't wait for more!

Ooh - history could be changed! I've been mentioning the Quarrymen in my lessons this week, albeit not quite as the main focus

Oh, brilliant  ! My mum and dad were both students in Liverpool during the 1960s, although sadly they never met up with the gentlemen in question  .

And Con always did always want to be a Paperback Writer ... (apologies for appalling joke  ).

Yippee, wondered who would realise, that's really cheered me up!!

Will try to write some more (at work) this week.

Starting this has made me realise a couple of things:

1. Keep things simple.

2. Don't get too tied down to facts.

ETA thank you for your comments.

Post subject:  Re: The Quarrymen and Con. A little more.

The next morning found Con on a bus heading towards the University of Liverpool. She managed to find a seat upstairs so she could get a good look at the "scenery".

As she looked out at the unfamiliar territory, she became aware of a conversation going on between two ladies sitting behind her.

"You're lucky with your son, you know." One was saying to the other. "He more or less does as he's told. My Stuart's so taken up with his art, I can hardly get through to him."

Con pricked up her ears at this. This Stuart sounded very interesting.

Could that be a Mrs Sutcliffe on the bus?

Quick suggestion - would you mind adding "updated 03/03/10" (or whenever) to the subject title? Just so no-one ends up missing anything :D .

Thanks - this is looking really interesting so far.

In a word, yes, it is Mrs Sutcliffe.

Thanks for the suggestion on updating.

Thank you for your comments everyone, they're really encouraging. ETA it helps that I've got my week off next week and I'm going to Liverpool on Monday and will do anything to do with the Beatles on Tuesday, which will help this drabble big time.

D'you know, I've never so much as done the trip round the Beatles' early homes, which considering that I'm a National Trust member and only live 35 miles away is ridiculous  . Really must get round to it. Hope you have a great day!

May I offer my humblest apologies to everyone who was insulted by my reference to older CBBers! Sorry, there doesn't seem to be a grovelling emoticon!

Enjoy your trip to Liverpool, Liz. Looking forward to an update when you return.

ETA According to Wikipedia, the band was reformed in 1993, so maybe that explains why younger members have heard of them. I don't think the remaining two Beatles are involved though.

"and as if that's not enough" the woman continued. "he's involved with a group, if you please! The Quarrymen, they call themselves. I'd rather he concentrated on his course at the Liverpool College of Art, if he must, but he will insist on going round with this group. Some 'teddy boy' by the name of John Lennon is the leader, apparently and there are two other members called Paul McCartney and George Harrison".

I really enjoyed my visit, thank you, even if I was only there for a day. I'd definitely go back again and for longer. Someone on here, I'm very sorry, I dont remember who, recommended going on the "Yellow Duckmarine" which I did first before going round The Beatles' Story. Both were excellent.

I wrote this first update plus one more while walking round The Beatles Story. Both were written in half light, along with some facts which I may use and I'm surprised I can actually read what I've written!

Con was more intrigued; what was a "teddy boy"? And who were the Quarrymen. It all sounded very strange. However, she must put all this to one side until after she had registered at University and made all her arrangements in that respect; that was what she was here for, after all.

But she resolved to find out more.

Post subject:  Re: The Quarrymen and Con. Updated 11 March.

I'm glad you're enjoying this. Here's a little more!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Con was back at her boarding house. She had registered at the University, had been introduced to her tutor and been presented with her timetable. She had found the lecture room and her eyes had almost fallen out of her head at the size of the Library - it would take a miracle to tear her out of there, she thought.

But now she wasn't due to start until tomorrow morning at 10.00 a.m. and she had the rest of the afternoon and evening to fill.

Her landlady's daughter, Cathy, put her head round Con's door.

"All sorted and nowhere to go?" she asked.

"I'm as ready as I can be" Con replied. "but just at a loose end for now."

"How about coming down the local coffee bar with me?" Cathy asked. "I'm meeting my friends there."

"Oh that's very kind of you" Con said. "Are you sure they won't mind me being with you?"

"Not at all" Cathy replied. "we're always on the look-out for new friends".

Con eventually found herself crammed into a window seat with Cathy's friends in the coffee bar at the end of the street; there was herself, Cathy, Clare, Jill, Steve, Chris and Carl. She felt a little the odd one out as it would appear the others were all paired up but they all made her feel extremely welcome.

They were all stunned when she explained her family to them.

"Eleven of you?" Steve exclaimed. "Man, that must have taken some getting used to."

"Well, I was either at school or at home, so I was used to being surrounded by crowds of people." Con said.

"Don't you find it strange, not being at Oxford with Len or Edinburgh with Margot?" Clare asked.

"Not at all." replied Con. "Len ws so used to looking after us and Margot was so excitable, I felt I must break away." Changing the subject, she repeated the conversation she had overheard on the bus that morning.
