There has been a bit of elasticity with time for this drabble, to allow Len, Con and Margot to grow up, but the staff and various others to remain as young as ever ...

“That’s unanimous then,” stated Miss Annersley. “So now we have allocated the Len, Con and Margot Maynard scholarship for triplets – Rosalie will you see to the correspondence for that, please – is that all the scholarships assigned for this year? It is? Good, then let’s move on to the re-arrangement of the dormitories. Now that the new block is finished, we should be able to house all the boys in that building, Matron, perhaps you will let us know what is still needed in terms of furnishings and so on.”

The meeting progressed, covering various other aspects involved in running a large boarding school and specific points for the next term.

“Is that everybody?” Kathie Ferrars did a quick head count. “No, we’re still missing some. Have you got the list there, Sharlie?”

“We’re still waiting for those new triplets and – aha, here’s Susan.”

“Just those triplets then? – boys or girls.”

“One girl and two boys from the looks of it,” answered Sharlie. “Shall I have a quick scout around; see if I can spot them?”

“No, need, I’m guessing that this is them coming now,” answered Kathie. “You get this lot loaded into the coaches and I’ll check them off.” She took the list from her colleague and moved in the direction of the lost-looking threesome in Chalet School uniform, while Sharlie started loading the coaches. I thought Sharlie said one girl and two boys – there’s two girls here. Oh well, maybe I misheard her.

She introduced herself to the triplets, ticked their names off on the list and led them to the coach to find seats.

There are triplets in KG1 in our school this year; not sure if they're two girls and a boy or two boys and a girl, but it was so difficult not to blurt out something about the Maynards when it was being discussed today!

Hopefully, that should become apparent soon ...

“Hello, I’m Susan,” the first triplet was greeted cheerily as she settled into her seat.

“Hi, I’m Lesley” answered that young lady, with a marked American accent.

“Are those your brother and sister?”

“Yes, we’re triplets.” Lesley replied.

“Cool,” approved Susan. “I’m an only child, I always thought it would be great to have a brother or sister. And if you’re the same age then you can share so many more things. How old are you?”

“Fourteen – we had a cake with 42 candles on it!”

“Me too – not the cake, but I’m fourteen – last week.”

“Well, Happy Birthday for last week then.”

“So, what are your triplets …” Susan broke off mid-question as a tall boy made his way down the aisle, speaking to most of the pupils as he passed them. He smiled and said 'hello' to Susan and Lesley, both of whom smiled back.

Further down the coach, Lesley’s brother was settled into a seat next to a boy of a similar age.

“Sorry, I didn’t catch you name when Miss F introduced you. What is it again?”

“Frank Junior Junior.”

“Hello Frank, I’m Geoff Maynard.”

“No, not Frank, Frank Junior Junior.”

“Sorry, I thought Junior Junior was your surname.”

“No, my surname is Buffay. Frank Junior Junior is my first name.”

“And you’re called the whole lot, all the time?”

“Yeah. My Dad’s Frank Junior, you see.”

“I see.” Geoff answered politely, not really seeing at all.

The third triplet found herself being chatted to in an equally friendly manner.

“Hi,” her neighbour smiled at her. “I’m Marie Courvoisier.”

“Hi, I’m Chandler.”

“Oh, we all use first names here.”

“No, Chandler is my first name. Chandler Buffay.”

“Isn’t Chandler a boy’s name, though?”

“Well, yes, but …”

“We’ve had girls with boy’s names here before, though.” A girl across the aisle interrupted. “My mum was here with a girl called Tom. Anyway, nice to meet you, Chandler. Did I see you come on with two other new people?”

“Yes, they’re my triplets.”

“Triplets! What fun. We’ve not had those here since the Maynard triplets left. Plenty of twins of course, they’re common as muck around here. I'm one myself." Marie admitted. "The head boy and girl last year were twins (more Maynards if you really want to know). And if you see that boy coming down the bus now, we think he’ll be head boy this year.”

“Who’s that?” asked Lesley as soon as the tall boy was out of earshot.

A head popped up over the seat in front “That’s Ben Willick, he’s probably going to be head boy this year. I’m Jess by the way.”

“He is sooooo cute!” said Lesley.

“Yes, but he’s a bit weird,” answered Jess, “He hasn’t got a father.”

“There’s nothing weird about that.” Susan put in, “I haven’t got a father either.”

“Yes, but not like Ben has.” disputed Jess, “He’s got two mothers. You just don’t have a father ‘cos your mother doesn’t speak to him any more.”

“Two mothers? – Like a mother and step-mother do you mean?” asked Lesley.

“Yes, well sort of, but they all live together,” put in another head appearing next to Jess “His sister is a junior – but she has a mother and a father. I’m Phil, by the way.”

“But not the same mother as either of Ben’s mothers.” Susan added.

“No, of course not.”

“Anyway, enough about him.” Susan disposed of the potential head boy and his complicated family and turned back to her neighbour. “Tell me more about yourself. I can tell you’re from America, but whereabouts?”

Meanwhile, the new Head of Catering and Kitchen staff at the Chalet School surveyed her domain with an eagle eye. She knew, without a doubt, that this job was perfect for her. The twins would get an excellent education at the Chalet School, along with their cousins, and she had a job she would love. Plenty of staff to oversee and, on meeting Matron Lloyd, the head of the domestic staff, she had been delighted to find someone whose ideas of cleanliness and tidiness matched her own rigorous standards. Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted.

“Mrs Bing, your new cleaning products have arrived. Shall I have them brought in here?”

“Yes please, Miggi.”

As the boxes of powders, sprays and polishes, along with the assortment of mops, cloths and brushes were carried into the kitchen, Monica knew that things could not get much better.

“… so Lesley, if you’ve got any questions about anything, just ask me and I’ll do my best to answer them.” Susan smiled at her as she finished talking.

“Well, there was one thing we wondered about. …”

“What’s that?”

“Well, our Dad read the prospectus, he wanted to know everything about the school, so he read the whole thing all the way through. And he says we have to be triangular.”

“Triangular?” Susan looked puzzled.

“Yes, it’s all in there. We thought if we could do it together, you know all three of us, we might be ok, because of triangles having three sides, but if you’re not a triplet how do you do it on your own? I’m probably ok, ‘cause I take after my Aunt Phoebe, and she’s very bendy, but Chandler would have problems being triangular on her own.”

“We don’t have to be triang… Oh!” light dawned on Susan’s face, “You mean we have to be trilingual!”

“It’s ok,” Lesley hissed to her triplets as they joined up again when they climbed down from the coach, “we don’t have to be triangular.”

“But what if I want to be?” protested Frank, as aggrievedly as he had protested that he didn’t want to be only a few days before.

“I don’t know, they didn’t say we couldn’t, just we don’t have to be. We have to be trilingual though.”

“Well isn’t ‘that just a fancy kind of triangle, like the kind with two sides the same length or the one where you do something with adding the two sides to get the diagonal?”

“No, I thought it was, but Susan explained it all to me. It means talking three different languages.”

Chandler looked worried at this, but Frank was unperturbed. “Oh, that’s ok, I can do that easily.”

“No you can’t”

“Can too.”

“Prove it.”

“Easy, I can talk American, and I can talk English, and I can talk Aunt Phoebe – Mum says she has her own language.”

“I can do that too then.” Chandler said, in a relieved voice. “So can you, Lesley.”

Any further discussion was curtailed by the arrival of a mistress to chivvy them to join the other pupils.

The bunny paid me a little visit yesterday :D

Miss Annersley’s ‘welcome (back) to school’ talk went largely over their heads, and afterwards they were grabbed by their sheepdogs. Geoff introduced Frank Junior Junior to a couple more boys their age, and Susan and Marie led Lesley and Chandler into the building. “Come on,” said Marie, “let’s find which dormies you’re in.”

“Dormies?” asked Lesley

“Dormitories – you know, where we sleep. I’m in Bluebell. We’ve got Cecil Maynard as our pree. She’s not bad, although she is one of the Many Maynards!” Susan rolled her eyes.

“What are the Many Maynards?” asked Lesley.

“I’ll tell you later – we’ve not time to go into it all now. Here we are at Bluebell – yes! You’re in here with me and Marie. I’m not sure where Chandler goes though. Ah – here’s Matey, she’ll know.” She turned towards the trim figure coming briskly along the corridor. “Please, Matron, which dormitory is Chandler Buffay in?”

Matron took a list out of her pocket. “Buffay … Chandler did you say?”

“Yes, Matron”

Matron scanned down the list. “Here we are. Chandler Buffay in Sycamore. Now hurry up and get your nightcases unpacked, please, there’s no time to waste.” She hurried off, already speaking to another pupil and didn’t hear Susan’s exclamation.

“But Matron, Sycamore is a boys’ dormitory!”

Geoff led Frank Junior Junior into Sycamore. “We’re in here. You need to unpack your case – just shove everything into your drawers.”

“Put them neatly,” warned Pat Courvoisier, “otherwise you’ll get into a row about it. Geoff just gets away with it because everyone just says ‘oh he’s just like his mother’ or ‘remember what Len was like’. The rest of us don’t have that advantage.”

Geoff grinned. “May as well get something from being the youngest in a long family – makes up for all the times I get told how perfectly they all did things!”

“Oh you poor boy!” exclaimed Pat throwing a balled up pair of socks at him, then dodging behind Frank Junior Junior.

A sock battle was soon in full progress, only to be ended when Ben Willick put in an appearance. “Come on you guys, stop messing around and unpack.” He said, deftly catching a pair of socks in one hand. “And who’s missing? We’ve got an empty cubicle here.”

“It’s another new boy.” Pat said. “Charlie or something like that.”

Ben looked at the bath rota on the back of the door. “No, there’s no Charlie. There’s a Chandler Buffay listed here though. Must be him.”

Frank Junior Junior looked aghast. “But it can’t be. Chandler is a girl.”

I figured their paths are unlikely to have crossed, as he's a few years older and on a different 'periphery' to the Friends group from them.

“Are you sure?” Ben asked. “I’ve got an Uncle Chandler. In fact, he’s married to my Aunt Monica, who has just got a job here.”

“We’ve got an Uncle Chandler too.” Frank Junior Junior said. “That’s who Chandler’s named after, although he’s not a proper uncle.”

“Even though she’s a girl?”

Frank Junior Junior nodded.

“That’s all very well,” interrupted Geoff, uninterested in this sideline, “but what are we going to do about having a girl put in with us?”

“I suppose we’d better tell Matron.” Pat said. “Unless …”

“Unless what?”

“Well, it might be quite a laugh to see how long it is before anyone notices.”

Ben looked at them, a glimmer of mischief in his eyes. “I’m going away before I hear anything else I shouldn’t.” It wouldn’t hurt them to have some fun discussing it, although they obviously were underestimating Matey’s eagle eye. Anyway, he had promised his Dad he would check on his younger sister and make sure she settled in ok.

If Monica's working there does that mean her twins are going to be in the kindergarten?

Thanks, Liz. I hope that there will be a free bed in a girls' dormitory for Chandler.

I've been reading stuff on the cbb for years but this is the first time I've felt moved to register and comment! I love it. It's SO funny. I can imagine Monica and Matron together. Although why doesn't Ben at least know of the triplets' existence? Especially when they mention Aunt Phoebe - I'm sure Ben must know Phoebe?

I hope there's going to be more.

'His sister is a junior'; wouldn't that make the twins juniors too? I just watched the episode where they're born, and it's mentioned in that that Emma is a one year old.

Loving it :)

If Emma's just in Juniors then mayve the twins are slightly too young or in kindergarten - a gap of 15 months or so could be two school years
