I think I must have a warren of plot bunnies living under my bed. I had no less than three new ideas last night. I'm going to attempt to get at least two written today. Anyway, enjoy! (Italicised text is taken from 'What Katy Did at School', though obviously some names have been changed.)

Already Madge was starting to regret agreeing to let the mischievous Rose Red join the Chalet School. They had had their fair share of naughty girls in the school in their time, and to be sure with Rose it was only a nice naughtiness, but she was the most persistent young girl Madge had ever met. No punishment seemed to have any effect on her whatsoever. She simply bounced back and, a few days later, would be in her next scrape.

Her latest was being retailed to the staff room by Matey, who had been on duty at the time, and who had faithfully dealt with the sinner afterwards. The bathrooms at the main Chalet had had to be put out of action for a few days while the water was turned off so that work could continue on the ditch Herr Braun was building around the outskirts of the Chalet. Thus, everyone had to march across to Le Petit Chalet twice a day to borrow their bathrooms. It was an extra nuisance for everyone, and the girls had grumbled among themselves a lot at the inconvenience.

One girl who protested more than the rest was Rose Red. But after they had exhausted almost every avenue of action they could take against the edict, it seemed that they would just have to put up with the state of affairs for the time being. That was until one day, just before “bath hour” as the time before Frühstück was now known, when she was gathered with her own great friends, Corney Flower, Evvy Lannis and Margia Stevens. Suddenly Rose exclaimed,

A bright idea strikes me!”

“Oh! what?” cried the other three; but Rose only pursed up her mouth, arched her eyebrows, and vanished into her own
cubicle, leaving the three in a pleasing state of anticipation. Reluctantly they separated to begin to gather their things, for Matey insisted on their bringing a towel, a sponge and soap with them across to Le Petit Chalet and back every day, and no girl had yet forgotten, fearful of Matey’s always caustic tongue.

The bathing party consisted of eight girls, with Matey for escort. They were half-way across the ground between the Chalet and Le Petit Chalet before Matey noticed that everybody was shaking with stifled laughter, except Rose, who walked along demurely, apparently unconscious that there was anything to laugh at. Matey looked sharply from one to another for a moment, then stopped short and exclaimed: “Rosamond Redding! how dare you?”

“What is it, ma’am?” asked Rose, with the face of a lamb.

“Your bath towel! your sponge!” gasped Matey.

“Yes, ma’am, I have them all,” replied the audacious Rose, putting her hand to her hat. There, to be sure, was the long crash towel, hanging down behind like a veil, while the sponge was fastened on one side like a great cockade; and in the front appeared a cake of pink soap, neatly pinned into the middle of a black velvet bow.

Matey seized Rose, and removed these ornaments in a twinkling. “We shall see what Madame thinks of this conduct,” she grimly remarked. Then, dropping the soap and sponge in her own pocket, she made Rose walk beside her as if she were a criminal in custody.

“I could cheerfully have eaten her,” remarked Matey later on, as she reclined in the staff room with a cup of coffee. Her colleagues shrieked with subdued laughter, but as one accord turned to Miss Bettany.

“How on earth did you deal with that?” they demanded. With a twinkle in her eye, Madge replied solemnly,

“Oh, I told her she must apologise to Matey and miss out on her Saturday night fun in favour of hemming sheets. I’ve also set her to write out, one hundred times, in her neatest handwriting, ‘I shall not be impertinent to members of staff’.”

“Well, let us hope that will solve the problem for the time being,” said Miss Maynard, but Matey only shook her head.

“If the noises I can hear at this moment are coming from where I think that they are, not likely,” she retorted, standing up and smoothing her starched uniform. “I shall go and see what the little dears are up to.”

And she departed, to read Rose Red and several others a lecture much needed on the evils of having pillow fights after the Lights Out bell had rung. Really, that girl, particularly when combined with the Quintette, was more trouble than she was worth.

Thank you, ChubbyMonkey. I agree that it all fits very well with What Katy Did at School, and Rose Red's idea was an original one for the CS!

I'd love to see their reaction if she was caught writing a letter to Berry Searles  .

Thanks ChubbyMonkey - you're inspired this week!
