The plot bunny struck again, as I was recovering from my op, so here goes. I'm posting this in here, because I think it will be a cross-over, but the plot bunny hasn't revealed all yet! :D

Not sure whether this will be a long or a short drabble, but here is the first part.

~+~

'So, Miss Renshaw, that's agreed then,' said Miss Annersley. 'For the next few months, you will come in every other week and work Thursday and Friday, whilst Rosalie is not here.'

'I'm very glad to be able to help out,' said Phyllis Renshaw. 'And Rosalie has explained everything very clearly to me. I'm sure there won't be any problems.'

'Good,' said Miss Annersley with a smile. 'Rosalie is a valued member of our staff and we wouldn't want to lose her, because we couldn't release her for this opportunity that has arisen.'

To explain this conversation let us go back a few weeks to a conversation that Rosalie had with Miss Annersley.

'Hilda, you know how much I love working here, but I have been offered an opportunity, which really is too good to miss. I can see that the experience I gain there will be very useful when I return to the school. But it means spending every other Thursday and Friday away, because it's too far to travel every day.'

'Maybe we can get someone in to keep the routine stuff going during those days. I certainly don't want to lose you.'

'And I don't want to leave,' said Rosalie. 'I'll put an advert in the local paper and see what response we get.'

As it turned out, they only had two responses, both from local women. One of them was clearly unsuitable, as she could not spell or write very well. The other, Miss Renshaw, proved to be the ideal candidate. And she had worked alongside Rosalie for several days, so that she was thoroughly prepared to take her place. Or as prepared as she could be, as she obviously could not be expected to gain Rosalie's encyclopaedic knowledge of the school and its former pupils in such a short time.

Now, it was the first week when Rosalie would be away. She packed a small case with the few things she knew she would need and Hilda dropped her off at Armiford station.

Thanks for your feedback and encouragement.

Here is the next bit, though I'm not sure how many of your questions will be answered! Have patience, in due course, all will be revealed.

~+~

Rosalie settled back into her seat in the train with a contented sigh. She was really looking forward to getting away from the school regularly and being in a totally different environment.

In many ways, she loved being at the school and at the hub of such a busy community. But she sometimes felt overlooked by new pupils, staff and parents, who did not fully appreciate the contribution she had made to the school, working quietly in the background for all these years. Oh, she never doubted that Hilda and Bill valued her work, or the more experienced staff, but she felt that some just saw her as a typist/overpaid stationery monitor.

Added to which, the school could become claustrophobic, because to totally escape, you had to get physically off the premises. Otherwise, you could be on call 24 hours a day. 'I need a life of my own, too,' she thought. 'I never quite realised it until now.'

Rosalie was so engrossed in her thoughts that she did not notice at first the young woman who got into her carriage. That was until she was poked in the chest by a large umbrella.

'I'm so sorry,' gasped the newcomer. 'I take this umbrella everywhere, you know. Such a useful thing to have around.'
'That's OK,' said Rosalie, laughing. 'Let me help you put it into the rack, then it will be out of our way.'

'Thank you. Are you going far? I'm going up to London to work as a nanny,' confided Rosalie's new friend. 'I'm so excited. It's my first time in the big city. My name is Mary, by the way.'

'Pleased to meet you, I'm Rosalie,' responded that lady. I'm going to London, too. I work in a school near here, but they've given me time off to take up a special post that I was offered.'

'That sounds exciting,' said Mary. 'Tell me more.'

I'm not sure where Mary came from, as I thought this drabble was going in a totally different direction, but she kind of popped in through the back (or should I say train) door. Excuse the pun!

This could lead to a double crossover.

~+~

Rosalie explained her new job to Mary. She would be working two days a fortnight as the personal assistant to a man who travelled extensively in Europe, promoting British firms..

'I'm so excited,' said Rosalie. 'I use my languages in school, of course, but to be actually corresponding with people abroad and maybe speaking to them on the telephone, that's something else. I already speak fluent French and German and some Spanish and Italian. I hope to improve a lot in the latter two.'

'What is this man's name?' asked Mary, in whose mind a suspicion was already forming.

'Mr Banks. He has a wife and two young children. You don't mean?........'

'Yes,' laughed Mary. 'That's the family for whom I will work as a nanny. I've heard the children can be a bit of a handful. They've scared quite a few nannies away already.'

'What fun to have met now, on the train. We can travel together all the way to their house.'

'I'm not sure about that,' said Mary. 'How brave are you? At nanny school, we were told that we should use our umbrellas to make a spectacular entrance to our assignments. But to be honest, I'm a bit nervous, and I don't know whether it would work. Do you fancy trying it with me?'

'Do you mean you can fly with that umbrella?' said Rosalie unbelievingly.

'So I am told, but only if the wind is blowing from the west. It acts like a kind of parachute, lifting you up high into the air for a short distance, then you float down at your destination. You have to do all sorts of scientific calculations to make sure it works properly. But the children love it. It seems like magic to them. If you're game, we could try and have a grand entrance for the two of us. The school gave us a spare umbrella in case anything went wrong.'

I'm assuming that Armiford is Hereford, as per tradition and that trains would have gone into Paddington, as they do now. If anyone knows differently, please let me know and I will change it!

~+~

Rosalie and her new friend spent the rest of the journey chatting. They discovered similar interests in books and music, in spite of the age difference.

'I would love to travel,' said Mary, 'but I've never had the opportunity. I do envy you your experiences in the Tirol. I haven't even been as far as Guernsey.'

'Never mind, you're still young. The chance may come. And at least you can 'fly', which is something I've never managed' laughed Rosalie.

'True,' agreed Mary with a laugh. 'Although you're about to learn!'

They happily shared their packed lunches and the bar of chocolate without which Rosalie never travelled far 'in case of emergencies'. As they got closer to London, the train started to fill up and others entered their carriage, so they were unable to have further discussions of any depth.

Finally, they arrived at Paddington. Rosalie quickly located a porter, who helped them take their luggage to a taxi. They got in and gave the address to the driver. It was only a short journey through busy streets. Mary, particularly, was impressed by the big houses, as she had never visited London before.

The taxi drew up outside a house with a large garden. Rosalie and Mary quickly hid their luggage, apart from the umbrellas in the shade of a large tree. Thankfully, no one saw them.

'Yes!' said Mary excitedly, having checked, 'the wind is blowing from the West, so it should work!'

In the train, Rosalie had helped Mary with her calculations, and they were almost certain that they had got them right. So all that remained was for them to find an open space for them to run, so that they could take off.

Fortunately, there was a park nearby which had an area designed for flying kites and this proved ideal for their purposes. Rosalie ran as fast as she could, trying to keep up with Mary, who was younger, and suddenly.... Whoosh! She was airborne.

It was an incredible feeling to have the wind blowing through your hair and almost dislodging your hat – 'Good job Joey isn't here,' thought Rosalie, 'her hairpins would never survive this onslaught!'

She dared to look down and was amazed to see how high they had soared. She followed Mary over the rooftops until they were above the garden of the Banks' house.

'Ready to land?' asked Mary, who was slightly breathless with all the excitement.

'Yes,' said Rosalie, wondering as she did so, what Hilda and Bill would make of this when she told them the story later. On second thoughts, she wasn't too sure what she was going to tell them anyway, as she was pretty sure they wouldn't believe her, if she told them the truth!

As instructed they twisted the handle of the umbrellas, which acted as a brake, and slowly and gracefully they descended onto the lawn. As they landed, two excited children, a girl of about 8 and a boy of about 6 rushed out of the house, closely followed by a lady, who presumably was the cook of the establishment, since she was brandishing a large rolling pin.

In case there is anyone out there who has actually read the book on which the film is based, I should say that I have only ever seen the film (many times!), so this crossover is based on that. I am sure there are differences, as there always are.

I couldn't remember what the little girl in the film was called, so I've called her Karen, but I have a feeling that that was the name of the actress who played her. Since this is a crossover, I don't suppose it matters so much! :D

Thanks for your lovely comments and encouragement. I'm glad you're all enjoying it so far. Do let me know if you want to see more CS and less Mary Poppins!

~+~

'Come back here, you horrible little brats! I'll teach you to switch my good cooking oil for cod liver oil!' yelled the cook. The two children dodged her portly figure easily and she was not fast enough to catch them.

Suddenly, the children caught sight of Rosalie and Mary. 'It's true then, you do come by umbrella. That's magic. How do you do it?' asked Michael.

'If I could explain it, it wouldn't be magic, would it?' said Mary. 'This is my friend Rosalie, who has come to work for your father. And you must be the cook,' she added, turning to that lady.

'I hope you can bring these two young hooligans under some sort of control,' said that worthy lady. 'They think they rule the roost around here and no one can stop them. The last 6 nannies have only lasted a very short time. One didn't even last an hour.'

'We put frogs in her bed,' laughed Michael. 'You should have heard her scream.'

'Well, we shall have no more of that sort of behaviour, thank you,' said Mary firmly. 'Let's go inside and you can show me where everything is.'

They all went inside, where they were forced to part, for Rosalie was met by the housekeeper, who took her to meet Mr Banks. He took some time to explain what her duties would be.

'So, you are confident you can handle this?'' he asked finally.

'Oh, yes. I'm looking forward to getting involved and to corresponding with people from all over Europe. Do they ever come to visit?'

'They come to England, yes, but very few actually come to the house. Now, to the hours: you will work normal office hours, which I assume you are used to.'

'Of course,' said Rosalie, a little disappointed, as she had been hoping to see more of Mary and the children. But at least it seemed she would have more free time than she ever had at the school. Perhaps she would be able to spend some of it with Mary.

Suddenly from overhead came the sound of a loud crash. 'What the...?' spluttered Mr Banks.

'Perhaps we should go and investigate,' said Rosalie.

She ran lightly up the stairs and turned left towards the sound. At the end of the corridor was a suite of rooms, which was obviously the nursery suite. On entering the nursery, she found Michael desperately trying to click his fingers.

'I can't do it, I can't do it!' he yelled in frustration. He was surrounded by heaps of toys, books and clothes and drawers and cupboards were opening and closing themselves. One particularly heavy drawer had come out of the chest and was in the middle of the floor, which had caused the noise which Rosalie and Mr Banks had heard.

Across the room, his sister, Jane, was happily clicking away and the toys, books, and clothes were depositing themselves in their proper places. There was no sign of Mary.

'Where is that woman? Surely she can't have left already?' said Mr Banks.

At that moment, Mary appeared and took control. 'That's enough!' she said firmly to the misbehaving toys, books, clothes, drawers and cupboards. And suddenly, there was silence and perfect order was magically restored.

'What is the meaning of this?' demanded Mr Banks. 'You've only been here 5 minutes and already chaos reigns!'

'With respect, Mr Banks, the chaos was already here. We have been sorting it out.' replied Mary.

'Very well,' he said. 'But you need to know that Miss Dene and I will be working very hard whilst she is here, and there must be no further interruptions of that kind.'

'There won't be,' said Mary with confidence.

Here is the next bit. Obviously, I'm not an expert on sweeping chimneys, so I had to go on bits that I picked up from the internet. By the time of writing, there would have been no boys sent up the chimneys (as in The Water Babies), as this was made illegal in the mid-19th century.

If anyone out there has inside knowledge of chimney sweeping, please pm me with any glaring inaccuracies and I will correct them!

~+~

The next day dawned sunny and bright. Rosalie watched with envy out of the office window, as Mary and her charges headed off out for a walk.

'Miss Dene, Miss Dene!' said Mr Banks impatiently. 'We have plenty of work to do. No day-dreaming, please.'

Rosalie dragged herself back to the matter in hand with an effort. The fact that she was endeavouring to translate what Mr Banks described as 'a fascinating article on the German steel industry as compared to the British one', did not help at all, because she found it utterly boring in German and doubted whether she could make it any more interesting in English.

Meanwhile, Michael and Jane were enjoying the freedom of the open air and chattered away happily to Mary.

'Our other nannies always made us work in the mornings, even when the weather was as glorious as this. Mornings were for work and afternoons for walks, but often it rained in the afternoons, so we got no walk at all. Just boring drill as exercise,' Jane explained.

'We must make the most of the weather,' said Mary. 'Besides, this walk can form part of your lessons. If you keep your eyes and ears open, you can learn lots of things on a walk and most of them won't appear in your text-books.'

At that moment a wolf-whistle was heard. When the trio turned towards the sound, they saw a man covered in soot and carrying a brush with a very long handle.

'Why, Bert!' said Mary. 'What are you doing here? It's lovely to see you.'

'Sweeping a few chimneys to earn my living said Bert. 'I got bored in Armiford. I was born in London, you know, but my parents moved to Armiford when I was a nipper. First chance I got, I moved back. You can't keep a cockney away from the sound of Bow Bells.'

'Children, say good morning to Mr.... what was your surname?' asked Mary.
'That don't matter. Bert will do just fine,' replied Bert.

'Good morning, Bert. Pleased to meet you,' chorused the children, who had had good manners instilled into them from an early age.

''Tis a pleasure to meet you, too,' said Bert. 'Me and Mary go back a long way to when we was kids together...'

'Now, now, Bert!' laughed Mary. 'Please don't give away all my secrets!'

'I heard what Mary was saying about you learning things that aren't in your books. I never was one for much book learning. How would you like to see me at work?' said Bert.

'Oh, yes please!' said Michael and Jane eagerly. 'May we, Mary, pleeeaaassse?'

'All right, children. But you must be careful not to get your clothes dirty. I won't have you walking through the streets like a pair of urchins.'

Bert led them to a nearby house where he was due to sweep the chimneys. He was let in by the parlour maid, who showed him to the drawing room, where the fire had been smoking badly. Bert covered the floor and furniture with dust sheets to minimise the mess. Then he stuck the end of his brush up the chimney towards the flue, adding additional poles until he had the length required. Suddenly a cloud of dust, along with a bird's nest flew out of the chimney, covering the onlookers with dust. The children and Mary coughed and spluttered.

'That should do the trick,' said Bert with an air of satisfaction. 'Now let's tidy up.' He was as good as his word, and soon not a speck of dust was to be seen in the room. However, the same cannot be said for Mary and the children.

'Thank you for a most educational lesson, Bert,' said Mary. 'I think we'd better call a cab. We certainly can't be seen walking through the streets like this.'

'That was fun!' chorused Michael and Jane. 'Can we do it again, some time?'

'I think not,' said Bert hastily. 'But look out for me on your walks. I'm sure we'll meet again.'

Thanks, When I was a child the sweep had another cloth with a hole in which he hung from the mantlepiece to cover the opening. The poles where put up through the hole and someone stood outside to say when the brush cam out of the chimney. The soot was collected in the cloth over the fire opening and this stopped to much going into the room.

Thanks for your positive comments. Here is the next part.

~+~

The following morning passed all too quickly for Rosalie, who was enjoying her freedom from the confines of the Chalet School. Although she had not done much translation work previously, she found that her German and French were well up to the demands of her new job. On her second day she was given an article to translate on the French automobile industry. She found that, having spent her time at school translating literary and historical texts, translating purely factual texts was much easier.

Shortly before lunch, she discovered that Mr Banks was going to a meeting that afternoon and would not return before the end of the working day. 'I expect that translation to be finished before you leave for Wales,' he told Rosalie.

'Oh, it will be,' said Rosalie confidently. What she did not tell him was that it was already almost finished. She did not want him to give her any more work, because she hoped that, in his absence, she might be able to spend some time with Mary and the children.

'Very well,' said Mr Banks. 'I know you are off back to Wales early in the morning, so I shall see you in two weeks' time.'

Rosalie finished the translation and put the cover on her typewriter with a sigh of relief. Now, to find Mary and the children!

The trio had been unable to go for their usual walk that morning, because of the weather, but once lunch was over, the sun began to shine again, so they prepared themselves for their outing.

'May I come with you?' asked Rosalie. I've finished all the work Mr Banks gave me to do and he's at a meeting all afternoon, so I'm free.'

'Of course you can come with us!' chorused the children. 'We'd love to have you, wouldn't we, Mary?'

'Yes, do come,' agreed Mary. 'It will be nice to have some adult company.'

'I wonder whether we'll see Bert today,' said Michael. 'He's such fun,' He and Jane proceeded to tell Rosalie all about their previous encounter with Bert, which made Rosalie laugh out loud.

Now Bert's real love was art and his main occupation was as a 'screever' or pavement artist. He only swept chimneys in order to feed and clothe himself.

As they walked along, they came across Bert in the park, drawing one of his street pictures on the paving slabs there. The scene which he drew looked strangely familiar to Rosalie.

As they approached the drawing, a strange feeling came over Rosalie, Mary, Michael and Jane. It was as if they were being drawn into the picture. Sure enough, they suddenly found that the streets of London had disappeared and they were in a different place entirely.

Edited once to better reflect the fact that street artists generally use chalk, rather than paint to produce their pictures.

The CS, maybe? Perhaps back to the days in Tyrol when Rosalie was a schoolgirl.

Or, of course, somewhere else entirely!

Here is another update. Glad you're enjoying this. Well done to those who guessed we were heading for Tyrol!

However, the school seems to have changed a bit. :D

Still don't know where this is going, but it's fun to write, so hope it's fun to read!

~+~

Rosalie, Mary and the children found themselves in the Chalet School, but not in the present time, but in the early days, when Rosalie herself had been a pupil. They were in the Tyrol.

'I remember this place,' said Rosalie. 'It's where I used to go to school and where I worked until we had to flee because of the war.' She looked round reminiscently. 'What I don't understand is why we've been brought back here.'

As she spoke, a crocodile of schoolgirls, dressed in the Chalet School uniform, appeared, walking sedately along the shore of the lake. They took no notice of Rosalie and co, apparently being totally unaware of their presence.

'Curiouser and curiouser,' said Rosalie. 'That group includes Corney and Evvy. Surely they would recognise me, even if the others didn't.' For, to her surprise, the group included a large number of girls, whom she didn't know. And the two accompanying mistresses were totally unknown to her.

'Excuse me,' she said to one of the mistresses, who was just passing her. 'Can you tell me what school this is?'

'Why, the Chalet School, of course,' answered that lady with an American drawl. 'We've become well-established in this area, since our foundation by Miss Bettany 5 years ago.'

'But I thought you were an English school, run on British lines,' said Rosalie.

'Not since Mr Flower bought out Miss Bettany, who wanted to concentrate on her other business concerns,' replied Miss Taylor, for that was her name.

'May I ask who your secretary is?' asked Rosalie.

'Sure, isn't it Nell Wilson?' answered Miss Taylor. 'May I ask what your interest is?'

'I knew the Chalet School once and was a pupil there. But it seems to have changed a lot,' said Rosalie with more than a touch of sadness.

'Why not come back with us and see the school? You'll be impressed with the changes that Mr Flower has made. Your friends are welcome to come too.'

'You're British, aren't you?' added her companion, 'maybe you can help solve our mystery.'

'Oh, we love mysteries!' chorused Michael and Jane.

Edited once to correct punctuation.

Thanks for your lovely comments. Here is the next bit.

I'm going to be very busy for the next week or so, but will update when I can.

~+~

Rosalie, Mary and the children accompanied the mistresses and the girls back to the school. They were given a grand tour, where many of the changes were explained. Rosalie was not too sure about some of the progressive, American ideas, such as pupils being able to learn what they wanted, when they wanted, and the trilingual system becoming optional. She loved the idea of the indoor swimming pool and the well-equipped gym, though. And she wished the hot showers had been available in her day, rather than the inevitable cold baths.

The prefects seemed to run much of the school, too, since there was a student council, chaired by the head girl, which discussed any problems that arose and dealt with most miscreants. 'So what do the staff do?' Rosalie wondered. 'And what is the mystery?'

Miss Taylor introduced her to Nell Wilson, who, perhaps fortunately, failed to recognise Rosalie. Indeed, Rosalie did not recognise the woman she was introduced to, as she seemed to be a very different character from the one Rosalie knew and loved. She was tall and striking, but at the same time, very softly spoken and Rosalie could not imagine her being at all sarcastic.

'As part of our programme, we organise exchange trips for our American pupils who want to experience family life in 'good old England',' explained Miss Wilson. 'We still have a few continental pupils, and many of their parents are also keen on the exchange programme. Miss Bettany has taken charge of this side of our activities and makes all the arrangements through her contacts in England. The problem is that the last two girls we have sent failed to return to the school. They were escorted to the boat train in London and people were waiting to meet them at Calais. However, the girls never arrived. They seem to have disappeared on the boat or perhaps on the train. A full search was mounted, but not a trace was found of them.'

'How strange,' said Rosalie. 'Did you inform the police?'

'Of course,' replied Miss Wilson. 'But searches and enquiries in London and Dover have proved fruitless. They seem to have disappeared into thin air. It's very worrying, because we can't send any more pupils until these are found.' This last remark was an indication of where Miss Wilson's real priorities lay, because in truth she and Madge were making a tidy profit out of this sideline.

'And their parents will be angry if they find out. They'll probably withdraw the girls from the school, assuming they are found,' added Miss Taylor.

'You mean you haven't told them?' said Rosalie in astonishment. 'Surely they have a right to know.'

'We've been hoping they would turn up safe and sound, but now the holidays are approaching, so we have to do something.'

'But how can we help?' asked Mary.

'We have the addresses of where they were staying in London. Maybe you could visit them and try to find out what happened.'

'Oh, please let's try to find them,' cried Michael, who with Jane had been sitting very quietly up to this point.

'I can't make any promises, but give me the addresses, and we'll see what we can do,' said Rosalie.

Miss Wilson promptly handed over the relevant information and suddenly Mary, Rosalie and the children were back in the London park. The quartet walked home in silence, each engrossed in their own thoughts.

I think the changes are due to being an American school. Mr Flower didn't like the idea of his darling Cornelia suffering cold baths for the rest of her school life.

Thanks for your feedback and encouragement.

Sorry for the delay, but I've been very busy this week and will be very busy this weekend. I will post another update when I can.

~+~

Rosalie was quite sad to say good-bye to Mary and the children next day, as she knew she wouldn't be back for two weeks.

'Don't you go solving this mystery without me,' she said. 'I don't want to miss out on all the fun!'

'We won't,' promised Michael and Jane. 'Hurry back, we will miss you.'

****

Back at the Chalet School, Rosalie found the school abuzz with Joey's latest.

'She's going to be busy again soon. The doctors think it may be triplets again. She has to rest and she's not allowed to come near the school,' Miss Renshaw informed Rosalie, breathlessly.

'More triplets? That would be fun, since her first triplets are only a couple of years old,' mused Rosalie.

Rosalie was happy to discover that Phyllis had coped very well in her absence and that there was no backlog of work to cope with, as she had feared.

'I'm really enjoying working here,' said Phyllis. 'The staff are so kind. But those Middles...'

'What have they been up to now?' asked Rosalie with a laugh. 'They can be a real pain at times.'

'I went to the stationery cupboard to get some more blotting paper, as we had run out. Of course, I used the master key, so I didn't have to disturb the stationery prefect. Unfortunately, I left the key in the door and I had to go right inside to reach the blotting paper, which was on a shelf at the back. Two of the middles were passing and I guess the temptation was too great. They locked me in!'

'Betty and Elizabeth, I suppose,' said Rosalie, trying not to laugh.

'Indeed,' said Phyllis. 'I banged on the door for what seemed like ages before anyone came to let me out. Though I suppose it was only a few minutes. Then I had to wait while they sought out the stationery prefect, who was playing tennis. Those naughty middles took the key with them.'

'So what happened then?' asked Rosalie with interest.

'It was Miss Annersley, who found me and it didn't take her long to find out who the culprits were. She had them in her study and I don't know what she said to them, but they were truly sorry when they came to apologise to me later. They have to spring clean the stationery cupboard in their free time, too.'

'Oh, Hilda has plenty of experience of dealing with mischievous middles!' agreed Rosalie.

‘Tell me about your time in London,’ said Phyllis. ‘I would love to visit the city, but I’ve never been further than Bristol.’

‘Well, I met this lovely lady on the train and it turned out that she was going to be a nanny to the children of the man I am working with, so we were able to travel together. And I’ve been on a couple of outings with them.’ She told Phyllis about their first encounter with Bert, as she felt this had been the most believable of their adventures.

‘Sounds like fun,’ said Phyllis. ‘What about the work?’

‘It’s been mostly translation so far, which I’ve found quite easy, because it’s been factual articles, not literary or philosophical.’

The staff welcomed Rosalie back with open arms, for they had missed her quiet efficiency and warm personality. They had done their best to include Phyllis in their staff-room gossip, but it was difficult, because she didn't know much about the background and history of the school, its staff and pupils.

'Maybe it's not a bad thing for me to be away for a while,' thought Rosalie as she climbed into bed that night. 'It seems to have made everyone appreciate me more. I wonder what's happening in London. And where those girls have disappeared to.'

The next two weeks passed by quickly and without any spectacular incidents, apart from the usual Middles' mischief. They managed to play up in prep at regular intervals, their latest effort started with Elizabeth and Betty playing noughts and crosses instead of doing the history with which they should have been occupied. Corney Flower, who was on duty, dealt faithfully with them, condemning them to return to complete their prep after Abendessen. 'And if you still don't finish it, it serves you right, if you get into a row with the mistress,' she rounded off her lecture for good measure.

'What these Middles don't seem to realise,' she confided to her fellow prefects with a laugh, when recounting the tale later, 'is that the reason we're so on top of their little pranks, is that we were just as bad as them at their age!'

'Just as well,' laughed Polly in agreement. 'Otherwise, we'd never be able to keep order.'

***

Rosalie was really looking forward to returning to London and had to suffer some good natured teasing from her colleagues.

'I do believe you've found yourself a young man!' said Con Stewart.

Rosalie blushed, because she had secretly been quite drawn to Bert. 'How could I have found one in two days? My employer is middle-aged and balding, besides being a married father of two,' she protested.

'Methinks the lady doth protest too much,' laughed Con. But she had the sense to leave it at that, knowing that Rosalie would not tell her any more, unless she wanted to.

***

Back in London, she was welcomed rapturously by Michael and Jane. 'We're glad you're back,' said Jane. 'Mary wouldn't let us investigate the mystery without you, because she said that it's your adventure too.'

'I'm glad,' said Rosalie. 'I've been wondering what had happened whilst I've been away.'

'We've been working very hard at our lessons and we haven't seen Bert once on our walks. Maybe he's waiting until he knows you're back,' said Jane.

'What nonsense!' said Rosalie. 'He's probably just busy.'

The next day and a half Rosalie was kept busy by Mr Banks, who had had a very successful trip to Paris during her absence. Consequently, there was a great deal of correspondence to be translated into French and neatly typed.

Once again, she found that Mr Banks had an appointment on the Friday afternoon, so she would be free, so long as she had finished the work he gave her to do.

When she sought out Mary and the children after lunch, she discovered them making plans for their outing. ‘You can come with us then?’ asked Mary with a smile.

‘Yes,’ said Rosalie. ‘I should probably feel guilty about not working this afternoon, but it’s much too nice a day to stay inside and I have finished all the work Mr Banks gave me to do.’

‘Wonderful!’ chorused Michael and Jane. ‘Now we can continue with our adventure. So where do we start?’

‘I suggest that we start by going to the addresses Miss Wilson gave us.’ said Rosalie. ‘Even if the girls are not there, someone may be able to help us.’

And so they set off. They had to take the tube to the first address, as it was too far to walk. Michael and Jane were thrilled, because this was a new experience for them. They were used to being driven everywhere by their father. They got very excited and engaged all the nearby passengers in their conversations.

‘Now, now, children. Calm down,’ admonished Mary. ‘We don’t want everyone knowing all about our affairs.’

Soon, they arrived at their stop and went up to street level. The kind man at the ticket office had told them that the street they were looking for was very close by. ‘Just cross the road and bear left. It’s the second street on the right.’

Rosalie thanked the man and they found the street without any problems. However, when they reached number 34, they discovered that it was not a house, as they had been expecting, but an office block.

ETA Oops, I see the autocensor is still working!

At that moment, they heard a familiar whistle.

‘Bert!’ chorused the children. ‘We’ve missed you.’

‘I’ve missed you too,’ said Bert, who was obviously on one of his screever days, because he was carrying his art materials and not a chimney brush. ‘The people who own this building asked me to do a scene on the pavement outside, because they’re having a grand opening. I just hope it don’t rain,’ he added, with a gloomy look at the sky.

‘What business do these people run?’ asked Mary with interest.

‘Well, I don’t rightly know,’ said Bert. ‘It’s all a bit mysterious. ‘They asked me to do a fairground scene. But they don’t look like ordinary fairground folk. Much too posh for that.’

Mary, Rosalie and the children watched in fascination as Bert took out his chalks and started to draw the scene.

‘Oh, look,’ said Jane. ‘There’s a carousel with horses. That’s my favourite ride.’

‘Why don’t we take a closer look?’ said Bert. So saying, he took Michael and Jane by the hand and stepped onto the now completed picture.

All at once, the scene changed. Instead of in a busy London street, they found themselves in the countryside. And just over the next hill, they could hear the faint sounds of a fairground.

‘Let’s go and explore,’ said Michael eagerly. ‘I like the dodgems best.’

‘OK,’ agreed Mary with a laugh. ‘But you two must be on your best behaviour. Otherwise, you won’t be allowed to go on any of the rides.’

The children raced excitedly ahead, whilst Bert, Rosalie and Mary caught up on their news.

‘I hoped I might see you again, Miss,’ said Bert.

‘It’s nice to see you as well,’ replied Rosalie, blushing slightly. ‘What have you been doing these last two weeks? Mary and the children said they hadn’t seen you.’

‘Oh, this and that,’ replied Bert. ‘Keeping an eye out for opportunities to practise my art, mostly. Like this chance today. But I’d rather spend the afternoon with you at the fair. That’s much more fun.’

As he spoke, they came over the brow of the hill and before them lay a fairground, complete with carousel and Ferris wheel, though there didn’t seem to be any dodgems, much to Michael’s disappointment.

Edited once to exchange the word 'scrivener' for 'screever' or street artist. The former means something totally different.

Sorry if it's against policy to spree your own drabble, but I couldn't find anything specifically against it!

~+~

‘Wheeeeeeeeee this is fun!’ cried Michael. ‘I wonder where we’re going.’

Well he might ask, because the horses seemed to be taking their own route over fields and hedges, with no regard for the country lanes than ran between the fields.

‘Whoaaa,’ cried Bert suddenly. ‘I think I saw someone hiding in the trees over there.’ He pointed to a nearby copse. ‘I wonder who it could be, here in the middle of nowhere.’

The horses came to a sudden stop. So sudden that Jane almost fell off and had to be pulled back into the saddle by Rosalie, who was fortunately close by.

The party dismounted from their horses and headed for the copse. The leader of the horses promised to wait until they returned, having surprised them by his ability to talk with a thick but perfectly understandable accent.

As they approached the copse, they saw two small figures trying, not very successfully, to hide behind the trees.

‘Don’t be afraid,’ said Mary gently. ‘We’ve come to help you.’

First one girl, then another slowly emerged from behind the trees. Both had obviously been sleeping rough for a few days. They were dirty, their clothes were torn and they looked extremely hungry.

‘We thought you were the carousel man coming to take us back to the fair,’ said the older girl.

‘Do you have anything to eat?’ asked the second girl. ‘I’m starving.’

Michael and Jane produced two large bars of chocolate, which they had been keeping as a treat. They felt they should give them to the girls. The girls are them ravenously.

‘Let’s get you to safety,’ said Mary. ‘Then you can tell us what all this is about.’

‘But the horses might just take us back to the fairground,’ said Michael.

‘Oh no, ve von’t,’ said the leader of the horses. ‘Ve hate our master. He is fery cruel to us. We haf to vork long hours wizout food or vater. And some of zose who come on ze ride are fery heavy. Zey hurt our backs.’

Instead of returning to the fairground, the horses agreed to take the party to the nearest village, where they could rest and have a good meal. Lucinda and Mary Beth, for those were the two girls’ names, got up behind Michael and Jane, which their horses said was fine, because they were the lightest.

When they reached the village, they all thanked the horses for their kindness.

‘You’re most velcome,’ said Bree, the leader. ‘Don’t vorry about us. Now that ve are free of ze fairground, ve vill make a quiet life in the country wiz our families.’

In the village they found a little café that served good food, so they went in and ordered meals. Whilst they were eating, no one asked many questions, but once the meal was almost finished and even Mary Beth and Lucinda were declaring that they couldn’t possibly eat another thing, Rosalie said: ‘Now girls. Tell us your story. How did you come to be in the middle of nowhere, so far from home’ – for she knew from their accents that they were American – ‘and what is this about the carousel man?’

Mary Beth, as the older of the two girls, took the lead in telling their story, although Lucinda chipped in with bits that she had forgotten. Pretty soon the others had a fairly clear picture of what had happened.

The girls were cousins, Mary Beth’s mother being the sister of Lucinda’s father. They had grown up together in a New York and at the age of 13, Mary Beth had been sent to the new American school on the continent. Her father already spent a lot of his time in Europe on business and he sometimes took his children with him for a holiday, so this was not quite a strange to her as it might have been.

Lucinda had been entranced by Mary Beth’s tales of the American school set in the Austrian Tyrol and begged her parents to be allowed to join her as soon as she was old enough – she was a year younger than her cousin. Lucinda had arrived at the school a year before and they were both thoroughly enjoying their time there.

When the opportunity to visit ‘good old England’ had come up, the girls’ parents had jumped at the chance, reasoning that since the girls had already travelled so far, they might as well experience this as well. The two girls were part of the third party from the school to travel to England.

The first part of their stay had passed without anything unusual happening. They stayed together with a family who lived near Windsor and they enjoyed going on days out to the Castle, to London and to Oxford. The family had been very kind to them, treating them like the daughters they had never had – they had 5 sons, all now grown up with families of their own.

It was on the return journey from Windsor that things had begun to go wrong. The family had put them on the Paddington train at Windsor. On arrival in London, they were to be met by someone from the agency, who would escort them across London to Charing Cross, where they would catch the boat train for Dover.

At Paddington, they were met by a smart-looking, middle-aged lady, who escorted them to a waiting taxi whilst dealing efficiently with a porter and their luggage. The girls had no idea of the layout of London, having only spent a day there, but they became a little concerned when, despite the traffic being light, their journey lasted over 30 minutes. And when the taxi finally drew up, it was not outside Charing Cross station, but outside the office block mentioned earlier.

At first, they weren't too worried, because Mrs James seemed like a kind lady and she explained that they wanted to ask them a few questions about their trip, to make sure that everything had been all right and to help other participants in the scheme. But from the moment they entered the building and went up to the third floor by lift, Mary Beth began to feel uneasy, although she couldn't explain why.

On arrival at the third floor, they were shown into a small waiting room and told to stay there until someone came to fetch them. There were some children's comics on a coffee table in the room, so the two girls settled down to read and wait.

After a few minutes, a man came into the room. The girls looked up from their reading and Lucinda decided immediately that she did not like him. There was something shifty about him and she did not like the way that he looked at them.

'Hello, girls,' said the man in a gruff voice. 'How did you enjoy your time with the Jones family?'

'We had a lovely time, thank you,' said Mary Beth. 'But we're looking forward to going back to school.'

'I thought girls of your age didn't like school,' said the man. 'My daughter hates school and makes every excuse she can to get out of going. Not that I let her get away with it too often,' he added with an unpleasant laugh.

'Can we go now, please?' said Mary Beth. 'I think we will miss the boat train, if we stay here much longer.'

'Oh, you're not going on the boat train,' said the man. 'You're coming with me. Wouldn't you like to meet my daughter and see some more of the English countryside?'

'Another time, perhaps,' said Mary Beth. 'We really do have to go, now!'

'You're going nowhere!' said the man, grabbing Lucinda in a vice-like grip. 'Your little friend is staying with me. And you don't want to leave her on her own, do you?'

Lucinda struggled and kicked out at the man, but it was futile, as he was much stronger than her. 'Don't leave me, Mary Beth, please!' she cried.

'Of course I won't!' replied that young lady with more courage in her voice than she felt in truth.

The man, assisted by Mrs |James, took the two girls down the back stairs of the building and out to a waiting car. The girls were loaded unceremoniously into the car and it drove off at high speed.

Apologies to Abi and anyone else who is waiting with bated breath to find out the 'why' of all of this. The plot bunny only explained it to me late last night!

~+~

A couple of hours later, the car arrived at the fairground, where it drew up outside one of the workers' caravans.

'We're here, Molly,' shouted Bob, for that was the man's name. 'I've brought the girls to see you.'

A woman emerged from the caravan. She was small and plump and had probably once been pretty, but what struck Mary Beth was the deep sadness in her eyes. 'Come in, come in,' she said. 'I dare say this is a little different from what you're used to, but you're very welcome here.'

'But we can't stay,' said Mary Beth. 'We have to get back to our school. They're expecting us.'

'Never mind about that, now,' said Bob. 'You will stay here as long as we say.'

Molly had prepared a simple meal for them, which they ate hungrily. Afterwards, Bob showed them round the fairground and especially the carousel, for which he was responsible. 'It's very quiet now,' he said. 'But just wait until this evening. The place will be thronging with people. Would you like a ride on the horses now?' he added more gently, because at heart he really was a kind man, who loved children. But life had treated him and his wife very badly, which is why he had taken the desperate step of kidnapping the girls.

'Yes, please, said Lucinda. 'The carousel is my favourite ride. How much does it cost?'

'You're my guests. Don't worry about that,' said Bob.

The girls really enjoyed their ride on the carousel, so much so, that Bob gave them a double turn.

'When will we meet your daughter?' asked Mary Beth, when they returned to the caravan.

Bob and Molly looked at each other. Then Molly burst into tears and rushed outside, heedless of the fact that it was pouring with rain.

'I'm sorry,' said Mary Beth. 'I didn't mean to upset your wife.'

'It's not your fault,' said Bob. 'The truth is that our daughter died in an accident on the carousel just a year ago. Molly's never got over it and she still blames me. That's why I applied to the agency to take some of you girls for a couple of weeks. I thought it might help. But we were just too late and you had all been allocated to other families. When I explained the situation to Mrs James, she agreed that you could come for a couple of days.'

'Oh, that's OK then,' said Mary Beth. 'I don't suppose it will matter too much, if we're just a couple of days late in returning to the school. You do intend to return us after a couple of days, don't you?' she added, confused by the look on Bob's face.

'How can I, now that you're here?' answered Bob. 'I'll get into trouble with the police for kidnapping and be sent to prison. How will Molly survive without me?' For, since Susan, their daughter, had been killed, Molly had refused to leave the caravan and relied on Bob for everything.

The next few days passed very slowly for Mary Beth and Lucinda. They tried to make the best of the situation, visiting other caravans and rides on the fairground and helping out where they could.'. Bob introduced them to everyone as his nieces, who were staying for a few days, and they did not contradict him as they could not see an alternative at this stage.

Molly took care of their physical needs, but even Lucinda sensed that she really did not welcome their presence. It reminded Molly too much of what she had lost. Bob, however, seemed unaware of his wife's growing resentment He worked long hours on the fair, this being his own way of coping with his loss.

In the long, dark hours of the night, Molly and Bob turned their backs on each other in bed, so lost in their own grief that they were unable to reach out to each other. Sometimes, the girls heard Molly sobbing. At first, Lucinda wanted to go to her, but |Mary Beth discouraged her. After all, what could she do or say that would help? Especially since their presence was not helping Molly.

One evening, after they had been there a week, Mary Beth and Lucinda were whispering together after they had gone to bed.

'We can't go on like this,' said Lucinda. 'We need to go back to school. Goodness knows what Mom and Pop have been told. It's not even as if our being here is helping Molly. In some ways, I think it's making it harder for her to come to terms with Susan's death.'

'I know,' said Mary Beth. 'I have an idea. You know that between 2 and 4, the fairground is quiet. It's closed to the public and all the workers take a break.'

'You mean we should try to escape during that time? But where would we go? And how? We're miles from anywhere.'

'I don't know. But we have to do something. Let's put by as much food as we can carry. There's always plenty, so no one will miss it. Peggy will probably give us some of her cakes, if we ask. She knows we love them.'

Peggy was the wife of Ron, who ran the Ferris wheel, one of the other popular rides at the fair. The girls loved going up to the top in the chairs where they could see for miles around.

The girls laid their plans carefully and decided to make a run for it in two days' time. In the meantime, they collected together what food they could to fit into their small backpacks. They rightly decided that it was impractical to take their cases.

The following day, Mary Beth and Lucinda waited until everything was quiet both in the caravan, apart from Bob's snores, and on the fairground not a soul was to be seen. They hoisted their backpacks onto their backs and quietly let themselves out of the caravan.

They had no clear idea of which direction to head in. At first they followed the road, but they decided that was too risky in case Bob came after them, so they headed across the fields, climbing over gates and even pushing through hedges on occasion. Not surprisingly, they soon got completely lost. Both girls were experienced walkers, have been on many rambles with the Chalet School, and they knew enough to ration their food sensibly, since they did not know when they would find some more. Mary Beth had had the foresight to fill a couple of large bottles with water, but that soon began to run out.

And then, the rain began. Not just a shower, but a real downpour, and the girls got absolutely soaked. That was when they thankfully took refuge in the copse, the thick trees providing some shelter from the storm. And it was there, the following day, after the rain had stopped, that Mary, Bert, Rosalie, Michael and Jane found them.

Post subject:  Re: Rosalie's Days Off - Updated 18/5/10 page 6

I can’t actually remember how Mary and co got back to the ‘real world’ in the film, so I’ve had to use my imagination! Though I think there are shades of CS Lewis (and maybe the Tardis!) in this version.

~+~

Once their tale was told, the girls were anxious to return as quickly as possible to the Chalet School. But Mary felt it would be wiser to take them back to London first for a hot bath and a good night’s sleep. So back to London they went, with the aid of another of Bert’s drawings.

Fortunately, Mr and Mrs Banks were away for the night, so they never found out about their extra guests. The servants were very kind to the girls and made a great fuss of them. They washed their clothes and hung them up to dry on the pulley, which hung high above the kitchen range.

The girls were very happy to have hot baths and settle down in nice warm beds, after their adventures in the countryside. They soon fell asleep and slept soundly until morning.

Next morning, they all met up with Bert again to discuss how they could get the girls back to the Chalet School. Rosalie had arranged to travel back to Wales on the Sunday, so she did not have to rush back.

‘Would one of your special drawings work?’ asked Rosalie. ‘After all, that’s how we got there in the first place.’

‘I never know what will happen with my drawings,’ said Bert. ‘They seem to take on a life of their own, especially when you and Mary are around.’

‘But surely it’s worth a try. After all, I don’t think putting them on the boat train would help, because they’d arrive in the present and there’s no guarantee that they would get back to the right Chalet School,’ said Rosalie.

So they went outside and Bert drew the picture of the Tiernsee, just as he had before. Mary Beth and Lucinda looked on nervously.

‘Why don’t you and Bert go with them?’ suggested Mary, who sensed the growing attraction between her two friends.

‘Yes, do!’ agreed Michael and Jane. ‘Then you can tell us all about it when you get back.’

So Bert, Rosalie and the girls stepped into the picture and found themselves on the banks of the Tiernsee. But were they in the right era?

Rosalie guided them to the Chalet School, but to their surprise, they were greeted by a very young Joey Bettany, who had recently been appointed head girl. It was in fact only 2 terms after Rosalie herself had left school.

Fortunately, Joey did not seem to recognise the older Rosalie when introduced (without her surname). She simply replied that they’d had a girl by that name as second prefect a short time before. Rosalie did not enlighten her, as she felt it might make things too complicated.

‘Perhaps you’d like to see our school,’ she said. ‘We’ve just built a new house, where my friends and I are in charge. Well, Miss Wilson is there, but we take most of the day to day responsibility.’

‘Why would the secretary be in charge of one of the houses?’ asked Mary Beth, somewhat puzzled.

‘The secretary? We don’t have one - because we’re a small school I guess - and I could never imagine Bill as a secretary. She teaches science,’ said Joey, equally puzzled.

‘We’d love to see round your school, Joey,’ said Bert, hastily, trying to rescue the situation. ‘Mary Beth and Lucinda go to a similar school, but an American one.’

‘Oh, I knew you were Americans from your accents,’ said Joey. ‘We have Evadne Lannis and Cornelia Flower, who are American. I don’t suppose you know them.’

‘I know a Cornelia Flower, but I don’t see how it could be the same one,’ said Lucinda.

Shelving the mystery for the present, they had an enjoyable tour of the school, although Mary Beth and Lucinda shuddered at the explanation of cold baths and were glad that their school was more forward-thinking.

When they got a moment to themselves, the friends discussed their dilemma. ‘We can’t stay here,’ said Mary Beth. ‘We don’t fit in and the syllabus is totally different. But how can we get back to ‘our’ Chalet School? This seems to be the right location but the wrong time.’

‘I miss all my friends. And I certainly don’t want to have cold baths every morning!’ said Lucinda, who had met Cornelia, only to discover that she was nothing like her quiet, unassuming friend.

Rosalie and Bert felt sorry for the two girls. ‘How on earth can we solve this one?’ said Rosalie. ‘I have no idea how to get them to the right time. Your drawings seem to work randomly.’

‘It ain’t my fault,’ said Bert. ‘I never expected to be a time traveller. All I know is that when you and Mary are around, my drawings take on a life of their own.’

At that moment, they heard a strange sound. And an old-fashioned police box appeared.

‘Well I never,’ said Bert. ‘What have we here?’

Out of the police box stepped, not as you might expect a policeman, but a man with long blond hair and a colourful scarf wrapped round his neck. ‘Where is this?’ he asked, looking round with interest.

‘The Tiernsee in Austria,’ answered Rosalie. ‘And who might you be?’

‘The Doctor, of course,’ replied that worthy gentleman.

‘Doctor Who?’ asked Bert.

‘Just the Doctor will do fine,’ he answered. ‘I heard there was a problem with the time/space continuum, and I think I may be able to help.’

Rosalie and Bert quickly explained the problem to him. ‘So we’re in the right place, but the wrong time,’ summarised Rosalie. ‘The girls can’t stay here, but we have no idea how to get them back to their own time.’

‘It seems your drawings have a fault in them, since they deliver people to the wrong time or place,’ said the Doctor.

‘They’re wonderful drawings,’ Rosalie defended Bert. ‘I think they’ve just been stretched way beyond their normal use. So can you help us?’

‘No problem, I’ll take all of you back to the right time in the Tardis, and then I can return you two to your own time afterwards, if you like,’ said the Doctor confidently.

‘That would be wonderful,’ said Rosalie.

So the four intrepid travellers entered the Tardis with the Doctor and they set off. In no time at all, the Tardis landed once more on the banks of the Tiernsee.

Happily, they discovered that they were in the right time frame. Mary Beth and Lucinda were welcomed home by their friends and a very relieved staff. They were asked many questions, but, not surprisingly, found it difficult to explain exactly where they had been and how they had got back. Madge and Miss Wilson learnt enough, though, to realise that perhaps they should look for another London agency through which to channel their exchanges, as they could not risk such a thing happening again.

Meanwhile, the Doctor, Rosalie and Bert slipped away unnoticed in the Tardis and set sail for London and their own time.

Here is the next bit. Thanks for all your encouragement and positive feedback.

~+~

Or so they thought. However, since in at least one of Rosalie’s universes, it was now Sunday afternoon, the powers that control these things decided to return her and Bert to Armiford, to save her the trouble of taking the train. So that is where the Tardis landed, right in the middle of the hockey pitch. Fortunately, no one was playing at the time, it being Sunday afternoon.

The Doctor looked around with interest. ‘This isn’t London,’ he said, rather stating the obvious.

‘No, it’s Armiford; we’re in the grounds of the school where I’ve been secretary for more years than I care to remember,’ explained Rosalie.

Just then, a group of senior girls appeared, intent on making the most of the good weather. When they saw the Tardis, they came to an abrupt halt.

‘What on earth?’ said Cornelia.

‘Not from earth, actually,’ said the Doctor. ‘I’m from Gallifrey.’

Cornelia took this as a joke, thinking it to be an island somewhere off the Scottish coast. ‘How did the police box get here?’ she asked.

‘Too hard to explain and I really must go,’ said the Doctor, disappearing rapidly into the Tardis, which soon disappeared in its usual fashion.

‘I can’t even try to explain how we got here,’ said Rosalie firmly, ‘so don’t ask.’

Being well-brought up Chalet School girls, the prefects obeyed her, although in truth they were secretly dying of curiosity.

‘Let me introduce Bert to you,’ said Rosalie by way of diversion. ‘He’s a friend of mine from London.’

‘Very nice to meet you young ladies,’ said Bert, raising his flat cap, without which he never went anywhere and prescribing a low bow, which made the girls laugh.

‘Pleased to meet you, too,’ chorused the girls. ‘It’s nice to know that Miss Dene is making friends in London,’ added Polly Heriot. ‘It would be a shame if she had to work all the time and didn’t see much of the city.’

‘Oh, yes,’ said Bert with a laugh. ‘We’ve had quite a few adventures together.’

‘Let’s go inside,’ said Rosalie. ‘I can show you round the school and you can meet some of the staff. I’ll drop you back at the station later.’

Bert was an instant hit in the staff room with his rugged good looks and Cockney sense of humour.

‘So you’re a street artist?’ said Con Stewart with interest. ‘That must be a lot of fun, though frustrating when it all gets washed away in the rain.’

‘Yes, it can be,’ replied Bert. ‘But I like to make every picture slightly different, so from that point of view it doesn’t matter so much. They aren’t exactly masterpieces,’ he added with a laugh.

‘But they are very good,’ declared Rosalie. ‘Couldn’t you draw one on the drive as an example?’

‘Yes, please,’ chorused the staff.

Bert agreed and produced a scene that he had never drawn before. When Con and Nell Wilson moved too close to the picture to have a better look, they found themselves drawn into it with Rosalie and Bert.

I have to echo what someone else said about not knowing who is going to turn up in their drabbles! Here is the next instalment.

~+~

They found themselves once more in London. But it was not the London of Bert and Rosalie's day, but a much more modern era. Why had they been brought here?

They were astonished and somewhat taken aback by the speed of life. The cars whizzed along at an alarming rate, with scant regard for fellow drivers or pedestrians. The few pedestrians hurried about their business, scarcely acknowledging each other's existence. The only thing that was familiar was the rain, for it was pouring down and the quartet were soon forced to take shelter in a nearby cafe, where they found all types of coffee on order, such as cappuccino, latte, espresso, from many South American countries, but not Austria.

In the end, Nell and Con settled for cappuccinos and Bert and Rosalie had espressos, which seemed to be closest to what they were used to. There were a number of cream cakes on display, but they decided to resist the temptation.

Whilst they were in the cafe, a group of young men came in and started hassling the owner. They demanded cigarettes, but then refused to pay for them. When the owner protested, they started to push him around and soon he fell to the ground, where several of the gang started to kick him, as he lay helpless.

Much to the quartet's surprise, the other customers in the cafe seemed oblivious to what was going on, apparently not wanting to get involved. Bert, however, had no such inhibitions. He sprang to his feet and yelled at the youths: 'Leave that poor man alone. He's done you no harm.'

The gang turned on Bert with their fists. Being outnumbered four to one, he was no match for them, and Rosalie was relieved when they ran off, as police sirens were heard in the distance. Someone, at least, had had the sense to dial 999.

Soon, two uniformed policemen entered the cafe. 'PC Stamp and PC Hollis, from Sun Hill,' one of them introduced himself. 'What's been going on here then?'

.Rosalie quickly explained. 'Bert was so brave,' she said proudly. 'Everyone else was ignoring what was happening, but he leapt right in.'

'That's not always the wisest course, sir, especially with odds of 4 to 1,' said PC Stamp. 'How are you feeling, sir?' he asked the cafe owner. 'I think we'd better get you to hospital to have you checked over.'

'Can we have your names and addresses, as witnesses, please,' PC Hollis said to the quartet.

'We don't actually have an address here,' explained Rosalie, 'We only just arrived in London. Perhaps we should come to the station later?'

'That would be fine, Miss,' answered Reg.

The cafe proprietor was whisked off to St Hughes by ambulance and the quartet decided they had better find a hotel at least for one night, as it looked as if they would need it.

For those who may have forgotten, Reg and Tony featured in my first drabble, The New Gardening Master :D

Thanks for your encouragement. Here is the next bit.

~+~

The quartet found a quiet but comfortable hotel, where they booked rooms for the night. Then they headed towards Sun Hill police station.

'It's all very futuristic,' said Miss Wilson, impressed. 'Not like the old police house in Howells with just PC Jones on duty. Of course, they have a proper station in Armiford with CID and everything, but it's nothing like this.'

'Well this is London and the 21st century,' said Bert.

'What do you mean, 21st century? I thought this was 1940s Britain, said Con with some amazement.

'Er, I think I should explain that in Bert's drawings, you're quite likely to travel through time as well as space,' said Rosalie. 'I don't know how it works, but we've always managed to get back to where we're supposed to be. Eventually.'

'What fun!' said Bill. 'I've travelled a lot in Europe, but not through time. This is a new experience for me.'

Con didn't seem quite so sure, for some reason, but she realised that there was nothing she could do about it, so she had to go along with the rest.

They entered the police station and asked for PC Stamp or PC Hollis. 'Just wait there, please,' said the friendly man on the desk, who, they noticed, was in a wheelchair. 'I'll call them.'

'Good morning, ladies and gentleman,' said Tony. 'Thank you for coming so quickly, I don't think we will need to keep you long. We already have two suspects in custody. Perhaps you could help us with an identity parade.'

'Of course,' said Bert. 'I remember the one who hit me very well.'

True to his word, Bert was easily able to pick out the two villains from the line-up. 'How is Mr Patel, the cafe owner?' he asked Tony afterwards.

'He's doing well, but he was very shaken by the attack. He was very grateful for your help.' replied Tony.

'I just did what anyone else would do,' said Bert. 'Though none of the other customers seemed to want to get involved. Will you need me as a witness?'

'I hope not,' answered Tony. 'With all the evidence against them, they should plead guilty. But it would be better for you to stay around here for a few days, just in case. I gather you're not local, although you sound like a cockney.'

'We're from Armishire.' explained Rosalie. 'Bert is a friend who's been travelling with us,' she added, sensing that Bert was none too sure how to answer Tony's question.

The quartet were advised to call at the station again in two days’ time to see whether there were any developments, so they booked a couple more nights in the hotel were they were staying.

Since they had to be in London for a few days, Bert invited them to tea with his Uncle Albert. Uncle Albert was a real character with a great sense of humour, who loved to laugh, especially at his own jokes.

As soon as they entered and were introduced, he started joking with his nephew, Bert. As their laughter grew louder and louder, their chairs suddenly left the floor and started to float towards the ceiling.

‘What the…’ spluttered Bill. Then Uncle Albert told a particularly funny story about his days in the Navy and Bill, Con and Mary could not help but join in the laughter. Sure enough, they too, immediately started to float toward the ceiling.

There they found themselves seated round a table laden with food and drink. Uncle Albert proceeded to pour out tea and pass round the cakes as if they were on terra firma. ‘This is much more fun than eating on the ground,’ he said with a laugh. He and Bert kept the others entertained with stories from Bert’s childhood. Bill and Con added a few anecdotes of their own about the mischievous middles they had known over the years.

Suddenly, Mary looked at the time. ‘I really think we ought to go,’ she said. It will be getting dark soon, and it’s a long way back to the hotel.’

At her words, the party suddenly found themselves floating down to the ground again.

‘Thank you for a lovely tea party,’ said Bill. ‘It’s been such fun!’

Thanks for all your lovely comments. Here is a bit more.

A couple of days later, they called back at Sun Hill station, where Tony and Reg were able to reassure them that they would not be required to appear as witnesses. The two men in custody had wisely decided to plead guilty in view of the overwhelming evidence against them.

'That's a relief,' said Bert. 'Now, it's time to go home.'

'But how will we get there?' asked Bill with interest. 'We're in the wrong century!'

' I don't suppose the Doctor is still around,' said Con, hopefully. 'I rather liked the look of him.'

Unfortunately, neither the Tardis nor the Doctor were to be seen in that part of London at that particular time. Instead they decided to take the tube to Paddington, where they could catch a train to Armiford. What they did not realise was that the tube train was travelling through time as well as space, so that by the time they reached Paddington, it was once more the 1940s.

Rosalie, Bill and Con were able to return safely to the Chalet School, where they regaled their colleagues with stories of their adventures.

'I've known you a long time, Nell,' laughed Hilda Annersley. 'But I never realised what a vivid imagination you have. You could almost rival Joey as a writer.'

Joey, who happened to be present in the Staff Room, was not impressed by Hilda's comments. However, she did store away some of the trio's less unusual adventures away for possible future use.

'I told you no-one would believe us,' said Rosalie to the other two later. 'Why do you think I've said so little about my time in London before now?'

'Especially not mentioning Bert,' teased Con. 'I know he likes you and I think you like him too.'

Rosalie said nothing, but the blush that spread over her face gave Con all the answer she needed.

'Don't worry,' said Nell, hastily. 'Your secret is safe with us.'

'At least for the moment,' said Con with a wicked grin.

Here is the next instalment. Sorry for the delay, but I've been extremely busy and also had problems with my laptop.

Thanks for your encouraging comments.

I have added a poll to see what you think. Not to influence you, but I have an idea how Rosalie and Bert could be together at CS!

~+~

The next two weeks until Rosalie returned to London passed very quickly. Joey was not seen much in the school, as she was expecting to be very busy soon. Jack was keeping her on bed rest, because of the concern that she might be expecting triplets again. Rosalie went to see her and Joey was soon laughing out loud at her adventures in London.

'Bert sounds like a really nice man,' observed Joey, casually.

'He is, I like him a lot,' confessed Rosalie. 'But I'm not sure how he feels about me. And anyway, how could I abandon the school, when I was given this time off specially so that I wouldn't have to leave?'

'I wouldn't worry too much, if I were you,' said Joey. 'These things have a way of working themselves out, given time. But I do think you should try and find out how Bert feels. In the meantime, you needn't worry. I won't tell anyone what you've told me.'

'Nell and Con already guessed,' said Rosalie. 'But they've promised to say nothing for now. I certainly don't want the school buzzing with rumours about the 'real' reason for my trips to London.'

Soon, it was time for Rosalie to return to London, where she found the household in something of a turmoil. Mr Banks was going on a business trip for 3 months.

'The children will be fine here, with Mary and the other servants,' he explained to Rosalie. 'And Winifred is always busy with her social work in the East End, so no one will miss me,' he said a little wistfully.

Rosalie privately thought that it was very sad, coming as she did from a close-knit clergy family. However, she did not feel it was her place to say so. Mary, however, was much more forthright in her views.

'The problem with this family is that you need to do more things together, not spend even more time apart. You and your wife hardly see the children as it is and you're missing out on the most important time of their lives, whilst they are growing up, something that you can never recover.'

'How dare you speak to your employer like that!' spluttered Mr Banks, who felt even more indignant because in his heart, he knew that Mary was right. 'You have no understanding of business matters. I work very hard to keep this family fed and clothed.'

'No one is disputing that,' said Mary more gently. 'But sometimes, it's a question of priorities. You have Jane, who wants to get to know her father and needs the influence of a man, in a virtually all-female household. Michael admires you from afar and longs to please you, but the only time you take notice of them both is when they are naughty or they do something that causes you inconvenience. Why don't you come to nursery tea one day?'

'Perhaps I will,' said Mr Banks, who was more affected by Mary's words than he cared to admit.

The question uppermost in Rosalie's mind, however, was whether this 3 month trip would mean an end to her own job in the household.

The next time she was in London, Rosalie worked steadily, as usual, although she sensed that her employer wanted to say something to her. Eventually in mid afternoon, Mr Banks spoke diffidently. 'I've been thinking a lot about what Mary said,' he confessed, 'and I really would like to go to nursery tea with the children, but I don't want to go on my own. Would you come with me? I know you like the children and they like you.'

'I'd love to,' said Rosalie eagerly, omitting to tell him that she often joined Mary and the children for nursery tea when Mr Banks was in one of his Friday afternoon meetings.

At 4pm promptly, Mr Banks and Rosalie arrived at the nursery door, to be greeted by a smiling Mary. 'I'm so glad you decided to come,' she said. 'We're toasting bread over the nursery fire today as a special treat.'

Soon, Mr Banks and Rosalie were seated in front of the roaring fire, watching as Michael and Jane put pieces of bread on long toasting forks and held them over the fire until they turned brown. They laughed as Michael gingerly pushed the toast on to a plate with his fingers, saying 'Ouch!'

'You're supposed to use that little lever on the side,' said Rosalie. 'That way, the toast gets pushed off the fork automatically and you don't burn your fingers.'

'Why don't you have a go, Father,' said Jane, offering him her toasting fork. Secretly, she was thrilled to see her father in the nursery, as it was the first time he'd ever paid them a visit.

Mr Banks soon proved himself to be an expert toaster, producing golden brown slices at an alarming rate. 'We used to do this when I was a boy,' he explained. 'I'd forgotten how much fun it was.'

After eating their toast with lashings of butter and strawberry jam, all washed down with good, strong tea for the adults and glasses milk for the children, it was time for a game.

'Let's do animal impressions,' said Michael, for whom this was a favourite game.

And so they did. The first round went smoothly enough, with Mr Banks producing a surprisingly authentic imitation of a pig. When his turn came round again, Rosalie, who was charged with allocating an animal to each person, said 'lion', rather to her own amazement.

She was even more amazed when Mr Banks promptly got down on all fours and proceeded to chase Michael and Jane around the room, roaring like a lion. The trio were soon breathless with laughter and collapsed in a heap.

'Time for bed, children,' said Mary. 'That's enough excitement for one day.'

'I think it's time we went, in any case,' said Rosalie. 'Thank you for inviting us, that was such fun.'

'Yes, indeed,' said Mr Banks, who had just about recovered his breath. 'I haven't had so much fun in a very long time. I hope you will let me come again.'

'You're welcome any time,' said Mary with a smile.

'Yes, please do come again, soon, Father,' chorused Michael and Jane.

Thanks for all your feedback and your votes in the poll. Here is the next bit. I couldn't resist the temptation to use a CBB cliche, hope I got it right!

~+~

After that, Mr Banks became more and more involved with his family and he encouraged Winifred to do the same. Winifred was very nervous at first, because she had never had much to do with the children until then. But after they went kite-flying in the park as a family a couple of times, she began to realise how much she was missing out on by not being involved with the children.

Mr Banks rearranged his business trip, so that he wouldn't be away for more than 3 weeks at a time, so Rosalie's job was safe, for the time being at least.

Of course, things didn't change totally overnight, but Mary confessed to Rosalie three weeks after Mr Banks' first visit to the nursery, that she was beginning to think that her work in the house was done.

'We're really trouble-shooter nannies,' she explained. 'We come in to help families discover each other and once our job is done, we move on,'

'I will miss you,' said Rosalie. ' We've had so much fun together.'

'I'll miss you too,' said Mary. 'But not as much as Bert will.'

Rosalie blushed. 'Do you really think he likes me?' she asked Mary, suddenly shy and uncertain of herself. 'I think I've fallen in love with him, but he's never said anything about his feelings for me.

Oh, you two are terrible!' said Mary with a laugh. 'Anyone can see that you're made for each other. But neither of you will do anything about it.'

They had to end their conversation there, but Mary had certainly given Rosalie plenty to think about. Did Bert really care for her? Would they get married eventually? Where would they live, in Armiford or London? What about her job at the school?

This impasse might have carried on indefinitely, had not fate taken a hand. The next day, Rosalie, Mary and the children were out for a walk. As they walked along the pavement beside a busy road, an army lorry swerved to avoid a child who had run out in front of him. The road was slippery, and so the lorry could not stop immediately, but mounted the pavement near the group. Rosalie was walking on the outside, and there was no way she could get out of the way in time. She just had time to push Jane, who was walking next to her, out of the path of the lorry.

Rosalie fell to the ground, grey, still and to all appearances dead.

Edited once for clarity.

Mary dropped to her knees at Rosalie's side. 'She's breathing OK,' she said with some relief. Call an ambulance someone.'

'Already done, Ma'am,' said the passenger from the army lorry. 'I did it on our radio, so they should be here very soon. I feel awful about the accident, though. Bill is generally such a careful driver.'

'It was last night's rain that made the road slippery,' said Mary. 'And you had to swerve to avoid that little boy. We all saw him run out into the road. But we didn't have time to get out of your way. If Rosalie hadn't pushed Jane out of the way...' She shuddered at the memory.

Passers-by were comforting the children, who fortunately, had not heard Mary's words and did not fully appreciate the danger they had been in. They were worried about Rosalie, though, as she lay unconscious on the pavement.

At that moment, the sound of a siren was heard in the distance and an ambulance appeared with its blue lights flashing. The two men who jumped out were very efficient and soon summed up the situation. It seems that only Miss Dene is injured. We'll take her to St Hughes hospital, as that's the nearest. You'd better follow by car,' he added to Mary, since they obviously couldn't take both her and the children in the ambulance.'

'But I don't have a car,' said Mary.

At that moment, a police car drew up and two familiar figures jumped out. 'You must be Miss Poppins,' said Tony Stamp. 'Miss Dene told us all about you, but I didn't expect to meet you so soon. What happened here?'

The situation was quickly explained to them and they took statements from the lorry driver and his mate. 'As soon as our back-up arrives, we will run you to the hospital,' said Reg. 'We can't have you catching a bus with the children.'

'Thank you,' said Mary gratefully.

The two kind policemen dropped Mary and the children off at St Hugh's. 'I do hope Miss Dene is all right,' said Tony. She seemed like a very nice lady.'

'She is,' said Mary. She and the children hurried inside to enquire at Reception about their friend. They were directed to a waiting area where someone would come to tell them as soon as there was any news.

'I wish Bert was here,' said Jane. 'He really cares for Rosalie and he ought to know what's happened. But I don't know how to contact him.'

Fortunately, Tony and Reg had seen Bert on their way back to Sun Hill station. He was entertaining some tourists with his pavement drawings, but as soon as he heard the news, he abandoned his elaborate drawing of a Parisian night scene and headed for the hospital.

'How is she?' said Bert breathlessly, having run most of the way to the hospital.

'We're still waiting for news,' answered Mary.

'I haven't said anything to her, but I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to her. Do you think she has any feelings for me?' he asked, suddenly uncertain of himself.

'I think that's a conversation you need to have with her,' answered Mary gently.

At that moment, a doctor appeared. 'Miss Dene seems to have been very lucky,' he said. 'She's suffered some cuts and bruises, but she has no serious injuries. She needs to stay in hospital for a few days' observation, but after that she should be fine.'

'That's good news,' said Bert. 'When can we see her?'

'As soon as you like, especially if you're Bert. She's been asking for you,' replied the doctor with a smile.

Thanks for your encouraging response and to those who took part in the poll. At least I know quite a few people are reading this and taking an interst in the outcome. Not many more posts to go, now, but here is the next bit.

Bert hurried into the room where Rosalie was being kept under observation, prior to being transferred to a ward/ She was sitting up in bed, looking a little pale, but very much alive.

'Oh, Rosalie,' said Bert. 'I was so worried. I thought I'd lost you when I'd only just found you. I never felt like this about anyone before, but I think I love you.'

'I love you too, Bert,' said Rosalie with a gentle smile. 'I've known how I've felt about you for some time, but I wasn't sure how you felt about me.'

'Well, I lost my parents at a young age, and I guess I've got used to hiding my true feelings,' said Bert.

'How sad,' said Rosalie, her eyes shining with sympathy.

'Oh, don't feel too sorry for me,' said Bert. 'My aunt and uncle brought me up and they treated me well, as they couldn't have kids of their own, but it's not the same.'

They spent some time discussing their possible future, without reaching any real conclusions. Rosalie's life had been the school until then and Bert's life was in London. He'd be willing to move to be near the school. But how would he support himself and his new wife. He didn't believe in these new-fangled ideas about married women being independent and earning their own living.

Besides, they wanted to start a family soon.

At this point, Mary stuck her head round the door. She saw at a glance that the two lovers had finally declared themselves. 'May we come in?' she asked with a smile. 'Michael and Jane want to see for themselves that you really are all right, Rosalie. They care for you a great deal, you know.'

'Of course,' said Rosalie. 'Bert and I have some news too. We're engaged.'

'Congratulations!'said Mary. 'I'm very happy for you both.'

'Does that mean I can be a bridesmaid?' broke in Jane excitedly. 'I always wanted to be a bridesmaid.'

'I think we can arrange that,' said Rosalie with a smile.'But we have lots to sort out before we can get married.'

'I wouldn't worry too much about that,' said Mary. 'These things have a way of working themselves out.'

'That's exactly what my friend Jo said,' replied Rosalie. 'I hope you're both right.'

Rosalie had to stay in hospital for a couple more days. When she was discharged, she and Bert travelled to the school to announce their engagement and to discuss their future.

Thanks for the update.

Thanks for all your positive feedback. Here is the last instalment. Hope you're not disappointed!

Sorry it's taken me so long to add the ending, but RL has been rather hectic this last week.

~+~

Bert and Rosalie received a warm welcome and many congratulations on their return to the Chalet School. ‘Though I don’t thank you for sweeping my most efficient secretary off her feet,’ said Miss Annersley with a twinkle in her eye. ‘When do you plan to be married?’

‘At the end of term, so that all the girls can attend if they wish,’ said Rosalie. ‘I’m sorry, I know it doesn’t leave you much time to find a replacement.’

‘Do you plan to settle here or in London?’ was the next question.

‘We’d like to settle near here, but obviously, Bert would need to find a job. I couldn’t carry on as school secretary indefinitely and in any case he would want to support me, not the other way round.’

‘Nell, I and the authorities at the San have been discussing this and we have a suggestion,’ said Miss Annersley. ‘Since we left Austria, we haven’t found a permanent art master, as you know. Bert has obvious artistic talent, although he has no formal qualifications. How would you feel about taking on the job?’ she asked Bert, who had been sitting quietly listening up until that point.

‘Yes, I’d love to. Thank you,’ said Bert. ‘Can I make another suggestion? There are lots of children at the San. I’d like to work with them, too, if I can. They must get so bored lying in bed all day. It would give them something interesting to do.’

‘You can and you may make a suggestion,’ said Hilda with a laugh. ‘I’ll have to discuss it with the Sanatorium staff, but it sounds like an excellent plan to me. There is just one other condition,’ she added. ‘Please ensure that none of your future drawings have magical properties. We don’t want our pupils going off on adventures.’

‘I think I can guarantee that, now that I’ve found Rosalie,’ said Bert with a smile.

And so things worked out very well for Rosalie and Bert. They married at the end of term, amidst much celebration and laughter. Uncle Albert turned up and tried to persuade some of the staff to join him on the ceiling for a tea party. The select few who accepted the invitation had a riotous time.

At the end of the garden, Bert and Rosalie saw some horses and went for a closer look. It was their friends from earlier in this story, who had come to wish them well. ‘Ve are fery happy in our new life and ve hope you vill be too,’ said Bree, whilst his wife proudly showed off their foal, who had been born in the spring. ‘Ve named her Mary,’ she confided shyly.

Bert proved to be a big hit both with the girls and with the children at the San, for he was a natural and enthusiastic teacher.

Initially, Rosalie reduced her hours at the school and Miss Renshaw took on more hours, which suited them both.

Joey duly had her second set of triplets, three boys, whom she named Stephen, Charles and Michael. ‘I really think we should stop there,’ she said to Jack, after several weeks of broken nights between the 6 little ones. However, whether she will stick to that resolution remains to be seen.

After a few months, Rosalie was forced to give up her work at the school, as she announced that she would soon be busy with other things. And exactly one year to the day after their wedding, she presented Bert with quintuplets to much rejoicing, except possibly on the part of Joey. Three girls and two boys, whom she insisted on calling George, Winifred, Michael, Jane and (of course) Mary.
