Post subject:  My name is.......

Len Maynard walked into the Middles Common Room on the first day of term to be greeted by a voice shouting rather loudly.
“I tell you, you spell my name with an S! S for Sugar!”
“I thought you said it was Cheryl?” asked Ros Lilley. “I wish you’d make up your mind. And the staff won’t call you sugar, you know. They never use nicknames, and I’ve never come across anyone else called Sugar before.”
Len eased her way into the group, and saw a new girl, very slim with shoulder length fair hair.
“Hello,” she said. “I’m Len Maynard. I think you must be the new girl, Sheryl? Miss Annersley has asked me to do sheepdog for you.”
“She’s just said her names Sugar,” said Con. “We thought it was Cheryl, but it isn’t. Maybe you’ve got it wrong too Len.”
The new girl looked as though she was about to scream with frustration, but she bit her lip and said nothing.
“Stop being silly, Con. Miss Annersley gave me her name herself, so of course it’s right,” replied Len in swift French, assuming that the new girl, as usual, knew nothing of any language but her own. Unfortunately for Len, the train had been delayed leaving Paris, and hearing nothing but French all around her for thirty minutes longer than usual had allowed Sugar to become as fluent as the Maynard triplets themselves.
“Thank you Len,” Sugar said in the same language. “I don’t mind being called Sugar, as I don’t really like my name. I suppose the mistresses will insist on using it though.”
Len stared at her for a moment. “You speak French like the French!” she said in amazement. Have you lived in France?”
“No, but we changed trains in Paris. You soon pick things up when you hear nothing but French all around you, you know.”
At that moment the bell for Abendessen rang somewhere in the depths of the building, and silence fell with a resounding thud. the girls hurried to line up at the door, and Sugar, who had had the foresight to check the list on the wall, slid into the right place in the long line. They marched in deathly silence to the Speisesaal, the only sound to be heard being the beat of marching feet that set the whole building swaying in rhythm.
Miss Annersley said the brief Latin Grace, and the girls moved sideways, pulled out their chairs and sat as if they were one person. All but one. As Sugar sat down with the rest there was a resounding crash, made louder by the wonderful acoustics in the Speisesaal, and her chair fell apart so suddenly that she landed on floor, totally winded. One leg of the chair spun away down the long room to end up at the feet of Miss Annersley, who had stood up at the horrible sound to see what had happened. Red in the face, Sugar struggled to her feet, and stood wondering what she was supposed to do without a chair to sit on. However, the well-oiled machinery of the Chalet School swung into action, and a chair appeared as if my magic. The ruined remains of the original being spirited away at the same time.
“Are you all right, child?” asked a voice at her elbow, and Sugar looked round to see a figure dressed in a starched blue uniform - Matron!
“Yes thank you,” she stammered. “I just lost my breath for a moment.”
“Very well. But if you have any aches, come to me for some lubrication.”
Sugar sat down very gingerly, but this chair was made of sterner stuff, and stayed in one piece. Soon she was tucking into a typical Austrian meal, which surprised her more than a little, as she’d understood that they were actually in Switzerland.

:rofl::rofl: That was brilliant, Pat. I loved the bit about picking up French because she changed trains in France. I look forward to reading some more of this.

Congratulations on the French, Sugar. :D

That word "lubrication" is a bit worrisome. I know castor oil is excellent for engines, but am rather dubious when it comes to chair-crashing injuries....

Thank you, Pat.
