Post subject:  Murders in Tyrol, updated 29/05/2009

I began to post this on the old board but it was lost in the great hacking disaster. My aim this Autumn is to complete it! For those who remember reading it before can I ask you to not reveal who the victims are. If anyone wants to guess who the murderer is then do so by PM.
Enjoy!

"That's seven letters for you Joey", Jack Maynard announced as he finished sorting out the mailbag one winter morning.
"Let’s have a look at them,” Joey said reaching across the breakfast table to take her mail. “Hmm, letter from Simone, letter from Molly, something from my publishers, Junk, two bills, and what's this?" Joey raised her dark eyebrows as she looked at the elaborate envelope in front of her.
"What?" Jack asked looking up from his own letters, Joey waved her letter in front of his eyes. "Oh that! Yes I was wondering about that, Margot and I both have one."
Margot Maynard, twenty-three and beautiful but still on occasions a child of thirteen, snatched her letter and ripped it open eagerly.
"It's from Auntie Madge!" She exclaimed, "It says..."

"Jem and I have decided to come out to the Tiernsee for a few weeks, will you come and join us for a couple of days before the start of term? It would be lovely to see you. Please do come out for a visit." Hilda Annersley read the invitation out loud to her friend Nell Wilson.
"It's not like Madge to type letters is it?" Nell remarked, as she picked up her own identical invitation.
"No it isn't." Hilda agreed frowning slightly.
"Shall we go?" Nell asked, "It seems like another lifetime since I last saw winter in Tyrol, I would love to see it again." She added wistfully.
"So would I." Hilda sighed her eyes beginning to mist over.

In England three friends had received the same invitation. But the sender was a different person.
"It would be nice to have a few days in Tyrol with Auntie Joey and Uncle Jack." Mary-Lou Trelawney said looking up from the invite.
"But we are supposed to be there for three days time, it's a bit short notice." Nancy Wilmot put in.
"You and Kathy have to go back to Europe for school in a week, why don't you just go early? We can fly to Vienna and make our own way from there." Mary-Lou suggested before adding, "I haven't seen any of the Maynard's since Len married Reg, it would be such fun to see them all again."
Kathy looking up from playing with her toast settled the decision for her friends, "Lets go! It will give us something to do and it's not as if we have any other plans."

I didn't think this was in the Archives, if it is then I apologise from posting from the beginning again and not continuing with new bits.

"Aunt Jane are you sure you don't need anything?" Madge Russell asked. "An extra pillow for your back, or a drink, another book maybe?"
"I'm fine dear." The tiny old woman said with a smile, "I'm enjoying looking at the scenery, it's not often that I travel through half of Europe by train."
"I'm so glad that you didn't mind this upheaval. I love Tyrol so much that I simply couldn't refuse Joey's invite."
"It's understandable, I'm looking forward to seeing young Joey myself. It’s been many years since we last had the pleasure of meeting.”
Jem Russell came back from the smoking car at this point, "We get to Vienna at half past seven tomorrow morning, I think we should all try to get an early night to make sure there's no mad dash to get ready."

"The dear Tiernsee." Joey sighed as they drove into the valley. "Make sure you drive carefully Jack, the road looks icy."
Jack, driving Minnie, nodded grimly. It had been a difficult journey and he was only glad that Con and Roger had volunteered to stay at Freudsheim for a few extra days and keep an eye on the younger children. If he’d been required to drive a bunch of mischievous children he did not think he would have made it in one piece.
Len Entwhistle, looked at her husband of five months. Reg was staring glumly out of the window, he had not wanted to come on this trip but Len had insisted they should go. He was now surrounded by his wife's family and friends, people who thought she was wonderful. As they drove past the small station his eyes widened and he pressed his face to the window to ensure that what he saw was true.
"I didn't know they were coming." Len remarked sharply once they had driven past.
"Well none of us seem to know much about this apart from what was in the invitation." Hilda said wisely noticing the tension, which had suddenly erupted in Len.
"Who was it that you saw?" Joey asked distractedly as they reached the holiday chalet of the Maynard's, Bettany's and Russell's.
She did not give them time to answer her. Madge appeared in the doorway and Joey letting out a shriek leapt out of the car and threw herself upon her sister.
"Oh Madge, it is so lovely to see you! You look as young as ever!"
"Thank-you Joey," Madge replied warmly, "But really where have you been? I'd have thought you'd have been here to welcome us."
"What do you mean to welcome you?" Joey questioned, "We are your guests, you invited us out here."
"No I didn't. You invited me."
The two sisters stared at each other in disbelief, what was this mix up and how had it come about?

"What's going on out here?" Jem questioned appearing behind Madge in the doorway.
"Madge is trying to pull my leg." Joey said airily as she kissed Jem on the cheek. "She's denying that she invited us all out here, she's saying that I invited her but I didn't!"
Jem stared at his sister in law in disbelief before saying sharply "Oh yes you did Joey. We got the invite a few days ago and came out here almost at once."
"But I did not send it!" Joey protested. "Tell him Jack."
"It was Madge who invited us." Jack said quietly thinking that something funny was going on.
"Hulloooo!" A young voice full of song filtered up the path.
Joey turning round uttered a gasp, "Mary-Lou? But what are you doing here? And Kathy and Nancy too!"
"You invited us Auntie." Mary-Lou remarked seeing the anxiety, which had crept over Joey's face.
"I did?" Joey stammered in disbelief. What was going on? Was she going mad?
Nell and Hilda had been quietly observing the scene playing out before them. Neither of them knew what to make of the events, it all seemed so unreal and confusing. Nell looking up at the sky, shuddered as she saw a sight she knew only too well.
"I think we should unload the car now." She said shrilly. "It looks as if we could be getting a heavy snow storm in a minute."
Those used to Tyrol and its snowstorms turned to look at the sky, it was not a natural colour. Everyone hurried over to Minnie and began to unload the car. As the last of the suitcases were brought inside the first snow flakes began to fall.

Miss Marple had been sitting next to the fire in the drawing room whilst all this had occurred. It seemed that she had not been paying much attention to all the commotion. But this was not the case. She did not know what to make of the confusion, though she was sure that no good would come out of it.
“Aunt Jane!” Joey exclaimed as she saw Miss Marple, “But I didn’t know you were here, Madge never said. How are you?”
“Very well my dear, I did have a slight cold last week but that has cleared up now. The air up here is marvellous isn’t it?”
“Who is she?” Kathy murmured to Mary-Lou.
“I don’t know.” Mary-Lou shrugged looking completely bewildered.
Margot had over heard the short discussion and muttered, “She was in school with Mamma’s Mother, when we lived in England Mamma and Auntie Madge would visit her twice a year, I suppose Auntie still does.”
“Are these some of your children?” Miss Marple asked peering around at the cluster of people standing in the background. “Ah your husband is here I see, How are you Doctor Maynard?”
Jack replied that he was perfectly well while Joey gestured for Len and Margot to come forward.
“These are two of my triplets, Len and Margot, the middle one Con is at home with her husband-looking after the younger members of the family.” Joey lowered her voice before proudly saying, “She wanted the practice.”
Miss Marple smiled at them, “You were married over the summer weren’t you dearie?” She said to Len. “I hope you liked the tea set I sent you?”
Len muttered her thanks whilst thinking that the tea set was so foul that it had been stowed away in some cupboard never to see the light of day again.
“Joey,” Madge reappeared in the doorway looking extremely angry, “Will you stop your game of saying you didn’t organise this as the kitchen is stocked up with food and if you didn’t request it then who did?”
“I didn’t organise this Madge, all I knew is that I had an invite from you asking me out here.” Joey was beginning to get heated.
“Now why don’t we all just calm down.” Jack said laying a hand on Joey’s arm. “Jo why don’t you phone Irma and see if she knows anything about this.”
Joey nodded grimly and went over to the phone she picked it up and her eyes grew wide. “It’s dead. The line is dead.” She announced dramatically.
“The storm will have done that.” Nell remarked from where she was gazing out of the window.
The others turned to stare out of the window, the snow was falling violently and quickly. It seemed that they would be stuck inside the Chalet for a good few days to come.

Dinner was tense. Joey and Madge kept on shooting looks of loathing at the other; both were livid over the confusion of the invitations. Of all the guests it was only Miss Marple who was unaffected by the atmosphere, she alone ate her dinner quite placidly.
Jack knowing that an argument with her adored sister could upset Joey resolved that after dinner he would get to the bottom of this mystery. As Madge made moves to go upstairs after dinner Jack stopped her, saying in a loud forceful voice. “I think we should all go and try to sort the confusion of the invitations out. We’re going to be stuck here for a few days so it seems and I for one don’t want the next few days to be full of petty arguments.”
Everyone nodded and made their way towards the drawing room. Once there Jack, standing in front of the fire place, was unsure of what to say next.
“Um well it seems that we have all received invitations to be here from er either Madge or Joey. Though it seems that neither sent them.”
Everyone nodded, apart from Miss Marple who Jack failed to notice.
“Now who received an invitation from Madge, if you could just raise your hands.”
The hands of Joey, Margot, Len, Reg, Hilda and Nell rose into the air.
“So including myself that is seven. So am I correct in assuming that you remaining six received invites from Joey.”
They all nodded eagerly apart from Miss Marple who coughed.
“Yes?” Jack questioned trying to hide his embarrassment over the fact that he had forgotten she was there.
“I didn’t receive an invitation, dear Madge said I should come along when she received hers. She said that nobody would mind.” Miss Marple said this whilst doing her best fluffy old lady act.
“That doesn’t matter I’m sure.” Jack told her kindly. “Now as both Joey and Madge firmly deny sending the invitations I am beginning to believe that this is the work of a third party, someone who isn’t here.”
“But why would someone want to send us all here?” Joey said her eyes round and wide.
“I don’t know.” Jack admitted shaking his head.
“Maybe,” Miss Marple said pensively, “This mystery person is actually one of the party here.”
They all turned and stared at her wildly, all thinking that she had gone mad.
“Why would one of us send these invitations in Joey or Madge’s name?” Nancy remarked indignantly.
“For a joke maybe?” Miss Marple replied sweetly, “Or maybe for a more sinister reason.”
Everyone frowned at her, completely outraged at what she seemed to be suggesting.
“And what do you mean by that exactly?” Nell questioned in an icy tone.
Miss Marple just smiled maddeningly and shrugged her shoulders.
“I think Miss Marple is right.” Hilda said suddenly and silently, it was almost as if she did not wish to draw attention to her-self. “Though I don’t think anyone here sent the letters… I think there is someone else lurking in the background, in the shadows even.”
She looked nervously behind her and shivered.
“Aunt Hilda is everything alright?” Len asked worriedly she had thought that her Aunt had been under strain lately.
“Yes fine.” She replied in a cheery sort of voice. “In fact I’m rather tired. I think I’ll go to bed.”
Madge and Joey their argument forgotten about for the time being turned and stared at each other in horror, “The beds, they won’t be made up!” Both made the announcement.
“Never mind!” Mary-Lou told them springing forward, “We’ll all help to get it sorted, just tell us whose sleeping where and we’ll make up the beds.”
Joey turned to Madge and said, “Well if you and Jem, Len and Reg, and Jack and I have the double rooms.”
“Yes and then couldn’t Nancy and Kathy, and Mary-Lou and Margot share the two twins.”
“Leaving the three singles for Hilda, Nell and Aunt Jane. Is that fine with everyone?”
It was. It did not take long for the beds to be made up and within an hour all were sleeping peacefully. One never to wake again.

Breakfast was late the next morning. Everyone had been worn out from travelling such long distances the previous day and as no one else seemed to be getting up they all felt that they deserved a lie in.
Nell and Mary-Lou were the first to rise. They began to make tea and toast for the others who would undoubtedly follow. Nancy was the next to emerge.
“Kathy’s ill.” She remarked gruffly. “She’s going to stay in bed for the morning.”
“It’s nothing serious I hope?” Mary-Lou asked concern creeping into her voice, as Reg and Len emerged from upstairs.
“Oh no, she’s just worn out from yesterday I expect.”
The concerned tone did not leave Mary-Lou’s attractive young voice, “Kathy hasn’t been all that well lately though has she?” She said it more to herself than to anyone else.
Nancy glanced at Mary-Lou and thought to herself, “How much does she know?”
Nell buttering toast said, “Well if that’s the case then it may be an idea for Reg to go and take a quick look at her.” As she was concentrating on making enough food for everyone she failed to notice the looks of mingled dismay and annoyance which came across both Len and Nancy’s faces. Needless to say Mary-Lou did notice.
“Have a look at Kathy, did you say?” Reg questioned as he took a piece of toast.
“Yes if you don’t mind.” Mary-Lou said hesitantly, not altogether sure if this was a good idea or not.
“No not at all, I’ll take her some tea shall I?”
“The kettle’s just boiled.” Nell told him, and Reg quickly made Kathy a strong cup of tea, with just a dash of milk and no sugar. Nancy could not bear to watch. She felt masses of anger rising inside her. Why he even knew how she liked her tea. How was this so?
Margot entered the kitchen, passing Reg in the doorway, her red gold curls flowing over her shoulders.
“Good morning.” She said cheerfully. “Or should I say Good Afternoon!”
“It’s only half past ten!” Len snapped at her sister.
“I was joking.” Margot remarked dryly thinking that it was about time her sister lightened up a bit.

Reg gently tapped on the door of the room Kathy shared with Nancy.
“Come in.” A tired voice called.
The door was firmly shut before either of them spoke again.
“Oh darling, it’s so good to see you.” Kathy said attempting to sit up.
Reg supporting her in his arms and stroking her hair replied. “I think people are beginning to suspect.”
“Which?” Kathy questioned quickly.
“Both. I’m sure Len and Nancy know about us, they had such a hurt expression when I said I’d come and take a look at you.” Seeing Kathy’s confused look he elaborated, “Nancy said you were ill, I had to come and see you… and Mary-Lou looks as if she may be putting two and two together.”
“Poor Nancy.” Kathy sighed. “She is one of my dearest friends but that is all she ever will be to me. I told her that when she first confessed her feelings for me and I thought she understood but it appears that she did not”
“Why didn’t we realise how we felt for one another when we first met, before I had committed myself to Len?” Reg remarked angrily, he had asked this question to himself so many times over the past few months.
“I don’t know…. I suppose we were never thrown into each others company until recently.” Kathy said slowly thinking about how her and Reg’s relationship had started.
A week before the start of the autumn term Kathy had broken her ankle; consequently she had still been in the San when it emerged that one of the school’s pupils had brought scarlet fever to school with her. The whole school, including Len, had been forced to remain in quarantine which due to one thing and another had lasted for over a month. Kathy was soon to well to remain in the San. Realising this Len had asked Kathy if she wanted to stay at her home and keep Reg company. Thrown into each other’s way of life they began to realise just how well they got on, and just how attracted they were to each other. In just ten days they confessed their love for each other and embarked guiltily on their passionate affair. Both had agreed to wait until the end of the school year before running away together, that way they would have more money saved towards their new life.
Once Kathy had returned to school hasty meetings were arranged for as often as possible, Reg using Kathy’s ankle as an excuse to see her. But when, at the beginning of December, Kathy discovered she was pregnant the pair had decided that at the first opportunity they got they would leave the Platz together. All they were waiting for was the pay cheque, which Kathy would receive at the start of the next term. As soon as that was cashed they would disappear.
“What are you thinking of love?” Reg asked seeing a dreamy look in Kathy’s eyes.
“Us.” Kathy said smiling happily at him, Reg overcome by her beauty leant down to kiss her. Before their lips could touch though an ear piercing shriek erupted. A shriek which filled the whole house with a feeling of dread.

Jack Maynard rushed out into the corridor, he recognised that screech only too well. It came from a room two doors down from the one he shared with his wife. On entering it he discovered Joey standing, now mutely, her face unnaturally white.
“She’s dead Jack, dead.” She said shakily pointing at the motionless figure that lay in the bed.
“Let me see.” Jack said quickly rushing over to the body to see whether Joey was right. He took hold of an arm to try and see if there was a pulse. He did not even have to try and find one, the arm was cold and Jack knew that she must have been dead for hours.
“What’s going on?” Came Jem Russell’s voice from the doorway.
Joey looked wordlessly at Jack not knowing what to say. More people were coming to see what was going on. What had the screaming been about?
Silence hung in the air; it was like a cobweb had descended blocking out sound. There was a sudden movement and someone pushed their way into the room.
“Hilda?” A voice questioned.
“Oh Nell,” Joey said taking hold of her friend’s arm, “She’s dead, she’s gone.”
Nell Wilson slowly sank to the floor; her best friend had gone. The only person who was left from the old days, the only person who had known the truth of her life before she had joined the school’s teaching staff. Joey crouched down on the floor next to her. Placing her arms around the now emotionally crushed Nell Wilson she realised just how strong the friendship between Hilda and Nell had been.

“Here’s your tea Miss Marple.” Mary-Lou said sorrowfully.
“Oh thank-you dear.” Miss Marple said reaching out to take the cup offered to her.
“That’s fine.” Mary-Lou replied as she sank into a chair. “If I keep my-self busy then it helps with the pain of loosing Aunt Hilda.”
“I am so sorry.” Miss Marple paused, she felt that she was intruding at a time when everyone around her was engulfed in grief. “Do they know how she died yet?”
“They seem to think it was her heart, but…” Mary-Lou paused and frowned. “I never knew that Aunt Hilda had a bad heart.”
“That’s because, as far as I know, she didn’t.” A fresh voice came from the doorway and a grey faced Nell Wilson joined the two women, one so old and one so young.
“Do you think that Uncle Jem and Uncle Jack have got it wrong then?” Mary-Lou asked leaning forward in her chair.
“No.” Nell said slowly. “But Hilda did not simply have a heart attack, something caused her to have it.”
“Had she been under a lot of stress lately?” Miss Marple asked remembering the worried manner of Hilda Annersley from the night before.
Nell glancing around to make sure they were alone nodded. “Between the three of us, yes she had. Over the last few months she’d been receiving threatening letters. Oh she laughed at the first few but the more she got the less funny it seemed. I’m not sure that she even wanted to come here but I thought the break would do her good so I persuaded her to come. How I wish I hadn’t now.”
Miss Marple laid a sympathetic hand on Nell’s arm. “You can’t blame yourself, if she was as worried as you say then she may well have had the heart attack at home.”
“What did the letters say Auntie Nell?” Mary-Lou asked a determined look on her face, she meant to get to the bottom of this mystery.
“Oh the usual nonsense.” Nell sighed. “Watch your back I’m after you, maybe it would be for the best if you disappeared for a while… I told her to keep them and go to the police but after showing them to Joey and I she threw them onto the fire.”
“Disgusting things.” Miss Marple said suddenly a look of revulsion on her face.

“Joey Baba, try and sleep.” Madge Russell spoke to her sister as if it were still the days when she had been head of the school.
“I’m fine Madge honestly.” Jo replied just as irritably as she would have done if she were a naughty middle. “I need to go and comfort Nell, she needs my support.”
“You can go after you’ve had a nap Jo, Jack and the girls will be worried if you don’t rest.”
At these words Joey closed her eyes obediently but no matter how much she tried sleep would not come.
“Those letters,” She said sitting up suddenly.
“Joey please try and rest.” Madge told her sister.
“No Madge you don’t understand. I’ll try and sleep after I’ve told you this, I promise.”
“Very well.” Madge said slowly wondering what her sister was going to tell her.
“Hilda had been receiving anonymous letters and the font of them was the same as the invitations we received. Oh the style of the writing and the paper were completely different but the font was exactly the same.” Jo blurted this out very quickly.
“Are you sure?” Madge asked. “It’s probably just a coincidence surely. I mean Hilda had a heart attack, it’s not as if she were murdered.”
“But what if Jack and Jem were tricked into thinking she had a heart attack.” Jo said wildly. “It was only the other day that I was reading about a man who had injected people with a drug which brought on a lethal heart attack.”
“Are you saying then that someone here killed Hilda then?” Madge asked leaning forward.
“No but I mean we don’t know who invited us here-it could have been them! Don’t you agree?” Madge looking at her sister closed her eyes, really Joey had too vivid an imagination at times.
“No Joey I don’t agree, I think Hilda’s death has been a big shock for you.” She paused. “I’m going to get Jem to make you a sleeping tonic, you really do need to sleep you know!”

Jem Russell was watching the snow continue to fall heavily. He was troubled about Hilda’s death, more so than he was letting on. He had noticed that she had looked strained the previous evening but he had not bothered to question her over it.
“Something does not add up,” He said to himself.
“What does not add up?” His brother in law questioned as he overheard this comment.
Jem turned to Jack Maynard in relief, here was someone who he could talk it over with.
“Hilda’s death.” He stated. “I’ve never treated her for heart problems in all the time she’s been my patient. I don’t see how it was possible for her to suffer from an attack.”
Jack nodded, “I thought the same. She has always been so healthy, I’d have said she had at least another twenty years left.”
“She wasn’t looking herself last night, have you any idea why?”
“No.” Jack said shortly. “She hasn’t been looking her-self for a few months. It’s not that she had been looking ill, more like she had been looking scared, as if she were afraid of something.”
Jem’s face clouded at this, something definitely was not right.
“Tomorrow, we re-examine her body.” He said at last. “I have a feeling that there may be something we’ve missed.”

“It’s dreadful isn’t it Nancy?” Len Entwhistle questioned; she did not need to state what.
Nancy nodded, “The fact that it was so sudden,” she shuddered, “None of us got a chance to say good bye.”
“Yes,” Len agreed, she was silent for a moment before adding. “I wonder what will happen with the school now.”
Nancy looked at Len in surprise, “I don’t know… I hadn’t thought about it to be honest with you.”
“I suppose the trustee’s and Aunt Madge will decide who will be head. I can’t imagine Aunt Nell wanting it… you seem to be the most likely candidate in my opinion. After all you did fill in that one term.”
“I suppose so yes.” Nancy agreed, she had half wished for Hilda to retire ever since she had filled in for her. In some ways she craved the power being head had given her.
“Nancy if you do become head you will have my support.” Len said with a smile as she touched Nancy’s arm. “Aunt Hilda’s one failure was that she was unable to progress with the times. I’ve suggested various reforms for the school, which would bring it more up to date but each one she rejected. I mean you agree with me about the morning cold baths being a dated rule, don’t you?”
Nancy found herself nodding.
“We’ll work through this mess together Nancy, and bring the Chalet School into the future.”

Hmm, people with something to gain from Hilda's death. Although they don't really sound like they did it.

Joey sounds like she's on the right lines, even if Madge thinks she's being over imaginative. I wonder what Miss Marple's take on it all is.

Everyone went to bed early that night. All were tired out by a day of grieving. Yet it took some longer than others to get to sleep.
Reg could not sleep, he wished it was Kathy sleeping next to him not cold, ambitious Len. He longed for the day that he and Kathy could leave their past behind and concentrate on their future. All they needed was a couple more thousand pounds and they could go straight away, never to come back.
Margot was creeping out of the room she shared with Mary-Lou, being extra careful not to wake her. A creaky floorboard made her jump and she quickly glanced around to see who was there. She saw no one emerge out of the darkness and breathing quickly she made her way towards one of the bathrooms, where she remained until she had talked herself into believing that the noise had just been the house settling.
She was not the only one still awake.
“Jem,” Madge muttered.
He merely grunted and continued to snore. Madge poked him in the ribs.
“What?” He said sitting up in bed. “Has anything happened at the San?”
“Jem you are on holiday,” Madge said in an exasperated whisper, “There’s no San for you to worry about here.”
“Why did you wake me up then?” He questioned grumpily.
“I heard something.” Madge said. “There’s someone moving around.”
“You were probably dreaming,” Jem told her as he tried to snuggle down under the blankets.
“No I wasn’t.” Madge told him. “There’s someone skulking around, will you go and see who it is?”
Frowning, Jem got into his dressing gown, he knew he would not get a moment’s rest if he didn’t go and investigate. He saw nothing suspicious upstairs but knowing his wife wouldn’t be satisfied unless he did a thorough search he descended to the lower floor. It was dark downstairs, a bulb had gone in the hallway and nobody had bothered to replace it, consequently Jem failed to notice the person in the shadows until it was too late.
A startled “What are you doing?” were his last words before his world went dark.

Miss Marple was the first one up the next morning. Consequently it was she who found the body that was sprawled out in the entrance hall.
“Oh my!” She exclaimed as she surveyed the blood-covered hall. Careful not to disturb anything she made her way upstairs. She knocked on the door of Jack and Joey’s room. A minute or two later, after no reply she knocked again, this time harder. Eventually the door opened, to reveal Jack in his dressing gown.
“Yes,” He questioned, wondering what Miss Marple could want at this time in the morning.
“There’s something you should see.” She said trying to keep her voice low.
Jack raised his eyebrows and followed Miss Marple, “I’ll be back in a minute.” He told Joey trying not to worry her.
“What is it?” He asked Miss Marple, once they were out of Joey’s hearing.
“It’s downstairs Doctor, it’s horrible.”
Jack shuddered, he had a feeling that Miss Marple was referring to having discovered another body.
His eyes widened as he saw the body in the entrance hall, part of the skull had been crushed and blood and brains had run out of the head over the floorboards. Putting his hand to his mouth to try and prevent him from being sick he said hoarsely to Miss Marple.
“We can’t let the other’s see this. Go and tell everyone not to leave their rooms.”
“What about…?”
“I’ll see to them, don’t worry.”
Miss Marple nodded and began to climb the stairs.

It was with a grey face that Jack Maynard entered the room he and Joey shared.
“What is it?” Joey asked, as he entered the room, she was sitting up in bed and had been waiting for him to return.
“I have some bad news Joey.” Jack told her slowly. “I need you to be strong.”
“There’s been another death hasn’t there?” She questioned her black eyes wide and fearful.
Jack nodded and took hold of his wife’s hands, his own were ice cold and her warm skin gave him courage.
“Who is it?” Joey said hoarsely, praying that it was not one of her daughters.
“It’s Jem.” Jack told her, trying to keep the emotion out of his voice. His closest friend had just been brutally killed but he knew that he had to remain in control, someone had to support Joey and Madge.
Joey sank down into the pillows. Jem was the closest thing to a Father that she had ever known and the knowledge that he was dead was a big shock for her. Yet she knew that she would have to get a grip on her-self, she would have to tell her sister the news.
“I’ll tell Madge.” Joey said as she sat up and put an arm around a increasingly distaught Jack. He nodded, he had been hoping she would offer to do that.
Joey quickly got into her dressing gown and went to the room next to her own. Madge was still asleep, and Joey sitting on the bed gently woke her up.
“Morning,” Madge said sleepily. “Where’s Jem?”
“Madge,” Joey said slowly, “This is going to be a shock but Jem is dead.”
“Dead!” Madge exclaimed in disbelief, her tiredness vanishing. “How can he be dead? He’s perfectly healthy! Is this another leg pull Josephine.”
“No Madge, I only wish it was.” Joey said as tears began to fall out of her eyes. “Aunt Jane found him I think, I don’t know how or where.”
Madge was silent for a moment, the news beginning to sink in. “He went to investigate a noise in the night. Do you think someone killed him?” Her voice had become mournful and dull.
“I don’t know,” Joey said simply, “Jack is in a awful state, so I’m thinking that could possibly be the case.”
“But who would want to kill Jem?” Madge questioned her big brown eyes full of tears.
“You mean kill Jem and Hilda.”

The snow continued to fall during that chaotic morning, it had not stopped once since they had arrived, there was no way that any of them could attempt to go and get help from elsewhere.
Reg helped Jack remove Jem’s body from the entrance hall. It was placed in the empty box room where Hilda’s body also lay. The two remaining doctors’ then re-examined Hilda’s body so carefully and thoroughly that they discovered a pinprick and some slight bruising.
“She’s been injected with something lethal.” Jack told the younger doctor, who nodded in agreement. “It looks like we have a double murderer amongst us.”
Everyone, bar Madge who was being kept in bed, was summoned to the library.
“I am not accusing any of you here,” Jack spoke slowly aware that the mind of a murderer was a strange and complex thing. “But I want to warn you that there is no doubt about it, there is a murderer in this house.”
Everyone looked at each other in shock, who could it possibly be?
“We must keep on our guard.” Jack told them, “I know it sounds harsh but trust no-one.”
He walked out of the room abruptly and slowly the rest of the party began to disperse.
Mary-Lou was left alone with Miss Marple and Nell Wilson.
“What do you think the link is between Auntie Hilda and Uncle Jem?” She asked her face paler than usual.
“I have no idea.” Nell answered. “Jem and Hilda have only ever had a professional relationship.”
“We need to try and find out more about them.” Miss Marple said simply, looking at Mary-Lou. “I wonder,” She continued, “Would you mind looking through Miss Annersley’s room for me, we may be able to find a clue.” Turning to Nell she said, “Would you keep a look out to make sure nobody disturbs Mary-Lou or finds out what she’s doing.”
The two women nodded and set off upstairs.
Mary-Lou found nothing of any interest on the dressing table, or the bed. Under the bed however she discovered a single hair curler. Who curled their hair here? Carefully she picked it up with her handkerchief and slipped it into her pocket. She picked up the suitcase, which was still half full and began to empty it. She was beginning to think that there was nothing in there until as she took out the last skirt she discovered an envelope.
An envelope which read, “To be opened on my death.”
Mary-Lou quickly repacked the suitcase, before she set off to show Miss Marple and Nell Wilson what she had discovered.

On opening the letter Miss Marple looked up and said, “It’s a will.”
“She carried a will around with her!” Nell said incredulously.
Miss Marple nodded grimly, “We had better read it in front of everyone, we may be able to discover a clue then. I’ve often found that the reactions of people helps one greatly when solving murder mysteries.”
Mary-Lou and Nell looked at each other in amazement, how many murder’s had this frail, old lady solved?
It turned out that Hilda Annersley had left the majority of her possessions and estate to her great friend Nell Wilson. However there was one request that shocked everybody.
“I wish to leave £5,000 to Kathie Ferras, because she reminds me of how young and enthusiastic about life I once was.”
Everyone turned to stare at Kathie open mouthed when this was read out. Nobody there had ever really noticed an especial closeness between the two women. Blushing Kathie tried to avoid the stares but finding it impossible she eventually stood up and rushed out of the room.
Later that afternoon Len was talking to her husband, “Did you see the look on Kathie’s face when they read out Aunt Hilda’s will?”
“No.” Reg lied, of course he had been watching Kathie, how couldn’t he? Whenever they were in the same room he was unable to take his eyes off her.
“For just a tiny second she looked pleased, so pleased. She wanted the money badly I would have said.” Len said maliciously.
“That’s a load of rubbish!” Reg said indignantly.
“Do you want to know what I think?” Len’s voice lowered. “I think Kathie killed Aunt Hilda she must have known about the money, and Uncle Jem must have been about to discover something so she killed him too.”
Reg turned away in disgust, what Len was saying could not be true, he was sure Kathie was innocent. Neither of them had noticed Kathie standing just outside the door. She had heard every word.

Kathie, on hearing this, rushed upstairs. Slamming her bedroom door shut behind her she threw herself down onto her bed and began to cry. Would everyone think that she had killed Hilda now that she had inherited her money? She had been glad of the money, of course, it meant that she and Reg could escape easier than they had believed to be possible. But she had not wanted the only way for this to have occurred to be due to Hilda’s murder.
“What’s wrong dearest?” Nancy asked as she came into the room and saw her friend’s distress.
“Len thinks that I murdered Hilda for her money.” Kathie sobbed growing more and more hysterical. “She’s trying to turn Reg against me.”
“Did Len actually say that?” Nancy asked in shock, trying to ignore the reference to Reg.
“Yes I heard the words come out of her mouth. She hates me Nancy and I’m scared, so scared.”
Nancy resisted the malicious words, which the jealous part of her wished to say. Instead she took hold of Kathie and held her in her arms.
“There, there,” She soothed. “Everything will be ok believe me sweetheart. Even if things don’t work out the way you want them to then remember that I will always be here for you no matter what.”
Kathie looked up sharply. “Not in that way Nancy.”
“I know Kathie.” Nancy said sadly. “But I still care greatly for you and if there is anything that you want me to do to ease your pain and make things easier for you then just tell me. Remember that for me, won’t you.”
“There is one thing,” Kathie said slowly. “Make Len see sense that she and Reg have no future, that it’s me and Reg who belong. Help me get Len out of the way Nancy.”

Madge was still in bed. Her eyes filled with tears whenever Jem’s name was mentioned and most of the time she stared blankly into space. Joey was doing no good in fussing over her sister, and Jack had ordered her to leave her alone.
“Jo let her grieve on her own.”
“But Jack she needs someone with her, that dead look in her eyes its unnatural. There’s no knowing what she will do next, I’m scared for her Jack.”
Jack Maynard sighed, “Very well, Mary-Lou and Margot can go and sit with her. They are both matter of fact creatures and will be able to capture her attention.”
Madge’s eyes did indeed momentarily light up as she saw her niece and adopted niece enter the room.
“Oh girls,” Her once beautiful voice quivered. “Have you come to sit with me? That’s so kind of you.”
“It’s the least we could do Auntie.” Margot told her as she lent over her and kissed her forehead.
“Dear Margot.” Madge replied patting her on the head.
“I’m awfully sorry about Uncle Jem.” Mary-Lou said feeling that some acknowledgement of Jem’s death had to be made.
“So am I.” Madge told her wearily as tears filled her brown eyes. “I don’t suppose either of you heard anything did you? I know you’ve been told not to discuss it with me but please just answer this one question.”
“No I heard nothing.” Margot told her Aunt quickly.
Mary-Lou paused and thought, she had a half memory but was unsure of whether it had been a dream or not. Looking at Margot she decided that it could not have been a dream, however the only people she would confide this with would be Miss Marple and Nell. “No,” She said giving the impression that she had merely been considering the question, “I heard nothing. I was in my room all night.”
The conversation turned to other matters, mainly of the nature of the school and it’s latest doings.

“Where’s Miss Marple, Aunt Nell?” Mary-Lou asked hurriedly, having been searching for these two women since she had left Madge to try and get some sleep.
“She went to her room I think.” Nell told her. “Why have you discovered something?”
“Possibly.” Mary-Lou said silently, “Do you think she’d mind if we went and saw her?”
“No.” Nell said walking towards the hall. “She said that if we wanted her then to go on up.”
Mary-Lou nodded and hurried upstairs after Nell.
“Come in.” Miss Marple called on hearing the urgent knock on her door.
“We aren’t disturbing you I hope.” Mary-Lou asked politely, seeing that Miss Marple was sitting in her chair with a book in her hand.
“No.” Miss Marple told her as she rose from her seat and went to shut the door firmly behind her visitors. “Why what is it?”
“Mary-Lou has found something out.” Nell told her before turning to Mary-Lou and saying, “What is it Mary-Lou, tell us what you have discovered?”
Mary-Lou took a deep breath; “I was sitting with Aunt Madge, along with Margot. Aunt Madge begged us to tell her if we had heard anything last night. Margot declared that she had heard nothing and that she had stayed in her room all night. Yet, I thought she went out in the middle of the night. I’m not sure whether it was a dream or not but the more I think of it the less dream like it seems.”
“So are you saying that Margot was walking around last night?” Miss Marple asked as she opened a drawer.
Mary-Lou nodded as she watched Miss Marple pull out the curler, which had been discovered under Hilda Annersley’s bed.
“Why have you got that out?” Nell questioned.
“Margot has curly hair doesn’t she?” Miss Marple questioned.
“Yes but it’s natural!” Mary-Lou protested.
“Do you think Margot is the killer?” Nell asked wondering what Miss Marple’s opinion was.
“I don’t know.” Miss Marple sighed as she placed the curler back in the drawer. “It’s possible but then it’s equally possible that someone else is the killer.”
“Margot did have a devil when she was small.” Nell said slowly.
“I suppose it is possible that she is mentally unstable and listening to him again.” Mary-Lou wondered aloud. “What other reason would she kill for?”
Miss Marple shrugged, “I honestly don’t know. But I want you two to treat her in the same way. Do not accuse her or try to trick her into a confession. You don’t want to be the next victim, do you?

“Nancy can I talk with you in private please?” A thoughtful looking Len asked the question.
“Yes of course.” Nancy replied and mindful of the inquisitive look on Kathie’s face she followed Len out of the room.
“We’ll be safest in my bedroom, I feel.” Len commented as she led the way upstairs.
Nancy followed her wordlessly wondering what Len wished to discuss with her.
The room Len and Reg shared was a mess. Clothes were strewn all over the bed; Len cleared a spot for Nancy to sit on while she perched on the edge of a chair stacked with towels.
“You know what I said to you the other day.” Len began. “About how I would help you bring the school up to date and support you in your attempts to reform the school.”
“Yes, I remember.” Nancy confirmed wondering what Len was driving at.
“Well I’m afraid that I am no longer going to be able to help you in the way I had wished to.”
“Why not?” Nancy asked, confused over why Len had changed her mind.
“Well seeing as uncle Jem is no longer with us a new head will be needed for the Welsh San, and if all goes to plan then Reg will become that new head. I, naturally, will have to go and live in Britain with him. I could hardly remain on the Platz, could I? Dolly Edwards is getting on now, and hopefully I’ll be able to implement changes in Glendower House without much opposition.”
Nancy surprised at what she was hearing was absent-mindedly playing with a pair of Len’s stockings. “What does Reg think of this?” Nancy asked eventually.
“He does not know yet.” Len said simply. “But he’ll agree to it once I discuss it with him. I would appreciate it though if you did not mention this to anyone. Not even Kathie.”
Nancy was now sure that Len knew the truth about the relationship between Reg and Kathie and that Len wanted to move away from the Platz in order to escape Kathie and the hold she had over Reg.
“No I won’t tell Kathie.” Nancy said firmly as she stood up.
“Good I’m glad you understand,” Len said before muttering, “because she could destroy everything being the devious minx that she is.”

“Reg, can we talk.” Kathie asked quietly, touching her lover on the arm.
“What is it?” Reg asked her searchingly as he turned away from watching the never-ending snowfall.
They were alone in the library, Reg had gone there to think and Kathie had sought him out shortly after the conversation between Len and Nancy had taken place.
“Do you think I am the murderer?” Kathie asked him bluntly.
“No!” He exclaimed, throwing up his arms in shock, “Why do you ask me that?”
“I overheard your conversation with Len, she would love it to be me.”
“Look Kathie, I know it’s not you. You could never do that.” Reg told her putting his arm around her. “It’s not long now before we’ll be away from this mess. We’re going to start a new life Kathie, and you have to focus on that.”
“But how can I not worry about having the blamed pinned on me. I have a motive in the legacy Hilda left me… Everyone looks at me as if I am hiding something. It’s only you and Nancy who believe me.” Kathie was growing increasingly hysterical and she wished that she were a thousand miles away and that she had never accepted the invitation to come to the Tiernsee.
“Kathie calm down.” Reg implored. “You have to remember that there is not just you to consider anymore. You don’t want to upset the baby do you?”
Kathie gulped and tried to regain control of herself. “No of course not.” She said at last. “I just want to be away from here.”
“So do I.” Reg told her as he stroked her face. “But while the snow falls we are stuck here. You have to hang in there my love, it won’t be long before all this is over.”
“Sorry for being so weak and pathetic.” Kathie sniffed as she clung to Reg. “I needed to let you know how I feel though, I needed to let it out before I went mad.”
“You’re supposed to unburden yourself to me.” Reg told her gently before adding. “Don’t worry about Len, I’ll keep her in line.”

Reg left Kathie curled up in an armchair with a book. He was worrying over her; it had taken a considerable time for him to calm her down. He was on his way upstairs to tell Len the truth about his relationship with Kathie. He knew that until the snow stopped the atmosphere would be unpleasant to say the least but he also knew that he needed to support Kathie, during this difficult time, and he could only do that if the truth were out.
At the top of the stairs Margot ran into him looking pale and flustered.
“Are you alright Margot?” He asked in concern.
“No, I’m rather not.” Margot muttered vaguely before pushing herself past him and running down the stairs.
Reg looked after her with some confusion but then shaking his head he decided that there was nothing he could do. He could not delay talking to Len for any longer than he already had. As he walked down the corridor, he could see that the door to his and Len’s room was already open and as he entered the room he gasped in shock at the sight before his eyes.
Sprawled out on the bed was a motionless Len. Her violet coloured eyes were blankly turned towards the ceiling, her face was a light shade of blue, and tightly tied around her neck was one of her own stockings.
The murderer had struck again.

Everyone was gathered in the living room. Jack Maynard, hit hard by the death of his eldest child, was standing in front of the fire his face grey and his eyes full of sorrow. He had taken it upon himself to find out who the murderer was. Who was it that had killed his child, his closest friend, and a lady who he held in the deepest respect?
Addressing the room he said, “It saddens me to say this but I have reached the conclusion that it is not simply possible for there to be someone hiding here. The murderer must be one of us.”
Exclamations and protests erupted as soon as the words had left his mouth, no one wished to believe that to be true. Holding up his hands he made them all fall silent and continued on from what he was saying.
“What we have to ask ourselves is who would want to kill Len, a honest sweet loving young women, Jem, a generous gifted man, and Hilda, a wise and much respected lady.”
“But surely nobody would want any of them to be dead.” Joey said quietly holding on to Margot, both were deeply shaken by the death of Len and Jack was worried over how much more of this they would be able to take.
“Someone must do.” Jack told her. “Now I think that we should all say where we were this afternoon in the hour before Len’s body was discovered. I will begin, I was in the drawing room reading, Nancy was with me before she went upstairs with Len, Kathie was also there for a while, after Kathie had left Miss Marple and Nell came and sat by the fire.” Turning to Joey he said, “Tell us what you did my love.”
“You know where I was though.” Joey said in confusion, “Why do I have to tell you again?”
“The others need to know.” Jack told his wife patiently.
Shaking her head Joey did what her husband told her to. “Jack told me that I should try and get some sleep, so I was in my room trying to do so. I was just beginning to dose off when I heard Reg’s exclamations, I went to see what was happening and found my baby dead.” Joey’s voice broke up and clinging to Margot tears trickled down her face.
“Thank-you Jo.” Jack said kindly as he sat down next to her and put his arm around her. “Margot if you would like to continue.”
“I was reading in my room the whole time. I had previously been sitting with Aunt Madge,” Margot answered, “I went to make a cup of tea and when I came back upstairs it was to hear that my sister was dead.”
Nell Wilson sitting next to Margot was next and did not wait for Jack to prompt her. “As you said earlier Jack I was sitting in the drawing room with Miss Marple, before then I had been with Miss Marple and Mary-Lou in Miss Marple’s bedroom.”
“And you can confirm that Miss Marple?” Jack asked the old lady in what he thought to be a kindly manner but which was actually a patronising tone.
“Yes indeed Dr Maynard.” Miss Marple answered.
“Very well,” Jack paused before turning to Mary-Lou. “Where were you after being in Miss Marple’s room?”
“I went to have a bath.” Mary-Lou told him.
Jack nodded before turning to his sister-in-law. “Madge?”
“I was in bed. Margot and Mary-Lou had been sitting with me earlier, I was asleep when Len’s body was discovered.” Madge was pale and there were heavy bags under her once bright and dancing eyes.
“Thank-you Madge. Nancy?”
“I was talking with Len until about fifteen minutes before Reg discovered what had happened, after we had stopped talking I had gone to my room to think things through. Kathie came into the room briefly to get a handkerchief before going back downstairs.”
“Kathie, what were you doing?”
“I was sitting in the drawing room, then I went upstairs as Nancy said. When I came back downstairs I went into the library and was talking to Reg.”
“Very well.” Jack said as his eyes lingered over her face, which to his eye was rather peaky. “Finally you Reg.”
“I was in the library for most of the time watching the snow fall, Kathie joined me and we had a bit of a chat. I went to look for Len,” Reg paused he was not sure whether or not he should mention his brief encounter with Margot.
“What is it Reg?” Jack questioned knowing his son-in-law was holding something back.
“It’s probably nothing but just before I discovered what had happened to Len I saw Margot at the top of the stairs, she looked pale and rather flustered.”
All eyes in the room turned to look at Margot who with her head buried in her Mamma’s shoulder was sobbing uncontrollably.

The little colour that had been left in Jack’s face drained at this point. He had always known of Margot’s temper and how she had a tendency to loose control when she saw red. Had she lost control with disastrous results this time?
“What is it baby?” Joey cooed softly, her mind not being as suspicious as her husbands.
Margot continued to sob and there was no indication that she would stop soon.
Everyone in the room watched her, Miss Marple could not help but be reminded of another red headed young girl who she had come across when murder had been involved.
“Margot, speak tell us what you know?” Jack pleaded with his daughter, every inch of his heart hoping that his daughter was not the murderer. His head meanwhile kept telling him that she was a prime suspect, despite the apparent lack of motive.
Margot wiped her red, swollen eyes with the back of her hand and choked, “I didn’t do anything to Len. I had nothing to do with her death, I loved her so much, more than any of you.” Addressing the whole room as one she continued. “Len, Con and I are, or were, each others one and all. Mamma and Papa have to love all the others just as much as they love us and are unable to love us with their heart and souls in the way we did toward one another. Reg never has loved Len, though it took him years to realise that to be the case, but since he has encountered true love, there has been only Con and I to love Len in the way she deserved.” Several pairs of eyes looked at Reg, who stared back with a defiant look in his eye, while Kathie blushing brightly was unable to conceal from the others that it was she that Reg loved. “Con loves Roger though and can’t love as strongly as I do.” Margot paused and more tears slid out of eyes, there was silence in the room everyone was wondering what she would say next. “It was me who found Len to be dead, not Reg. I thought that it was a nightmare at first, how could my triplet leave me, how could I be alive when she was dead. I thought that if I were to go away, if I were to go downstairs then it would not be true. That Len would come downstairs at dinnertime and be her normal loving self. But she is dead, and I’m never going to be able to talk to her again. It’s just Con and I now, and Con is not here when I want her so much.”
“So do I.” Joey said through her own tears, which had fallen heavily throughout Margot’s speech. “So do I.”
Jack drew his wife and daughter into a hug, relieved that his heart had been right. Margot was not the murderer, he was sure of it.

“What did you make of all that then?” Mary-Lou asked Miss Marple and Miss Wilson eagerly as soon as they were alone.
“I don’t know.” Miss Marple said slowly. “It has certainly given us a lot to think about.”
“Kathie and Reg.” Nell said shaking her head after some moments of silence. “I suspected nothing.”
“I had thought there was someone else in Kathie’s life.” Mary-Lou admitted. “But I would never have put her and Reg together.”
“I wonder how Nancy feels about it.” Miss Marple asked her-self before adding, “After all she is evidently in love with Kathie.”
Nell looked at Miss Marple in astonishment, she had never dreamt that Nancy’s feelings toward Kathie were anything more than platonic.
“Do you mean that…?” Nell’s voice trailed off.
“Yes, Nancy holds feelings for the same sex and not the opposite.” Miss Marple told her in a matter of fact manner with a twinkle in her eye.
“Did you know this?” Nell, in a state of shock, demanded of Mary-Lou.
“Kathie told me about it.” Mary-Lou admitted. “She does not feel the same and has been rather upset by the situation. But she is determined that it won’t come between their friendship. Although it’s hard for Kathie I do feel sorry for Nancy, she would do anything for Kathie.”
“Would she kill for her?” Miss Marple questioned sharply thinking that Nancy had been the last person who had seen Len alive before she was killed.
“What do you mean?” Mary-Lou asked running her hands through her curls in distress. “Are you saying that Nancy could be the murderer because she wants Kathie to be happy?”
“It’s a possibility, but she’s not the prime suspect.”
“Kathie herself is that isn’t she?” Nell put in.
“Yes Kathie and her lover Reg certainly have a motive for each of the victims so far. Miss Annersley’s money, the opportunity to gain Sir Jem’s position at the Welsh San, and obviously with Len out of the way they are free to marry.”
“So you think that they are the most likely culprits.” Mary-Lou asked frowning.
“On paper they are.” Miss Marple said. “But whether they actually are it is hard to tell.”
“What about Margot?” Nell asked thinking back to their previous discussion.
“Margot…” Miss Marple repeated the name. “I do not know what to make of Margot. She is concealing something I’m sure, but then again I would not be surprised if everyone here had something to hide.”
Miss Marple appeared not to notice the faint blush, which had crept over Nell Wilson’s face. Was it time for her to tell people about her dark and terrible secret? The secret which had haunted her from the days before she had joined the Chalet School.

Sorry I've been a bit rubbish at updating, have been stressing over my MA application...

“Jack why would someone do this to me?” Joey asked her husband wearily. “This killer has taken one of my best friends, my brother in law, and now my daughter out of my life. No parent should bury a child, why would someone make me bury mine.”
“I don’t know why this is happening.” Jack said with a sigh as he placed a protective arm around his wives slender shoulder. “The most likely explanation is that the person whose doing this is mad, no sane person could watch us all suffer like this surely?”
“But nobody here seems mad. We are among people who we have known for years, people who we love, and who love us, why would they put us through this? We’d know if they were mad. There must be someone else who’s responsible for this mess.” Jo’s eyes were wide and fearful, she was pale and shaking, Jack knew that the events over the past few days had scarred her deeply.
“As much as I don’t want to have to admit it, I must say that it is most likely that the murderer is someone we know.”
Joey opened her mouth to protest but the words never came out, as there was a knock at the door.
“Come in,” Jack called glad for the interruption, he did not want to have the same conversation with Joey all night.
“I’m not intruding I hope.” Miss Marple’s voice inquired. “I just wanted to see whether there was anything I could get for young Joey.”
“Oh Aunt Jane, do come in.” Joey said. “I’m afraid this must not be the holiday that you were expecting.”
“Well no it wasn’t,” Miss Marple admitted before adding in an undertone, “But I’m used to murder in all kind of places now.”
There was an awkward silence before Miss Marple continued, “I just wanted to say how sorry I am about Len’s death, it’s not right that someone so young should die.”
“Thank-you,” Jo answered softly as she blinked back the tears, which were filling, up her eyes. “I just wish that I had gone into speak to her or something. I could hear her talking to Nancy when I was trying to get to sleep. After a while the voices began to drift away, I remember hearing a door shut and creaking in the corridor but that was it… the next thing I knew Reg had discovered that my lovely daughter was dead.” The tears were now running freely down Jo’s face. “Excuse me,” She stammered.
“I think it’s best if she got some sleep.” Jack said pointedly.
Miss Marple seemed reluctant to take the hint. “You don’t think that I could just ask her one question do you, what she was saying might be of significance.”
“You can ask her in the morning.” Jack told her curtly, as Joey turned away from Miss Marple, making it obvious she did not want to talk any more. “She’s been through enough today, I’ll make her a sleeping tonic, she will never sleep otherwise.”
Miss Marple nodded and left the room determined to talk with Joey in the morning.

Reg woke late the next morning; he had not slept well. Thoughts of Len, Kathie and his unborn child had occupied his dreams and mind all night. He did not fall into a deep sleep until the early morning and consequently did not wake to the noise of the others getting up.
As he was getting dressed there was a frantic knocking at his bedroom door.
“Who is it he called?” As he hastily put on a shirt.
“It’s me.” Kathie’s voice answered.
Smiling Reg opened the door, his smile quickly died when he saw the expression on Kathie’s face.
“What is it?” He asked anxiously pulling her into the room with him and shutting the door behind her.
“There’s been another murder.” Kathie said quietly, she was pale and Reg guessed that her nights sleep had not been much better than his.
“Who?” He asked quickly.
“It’s Joey.” Kathie whispered as she wiped her eyes. Like many of the other Chalet School mistresses Kathie was very fond of Joey.
“Joey.” Reg repeated in shock, his mother-in-law had always boasted that she’d live to be a hundred and he had agreed with her. Underneath her fragile air Joey had been strong.
“How did she die?” He asked Kathie as he moved away from her and opened the curtains.
“We don’t know, probably poison… Miss Marple asked if you could take a look at her body to see what you think. Jack’s in no state to do it.”
“No of course he isn’t.” Reg sighed as he held out his hand for Kathie to come to him, he took her in his arms and stared at the snow, which continued to fall steadily. “I wish this snow storm would ease up a bit. I want to take you away from this madhouse. I can see how it’s affecting you, how it’s affecting us all in fact… It reminds one of a murder novel doesn’t it? Lets just hope that this nightmare ends soon darling.”
“I want it to end so badly Reg, slowly but surely our numbers are shrinking, one of us could be next…”
“Don’t say that my love.” Reg held Kathie tightly, “It simply must end soon, it must.”
Kathie said nothing for some time before she suddenly said, “Reg promise me that you’ll stay by my all the time from now on, I think we should not let each other out of sight. It’s the only way I’d feel safe, I don’t care what the others think.”
“Yes we’ll do that.” Reg promised, “I won’t let anyone harm you or the baby Kathie I promise.”

Thanks for all the comments! Only a short update tonight but it gives you all something to think about!

Once again the now rapidly dwindling household were summoned together. Jack and Margot were clearly broken by Joey’s death on top of Len’s, Madge was pale and shaking violently, while Mary-Lou had a look of determination on her young face-she would find her Aunt Joey’s killer.
“Well as you all know,” Reg, with Kathie at his side, began. “There has been another murder, it appears that Jo was poisoned.” Turning to Jack he said, “Someone has tampered with the one of the powders you use to make up the sleeping draughts. She would not have been in pain, and she would not have known that she would never wake again.”
Jack stared at Reg in shock, “But why didn’t I realise when I was making her a sleeping draught last night, why didn’t I notice that something was wrong? I knew there was a murderer in this house, why didn’t I check that they hadn’t tampered with my medical supplies.”
“You weren’t to know Jack,” Nancy said softly. “Don’t blame yourself, you have to try and remain strong for the children.”
“And what am I going to tell them?” Jack said, wiping his wet eyes. “That this trip to our beloved Tiernsee has ended in a quadruple tragedy. The children have lost their mother, eldest sister, uncle, and a loyal and trusted family friend. How can I explain this to them?”
Silence descended, as no one knew what to say to this. There were no words to take away Jack’s pain.
“Who is doing this to us?” Mary-Lou said angrily, punching the arm of the chair she was sitting on. “Why are they doing this? Is it a game to them?”
“Someone’s mind has become warped.” Nell replied. “It’s the only explanation.”
“Or maybe someone’s killer blood has emerged to torture us.” It was Madge who said this, and her detached tone sent shivers up everyone’s spine. “After all someone here isn’t who they claim to be, isn’t that right Nell? Or should I say Louisa French?”

An explanation for you all!

“You knew?” Nell whispered, as she wrung her hands in agitation.
“Yes I knew.” Madge replied coldly, “Hilda told me after you confided in her. I knew that your Father was the serial killer John French, like Father like daughter they say. I should never have let you remain at the school, it’s you isn’t it. You’re the one tormenting us, you killed Jem, Joey, Len and Hilda, it was you.”
“I have not and never would take a life.” Nell said shakily, before getting to her feet and rushing out of the room.
Madge had already dissolved into tears and Nancy went to comfort her.
Mary-Lou was torn between going to her Aunt Madge’s aid and discussing the latest development with Miss Marple.
“Do you belief that Miss Wilson is the murderer?” Miss Marple asked Mary-Lou in a low tone. “Think carefully before you answer, you have known her longer than I.”
Mary-Lou tilted her head to one side and pondered the question. “No.” She answered. “When Aunt Hilda died it seemed like part of Aunt Nell did also, I’m positive she isn’t the murderer. Aunt Hilda was her best friend, Aunt Joey was like her sister, Len was her god-daughter and I’ve sometimes thought that if Uncle Jem had met Aunt Nell first he would have married her rather than Aunt Madge.”
“I share your opinion.” Miss Marple told her. “Now come quick let’s go and find Miss Wilson, I fear she may be in danger unless we protect her.”
They found Nell crying in the small room which had been her bedroom since the trip had begun.
“Now listen to Miss Marple and I Aunt Nell.” Mary-Lou said sitting next to Nell and taking hold of her cold hands. “Both of us believe that you are not the killer, we know you would never harm a living soul, and Aunt Madge knows that deep down to-she would never have kept you at the school if she didn’t.”
Nell wiped her eyes with her already wet handkerchief. “Thank-you both of you.” She sniffed. “You can’t imagine what it has been like having all these murders happen here, it has been like reliving the past all over again… what my Father did was unforgivable and for the last thirty years I have been trying to forget.”
“I remember the case.” Miss Marple said with a sigh. “He killed four women didn’t he.”
“Yes, that’s right. Father had a Jekyll and Hyde personality, and as the years past it came to be the case that he was more often nasty rather than nice. He used to beat my Mother, the screams I used to hear as a child…” Nell shuddered. “I went away to University, and because of his rages I didn’t go home as often as I should have… He poisoned Mother and my little sister Cherry and then bludgeoned Bessie and Ethel, our two maids to death. I should have been there for them all, I should have protected them.”
“If you had been there Aunt Nell then you’d have died to.” Mary-Lou said sensibly before adding, “What happened to him?”
“He was found guilty of course and he hung for his crimes. I changed my name to avoid association with him, the police advised it, Helena was my second name and Wilson my Mothers maiden name. I only told Hilda and now you two the truth of my past, please don’t blame me for recent events because my Father was a murderer.”
“Mary-Lou has already told you that we don’t believe that you’re the killer.” Miss Marple told her firmly. “And us three are going to get to the bottom of this mystery as if we don’t then I fear there will be yet more victims.”

“Well what are we waiting for!” Mary-Lou demanded. “Let’s solve this terrible mess sooner rather than later.”
“Yes lets.” Nell agreed with a nod, she wanted this nightmare to end.
Miss Marple looked at them searchingly for a moment before saying, “Now I want you to tell me all you know about the victims, maybe we will be able to find a pattern which will lead us to the murderer. Tell me all you know about Hilda Annersley please Nell.”
Nell took a deep breath and began to speak, “Hilda joined the Chalet School a year or two after I did, she was about five years older than me and before joining the school she had worked at a boarding school in the South East of England. She was the youngest of four, her older siblings were all boys and her mother had died when she was young. Her Mother’s death affected her badly and she rarely talked of it.
Hilda became head when Mademoiselle LePattre, who was the head of the school after Madge left to marry Sir Jem, was taken ill. She was head of the school for the rest of her life. The only exceptions were when the school was closed for a year after we had to leave the Tyrol, when she missed a year after being in a bus crash during the war-I was so worried she would die then, and then finally a few years ago she took a term off to attend an education conference.”
“And who deputised for her when she was away from school?” Miss Marple asked.
“I was also involved in the bus accident, I broke my leg.” Nell told her. “I went back to school after half a term though, a temporary head had been appointed and she wasn’t treating the girls as we had done. She cared more for exam results than for them as individuals. Once Miss Bubb was gone I acted as head, when Hilda came back we shared the position until I became head of St Mildred’s, the Chalet School finishing branch. Nancy acted as head when Hilda went away for her conference.”
“Did Nancy like being Head?” Miss Marple asked Mary-Lou this question.
“I don’t think she did at first.” Mary-Lou said slowly. “Everyone who knew Auntie Hilda was in awe of her see and I think Nancy was convinced that she would be a disaster and that the Middles would not show her the same respect they showed Auntie Hilda. As the term passed by though and Nancy grew more comfortable in the position I think she began to enjoy being the Head and sometimes I get the impression that it was hard for her to adjust to just being an ordinary mistress again.”
“Thank-you both.” Miss Marple said. “That was very insightful, now Nell will you next tell me all you know of Sir Jem.”

Post subject:  Re: Murders in Tyrol, updated 24/04/2009

I don't know if anyone is still interested in this but when I was looking at my unfinished drabbles earlier on today this was the only one that I was inspired to write more of. Writers Block is a terrible thing!

“When I first met Sir Jem he and Madge were already engaged, they married at the end of the first summer term I spent at the school, he had built a Sanatorium in the Tyrol for TB sufferers. A year after they married Madge had their first child, David, and when Dick and Mollie Bettany visited from India they left their eldest two children to the care of Madge and Jem. The Russell’s eventually cared for the four eldest Bettany children, as well as Robin Humphries and for about a year they cared for Stacie Benson to. They welcomed everyone and were friendly to all. After Sybil was born Jem’s sister Margot came from Australia to find him and her two girls joined the Russell nursery.”
“To you they were a happy family then?” Miss Marple asked with interest.
“Yes…” Nell replied a tad uncertainly, “At least they were at first but then over the years I think there were some bad times. I don’t think Madge particularly enjoyed having to leave her home and children for long periods of time when Jem was invited to medical conferences in Canada and Australia.”
“And,” Mary-Lou butted in, “I sometimes got the feeling that Auntie Madge blamed Uncle Jem for Sybil and Josette living so far away.”
“Yes, they married Australian’s didn’t they?” Miss Marple checked. “And made their home there.”
“That’s right,” Nell confirmed, “Though if what Mary-Lou says is true then it is hypocritical of Madge, as she insisted on Sybil and Josette travelling to Australia with them.”
“Now that is interesting.” Miss Marple acknowledged. “Now tell me about Len, she always struck me as being a very serious person.”
“Oh yes she was.” Mary-Lou quickly agreed. “It was because she was the eldest and had to be responsible for the others, Auntie Joey always used to say so.”
“Though she had two sisters the same age as her?”
“Yes Miss Marple, and I know it sounds strange when you put it like that but it is true. Len was always serious, hard-working, and responsible.” Nell stated, “When she put her mind to something then she always achieved her goal.”
“Like marrying Reg?” Miss Marple asked.
Mary-Lou said thoughtfully, “You know I think you are right. Auntie Joey always used to say that it was Reg chasing Len but now I think it may have been the other way around and Auntie Joey did not want to admit that her daughter was chasing a man.”
“Len always wanted to marry a doctor,” Nell said thoughtfully, “She used to confide in me and when talking about what she wanted to do when she was older it was always very much set in stone. She’d become head mistress of a girl’s school and introduce progressive changes, may-be even go co-ed, and marry a doctor.”
“Do either of you think Reg ever loved Len?”
“No.” Mary-Lou said shaking her head, “I think he thought he was in love with her, and knew that if he married her it would help further his career, but I don’t think he experienced true love until he spent time with Kathie.”
“Thank-you, now finally I know all about Joey of course but can either of you think of any reason why anyone here may want her dead?”
“No none whatsoever.” Nell said firmly. “There are motives for all the other deaths, the head positions in the School and the San becoming available, and Kathie and Reg being free to marry but I can’t think of any motive for Joey’s death.”
“Me neither.” Mary-Lou added.
“That’s what I thought too.” Miss Marple told them, “Which leads me to believe that not all of the motives that you mentioned are necessarily the reasons for why the murders took place.”

Delighted to see the return of this. I can't now imagine who the murderer can possibly be except Mary-Lou and what's the bet that she's the next in line to meet her maker through the hands of someone else.
Thanks, Carys.

I'm glad so many of you are glad to see this again. I am now on quite a roll with writing this so here is some more for you!

That night after a very sombre dinner, where everyone struggled to eat, the thought had crossed everyone’s minds that the food might be poisoned, Jack made an announcement.
“As three of the victims of these horrific crimes have met their end in the night I suggest that none of us should sleep alone. Those of you who are already sharing rooms should remain where you are but Reg I think you had better sleep on a camp bed in my and Joey’s room.” Jack’s voice trailed off he could not accept that his wife was no longer alive. After finding out about Reg and Kathie’s betrayal of Len he did not relish the prospect the sharing a room with his son-in-law but he wanted these murders to stop.
“Madge, as you have the largest room,” he continued. “I suggest that Miss Marple and Nell come and share your room. Unless,” he paused remembering the accusations Madge had thrown at Nell earlier, “Nell would prefer sharing with Kathie and Nancy?”
“I think I would thank you Jack.” Nell said quietly. “As long as that is fine with you both?”
Kathie nodded and Nancy said, “Of course, you can have my bed and I’ll sleep on a camp bed on the floor.”
“Good that’s all agreed then, I suggest that nobody leaves their room until morning as it is not safe here.” Jack said with relief, he had been worried that some of the party would oppose his idea. “If some of you will help with the camp beds then that would be great.”
“I’ll help.” Mary-Lou offered.
“So shall I.” Kathie added.
The party went their separate ways. Kathie followed Reg to his room, where he began to gather the belongings he would need for the night.
“I wish I could stay with you.” She told him.
“I know my love I feel the same, but although people now know about us I don’t think they would accept us sleeping in the same bed.”
“You’re the only person I feel safe with though.” Kathie said quietly.
“Darling you’ll be fine; Nancy would never hurt you-though she may hurt me!” Reg’s attempt at a joke did not bring a smile to Kathie’s worried face and he quickly continued. “And despite hearing that Nell’s father was a serial killer I very much doubt that she is the person terrorising us. Besides there will be three of you in your room so even if one of them is the killer they will not harm you when there is another person in the room.”
“I suppose so.” Kathie agreed. “But that doesn’t take away the fact that one person will be sharing with the murderer.”
Reg sighed; this point had not escaped him either. “I know but if they attempt anything then we will hopefully know who the murderer is.”
“I just want to get away from here.” Kathie said holding out her arms to Reg.
“Me to, love, me to.” Reg agreed engulfing Kathie in his arms.

Although everyone thought they would have trouble falling asleep by midnight the chalet was silent.
Mary-Lou was dreaming of her sister by marriage Verity and her young family when she awoke. Half asleep she struggled to remember where she was before recent events came flooding back. She shivered and tried to fall back to sleep, but sleep would not come. Deciding to read a couple of pages of her book she turned on the lamp next to her bed, hoping that it would not wake Margot up. As light flooded Mary-Lou’s corner of the room she glanced at Margot’s bed to make sure she did not stir before realising Margot was not there!
Mary-Lou quickly turned the lamp off, she rarely felt scared but she was now. Why had Margot disobeyed her Father’s order? The only explanation Mary-Lou could come up with was that Margot was the murderer… Mary-Lou pulled the blankets tightly around her and hoped that Margot would not realise she was awake when she returned. It seemed to Mary-Lou that hours past before Margot came back to bed, she only realised that she had when she heard the bed springs creak and a couple of minutes later Margot begin to snore. It appeared that Margot had learnt to be silent with her movements when necessary.
Mary-Lou wished morning would come quickly; she wanted to share what she had discovered with Miss Marple and Nell.

The next morning Mary-Lou woke up with some trepidation, she feared that another victim had been discovered. But all seemed calm. She could hear people moving around, nothing seem to be untoward. Slowly she opened her eyes and saw Margot sitting at the dressing table calmly brushing her red gold curls.
“Morning Margot,” Mary-Lou tried to act like normal, “how did you sleep?”
“Like a log Mary-Lou,” Margot answered. “I thought it would be impossible after Mamma and Len but I think I exhausted myself so much from crying that I needed a night of rest. How about you?”
“Oh I kept on waking up and finding it impossible to get back to sleep again.” Mary-Lou admitted.
To Mary-Lou’s relief everyone was accounted for at breakfast.
“How long do you think this snow will last?” Nancy asked.
“There’s no telling.” Nell answered. “Snow storms in Tyrol can go on for days, even weeks, I should think that it’ll come to an end soon though.”
“What are we going to do when it stops?” Reg asked. “I mean what are we going to tell the police? One person here has murdered four of our friends and family. We are all going to be suspects until the police establish who the murderer is.”
“We’re just going to have to let the police do their job.” Jack told him. “That may mean staying here for a few more days, oh not in this chalet of course but at the hotel, I doubt any of us will be permitted to leave until the police have established who the murderer is.”
Nobody relished the prospect of this. They had all been looking forward to the end of the storm as an opportunity to escape the Tyrol. Everyone realised that what Jack said was true though and if they attempted to leave then they would appear to be the murderer.
“Miss Marple,” Mary-Lou said after breakfast, “May I have a word with you and Aunt Nell please?”
“Yes of course, shall we go to the library?” Miss Marple said putting her knitting to one side.
The three women filed into the library and Mary-Lou told them what she had discovered the previous night.
“But why did she sneak out like that?” Nell wondered.
“That is what I intend to find out.” Miss Marple stated firmly. “I think it is time I had a talk with Margot.”
“Oh Miss Marple do be careful,” Mary-Lou implored. “If she is the murderer she isn’t safe to be around.”
“Don’t worry.” Miss Marple told her grimly, “I have a plan.”

I'm really glad to see this back, too, thanks Carys. It's really scary now, knowing that if you were sharing a room it might be with a murderer. I really hope Miss Marple's going to sort this out soon.

Fatima says'...I really hope Miss Marple's going to sort this out soon.' Not too soon I hope as then the story will finish and I'm enjoying it and don't want it to end. Selfish, maybe, but I'll sacrifice the rest of the party except perhaps Nell -oh and the killer I suppose, so that the story carries on a while longer!!
Seriously though, thanks Carys.

“Margot,” Miss Marple addressed the youngest triplet, “I am at a loose end and was wondering if you would do me a favour.”
“Of course what is it?” Margot longed to be asked to do something useful, she wanted to take her mind off the deaths of her mother and sister.
“I’ve finished my knitting and I was wondering if you would mind if I made you a cardigan? Your mother had asked me to make you one before she” Miss Marple’s voice trailed off, “Well er before she died, and I’d like to fulfil her final request.”
“Oh Miss Marple, that would be wonderful.” Margot said sincerely her eyes bright, “Did Mamma say what colour she wished it to be?”
“Lime green.”
“Yes that is, or rather was Mamma’s favourite colour.” Margot’s voice trailed away, how could her Mother be dead, who had murdered her?
Miss Marple noticing how emotionally fragile Margot was took her by the arm saying, “Now why don’t we go upstairs to my room and I can take your measurements.”
Margot followed Miss Marple mutely out of the room and upstairs.
“I was thinking of using this pattern dear,” Miss Marple said passing the knitting magazine to Margot. “And luckily as I know you Mother had a preference for lime green I bought a fair bit with me. Do you like it?”
“Oh yes Miss Marple it is lovely.” Margot answered in delight.
“I am glad, now if you will just stand up I’ll measure you.”
Miss Marple took out her tape measure and began to note down the necessary measurements she required.
“Have you been sleeping well, Margot?” Miss Marple asked conversationally, “You look terribly tired to me, though of course that’s understandable-I imagine we are all having trouble sleeping.”
“I’ve been sleeping as well as can be expected.” Margot said with a shrug.
“Mary-Lou has not been sleeping at all well, the poor girl.” Miss Marple continues, “She’s been having the most peculiar dreams.”
“What kind of dreams?” Margot stiffened.
“Well last night she dreamt that you left the bedroom in the middle of the night.” Miss Marple waited for Margot to respond, when she did not she continued. “Unless it wasn’t a dream Margot, and it was reality.”
Margot slowly nodded, she looked terrified.
Miss Marple led Margot towards the arm chair and asked her, “Why did you leave your room Margot when your father specifically forbid it.”
“I can’t say.” Margot whispered.
Miss Marple crossed the room and took something out of her sewing case, “Does it have anything to do with this?” She held in the air the curler that had been found underneath Hilda Annersley’s bed.
“Yes.” Margot whimpered looking as if she was about to cry.
“I thought so,” Miss Marple said before turning to her wardrobe and saying, “Mary-Lou you can get out now, I know Margot is not the killer.”
Mary-Lou tumbled out of the wardrobe and landed at the feet of a satisfied Miss Marple and an incredulous looking Margot.
“Go and get Nell, Mary-Lou and bring her here.” Miss Marple told her in a don’t ask any questions tone of voice, “Margot is going to tell us all about the curlers.”
