Inspired by a recent post on GO – the bunny bit hard and it offered a bit of light relief from Rosalie!

"There was a reason she was always known as Madame, you know.” And the speaker – an elderly lady with greying hair, carefully arranged in earphones – a style of hairdressing she had rigidly stuck to over the decades, firmly resisting every attempt from her very long family to adopt something a little more up to date – paused, looking mischeviously up at her visitor. The visitor – herself firmly established on the leeward side of middle age – looked puzzled and directed an enquiring gaze at the occupant of the crisply made bed, and the speaker, confident that her talent for hooking a captive reader with an intriguing opening sentence remained intact, lay back on her pillows, a small sigh of satisfaction hovering on her lips.

Oh all right then - as you ask so nicely. I have umm. taken certain liberties with a book which may well be quite familiar to you all...
“If only I knew what to do with you girls!” said Dick in worried tones.

“Oh, you needn’t worry about us!” replied Madge with a merry laugh, slipping her hand through his arm as she announced “I’ve got a plan all ready for us.”

“Let’s hear it” commanded her brother, with a considerable degree of trepidation, an uneasiness which was compounded by Madge’s evident unwillingness to get to the point. As she still hesitated he added impatiently “Go on – let’s hear the worst”.

“You see,” began his sister “whatever happens, Joey and I must keep together. We are all agreed on that point. But – there’s no money; or at any rate very little. You can’t keep us on your pay; that’s quite out of the question! So last night I thought and thought after I had gone to bed; and honestly, I think my plan’s the only one possible.”

“Oh, for Heaven’s sake, cut all that!” groaned her brother. “What do you want to do?”

“Start a brothel,” came the sufficiently startling reply. But at the look of complete horror on Dick’s face Madge added hastily – And a school – but we haven’t got enough capital to start one up straight away – so I thought we could open a high class brothel for a while until we had enough money to start up a school properly. I’ve spoken to Mademoiselle La Patrre and she said she was so fed up with trying to drum some understanding of French into a group of spoilt brats that she would be quite happy to give it up for a while and earn her living in a more – um relaxed – manner.” She sat back in the large armchair conveniently located by the fire and waited anxiously for Dick’s response to her little speech.

There was silence from the opposite side of the room – and Madge, keen to convince Dick of the advantages of her great idea, continued to elaborate on the plans she had made during the long dark night. “Of course we couldn’t set one up here – for one thing we want to sell this house – and for another I just don’t think we would get the custom.” She paused again and as there was still no response continued “While I did think of coming back to India with you and starting my little business enterprise there – sorry did you say something? – anyway I can’t do that – the climate is not good for Joey. So what I thought of was this. Do you remember that little lake in the Austrian Tyrol we spent the summer five years ago – the Tiern See? – well I had thought of moving there. I’m sure we could get lots of business from the hotel – you do remember that nice Herr Braun don’t you – and I’m sure we’d do well. Well what do you think Dick? …..Dick?..... Dick!”

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 15/01

And the next installment...

Dick did eventual recover from the shock his sister’s announcement had given him, although he was never quite the same again. However he knew that Madge had set her heart on this project and he had neither the will nor the authority to turn her from her purpose. If she was determined to do this, he knew that nothing he could say or do would prevent her from carrying out her plans. He just thanked God on a daily basis that he would be in India – a very long way away.

*******

For some reason or another Dick had been anxious to get their affairs settled so he could return to India as quickly as possible, and he bustled about with such effect that by Mid-April, all were ready to set off. Madge had insisted that he escort Mademoiselle and as much of their luggage as he could manage before he went, and Dick, resigned now to the inevitable, set off for Innsbruck a week before Madge followed with Joey and Grizel Cochrane - a fellow Tavertonian whose parents were keen to see her safely ensconced as far away from the family home as was possible.

*********

“Rien a declarer?” asked the customs man – a twinkle in his eye as he recalled some of the contents of the suitcase which had recently been displayed to his astonished eyes. Just wait till his break! And they said the English were repressed!

“Rien a declarer.” Replied Madge firmly, anxious that neither Joey nor Grizel should enquire too closely about the unusually long time the customs officers had spent looking at their luggage. Joey was usually the first to notice anything out of the ordinary but she was all eyes – an inevitable sign of tiredness with her – and was also so excited about being in France again, that she noticed nothing.

*******

They found themselves in a carriage in which the only other occupant was a little fat man in a loud check suit who was mopping his face with a white handercheif adorned with scarlet spots.

“Eh, it’s ot!” he exclaimed, his accent at once betraying him for a Yorkshire man.

Grizel waited for Miss Bettany to give the man a snubbing set down – just as her stepmother would have done, and indeed Madge had just been about to do so when the movement of the man’s jacket as he wiped that sweaty brow had revealed a notecase that was stuffed rather fuller than the average counterpane. Madge checked hrself and set out to make herself agreeable.

She quickly found that the little man was rolling in it and often travelled on the Continent. When Joey ad Grizel had disappeared off to “make themselves tidy”, she took the opportunity to suggest with a suggestive wink that if he ever felt a bit lonely and fancied an hour or two or female company, he could do worse than come and look her and Mademoiselle up.

His eyes brightening at the thought of a real French mademeoiselle, the man took the card held out to him, and promised that at the first possible opportunity he would indeed come visiting!

Madge sat back in against the cushions, with a sigh of relief. Their very first customer! And finally she could allow herself to relax. Perhaps this crazy venture might prove not to be so crazy after all.

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 29/04

They went to their hotel, a quiet one, not far from the Madeleine and, having arranged to stay for the remainder of the week, were shown to their rooms. All three bathed and changed and then Jo and Grizel were sent to bed. They were fast asleep at nine o’clock, and as the room gradually began to resound to a rather melodic duet of snores – Joey’s of course featuring the golden notes of a chorister, with Grizel’s accompaniment a rather gruffer alto – Madge gave a sigh of relief. The dose she had slipped them in their evening milk looked as if it had taken hold and she knew she was safe for a good few hours. Rapidly she changed into the one smart little black dress she possessed, and having adjusted her outfit, with the small deft touches that bore the marks of a Frenchwoman, she rapidly applied make up taken from a hidden compartment in her case. A quick glance in the mirror told her that she was looking damm hot, and swinging her coat over her shoulders she set off to hail a taxi.

In the taxi she took out the folded piece of paper that Mademoiselle had given her before she left for Austria. “Ma fillle. I think it might be worth your while to go and look at this. I have given you a note of introduction – I still have some good friends there and they will, I am sure, make you welcome.”

Madge had clasped her hand in gratitude and now was on her way to the world famous Folies Bergere.

The taxi driver would have dropped her at the front, but she directed him backstage. He looked a little doubtful until he caught a flash of the well appointed legs peeping out from under Madge’s best dress and then he shrugged. She might be lucky he thought, and then as she got out of the taxi and bent down to pay the bill, the eye watering cleavage on display made him wonder if, perhaps it might be possible to afford a ticket to a show in the near future!

Madge gave the taxi driver one of her well bred smiles of dismissal, and made her way to the stage door, the precious letter clutched firmly in one hand.

The porter was inclined to be a bit dismissive, but condescended to read the letter. As he looked at the signature his eyebrows shot through the roof and hastily handing it back to Madge, stammered “but yes, Madame! Come this way!” and he led the way to the office where the owner of the Theatre was sitting behind a huge desk.

“Monsieur Derval!” he stuttered “ Madame has with her a letter of introduction from . from.. La Therese!”

And Paul Derval, owner and manager of The Folies Bergere, who had been frowning at the interruption, stood up smiling and, moving gracefully towards Madge, took the hand held out to him. Gracefully bowing over it, he kissed it vigorously and exclaimed “Mon Dieu! La Therese! How is she! We have missed her sorely here..”

“She is well, Monsieur, but I think she still pines for the old days.”

“I do not wonder at that!” he cried “La Therese was the most famous woman in all Paris! Crowned heads of Europe came to see what she could do with a fruit salad!”

And as Madge recalled some of the things Therese had explained about her own particular speciality, she blushed prettily.

What else do you think Therese could do with assorted elements of fruit and several assorted containers of whipped cream? But thank you for the kind comments –This is such fun to write!

Monsieur Derval graciously allowed Madge to watch the evening’s performance from the wings. It was certainly an experience thought Madge, a little flushed as the smaller than average toga, indifferently wrapped round the waist of Zeus, slipped slightly, allowing a glimpse of the reason this particular dancer had been cast in the role of a Greek god. The costumes were amazing though and Madge and the mainly male audience were at one in appreciating them, although possibly for slightly different reasons. At the end of the performance, Madge gratefully accepted Paul Derval’s offer of a glass of chilled champagne in his office.

She leaned back slightly against the back of the well padded chaise longue and sipped the ice cold wine appreciatively. Paul Derval came to sit next to her and asked curiously why La Therese had sent her to them. Madge cheerfully explained her plans and added that Therese had thought she might get a few ideas. She certainly had she thought, but it remained to be seen how practical they might be. Perhaps some sort of costume? Layers of gauze possibly? She turned over the various ideas in her head as she sipped at the potent golden liquid.

“Perhaps Mademoiselle, you might wish to start your new career a little earlier than you had anticipated?” the husky voice of Paul Derval interrupted her musing. Madge looked up at that – taken by surprise – and then directly at him.

“Oh my!” she thought – and then gulped – she sincerely hoped some of that was padding.”

…….

Madge tucked the two hundred francs into her small evening bag and said her farewells to Paul Derval, who was still lying on the chaise longue with a rather fatuous grin on his face, and silently making plans to visit the Austrian Tyrol as soon as possible.

……

Madge let herself into the hotel room cautiously and listened carefully for a moment. Then, as the duet of snores continued, she moved quickly to the bathroom. Years of practice meant that the removal of the cosmetics was accomplished rapidly and fresh faced once more, the make up carefully restored to its hiding place, Madge slipped into the waiting bed, and rapidly slipped into well deserved slumber.

……

After such an early night it was hardly to be expected that Grizel and Joey – always renowned as an early riser anyway – should sleep late and so Madge was woken from her slumbers considerably earlier than she would have liked. “Eh Puis!” she thought resignedly and making a hasty toilet she quickly began to dress.

“Madge!” cried Joey, a note of horror in her voice and Madge looked up quickly “What is it Joey baba? Do you feel ill?” she questioned anxiously.

Joey seemed incapable of speech and pointed, with wide opened eyes at Madge’s neck. Madge rushed to the mirror to try and discover what had engendered such a reaction in her sister and to her horror discovered a bright red rash on the side of her neck.

Madge froze temporarily, but said nothing as she carefully examined the rash. She remembered very well indeed how that particular mark had been made. Oh yes indeedy!! She turned to Joey and smiled reassuringly “Its nothing Baba. Just a reaction to all the stresses of selling up and moving to start a whole new life in a new country. I’ll put some cream on it and it will be fine in a few days..”

Grizel accepted the explanation without a second thought but Joey still looked unconvinced. Madge – who had always included Joey in family discussions, something which in some respects had made her older than her years, - realised that sooner rather than later she was going to have to talk to Miss Joey. But not now.

“Right girls. We have a lot to do today. We will visit the Madeleine as we are so close, then go to the Champs Elysees, have dejeneur and then….”

“Then it’s the Opera!” interrupted Joey. “what a thrill that will be!” and in the excitement of looking forward to the evenings performance of la Boheme, forgot her suspicions. Madge breathed a sigh of relief and hurried to carry out the exciting – and hopefully distracting - programme.

The next few days were also jam packed with sightseeing, including a trip to Versailles, where even the unsentimental Grizel was affected by the ghostly atmosphere. Thus with no time to pause for thought and as Madge took care to cover the telltale mark with some secretly applied foundation, the whole incident was passed over.

*****

The train journey from Paris to Innsbruck was a long one, and it was with considerable relief that the party encountered Dick who had come to meet them. After a night in the Europe hotel, and a brief trip round the highlights of Innsbruck, they travelled up to Briesau , to see the Chalet that was to become the new school. The tears of joy on seeing Joey and Madge from Frau Pfeifen, and the warm French greeting from Mademoiselle provided the final touch and Madge felt as if she had come home at last.

*******

The Chalet had been cleverly segmented to provide sleeping accommodation for students and mistresses alike, and one room, which opened off from the main room in the Chalet, and had its own private access to the outside, had been declared sacred to Madame and Mademoiselle. This was to be their own private domain, their escape from children, and it was off-limits to all – Joey included, much to her widely vocalised disgust.

As she surveyed her new domain, Madge was suddenly assailed by doubts. “Oh Dick!” she said suddenly “Suppose it isn’t a success! Supposing I fail!”

Dick looked his sister over carefully, for once not with the candid eye of a brother, but assessingly, as a man would regard an attractive woman. “Tosh!” he exclaimed after a suitable pause. “You won’t fail! You’ve too much grit for that! I know I might have had my doubts at first” and he paused as they both remembered the dramatic way he had measured his length when Madge had first made the suggestion of moving to the Tyrol and her plans for making a living– “But you are young – that always helps – and to be honest you’ve got a dashed good figure. I shouldn’t wonder if it wasn’t a rip roaring success.”

Madge was comforted by his support and they said no more on the subject.

Dick’s furlough was soon up – and he returned more than willingly to his colonial existence in India. He had never previously held any real affection for a country which was alternately boiling hot and intensely muggy or lashing down with treacle thick veils of rain, not to mention invested by deadly snakes and man eating tigers, but somehow, after the events of the past few weeks, it had come to seem more and more attractive to him. Despite his reassuring words to his sister, he still wasn’t convinced of the wisdom of her career choice – and man like, rather than argue - silently decided that it would be a good few years before he found himself able to take another visit to Austria.

Just a short piece today...

The next few weeks were very busy ones. Grizel, Joey and Simone – Mademoiselle’s niece – had begged so hard to help with the distempering that Madge had not had the heart to forbid them, especially as Simone now appeared to be coming out of her shell. She had noted how miserable the little dark French girls had looked and had tackled Joey on the subject. Joey had vehemently denied that either she or Grizel had been guilty of any sort of meanness at all, but had promised Madge that she would try and do something to make her look a little less like a wet dish rag in need of a good wringing out to quoth her small sister. Madge had said no more and whatever Joey had said or done appeared to have turned the trick and Simone was increasingly coming out of her shell. The only down side appeared to be that she was never more than a few inches away from Joey, complete with an expression of dog-like devotion and Madge knew that Joey was one of the most unsentimental of beings, and had never been one to appreciate such evident adoration. “Ah well.” she could only leave it to Joey and trust that her sister not to upset Simone too much.

This keenness to splosh liberal amounts of distemper on the walls meant that Madge and Therese managed to get on rather faster with the project of redecorating their “special” room than either woman had anticipated. There had been a bad moment when the pots of paint had got mixed up, leading to Grizel exclaiming disgustedly that some sort of dreadful mix up had occurred. The shop had accidentally sent dark red and gold paint by mistake. Madge told her she would send it back, and quietly removed it into their room.

Madge had been more than a little doubtful about the colour scheme Therese had proposed – being something of a magnolia woman herself. Still she had to admit it all looked very imposing. What she hadn’t realised was that this was only to be the backdrop. Therese had other ideas for the finishing touches. And this vision was why Madge now found herself standing on a papier mached replica of large open shell, stark naked apart from some artistically arranged gauze, (her mop of curly dark brown hair came nowhere close to giving even a passing nod to modesty) with a fatuous smile on her face, whilst Therese, brush in hand, faithfully replicated the image on one long wall….

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 08/05

By degrees they settled down in the Chalet and by dint of much hard work and vast vats of beeswax, the School was eventually ready for the grand opening. There was very little in the way of furnishings at the moment – Madge was hoping that as the business – well both of them – took off, that she would be able to add more. What there was was of good quality – in particular in Madge and Therese’s sacred sitting room (within the walls of which in actual fact very little sitting was due to take place). The furniture for that room had been delivered at dead of night as no one had wanted to take the risk of the girls seeing the well padded, extra large chaise longue (Madge had developed something of a fondness for that particular item of furniture since her Paris days), complete with accessories being delivered. There had been enough trouble when the canes had arrived, Joey shocked that her sister could even be considering corporal punishment in her schools. Madge had explained that she didn’t actually plan on using them on her pupils, but thought there presence might act as a deterrent to anyone considering really outrageous behaviour. She fixed a meaning eye on her sister at that point, and Joey blushed as she recalled some of her more adventurous past exploits and said no more. It was such a fag being ill all the time, that on the odd occasion when she did feel completely up to the mark, she tended to over compensate. With a sigh of relief at having changed the subject, without actually having to resort to an untruth, Madge sent Joey off to find the others.

******

At last the first day of school arrived and Joey, who in tandem with Grizel and Simone had gone to meet the Chalet School’s very first pupils, was astonished to see far more girls than they had expected. She wondered how her sister would take the unexpected news.

*******

Madge greeted them all with her gentle smile and a rather charming blush. She accepted graciously the explanation for the extra girls and mentally calculated how much extra a year she would be getting. The School was doing well so far – but what about the other side of the business?

*******

Madge had taken the first opportunity that presented itself to go to the Kronz Prinz Karl to lay the whole story in front of Herr Braun. At first he was astonished that’such a gnadige English lady as herself should be considering such a move, but as she explained her ideas, he began to realise the very significant benefits that it might offer. In truth there were indeed a number of very nice single gentleman – alpinists for the main part – who often found themselves at a loose end in the evenings. And there was very little in the way of female companionship to offer them. It was all very well having a quick tumble amongst the sheets with one of the maids, but as most spoke very little English, such a union satisfied only one of the senses. But Madge intended to base her services on the Geisha system – a male guest would be offered tea and conversation, music and a meeting of the minds, and only then would any other needs be met.

She blushed charmingly when Herr Braun asked if she had had much experience – and merely murmured something about being able to send for suitably glowing references should they be required.

Herr Braun looked thoughtful for a long moment “and just what do I get out of the deal” he asked finally? And Madge knew she had hooked him. After that, it was just a question of settling the finer details. They haggled amicably and finally settled on 20%. Madge knew that the percentage was quite high, but as Herr Braun also offered to keep a somewhat paternal eye on the venture – discouraging any less than gentlemanly callers – as well as keeping a weather eye on the school itself – that she felt she was getting the better part of the deal and closed with the offer without further ado.

They shook hands and Madge slowly made her way back to the Chalet School, confident that she had made the first real steps in establishing Briesau’s Best Bordelo Inc. In addition to the satisfaction it would be to establish her independence and build up her bank balance to ensure Joey’s future, there was a deep sense of satisfaction in knowing that she could contribute to the local economy. The Tyroleans were a fiercely proud race, but Madge knew that times were often extremely hard for the local people around the lake. Soon they would be able to send their daughters to Madge and Therese to be trained – and there would be an end to hardship and want. It was a good feeling thought Madge, as her mind wandered a few years into the future.

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 13/05

Within a very few days of the Chalet School opening, it became clear that expansion was on the cards – and sooner rather than later. Whilst Madge and Therese had so far managed to split their various duties between them with ease – they were after all very exclusive as a matter of policy, so there were not too many gentleman callers to pass off as parents of potential pupils. But an influx of new pupils, allied to an increase in the number of well loaded tourists, was making life increasingly awkward.

As a short term measure Herr Braun had reserved a room for their exclusive use at the hotel – and Madge would often nip over for an hour or so, using the “I just need to consult with Herr Braun and ask his advise about……” line. But it was clear that this was not a viable long term option. Joey for one, was becoming increasingly sceptical – at home Madge had been the absolute authority- she had ruled their Guardian and Dick absolutely – indeed Joey sometimes found herself wondering if this was why Dick had chosen a job that took him so far away from his only family. But then she would give herself a mental shake, chiding herself for such an uncharitable thought. Any way, it was getting away from the point, which was that until they had come to the Tyrol, Madge would rather have been boiled in oil, than ask advice from a man. This left two options – either Madge had decided that she had to conform to this society’s social norms with regard to the proper role for a woman – or she was up to something. Joey was reserving judgement – for now at least.

Miss Maynard – English, young, attractive, flexible and cheap – came as the answer to Madge’s prayer and after a carefully worded interview had made it clear that she was game for anything, she was employed as the third mistress at the Chalet School – and Madge – apart from the odd twinge of jealousy when a visitor specifically requested the athletic one – counted her blessings and allowed herself to devote a bit more time to the School.

*******

The girls had been making friends and in tandem with the parents of the first few pupils, had been exploring the district. On one of these trips Grizel had caught sight of the mighty Tiernjoch and had conceived a violent fancy to try to climb it – a desire than was not quenched by Herr Mensch’s patronising explanation that such a climb would be far beyond the capabilities of a mere girl.

******

A craze for school stories has swept the Chalet School, a result of the Tirolean pupils becoming exceedingly anxious to become as much like a real English school as possible. One of the results of this craze was a desire to celebrate Madge’s birthday. Permission given, a group of girls made their way to Innsbruck in order to buy a birthday present from the School who already adored their young headmistress.

It was on their return from that eventful trip – which basically involved first Joey and then Grizel doing their best to provoke an international incident with and extremely fat and unpleasant Berliner - that Madge met them with the news that they were to have a new pupil. Before she could finish, Grizel – who had been much taken by the girl in the brief meeting they had had with her and had been heard to lament that she wasn’t a pupil at the school - had burst out with “Oh do say its Juliet Carrick!” and Madge, much surprised that that any of the girls had come across her, agreed that it was the case.

Herr Mensch looked troubled – Captain Carrick and his wife had only been staying at the Tyroler Hof for a short time, but already there were rumours that something was not qite right about them. He tried to put some of this hesitancy into his voice and Madge herself was very uneasy as she tried to explain why she had agreed to take the girl.
“They were so anxious, and well – somehow he persuaded me. And they have paid a term’s fees of course..”

And Herr Mensch left it that, but determined to speak with Madge later on the subject.

And Madge was left alone to reflect - bitterly – on just how she had been persuaded to take on her latest pupil…

Sorry - toothache over the bank holiday weekend with an emergency trip to the dentist on Tuesday - 2 hours of root canal work... but if JS is missing it......

Madge pursed her lips in remembrance of the scene. She contained her anger with an effort. The girls must not see how cross she was. Joey for one would be bound to see it and take it out on Juliet, and that danger Madge felt she must avert at all costs.

But that evening, she told Therese all about it.

Marie had shown Captain Carrick into sitting room that Madge and Therese used for their more public interviews. She had been seated at the large comfortable desk that was one of their more recent purchases. An antique that Madge had managed to pick up for a song, thanks to a tip off from a very grateful client. She smiled politely and rose to shake hands with the tall man with the soldierly bearing. He glided towards her and Madge instinctively stiffened. In recent weeks her instincts about men had sharpened – a useful skill for someone in her profession – both of them in fact – and she distrusted this man, and had moreover, taken a sudden and very violent dislike to him.

She knew better than to show any signs of her feelings, however, and managed to turn the offer of a handshake into a general wave in the direction of the chair which faced the desk. From the somewhat knowing smirk on his face, though, Madge was fairly sure he had not missed her reluctance to have any form of physical contact with him and she now went on full alert.

He oiled to begin with. Phrases such as “wonderful school” “fantastic teaching” tripped off his tongue, but when Madge made no encouraging signs, the expression darkened. Into the conversation he began to indicate that there were certain rumours – oh obviously without foundation – that there was something not quite right about the Chalet School. That there might be something else going on – shall we say behind closed doors? that if the parents of existing pupils got to hear about in this oh so Catholic country might well scupper her chances of establishing her school? But naturally if Madge was prepared to take on his daughter Juliet he would do his very best to quell such distressing reports.

As she glowered at him, he relented enough to offer her a term’s fees – and after that – well perhaps they would both be in a better place to negotiate?

Madge fumed – she didn’t really have a leg to stand on, particularly after Captain Carrick shamelessly admitted he had been spying on the school and had managed to take several rather interesting photographs of Madge in a diaphanous rose robe bidding farewell to several different men, at that very convenient external chalet door, and Juliet thus became a member of the Chalet School.

*******

That night Madge slipped away to the Hotel Kronz Prinz Karl and laid her troubles before Herr Braun.

He too was angry at the threat to his extremely profitable sideline and thought hard for a moment.

“Don’t worry.” He finally asserted. “I’ll think of something. It’s a shame we aren’t in Italy as I have a number of contacts there who should be able to solve the problem of Captain Carrick – permanently.”

And Madge sighed for the lost opportunity.

Frau Berlin – founding owner of the Europe-wide chain “Berlin’s Biggest Breasts Bounce Buoyantly for Big Boys – affectionately known as the Beebs – was very hot and very cross. Just wait until she got hold of the idiot that had advised her that she needed to be swathed in tweeds and a stout alpine walking costume if she was to succeed in blending into the background in the Austrian Tyrol. It was boiling hot for goodness sake, not a breeze anywhere – and instead of a nice comfy expansive silk frock, she was corseted to within an inch of her life, and about to be smothered in fabric that quite frankly should have remained on the verdammed ovine! And if that wasn’t enough to drive any sane woman completely round the bend, she had been completely unable to find a hint of the location of this new “love agency” (Frau Berlin always said she liked to describe her business as one which promoted the ideal of love between the two sexes – even if it were only for an hour or two at a time.) – and if she couldn’t track it down, she couldn’t send the boys round to advise the blasted newcomer that she – Frau Berlin – held the rights to the whole of Northern Europe and ensure she – whoever she might be - ceased and desisted operations immediately.

It was enough to make any one scowl. Still there was always some comfort to be found in coffee and cakes, and this particular coffee shop had come highly recommended. Several luscious cream cakes, and two cups of strong coffee later, she was starting to feel a little better. That mood of contentment lasted only a brief while however, as she caught sight of two disgusting little girls sitting at a table close by, and her face darkened as she listened to the comments they obviously thought she could neither hear nor understand.

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 01/06

Sorry for the long gap....

Frau Berlin stretched her ears as far as possible but could only make out the odd phrase here and there. These blasted Englanders! They spoke so quickly! But she clearly heard the words “looks like a scarlet hippopotamus” and “If I was as fat as that I would go and drown myself” and Frau Berlin spluttered with indignation! Her! Fat! What rubbish was this! Could this small, deluded (and very rude) child not understand that she was merely voluptuous? Her more than adequate curves had provided comfort for countless men! Indeed crowned heads of Europe had found a welcoming pillow in those ample bosoms.

Although having said that, Royal patronage was not always an unmixed blessing Frau Berlin mused reflectively, her mind for a moment distracted from the annoyance on the next table – for some reason Europe’s royal family thought that the thrill of conquering a crown was compensation enough for a working woman – but she supposed it was always good to be able to put “By Royal appointment” on the advertising . And of course sometimes it was well worth forgoing any additional compensation – she remembered one particular Archduke – oh a number of years ago now - with a great deal of fondness. What that man could do with his orb! And she heaved a sigh of sadness that those days were long gone…

But the brief wander through the garden of pleasant memories, was short lived. She looked up suddenly as the verdammt child said something else. That was it! This was insupportable! If the child’s parents would not chastise her, then she must do so. She stood, but in her furious efforts to conjure that most pithy of phrases, she most unfortunately dribbled slightly and she spat out rather more than the words of condemnation she had been practising. Equally unfortunately a waiter happened to be passing by, with a full tray of piping hot soup, just as she made her ejaculation. Now had he been properly trained German waiter, the man would not have been so unprofessional as to react to the impact of a mouthful of Prussian saliva by unsuccessfully twisting his body in a forlorn attempt to avoid the same. However, he was only an Austrian waiter – and a very new one at that and he did. The tray dipped, the bowls for one slow suspended moment remained on the tray, albeit at an angle that defied belief, and then the inevitable happened.

The mess was indescribable. The uproar immense. The manager appeared on the scene demanding to know what was going on.

Frau Berlin complained loudly and vigourously about the waiter’s incompetence and the rudeness of the English and stomped out, her face as black as an Irish thundercloud. The manager accepted a reassuring explanation from Herr Marani – his decision aided by the rather large backhander he was given – and the poor waiter was left to clear up the mess, whilst his party complained about their lack of soup.

It could have been worse, thought Frau Berlin reflectively. At least she had not had to pay for her little snack. She wished she had been able to give that brat a piece of her mind, but had no intention of going back to the restaurant to do so. It was a shame she had lost the chance though. And something else was niggling at the back of her mind. That man who had been with that gaggle of children. He looked vaguely familiar. Now just where had she seen him before? The memory teased at her, and she resolutely put it to one side. It would come back to her in time. She had an excellent memory – she needed to in her line of work – no good forgetting which client liked to experiment with a tin of polish and a feather duster – and one who – well didn’t….

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 17/7

Herr Marani was a worried man. A very worried man. In fact he was schreckensstarr. What in the name of all that is Holy was Bertha Berlin doing here! Last he had heard, she had semi retired, and was busy stuck behind a desk, running the Bureau with typical Prussian efficiency. But she didn’t seem to have recognised him – otherwise she would surely have said something? Perhaps after all he was safe from discovery?

And with that realisation the panic that had seized him eased, and he began to relax. He was worrying for no good reason at all! After all – it was not likely that they would run into the lady again! He wiped his sweat streaked brow with his handkerchief, and left the restaurant to join his family and the rest of their party, slightly ashamed of his panic, and by now silently chuckling to himself for being so scared for no good reason.

******

With Madge’s birthday presents chosen, wrapped and waiting to be called for on their return, the party left on their excursion to the mountains.

Grizel expressed a desire to climb the mighty Tiernjoch to her kindly host as the party stood and gazed at the magnificent vista before them. He scoffed at that, telling her rather patronisingly that it was no good for a child – and a mere female child at that – to have such a dream. Such feats of daring adventure were best left for men – their womenfolk should be content to stay at home embroidering slippers – and listening with awed admiration to their men folk’s adventures. Grizel said nothing – but did it so significantly that Joey shot her a quick, alarmed glance and made haste to change the subject.

*******

They reached the small inn at the Alte Post where Herr Marani proposed to have kaffee und kuchen and entered – Joey trilling “I say! Wouldn’t it be funny if we ran into that horrible fat woman again!”

Just for a moment, Herr Marani’s blood ran cold. Then he shook himself and managed to say urbanely that it was extremely unlikely – but if they did, he hoped they would be able to remember their manners.

It is hard to say who was more stupefied when they pushed open the door of the speissaal to find Frau Berlin eating bread and drinking her coffee. She took one look at them and nearly choked on her bread in her rage. Herr Marani went as white as the snow that usually covered the mountain tops and the girls exclaimed in dismay.

Frau Berlin stood, drawing herself up to her full height – and exclaimed fiercely that she would not eat with English Pig Dogs! Grizel’s temper, already ignited by Herr Marani’s earlier laughing dismissal of her ability to climb the Tiernjoch, leapt into life and before Joey – who had accurately read her friend’s state of mind – could intervene, had exclaimed “Well we don’t want to eat with you either!”

There was a stupefied silence for a moment – then a sudden change of expression occurred in Frau Berlin’s face and she began to speak. Herr Marani hustled the girls out of the room, telling them to wait for him outside, and smartly closed the door behind them. Then he turned back to face the women in front of him, well aware that the game was up. She was no longer consumed with anger, but instead there was a slightly unpleasant smile on her lips and she repeated the phrase into the now silent room…

“Well well well…. If it isn’t Flopsy Florian!”

And Herr Marani’s heart sank.

It really is quite restful to come back to this after Rosalie! Thank you everyone....

It had all been such a long time ago! Herr Marani thought rebelliously. “Was it fair that after all this time the one person who could blow his carefully constructed cover should turn up in the Tirol. No it wasn’t!” he thought bitterly – and cursed whoever it was that had set up the brothel that had forced Bertha to come out from behind the desk and track the owner down personally. Well he was in for it now. The price for her silence was his help in finding the new operation – and if necessary helping persuade the owner that it was in their best interests health-wise to close down, sharpish.

Still very grumpy about the whole affair, Herr Marani called his little party back into the Inn, where he had arranged for food to be brought into a little room just off the spesiaal.

“Papa. Why did that lady call you Flopsy?” queried Gisela curiously.

Herr Marani choked on the small twist of bread that he had just put into his mouth. The action, although somewhat painful, nonetheless gave him a few valuable minutes thinking space, and when the last of the tears had fallen and the agonising spasms had ceased, he managed to control his voice and say with admirable calmness “Na Na! my child. Thou misheard. The lady said Flippers and Flowers – a particularly vulgar expression that I wish you to forget immediately.”

Gisela looked a little confused, but as she – as all Tirolean girls – had been brought up to habits of unquestioning obedience – nodded her head meekly and replied “yes papa”.

Expelling a silent, but heartfelt sigh of relief, Herr Marani firmly changed the subject.

********
Florian Marani had been a very young and naive seventeen year old in search of adventure when he left his beloved native Tirol for the fleshpots of Berlin. Unfortunately the job he had been offered there fell through and faced with no money and reluctant to return home with his tail between his legs, he had – reluctantly - accepted an “interview” at Bertha’s House of Ill Repute (it had not at that time adopted the current catchy rebranded tagline). The initial stages of his new employment had gone well. He was at that time a fine figure of manhood, and his charming good looks had caused more than one heart in the House to flutter. However, the life of ease and luxury did not last long. He had been there for a week being trained, and then came the time for his final “interview” with the lady herself. She stood before him and slowly began to remove her corsets. As the heavily overburdened whale bone creaked and popped, more and more mounds of flesh were exposed to his increasingly horrified gaze. At last she stood before him in her very full glory and suddenly, without warning – she pounced.

Florian’s limited interest in discovering the delights of Frau Berlin’s body withered to nothing – and unfortunately his interest was not the only thing. The memory of her scornful face laughing at him as he excited the room, clutching his clothes to conceal his loss of pride, had haunted him for years. That it had not caused him any lasting damage was attributed to one of Bertha’s young ladies who had decided to leave the House with him. With some loving attention, some special embrocation oil and a few tricks learned from some of the other girls, Gisel had restored him to his former glory. In gratitude he had married her, and together they returned to the Tirol where no-one knew their secret, and they soon established themselves as the epitome of respectability.

Herr Marani could see that carefully constructed life tottering, and cursed.

Sorry I didn't get this posted yesterday - small son not very well....

In addition to Madge’s birthday presents, the small party was also in possession of a note for her, which Captain Carrick had asked Joey to deliver on his behalf. He had exclaimed at the delightful and fortuitous coincidence of their meeting, but Joey wasn’t so sure. She pursed her lips and made sure the little group went back to the School as fast as their legs could carry them. Miss Joey had a strong feeling that all was not right.

That Joey’s intuition was to be relied upon was revealed when Miss Bettany opened the note. Her initial exclamation on reading the contents was quickly changed into the more innocuous “Oh dear me! Whatever is to be done!” She though swiftly for a moment, then made her decision.

“Excuse me everyone. I need to talk to a man!” and off Madge strode, oblivious to the scene she left behind.

Firstly there was a quietly sobbing Juliet who had fallen into the long grass as soon as she had heard Joey’s explanation of the note. As it happens this was a fortunate circumstance, as it meant she was hidden from Joey who was by this stage convinced not only was there was something terribly wrong, but that whatever it was, it was all Juliet’s fault. Just wait till she got her hands on her! Muttering under her breath, Joey nonetheless allowed herself to be towed back to the Chalet.

But all this was as nothing to the stricken look of Herr Marani who pitifully called after Madge as she strode off in the direction of the Kronz Priz Karl – “But Fraulein Bettany! I’m a man! I’m a man too! ”

But Madge – angrier than she had ever been in her life before - did not hear him and continued her rapid pace until she had burst into the office where Herr Braun jumped, the collection of postcards he had been studying flying all over the floor.

Madge paid no attention to his expression of dismay and merely thrust into his hand Captain Carrick’s note. “Here. Read this!”

One eye on the postcards, Herr Braun nonetheless obediently did as he was told. As his eyes slowly scanned the letter, his expression darkened and he began to swear, profusely and profanely. He apologised when he realised Madge could understand him, but she simply waved them away.

“So Captain Carrick has abandoned his daughter and is confident that you will not make any fuss because otherwise he may make certain information about your extra-curricular activities available to parents of your pupils. Furthermore he suggests that you train Juliet up to be useful – in what ever part of your business you feel you can profit most from..” and as he read that, Herr Braun once again lapsed into some distinctly non-standard German.

“Yes, yes, yes… I know all that” cut in Madge impatiently “But what are we going to do about it?! We can’t have him wandering all round Europe, threatening to blow the whistle on our operation whenever he feels like it! We’ll be ruined!” She began to pace restlessly, whilst in stark contrast Herr Braun suddenly stilled.

After a moment’s thought he nodded his head decisively “Don’t worry Miss Bettany. I think its more than time I called in a few favours. I don’t think he will be a cause for concern for much longer.”

Madge stopped her pacing and looked at Herr Braun directly, then as she read what was written in his face, nodded her head. “So be it.” She said and bowed her head….

*******

“But what about the girl?” asked Herr Braun

“I’ll keep Juliet, naturally. Luckily both parts of the business are doing quite well at the moment so we can afford to keep her on at school without resorting to her father’s suggestion! Then we’ll let her decide later what she wants to do.” Madge replied matter of factly. “But I’m going to have to talk to Joey, otherwise I think there is going to be trouble.”

Their business concluded satisfactorily, Madge gathered her wrap and got up to go. Herr Braun saw her politely to the door and went to kiss her hand.

As she graciously accepted the salutation, Madge indicated the closest postcard “Oh by the way Herr Braun, whilst that might be technically possible – I can assure you it would also be extremely uncomfortable.” She smiled sweetly, leaving Herr Braun red and with a mouth flapping uselessly to and fro….

Just a mini post today - sorry for the delay - 6th birthday party (twice!) and two (different) dinosaur cakes. Apparently they were nearly as good as the one's in Tesco!

Her little problem with the Carrick’s well on the way to being settled, Madge returned once more to the Chalet School and frowned when she saw her little sister still waiting for her.

“Joey! You should have been in bed hours ago!” she exclaimed, worry about the effects of the cool night air on Joey’s still fragile state of health making her tone rather sharper than might otherwise have been the case.

Joey flushed but stood her ground. “I know Madge and I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t go to sleep without knowing what was going on!”

Madge looked a bit more closely at her young sister and saw the tell tale signs of feverish excitement and knew that it would be worse than useless to send the child to bed in that state. She sighed ruefully. It had been a very long day!

“You’ve never shut me out before Madge!” continued Joey plaintively and then added simply and in a more subdued tone “It’s just if it affects you – it affects me.”

“I know Ba-ba!” and Madge thought for a moment. It looked as thought the time for that long delayed talk had come – maybe she would kill two birds with one stone. “I know you can be trusted Joey, and I promise you I will tell you everything. But not tonight. Now come with me and I’ll tuck you up. And stay with you until you are asleep.”

Her face had fallen slightly at this pronouncement but Joey well knew once her sister had made up her mind to something, nothing would move her. She sighed, but obediently followed Madge back into the Chalet. At least she would have Madge tuck her up, and that was an unexpected treat.

Madge stopped abruptly as a sudden thought struck her. “Joey – where did Herr Marani go?”

“He left shortly after you went to Herr Braun’s and said something about needing to get home to have his ego stroked – at least “ continued Joey a bit more doubtfully “ I think it was ego he said”

Just an tiny post today....

Joey woke early next morning, a trick of hers, and as she lay quietly in bed her mind wandered back over the events of the night before. She wondered again what had happened with Juliet – and what had brought that worried look to Madge’s face. Her face hardened and she decided fiercely that if that nasty Captain Carrick had upset Madge in some way then she would jolly well take it out on Juliet.

It was perhaps well for the success of the remainder of the day – and indeed Juliet’s future life at the Chalet School - that Joey’s revengeful impulses were checked by the arrival of the former. Madge spoke to her in low tones as soon as she saw Joey was – as she had expected – already wide awake, and bade her come and join her as soon as she was dressed.

Joyfully, for to spend time with her beloved sister was a treat that had been sadly lacking since they relocated to the Tyrol. Joey hastened to oblige and by the time Madge returned to her room, her small sister had stripped her bed, the plumeaux hanging over the window to air. Madge said nothing for they were not a demonstrative family as a rule, but she understood the message Joey was trying to covey. “Here catch!” was all she vouchsafed, however, throwing a large slab of cake at Joey. “And be quiet! We don’t want the whole chalet woken up!”

Thrilled, Joey quelled her delight, and sedately followed her sister out of the Chalet and in to the early morning sunshine.

They walked in silence for a while – Joey just content to be with her sister, and Madge wondering about the best way to bring up the topic she was determined to discuss. Finally she took the plunge.

“Joey Baba – I owe you an apology.”

Joey stopped still. “But What!? On earth!” she cried, her surprise making her forget her sister’s injunction for the need for quiet!

Madge reminded her, and Joey’s volume control subsided immediately, even if her rampant curiosity did not.

Madge continued “Joey – I didn’t quite tell you all our plans when we discussed coming to live in the Tyrol. But I think it’s about time you knew – everything….”

*****

“It’s not really that big a deal Baba – but basically we didn’t just set up one business – the School – but two. The other part of the enterprise is a brothel – a very selective one – obviously.” And at this point Madge stopped, anxious to hear Joey’s reactions before she continued with her explanation….

Another little snippet....

For an instant Joey looked more than a little puzzled and then illumination came.

“Oh you mean the place where men go to get their itch scratched!” she exclaimed.

Now it was Madge’s turn to look confused. “Sorry Joey. I’m not quite following you.”

“Oh Madge!” said Joey reproachfully “You must remember! That time when that nice friend of Dick’s came home with him on furlough. He asked Dick if there was a brothel nearby because he had a bit of an itch that needed a scratch if Dick knew what he meant. You know the one with the poorly eye – it kept winking after he said things to Dick.”

Illumination dawned as Madge did indeed bring to mind the revolting little specimen of manhood to which Joey was referring. After having propositioned every female in the house, regardless of age, physical attractiveness, or indeed capability (their old retired Nanny had never been quite the same after his visit to the nursery) Madge had given the Hon Derek Smythe a straight choice of returning to town to await the next boat back to India, or to submit to some fairly drastic surgery. Muttering imprecations about dried up English spinsters who didn’t know when their luck was in, he settled for the former option and had departed forthwith.

Madge groaned inwardly. This looked as if it was going to be nearly as much hard work as the time a much younger Joey had asked an ancient governess where babies came from. Although the explanation had started off in the traditionally approved fashion, with birds and bees for illustrations, the governess had evidently become a tad involved and by the end had extended her examples to large numbers of the animal kingdom, leaving Joey more than a little confused. The whole thing had only come to light when her sister had had a severe and prolonged bout of hysterics when Madge had offered to take her to the zoo as a treat.

Madge Explains - part one.....

“Well in a way I suppose you are right, Baba. It’s just a different sort of itch….” Madge, took a deep breath, and explained.

“Do you remember me telling you about babies and how they are made?” at Joey’s nod, Madge continued “Well darling, sometimes making babies isn’t the only reason men and women do that sort of thing. Sometimes – it is just for the fun of it.”

Joey looked a little dubious – to be frank the entire process as detailed by Madge had not sounded as if it could be that much fun – sort of like a rather messy jigsaw puzzle without a picture to help fit the pieces together.

Madge ploughed on. “And sometimes, in order to have that sort of fun, men are prepared to pay quite a bit of money. Unfortunately, some people consider that to be wrong, and argue that it should only be performed in the context of the marriage bed.” She stopped there, wanting to see how much Joey had absorbed.

“But what do you think, Madge?” asked her small sister in a small voice.

“Honestly darling? I think it is total hypocrisy! When Guardie died, the only realistic options I had were to go to India with Dick, marry, or to try and find a job. But there was you to consider. I could have married Peter Talbot, but I didn’t love him, and would only have been marrying him to find someone to provide for you and me. And I did think about it Joey. But I wanted more than than bed and board, and endless coffee mornings and tennis parties! I want to be able to choose – and more than anything in the world I wanted you to be able to have that choice! The only difference I can see between marrying a man I don’t love and selling my body to men who are willing and able to pay me well for the privilege, is that I stand to make a great deal more money this way, and honey I’ve never lied to you and I don’t intend to start now – most of the time, I very much enjoy it!”.

“But what about the school? Wouldn’t that have been enough?” queried Joey uncertainly.

“It might have been” admitted Madge honestly. “But when I looked in to it, I quickly discovered that there is a very high rate of failure for schools in the Tyrol. Apparently there are also sorts of health and safety issues – near drownings in freezing lakes, falling off mountains and the like, although quite frankly I can’t see that sort of thing being very likely to happen! But if I invested everything we owned and it failed, then we would be worse off than before, so the brothel idea was insurance. Of course I don’t suppose I would ever have thought about it, had it not been for Mademoiselle. It has always been an ambition of hers – but she could never quite raise the capital to do it before. And she has been endless helpful with .. er.. some of the more technical issues involved.”

Joey absorbed this in silence for a moment and then a thought struck her “Madge! You could have gone to India if it hadn’t been for me – is this my fault?” and she looked stricken at the thought.

Madge thought carefully before replying. Joey deserved total honesty. “Well yes I could have gone to India – but Joey that would just have been the same idea. I would just have gone to India to keep house for Dick until he married and no longer needed me – and could you seriously imagine me playing second fiddle to Dick’s wife? – or I would have married some suitable chap. It was the same choice darling… and this is mine. I’m happy with it – for now – although obviously if a rich, handsome, professional man should suddenly turn up on our doorstep, and fall madly in love with me – I might reconsider!” and Madge laughed, knowing how wildly unlikely such a scenario was…….

Before I get too carried away with Rosalie Part Two! I thought I'd quite like to update this a bit more....

They walked on in silence, Joey carefully thinking over everything that Madge had said.

Then she stopped suddenly as a thought struck her – “So will I join the family business when I’m older?” she asked.

Madge hastened to disabuse her of that thought “No darling!” she instinctively replied and then, having considered the matter in a bit more depth, added – well I suppose to be fair – I should say not unless you want to, or decide that you have a particular talent for it. But we haven’t really discussed exactly what it is you want to do with your life have we? Have you had any thoughts?”

“Well I had once thought I’d like to be a doctor. But Grizel explained that cos I was a girl, I could only be a nurse – and I don’t really fancy that too much – all those yucky bedpans Eucch! So I thought instead I might like to be a famous author, marry a doctor and have oodles of children – preferably all at once.”

Madge smiled to herself. Thus it had ever been when a child was asked what they wanted to be when they grew up – somehow they managed to think of the most unlikely things….

*****

Eventually Joey spoke again “RightHo! Madgeie Macree! You’ve been sister and mother to me ever since I can remember, and if you tell me that this is the right thing for us to do, well I say its topping! What can I do to help?”

And Madge – who hadn’t realized she had been holding her breath – let out a huge sigh – and ignoring the slang, gave her small sister a hug.

They continued their walk, Madge trying to find the right words to tell Joey about Juliet. In the end she just plunged in, telling the smaller girl that Juliet had been abandoned by her parents, and that Captain Carrick was blackmailing them into keeping her, by threatening to make Madge’s less conventional business activities a matter of public record.

“The Cad! The absolute Bounder!” exclaimed Joey in tones of total outrage.

“Exactly Baba…” agreed Madge, once more failing to call her young sister to order for unparliamentary language. “But darling, its not Juliet’s fault – indeed her father was so good as to suggest I might put her to work for me, to let her earn her keep. No – of course not Joey! We will take her in at the school, and try and sort something out for her – who knows when – or if – her father will ever return for her.” Madge was not prepared to share absolutely everything with her sister – whilst she had taken the whole brothel thing extremely well, Madge’s involvement – albeit on the periphery – in a contract killing, was probably just a bit more worldly knowledge than Joey was ready for at this stage in her school career.

“Madge” began Joey and then stopped, her bright little face puzzled.

“Well! What now?” queried Madge.

“I was just thinking, it seems to be such a horrible thing to do to your own child! Mother and Father wouldn’t have done it..”

“I should think not!” agreed Madge “And I’ve never heard of anyone else doing it either. Now don’t think about any of this any more than you can help Joey Baba. Just be good to Juliet, and if you should hear any rumours about any of this – squash them if you can.. Now tell me about yesterday..” and thus Madge turned the subject firmly into a different direction – at least she thought she had, being blissfully unaware that the main player in the little adventure Joey was about to narrate was from a rival love bureau out to close down her own small enterprise down in whatever way she could.

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 23/04

To make up for the length of time you've had to wait for this to start up again - and because I'm two posts ahead, I'm updating twice today!

It was clear that Juliet had no idea of the contents of her father’s letter and she was pathetically grateful for Madge’s kindness, ashamed of her past misdeeds, and determined to do her best to please her new guardian. Mademoiselle was not as sanguine as Madge but as it happened, the pair soon had other more pressing concerns to attend to.

********

“I’ve been hearing a few strange things about Herr Marani over the past few days.” Began Madge as she and Mademoiselle relaxed over the nectar that the sure touch of the nimble Frenchwoman’s fingers had made and which was therefore so far above the term coffee as to make the use of such a description totally inadequate.

“Its strange you should say this Ma Cherie, I too have noticed him acting in a most peculiar fashion. He is always to be found, either at the Kron Prinz Karl or at the School these days. I have heard he went straight up to the receptionist at the hotel the other day and asked if she happened to know of anywhere round here he could have a good time – if she knew what he meant. Well Helga has a good heart but she isn’t the brightest coal on the fire and she apparently told him that yes indeed, that everybody said it was splendid fun to go skating on the lake or skiing down the mountains, and if he liked she could get him fitted out with some special equipment. Apparently he brightened up at the last bit of the conversation and was later seen wandering into a little shack half way up the mountains with his trousers half way down his ankles. They say that Frau Schmidt still has nightmares.”

Madge sat up bolt upright in her chair at the conclusion of this story. “But Therese! Marie came to me this morning with the most peculiar tale – I thought there must be some mistake, but it sounds too much of a coincidence. Apparently Herr Marani had got his mother to make those luscious honey and nut cakes everyone loves so much and he went into the servants quarters with a batch of them. He asked Marie if there were any of the servants who could give him a good servicing – and Marie, grateful for the cakes, although concerned about the nervous twitch he had developed in one eye, said she thought she might be able to help – and sent him to the little shed at the back of the Chalet. It was quite dark in there – and it took him a few minutes to realize that the only other occupant was Brother Hans – who is 6 foot tall, and about the same wide. They say Herr Marani’s screams could be heard half way up the Alpe…”

“What on earth is he up to?” exclaimed Therese.

“I don’t know – but we need to be vilgilant – that’s for sure…”

*****

As perhaps may have been gathered from the above account, Flopsy Florian was not having a good week, and to crown it all, came the phone call he had been dreading.

“Well Flopsy? What have you managed to find out?” came the mocking but cold voice of Bold, Bad, Bertha down the telephone.

Herr Marani flinched, both at the volume, and the reference to his personal problem. “Nothing yet… But I have been making enquiries…”wobbled Herr Marani.

“Bah!” bawled the belligerent one – “I knew I should have done it myself! Well move over Floppy old Boy – Bertha’s coming to town!”

And with that the phone went dead.

Oh Ok then....

“Are you busy Madge?” enquired her little sister, putting her head round Madge’s office door.

“God I hope not! That would put the tin lid on it!” ejaculated her sister with somewhat surprising force, thought Joey, a tad perplexed, who had only wanted to know if now was a good time to talk to Madge.

Her sister had been working on the brothel accounts, which were looking extremely healthy. The problem was that the school was performing equally well, and Madge was finding that more and more of her time was taken up in its day to day running, leaving the bulk of the extra workload to be taken up by Mademoiselle. She had been complaining recently of a bad back, and with Madge only having time for a few of her regulars, to the loudly expressed disappointment of the not-so fortunate ones, it was becoming increasingly clear that something needed to be done – particularly with the tourist season not yet in full swing. But exactly what was to be done, remained unclear.

******

The rest of the first term at the Chalet School passed swiftly with the eighteen members currently making up the school, to be swelled by an additional 7 for next term.

Apparently the parents of the would-be pupils had not been put off by the fact that the entire school had been stuck on a mountain and forced to camp overnight with five lusty, herdsmen who hadn’t seen a woman in months. Naturally Madge, Miss Maynard and Mademoiselle had manfully paid for their night’s accommodation in the traditional manner – and as she settled back into the soft hay, Madge thought with a wince of satisfaction that she had seldom enjoyed a birthday more.

*****

Neither had the fact that Grizel and Joey had to be rescued from the edge of a precipice dampened parental enthusiasm for the new venture. But then Madge had made it clear that the school did emphasize outdoor activities, and plenty of fresh mountain air, and if one or two parents were a little undecided, the reflection that such an event was bound to be a one-off, afforded them sufficient reassurance to entrust their beloved child into the tender mercies of the Chalet School…

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 24/04

Thus it was with untroubled mind that Madge and Joey set off for the summer break – and almost miraculously it was several weeks before anything occurred to disturb the even tenor of their lives.

The first excitement concerned the arrival of a letter for Madge. On reading it she discovered that one of her clients – a Mr James Kettlewell – had become so enamored of her beauty and athletic ability, that he was proposing to make an honest woman of her. Although flattered by this evidence of her professional capabilities, she wasn’t tempted, and immediately resolved to write a tactful letter declining the offer – something along the lines of “so many men, so little time” should probably do the trick she thought. It would of course be a bit difficult to persuade even the most gullible person, that a man should propose to a woman he had met only once – on a train – so she swore Joey to secrecy about the proposal.

Soon afterwards Madge received word that the hit had been successful – both Carricks had their end in Rome – in an unfortunate car accident – according to the official police report, although for some reason that same report had failed to mention the bullets that had riddled the car, despite this fact suggesting a potential explanation of why Caprtain Carrick had swerved at that particular point in time.

Madge had to wait for Grizel and Juliet to join her before breaking the news to the older girl, which she managed to do discreetly thanks to Joey tactfully taking Grizel to one side. Juliet was a bit inclined to be weepy, despite the fact neither parent had had much time for her, but she was consoled by Madge’s promise to stand as her guardian. Luckily as well her father had won a fair bit of money just before he died, and this –with the few good bits of jewelry her mother had managed to hide from him and which now came to Juliet – meant that her future was secure.

****

And so came the time for the journey back to the Tyrol.

“Oh my only Aunt Sophonisba!” ejaculated Joey as they boarded the train that was to take them home. “Grizel Old Thing, you’ll never guess who is on the train with us!”

“Who?” exclaimed Grizel, jumping up to look out of the window, and craning her neck wildly in a very unladylike –as well as futile - attempt to see who Joey meant.

“Its Frau Berlin!” crowed Joey

“Never! Coo! I wonder what she’s up to?”queried Grizel, who had given up trying to locate Frau Berlin following a glare from her headmistress, and re-established herself on her seat in a much more respectable fashion

“Whatever it is, it is no concern of ours!” exclaimed Madge, shocked at this display of vulgar curiosity by one of her charges.

She was of course – entirely wrong…..

Well aware of Floppy Marani’s tendency to fail at the last moment, Bertha Berlin had not put all her eggs in that particular basket, and in addition to Herr Marani’s efforts had sent several of her own employees out and about to see what they could dig up. They appeared to have been more successful, at least she was here thanks to a report from one of these agents – who had apparently been analyzing the tourism figures throughout the Northern Tyrol area – and had thereby discovered an anomaly. In the past few months there had been an influx of single men choosing to stay in the Briesau area. Although not conclusive proof, the statistical variation was so marked, that Frau Berlin had thought it worthwhile to come and investigate on her own behalf. If this rival company was anywhere nearby – she would find it….

******

The train for Innsbruck pulled out of the station and all four inhabitants of the compartment settled down for the journey in their own individual ways. Whilst Joey and Grizel settled to a game of roadside cribbage, Juliet became lost in her own concerns and Madge contemplated the term ahead and the potentially profitable prospect of 26 pupils…. Then suddenly the train began to jerk violently, rocking from side to side and flinging the occupants of the carriage to the floor. With a final despairing shriek the train breathed its last, and collapsed into a mélange of melted iron.

There was a momentary silence as the four attempted to discover what the damage was. All four were alive, although shaken and in Juliet’s case very much bruised, but thanks to the typical English fetish for fresh air, their window was wide open. As the door – when Madge tried it – was found to be jammed, this was a good thing, as they had a ready means of egress.

“Good thing none of us is immensely fat” breathed Madge shakily as she hoisted the girls out of the small window one by one. Once assured of their safety, she herself scrambled out, and looked around to assess the situation. Although generally the rescue operation seemed to be well in hand, in the next door compartment Madge could see a woman, struggling desperately to free herself from the grip of the carriage window, and she ran to help. The cry of fire galvanized her into action, and with a mighty effort she pulled as hard as ever she could. Fortunately Bertha Berlin – for such indeed was the identity of the woman Madge, with exquisite irony, was rescuing – had more mobile flesh than muscled, which could thus be redistributed sufficiently to affect an exit. In fact she exploded through the window like a tinned steak and kidney pudding left to boil dry in a metal pan….

She was safe, intensely grateful to her rescuer, and nearly naked – whilst she had made it out, her clothes had not been as fortunate. She would have embraced Madge with some fervency but the strain had been too much for the English woman, and the world went black.

A passing guard, recognizing Bertha from an old postcard that was the jewel in his particular collection – a recognition aided perhaps by her current condition - was very keen to help her to lie down in a nearby hut. And Bertha – after finding out Madge’s name and address – suffered herself to be led away…..

*****

Madge came round to find herself lying on the ground with a strong tweed covered arm simultaneously managing to support her head as well as offering her something to drink from a small flask. She blenched at the smell of spirits and roused herself sufficiently to refuse the blend. She could tell the whisky had been watered, and nothing annoyed her more than the ruination of a good malt.

“My word that was the pluckiest thing I ever saw!” said a low, deep voice that appeared to belong to the arm. Despite his deplorable drinking habits, there was something extremely attractive about the voice, and Madge forced herself to open her eyes fully. She looked straight into eyes that were bluer than her beloved Tiernsee, and wondered briefly if she were concussed.

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 27/04

Just a little bit today...

They say that success has its price, and such was certainly proving to be the case for Madge Bettany as she faced the start of only her second term in charge of the Chalet School. The school roll had swollen to 33 pupils and to put it bluntly, space was increasingly at a premium. The sanctum sacred to Madge and Mademoiselle complete with its unusual wall adornments, looked like it would have to made into a general room for staff – and although Miss Maynard had proved so very accommodating over her duties, it seemed unlikely that many more women would fulfill such stringent employment conditions - that is to want to work in Austria, be an excellent teacher, and thirdly be keen to top up their annual salary in a rather more unorthodox fashion than running a hobbies club in their spare time. It rather looked as if it would soon not be possible to base the brothel at the school – but then where would it go?

But the problem with space and the need to employ a more regular staff, and to somehow manage to keep the two apart, were not the only things preying on her mind. For Madge some of the lustre of romping through the Tyrol had gone in recent weeks. For some reason, a pair of intense blue eyes seemed to haunt her at odd times, distracting her thoughts at the most inconvenient moments. Take the other evening, for example, she had been so distracted that she completely lost track of the number of times she had idly swung the whip back and forth – lost in a pleasant little daydream of her own – and had only been alerted to her preoccupation by the fact that the series of little moans from the chaise longue had become loud enough to finally penetrate her awareness. Horrified, she began to apologize, but in fact the client was rather more pleased than otherwise, and gave her a big bonus just before he inched painfully out of the secret exit. But it was not good business, thought Madge to herself, and resolved to keep her mind where it belonged next time.

Miss Durrant – the new mistress had so far been palmed off to Le Petit Chalet – and thus kept well out of the action, but Madge was well aware that this could only be a temporary fix. There had been some delicate questioning during her interview, but Miss Durrant had made it very clear that the only balls she had any interest in stroking were to be found at the end of a hockey stick.

It was also becoming harder to keep the girls occupied long enough for Madame or Mademoiselle to be able to slip away and attend to business. Luckily Madge had insisted from the start on an early bed policy, which although was attributed by parents to be part of the obsessive English preoccupation with health, was in fact the only way Madge, Mademoiselle and Miss Maynard could fit in their various clients.

Another respite came once Madge had remembered the idea of the school magazine, and had prompted Joey to revive it. She had hoped that someone else would have been appointed as editor – preferably Grizel in order to keep her out of mischief - but nonetheless until the magazine went to the printers, none of the girls could think of anything else but their contribution to great literature, and in fact Grizel was completely occupied in trying to write her games report. She found it exceptionally difficult at the best of times to write more than three consecutive words without resorting to slang, but as this was to be recorded for posterity, was making the supreme effort. At odd moments of the day she was heard to be plaintively asking any one in earshot “What’s another word for top-hole?”

But the real breakthrough for Madge came in a most unexpected fashion. It all started when, looking for Joey one afternoon, she discovered that no-one had seen her since the morning. Only the Robin appeared to have any idea at all at what may have led Joey to vanish, and thanks to her recalling a conversation Joey had had earlier with Eigen, Madge eventually discovered that she had rushed headlong to the rescue of some St Bernard pups that were due to be drowned. Just as Madge had been about to send out a search party to rescue her, she had emerged – dirty, torn and weeping – clutching a tiny puppy under her arms. She had begged to keep her and Madge – finding out from Marie the direction of the family – set off to pay for the puppy.

She discovered a family in considerable want. The failure of the pups to arrive during the tourist season had created a gap in the family’s income which they saw no hope of filling. The eldest daughter, a buxom blonde, with hair to rival Rapunzel, cherry red lips and bright blue eyes, was packing what appeared to be a small blanket with what were evidently her prized possessions. She looked determined, whilst in contrast the tears rolled down her mother’s cheeks, as she begged her not to go! That they would manage somehow! She clutched her daughter’s arms as if she would physically stop her leaving. But the girl gently released her mother’s arm and spoke to her gently. “No my mother. Thou knowest that unless we get some more money from somewhere, none of us will survive the winter. I will send back what I can, although it may not be much at first – there will be the room rent to find as well as the finding fee – but God willing if I put my back into it, I should earn enough for us all to make it through till spring.”

“But how shall I bear it, with my oldest daughter so far away!” wailed her mother – and at that – Madge, who not being many farthings short of a shiny new shilling had intuited exactly how the daughter of the house planned to top up the family budget, had her great idea….

Another mystery explained - why there are so many Austrian peasant girls working at the school while it is still so small!

Author:  abbeygirl [ Fri Apr 30, 2010 1:56 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Madame update 29/04

Small update today - I'll try and get another one done soon.....

The prospect of keeping 60% of everything she earned, plus a comfortable room and time off to visit her parents, was almost overwhelming and both Gredel and her mother were embarrassingly grateful to Madge for the offer. They were even more grateful when Madge suggested that as far as the rest of the world was concerned she had simply been offered the opportunity to come and help Marie with some of the domestic chores at the school – that way there would be no loss of reputation within the community – and she could explain her earnings away in this fashion.

At this the tears began to flow freely once more down the peasant woman’s cheeks, but this time they were tears of joy! “Gredel! Mine Liebling! You may still marry Franz after all!” and she explained to Madge that Gredel and Franz had been promised to one another since they had sat together learning their abc under the loving tutorage of Vater Johann. Franz, she went onto explain, was a local goatherder and thus was forced to leave his family and betrothed behind in the village for many long months, whilst he and his friends went off into the mountains.

For no apparent reason, Madge blushed at this point in the recital, but murmured “yes, we ran into a very hospitable group at the Mondscheinspitze the other day. They proved most welcoming indeed…..”

Accompanied by Gredel, Madge made her way back to the School. Gredel’s mother was delighted at the payment Madge had left for Joey’s puppy, the fact she was prepared to care for Zita during the long winter months, and most of all for the stroke of good fortune that had sent Madge to set up a brothel by the shores of the Tiernsee. Truly she had much for which to give thanks.

****

The new addition was greeted with delight all round. Herr Braun was thrilled at her typical Austrian appearance as they had already had to turn down a number of requests from tourists who wanted the full Austrian experience. Marie, too was pleased at the extra help around the School – Gredel was quite used to scrubbing on her hands and knees so the concept of adding a brush to the proceedings in order to clean floors came quite quickly to her. Her other duties she took to with an enthusiasm that meant a great deal more free time for the three mistresses at the school, and enough money sent back home that not only was the dread spectre of a starving winter comfortably allayed, but a dream of a beautiful new extension to her chalet, started to flit through her mother’s mind with increasing frequency.

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 30/04

I do apologise for one sentence - the inclusion of which I could not resist... I think it will be fairly clear which one I mean....

Gredel worked out so well – and so often – that Madge had no hesitation in employing two other girls that lived in the same village. Gredel herself had recommended them as being ideal– in fact her exact words had been something along the lines of, well they can’t keep their legs together for more than five minutes at a time anyway – they might as well get paid for it…. Madge had been a little concerned about their suitability after hearing that – it was, after all, supposed to be a somewhat more refined operation – but in fact Marthe and Carla both proved to be drop dead gorgeous, with several other extremely attractive features to recommend them, as well as an ability to do things with their two foot long golden plaits that boggled the mind – and added several Kroner onto the final bill. Thus two more maids were added to the school’s domestic roster, and whilst some of the female guests staying at the hotel wondered about the number of servants the school seemed to require, Herr Braun pointed out the well known English obsession with cleanliness, and this seemed to reassure them….

****

The servants quarters were becoming rather full, and it was clear that Madge would soon have to re-locate – but where?

****

Meanwhile the weather had grown still colder, and the lake was now frozen over. So hard indeed was the surface that an ice carnival was to be held. It offered the delights of skating, combined with the attractions of a fair, and some of the pupils at the school – amongst them Madge’s own sister Joey – were frightfully keen to go. However, upon consultation with Herr Braun, Madge had been firmly advised to keep the school well out of the way, and Madge determined to take his advice.

Joey and her cohorts were furious at the ukase and quickly determined that they would go anyway. It looked to be completely thrilling and it was real mean of Miss Bettany not to let them go. They crept out to join the throng of excited revelers and for a time enjoyed themselves, despite the insistent promptings of their conscience, but then disaster struck. Joey fell and before she could recover herself, saw a skater heading straight towards her outstretched fingers. It was dark – the lake was lit only by the torches at the side of the lake, there was no way the skater would see the prone figure. Joey could see the cruel blades flashing in the reflected light of the fires and suddenly it became too much to bear. She screamed – and then the world went black.

Madge Bettany hurried out of the School door, furiously angry at the defiance of her pupils, and determined to hoik them back into school immediately. She stopped short. Her heart leapt suddenly into her throat, interfering with her ability to breathe. A cavalcade was coming towards her – a horde of weeping pupils accompanying a man, who held in his arms the limp body of her sister, pale, grey and to all appearance, dead!

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 01/05

I did think about writing some more for you over the bank holiday - but I'm afraid Loch Fyne, the Fitzwilliam, and a bottle of ice cold sparkling wine got in the way....

But just as Madge started forward, all the terrible fear she felt for her sister written large on her face, Joey began to stir. Her eyes opened and she looked up at her rescuer. “I say! Aren’t you the man who helped us at the train?” but the pain from her fingers and ankle, caused her to utter a shriek of pain, and all conversation ceased at that point.

Madge had looked up briefly at Joey’s remark, but now all her concern and concentration was focused upon her small sister.

“Is there somewhere I could put her?” asked the man, his low husky voice sounding vaguely familiar, but there was no time to think about that now, and she turned and led the party to the small “official” study. She snapped on the light which illuminated a small couch, onto which he placed his burden as gently as possible. Having done so he began to unwind his outer wrappings, speaking soothingly – and once again huskily - to Madge “Don’t worry. There’s no real damage done. I’m a doctor – James Russell is the name.”

Besides wondering fleetingly if a doctor shouldn’t be able to do something about such an obviously sore throat – Madge really had little attention to spare for him. Mechanically she waved her permission for him to examine her sister, and sighed with relief when Miss Maynard ushered away the small group of Wailing Winnie’s who had accompanied them into the study.

He examined Joey carefully and discovered that she had done nothing more than to bruise herself fairly severely and also to sprain an ankle. “You’ll be fine after a few days in bed” he graveled. “I’m not going to rub it in – but you asked for it, now you need to take your punishment like a man.” He smiled at her to take the sting from his words, and promised to come back to see her in the morning.

Madge’s mind now relieved, she found she could finally concentrate her attention on him. It was indeed the man from the train – and yes those gorgeous eyes were the same, but she hadn’t been in much condition at the time to take in the rest of him. She did so now. Quite simply it was well worth the effort. Tall, with a chiseled jaw that whilst adding a certain manliness to his profile, also promised a stubborn character. The fair hair had been allowed to flop slightly over one eye, and somehow the contrast of this stray lock with the polished perfection of his dress and manner, made her toes start to curl. All in all if he was not quite the most gorgeous chunk of manhood she had ever come across, By Jiminy! He came damm close!

“I’ll show you out.” With a huge effort of will, Madge managed to sound perfectly normal even though her insides were currently behaving like pink marshmallow, and she led the way back through the Chalet to the front door.

She went to shake him politely by the hand, her heartfelt words of thanks on her lips. But he forestalled her.

“No thanks are necessary Miss Bettany. I could have wished for a less painful way of seeing you again, but I’ll take whatever hand I’m given.”
“But – how do you know my name?” she began, puzzled.

“I made it my business to find it out. I wasn’t going to let you go once I’d found you.”
He replied, the look in his eyes making his meaning clear. “I’ll call again tomorrow, Miss Bettany. I can check on your sister – and perhaps you could also spare me some of your – valuable – time?” There was a deliberation in his emphasis on “valuable” that made eyes shoot up to his, a question in them. He said nothing further, however, merely squeezed her hand once more. “Until tomorrow, then.” And he bowed politely and left, leaving Madge standing at the open door, her mind a mass of confusion, only the intense frost in the air eventually recalling her to the here and now.

There was nothing to be done about Doctor Russell until morning, so with a huge effort of will, Madge turned her attention back to her present duties. First to deal with her recalcitrant pupils, and then to settle with her sister. It promised to be a long night.

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 04/05

Madge had indeed had a busy night – and a very damp one. First she had dealt with the sinners who had joined Joey breaking bounds. The sight of Joey lying prostrate on the icy ground, had brought all of them back to their common or garden senses with a rush. Their consciences, which had been carefully suppressed, suddenly broke free and proceeded to extract revenge for having been so blatantly disregarded. Never before had any Chalet been so defiant, it roared, and the girls listened to its prompting in increasing horror. The sight of their beloved Miss Bettany’s face as she saw her sister’s crumpled body had served to put the tin lid on it, and they began to howl, only stopping to take enough breath to argue – one after the other - that it was all their fault, and no-one else should be blamed.

Joey, too, begged her not to punish the others, declaring that it had all been her fault, and certainly she had been punished enough, for that young lady hated to be still above all things, and the doctor had made it clear that this would be necessary for at least a week.

It should be noted in passing that Miss Bettany’s heart was not really in her strictures. Even in the middle of a particularly well rounded crushing phrase, the usual withering bite was missing, and in the end she dismissed them, sending them forthwith to their beds, having decided that they had effectively managed to punish themselves, and more pertinently, anxious to end the interview before the flooding of her study became an issue – already there were several large puddles for Eigen to deal with later.

And so to bed, but for Madge, there was little comfort to be found in sleep. The question of what Dr Russell wanted from her, why he had paused on the word “valuable” all preyed on her mind, and in the end she decided to give up the idea of immediate sleep and instead began work on the new advertising slogan for the business. Herr Braun had advised her that a catchy tagline was a necessity, and although Madge felt they were doing quite well enough, she acquiesced to his advice. Up until now, however, the right phrase had failed her – she had come up with plenty of ideas – had toyed with various ideas such as “….The Ride of Your Life” and “Discover the tiger in your pants..”, but felt that none of these adequately reflected the tone of Briesau’s Best Bordelo Inc. and then, just as she was giving up the fight, and drifting off to sleep, it came to her

“Discover the secret of the fountain of manhood…”

Perfect! Discreet yet informative… and thus she finally fell asleep, happily conscious of a job well done.

******

The morning came at last, and no-one at the school wondered about Madge’s air of abstraction. Obviously she was still worried about Joey. Well she was, of course, but that was not her sole medical preoccupation at breakfast…

Joey was stiff and sore, and thankful to rest, so Madge left her to sleep – and she herself went back to the study, and tried – fruitlessly -to settle her mind on anything but the forthcoming interview.

Those who may have seen one of my all time favourite films as often as I have, may either be in awe at my clever adaptation - or alternatively decide I have shamlessly nicked some of its best lines at the end of this post ....

He came, just as her nerves were stretched to breaking point. He bowed politely over her outstretched hand – did he linger there for a moment longer than necessary? Or was that merely nerves?

“I expect you have come to look at my sister?” Madge began, and half made a move as if to leave the room.

“Partly, of course, but I had a more pressing reason.” He replied, making no attempt to follow her lead, and so Madge sank gracefully into the nearest chair, and with a serene face which showed no sign of her inner turmoil, waited for him to speak.

He seemed in no immediate hurry to begin, his long flannel covered legs, criss-crossing several times whilst the silence dragged on between them. Before it became completely ridiculous, he suddenly got up from his chair, and began jerkily pacing the room. “Look Miss Bettany, for some reason this was much easier in my mind than it is proving to be in real life, so please bear with me if it doesn’t come out quite right.” The urbane, sophisticated man had gone, but Madge found she quite liked the boyish air of uncertainty. She smiled encouragingly at him.

“My name is an old established one in England Miss Bettany, and unlike many others we have been fortunate enough to keep hold of much of our wealth. Whilst I would be lying to say that it is anything less than pleasant to want for almost nothing, it does also carry with it some serious disadvantages. Since I came down from University, I have proved to be something of an attraction for the young ladies in the county – luckily I’m fairly sure that it is my money and position they are most interested in, otherwise I may well have developed something of an inflated ego.” Dr James smiled wryly at this point and continued “One has had to be so careful – the wrong words at the wrong time can be taken as a promise of marriage – and that is the last thing I wanted. I had to work hard to persuade my parents to let me study medicine –and I feel I owe it to their memory to make a success of it – and I don’t feel I can do that with a wife in tow.”

He was absorbed in his story now and so failed to see Madge start a little at this. Her eyes – which had been lowered demurely – shot up to look at his face in some puzzlement, and then – before she could give anything away – had dropped back to their minute examination of her rather elegantly shod foot.

“That’s why, when I came to the Kronz Prinz Karl and found out about you and your .um… organization? I thought it would be ideal! What I am suggesting Miss Bettany is that I pay for your services exclusively – say initially for a period of 7 days and naturally the nights too – and at the end of that time, both parties will be free to renegotiate – or not – the contract for a further, mutually agreeable period of time. We both know that there is nothing more between us that a simple business agreement - and so there can be no misunderstandings about future intentions. What do you think?”

Madge said nothing for a moment. A long moment. Her head was still bent and no-one would have seen the sudden glitter in those beautiful brown eyes. She had not realized until that moment that deep down she was still harboring romantic dreams of her own particular knight in shining armour. She took it out, dusted it off, and put it carefully away, this time for good.

The eyes that turned to Dr James were harder than he had seen before, and the voice – which and been so soft and low – what was it that Shakespeare had said? – never mind it would come back to him sometime he supposed - had lost its gentleness. She had suddenly become very brisk and very businesslike.

“That sort of arrangement would be extremely expensive, I doubt you could afford it.” She flung the words carelessly at him and stood before him, challengingly.

“Try me.” He replied steadily, not breaking eye contact.

“Three hundred pounds.” She said flatly. It was quite frankly an unbelievable amount – nearly a whole year’s school fees.

“Done.” He said and held out his hand so they could formalize the agreement in the traditional manner.”

Madge closed her mouth. She shook the outstretched hand to seal their bargain, and as she did so said mockingly “I would have done it for £200.”

He held her gaze and shot back immediately “I would have paid £500.”

Post subject:  Re: Madame update 06/05

Yes it is Pretty Woman ..... I do love that film!

“I’d like you to come out to dinner with me tonight.” Dr James – or Dr Jem as he had told Madge – and Joey of course – to call him said abruptly, once the deal had been agreed. Madge looked a bit surprised, it was hardly the sort of services she had expected to be asked to perform for that sort of money. She agreed – and then mentioned rather hesitantly that she supposed it would be at the Kronz Prinz Karl. She was totally taken off guard when he told her that in fact it would be at one of the best hotels in Innsbruck! She knew her modest wardrobe was by no means suitable for such an occasion. Madge liked clothes as well as the next person, but when she had had to think firstly of clothing Joey, who seemed to grow every time her back was turned, and secondly of making a very inadequate allowance go an excessively long way, there had been very little to spare for Madge’s adornment. Whilst it was true she had spent some money in Paris on a number of items of clothing – she could not perceive that diaphanous gauze nor indeed those items of apparel that had featured – what was it the sales assistant had said “areas of convenient access” – would be suitable for such an event. For her other – less colourful persona - she had long ago discovered that a very simple skirt and blouse – made of material as good as she could afford – stood in her good stead for most things– but they would certainly not withstand the scrutiny of those women who tended to frequent hotels such as the one Dr Jem now proposed to visit.

He was somewhat surprised at Madge’s lack of enthusiasm, but when she haltingly explained the situation – with a flush of embarrassment - he briskly waived away her concerns. “That’s not a problem – we’ll go straight to Innsbruck and see to it now.” And as Madge made to protest, he overrode her objections – telling her that he would enjoy the experience, and that it was an investment as her was relying on Madge to charm his dinner guests, as he was looking to but some land from them, and at present they were reluctant to sell.”

In the wake of such eloquence, Madge allowed herself to be persuaded, although the inward and very femimine thrill of satisfaction at the thought of buying a new dress – was very well disguised.

“I must see to Joey first, and let Therese know that I shall be out for the rest of the day.” She said firmly and got up from her chair to suit the action to the word.

“Wait a mo! I’ve brought those Elsie books I promised Joey. I’ll go and get them now and that will keep her happy for a while if I don’t miss my guess…”

When she saw the huge heap that Dr Jem staggered in with, Madge could not help but agree!

Joey greeted them both eagerly – and as anticipated, her eyes lit up at the sight of the books. “You’re a gem Dr Jem!” she cried in delight. She hardly heard Madge’s explanation that she had to go to Innsbruck with Dr Jem - and it was quite clear to her sister that at least one person in the school would not mourn her absence!
Therese too had been understanding, and so Madge and Dr Jem set off for Innsbruck to shop until they dropped.

The nearest I could get to Rodeo Drive.....

“I have to make several arrangements for this evening. I won’t be too long, but here is my business card. You can use that to charge anything you like to my account.” And with those words, Dr Jem left Madge outside the biggest department store in Innsbruck

It was a long time since Madge had entered such an obviously expensive store – and it was not without some trepidation that she stepped through the glass door, held open for her by an attentive door man. Inside, the impression of overwhelming wealth continued, with every inch that could be gilded adorned accordingly. Crystal chandeliers sparkled, and beautiful old rugs were liberally scattered along the highly polished, gleaming floors. It was with a sense of shock that Madge realized that even the assistants were more fashionably dressed than was she – and some were even obviously made up! She made her way to the women’s department and at the sight of the glorious silks and satins laid out before her eyes, she forgot her misgivings and prepared to lose herself in the sensation of for once buying an outfit, without worrying about its cost or its potential usefulness.

It was strange that an assistant had not approached her, thought Madge after some little time had passed. She hadn’t really noticed over much as it had been such fun walking through the department and looking at the array of beautiful things. She looked around and saw several assistants at the counter – all three were looking at her, but not one of them made a move to help her. Madge felt the glorious pleasure in her outing begin to fade away, but she had never been a spineless jellyfish, and she was not going to start now. She lifted her chin and moved to the counter.

“I am looking to purchase several items from this department.” Madge said firmly.

No one moved for a long moment. Then what was evidently the senior assistant stirred. She looked Madge up and down, from the tip of her unfashionably long hair, down the length of her hand made silk blouse and to the comfortable, practical shoes she wore.

“And how does Madam intend to pay for these goods?” she drawled, not moving from behind the counter, her dismissive stance evidently designed to make Madge feel so uncomfortable that she would just turn and leave.

However, Madge was made of sterner stuff and would not give way. “I have a card here – the clothes are to go on this account.” And she held it out. The woman ignored both the gesture and the card.

“I really don’t think we have anything in this department which would be suitable for madam. Do we Gisel?” and the dark haired, shingled assistant to her left, agreed with an very audible sniff.

Humiliated, her cheeks fiery red, but determined not to show any sign of distress, Madge quietly returned the card to her bag.

“Then I shall try elsewhere.” She bowed her head fractionally, and turned to leave with such a dignified air, that the assistant began to wonder if perhaps they had been mistaken in their assessment.

“Is there a problem my dear?” The voice was Jem’s and she turned to him in relief.

“Apparently there is nothing suitable for me to purchase here, Jem. It appears I need to find an alternative store.” She spoke quietly, but the distress was apparent in her eyes, and she could not hide the relief that sight of him had brought.

He frowned, taking in the situation at glance and felt conscious of a surge of protectiveness that was unfamiliar to him.

“Please fetch the manager of the store.” He said, quietly enough, but with a hint of steel that was clearly audible.

The individual in question appeared promptly – and with one comprehensive glance realized that there could be great deal of trouble ahead if the situation was not swiftly resolved.

“What seems to be the problem?” he addressed Jem, who in his well cut, obviously expensive suit, was obviously the force to be reckoned with here.

In the stuffiest voice imaginable, Jem deigned to explain. “My ward, Miss Bettany, has lately come into a considerable inheritance and wished to be completely outfitted in a manner becoming her new status. My very good friend – Hugh Grosvenor – recommended this establishment. I fear he will be most distressed when I relate our unfortunate experience.”

The manager had gone white – hardly surprising as Jem had just dropped the name of the richest men in England, one of the country’s leading aristocrats and a man who yet to known to spare expense where either his wife or many of his many mistresses throughout Europe were concerned. He rushed into many and voluble apologies.

“Madam! I am desolated that you have been discommoded in any way. These silly girls were only on trial here – and let me assure you that after today they will be searching for employment elsewhere. Let me summon our head seamstress – who will be happy to show you anything – anything at all – that you would like! Gies! Champagne for Madame and Monsieur whilst they wait! And chairs! Quickly man! Quickly!”

There was a flurry of activity, but in the midst of the confusion, Madge noticed the sales assistant who had been so dismissive of her earlier and was now out of a job as a result. She looked – stricken - Madge thought and more than that there was an air of complete and utter despair. There could be no doubt that all three women had been thoroughly rude and hurtful as well as unprofessional, and a part of Madge exulted in their comeuppance, but the greater part of Madge – in all senses of the word - could not see suffering or want and not try to alleviate either.

“I am sure that now any misunderstandings have been resolved, that this lady” and Madge gestured towards the woman “will suit me very well.” Madge did not attempt to raise her quiet, beautiful voice, but it nonetheless produced a total silence within the busy store. It was hard to know just who was the most surprised, there were varying degrees of shock on virtually everyone’s face, but in the eyes of the assistant, there was both shock, and the dawning of a desperate hope. She took a step forward, then her eyes flew to the manager. With a shrug of his shoulder he signalled permission for her to attend Madge and Jem. There was simply no understanding these English – but as long as they were happy, that was all he cared about and having established them carefully on a pair of ornate gilt chairs, he retired quickly – and thankfully – to the sanctuary of his office.

“I truly beg your pardon Madam for my rudeness earlier. I thank you, and promise you that it will never happen again.” Before attempting to show her any clothes, the woman had gone straight up to Madge, and apologized.

Madge smiled gently at her “I am sure you will remember. And now – if I am to spend a great deal of money in this store – I will require a great deal of attention and considerable amounts of flattery!”

Her words lightened the intensity of the atmosphere and at a gesture, assistants scurried into life. Within minutes mannequins were walking round the department, displaying a dazzling array of clothes. Evening dresses, day dresses, afternoon dresses and cocktail gowns, as well as a very special collection, from a designer who was becoming incredibly popular in Paris. Madge loved the fabulous black dress that was designed to be incredibly practical as well as decorative – it was made of material designed not to show the dirt! - the long belted cardigan and the straight, well cut skirt she could see would be practical as well as fashionable, and she found herself curiously tempted by the luxurious but surely scandalous wide legged pants. The assistant explained that these were all the work of a designer called Coco Chanel who looked set to revolutionize what women wore.

Madge would have been happy with just a dress for the evening, but Dr Jem appeared to be enjoying himself, and insisted on her trying on most of the Chanel collection – including the pants! – as well a two totally delectable Worth gowns. A heavy ivory silk, was so beaded that it clung to her body – the back daringly low cut. There was a beautiful bronze silk that shimmered and made her brown eyes seem even darker than ever. He bought them all over her protests and then waited patiently for coats – evening and day - feathers, hats, shoes, lingerie and perfume to be added to the huge bundle of packages.

The assistant had recommended that Madge have her hair done – not shingled – but cut to a fashionable length, assuring her that the new clothes would appear to much greater advantage and indeed pointing out that it was only possible to wear the fashionable cloche style of hat if one had short hair. And after all that, Madge was made up. She refused point blank to paint her nails, and objected vehemently to more than a suspicion of rouge or powder, but nonetheless arrayed in one of the new dresses and dainty heels, with hair fashionably and attractively arranged, she looked fantastic. Indeed catching sight of herself in the mirror as she waited for Dr Jem, she hardly recognised herself.

And when Dr Jem came back, neither did he.

Hope there aren't too many horrendous mistakes here - no time to edit properly!

Madge took a great deal of satisfaction from hearing a dull thud, a sound which had been occasioned by Dr Jem’s jaw hitting the highly polished wooden floor. Elegantly she rose to her feet, and nonchalantly swayed past him, fabulously long cigarette holder in one elegantly gloved hand, as she made her way to the exit. It was a moment or so before she realised that Dr Jem had not followed and looking back she saw he was still mesmerised, apparently entranced by the way the dress was moulded to her body. She blushed – and then smiled.

Dr Jem’s mind was in something of a turmoil. He had not really seen Madge at anything like her best before. At their first meeting he had been impressed by her courage, but she had – if he was honest– looked like she had been pulled through a hedge backwards. On their second meeting, she had been in a towering rage when he first caught sight of her and had then nearly collapsed with fear for her sister, again neither circumstance designed to make him expire with unfulfilled longing, but nonetheless he recognised clearly that he was strongly attracted to her – and had been from the first despite the circumstances. Indeed he had been unable to put her completely from his mind, which was how he had found himself back at the Tiernsee.

And then he had discovered - whilst staying at the Kronz Prinz Karl - that she was a … a.. lady of negotiable virtue was the phrase he eventually decided sounded best, and for some reason – he still did not now why – this had knocked him for six. He had contemplated simply cutting his losses and leaving, but had instead decided that this way was better. He would enjoy her “companionship” for a week – or maybe more if they were both agreeable to extending the arrangement – and that would be it.

He hadn’t realised just how good she could look. She was stunning! And that figure. All of a sudden he was very sorry indeed that he had arranged that business dinner. He would very much rather go and investigate exactly what sort of lingerie Madge had chosen – and just how easy it was to remove!

*******

There were two men already seated at the table Jem and Madge were ushered to. They rose in tandem as Madge approached, and both made it very clear indeed that she was a more than welcome addition to the table. Jem surprised himself with a spurt of temper when Schmider – Damm his eyes! – lingered just a little too long over Madge’s hand.

His mood was not improved by the fact that the conversation at the table was conducted entirely in German. Schmider had gallantly made the attempt to speak English, but when it had become clear that Madge was fluent, he – and his colleague Herr Rainer – could not disguise their delight at being able to give up the struggle. Jem could speak German – moderately well – but found it impossible to follow the other three. Every so often one or other would notice, and explain anything he had missed. Although he thanked them exceedingly politely each time for taking the trouble – it did nothing to improve his mood.

The evening broke up much earlier than the two Austrians would have liked, but Dr Jem was firm, and far more quickly than she would have thought possible, they were making their way back to the school.

*****

The beautiful silk dress dropped to the floor, revealing that Madge had in fact been able to wear very little of her new underwear. Dr Jem decided not to complain. She moved purposefully towards him, and for a long while Dr Jem thought of nothing very much at all.

How could I let brie down?

Madge and Jem were lounging on the sumptuously stuffed chaise longue, enjoying a post coital cigarette. Jem was idly flicking through a book he had discovered, and was puzzled to see that although some of the pictures appeared familiar enough, he couldn’t work out what language it was.

“That? Oh that’s Hindustani ” Madge explained as she glanced casually at the book in his hand, and then lay back down, languidly stretching satiated muscles, and smiling softly to herself as she remembered the events of the past few hours.

*****

Not taking her eyes off his, Madge had swiftly divested herself of the remaining scraps of silk she still wore. Slowly she lowered herself onto the chaise longue and patted the space beside her invitingly. His eyes – and indeed various other parts – bulging, he tore off his clothes with reckless disregard for Saville Row’s finest. In just a few moments he stood before her, ready, willing and very obviously able.

“Doctor! Why don’t you examine me?” Madge had purred, pointing out several bits of her anatomy that could do with a little medical attention.

“Let me use my very own thermometer to check just how hot you are..” he had leered, waving the aforementioned object suggestively in his hand.

She had smothered a laugh but had soon discovered her temperature wasn’t the only thing raised in the room, and also that Dr Jem was highly skilled in operating all sorts of instruments.

“So why do you have a copy of the Karma Sutra in Hindustani?” Jem persisted, his curiosity roused – after three times in fairly quick succession, there was very little chance of anything else being raised for a while.

“It was my mother’s.” replied Madge “she gave it to me when I asked her the usual question– you know how did I get here, that sort of thing. I was hoping to be told a stork had brought me one night – but Mamma always believed in giving us the whole story.”

Jem had stopped at one particular illustration. He turned it one way – and then another – “Is this actually possible?” he wondered out loud.

Madge glanced over his shoulder. “Oh that one! Yes it is actually – but it’s one of the positions that can only be achieved after years of practice. Apparently the women of the Ayerash tribe specialise in it.”

Jem wondered briefly about emigrating but then as sudden thought struck him demanded suddenly “How do you know it’s possible?”.

“My ayah showed me how to do it… said it would be a damn sight more use to me in the future than bikram yoga. She showed me how to achieve that one – oh and that one as well, and made sure I didn’t shirk my daily practice!” and looking at the illustrations Madge had indicated, Jem discovered to his surprise that his interest in the pictures was not the only thing that was growing.

*****

Madge found need of a light dusting of cosmetics the next morning – or in truth she should say later on that morning. She was tired – and looked it – but the girls attributed this to worry about Joey and sympathised, whilst Mademoiselle headed off any awkward questions that Miss Durrant might have been tempted to ask. She managed to eat a hearty breakfast – somehow she thought it might be necessary to keep up her strength – and then went off to visit her sister.

Joey greeted her rapturously – and with a host of questions about the civil war. Madge eventually fled laughing and sent Frieda off to her with a pile of reference books, plenty of paper and a brand new pen.

Mademoiselle ran her to earth in the study, dealing with various letters and accounts as she waited for Dr Jem to arrive. She looked at Madge, and her experienced eyes spotted the glow of a woman who has been very well pleased indeed. She sighed a little inwardly, hoping against hope that Madge would emerge from the week with heart intact, but said nothing, and left the younger woman to her work – or more accurately her thoughts – as very little paperwork was actually being completed.

“You don’t really know the Duke of Westminster? Do you?” asked Madge, as they sat companionably together in the study, drinking Kaffee and eating the delicious twists of bread that were traditionally consumed at this time.

There was a pause and then, very unexpectedly as far as Madge was concerned, Jem nodded. “Actually I do. He was my CO during the war.” And then he fell silent and Madge didn’t know what to say next. Her brother had been too young to fight, but of course there was not one person in the small Devon town of Taverton – the small Devon town they had come from - that had escaped its grip entirely. Fathers, brothers, cousins, uncles had all gone off to fight. Many, far, far too many of them had never come back.

She recalled those lines of Laurence Binyon

“ With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.”

And with a wisdom that she was not aware of, did not attempt to break the silence. Eventually Jem continued to speak.

“I was lucky.” He said flatly and without looking at her. “ I ran across Hugh in France. By some fantastic coincidence he discovered we’d gone to the same Prep. He took a liking to me and arranged for me to be transferred to the Cheshire’s. He was in charge of the armoured tank division. I can tell you I positively jumped at the chance. I hated the trenches. The mud, so thick and foul you were never free of the stench of it. It was easier for us – the officers – but the rats don’t differentiate between the ranks, and snipers positively preferred us if they got the chance.” He fell silent again, lost in the remembrance of that time. Any how” he continued after a short while “that’s where I saw the war out. Got involved in a couple of big shows with the Gov’ner – and that’s when I decided to become a doctor – saw too many men blown to bits and couldn’t do anything to help them.”

Madge looked at him, unshed tears glittering in her beautiful dark eyes. She could picture it all so clearly and her heart ached for the lost innocence of the boy/man that had been Jem then. She lay down her own cup, took his from his hands and turning his face towards hers, kissed him. Gentle, butterfly kisses they began as, then as lips met, they became more urgent. They broke away, both breathing slightly harder than formerly.

Madge smiled shakily at Jem “Fancy trying the Striking Monkey?”

Jem made a mental note never to offend a monkey as he fell back onto the chaise longue, exhausted and experiencing more than a few muscle twinges – obviously he wasn’t as flexible as Madge. The thought made him look at her quickly and he was just in time to marvel at the competent way she disentangled first one leg from behind her ear and then another – although he wasn’t quite sure exactly where the second had been. He made a half hearted effort to try and work it out, but quickly decided he couldn’t care less. Thinking was way too much effort. Actually everything was too much effort and with that thought, Jem slept, all recollection of war vanquished.

*****

“Why did you decide to establish a brothel?” Jem asked her curiously some time later. “I mean why not just a school?”

It was the same question as Joey had asked and essentially Madge gave the same reply. “Do you know how many schools fail in their first year?” she asked quietly. “We had to sell everything to start up here. Failure was simply not an option. We sent a third of the money with Dick, he will need some capital behind him when he marries. But the rest has to keep Joey and I – and Mademoiselle Lepattre (apparently she took the opportunity when handing in her notice of detailing the finer points of the characters of her late charges, so it is unlikely that she will be using any references that they might provide should she need to seek employment in the future) and her nieces. Now there is also Juliet and the Robin – Captain Humphries pays a little towards her keep – but has very little money – so there has to be provision also made for her. Then, although the school is rowing rapidly, so have the staff bills, and the new furniture, new bedding – Oh an endless list! So far most of the fees have been consumed by the start up costs – and it will not be until next year at the earliest that we sill begin to recoup this outlay. So this was my insurance.”

“But why you? Why do you have such a “hands on role” in the business?”

“Why not? When I lived in India, sex was treated much more openly – at least in our household. It was recognised as being of fundamental importance in any relationship. But most importantly, it is assumed that the act itself should be equally pleasurable for the man and the woman. Compare that to home, where woman are taught to lie back and think of England. How much joy – for either partner - can there be in that? If I had stayed there and accepted the offers that were made, that is what would have been expected of me – and it wasn’t enough. I wanted more. This way I have financial independence – the ability to support those for whom I am responsible, and also the chance – from time to time - to experience some very enjoyable umm…interludes.”

“ I see….”

Madge waited, but Jem said no more. She shrugged mentally – what else could she have said? This was the truth, and she wanted nothing less than that between them.

“You kissed him, didn’t you Madge? On the lips!” Mademoiselle said accusingly. “I warned you about that! Never kiss them on the lips!”

“No.. I … Um . Look it’s not a problem. It’s just a business deal.” Madge tried for nonchalant but the expression of total disbelief on her partner’s face stopped her in her tracks. “All right, maybe I did. But it’s fine, I’m fine - honestly Therese.”

Mademoiselle said no more, and from mercy left Madge alone in the study, lost in thought.

*******

Jem counted out money from a well filled pocket book and began to give it to her. Then he stopped “Look Madge – could we come to a more permanent arrangement?”

“Such as?” her tone was light and gave nothing of her feelings away.

“Well – I thought perhaps we could extend our contract for a bit longer – say six months this time? Or a year if you liked? I could make you a regular allowance – however much you wanted – and as the school’s medical adviser, no-one would wonder at me slipping in and out all the time….”

“You’ve obviously given it a good deal of thought.”

“Well yes. I mean, it’s a big commitment for me. I’ve never wanted to tie myself up to any one woman before now, although having said that, it does sound rather exciting.” Jem tried to lighten the atmosphere which seemed – for some reason beyond his ken – to have suddenly become overshadowed.

“It’s a very handsome offer. Will you let me think about it? Obviously I’ll let you know as soon as possible.” The tone was still light, but it was a dismissal nonetheless. Dr Jem left the study somewhat uncertainly and made his way back to the hotel, wondering a little where he had gone wrong. Then he dismissed the matter from his mind – he still had much work to do if his dream of a sanatorium set in the glorious mountains of the Tyrol was to come to pass. The first step was the land – Herr Schmider still had not decided whether or not to sell it to him. He had been pretty taken with Madge – perhaps between them they could somehow charm him … And then he remembered. There might not be any Madge by his side to help him now. For some reason the thought gave him a pang of disquiet, and then he shook himself. It would only be a matter of time – what woman – especially one who ran a brothel – would turn down an offer such as his. And with that thought bringing him comfort, Dr Jem whistled as he walked to his temporary home.

“Where’s M…My sister?” asked Joey, now released from the captivity of the sofa, but still very much restricted in her movements.

“She’s gone to interview some more staff. She should be back later. I’m sure she’ll come and visit later on.” Mademoiselle told her gently, and comforted, Joey returned to her writing. Already there was a large pile of paper by her side, filled with her flowing writing, and still Joey showed no signs of stopping.

In fact Mademoiselle was the only one who knew exactly where Madge had gone. Marthe had been able to recommend a cousin from the next village, whose family were also poverty struck, and who was known for her charitable disposition. No lonely goatherder had ever appealed to her better nature in vain, indeed she had taken to playing the giddy goat with great enthusiasm. Outwardly quiet, unassuming and modest, Josefina showed no visible signs of her active social life – and wept tears of joy at the tantalising prospects Madge held out to her. In return for this favour, she pointed Madge to two other prospective candidates – Rosa – who had developed a speciality of her own which relied heavily on the hand muscles that had developed through years of milking goats, cows and anything else with teats that stood still long enough – and Lise, lovely and lissom and with a treasure chest so large, it was a miracle she could stand up straight. Both seemed delighted at the thought of exercising their varied gifts in the comfort of a warm, well stuffed feather bed, and happily agreed to Madge’s terms. Thus, in a very short space of time, Madge had doubled her full time staff.

Madge had decided that the girls were to be given the opportunity to learn basic life skills whilst they remained in her charge, and hence, lessons in reading, writing and basic arithmetic were held. The girls were also given the opportunity to sell the beautiful needlework with which they occupied their generous leisure time – and such items found as ready a sale amongst the female guests at the hotel as did their other assets amongst the male guests.

Madge’s latest recruitment drive meant there were now six full time employees of Briesau’s Best Bordelo Inc. This was in addition to Marie – and even on a couple of notable occasions – Hans – being prepared to put in a bit of overtime. The new staff quickly and enthusiastically seetled in, and immediately proved extremely popular with the regular patrons. This had become increasingly important recently as Miss Maynard had indicated that she would quite like to “retire” now that she’d finished helping to pay her brother’s way through his medical training, Mademoiselle had noted that her health would be improved through the expenditure of more time on her backside than on her back, and Madge – well for reasons of her own Madge had decided that for now at least she would like to take a more administrative than active role in the organisation.

That settled it was time for her to give Jem his answer.

I'm really sorry.... I couldn't help myself....

“Joey wrote this!?” Jem was astounded as he let fall the last page filled with the younger Miss Bettany’s rather untidy handwriting.

“Yes – rather good isn’t it!” said Madge, not trying very hard to conceal her pride in her little sister. “With any luck Joey will be able to make her way in the world as a writer.”

“If she carries on like this, I would say it was almost inevitable! It’s one thing being able to write a short story –quite another to be able to manage a book like this. Let me have that thing she wrote for the Magazine. I’ll send it to a friend of mine – he runs a paper back home and they’re running a story competition. It’s really designed for children much older than Joey – but I think it’s good enough to stand a chance at a prize.”

Madge’s eyes glowed. “That would be wonderful! Thank you!”

Then as the silence grew between them, the light in those glorious eyes slowly dimmed. Madge took a deep breath, knowing she could put it off no longer “Dr. I mean – Jem. I want to thank you for your offer. I know you meant it kindly, but I’m afraid I’ll have to say no.”

Jem could not believe his ears! He had been so sure she would say yes. He had been counting on it. The notion that she would not longer be his exclusively was something he had not even begun to contemplate. And strangely, now that he did, he found that he didn’t like it one little bit.

“ I see.” He said stiff upper lip to the fore. Then it wobbled. “But Why!?” he burst out, simply unable to understand why a woman who made a living – oh all right part of a living – sleeping with a selection of men should turn down such an incredibly generous offer!

Madge was very calm, very dignified, and very gentle “I know it is a good offer, and I admit I was tempted. But I had the chance to settle for second best at home, and I thought long and hard about what was best for me then – and for Joey – and I decided second best wasn’t enough – it still isn’t.”

“What is it that you want then?

“I want it all – or nothing at all. Unless and until I get the fairytale – I’ll settle for what I have.”

“That’s impossible! I told you this was the biggest commitment I had ever offered to any woman – it’s all I have to offer right now. Won’t you even think about it a bit longer?” To his horror, Jem heard a note of pleading enter his voice. At Madge’s sad shake of the head, he felt a strange lump come into his throat, and before he could give himself away, he turned, blindly making for the door. He stood on the door step briefly, willing her to say it was a mistake, that she had changed her mind, but she sat, head bowed, not looking at him, fingers firmly, tightly entwined in her lap. And so he left.

Once sure he had gone, Madge raised her eyes. They seemed to glisten as the afternoon light flickered around the room, but perhaps that was a trick of the light – it had been her decision to send him away after all. She sat, still and silent, sorrowing for what might have been, and then with a determined effort, she banished self pity. “Well that’s that then! Back to work I suppose” and with that she got up, and started to hunt for the advertising slogan that had taken her so long to create. She looked at it again, what was it Dr Jem had said to her about it? Something about it being too girly to appeal to men on the pull. What had he suggested instead? Oh yes that was it…..

Briesau’s Brothel… “The Breast a man can get….”

Just a short one today...

It was an interesting phenomenon thought Frau Berlin, just how much a man’s job could impinge on his private life. For instance, take Franz – and believe me she had done so a number of times since their first meeting – never before had she seen a man manage to hoist a go signal quite so often, while she remained pleasantly surprised by his ability to steam straight into the tunnel of love, and delighted by his tendency not to stop until all passengers on board had reached their destination. Not that she was complaining, rather the opposite in fact. It reminded her of the good old days when work was a hands on business, not like today when the only pen being dipped in the ink was her parker pen in the office as she signed a contract to take over yet another house of ill repute. It was a shame really that this very pleasurable interlude had had to come to an end, but the combination of a phone call from the Berlin office and the arrival – at last! - of some clothes meant an unwelcome return to reality. It had been rather strange that her clothes had taken so long to arrive. Apparently there had been some sort of mix up at the station office and despite Franz religiously going to check each day, he had somehow missed the large parcel. Had it not been for the station master unexpectedly calling one day, and mentioning it in passing, they might never have known it had arrived! She couldn’t understand why Dear Franz had called him an interfering basket, nor indeed why being referred to as a piece of woven willow proved to be so upsetting for the station master. There was simply no understanding men at all!.

Dressed in a silk dress that flowed in a faithful echo of her uncorseted person, Frau Berlin felt ready to resume her journey to Briesau. There she could continue the interrupted search for her mysterious rival, and once she found her, then she could close her down – permanently - one way or another......

Dr Jem still looked dazed as he stood at the large dark wood reception desk, waiting to check out. He replayed the scene with Madge in her study over and over again, but it made as little sense to him now as it had done at the time. That was that then. It was over, if the term could really be attached to a business agreement which had lasted for just a week. And yet it stuck in his mind. Over. Finished. The end.

“Was everything to your satisfaction sir?” enquired the receptionist as she handed over the rather hefty bill.

“Pardon? Oh yes. Yes, everything was just fine thank you.” And Jem pulled himself together, and putting all thoughts of Madge aside, paid the bill without a murmur.

Herr Braun himself came to say goodbye to this most esteemed guest – that would be one who both stayed a long time, had plenty of money and who wasn’t too particular about checking the finer details of his itemised account. “Will you be returning to us, Dr Russell?”

Jem shook his head “No. No I don’t think so. I’ve decided to go and look at a few other potential locations.”

“That’s a shame, Sir. It seemed as if everything was just perfect for you here. It must be a sad to give up everything you have gained here, to start all over again in a new place.”

Jem’s eyes shot to the hotel manager. He read the message in eyes that were strangely pitying. Why on earth would a hotel keeper in the middle of nowhere, pity him? He was young (ish), free, and single, no ties, no-one to keep him tied down. No-one at all. And yet, for the first time in his life, the thought of being completely on his own did not provide him with any sense of comfort at all. And for no reason that he could see, his mind returned to the Chalet School, to Madge, and he suddenly pictured her, waiting for him to come home, that elusive smile on her face, and wearing absolutely nothing else at all.

“I require your very best room. Immediately. Of course I want a double room. Do I look like I want a single room!” and the would-be guest sighed heavily at the stupidity of these Austrians. They were simply not as efficient as the Prussian hotels, which were renowned throughout the world. As she waited for the girl to find her the room, her eyes glanced around the reception area. She saw rather good looking man, with intense blue eyes and a chiselled face. He seemed lost in thought, but as her eyes automatically travelled downwards, her eyebrows shot up. Well, well, well! Either he was packing a pistol, or he was very, very pleased at the thought of seeing someone.

Longish post today... trying to get as much done as pos before going on holiday on thursday....

The man hovering in the foyer seemed vaguely familiar for some reason, and, possibly, had she spent more time actually looking at his face, rather than hovering somewhat lower, she may have been able to remember exactly where she had seen him before. But before she could return her gaze to a more socially acceptable direction, she had been recalled to the here and now by the voice of the receptionist.

“Here is your room key Madam. Will you be requiring anything else?”

Frau Berlin grabbed the large key being held out to her. “Yes” she snapped “Send me up a bottle of Schnapps – no make that two.” And then as she swivelled round she caught sight of a nearby porter. His tight trousers left very little to the imagination, and Frau Berlin grinned lasciviously “and make sure he brings them up” she ordered, and flowed off to her room, licking her lips in anticipation of a tasty afternoon snack of sausage and Schnapps.

Stefan sighed mournfully as Heidi gave him the message. It was not a good day. Those trousers Herr Braun insisted he wore were killing him. Why they had to be that tight he had no idea. And now he had to take Schnapps up to the hotel’s newest guest. He sighed again as he minced his way painfully towards the lift. The things you had to do to get a decent tip round here..

He knocked at the door. Bertha Berlin opened it, dressed only in a pair of stockings and suspenders, and before he had time to scream more than once, had pulled him into the room. The door slammed behind him and Stefan was left to defend his honour as best he might.

*****

As a matter of courtesy, Jem had decided to call on Herr Scmider and let him know that he was looking elsewhere for a suitable site for his Sanatorium. Herr Scmider was politely regretful until Jem revealed that No, Miss Bettany would not be relocating with him, she would be staying on to continue running the Chalet School. The information made Herr Scmider’s eyes light up, and the sight of his gleeful face made Jem want to hit him, very hard. He went so far as to imagine the scene before him, and the picture of Herr Scmider on the ground in front of him clutching a bloody nose was so vivid that it took him some time to realise that it was, in fact, just a dream.

*****

There was still time to kill before his train left for Spartz and thence onwards to Innsbruck. Jem slowly walked some of the mountain paths he had covered with Madge during the past week. As if the very thought of her name had conjured her up, he could feel her presence beside him. He found it strangely comforting, so made no immediate move to dispel the image, instead examining it dispassionately, wondering just what it was about her that made her so hard to forget. She was, he supposed, more than passable on the looks front but her face was too full of character to make any strong claims to true beauty, but it was that very same thing that attracted him most. For those with the eyes to see it, the very essence of Madge was there. Her honesty – he knew to his cost that she would never lie to him – her strength and determination. How many women did he know that could calmly take on the challenge of uprooting themselves from the only real home they had known, turning down the option of settling for a comfortable, convenient marriage for the chance of forging their own destiny? None that he could think of. Then there was her compassion. Without complaint she had taken charge not only of her own future, but that of her small sister, as well as Juliet and the Robin as well, and she was prepared to do whatever was necessary in order to secure that future. He may not necessarily like the method she had chosen to safeguard that future – like most men he had always imagined the woman he eventually gave his heart to would be pure and touchingly ready to be initiated in their marital duties by their indulgent and more experienced husbands - but he couldn’t deny the truth of her words. How many times had he heard men of his ilk complain bitterly that the marriage bed was a cold and lonely place, where duty rather than desire too often held sway? At least he knew that this would never be a concern with Madge.

His immediate and violent reaction to the look of glee on Herr Scmider’s face when he learned that there was no longer a rival for Madge’s attentions had made it clear to Jem that he had been fooling himself in thinking he could simply walk away from Madge. Now he admitted for the first time that he did care, and he did want a permanent relationship with her, however impossible such a relationship might be. But he was afraid, afraid that he might not have enough to offer her, to tempt her into agreeing to be his wife. What compensation could he give for her loss of independence? He could give her his heart – but would that be enough?

It doesn't mean the same here! An ex-colleague of mine who was visiting relations in Australia came down late for tea because she'd dropped one of her earrings and'd been hunting everywhere for it, said she was sorry she'd been late but she'd lost an earring and'd been rooting around in the bedroom for ages, and was met with stunned silence ... and had no idea why until someone explained  .

Much as Frau Berlin would have enjoyed whiling the rest of the afternoon away with Stefan, who once he had realised that resistance was futile had found he had actually quite enjoyed the process of assimilation, she never allowed pleasure to interfere with business. So revived and refreshed by the encounter as well as the best part of the first bottle of Schnapps, she bade a reluctant farewell to Stefan, having firstly tucked a very large tip in his very small thong.

Sliding once more into her cool, silk frock, Bertha Berlin contemplated her next move. All things considered –and total idiot though he undoubtedly was – she supposed she should call upon Flopsy Marani and see if he had finally managed to come up with any information on the new brothel. She hoped for his sake that he did…..

*****

It can only be a matter of speculation how long it would have taken Dr Jem to summon up the courage to lay hand and heart before Madge but in the event he was handed a lifeline when he called back at the hotel to book his old room for a few more days. The receptionist greeted him with a smile and handed him a bundle of letters that had arrived that morning. The top one was from the friend to whom he had sent Joey’s story. He gave whoop and hastily ripped it open. Quickly he scanned the contents and once at the end, gave a little cry of satisfaction. Joey had won a prize! He would take the letter straight round to the School now, and if he didn’t take advantage of this opportunity to speak to Madge then his name wasn’t James Russell!

Forgetting to book the room again, Jem hurried along the well worn path to the school. As he did so, he nearly bumped into a very large lady clad in voluminous billows of pink silk which provided a rather unfortunate contrast to the rather purple red of her overheated face. At the determined expression on her face, he hastily stepped aside and let her past. He spared a moment to pity whatever poor wretch had engendered that particular expression, and then his mind drifted back to his more immediate concerns – just what was he going to say to Madge.

****

Madge greeted him pleasantly enough, but with an air of detachment that vanished completely once she read the letter in Jem’s hand.

“Oh Jem! That’s wonderful news! Joey will be thrilled!”

“Can’t we bring her in and tell her” begged Jem, catching her air of excitement and curiously anxious to see Joey’s expression when she heard the news for herself.

“Yes of course!” agreed Madge and sent for her young sister.

Joey greeted Jem with some reserve at first, which puzzled the doctor. He still had not realised just how close the two sisters were, and although Madge had said nothing to Joey about his offer and her own rejection of the same, Joey had sensed her sister’s unhappiness, and had known with the sixth sense she had where her beloved sister was concerned, that it was to do with Jem. However, as she read the letter and took it the news it contained, all reserve vanished and she raised disbelieving eyes to the doctor. “I’ve won a prize! Second prize! Oh Madge, the five pounds is mine!”

“I’m so proud of you Joey Baba” said Madge gently, holding out her arms to her sister. Joey gave another disbelieving cry and flung herself into them, giving way to a most unusual bout of tears.

It took some time to settle Joey once more, and even longer before Madge felt her recovered enough to return to the others. All this time, Jem waited, increasingly anxious about what he was to say and how it was to be received.

Alone at last, Jem cleared his throat nervously. “Madge… I was wondering… well hoping really …. that you might consider.. I mean I know it’s a lot to ask you.. and you may not want to of course …but ….Oh Hell! Madge will you marry me?.”

Well we are leaving for the airport at 2 am but I wanted to post this before I went. Thank you everyone for being so nice about this. I've loved writing it. Now I suppose it's back to Rosalie.....

The vision in pink that was Frau Berlin had now found its way to the Marani household and was busily interrogating the master of the household.

He had sadly admitted defeat in the matter of any definite information gathering, but in the course of relating a highly edited version of his investigations (he decided not to regale her with the full tragedy of his abortive attempts at espionage – particularly as he still had nightmares about Hans and his pitchfork) he unknowingly revealed that all of his latter leads had focused in and around the Chalet School.

“And where is this Chalet School to be found?” demanded Frau Berlin who had picked up this point immediately. Whilst many unwary observers tended to dismiss Frau Berlin as a nonentity, apparently believing that her surplus body tissue had somehow first been removed in from her brain, one did not run the brothels of Northern Europe – at a profit mind! – without having more than enough pennies to make a shiny sixpence.

Herr Marani gaped at her.

“Come on Flopsy! Use whatever brains the Good Lord gave you for once! It’s obvious. Whoever is running this unauthorised brothel, is doing so from that school. Now how do I find it?”

******

“Yes” said Madge, simply “I’d like that very much.” And waited.

She was not disappointed. Jem unable to hide either his joy, or his relief, at her answer, swept her romantically into his arms and proceeded to kiss her - very thoroughly.

“Do you think you will be satisfied with just me?” Jem just had to ask the question “I mean I know you enjoyed your job. At least I’m assuming that there will be just me?” he finished, a bit more uncertainly.

Madge thought carefully about the best way to answer Jem’s question. He was evidently – and understandably – in need of reassurance from her and she was wise enough to give it immediately.

“I can’t deny mindless sex has its advantages,” she began truthfully as usual, but added quickly “But honestly darling, you are more than enough man for me!”

Her answer did indeed satisfy Jem to the extent that it was quite some time before they came to their common or garden senses. Eventually, however, real life intruded on their idyll, as it inevitably must.

“What am I going to do about the brothel Jem?” asked Madge, who, reluctant though she was to risk her future happiness, needed to know if he had really thought this through. With the best will in the world, it would be impossible for her to turn her back on the girls who had trusted her to take care of them, but she quite saw that as head of a sanatorium, Jem’s personal life – and therefore that of his immediate family – needed to be above reproach. And also, although her reassurance had set his mind at rest for now, her continued involvement in the business must always be a worry to him.

“I don’t know Sweetheart, I really don’t. Maybe something will turn up?” he added hopefully. Madge just looked at him.

*****

Just at that moment, the door to the study crashed open – and in burst a vision in pink silk, followed closely by Herr Marani who was making ineffectual efforts to prevent the lady from entering the room. He was impatiently batted aside and a huge bellowing voice demanded “Right! Who is the Madam in charge? Flopsy – I swear if you get in my way one more time, I’ll twist that thing of yours in so many knots you’ll still be trying to untangle it next week!”

“That would be me” said Madge quietly, and she moved into plain view, Jem having obscured her until now.

Frau Berlin came to a shuddering halt as she caught sight of Madge “You!” she exclaimed. “It was you!” and on the word she resumed her charge, but this time her goal was to embrace her saviour. Madge disappeared briefly inside that enormous bosom, but before she stood in any real danger of suffocation, Frau Berlin let her go, to look in disbelief at the face of the woman who had saved her life, but who was also the rival she had come to see closed down – permanently.

****

Was it a divine providence that had put Frau Berlin in such deadly danger that day in the train? Or was it simply Madge’s guardian angel looking out for her? Whatever was the true explanation, the result was that a potentially very difficult situation was actually resolved very quickly and to the great satisfaction of all parties. Full of gratitude for her rescue, Frau Berlin not only offered a handsome sum to takeover the brothel, but was also prepared to offer Madge’s girls a choice between guaranteed continued employment under its new management or a generous redundancy package. All were agreed that the brothel’s continuing proximity to the school was not ideal, and on Jem informing Frau Berlin of his decision to build a new sanatorium up in the mountains (complete with lots of lonely doctors) it was decided to relocate forthwith. On being consulted, Herr Braun was agreeable to the changes, and made plans for a regular transport link to be installed between the hotel and the new building as soon as possible.

And so that was that. Everyone lived happily ever after. Even Herr Marani, as Madge prevailed upon Frau Berlin to forget in perpetuity his little foible – on the understanding of course that he continued to keep his mouth shut. And isn’t happily ever after the way all good fairytales end?

*****

There was a silence in the little hospital room as Joey – for indeed the speaker had been Joey Bettany herself, although for many, many years now Joey Maynard – finished her story and waited for the reaction from her visitor.

“I see you haven’t lost your touch Joey!” exclaimed Nancy Wilmot, current headmistress of the School that Joey’s sister had founded so long ago as she got up to go. Goodness had she been here that long already. Time to get back to the Chalet School. She bid Joey an affectionate farewell and began the long walk back to the School. Such a strange story, she thought. It couldn’t be true, could it? She wondered doubtfully. And then she thought of Madge Russell – Lady Russell – that sweet woman, as everyone called her, and laughed at herself for ever entertaining such a silly notion!

The End
