Thanks everyone for your encouragement and positive feedback on my first drabble. I'm afraid I'm leaving Tony to one side at present, though the idea of him and Rosalie is intriguing!

This is a continuation of an idea I had for the Christmas communal drabble, but never had time to develop. What happened to that drabble, by the way, as it just seemed to disappear off the radar? Possibly like me, everyone just got too busy to contribute.

This drabble is loosely set in the winter term when Len was Head Girl. Apologies for any glaring errors. Please pm me and I'll correct them soonest.

Am I right in thinking that was the term when Hilda went off on her world tour researching education methods?

~+~

One winter night, the occupants of Gentian dorm were awoken by strange noises coming from the corner where the cupboard containing their dresses stood.

To their amazement, they saw a young girl emerge, dressed in an enormous fur coat. It is true that it had snowed heavily during the day. Indeed, they had been overjoyed, because the snow had come early this year and they were hoping that they would be able to go skiing and tobogganing once it had settled and hardened.

However, to wear a fur coat in the dorm, which was very well heated, seemed to be a little over the top. Besides, where had she come from?

'Who are you?' asked Jack, as dorm prefect. 'And where did you come from?'

'I was playing hide and seek with the others. And I decided to hide in the wardrobe. I was cold, so I put the coat on, but where is Mr Tumnus? Has the wicked queen got him? He was scared that she would send her wolves after him. He was so kind to me; he gave me tea and everything. But I don't understand why I am here. I need to find him.'

'I never heard of a Mr Tumnus,' said Jack. 'We certainly don't have a master by that name.'

'What is this place?' asked Lucy.

'It's the Chalet School and it's the middle of the night,' said Jack. If you want to stay, there's a spare bed, because Jos is in the San with a bad cold. Then we can look for your Mr Tumnus in the morning,' she added, being a kind-hearted girl, who saw Lucy's distress about someone who was obviously close to her, although he did have a weird name. And what was all this about wicked queens and wolves?

Lucy undressed and climbed into bed gratefully. For in truth she had found the fur coat far too hot and she was very tired.......

Jack, who was equally tired, gave up on the conundrum of who Lucy was and where she had come from and slept soundly until the rising bell next morning.

Edited once as I suddenly remembered that Prefects was not set in the winter term.

Edited a second time, as I think heavy snow before Christmas would be early, rather than late.

Feeling rather sorry for Lucy, really. The CS can't possibly be as fun as Narnia. Plus the Witch might win. Unless she manages to take some of the girls to Narnia with her... hm, hm....

I think the only answer is to request more please, soon! :D

Thanks for your encouragement. If you've read the Narnia books or seen the films, you may recognise some of the incidents that follow, although I've taken a few liberties with the characters and haven't stuck to one book in the series.

~+~

Next morning, Lucy was woken by the loud clanging of the school bell.

'You'd better take Jos' turn with the bathroom, which makes you first,' said Jack. 'Come on, I'll show you what to do.'

Lucy did not enjoy her cold bath and could not see the point, since there seemed to be plenty of hot water. The bathroom in the Professor's house had been vast with an old-fashioned bathtub and the only way to have a hot bath was for huge jugs of hot water to be brought up from the kitchens.

'All done?' said Jack. 'Oh my, you can't leave your cubey like this. Matey will be on the warpath. Let me help you.' Together they tidied the cubey and humped the mattress, so that it would meet Matey's high standards.

By the time they had done this, the bell for Fruhstuck was ringing, so Jack pushed Lucy into line with the others and they all marched down to the Speisesaal. Lucy was slightly surprised that no one questioned why she was there, but when she looked at herself more closely, she realised that she was wearing the same uniform as everyone else. In fact, she looked just like a Chalet School girl.

To tell the truth, Lucy was secretly thrilled by this, as she had always had a longing to go to school like this one, but she and her siblings had been sent to a horrible school where the other pupils made fun of their accents and quite often they were bullied. She only survived because her brother Edmund stuck up for her. In fact, he often got into trouble on her behalf, because he got into fights when he was defending her.

But how could she get back into Narnia to help Mr Tumnus? She had heard that there were gateways into Narnia from different places. Perhaps there was one somewhere near the Chalet School?

Lucy decided that her best plan would be to search for the gateway. She would need some help. Jack seemed sympathetic, but she was a few years older than Lucy.

Erica Standish and Althea Glenyon were feeling a bit lost without Jocelyn Marvel. They had become firm friends since Jocelyn had joined the school that term. Jocelyn was a natural leader and the other two tended to follow her. Currently, Jocelyn was in the San with a bad cold, so the other two found themselves at something of a loose end.

Erica was also in Gentian dorm, so had seen Lucy' unorthodox entry into the school the night before. Today being a Saturday, they had more free time than during the week, but of course, they could not go outside because the weather was so bad. After breakfast, they went upstairs to complete their morning chores.

When Erica entered Gentian, Lucy was examining the cupboard through which she had entered the night before. 'I do believe this could be the gateway,' she said.

'Gateway to where?' asked Erica.

'To Narnia, of course! Come on,' said Lucy. Grabbing Erica by the arm and pulling her along.

To Erica's surprise, the back of the cupboard was no longer there. Instead, she found herself following Lucy out into a place she had never seen before.

Here is the next bit. May be able to write some more later today. Glad you'r enjoying this.

~+~

The first thing she saw was an old fashioned lamp post. Beyond that were woods, which spread as far as the eye could see. And deep snow. Although Erica was used to snow in Switzerland, she had never seen such wholesale snow before. It looked as if it had been there for ever.

'Come on,' cried Lucy. 'Mr Tumnus' house is this way.'

Seeing no alternative, Erica followed Lucy along the path. Presently, they came to a little house, which had obviously been well cared for, but had recently been ransacked.

'Oh no,' cried Lucy. 'The wicked queen, or her police, they got him, I knew I should have stayed to help him.'

'Who is the wicked queen?' asked Erica with interest.

'Her name's Jadis and she claims to be Queen of Narnia, but she's an imposter. Aslan is the real king. It's her fault that it's always winter here. And Christmas never comes! Can you imagine that?' explained Lucy.

Needless to say, Erica understood very little of Lucy's explanation, as she had never even heard of Narnia before. She decided, however, that since Lucy had been here before, she had better go along with her for now. Besides, who knew where she might finish up, if she tried to get back to the school through the cupboard?

Lucy and Erica continued along the path. Suddenly, they heard the sound of sleigh bells. 'Quick,' said Lucy, 'behind this tree. We don't know who's coming and we don't want to be caught by Jadis. I heard she sometimes comes this way.'

Sure enough, when the girls looked out from behind the tree, they saw a big sleigh, pulled by a dwarf. The seat was covered with furs to keep its occupant warm. The occupant was a tall, stately woman with a cruel face. Somehow, you could tell from looking at her that she was not a nice person to know. In her hand was a whip, which she cracked over the dwarf's shoulder from time to time, encouraging him to go faster.

Fortunately, she did not see the girls, as she only had eyes for the rubble, which was all that remained of poor Mr Tumnus' little house. 'Let that be a lesson to all who oppose me,' she cackled. 'I am the ruler of Narnia and I will be obeyed. Traitors will perish.'

'Oh, no,' said Lucy. 'Poor Mr Tumnus. We must find him.'

'But it sounds as if he's already dead,' said Erica. 'Besides, don't you think we should be getting back to school? We've been here for hours. Someone must have missed us by now.'

At that moment, Lucy saw movement in the trees. What or who was that? Enemy or friend?

Here is the next instalment. As I said, I have taken some liberties with the characters and books of the original Narnia series, even though I love them!

~+~

The movement Lucy saw was only a small one, because it was made by a small animal. A mouse to be precise, but a mouse brandishing a very large sword.

'Who goes there?' squeaked the mouse, in a surprisingly large voice. 'Who dares to enter Narnia, land of the great lion Aslan?'

'You must be Reepicheep,' said Lucy. Eustace told me all about you.

'You know Eustace?' the mouse said in some suprise.

'Yes he's my cousin. I know he's been to Narnia. So have I, but at an earlier time than him. I'm Queen Lucy.'

Reepicheep, for it was indeed him, prescribed a deep bow. 'A thousand apologies, your Majesty. But I have been sent to investigate Mr Tumnus' disappearance, and we can't take any chances.'

'Of course not,' said Lucy. 'I quite understand. By the way, this is my friend Erica.'

'Another daughter of Eve. Welcome to Narnia,' said Reepicheep.

'Er, thank you, replied Erica, who was a little overcome by all that had happened and not too sure how to converse with a talking mouse.

'We just saw Jadis. She came to admire her henchmen's work,' said Lucy.

'Yes, I heard the sleigh bells in the distance, so I knew it was safe to come,' said Reepicheep. 'And since you two are here \at the same time, it's obvious that Aslan sent you to help me.'

'Who is Aslan? In any case, we can't stay, we have to get back to school.' said Erica, who unlike Lucy, had not yet learned that whilst many years may pass in Narnia, that may be happen in only a few minutes of time in our world.

'Aslan is King of Narnia. He's a lion, but not just any lion. He is not a tame lion. When you meet him, you will understand.'

Erica was not at all sure that she wanted to meet Aslan. He sounded even more scary than Bill at her worst!

'In any case,' said Lucy. 'If Aslan has brought us here, we won't be able to go back until our task is finished.'

'Come with me,' said Reepicheep. 'I think I know where Jadis has taken Mr Tumnus.'

The trio tramped for several hours through the woods, On the way, Erica could have sworn that she saw a shadow following them, but it was a vague shape. Almost like a lion. She preferred not to think about it and did not say anything to any of the others.

Eventually, night began to fall, so Reepicheep decided that they should make beds for themselves in the woods. Being a guide, Erica was good at making fires, so they could at least keep warm. They found a cave, where they could shelter and settled down for the night.

At first Erica found it difficult to settle on the hard ground. She was just dropping off to sleep when she heard a low voice calling her name: 'Erica. Erica.'

She looked around, but could not see anyone in the darkness. Lucy and Reepicheep seemed to have gone to sleep as soon as their heads touched their makeshift pillows.

Besides, this voice had a different quality to it. It was deep and full of authority. She reluctantly got up and went outside.

Thanks for your positive feedback and comments. Especially from you sealpuppy.

This post describes an alternative history of Narnia that does not, I guarantee, appear anywhere in the CS Lewis books, so don't go looking for it! :D

As Abi already realised, I've had to rewrite part of the history of Narnia to please my plot bunny, who insisted that Reepicheep should appear in this drabble. (Absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he's one of my favourite characters of course.)

So here goes, with apologies to CS Lewis, who fortunately is long since dead, as I would not claim to be even half the writer that he was. Did you know, by the way, that Lewis died on the same day that President JF Kennedy was shot in Dallas? (A piece of interesting, but almost totally useless trivia!).

~+~

Many years (in Narnia time) before this story opens, as those who have read the Chronicles of Narnia will know, Lucy and her siblings Peter, Susan and Edmund, had entered \Narna for the first time through a magical wardrobe in the house of an old Professor with whom they were staying. They had many adventures in Narnia and were crowned Kings and Queens. They lived there happily for many years before returning to their own land through the wardrobe, where they found that only a short time had passed in their world.

At the beginning of the Chronicles, it is recorded how Jadis tried to take Narnia by force. She was not a popular queen, as she caused a never-ending winter with no Christmas. But she ruled with an iron fist through her secret police and a system of spies throughout the land.

You can read elsewhere of how she was finally defeated and Aslan was restored to his rightful place as King of Narnia. Over the following generations, the people went through times of rebellion and as time went by, the siblings and others were called back into Narnia to help out in time of crisis. This is how Reepicheep met Edmund.

For a long time the people of Narnia and the surrounding lands were content to have Aslan as their king and there was peace in the land. But at the time when this story opens, he had not been seen in the land for many years, and there were even rumours that he had deserted Narnia, never to return, although no one knew for certain how those rumours had started.

Jadis (for it was indeed the same false queen, whom Lucy and her siblings had fought in the beginning) reappeared in the land. The centuries had not dimmed her ambition to be ruler of Narnia, and in Aslan's absence, she made her move. Because she had not been seen in the land for many centuries, most people had assumed that she was long dead, but they were soon to discover their mistake. No one knew where she had been in the intervening centuries, but she was of a race that lived long.

So, Jadis returned to Narnia and with her came the endless winter without Christmas. As before, there were pockets of resistance amongst the talking animals, but her secret police were ruthless in searching out and destroying those who dared to oppose her.

Mr Tumnus was the 26 times great grandson of the original Mr Tumnus – the eldest son of each generation bore this name as a tribute to their most illustrious ancestor. And as the story opens, he has been very active in the resistance to the queen and he may join his famous ancestor in family folklore as the hero who fought the wicked queen and (we hope) won.

Lucy herself was a great-grandmother of 12 in the 'real world' by this time. But, as we have noted, time operates differently in Narnia. One night, Aslan appeared to her in a dream, telling her that Narnia needed her help again and she knew that she could not refuse. By some magic that she did not understand, she found herself a young girl again, stepping out of the clothes' cupboard in Gentian dorm at the Chalet School.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'm glad you're enjoying this, as it's such fun to write!

Just a short update tonight, as I'm too tired to write any more, and it's a natural break in the story.

~+~

Outside the cave, it was a moonlit night with a sky full of stars, so it was not completely dark. And amongst the trees, a little way ahead, Erica could see a faint glow. The voice seemed to be coming from that direction, so she picked her way carefully through the trees until she came to a small clearing.

In the clearing, there was a fire, the glow of which she had seen from a distance and standing by the fire was the largest lion that Erica had ever seen. She felt she should feel afraid, yet there was something reassuring about his presence. She sensed his majesty, but at the same time, his concern reaching out to her.

'Do not be afraid, daughter of Eve,' he said in a deep voice. 'I have waited a long time for this moment.'

'But I never heard of Narnia before I came here. I don't understand.'

'Soon you will grow to understand. The ways of Narnia are not the ways of your world. And people in your world seek answers that they will only find here,' said Aslan. For of course it was he.

'But I only came because Lucy brought me.' said Erica.

'No one comes to Narnia unless I call them,' said Aslan. 'I have brought you here, because without your help, Lucy and Reepicheep cannot accomplish their task and rescue Mr Tumnus.'

'Lucy thinks he's dead,' said Erica.

'Lucy does not know everything. Especially not the challenges that lie ahead before you can complete the task. I have called you here tonight to warn you. Remember, that whilst Jadis rules Narnia, nothing and no one is what they seem. Friends may turn out to be enemies and enemies friends. Be very careful whom you trust.'

'Do you mean Reepicheep?' asked Erica.

'That I cannot tell you. You must work it out for yourself. But remember that if someone is a enemy, they will show their true colours sooner or later. Now you must go back to sleep, because you have a long day ahead tomorrow.'

Erica returned to the cave, where the other two were still sleeping. To her surprise, once she settled down again, she fell asleep very quickly.

Post subject:  Re: Lucy goes to the Chalet School -Updated 9/2/10

Reepicheep, friend or foe? You'll have to wait and see. But keep guessing! :halo:

~+~

The next morning the trio were up early and breakfasted on bread and cheese provided by Reepicheep plus water from a nearby stream, which, he assured the girls, it was safe to drink.

If she was honest, Erica thought that the breakfast was not quite as good as the milky coffee and bread rolls with honey on which they feasted at the Chalet School, but she was hungry and thirsty and they had a long day ahead of them, so she ate and drank her fill. 'Besides,' she thought. 'I'll soon be back at school, once we've found Mr Tumnus.' It's probably just as well that she had no idea of the adventures that still lay ahead of them.

After their meal, they set out again, guided by Reepicheep. From what Erica could tell without a compass, they seemed to be heading in a westerly direction. For several hours they continued to tramp through the woods with no change in the landscape. At length, the trees began to thin out and they could see a hill with a castle on top. It was a very ugly-looking building, even from a distance, so the girls were not really surprised when Reepicheep pointed this out to them as their goal – Jadis' castle.

Erica had not told the others about her night-time experience and in the cold light of day, she wondered whether it had all been a dream. However, it seemed to real for that. She found herself looking askance at Reepicheep and wondering whether he was really all that he seemed to be. Lucy seemed to have no problems in accepting him as the mouse who had fought so valiantly alongside Eustace, and she had far more experience of Narnia than Erica did, but Erica still wondered. She knew that all she could do was to take Aslan's advice and be on guard at all times.

Eventually, they came to the edge of the woods. They would have to cross a stretch of open land in order to reach the foot of the hill. From there, it was quite a steep climb to the top, which Erica hoped she was equal to. Having done a fair amount of climbing and rambling since coming to the Chalet School, she was fairly sure she could cope, but she didn't want to let herself, Lucy (or Aslan) down.

Since the coast appeared to be clear, they set off across the open space. Suddenly, there was the sound of sleigh bells and Jadis' sleigh, drawn as usual by a dwarf, appeared. 'Get them,' she cackled. 'They shall not reach my castle.'

At this command, several dwarves and goblins appeared as if from nowhere and surrounded Reepicheep and the girls.

Lucy looked round frantically. 'Come on,' she said. 'I think we can escape this way.'

Out of the corner of her eye, Lucy had seen a small gap in the ring surrounding them, as the dwarves were too scared of Jadis to get too close to her sleigh. As they dashed through the gap, Jadis grabbed Erica by the arm, but was unable to stop her because she was trying to get out of her sleigh at the same time.

'Come on!' said Lucy. 'I can see a gateway out of here.'

She was right. A few yards ahead, they could see a hole in the base of the hill. They rushed towards it, Jadis, off-balance, being half-dragged behind them.

They entered the gateway and found themselves

Well, since you all asked so nicely. But I don't think you can complain too much about cliffs, as I learnt the art from the masters - you!

Since it's very quiet at work this afternoon and the boss is away, I decided to take pity on you and write the next bit.

~+~

Lucy and Erica, along with Jadis, went through the gateway and found themselves in the Speisesaal of the Chalet School, where Mittagessen was in full swing.

'Oh, goody,' said Lucy, 'I'm hungry.' She went to the table where she had eaten on her previous visit, which in Chalet School time, was just a few hours before. She sat down and started to tuck into Karen's excellent soup and crusty bread.

Erica followed her with some difficulty, as Jadis was still clinging tightly to her arm.

'Why are you so late, girls?' called Miss Wilmot from her place at the Staff table. 'And who is your ... friend?' She hesitated slightly on the last word, because in truth she had never met anyone quite like Jadis before.

'I am Jadis, the true Queen of Narnia,' proclaimed Jadis in a loud voice, letting go of Erica's arm and brandishing her sceptre, which she had somehow managed to bring with her from Narnia in spite of all the struggles.

That's a very pretty name and unusual,' thought Len, who was supervising the Junior table. 'I must tell Mamma. She'll want to use it in her next book.'

Lucy and Erica apologised for their lateness, saying they had been in the garden and not heard the gong. Although this was unlikely, fortunately, no one took much notice because all eyes were focussed on Jadis.

She stood there in the middle of the Speisesaal and asked: 'Where is this?'

'You are at the Chalet School,' answered Miss Wilmot. 'i don't know who you are or where you came from, but you are welcome to join us in our meal, if you wish.'

'Bring me a table and some food,' Jadis ordered Ted Grantley, who happened to be in charge of the table closest to her.

'I'm afraid I can't allow you to order my prefects around like that, even if you are Queen of ... Marmia, was it?' said Miss Wilmot, who had no idea where that country was, but thought perhaps it might be somewhere in Africa, because those countries were always declaring independence and getting new names for themselves. 'We set great store by good manners here at the Chalet School and our prefects carry a lot of responsibility, so we expect everyone, including visitors, to treat them with respect.'

'You will show due respect to me,' declared Jadis. 'I am the Queen and those who defy me will suffer the consequences.

At this point, Matey decided it was time she took a hand. She approached Jadis with the intention of directing her towards a free seat on the Staff table. However, when she touched Jadis' arm, Jadis struck out at her with her sceptre and turned her into a toad.

Everyone was dumbstruck by this, except for Matey, who hopped around the Speisesaal floor croaking loudly and indignantly.

Maybe I should have called this drabble 'Mayhem in the Speisesaal'?! Who needs a plot bunny with CBBers on hand to give me ideas? :D

Friday afternoon and I'm bored, so what better way to spend it than writing some more. Quiet weekend apart from cleaning and shopping tomorrow and church on Sunday, so I may be able to post some then. I'm pleased I've kept up to one a day so far, though it probably means I'm spending more time writing this than I should.

Someone else could probably have written this scene more powerfully, but this is how it came out.

~+~

Suddenly, the door opened and Bill and Joey entered the Speisesaal. Bill had had a free morning for once, so had come down to Freudesheim to visit Joey and stayed to lunch. At the sight which met their eyes, their jaws dropped to the floor.

'What is the meaning of all this?' demanded Bill in an even louder voice than Jadis. 'And who dared to bring a toad into the Speisesaal?' she added, as Matey hopped up to her and croaked at her beseechingly. 'Get that thing out of here at once. If this is the Middles' latest, I'm not at all amused.'

'That,' said Jadis, 'is the human, whom I believe you call 'Matey' She dared to touch my person and that was her reward.'

'And who might you be?' asked Bill.

'I am Jadis, the rightful queen of Narnia. And all those who defy me must pay the consequences.'

'What a lovely name,' said Joey at this point. 'And so unusual. I would love to use it in my next book.'

'I am Jadis. I am unique. There is no one like me and never shall be. How dare you take my name in vain!' With these words, Jadis brandished her sceptre once more and Joey was instantly turned to stone.

Now Bill's grasp of geography was considerably better than Miss Wilmot's, yet even she had never heard of Narnia. However, this last was too much even for her.

She realised that it was futile to tackle Jadis physically, as that was liable to get her turned into a toad, or stone or something else equally unpleasant.

At the same time she noticed that Jadis was becoming more and more pale and that her body was slumping. The reason for this was that, as soon as she left Narnia, the strength of her magic began to diminish and she had expended considerable energy in dealing with Matey and Joey.

'How did Jadis get here?' Bill asked.

'She came with us,' said Erica and Lucy.

'Go back to where you have come from,' commanded Bill. 'And leave us in peace, for we mean you no harm.'

'I know not how to return to my own land,' Jadis said in a weak voice.

'We will help you,' chorused Lucy and Erica immediately.

They took Jadis up to Gentian dormitory and into the clothes' cupboard. Sure enough, they were able to re-enter Narnia that way, because Aslan opened the gateway for them. However, the strange thing was that, when Lucy and Erica looked round fearfully, Jadis had gone. By that special sort of magic that operates in Narnia, Jadis had been removed to her castle and the girls were back in the woods, near the cave where they had spent the night. Reepicheep was there waiting for them.

Back at the Chalet School, the magic of Narnia wore off after a couple of hours, as it tends to do in our world. So Matey and Joey returned to their normal selves. However, it has to be said that there was more than one person in the school who wished that they could have stayed in their enchanted state for longer, if not permanently.

Reepicheep and the girls set off once more through the woods towards Jadis' castle. Lucy seemed quite happy to go with him, but Erica, mindful of Aslan's warning, wondered whether he could, somehow, have been involved in the queen's ambush.

This time, however, their journey to the foot of the hill went without a hitch and they began to climb. Having been on lots of rambles with the Chalet School, Erica was not too challenged by this route, but Lucy seemed a little out of condition and they had to stop occasionally to rest for her sake. At each stop, they took a drink from a large flask of Karen's patent fruit drink, which Erica had insisted on bringing from the Chalet School. For a reason that she couldn't understand, she felt that it could come in useful. Not wanting to take any risks, she insisted on carrying it herself in her backpack.

Eventually, they reached the grounds of the castle. 'We need to be careful,' said Reepicheep. 'If Jadis is around, we will have no chance of rescuing Mr Tumnus.'

The coast appeared to be clear, so they went into the courtyard, which was full of stone figures; fauns, centaurs, and all kinds of talking animals were represented.

'How can we help them?' asked Erica. 'There must be something that counteracts Jadis' magic.'

'On my last visit, I was given a special potion which healed people and reversed this kind of magic. But it was given to me by Father Christmas, and we haven't seen him on this visit.' said Lucy.

'There must be something we can do,' said Erica. 'Have you seen Mr Tumnus yet?'

'He's over here,' shouted Lucy in excitement. 'I just had an idea. Maybe Karen's fruit drink will revive them. Perhaps it was Aslan who prompted you to bring it from the Chalet School, as there's no other reason why you should have done so.'

'It's certainly worth a try,' said Erica, taking out the flask. She allowed a few drops to fall into the open mouth of Mr Tumnus, and sure enough, life began to return to his body as the magic was reversed.

Excitedly, the girls ran round the statues, bringing the animals back to life.

They were so engrossed in their task, that they did not notice that Reepicheep had slipped away. Until, that is, they heard a loud cackle and a voice said: 'Well done, Roopichoop, you have brought the daughters of Eve back to me. Now I can have my revenge on Aslan.'

I do not claim originality for this twist, as there are lots of literary precedents, including one in the Narnia series, IIRC. However, I have to admit that my version owes more to Star Trek:TNG than to CS Lewis!

Sorry, Abi, another rewrite of Narnia's history. Having borrowed a copy of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, this post also allows me to correct a couple of inconsistencies that have crept into this current account, as I realise that Edmund and Lucy were also involved in that book, besides Eustace. Any further inconsistencies can be put down to the fact that this is an alternative history of Narnia!

~+~

To explain current events, it is necessary once again to delve into the history of Narnia. Reepicheep is well recorded there as one of its heroes. What most of the history books fail to mention, however, is that he was in fact a twin. The main reason for this is, perhaps, that the family tried to keep it quiet, because the two boys were as different as chalk and cheese.

When they were children, Reepicheep was far from perfect, but he always told the truth about his mischief, whereas Roopichoop lied and tried to blame his brother for his wrongdoings. In truth, they were so alike in appearance that it was often difficult even for their parents to tell them apart, but as they grew older, the difference in their characters became more obvious and so it was easier to distinguish them.

Reepicheep grew up to take his rightful place in the army of Talking Mice, the most important of regiments amongst the talking animals, for his family could trace their ancestry right back to the mice who tried to gnaw through the ropes which bound Aslan to the stone table on that great day when Jadis was originally defeated.

If he had chosen to do so, Roopichoop could also have found fame as a hero of Narnia. However, he was intensely jealous of his brother and so he listened to the darker side of his soul and joined the opposing side instead. During the years of peace that followed, he kept himself hidden, although he was a member of an underground resistance to Aslan's rule, which never quite accepted him a King. From time to time, there were rumours of assassinations of important people, and some of them were down to Roopichoop.

In recent years, with Aslan being absent from the land and Jadis once more in power, the resistance no longer needed to stay hidden and they worked openly alongside the queen and her supporters. Roopichoop had himself led the raid on Mr Tumnus' house, a fact of which he was very proud, as it showed how much Jadis had grown to trust him. That was why he had been in the area when the girls arrived and he had had to devise a story quickly to explain his presence there.

This also explained why he failed to recognise Lucy and she, initially, failed to recognise him. For of course they had never met before and Lucy instinctively felt that there was something not quite right, even though the two mice were to all appearances identical.

When Jadis spoke so confidently of the girls now being in her power, she forgot one important factor in the equation: the talking animals and other creatures whom Lucy and Erica had liberated. They had no intention of allowing Jadis to continue as the usurper. For the moment they could do very little except make sure that Lucy and Erica got away safely. Their numbers were such that easily overcame the small number of guard that accompanied Jadis. Erica and Lucy were both hoisted on board a centaur and had a thrilling ride down the hill to safety.

'But what do we do now?' asked Erica. 'Surely we can't leave Jadis to rule Narnia?'

The talking animals and other creatures fully agreed with this and they discussed long into the night what the solution might be.

'If only Aslan were here,' said Mr Tumnus. 'He would sort out Jadis for sure.'

'I've seen Aslan,' said Erica shyly. 'He appeared to me the night we were in the cave.'

'What did he tell you?' asked Lucy.

'That we must trust no one and nothing was what it seemed in Narnia under Jadis.'

'Well that was certainly true of Reepicheep, or should I say Roopichoop!' said Lucy with feeling. 'Though I'm very glad that it wasn't him in the end,' she added in some confusion.

'I wonder what happened to the real Reepicheep,' mused Erica. 'If his brother is still alive, then maybe he is too.'

'I wish I knew,' said Lucy. 'I'm sure he could help us right now, but the last I heard of him, he was sailing off to the world's end.'

The long discussions reached no conclusions that night and so everyone eventually retired to bed. In the middle of the night, Erica again heard a voice calling her name. This time, she got up immediately and made her way to the edge of the clearing where most of them were sleeping round a fire.

She was not really surprised to see that it was Aslan who was calling her again. 'You have done well, so far, daughter of Eve,' said Aslan. 'But there is still more work to do before Jadis can be defeated.

'What can Lucy and I do?' asked Erica. 'Even with the support we have at the moment, we are so few against those who back Jadis and she has spies everywhere.'

'Your next task is to go in search of Reepicheep. But first, I want you to return to the Chalet School to bring more of the food and drink from that world. For it has special properties here that you never dreamed of there. As you have already seen for yourself.'

'Reepicheep is alive, then?' asked Erica.

'Oh, yes he is, but he is some miles away. And the way to where he lives is not straightforward, but Mr Tumnus shall go with you. That is why you need the provisions from your world. There is no time to be lost.'

Suddenly Erica found herself, alone, back in the Chalet School larder. All was silent, as it was night time and the school was sleeping. She gathered up as much as she could, including several bottles of Karen's patent fruit drink and some packages of sandwiches, which smelt decidedly odd. In truth, they were Joey's concoctions, which she had brought over one day, but after sampling one, no one had felt like eating more. So, they had been left at the back of one of the larder shelves. However, Erica took them, as she had a feeling they might somehow come in useful.

This done, she was whisked back to Narnia. At the school, Karen was most annoyed to discover that several bottles of her fruit drink were missing and blamed it unfairly on the newest and youngest of the maids, whose young brother hung around the school and was always hungry and thirsty. No one really missed the sandwiches, but they would probably have come to the same conclusion about those. However, I suspect that even Karl would have turned his nose up at them!

Here is the next instalment, where Erica finds the first use for Joey's sandwiches.

~+~

The next morning, Lucy and Erica set out with Mr Tumnus. Aslan had told Erica to head east, which was the direction from which the sun rose, as they all knew, but he had not given her any further instructions.

As they tramped through the woods, Erica taught Lucy and Mr Tumnus some of the guide songs she had learnt and they were soon singing along merrily as they went. After a few hours, they needed a break. They were looking round for somewhere to stop and eat, when Lucy noticed a movement in the trees.

Sure enough, there was a badger, beckoning them to follow him. ‘Can we trust him or not?’ Lucy asked the others.

The badger sensed their reluctance, and so he produced a feather. ‘This is the feather that was in Reepicheep’s hat,’ he said.

It looked like any ordinary feather, except that it had a distinctly mousey smell about it.

‘But Aslan told us that Reepicheep was still alive,’ said Mr Tumnus. ‘How can we know that the feather really came from Reepicheep’s hat? It could even have come from Roopichoop’s, for all we know, which would make you an enemy of Aslan.’

‘I believe you have some special ointment, disguised as sandwich fillings,’ said the badger.

‘How do you know about the sandwiches?’ asked Erica, in amazement, because she hadn’t even told the other two.

‘Aslan told me,’ said the badger. ‘That should be proof enough for you. But if you need more, rub some of the ointment on this feather.’

Erica did what the badger suggested. To their amazement, at that instant, an image of Reepicheep appeared. He looked very sad, not at all like his usual cheerful self. Somehow, they knew instinctively that it was Reepicheep and not Roopichoop, especially when he made a deep reverence to Lucy and spoke.

‘Greetings, Queen Lucy. How good it is to see you again in Narnia, although I regret the circumstances that have brought you here. And this must be your friend, Erica. I have heard much about her and her bravery.’

At this, Erica blushed madly, especially since she didn’t feel she had done anything to deserve being described as brave.

‘Where are you, Reepicheep?’ asked Mr Tumnus. ‘Aslan has told us to come and find you, but he gave us no clues as to where you were.’

‘All I can tell you is that I am on an island, held captive by some of Jadis’ followers. You must come to me, for I cannot come to you. You can trust the badger family; I have known them for many years and they will help you. Now, I must go.’

Reepicheep’s image faded as quickly as it had appeared. Lucy, Erica and Mr Tumnus followed the badger to his sett, where Mrs Badger had a delicious meal waiting for them. They ate and drank thankfully, because they sensed that the road ahead would be long and difficult.

What Jack never realised, because he never tested them, was that Joey's sandwich fillings had medicinal properties. Perhaps he could have used them in the San, if he had known!

Here is the next bit. Thanks for your patience and your feedback.

~+~

Mr Tumnus and the girls, along with Mr Badger, who planned to accompany them, were just about to set out again, when they heard sleigh bells outside.

'Oh, no,' said Erica. 'I hope that's not Jadis again.'

'Ho, ho, ho!' came the call from outside, as if in answer to her question.

''It's Father Christmas!' said Lucy excitedly. 'That means that Jadis' power is already on the wane, because there has been no Christmas for a long time.'

They all hurried outside to meet the old gentleman. 'Do you have any gifts for us?' asked Lucy eagerly, remembering their previous encounter.

'Only one,' said Father Christmas, 'and it is not new.' He handed over a horn.

'This is Susan's horn, I recognise it,' said Lucy.

'That is correct,' said Father Christmas. 'She no longer has need of it, so I give it to you.  Whenever you blow on this horn, help will come to you. But you must only use it in an emergency.'

'We will,' chorused Lucy and Erica.'Thank you, Father Christmas.'

'I have many more presents to deliver to good girls and boys in Narnia, so I must be off,' said Father Christmas. 'Goodbye and good luck.'

Encouraged by this encounter, the party set off in good spirits. They still had no further instructions, so they headed east, singing Erica's guide songs as they went.

Suddenly, a fox crossed their path. An exhausted, haunted fox. 'Have you seen the wolves?' he panted/

'We have seen no wolves,' said Lucy. 'Stop and rest for a while,' she added, for it was clear that the poor animal could go no further.

As the fox recovered his breath, he began to tell his story. His name was Xander Hasander and he was descended from a distinguished family of foxes, who could trace their ancestry right back to the time of High King Peter. However, like many similar families, under Jadis' rule they had fallen on hard times. Besides which, Jadis had introduced fox hunting as a sport. It was popular amongst her wolves, who often chased poor foxes for hours until they were exhausted and then tormented them for fun when they caught them.

'Xander, you must come with us,' said kind-hearted Erica. 'We are off to find Reepicheep. You can help us in our quest.'

'Thank you,' said Xander, 'I would love to, Just as long as we don't meet any of Jadis' wolves along the way.'

No one dared to answer this, as the others all had a suspicion that they would indeed encounter Jadis and her wolves before their quest was completed.

Here is the next part.

~+~

Onwards the party went, stopping only to eat and rest. As yet, they had no further indication of where they would find Reepicheep, except that he was on an island. Many years before, he had been involved in that Chronicle of Narnia known as the Voyage of the Dawn Treader in which he had sailed with Lucy, Edmund, Eustace and King Caspian to the Lone Islands. But they were many miles off the Eastern shore of Narnia. Could Reepicheep really be held captive on one of those?

They had no answer to this, so they continued eastward to Cair Paravel, a port on the Eastern shore of Narnia, which was well known to Lucy. From there, there were several islands closer to the shore. On one of them, they hoped to find Reepicheep.

One night just before they reached Cair Paravel, as everyone was sleeping, Erica heard the now familiar voice calling her. She immediately got up and went outside the cave where they had settled for the night. Sure enough, Aslan was there waiting for her.

'You are doing well, daughter of Eve,' said Aslan. 'So far you have faced little real danger. But I have come to warn you that Jadis and her wolves have been seen in this area. Tomorrow, you will face a challenge that you have not yet faced.'

'Will we have to fight?' asked Erica fearfully. 'We have no weapons and we are few. If Jadis comes with all her forces, we stand no chance.'

'You will not win this battle by brute force, but by cunning,' said Aslan. 'Remember the tools I have already given you: the fruit drink and the sandwich filling. And Xander has all the cunning of his race. Listen to him, for he will advise you well.'

'But Xander is afraid of the wolves,' said Erica.

'You must give him this message from me: Remember the Battle of Kinundrum,' said Aslan. 'That means nothing to you, but to his race it was a great victory, which they always remember. Xander underestimates himself and his capabilities. He is a warrior, just as his ancestors were.'

Not entirely reassured, Erica returned to the cave and settled down once more. Much to her surprise, she fell instantly into a deep and dreamless sleep and had to be shaken awake next morning by Lucy.

Thanks for your kind comments. Good to know that I'm catching the tone of the Narnai books, as well as CS!

~+~

Next morning the party set out again, still keeping under cover as far as they could, though the woods were thinning out as they approached Cair Paravel. Erica had said nothing to the others about her night-time conversation with Aslan, judging it wiser not to alarm Xander.

Suddenly, and without any warning, two wolves appeared on the path in front of them.

'Halt, who goes there?' said one. 'Who dares to trespass on Jadis' land?'

This has been free land for all Narnians since the time of High King Peter,' said Mr Tumnus. 'You have no right to stop us.'

'And what is this we have here?' taunted the other wolf. 'One of those cowardly foxes, methinks.'

Xander said nothing, trying to hide himself behind Lucy and Erica.

'Xander is not a coward!' said Erica fiercely. 'He's descended from a great race of warriors.'

'We shall see how brave he is!' said another voice behind them. Suddenly, the group looked round to see that they were surrounded by wolves, who had come out of hiding.

'We cannot win against so many, it's hopeless!' said Xander.

'We cannot win by brute force, but we can by cunning,' said Erica. 'Think of the battle of Kinundrum.'

'Who told you about that?' asked Xander.

However, there was no time for debate, as the wolves were closing in fast. Erica, remembering Aslan's words, took a bottle of Karen's fruit drink out of her backpack and threw the contents over the nearest wolves. They were instantly turned to stone. But the rest continued to advance.

'What else do you have in that bag?' asked |Xander.

'Only the sandwiches,' replied Erica. 'The spread revealed Reepicheep to us.'

'Quick, rub it on my arm!' said Xander. When Erica did this, the fox became invisible. Quickly, the party rubbed the ointment on each other's arms, so that they became invisible and were able to escape the wolves.

So, the whole party escaped safely and continued on their way, but cautiously, because they were sure that would not be their last encounter with the wolves or Jadis.

Xander was quite proud of himself for suggesting the ointment as a solution and for overcoming his fear of the wolves. The others praised him, which made him feel much better about himself.

Here is some more. Sorry for the gap. I was stuck for a few days, but the plot bunny came back!

~+~

Eventually, they came to Cair Paravel, where they looked for a boat that could take them to the islands. They soon found one by the name of Dawn Treader IV; yes it was indeed a replica of the original Dawn Treader in which Lucy and co had sailed many years before. The captain was Rufus Drinian, a descendant of the original captain. He was in fact a Lord, but under Jadis' rule he, like most of his peers, had dropped his title, especially since his lands had been confiscated. Nevertheless, he was an intrepid sailor and very happy to be able to serve Aslan.

'I suggest we start with Galma, Terebinthia and perhaps the Seven Isles,' he said to Lucy. 'If we don't find Reepicheep there, we will have to sail further afield to the Lone Islands.'

The first island they visited was Galma, where they were made very welcome by the local Duke. He laid on a tournament for them and the girls had great fun riding horseback and watching the jousting, although they were not allowed to take part. One of the young men took quite a shine to Erica, and insisted on carrying her handkerchief on his lance, but of course she was far too young to get seriously involved with him. She was thrilled, however, when he was declared champion of the jousting, having unseated all his opponents.

When questioned, the Duke denied all knowledge of Reepicheep's whereabouts. He said that it was extremely unlikely that he was imprisoned on his island. Much more likely, that he was somewhere on Terebinthia, where pirates were well known to live and prosper.

Accordingly, the group set sail once more the day after the tournament. It was only a short distance to Terebinthia, but the wind dropped, so that they were obliged to spend one night at sea. During the night, Erica, who was sharing a cabin with Lucy, was awoken by a terrific noise of shouting on deck.

On emerging from the cabin, she discovered that Terebinthian pirates were trying to board the ship and that Drinian and his men were trying to repel them. At that moment, Xander appeared from his own quarters, which he was sharing with Mr Tumnus and Mr Badger. He had found a sword in his cabin and he leapt into the middle of the melee, brandishing his sword to good effect. He swiftly struck down the leader of the invaders.

Now, pirates are very loyal to their leader, but left to themselves, they are cowards who do not know how to put up a fight. Seeing their leader struck down, they turned tail and did their best to scramble into the boat in which they had come. Drinian, Xander and the others struck them some telling blows during the retreat, not enough to injure them seriously, just enough to make them think twice about attacking the Dawn Treader again.

On examining the pirate leader after his friends had gone, Lucy discovered that he was not dead, but simply unconscious. A judicious application of more of the ointment from Joey's sandwiches soon revived him. The party were eager to question him. Perhaps he could give them some clues as to Reepicheep's whereabouts.

Darangle, the pirate captain proved to no match for the inquisitorial skills of Drinian. At first he denied any knowledge of the whereabouts of Reepicheep. However, he contradicted himself so much, that it was obvious that he knew where the mouse was being held.

In the end, having been convinced that there would otherwise be repercussions for his own pretty wife and young son, of whom he was very fond, he agreed to take the party to where Reepicheep was being held, although he insisted that he himself had not been involved in the mouse's capture, which had been carried out by his great rival, Parangle.

Early the next morning, Lucy, Erica, Mr Tumnus and Mr Badger, along with Drinian, accompanied Darangle ashore in search of Reepicheep.

Terebinthia is an inhospitable and rocky island, which provides little land suitable for farming or industrial use. This is the main reason that most of its inhabitants turned to piracy in order to make a living.

After a short time, they came to a series of caves, set in the rocky cliffs, where Darangle said that Reepicheep was being held.

'But in which cave?' asked Lucy. 'There are so many around here. And if we try to explore them, we will get lost for sure.'

Darangle did not know the answer to this, so they decided that the best plan was to conceal themselves in the vicinity of the caves and wait for Parangle or one of his men to visit Reepicheep, as they must need to check on him from time to time.

Sure enough, they only had to wait for a couple of hours before Parangle, who was so like Darangle that they could be brothers, and three of his men arrived by boat from another part of the island. Darangle's group stayed well hidden, waiting to see what would happen next.

Parangle led his men into one of the cave entrances. Erica, who had learned tracking in Guides, along with Mr Badger, who was used to moving silently through the forests of Narnia, crept silently up to the cave entrance. They could hear voices from inside.

'How long do you intend to keep me here?' asked a voice which was clearly Reepicheep's.

'As long as necessary,' laughed Parangle in a sinister voice. 'We are being well paid by Jadis and no one will find you here. This island is too wild for most people, except us pirates, of course. And I don't advise trying to escape, because my fellow pirates might not treat you so kindly and there is no way out of this bay except by boat.'

'Aslan will send someone to rescue me,' said Reepicheep with confidence. 'And then Jadis will be defeated and you will be on the losing side,'

'I don't think so,' replied Parangle. 'Aslan has not been seen in Narnia for many years and Jadis rules here. We pirates always back the winning side.'

'There are only 4 of them; we could easily overcome them and rescue Reepicheep,' said Erica, who was finding resources of courage within herself that she had had no idea existed.

Erica and Mr Badger crept back to the others and reported what they had seen and heard.

'Let's go for it,' said Xander, who had been emboldened by his recent successes. 'I agree with Erica, that we can easily overcome Parangle and his gang. Drinian, you must stay with the boat, so that we can cast off as soon as we have Reepicheep. We may not have much time to escape. The rest of you, come with me. But quietly, we do not want to raise the alarm.'

Together, they crept towards the cave entrance. Suddenly, Mr Tumnus, who was normally very sure-footed, tripped on a stone which went with a clatter.

'What was that?' said Parangle from within the cave. 'Go and look,' he ordered two of his gang.

Erica and Lucy were prepared and hit them hard with their backpacks, which were quite heavy. The two pirates fell to the ground, dazed.

'Come on!' said Lucy. 'If we don't move, Parangle or the other pirate will come out to see what has happened.'

They rushed into the cave, taking Parangle by surprise. Reepicheep was in a corner of the cave, quite unharmed, but bound by such thick ropes that he had not been able to gnaw through them.

Erica tossed the contents of the last bottle of Karen's fruit drink over Parangle and his fellow pirate, which turned them into stone long enough for Mr Tumnus, who was surprisingly strong, to pick up Reepicheep, ropes and all and run with him from the cave.

The others followed and soon they were in the boat, returning to the Dawn Treader. It was only as they were setting sail once more that they realised that Darangle was still with them.

'What are we to do with you?' asked Drinian. 'You may come with us, if you join our side, but if you cause trouble...' He left the sentence hanging menacingly.

'There is no life for me now on Terebinthia,' said Darangle. 'Parangle will never forgive what he will see as my betrayal. And he will make sure that the other pirate chiefs know of it. If you will let me, I will come with you. Maybe there is a place for me too in Aslan's army. Do you think that Aslan can rescue my wife and son?'

'Come and see,' said Drinian, his voice softening. For whilst the others had been engaged with Parangle, he had found a woman and a young boy wandering along the beach. No one knew quite how they got there, but as soon as they explained who they were, Drinian had welcomed them on board to wait for Darangle's return.

Here's a bit more. Hope to write the battle scene over the weekend, as it will take a bit more work.

~+~

The party sailed back to Cair Paravel, where they disembarked and said a grateful farewell to Drinian.

‘If I can ever be of further assistance, don’t hesitate to call on me,’ he said. He was going to miss them, because his life had become very boring since his lands were confiscated by Jadis. His wife had died giving birth to his only son a few years before and the boy had only lived for a few days.

‘You could come with us, if you want to,’ suggested Xander. And help us to defeat Jadis. That way you will get your lands back.’

‘The lands don’t matter to me so much, since I have no son to inherit them, but I would love to see Jadis defeated and play a part in her downfall. If you will let me come..’ said Drinian.

‘Of course we want you,’ chorused the others.

‘What do we do now that we have rescued Reepicheep?’ asked Erica. ‘Aslan didn’t give us any further instructions.’

‘I think we need to gather together as many talking animals and other friendly creatures as possible,’ said Reepicheep.

‘I could blow on the horn that Father Christmas gave me to summon them,’ said Lucy.

The others agreed that this was an excellent idea, but it was now getting late and they were tired after their long day, so they decided to sleep first and summon a meeting in the morning.

During the night, Erica once more heard the now familiar voice calling her. Immediately, she got up from her place by the fire and went to meet Aslan.

‘Well done, daughter of Eve,’ said Aslan. ‘You have rescued Reepicheep and found others to help you fight Jadis. Xander’s advice is correct. Tomorrow, you must gather as many of my followers as you can and make plans. But remember, that you will not defeat Jadis by brute force, but by cunning.’

‘Will I need more of the ointment or fruit drink?’ asked Erica. ‘I have run out.’

‘Yes, I will send you back to the school shortly to collect some. But remember, that they may not have the same properties or uses as the first lot you brought.’

Sure enough, Erica found herself once more in the kitchen of the Chalet School in the middle of the night. She could not see any more of Karen’s fruit drink, but there were bottles of lemonade instead. She gathered those up, hoping that they would be of use, along with the last of Joey’s sandwiches.

Once back in Narnia, she slept dreamlessly until Reepicheep called them early the next morning.

Here is the next bit, with apologies to Lewis Carroll!

~+~

The party knew they had no alternative but to confront Jadis, although most of them would not have chosen to do so. The next morning Lucy blew on the horn and creatures loyal to Aslan gathered from all over Narnia.

Gathered together, they were an impressive crowd of about 500, which gave the intrepid leaders hope.

'And there are others further afield, who could not get here yet,' asserted Reepicheep. 'They will join us in the battle.'

'But Jadis has many more supporters. How on earth can we defeat her?' asked Drinian.

'With Aslan's help and cunning,' said Xander, who was rapidly becoming the warrior leader he was always intended to be. 'What we need to do is to fool her into thinking that we are even fewer than she thinks we are.'

'How do we do that?' asked Erica, not unreasonably.

'A few of us will go to the hill where her castle is. We need to draw her and her wolves out on to the plain. The rest must hide amongst the hills round about and when she and her wolves appear on the plain, we can descend on them.'

'But how can we lure her onto the plain? She has no reason to leave her castle.'

''We must make her believe that Aslan is here. Who is the biggest of our lions?'

'Me!' roared Simba. 'But no one would mistake me for Aslan. And I would feel that I was betraying him, if I tried to impersonate him. Most importantly, I am not big enough.'

'Erica, give Simba a drink of the lemonade you brought,' said Xander.

Erica obeyed without question, having seen that it was futile to ask how Xander knew things that no one else did.

Immediately, Simba grew in size and stature, so that he could indeed be mistaken for Aslan from a distance.

'Right,' said Xander. 'Lucy, Erica, Mr Tumnus and Reepicheep, you stay with us. Darangle and Drinian, I need you to organise the troops, so that they are ready to attack when the signal is given.'

'We can do that,' chorused Darangle and Drinian, who were both experienced leaders of men. They quickly split the army into 5 sections, with a centaur and a lion in charge of each. Then they hid themselves to await Jadis' arrival. They left just a few animals with Aslan; enough to convince Jadis that he was real but not too many to pose a threat to her.

The smaller party, with the exception of Simba and the animals who surrounded him, marched on Jadis' castle. 'Who goes there?' challenged a sentry.

'We come from Aslan to summon Jadis to a meeting,' said Xander.

'I don't believe you,' said the sentry. 'Aslan has not been seen in the land for many years.'

'Then, who is that, down there?' asked Reepicheep.

'It certainly looks like Aslan,' said the sentry nervously, for he had heard many legends about the great lion and in truth was not sure whether he was more afraid of him or Jadis.

The sentry allowed the party to pass into the castle, where they met Malgrim, the chief of Jadis' wolves. He too was reluctant to let them pass, until he saw 'Aslan' in the distance.

'What is this talk of Aslan?' roared Jadis. 'He is dead.'

'Come and see for yourself,' said Xander.

'And what guarantee do I have of safe conduct?' asked Jadis. 'This could be a trap.'

'I will stay here,' said Lucy. This had been agreed reluctantly by the others. Of course, they trusted that they would be able to rescue Lucy, once Jadis had been defeated, but as Lucy herself said, she had had a long and good life in our world and she would not mind if she had to stay in Narnia for ever.

So it was agreed. Jadis and her wolves came out onto the plain to meet 'Aslan'. As they began to talk, the horn sounded once more and the creatures, led by Drinian and Darangle, swarmed down into the valley.

'It's a trick!' shouted Malgrim. 'Guard Jadis at all cost.'

But in this he was already too late, as Jadis was surrounded by a huge crowd of animals, all of whom were fighting with tooth and claw and any other weapons at their disposal.

It was a fierce battle, because both sides had much to lose and many more of Jadis' followers had joined them.

The power of the lemonade gradually wore off and Simba returned to his normal size.

'Seize the imposter,' cried Jadis.

At that moment, there was a tremendous roar, such as is rarely heard on Earth.

'Aslan!' cried Erica. 'You came!'

Here is the final part. Thanks for reading this. Hope you've enjoyed reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it.

~+~

It was indeed Aslan, standing there on the hill where Jadis' castle stood. No one who looked on could doubt his majestic presence. Those of Lucy and Erica's party made deep obeisance to him, whilst those of Jadis' party fell back in dismay, all their hopes dashed.

'Come on,' said Jadis. ' You cowards, to give up without a fight. We can still win this. How do you know that isn't another imposter?'

But in her heart, she too knew that it was Aslan and that her days were numbered. For, as those who have read the Chronicles of Narnia know, she had already been defeated by Aslan at the Stone Table. Though she might try to rule in his absence, there was no doubt in anyone's mind who was the rightful ruler of the land.

So the battle ended and Jadis and her followers dispersed. Aslan gave an amnesty to anyone who was willing to lay down their arms and serve him. As for Jadis, she disappeared once more and her body has never been found, so who knows if she might return to Narnia one day.

Lucy was released from the castle and returned happily to her great-grandchildren, regaling them with new tales, not only of Narnia, but of the wondrous Chalet School, so that all the girls wanted to become pupils and all the boys were jealous.

This tale is now ended, but I cannot close without one final scene. It is the end of term at the Chalet School and the annual Nativity Play is taking place. As always, it ends with a tableau of the Holy Family and the rest of the cast.

Suddenly, all goes dark again in St Luke's Hall, except for a single light. Down the central aisle come a wolf and a calf, a leopard and a goat, a lamb, a foal (mother sheep, mother cow and mother horse are watching anxiously from the wings) and a very large lion. Leading them all is Felicity Maynard. As they join the group of worshippers around the crib, Erica says in a clear voice:

'The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.' (Isaiah 11:6)

It felt very satisfying as a sentence.
I also loved the line about the girls wanting to go to the CS and the boys being jealous!
